Oh my goodness!! Every parent should have this book. I am seeing the principles in this book work with our son. And as I share the principles with other parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. They are seeing their relationships with the children in their life change. I only wish that my parents would have had this book, while I was growing up. It would have answered so many of my behavior issues as a child. Thank God for this book.

After reading the fourth book in the series I thought it could just not get any better... boy was I wrong! Harry staves off an attack by Dementors, saves his cousin's life, and has to face a trial at the Ministry of Magic, all before the school year even begins.

With Voldemort back, Dumbledore has recalled the Order of the Phoenix, a group of Wizards and Witches that fought against You-Know-Who the last time. Harry is hidden away for a short period of time at the secret head quarters of the Order, while awaiting his trail at the Ministry of Magic for 'Under Age Use of Magic away from School'. It soon becomes evident that the Minister of Magic is not only determined to not believe that Voldemort has returned, but has even started a compaign to discredit both Harry and Dumbledore to try and prevent people from believing them.

During the School year Harry and the other fifth years have increasingly large piles of school work to complete, and to perpare for their OWLs, which come at the end of their fifth year. Meanwhile the students, and teachers, have a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher to deal with, who has been appointed by the Ministry of Magic! Things at Hogwarts go from bad to worse, as this new teacher is given a wide range of powers over the other teachers via a stream of Ministry 'Educational Decrees'. Meanwhile Harry is plagued by troubling dreams, of traveling down a darkened hallway to a mysterious door, which leaves his scar burning more and more intensely. Perhaps even more puzzling, and disturbing, to Harry is the fact that Dumbledore seems to be going to lengths to ignore him.

Anyone who has enjoyed the past books in this series will love 'The Order of the Phoenix. This book takes the mystical fantasy elements of the earlier books, and ties them into an increasingly darkening plot line, pitting Harry and his friends against even worse dangers around every corner.

Entertaining and kept my interest.......2007-09-21

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was far darker than the previous book but kept my interest throughout. Many of the characters are either becoming more sinister or are displaying a great tenacity to fight evil. Overall, I enjoyed this book far more than the previous one although the Potter series, as a whole, still doesn't strike me a "great literature" but rather an entertaining experience. I will say that as the plot progressed, I've become more eager to find out what's going to happen next; therefore, I'm going to start book six tonight.

Adolescents at Hogwarts.......2007-09-17

In this fifth book of the Harry Potter series we join Harry at the first part of the summer after his fourth year at Hogwarts. Harry finds himself back with the Dursleys, isolated in the Muggles' world once again. But all this changes as Dementors attack him. We then move into the school year where things do not look up for Harry. It seems that the Ministry of Magic has made sure that no one would believe of Harry's encounter with Voldemort of nothing more than his imagination.

During the school year it seems our hero does not deal well with his adolescent years. He is clueless about everything; what is happening to him, his friends, relationships, and common sense nor is he able to take advice. It is his almost constant whining, inability to control his anger and ineptitude in daily teenage life that has me drop my rating to three. Even with this the plot is moved along as we are introduced to the Order of the Phoenix, Hogwarts curriculum trying to cause change by the Ministry of Magic, and Harry scar gives more warnings.

I am still going to give it five stars.........2007-09-13

I too thought the book was very drawn out, however, I understand why this needed to happen. The Order of the Phoenix takes place after the fourth (Duh) in which the readers come to find that the lovely Voldermort has come back and stronger than ever. Plagued with constant ridicule from the daily prophet and the minister of magic Harry must remain calm and continue to do as he does and fight the snickers and the sneers from the people at Hogwarts. I really liked the beginning of this book because it started off with some pretty good suspense. There is an introduction of two new characters and I thought very much that they added quite nicely to the dynamic of the story. I positivley promise that you are going to loathe one of the new people so much, it will make your head spin. The kids at Hogwarts begin to take matters in their own hands when forces are way out of their control and the book moves nicely into some history of Harry's family and professor snape. The end is a great ending and a brilliant set up for the sixth ( I have already started it, soo good). If you have seen the movie and are wondering if this book may be for you, just pick it up and enjoy it.

There are two hypothetical families that the book follows throughout the course of the program. Lengthy backstories are given for both. One is a family where the wife dropped out of jr college when she married, and supported her husband financially through college, dropping her job as a secretary when she has her first child. This family lives in the midwest. The other family is ultimately a single Mom, living on the coast, who's husband leaves her because he feels emasculated by her career success. She gets the kids, since they "both know even without discussing it that they are primarily her responsibility".

I'm not looking for a book that covers every type of family everywhere, and I don't need it to be totally politically correct. But enough of a backstory is given here, that we can pretty much predict how these folks vote. (I'd also venture a guess as to how the author votes.) And the stories are completely irrelevant. Other books (like Supernanny's) focus on behaviors and techniques, and family dynamics are only discussed as they pertain to the children. This book devotes too much time to guilting women back into the kitchen, IMHO. While this is a fine choice for some, there are many modern families that this doesn't work for, for whatever reason.

If you're looking for a book with step-families, blended families, multi-cultural families, same-sex parents, stay-at-home-Dad's, extended families, dual-income families, or any other perfectly valid variation on Ward and June, look elsewhere. You won't find any of those in this book. You *will* find them in many parts of America.

I do think that the book was very very helpful. It had comprehensive information written in a clear and friendly way. I am pretty sure every parent has something to benefit from reading this book. Even if you do not follow the 5-week program strictly, you can walk away with the general principles that the book draws your attention to. Very highly recommended.

Some people think they can just let their kids do whatever and they'll just naturally be angels. Attachment Parenting is the term for that. Well, I tried that and ended up with kids that had the attitude "I can do whatever and get away with it." In other words, my kids ended up being, I hate to say it, spoiled! I checked this book out at the library and read it word-for-word and I cannot begin to tell you how much this book has changed my life. I don't say that lightly. My family has done a 180! All because of this book. This book has literally since Day 1 transformed me into a better mother, better wife, and better friend. You think the tips you get out of here will just make your kid better, no, it makes YOU BETTER! It gives excellent tips on how to communicate with your child, how to make yourself more patient when you feel like you are about to lose it, and how to improve your relationships overall. I feel like this is a more loving family. I am definitely going to go out and buy this book! I can't thank Rex and Nicholas enough. They are parents themselves and they really know kids.

I teach 8th grade and my students and I LOVE this novel. There are several good twists,turns, and nice surprises along the way. It may require some thinking on their part to "get into it", but I have never had one student tell me that they didn't like the book when they were finished. In fact, students would get angry if we had to skip a day! This is a great historical fiction that really sparks a great deal of discussion about he Civil War. When I read other kids complaining about this book I thought of something Eleanor Roosevelt once said. "It takes curiosity to gain intellegence." So, if you're curious about the Civil War, this is a good read!

I feel bad rating this book so low but I also don't want to rate it higher because I hate this book. The only reason why I read this book was because I had to read it for my english class at school. If it wasn't for the class there is absolutely no way I would have read this book. the teachers thought that we should read a civil war novel for english because were doing a civil war unit in social studies. Before we even started the novel I thought we were doing plenty of civil war, but no we have to do even more civil war. I probably wouldn't have such a hard time with this book if I didn't have to do school work with. I had such a hard time understanding some parts of this book because the family had so many people in it. I struggled to read this book every night not only because it was boring, but because I had to try to understand it so I could do the work that went with it. The only thing that happens in this book is in the begging the civil war is about to start and then some people from this family fight in the war and then they write letters to the family. Thats litteraly the only thing that happens in this book. In my opinion this book was boring and I would not recomend reading it, unless you really want to because you have nothing else to do.

Fabulous Civil War historical fiction for 5th - 6th graders!!.......2007-01-02

I can't say enough good things about this book!!

I was an insatiable reader as a child and this was one of my favorite books! I read this with 5th graders as a teacher and fell in love with it all over again! Many of my students had NEVER read a chapter book on their own, let alone read for pleasure, but they became captivated with reading as a result of this book and went on to read non-fiction books about the Civil War, biographies about Abraham Lincoln, Rifles for Watie, etc., on their own. This is significant since I taught in a low socio-economic area (95% free or reduced lunch). If kids find this boring, it is because it is over their heads - I read this WITH my students. They each had a copy and we read it aloud together in unison, stopping to clarify and discuss. Using historical fiction to introduce history makes it interesting and "digestible" for young people. It also sparks a desire to know more. A teacher can't tell a student everything, s/he must inspire them to investigate further. When students endeavor to learn more on their own, they are on the road to becoming educated. Abraham Lincoln himself only had one year of schooling - he educated himself with BOOKS!

Specifically, this book is about a farming family in Civil War times torn apart by the war. It helps students understand the realities of the war that pitted "brother against brother" when the oldest son goes to fight for the "other" side. When he discovers that his brother was killed in battle, this big, hulk of a man sends word to his "mama" that he did not fire the shot that killed his brother. The book makes real the pain each family member must have felt. It helps students understand that the war was not just about slavery, it was also about states' rights and whether or not the people of the US wanted the federal government to be able to tell them what to do. The future of our government depended on the outcome of the war. It also helps them understand human rights and the fact that there are many gray areas in the complex world of politics and that issues rarely have an easy black or white answer.

PARENTS, this book is worth reading with your child line by line if necessary! It can be tough, but it helps young people grow up a little and see the world more clearly, giving them a glimpse of a world outside of themselves.

Books can change you and this one will for the better, without the shocking slap in the face that sometimes accompanies life lessons. You will notice deeper understanding, more maturity, a sense of accomplishment when your child masters this book. THAT is how you develop genuine self-esteem.

For other character developing books, try The Secret Garden, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Anne of Green Gables. I can't explain why, but my 6th grade boys liked these as much as the girls, although they would never have picked them up on their own. Sounds crazy - I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't experienced it myself!

I had to read this book for school. My favorite part was when I got to the end and the torture was over. I'm a HUGE reader and I absolutely love books, but I think this is the only story I can say that I didn't like it AT ALL.

I did find one good thing about it. I'm a person who has problems falling asleep. I started reading the assigned chapter right before bed, and it was a very good sleep medication; it was that boring.

It had no story line whatsoever besides a detailed account of Civil War battles (and letters home that had such bad grammar and spelling it was painful to read them). All the characters were flat and unrealistic. It was the worst book I ever had to read.

Please don't waste your time on it.

Sometimes when I read a review by someone who's just raging about the book, I think, "Well, why didn't they just quit?"

I'll dispel that notion. I had to struggle through this book for a literature class, so I had no choice to quit. Now, here's my idea of what this book would look like if it had chapter titles.

This collection of five complete, illustrated Dr. Seuss classics is a "hatful," but you'd have to have a Cat-in-the-Hat-sized chapeau to contain all the treasures in this hefty book. Within its pages you'll find Theodor Seuss Geisel's exuberant creations Bartholomew and the Oobleck (1949), If I Ran the Zoo (1950), Horton Hears a Who! (1954), The Sneetches and Other Stories (1961), and Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book (1962). In Bartholomew and the Oobleck, a non-rhyming Seuss story, prepare for an eyeful of green goo. In If I Ran the Zoo, young Gerald McGrew decides he would make a few changes if he ran the zoo--including the acquisition of more unusual beasts (such as an Elephant-Cat) from places "quite out-of-the-way." In addition to the potentially unsettling concept of traversing continents in search of wild beasts to trap and cage, there are a couple of dated references that parents may want to preview before reading to kids. For example, McGrew proclaims, "I'll hunt in the mountains of Zomba-ma-Tant/With helpers who all wear their eyes at a slant,/And capture a fine fluffy bird called the Bustard/Who only eats custard with sauce made of mustard."

As for the rest of this delightful collection, Horton Hears a Who! is a tale that teaches us "a person's a person, no matter how small." And of course, you may remember the Star-Belly Sneetches, the "snooty old smarties" who pranced antagonistically in front of the Plain-Belly Sneetches, or Mrs. McCave who had 23 sons and named them all Dave. Finally, Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book is about the snortiest snorers, the curious sleepwalking Crandalls, World-Champion Sleep-Talkers, and other somnambulant types--a perfect bedtime finale to a book that could keep youngsters entertained all night. This book is great for children. I rated it 4 stars because I think the book is larger than it should be for children. The book has several stories in it and is rather thick. The stories are great for children learning to read on their own and learning rhyming.

Wonderful Seuss.......2005-08-09

Typically wonderful Seuss. A collection of favorites which still entertain and delight childern of all ages! Told in the whimsical, melodic, rhyming style that is Seuss' alone these stories present the challenges and triumph of basic human goodness that we want our children to learn. I highly recommend this collection. I read them to my grandson and notice that by the end of a story the whole house has tuned in and is anxiously awaiting that heart tickling sensation that comes at the conclusion of every Suess tale.

A good buy, but Six by Seuss is better.......2005-03-23

Two of the books collected here are classics (Sleep Book and The Sneetches) and the other three are also pretty good, so this is well worth buying. The now out-of-print "Six by Seuss" however, is an even better value, since it includes five of his very best stories (Yertle, Mulberry Street, the Grinch, the Lorax, and Horton Hatches the Egg) under one cover. I would recommend looking for that book first, then getting this if your child turns out to be a hardcore Seuss fan.

Some of the best of Dr. Seuss.......2004-11-16

Here's a rare book that gives you more than it promises. While it's titled "Five Favorite Dr. Seuss Stories," you actually get EIGHT stories. That's because there's three extra ones ("The Zax," "Too Many Daves," and "What Was I Scared Of?") included with "The Sneetches and Other Stories."

It's hard to say enough good things about this book. You have a collection of delightful stories, fun wordplay ("I'll go to the far-away mountains of Tobsk / Near the river of Nobsk, and I'll bring back an obsk"), nice life lessons ("A person's a person no matter how small"), and some of the most imaginative artwork anywhere. I enjoy these as much as my kids (ages 3 and a half, and 2).

The only negative I can think of is that the book is rather large for a child to easily rest on his or her lap. If you're reading to your child, that's less of an issue.

If I HAD to pick, I'd say that "Sneetches" is our household's favorite story in this collection, followed by "Horton Hears a Who." But occasionally we'll opt for one of the others. It's good to have a selection of stories, because kids' interests change and they can suddenly decide a different one is the one they want to hear all the time.

Most of these stories are good for reading to your kids right from birth, because the rhyming play and colorful pictures are fun no matter the level of comprehension. The one exception is "Bartholomew and the Oobleck," which is a bit more involved story that probably is best for ages five and up.

I've recommended this book to countless friends since I first read it a couple of years ago. They all agree this is a great book. I've reread various sections a couple of times to remind myself what the ultimate goal in parenting truly is: for our children to be happy in their adult lives in whatever they choose to do with their lives.

I decided to read this book after I had had the opportunity to participate in an educational seminar with Dr. Hallowell. What he had to say then and in the book is straightforward and not complicated. The key to happiness is ongoing engagement in the cycle of connection, play, practice, mastery, and recognition with connection being the foundation. He uses examples from his own life and those of his children to illustrate these points. His is a humble, life-affirming approach that can provide positive guidance for adults, especially those who are parents of children.

This is an excellent book, which shows that in childhood you plant the seeds for adult happiness. It gives concrete suggestions about what to do for your children in order to improve their odds of becoming happy adults.

A few things struck me in particular: the idea of flow, that we are happiest when we are in activities that we get so wrapped up in that we forget ourselves, the concept that children need to learn how to fail, and how to cope with failure, that being bored is an opportunity, you needn't fill up every minute of your child's time, or orchestrate their play.

I'd recommend it to anyone with children, or anyone, such as teachers, that deal with children. Even an unhappy adult, might find out that they have the seeds of happiness within them, they just need some care to make them grow.

I think what's best about It's Hard to Be Five is that it gets right to the heart of what it is like to be five in a way that isn't condescending or patronizing...it's written in language that is engaging and that kids can relate to easily. The pictures are colorful and zany...very high energy, in all of her books, I think the art really goes a long way toward bringing the message to life for the readers (or listeners, as the case may be as they make excellent read aloud material). At an age where they want to be more "grown up" and independent, yet they still have trouble choosing big-boy (or girl) behavior over the instinctual "little kid" gut reactions, this book is a welcome way to let kids know that what they are feeling is normal while encouraging them to be the big-girl (or boy) that they are!

Overall, I give it five stars, The art work and text work seamlessly creating a book that is fun to read and a feast for the eyes. My kids just love poring over the pictures after we read these...there's so much to absorb that provides an additional layer of fun and enjoyment above and beyond the story!! I'd recommend It's Had To Be Five, it is a simply a fun way to explore the feelings many children experience as they become big boys and girls and are expected to act that way but they still FEEL like reacting in highly emotional and instinctual ways.

Very early in the book John Granger recalls Professor Moody's trunk with 7 locks. Each time Dumbledore inserts a key into a different lock the trunk opens and contains different items. This book is exactly like that trunk! I have read or listened to every Harry Potter book (except Phoenix) more times than I can count and yet each time that Granger brings out a new key my reaction was "I didn't know that that was in there!" I even understand now why I didn't enjoy re-reading Phoenix (the alchemical "black" stage of the series)as much as the other books.

I didn't read this book until after I had read Deathly Hallows and I still truly enjoyed reading Granger's predictions. Some of them were spot on, while others weren't, but the premises on which they were based were solid. I had to laugh at one point, when a reference was made to the sun/Sol and moon/Luna coming together as part of an alchemical wedding. It wasn't precisely a prediction, but in Deathly Hallows Luna certainly did arrive at the wedding wearing brilliant yellow, "sun colors."

The best part is that I can reread the entire Potter series one more time, with a new perspective, and be assured of appreciating details that I have missed before.

If you've already finished "Deathly Hallows," and you think this book is now obsolete, think again! This author's take on how Rowling thought while writing the HP series is fascinating and highly educational. Granger could teach a college course on the post-modern literary aspects of Harry Potter, and students would have to go on a wait list just to sign up for the course. Though Granger, I think, would be an annoying prof. His narrative voice has an edge of sarcasm and snobbery - which is hilarious and incredibly irritating at the same time.

Throughout reading this book, I was also fascinated with how on-target were many of his predictions for the "Deathly Hallows" book. At times he is way off-base, and other times you think he must have had an advance copy because he is so precise in his insights about how Rowling will think in crafting the 7th book. I learned a lot about this fascinating series - why I was duped by Rowling in almost every single book, why the themes are so compelling across 3 generations of readers ... and I was left wondering if we will ever again see a book or series like Harry Potter in our lifetime.

This book is for those who are serious about literature. It is designed for college educated or those who read at the college level. I have a Master's Degree though not in literature. Parts of the book were a challenge to understand.

This is a very cute book but... It ends very abruptly and is not quite long enough for my 1 and a half year old. She loves trying to count the fish on top, and trying to say the color names, but just a few more pages would have made this book a lot better.

I had Dr. Seuss' books as a child and want my baby to enjoy them as much as I did. This nursery book is brightly colored, very sturdy and my 5-mo old keeps reaching for it. The plastic fish on the top make noise and baby loves to keep count with them. I'm very very happy with this purchase. I also reccomend other board books form this nursery collection.
