Book Description
Lots of people enjoy making or buying treats for their pets, but wouldn't it be wonderful to cook a real meal for the four-legged member of the household? Quirky yet practical, these cookbooks provide recipes that are nutritionally balanced and veterinarian-approved. They even include sections on "tandem" recipes - recipes for humans that, with slight modifications, can also be served to pets.
REAL FOOD FOR DOGS is written by Arden Moore, the first non-veterinarian to write the pet column for Prevention magazine.
Customer Reviews:
Great recipes.......2007-10-01
Good alternative meals for dogs, with ingredients that you already probably have in the fridge. Also has great treat ideas that I didn't have in another treat cookbook.
Fun book.......2007-09-26
This book has great dog treat ideas and a fun format. The recipes are unusual and very simple. I was disappointed that there weren't more recipes for everyday dog food, though. This book is more for special-occasion food.
Good beginner's book. Not for the long haul.......2007-09-18
I picked this up on a whim just after I adopted my dog. I've been feeding my cats a homemade diet using Feline Future for years now. This is a very cute book. A very fun book. But it is NOT a very healthy book. It advocates a lot of highly processed ingredients. Refined white rice and refined white bread. Corn meal. These are not good for your dog.
It says nothing about whole, fresh, organic ingredients. Vitamins. Nutrients.
If you're looking to get started, this book is a good one for beginners. Although some of the recipes are far too ingredient heavy.
NOT WHAT MY VET RECOMMENDS.......2007-07-13
I bought this book because I was scared to death to buy any more dog food from the stores after the poisoned stuff showed up from CHINA...which is a bad place to get ANY food from.
I showed it to my vet. He confirmed what I already felt after reading it...it is NOT a good book to feed your dog from on a regular basis. It is ok for an occasional cooked meal; but not for regular consumption. The recipes do not contain wholesome ingredients, and do contain salt and other things not good, and are too fattening. The treat section is good. I made some treats from the book and my dogs loved them. I made one of the meal recipes and only one of my dogs spit it on the floor...but she spits EVERYTHING on the floor if it isn't to her liking, and being a Shih-Tzu, NOTHING is to her liking, lol.
Anyway, it is an OK book for an occasional cooked meal treat or for making your own treats, but not healthy to give your dog on a regular basis....according to a Vet with degrees lining his walls.
A GREAT starter book for a beginning canine cook..........2007-07-09
I bought about four dog food cookbooks at once, after the big dog food scandal, and this was the simplest and the most clearly understood. It made cooking for the dog fun, which is important, since you will be doing this a LOT! I've learned about all the various things they can and cannot eat from the internet, and I've labored through the charts and graphs in other books, but when the food bowl is empty and I'm getting the *big stare*, this book is where I run to for inspiration. Check in the freezer section of your meat department for ground turkey. Also, throwing a pound or two of hamburger in the slow cooker with a bag of frozen vegetables and some brown rice is a definite time saver, plus much safer than some nasty ground who-know's-what from an unregulated factory. I've been getting complaints that the dog food smells better than the people food. Cooking for your pets will be one of those life-time long learning experiences, but this is a great place to start.
P.S. My dog is healthier now, and knows I love him, as well...

Customer Reviews:
Are we all rating the same book?.......2007-05-12
I bought a copy of this book and haven't seen any recipes that call for onions. Granted, I've only made about half the recipes so far, but I've seen nothing that will harm our cats. Two of the recipes I've made did call for garlic but the amount was so small that it wouldn't have any adverse effect.
I've made the Tuna Cakes and the recipe did not call for onions. The fish chowder recipe makes 5 servings - no mention of onion, and only one clove of garlic was needed.
I'm also pleased about the various safety tips throughout the book. I recommend this book to all.

I didn't see onions.......2007-05-12
I got a copy of this book, looked at the Tuna Cakes recipe and it did not list onions. Also in the back of the book with the human recipes it informs to leave onions out of the cat's meal. Not sure why there is a difference but just wanted to inform that I didn't find onions in the recipes. ????
Vet approved???.......2007-04-23
Onions can cause Heinz's Anemia in cats. I would not take my cat to any vet that approved feeding onions to a cat. This book has dangerous recipes. Spend your money on better book.
Buyer beware and ABBEY is wrong.......2007-04-17
UPDATE 5/14/07: Because there is a mystifying dispute between those readers who see onions (harmful to cats) in these recipes and those who don't, here's an easy way to see for yourself and make an informed decision. Use the excellent Amazon feature "Search Inside This Book." Either key in the word "onion" and click "Go" to see how many pages list onions in the recipes (I find 22) or choose the "Surprise me" option and click it repeatedly -- it took only 4-5 clicks for me to find "Kitty Tacos" with 1/2 cup onion listed as the second ingredient.
Original April 2007 review:
WARNING: Onions are toxic to cats, and these recipes are full of onions.
While a few recipes in this book may be safe, it's hard to trust that because many recipes specifically for cats contain onion -- and ABBEY, whose review 32 people found helpful, is dead wrong that this is only the "people recipes at the end of the book." (Sorry, ABBEY, but I did read and comprehend the information.)
Don't be swayed by my saying so -- please judge for yourself. With the pet food recall, we all need to watch out for each other and, more importantly, for our precious cats. Below, I have copied page 23 verbatim, and it is NOT one of the "people recipes" at the end of the book:
"Tuna Cakes
Cats will race even faster to the sound of a whirring can opener if they think you're about to prepare this tasty and nutritious dish.
2 eggs
1 6-ounce can tuna, drained, and flaked
1 small ONION, finely chopped
4 slices bread, cubed into kitty size bits
1/2 teaspoon iodized salt
1 teaspoon brewer's yeast
1 teaspoon bonemeal
2 tablespoons margarine
1. Beat the eggs lightly in a bowl. Add the tuna, ONION, bread cubes, salt, brewer's yeast, and bonemeal. Mix thoroughly until moistened.
2. Form into small patties. Melt the margarine in a skillet and fry the patties until golden brown. When cool, crumble each patty and serve.
Makes 3 to 5 servings."
On page 25, the Fish Chowder specifically for cats calls for 1 glove garlic, minced and 2 tablespoons finely chopped ONION. On page 27, the Boogaloo Shrimp, again, in a recipe supposedly specifically for cats, the first ingredient is 1/2 chopped ONION. Page 32, the recipe for Chicken with Greens, there is a warning about introducing cats gradually to greens because they can be sensitive to it, but no warning about the 1 clove garlic in the recipe or on page 33, the Chicken Salad that calls for 1 tablespoon finely chopped ONION. The "people" recipes ABBEY refers to, called "Tandem Cooking" by the author, do not begin until page 81.
I am extremely disappointed I bought this potentially dangerous book and applaud the reviewer Cordelia Wright who is researching the vet who wrote the preface.
This is not a time to stand on ceremony when pet health is at stake from commercial food -- we need reliable sources of information about safe food, and this book is not it for the reasons previous reviewers have stated. Buyer, please beware.
I have complained to Amazon about continuing to promote and sell this book in the face of the pet food scare (a sick irony that people avoiding tainted commercial food turn to a so-called "vet-approved" recipe book containing recipes that will harm their cats!), and I have written a complaint to the book's publisher. I'm also pursuing getting a journalist involved to warn the public and find out how this book's author can claim these recipes are "vet-approved" when no vet would say giving onions to cats is safe.
Dangerous Recipes.......2007-04-10
I am so disappointed. Continuing to sell/publish this book is irresponsible. As two recent reviews have noted, the recipes are full of ONIONS and, occasionally, GARLIC, both toxic to cats (onions can cause Heinz's Anemia). One other review wrote that the onions were confined to the "people food" section of the book, but this is not true. There are onions everywhere. I agree that this book cannot possibly be vet approved, and I intend to do some research into the guy, a vet, who wrote the preface. His Latin is fake, and so, to my great disappointment, is the potential security and well being proffered by these recipes. I am going to return the book. Even if one leaves the garlic out, can one really trust that the author's nutrional advice is sound ? With great disappointment, I recommend that you stay far away from this book, even though the illustrations are charming.

Does your spouse's need to alphabetically organize books on the shelves puzzle you? Do your boss's tsunami-like moods leave you exasperated? Do your child's constant questions make you batty? If you've ever wanted to change your mate, your coworkers, or a family member, then "Put down your chisel," advise David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates in this book of personality types. We are different for a reason, and that reason is probably more good than bad. Keirsey and Bates believe that not only is it impossible to truly change others (which they call embarking on a "Pygmalion project"), it's much more important to understand and affirm differences. Sounds easier than it is, you might say. Well, this book is a guide for putting an end to the Pygmalion projects in your life and starting on the path to acceptance.
For anyone acquainted with the ubiquitous Myers-Briggs personality test, Please Understand Me will be familiar territory--but gone over with a fine-toothed comb. And for the uninitiated, this book will be a quick introduction to personality typing the Myers-Briggs way--with a Jungian accent. After presenting a brief rundown of 20th-century psychology movements, Keirsey and Bates encourage you to take the 70-question "Keirsey Temperament Sorter," a sort of mini-Myers-Briggs test that places you in 1 of 16 personality types. Like the Myers-Briggs system, this test sorts your personality into groups of extraversion/introversion (E/I), sensation/intuition (S/N), thinking/feeling (T/F), and perceiving/judging (P/J). Unlike the Myers-Briggs system, Please Understand Me also presents four easy-to-remember temperament types--Dionysian (freedom first), Epimethean (wants to be useful), Promethean (desires power), and Apollonian (searches for self)--that underlie the 16 possible personalities identified by the test. The book then delves into a detailed analysis of each type, with sections on mates, children, and leaders. An appendix paints portraits of the 16 possible personality types.
Unless you're already a true personality-typing devotee, this book may seem a little esoteric, especially the somewhat "in" references to psychological theory that few laypeople will be likely to understand. But give it a chance and you may find that you'll begin to understand why you always know where to find Anna Karenina on the shelf (you have an ESTJ husband), why your boss is sarcastic one day and praises your achievements the next (she's an NF), and why knowing the reason that the sun comes up in the same place every day is important to your little one (he's Promethean). You may even find that once you accept quirks and ticks in others, they will understand you a little better, too. --Stefanie Durbin

The definitive "twist" on a classic model.......2007-08-10
George E. Box once said: "All models are wrong. Some models are useful."
Keirsey takes the traditional Meyers-Briggs model and by merely viewing it from a different perspective increases its utility.
He retains the same measurement charateristics of the original model: Introvert/Extrovert, Sensor/Intuitor, Thinker/Feeler, and Judger/Prober, and posits key discriminators that, based upon behavioral observations, result in a classification scheme that is delightfully simple and useful.
His derived model identifies four tempremental archetypes which he calls: Guardians, Artisans, Idealists, and Rationalists. He explains the differences and similarities between the types based upon two criteria: mode of communication (concrete vs. abstract), and mode of achievement (cooperative vs. utilitarian).
The model does not attempt to "pigeonhole" people, it instead offers a plausible explanation for why folks sometimes become "stuck" in their interactions based upon their preferences. This is liberating in the sense that it provides a basis of understanding for what is important to you and to the other person, from this proceeds an opportunity for mutual respect (to look at again) and acknowledgment of the dignity of our fellow human beings.
Utterly intriguing -- the model may be "wrong" but it sure is useful.
dead on.......2007-07-31
You can read the other reviews for the details of this book's theory. One thing that may be helpful for you to know, is that this book is an improvement on the original theory, because of some new insights on how to group the different types.
You can argue whether it breaks the world down right, or whether it provides useful results. I and my whole family took the test, and the results were dead-on, we concluded. We learned a lot about ourselves. The book also has a section on how different types relate to each other, which we chuckled over, because of how true it was.
You've got to be honest with yourself to get correct results. If you are trying to be something you're not when you answer the questions, you'll get inaccurate results.
better than the first.......2007-07-30
I bought this along with the first edition, and overall found that this one was even more informative and interesting, a must read for any psych major

Book Description
Bestselling author Joyce Meyer confronts the need for approval that is so evident in today's world. So many people these days have an unhealthy need for constant affirmation and are unable to feel good about themselves without it. Thiscan lead to major problems in relationships and may even turn into an addiction. In her latest book, Joyce Meyer provides a release from the need for acceptance from the outside world-an acceptance that is unfulfilling and leads only to disappointment. She provides a supportive voice that understands the effect of insecurity in one's life. Her abiding message is that God provides all the security one needs, and through Him one can attain freedom from the approval addiction.

An Important Truth.......2007-05-08
You can't please all the people all the time, and this Christianity-based book will help you realize that truth.
Joyce Meyer-keepin' it real...........2007-04-27
Joyce Meyer did a great job on writing this bestseller. Approval Addiction is another one of Joyce's masterpieces. I saw a lot of me in this book, and she stepped on all of my toes....(even though I didn't want to hear it). The good thing is that she uses references (via scriptures from the Holy Bible) to explain how approval addiction can be harmful not only to you, but to other relationships. NOW, I understand that I need to change my behavior. Thank you, Lord, for having people like Joyce Meyer for keeping it real.
Approval Addiction.......2007-01-16
....For anyone who thinks "people-pleasing" will do anything for your social-life or personal self-esteem except leave you feeling frustrated and feeling unappreciated...this book is for you.... Great practical Christian teaching on following your own destiny, being the authentic you and trusting God to bring the people to you that are suportive and the rest, well....like Joyce Meyer implies, and the old words of wisdom state "You can't please all the people, all the time."
WOW!!.......2007-01-09
This book is so awesome!!
It can be such a help to anyone...it was for me!! I learned so much and could apply so much of the book to my own life!
Eye Opening.......2007-01-03
I am reading this now and am loving it and seeing some of myself mirrored in this book. I had gifted it to my mom in Spanish and she loves it and she is learning alot about herself and has already begun to put into practice what she is learning. She said to me, "I don't want to just read this, I want to learn and live it." Powerful to experience and I am sure it will do the same for me and you should you decide to read and challenge yourself in this New Year.

Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me.......2007-09-24
A beautiful book that my twin 3-year-old granddaughters want me to read over and over. Be sure to order the large hardback copy to enjoy the fold-out pages and beautiful illustrations.
DISAPPOINTED IN THE SIZE.......2007-09-11
THE STORY WAS EXCELLENT,MY CHILDREN LOVED IT, I WAS DISAPPOINTED IN THE SIZE OF THE BOOK.
Disappointed.......2007-08-23
I thought I was getting a full-sized book, but instead I received this teeny-tiny mini book that is so small I don't see what the purpose of having it is. I don't remember seeing anywhere that the book would be 2 " X 3" - so just a warning to anyone who thinks they are ordering a normal book.
misadvertised.......2007-05-07
The book was listed as a hard covered book. It did not say that it was a mini book. The child was very disappointed. Amazon did give me a $10 credit but I have to look for the proper sized book elsewhere.
Invest in LARGER hardcover.......2007-04-07
I bought the Hardcover version of this book that was $6.99. I was pretty disappointed when I received it and found that it was the size of my HAND. The print is also tiny, which makes it hard to read. I would tell anyone looking at this book to buy the more expensive and larger copy of this book.
Other than it being very small, this is a great book. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is really cute. I also think the fold out pages are great. Eric Carle is wonderful!

Customer Reviews:
The smart take on initiative .......2007-09-17
Corporate employees must contend with downsizing, scarce jobs and scarcer benefits. In today's virtual corporations, a handful of employees do the work that many people used to do. To survive, make yourself an irreplaceable employee. That's the short, sweet, familiar point (and the only message, given the book's brevity) that Bob Nelson conveys in this simple but clear manual for long-term employment survival. Take the initiative, assume responsibility, know your job better than anybody else and fulfill your supervisor's expectations - even the unspoken ones. Become indispensable: it's here in a nutshell. We find that Nelson provides valuable tips on being a proactive employee and, for fun, illustrates them with some bright little stories.
Initiative + Timing = Promotion.......2003-07-18
This is a very easy to read book full of examples of how people were able to make headway on the corporate ladder by showing initiative, waiting until the timing was right, and even disobeying superiors.
Through a string of specific examples from which generalized ideas are formed, this book explains how you can be an empowered employee with a driving force that will not only bring you job satisfaction, but can help you turn even a doldrum job into an opportunity for success.
The ideas, such as "be a person that makes things happen" can apply to any job, you just have to think about how it can apply to you.
Pro-active thinking!.......2003-02-03
Bob Nelson has assembled a quick reading book on popular business concepts and situations facing a regular employee. He offers suggestions on becoming more pro-active than re-active to situations that arise through out many different careers. Nelson also gives examples of true story scenarios in which a person took a chance or challenged an idea and was later promoted for it. He talks about successes and also failures in careers in which people either sat on the sidelines or got in the game. This book most can probably read in a day as it is under 100 pages and reads very fast. It has quick chapters and a lot of useful insight.
Not so thrilled.......2002-05-17
I was a bit disappointed after reading the book because I thought the author was giving 'general advice' rather than 'specific tips'. I would rather recommend 'The Administrative Assistant' (Crisp Publications)
Encouraging a good employee to be a great employee.......2002-01-23
Bob Nelson doesn't pull any punches, and he says what every employer has always wanted to say, but couldn't quite find the right words. I am purchasing a copy of this book for each of my departments. It will be required reading for all employees. It drives me crazy when an employee is asked to do something and the first thing out of his/her mouth is, "but I don't know how." Fine, you don't know how, but you are an intelligent human being whom I hired, and you can learn. I love the person who doesn't have a clue, but takes on the task, thinks things through, asks questions, and gets the job done. Stagnation is boring, and it's not long before it starts to stink. This books gives employees great ideas to keep from being anything but stagnate. If they work for me, they know actions speak louder than words, and the right actions will take them places. Employers, be sure to read the book. As a companion, read "First, Break All the Rules" by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton, Ph.D. With these books, you will have the tools to make your organization soar.

Book Description
A New York Times bestseller
NOW IN PAPERBACK
Bestselling author and frequent "Oprah" guest Dr. Harriet Braiker offers help for anyone who has ever felt the resentment of giving 100 percent to others and getting nothing in return.
Featured on NBC's "Today," The Disease to Please explodes the dangerous myth that "people pleasing" is a benign problem. It is the first book to treat people pleasing as a serious psychological syndrome, and it breaks new ground in its approach to offer a cure. Dr. Braiker offers a 21-Day Action Plan for curing the Disease to Please. A daily psychological workout and skills-training program, it will help readers replace the compulsion to comply with a more conscious and reasoned choice to care. The Disease to Please includes:
- Extensive case studies
- Diary and journal formats to help recovery
- An effective three-stage short-term therapy approach
Customer Reviews:
Extremely well done, very helpful.......2007-10-05
As opposed to many self help books, Braiker has written a book that has substance instead of "rah-rah" fluff, and is very well written so you can actually apply the concepts into your daily life.
She does not assume that everyone has the same challenges. Reflecting that premise, at the beginning of most all sections she provides a list of questions for the reader to answer so they can tell how much they may or may not need the concepts that follow. You don't have to read it from start to finish. Instead, take the first test and jump right to sections that will provide you the most help.
Her ideas are very well thought out and clearly written. The "light turns on" as you read a paragraph and ponder how it applies to you.
If you want everyone to like you and it bothers you when they do not, or if you are addicted to pleasing your employer and work excessively, this is one of the first books I would read.
How to Grow Wiser and More Carefree.......2007-08-24
The title says it all. The late Harriet Braiker deserves accolades for delving into this mysterious self-destructive illness, the disease to please. By showing lots of examples, along with physical symptoms of heart disease, we learn the horrible toll that is exacted on its victims. Not only does she write well, she writes with a sense of urgency and caring which surpasses your average psyche book. There is modeling of "How to Say No", along with hints on spotting manipulators and stopping the disease before it spreads.
If Abused This Shoud Be Used.......2007-07-09
I have often thought that I might be some sort of habitual 'people pleaser' and have had that sentiment conveyed to me both in professional counseling sessions as well as casual conversations. Thus when I heard about this book and read some reviews of it I determined to take my first formal look at a thorough dissertaion on the subject of so-called 'people pleasing' and dove right in.
Before long it became clear to me that, though I may 'suffer' from a propensity to 'please' people, I did not fall into the syndrome as it was being portrayed in this work. The missing component for me was the lack of an abusive relationship or emasculating work environment.
Each chapter, though well documented and orderly in its presentation, made clear that the basic underlying assumption in the need to break out of the people pleasing mode was some assumed need to break free of a bad relationship or work situation.
Braiker details in each chapter how 'people pleasing' is both 1) self-defeating in that, in her view, it never results in having people be 'pleased' with you enough to justify your selfless actions as well as 2) such behavior serves only to embolden those who would take advantange of another person willing to give a little extra or do something without an expected quid pro quo agreed to in advance.
True, abusers thrive on the weaknesses of others but a willingness to treat people with unreciprocated kindness or to simply be generous and share whatever measure of good fortune one happens to enjoy is hardly psychopathic or self-destructive behavior.
I guess I'm just not that controlled by a 'need to please' so much as I am simply a generous person who believes it alright to defer to others and to share without prompting whatever material good fortunre I may have on a given day in my life.
If you think you are obessessed with the need to be well thought of and direct your daily life as well as your life plan to the goal of eing highly regarded by other people, this might be the book for you.
If you feel you do more than your share in a relationship or on the job but are not sufficiently rewarded with praise, this might be the book for you.
On the other hand, if you simply feel that not everyone appreciates you enough - including perfect strangers on the bus - then skip it. We live in a less than perfect world but that doesn't mean we should stop being nice to people or stop trying to do our best each and every time we step up to the plate at work or in an situation where our actions may be subjectively judged.
In short, it's alright to want people to like you and to do good deeds in hopes of garnering a measure of approval from others. Just don't get nailed to the cross or start muttering 'It's a far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done...' before you trade places with someone on the way to guillotine.
self help therapy.......2007-01-11
excellent for understanding pleasing behaviors and dancing on stage to perform for others
Audio Version Only.......2006-12-22
This review is for the Audio Version only.
We've probably all had the experience of reading a letter with a tone not intended by the author, which resulted in a huge misunderstanding of the writer's intent. Well, the content of this book may actually be fine, but you may very well not gain any value from it should you purchase the audio version. Although the reader has clear, defined diction and well-measureed flow to her speech, she utilizes a snooty, condescending, and utterly acerbic tone throughout her reading of the book, making it almost impossible to listen to. It's like being scolded for 3 1/2 hours, and so relentlessly that you miss the message and hear only contempt.
Whilst going through this program I repeatedly had to stop the CD for the purpose of trying to picture the words in print. I would then realize that had I been reading the same text, I would not have intonated so nastily, and would then not find the content so utterly offensive.
I cannot say with any certainty to what degree the reader reflected the actual attitudes of the author. The author does express considerable disdain for people with easy-going dispositions, as well as those in middle management and other less lofty positions in the business world. It could be that the tone of her reading was exactly what was asked for.
On the other hand, people pleasers need to learn that they do not need to be liked by everyone. Therefore, having to endure the beration of the reader may well be good practice in not running away from uncomfortable feelings -- or in searching for a way to appease the displeased.
Whatever the case, those who have a problem with being pathologically nice may well have a problem with the audio version. That is way too bad, because audiobooks are so convenient for this sort of material. In this particular case, I warn against the audio edition. Read it instead.

Book Description
A challenging look at today's evangelical church in the light of the early Christians.
Customer Reviews:
Good start, poor finish. Bercot ultimately gets it wrong........2007-07-03
Warning: This book is full of opinion, conjecture, and false conclusions that Bercot provides no basis for. He has slipped many of them in where they are most likely to go unnoticed and taken for truth. Readers beware.
Some wonderful insights to early Christianity.......2007-04-08
This book, which was brilliantly written by one Mr. Becot, was good at showing some of the flaws and differences that modern evangelicalism holds with early Christianity. It demonstrated how there are many doctrinal and sacramental practices that have been omitted or changed in modern evangelicalism that where once practiced by the first Christians. One example would be the ordinance of baptism, which Mr. Bercot shows was an essential doctrine of first and second century Christianity. And (me being LDS and believing in the apostasy of the true church of Christ) I particularly agreed with Mr. Bercot's view that the church was corrupted by the time of the time of Constantine. So this was a good book and a very interesting read on early Christianity compared to modern evangelicalism.
Perhaps one of the most important books you'll ever read.......2007-01-31
I consider this book seminal in both its topics and scope. If you are a Christian, (or even if you have no interest in church history,) "Will The Real Heretics Please Stand Up" will challenge you as perhaps no other can or will.
The early Christian writers, (sometimes referred to as "fathers,") left a body of writings that have been preserved to this day, (enough to fill a 10 volume set.) Though not inspired by God, (as were the Apostles who wrote the New Testament,) their writings do reflect what the early church believed and practiced for almost 300 years, (until the church was severely compromised by an unholy union with the Roman state under Emperor Constantine's overtures.)
When personally challenged to read these writings, David Bercot initially rejected them; discovering that their beliefs were so antiquated and out of step with contemporary beliefs. Yet, as he begin reading them again, he came to the overwhelming conclusion that what the church believes today is *drastically* different from the beliefs of the early Christians.
* Do you believe that a Christian is saved by faith alone, apart from good works? Then you believe a doctrine rejected as heresy by the early church.
* Do you believe a Christian has no choice in his salvation, but is saved solely by the choice of God? The early church understood every person has a free will and is held accountable by God according to the choices made from it. (The pagans of the day were predestinationalists, believing all of life was controlled by "fate.")
* Do believe a Christian can fight and kill in a war, and still go to heaven? The early Christians knew that those who lived by the sword would be killed by the sword, and therefore strove to live meek and harmless lives; preferring to suffer death at the hands of unbelievers rather than fight to save their lives, (like their Master did before them.)
Included in this book is a very simple and understandable description of exactly where and how the church came to disown these original teachings, and why it currently believes and practices something entirely different today. Bercot's style is remarkable in its persuasion and meekness; refraining from attacking or belittling those who take the opposing view. (However, his arguments are unanswerable, due to their unavoidable logic and evidentiary conclusions.)
* If you are a Calvinist, (or of that persuasion,) you will not like this book.
* If you are a modern Evangelical, and believe in "Once Saved, Always Saved," you will not like this book.
* If you are participant or supporter of any war or military action, you will be highly offended by this book.
In short, if you are a denier of the literal words and teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ, you are utterly out-of-fellowship with the Believers of the first and second centuries, for they strove to follow Jesus as literally and as earnestly as they could. (And you would be cast out of their churches as a first-class heretic.)
The church today simply does not believe what Jesus taught. The early church did, and we have their writings as evidence of what they believed and accomplished. Scripture decidedly foretells of an end-times apostasy, or "great falling away." When you compare the beliefs of the early church with what is believed and practiced today, you can clearly see that we are most decidedly in the very center of this prophecy. (And its only going to get worse.)
"Flee from the wrath to come!" It was preached 2,000 years ago, and it needs to be preached today. Only the target is YOU, dear Christian, and not some poor pagan unbeliever. (For it will be better for him in the day of judgment than for you, if you refuse to walk in *all* the commands of the Lord Jesus.)
Eye Opening, a Real Wake Up Call.......2007-01-10
You may not care about what the churches the apostles started were like, or you may think that no one knows what they're like. This book will change your mind. This is a well-researched book, very accurate and fair to the early church writings. I've read everything the 2nd century church wrote as a result of the motivation provided by this book, and he spoke truly about what they said.
If you want to continue on the way you have been, don't read this book, because it will shake you up. Bercot is a lawyer, and he argues powerfully for his points in this book. I've listened to plenty of people try to answer his arguments, both when I worked with David (in 1992), and since, including a few months of talk shows on the radio in Sacramento, CA. These arguments are compelling and un-answerable.
On top of all this, the book is incredibly well-written. It is easy to understand and completely captivating. Every chapter ends with a carrot on a stick to drag you for or against your will into the next one. Don't start it at night, because you'll be late for work the next day. You will have to finish it.
This book, because it answers so many questions with straightforward answers and puts the whole world of the early church at your fingertips ought to be a top 10 Christian book of all time.
Church history in a nutshell -- and what to do about it!.......2006-06-12
I was first introduced to Bercot by his masterly "Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs" so I all the more readily took a look at this book. The result was that I couldn't put it down and started hunting for what else he had written on the subject.
Bercot knows what he is talking about from his years of study and research into the Patristic writings -- and this shows through in his writings as he weaves the basic principles of Christianity together and compares them with the pitiful evangelical church of today.
If you are one who is serious about your faith, please read this book. You can find out more about David Bercot on his publishing company's web site at scrollpublishing.com.
