A classic from the day it was published in 1991, Sophia: The Goddess of Wisdom is an intensely scholarly yet highly poetic work. Modern history (his story) may have buried the Great Goddess under suffocating layers of denial and revisionism, yet as we move deeper into the "sophianic millennium," scraping away the fallow ground of patriarchy, She emerges anew. Author Caitlin Matthews unveils the veiled Black Goddess (the primal manifestation of the Divine Feminine) in her many hiding places over the last several thousand years. Disempowered and hacked to pieces, she has survived in the major Western religions, philosophies, and mystery schools in many guises. With the aid of the author's trained and intuitive eye, the reader tracks Her faint footsteps through the long dark night of the feminine soul. Along with The White Goddess by Robert Graves, this book is a must-read for those who wish to understand why the Goddess fled, where She went, and how we can reaffirm Her as the giver of practical and spiritual wisdom--celebrating Her primacy in the manifestation of all things. --P. Randall Cohan
Book Description

Sophia: Goddess of Wisdom, Bride of God.......2006-02-11
I am so sorry I didn't read this book sooner. Caitlin Matthews has more information on Sofia than I could of hoped for. Bless her for sharing her knowledge. An excellent read, destined to be a classic if not already. Truly a book for all women. Thank you Caitlin Matthews.
Food for Woman's Spiritual Journey.......2005-11-14
This book treats the Divine Feminine in various guises in many cultures. I found this book extremely uplifting and inspiring. The subject was treated in a profound manner, affording many deep spiritual insights. I was especially interested in what she had to say about the divine feminine in the Hebrew tradition. Ample annotations are given for further study.
Oh well.......2004-02-05
I'll be blunt. I didn't care for this book. I bought it thinking it would delve into the subject of the Gnostic Sophia. Instead the author goes this way and that and hardly even mentions Her. I really think the title was misleading. As a sidenote, Lucifer is given a bad rap in this book and many concede that Lucifer plays an important part in later understandings of Gnosis.
THE BRIDE OF GOD.......2001-01-06
The book is loaded with good information regarding the proper role of Sophia in relationship to God and to the earth. Filled to perfection of truths, that one would not have to study further. It is written very well, and very easily understood. It is remarkable how much truth she gathered with the world trying to suppress the female deity of the Godhead. All efforts to abolish the authority of Sophia were defeated upon the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran. The writings of Jesus in the "Pistis Sophia", G.R.S.Mead, would never be accepted by churchs because they told the whole world "Jesus never wrote a book". Please read "She Who Is", Elizabeth Johnson, and "Prayers to She Who Is", William Cleary. Also, The Goddess Re-awakening" Shirley Nicholson. Of course, the writings at Qumran are in the book "The Nag Hammadi Library", James Robinson, don't skip the writing "Sophia of Jesus Christ" in this book. The woman Sophia is the Bride of God, only Bride.
Book Description
In the Gospels of the Bible there are a few comments about Mary Magdalene here and there. But in the Gnostic scriptures that have been discovered, there are tantalizing hints that both her relationship to Jesus and her role among Jesus' disciples may have been profoundly important. Among several schools of Gnostic Christianity, Mary plays an essential role in the revelation of the gospel.
Here, for the first time in print, is a Sophian Gospel of St. Mary Magdalene. No secret oral tradition as extensive as this has ever been recorded, and none has ever presented a Gnostic view of Mary Magdalene as she is portrayed in this groundbreaking work-as a powerful holy woman, the innermost disciple and beloved wife of Jesus, and a Christed woman who is coequal with Jesus in the Christ revelation.

Magnificent!.......2007-09-27
In over twenty years of mystical study I have never come across a book that has so illuminated the teachings of St. Mary Magdalene and Yeshua (Jesus). When one considers the parables, some included in the traditional New Testament, some presented here for the first time (to me), with both mind and intuition and heart, one experiences what can best be described as the "fullness" of the Gospels. Truly, we have been recipients of only half of Jesus' teachings. The Magdalene represents a compliment to Jesus that, when felt within, brings both to life in a magnificent portrait of the Eternal Soul whose goal is to remind us that our essential nature is Light and that we are so far beyond the flesh and blood experience, that to accept less than our mystical natures is a true adulteration of our sacred identities. This is a great and timely gift to the world--to both men and women--but, particularly to the clergy who have been denied the grace of knowing this Eternal Soul in its majestic, loving and powerful fullness.
The power of the Magdalene........2007-01-30
This title just seemed appropriate to me as I was reading this wonderful book. I received it last week through Amazon and I devoured it since then. I am still discovering wonderful things about this book and about Mary Magdalene. All I have to say is-WOW!! No wonder the early Church felt so threatened by her, by the power she wielded. And why wouldn't they-she was the one who truly understood, believed, and accepted Christ's word. Christ himself had seen this; which was why she received special teaching because her heart was more tuned to heaven than the so-called 12 disciples. She herself had disciples that she taught and instructed, AND she was the first to encounter the risen Savior. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that Mary Magdalene was the REAL rock on which Jesus built his church (or intended to).
Worth reading--but with a critical mind.......2006-12-29
Hmmm. I'm not really sure what to say about this book. I think that's because I wasn't sure what I expected of it in the first place.
Probably the most important part of the book is the introduction, because it's the most informative. Here the author tells the reader that the traditions of Mary Magdalene have been orally transmitted through the ages and that these traditions have remained purposely fluid and changeable in order to meet the needs of the practitioners of the philosophy/faith through time. This is a good thing from the perspective of the initiate, since a rigid code tends to become obsolete. Unfortunately it also means that they reflect the sophistication, beliefs, values, and culture of the time of the practicing community transmitting them. Any of the actual beliefs and practices of the original disciples of, or of Mary Magdalene herself if she existed, has probably been heavily distorted if it exists at all in the modern form of the belief system.
Historically speaking this means that little of biographical value probably exists in the events recorded in Malachi's book, St. Mary Magdalene: The Gnostic Tradition of the Holy Bride. Her birth, character, and life experiences reflect more the hidden mystery religion underlying the stories than anything like a real person. As Freke and Gandy suggest in their book, The Jesus Mysteries, many of the traditional stories of Jesus (and of Mary Magdalene) may have arisen in response to the cultural phenomenon of mystery religions common at the time.
The death, physical resurrection, and ascension to heaven of a male semi-deity and the devotion of his female counterpart became the common thread through many of the religions of the late Roman Period. The female in the role might be wife, sister, or mother or a combination of all three. In the New Testament as it has come down to us, the "three Marys" provide the dying and rising Jesus with Mary the mother, Mary the sister, and Mary the consort as separate and distinct individuals, while in Malachi's book St. Mary Magdalene, the author suggests that the saint herself mystically embodied all three.
From the point of view of the initiate--prospective or practicing--the gospel of this saint represents encoded information about the spiritual beliefs of this Gnostic sect and about its rites of passage. It is a highly feminized doctrine, and its intention seems to be to reestablish the rights and presence of women in the religious domain, something that the more patriarchal literalist Christian traditions seem to have gone to great lengths to suppress, as did the traditionalists and centralists of the Old Testament. For the latter two, the status quo was the mission and ulterior motive. The goals of the Gnostic religions seem to have been that of freeing the individual, male or female, from those in society who profited most from promoting the status quo, particularly that with respect to God, and of personalizing the relationship with him. (My guess is that this was the ultimate mission of Jesus, if he or someone like him existed, which is why the Jewish priesthood was more concerned with his activities than the Roman governors of the province were.)
The appeal of this religion/philosophy to a modern individual will vary considerably. The agnostic will find little that appeals to his/her--probably--more analytical mind. The stories of Magdalene will probably seem like poor fiction. The religious practices and philosophy more like a club for juveniles with secret decoder rings, etc. For some it might have the appeal that Masons and Eastern Star have, more of a social club. The true believer seeking knowledge by mystic means will probably find what he/she's looking for, especially women who often feel left out of traditional religion despite their devotion.
For myself and from the perspective of religion, I'd have to say the concept of a divine consort--both of the anthropomorphized deity and for God himself--seems something of a step backward. The concept of a sexual duality, with a male and a female god, harkens back to the earliest human concepts of divinity. If the "Great Time" gives validity to a belief, then certainly the sexual duality of divinity, God the Father and The Earth Mother, has time on its side, but with greater sophistication in society, one would expect a more sophisticated belief system as well. A god who is neither male nor female, who has no material existence that defines his beginning and end, who is all powerful, all knowing, and outside of time itself, seems less primitive than what's presented in this book.
From the point of view of culture, the cult of Mary Magdalene certainly seems to have served its purpose best in the European Middle Ages. It probably served to liberate the mind of the average person most from the control exercised by the Roman Church at the time and did so at great peril. Nothing else even compared to this until the fall of Constantinople and of Spain brought the deluge of Greco-Roman and Arabic literature to the European world and set the ball rolling for the Renaissance. For that at least one has to give Gnostic religions major credit.
Mary Magdalene is in the House!.......2006-08-27
What a book. Just when I thought he couldn't outdo his Gospel of Thomas, Tau Malachi delivers this absolutely profound work, Saint Mary Magdalene. Gnosticism rules. Even though I don't agree with all its tenets, that is. :) Fall in love with Magdalene, co-saviouress with Jesus. What a life she led, and the teachings that go with it. I love the exercises Tau Malachi gives to bring the Bride into your life, actually call her to you. Life-changing book is putting it mildly.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
An oral tradition finally revealed . . . .......2006-06-04
Tau Malachi brings St. Mary Magdalene to vivid life in this book, which contains teachings of his Sophian Gnostic lineage that have previously only been transmitted orally. Although I've read quite a bit on the Magdalene, this book makes me feel as though I've been brought into her presence in a way few others have. Highly recommended.

A constant companion.......2007-01-26
This is not a wedding planner ... it doesn't have lists of questions to ask a caterer or other logistical details. But it's the perfect complement to any wedding planning approach. It helped me focus on what was truly important about my wedding, and let go of a lot of things that weren't important. It's a very small book, so I put it in my purse and carried it with me everywhere during the last few weeks before my wedding. I read bits of it on the bus, waiting in lines, whenever I had a few moments to spare. It reminded me to breathe and savor the joy of whatever I was doing, which helped keep me sane, calm and grounded. I highly recommend this book to anyone getting married. With quotes from Sesame Street alongside zen traditions, there's something for everyone!
Calming and humorous, a real sanity-saver!.......2005-03-30
Incredibly insightful! I was originally "put off" by the title because I'm not a student or practicer of Zen philosophy, and in fact, am not particularly "spiritual." However, I picked up this book out of curiousity, and I am SO glad I did! This book is for any bride experiencing the occasional, or persistent, feelings of anxiety or stress while planning. Not only is it filled with incredibly helpful practical advice to find some calmness in your wedding planning whirlwind, it's also very humorous and entertaining! Completely different from any other wedding book out there, this will definitely compliment any books you may already have. And it's small enough to toss in your handbag for ready access any time stress strikes! It's not a big or long volume, but it's all about quality over quantity here. Get this book and kiss your days of being a frantic, stressed-out bride goodbye!
Book Description
In Spirit Brides, a collection of three short stories, Kahlil Gibran portrays his belief in the overwhelming power of love in human nature. In "The Ash of Centuries and the Immortal Flame," Gibran describes a love that unites souls beyond time and social restrictions. "Marta al-Baniyah" expresses Gibran's views on the exploitation of women and the poor. He then makes a cutting commentary on the contrast between the ecclesiastical hierarchy and the simplicity of the teachings of Jesus in his final story, "Yuhanna the Madman."

Book Description
Korea's most talked-about series in 2005! Born into a shaman family, Sunbi has inherited the power to see and communicate with spirits just like her grandmother, a notable shaman and savior of their little fishing village in the South Sea. Early on, she sees things like an imposter shaman being thrashed by a dragon of the deep, and doesn't understand that none of her schoolmates can see such things. Her powers make her the amorous target of hedonistic demons even as a child. Long shielded from the reality of her power, she finally learns the secret of her mother's death, and why her grandmother was never able to leave their village. Enter Sunbi's world in this mind-boggling psychological chiller!
Customer Reviews:
DOKEBI BRIDE.......2007-06-08
A story of young Korean girl, Sunbi, who can see spirits that other cannot and living with society that does not accept it. As she grows older, she learns more about shamans and Dokebis from her grandma. She also becomes more isolated from society as she is the subject of ridicule from her classmates. The story is interesting adding a mixture of fantansy in a modern day of life in Korea. It is simple to follow each page as it leads to the next without being lost. The artwork is clear and concise as characters are distinguishable from each other, especially the beautifully drawn Sunbi. The Dokebis are spirits that may look scary, but are actually quite comical. Just check it out on netcomics.com
SEEING SPIRITS.......2006-09-21
Sunbi was never treated right in the village she grew up in South Korea because she came from a family of shamans. This is pretty ironic because her grandmother, Okboon, was the reason the village prospered at one time and allows it to survive even to this day. You see, Okboon could see and communicate with spirits and was able to talk these gods into helping the village. Okboon raised Sunbi after her mother went crazy and died and her father abandoned her as he moved on with his life in the city. Now Okboon is dead and Sunbi moves in with her father and his new wife and step-daughter, who aren't too happy about her intruding on their lives. What Sunbi will have to figure out is whether she truly belongs there or is her destiny tied to the village she left behind? And what will she do with the power she has inherited from her grandmother, the power to see and talk to spirits in an age when such beings are becoming obsolete and fading into legend?
Dokebi Bride has a nice mood of strangeness, beauty, and passion for nature that make a great combination. I was impressed by the author's storytelling skills here in which most of the book was a flashback that still kept my interest and gave a lot of depth to the plot and Sunbi's character that would have been lacking if told chronologically. Marley gets you to care a lot about everyone involved here, from Sunbi to her grandmother to the gods and the village. The art is great and unique. This first volume gets me excited about the next installment.
Beautiful artwork, engaging characters.......2006-07-05
I bought Dokebi Bride vol. 1 and 2 because the artwork (even the limited amount that was shown on Amazon's search inside feature) was absolutely breathtaking. I am not a huge fan of the traditional, "cartoony" sort of graphic novel, and though it does occasionally make appearances in Dokebi Bride, the artwork is mostly carefully done, intricate, delicate, detailed and-- beautiful.
Vol. 1, like most manga/graphic novels tends to be less on plot and more on introduction (which is as it should be). That being said, I was intrigued enough by young Sunbi, her grandmother, and the estranged father to read on to volume 2.
Volume 2 was absolutely amazing. Dark, yes. It has some scary images, including a "The Grudge"-like monster. I don't think it would be anything to frighten a more mature young teen, but it will put a little trepidation in their hearts next time they look in a mirror. :)
The story just starts to develop in Volume 2, as Sunbi attends school (or doesn't attend, as the case may be) in Seoul, and she finds a friend, though reluctantly on her part, in the class president.
I have no complaints on the story line, though the translation seems a little off in places.
I am eagerly looking forward to Volume 3 in September.
Sunbi.......2006-06-07
Sunbi, the granddaughter and main character has been blessed(?) with special abilities to interact with dokebis. Whether it pays to be able to communicate or the possibility that these demons will haunt her as was the case of her grandmother(?) it deserves a read, as this story seems to intensify and fly me back to a land of dragons and spirits. The storyline is captivating and drawings, awesome.
The best manga ever!!!.......2006-04-29
Okay, so we call these Manhwa rather than manga.
But whatever the category it falls into, this is the best graphic novel I have ever read in my entire book-reading life!
I would recommend this book to everyone from even elementary school kids (there's a few parts with ugly Dokebis but there's no violence) to mature readers. Adults will find this book more engaging than any other graphic novel they are used to.
Plus, they will learn about a completely new culture: Korean culture. This is a fresh new title everyone should check out.
This book has completely changed my conception of manga.

Original take on wedding planning.......2003-11-16
The months leading up to a wedding are not only exhilarating, they're often anxiety-inducing. It's a shame when the logistics take precedence over all else, so that the bride is often the least likely to enjoy the occasion. This book aims to counter that trend by offering numerous suggestions for achieving balance before, during, and after the big day. While the first part of the book covers health issues and birth control options, the rest of the book tackles issues rarely touched on in wedding planning tomes: changing identity, extended family feuds, how to integrate your work and your friends into your new married life, stepparenting, balancing two religions under one roof, and making your marriage stronger. Interspersed throughout are "Wedding Wisdom" quotes from brides. Could there be a better bridal shower gift?
