Book Description
In a book that is sure to become a classic, internationally respected boatbuilder, yacht manager, and delivery skipper Bill Seifert shares his hard-won solutions to a host of boat design, construction, and equipment issues and seamanship dilemmas. Unlike other books on the subject, Offshore Sailing doesn’t just tell readers what to do for safe and comfortable passage making; it shows them how to do it with clear, step-by-step instructions and nearly 200 detailed drawings and photographs.

Offshore Sailing: 200 Essential tips.......2007-07-05
I recommend this book to all novices and many experienced offshore sailors to prepare for the unexpected problems that you need to address or avoid especially when you are so exposed to the extremes of nature, and completely disconnected from any immediate help. Lots of good lessons learned and references.

Required reading for ASA108 certification.......2007-05-12
This book looks disappointing at first because it is a thin expensive hardcover, but it is worth the money. There is very little fluff and the content is well structured and to the point. It covers most things necessary to prepare your boat for offshore sailing including tool lists, weight distribution, polars and VMG, secants and many other useful tips. Lots of pictures, tables and diagrams.
Offshoore Sailing: 2000 passagemaking tips.......2007-01-31
This is a very comprehensive book explaining what you need to know about offshore sailing.
Take the hint(s)........2003-07-31
It would be foolish to think about seriously sailing or cruising without taking Bill Seifert's learned counsel!!
Get this one.......2002-11-09
I rarely bother to write reviews, but I have to add my kudos to the others given here. There is a down-to-earth pragmatism in these pages that I haven't found anywhere else. The authors have condensed an extraordinary amount of experience into 200 very succinct tips that cover a broad range of subjects. Many of their suggestions are low tech and can be easily implemented yourself. They have been there, done that and it shows. I am putting this one right next to Dashew, Calder, Sutphen and Leonard to fill in the blanks.

A must!.......2007-09-24
No one that is in charge of Human Factors in their companies should miss this book.
Book Description
The Second World War was a classic period in the development and perfection of propeller-driven aircraft. Built during the crisis of wartime, these aircraft and the cockpits within them were marvels of technology, ingenuity and design.
Cockpit is the first book that puts the reader into the pilot's seat of these superb classic aircraft.
Cockpit is rich in historical photographs of the insides of dozens of the most celebrated, and feared, aircraft-American, British, Japanese, Russian and German. These vintage photographs and a candid "pilot's perspective" on each interior offer a unique behind-the-scenes view not only of the extraordinary aircraft, but also of the heroic men who flew them. Cockpits depicted include:
- Lockheed P-38 Lightning
- Hawker Hurricane
- Grumman Wildcat
- Mitsubishi Zero-Sen
- Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress
- Yakovlev Yak-3
- Gloster Gladiator
- Messerschmitt ME 262
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Photography.......2007-01-07
Great reference for aircraft interior from a pilots viewpoint. Excellent photography of a confined dark space.
Little Hallmark Dots.......2006-06-16
Other folks have weighed in on the content of the book, so I have no need to do that. My comment will center on the aspect of the photography that spoiled the book for me. The crew obviously had applied little colored circular stickers to the various instruments so they could be coded for the captions. That was all fine and well, but 75% of the photographs were taken with the stickers still in place. It was sloppy work. Carping, perhaps, but I expected better. The same comments apply to the volume dealing with Cold War aircraft.
Mixed Feelings.......2005-04-01
It's difficult to rate this because it depends upon what you expected this book to be. I had hoped that it would essentially be a reference for each aircraft showing all aspects of the cockpit with descriptions of the instruments and controls. This it is NOT. The photography is very nice but is strictly evocative and not really illustrative. It shows the instrument panels but in a way that hides essential details that I desire to see. Oh well, perhaps next time :-)
Good, unique book, but could've been better.......2003-01-08
I'm ... only giving it 4 stars. Nijboer and Patterson came up with a great idea, but missed a little in the execution. As a modeler, I'd like to see more details of the entire cockpit, not just the instrument panels. Also, I realize Mr Patterson is an accomplished professional photographer, but I was a little disappointed with the nature of many of the shots. I think he was trying for dramatic lighting effects, but ended up with many parts of the cockpit in dark shadow or nearly washed out by flash. ...
New standard for close up fotography !.......2002-04-09
I bought Gunner, an illustrated history of world war 2 aircraft turrets and gunpositions (by the same authors) first so I knew what to expect when I bought this book. Cockpit is probably the first book with amazing picture quality and in my eyes the standard for years to come. The pictures of the Hawker Typhoon and the Douglas A-20 Havoc are special to me because they are my favourite World War 2 airplanes. I've seen a few of these airplanes in real life but I didn't have the chance to see the cockpit up close. Because of the pictures of Dan Patterson it is now possible to walk in the footsteps of World War 2 pilots and try to imagine what it was like to fly these airplanes. I hope that the authors of these two magnificent books (Cockpit and Gunner) can find the inspiration to bring out more books like this, because these books are two of the finest in my collection.

Book Description
Readers join desperate pilots in the cockpit as they fight gravity and time in a plane that's falling out of the sky.
Anyone who watches the news knows about the "black box." Officially called the cockpit voice recorder, the black box (which is actually Day-glo orange) records the final moments of any in-flight accident. Often it provides the only explanation of a crash -- inevitably, it provides a heart-breaking, second-by-second account of intense fear tempered by unyielding professionalism.
This 1984 Quill title has been completely updated to include twenty-eight new incidents occurring between 1978 and 1996. Some are famous, like the 1996 Valujet crash in the Everglades and the ill-fated launch of the space shuttle Challenger; other disasters range from commuter prop aircraft to jumbo airliners and a pair of Air Force planes. Few have ever been revealed in their entirety, each, without exception, is absolutely gripping.
In this new edition, editor Malcolm MacPherson has, wherever possible, added weather notes and descriptions of events in the cockpit and cabin, heightening our vivid sense of being there during the final moments. Provided by the National Transportation Safety Board and vetted by an experienced airline captain, these are unforgettable case studies in ultimate emergency -- authentic, immediate, filled with drama, terror, human frailty and error, and unquenchable courage.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing new.......2006-08-14
If you spent any time reviewing CVRs, then there is nothing new in this book. Although there are several inaccuracies/mistakes, the worst part of the book is that it gives almost zero insight into what happened in each case. A short one page write-up at the end of each CVR would really help this book.
PLAGIARISM.......2006-04-12
This collection of CVR transcripts from air crashes and near misses is a huge waste of money. MacPherson just reproduces excerpts from the transcripts that can be found on the internet at the NTSB website and many other sites. In their complete form and for free. His short paragraphs of explanations of the incidents involved add nothing to the book because it is obvious that the author knows nothing of aviation. If you are a true student of air crashes, look up the complete accident reports on the NTSB website or avsaf.org or a number of other sites. These are free and much more informative. Black Box is a cheap excuse for jounalism. I'd actually give it less than 1 star if I could.[...]
Compelling Reading.......2005-10-25
I suspect the reviewers who were looking for excruciating details are more of the anorak/spotter/enthusiast persuasion than certificated fliers. Personally I found many of the transcripts contained lessons that will certainly follow me into the cockpit. The CVR transcripts also show a level of professionalism and skill that I think the flying public is by and large oblivious of.
It helps to know about the crash before you read this book.......2005-09-01
Unfortunately, there is nothing new in this book. For the most part everything in the book, except for the few comments provided by the author, is available on line and most sites include much more detail. The CVR in and of itself does not tell the whole story and a little more background on each of these disiasters would have helped to make this a much better book. If you are not familiar with the accidents in question this book will do more to confuse and create questions than to provide you with insight and information.
The "Wrong Stuff".......2005-08-09
Having read many different variations of these books, it is my humble opinion that this particular edition tends to treat the reader as a layman, rather than as a pilot, or at least someone versed in the aviation lingo. The author also includes unhealthy doses of vulgarity in the transcripts, which does occur in cockpits from time to time, but I wouldn't want the pilot's next of kin to know their loved-one's 'salty' mode of speech is being read by total strangers. There are better, more informational offerings of this type. "Aftermath", published by the editors of Flying Magazine, is a good example. "Air Disasters" by Stanley Stewart is a very thorough, technically precise treatise on several major aircraft accidents. Mr. Stewart is an actual aircraft accident investigator, and his personal knowledge of the field greatly enhances the accuracy of his published mishap investigations and findings. "Black Box" is entertaining, and the inclusion of the Space Shuttle Challenger voice transcripts is a welcome addition to the considerable list of entries. Nevertheless, the salient theme of this volume is to relate aviation data to the non-flying public.

Book Description
An autobiography of a naval aviator who flew over 100 combat missions in the Korean War. Tex Atkinson flew F4U Corsairs and AD Skyraiders. He served on the USS Princeton and USS Boxer.
An important contribution to the history of naval aviation with detailed and often chilling accounts of combat flying during the Korean War and of straight-deck carrier operations during that time. Includes excellent descriptions of the flying characteristics (and hazards) of the Corsair and Skyraider.
Also a very human story with accounts of the author's growing up years in Hillsboro, Texas and his attendance at Southwestern University. There is an interesting account of a Willie Nelson concert to benefit the restoration of the Hill County courthouse which burned to the ground and was completely rebuilt to look like the original.
Book includes two photo sections (32 pages total) of excellent personal and naval aviation photography.
This is a much expanded and much higher quality edition than the paperback edition published by Publish America. DO NOT CONFUSE THE TWO. There is little comparison.

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A949853. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) program conducted by the U.S. Army's John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (SWCS). It seeks to determine the most accurate and relevant method of testing potential Special Forces soldiers and officers. Thesis study focuses on the validity of the current personal attributes required in a Special Forces soldier and the current testing methods employed to measure the required attributes set forth by SWCS. It also explores the issue of an additional selection program for the potential Special Forces officer. This study demonstrates that the current attributes required in the potential Special Forces soldier and officer are valid. However it recommends two additional attributes that will enhance the profile of the Special Forces soldier. It also demonstrates that the current testing methods of SFAS do not sufficiently test all the required attributes. This thesis recommends nine additional testing methods that adequately test all the required attributes for a Special Forces soldier and officer. This thesis focus on the assessment and selection program of SFAS; it does not discuss standards that must be achieved by the potential Special Forces soldier and officer.
Book Description
This is perhaps the finest collection of cockpit photographs in existence. The Museum (NASM) holds the world's premier collection of historic aircraft, but visitors to the museum must maintain a respectful distance. In
At the Controls, NASM photographers Eric Long and Mark Avino use creative lighting techniques and an extremely wide-angle lens mounted on a short-bodied, large-format architectural camera to duplicate the sensation of actually being at the controls inside the cockpit of 45 legendary aircraft. The reader experiences a pilot's-eye view of the cockpit.
Among the 45 featured aircraft are these history-making planes:
- Wright Brothers 1903 Flyer
- Blériot Type XI
- Fokker D.VII
- Ryan NYP Spirit of St. Louis
- Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VII
- Focke-Wulf Fw 190F-8
- Ilyushin IL-2 Shturmovik
- Messerschmitt Me 262
- Boeing B-29 Enola Gay
- Sikorsky UH-34D Seahorse
- Project Apollo Lunar Module
- Space Shuttle Columbia
Customer Reviews:
Great photography, broad sweep of history, but uninspiring prose........2005-08-06
This is a very nice, broad look at lots of cockpit interiors and aircraft exteriors. It's not as good as Nijboer and Patterson's Cockpits of the Cold War, but I found the pictures very clear and devoid of the overly-dramatic (and obscuring) artsy-fartsy photography typical of aviation history books.
This is a Smithsonian book, covering aircraft in the Smithsonian collection, so the authors and photographers had unfettered access to each of the aircraft involved. This is evident in the consistent image quality. The images are still not as inspiring as Patterson's work, though, and he had to go traipse across the world to get his aircraft. The thin volume covers the Wright Flyer to the Space Shuttle, which is a little overreaching in my opinion. I tend to like more narrow focus.
The prose is a historian's perspective, not the gritty pilot first-person accounts captured in Cockpits of the Cold War. It's not bad prose, but it's clear that the cover of the book correctly lists the writers as "editor" rather than "author." Still, this is a must-have tome for any serious aircraft afficianado.
Get in the Cockpit and Fly.......2001-11-15
If you love aircraft, this is a book for you ! The photography of the cockpits is stunning. The information about the control and instruments of flying from the day Wright Brothers, to the Spirit of St. Louis, the Warbirds of WW II, to today's Spacecraft
is extraodinary ! I bought the book just to have a photo of the greenhouse of th B-29 Superfortress, my plane in WW II. I was not disapointed. A plus was a view of the A Squares of my 497th bomb Group, 73rd Wing of the 20th Air force in formation.
