R.A. Salvatore's prelude to the Demon Wars Sagas The Highwayman is a stimulating ride into the early history of Corona and the vehicle is the creation a new, Drizzt-rivaling hero. Salvatore spins the tragic tale of an Abellican missionary who returns to Honce from the desert land Behr with wonders from the ancient Jhesta Tu monastery. At his side is his wife, a Jhesta Tu mystic. His dreams of uniting the teachings of the Jhesta Tu and "The Church of Blessed Abelle" are broken against the realities of bigotry and the young Abellican Church's struggle for political favor against the Druid-like Samhaists. But from their doomed union will rise a people's hero--the Highwayman.
This novel is, at its heart, an origin tale and Salvatore takes time to spin his hero's legend. Although the stirring set piece at the novel's launch will let readers know where he's going, discovering how he gets there is a thrill and a pleasure, making this one of Salvatore's most mature and deliberate novels. In the backdrop, fans of the Demon War Sagas will watch the emerging Abellican Church as it grows from virtual cult to the calcified institution of the later books. In all, this is a stimulating addition to the Corona universe. --Jeremy Pugh
Book Description
R.A. Salvatore takes his readers back to his signature world of Corona, where he introduces a fascinating new hero destined to become a fantasy legend.
It is God's year 54, many years before the Demon Wars, in the land of Corona. The roads are unsafe to travel, where goblins and bloodthirsty Powries search out human prey. In this savage world, Princes feast while peasants starve, and two religions struggle fiercely for control.
Bran Dynard, a monk of the fledgling religion of Abelle, returns from his mission in a far off land with prizes: a book of mystical knowledge, and a new wife, the beautiful and mysterious Sen Wi.
But the world he left behind has changed, and his dream of spreading the powerful wisdom he learned to his fellow monks is soon crushed. Forced to hide Sen Wi and his precious book, Bran must decide whom he can trust, and where he should now place his faith.
Twenty years later, the situation has grown darker and more desperate. The land is devastated by war, and even the rich and powerful live in fear. Only the masked Highwayman travels freely, his sword casting aside Powries and soldiers with equal ease. The people long for a savior, but is the Highwayman on a mission of mercy...or vengeance?

Initially disappointing.......2006-02-12
I've read many of R.A. Savlatore's books, and enjoyed most of them immensely, so when I saw this book I handed over my money without a thought. It started out promising, but then it morphed into a scene from "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" - the same ambushed coach, the same noble man and lady, her eyes gleaming with excitement... the dashing highwayman tells the lady "Surely a beauty as radiant as your own needs no baubles." (Granted, he takes her necklace as he says this, but THEN he returns to the "Robin Hood" script and he kisses her hand and takes the ring off of it.) Anyone else getting mental images of Kevin Costner here?
I was so disgusted with that bit of plagiarism that I put down the book and started a different one. I may or may not go back to it later.
Granted, I have not finished the book; it may well be a fantastic read, and deserving of a higher rating than 1 star. (I actually tried to send my comments without a rating since I haven't finished the book, but the site wouldn't let me.) But I would think that a man as talented as R.A. Salvatore would not need to stoop to stealing scenes from other bodies of work.
Yet another gem from Salvatore........2005-07-08
I'm a big fan of R.A. Salvatore. First I started out with the Crimson Shadow Series then I became entralled with tales of Drizzt and the rest of the Forgotten Realms crew. Finally I ended up diving right into his realm of Corona.
The main isn't the type who you'd think of as a hero. In fact, due to his physical infirmities early on, you'd think it would be altogether impossible for this man to be the dashing, rogue that the highwayman turns out to be.
I found myself sympathetic to the tale of Prince Prydae. Sure, he showed contempt for the common folk but that's to be expected in a realm based on serfdom. Later on he wasn't such a nice guy but I found myself wishing I could read more of the Prince and his hulking Champion.
I'd definately read another book based on the Highwayman. However, after all the stretching of the Forgotten realms tales from book to book, it was certainly nice to read a book by Mr. Salvatore that I felt had a nice, tidy finality to it.
A Fine new Character.......2005-03-10
I really enjoyed this book. It took me back to the early adventures of Drizzt and his posse. The characters rakish personality is cool, as is the fact that he's a smaller man. Some of the traits that the character gains are somewhat unbelievable, especially since he has no physical experience (being a martial artist I know how hard some of the moves can be) but other than that it was a good, fast read. I definitely recommend it.
At first it seemed formulaic.......2004-12-03
I mean we do start out with a Drizzt type fight, then go straight to a Cadderly/Danica style pair, and later we even meet a tall muscular Wulfgar clone.
Having said that the book is quite unique and the world, an early version of what becomes the demonwar sagas later, is reminiscent of irish fairy tales and bloody battles take place in a brutal early iron age society.
The overall tone of the book is dark, reminiscient of exile where Drizzt is traveling alone in the world above trying to find his way or the time when Wulfgar is caught by the demon lord.
But the characters are deep and memorable and the unlikely hero is unique and surprising. Dwarves in this work are like Fairy folk in irish fairy tales, hateful of humanity and mysteriously magical in their thirst for blood.
There's more far reaching elements too, when you look at the battle of religions, the oppression of peasants, the hatred for other cultures (even when they are actually more advanced).
I would urge to look past the formulaic elements to a unique and exciting work by one of our favorite authors.
Good , but not Rob's best.......2004-09-27
R.A Slavatore has written books worthy of a second read, this one however is not one of those. Good book, good characters, intersting twist with the asian inspired enlightenment, but just not enough to make it a great book worhty of a second read.

Blazin! This was one of the sexiest romance novels ever!.......2006-09-09
I loved this book. It was hot!. One of the sexiest books ever! My brother - who had always laughed at my choice of literature -read this book when he broke his leg and said "Now I understand why you like these books! Do you have another one?"
I once threw this book!.......2004-01-16
This novel illicited so much emotion from me that I actually threw it aross the room, deciding (in frustration) that I would never finish it!!! (This is the only book I have ever done that with- so you know it's good!) Two days later I found it- having not been able to get it out of my mind- and finished it in one sitting. I love this novel. I have read it many times, will read it many times, and have purchased it many times (because I've passed my copy on to friends). It is a beautiful story- realistic in that the characters are real; the herione is no simpering virgin in a corset, but she does have fragility. The hero is no gentleman, he is a rake, rugged, fearsome- but also sweet, sensitive and loving. *sigh* The two are worthy of each other, they match in wits and spirit. The story is not very real, but it is a wonderful tale of adventure, love, passion and vengence that takes place in many wonderful nooks- thunding, gothic mansions, hide-outs in the lush forest, the theatre..... it captures my heart and imagination every time I read it!!! I would love to see a movie from this novel- I once imagined Catherine Zeta Jones in the heroine role. Ms. O'Neal is very talented and I am a loyal and avid fan.
Kathy does it again.......2000-02-27
Katherine O'Neal is a great writer, and this book shows that again. With steamy love scenes, a great and mostly believable plot, it's a great book. By the time you're done, you hate Christina's parents and the Prince Albert, feel for Christina, and fall in love with the Highwayman. And no, I'm not just saying that cause the author's my cousin!

Book Description
Melanie Jones thought she was imagining things. Surely there's not a breathtaking man astride a magnificent black horse racing her sports car on a country road. And he has the nerve to wink at her, just before he vanishes into the night! When he appears to her in solid, sinewy muscle, Melanie realizes he's real . . . and irresistible.
Nearly two centuries ago, Nathaniel Raven was betrayed and murdered by a trusted friend. He now has one opportunity to uncover the secrets of that night, and Melanie is the only woman who can help him. She may be the most infuriating and independent woman he's ever known, but there is no denying the burning passion between them . . . or the lethal danger that has followed him from the past . . .
Customer Reviews:
Book #2 of the Immortal Warrior Series.......2007-08-15
This was Melanie and Nathaniel Raven's story.
This was such a nice book to read. Well written and very entertaining. Can't wait for the next in this series!
WONDERFUL ADVENTURE.......2007-06-15
I picked up this book yesterday because I liked PASSIONS OF THE GHOST so well, and yes, this one is just as good or even better. The paranormal aspect is wonderful and the romance is lovely. I liked the historical part and very much enjoyed the swirling circumstances. Lots of action, romance, and adventure.
Melanie Jones is a lawyer who is sent to get an old castle and grounds ready for sale. The owner has passed and left everything to charity. She is very stoic and has worked her whole life to still the voices she has heard in her mind.
Nathaniel Raven once owned the estate, but he was shot while holding up a carriage as a highwayman. The circumstances surrounding his death are very sketchy and only his tombstone attests to his life and death.
Because of the injustice of his death he is granted a second chance by the Sorceress of the between-worlds. Not just for him but she also has an interest in the matter. He only has a short time to find out what really happened to him and set the facts of his life straight.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was fast paced, exciting, and different. Very much worth the time and money.
Secrets of the Highwayman .......2007-06-02
I absolutely love this author's books! It really works for me how she mingles a contemporary character with someone from the historical past. Usually Scotland or England, which I like. I end up rooting for the lovers to be together in the end.
secrets of the highwayman.......2007-05-12
now that i have the whole set, this book made everything perfect.

Love all three of her 'Immortal Warrior' novels. Sara's style of writing keeps you interested from page one to the very end of the book. You will enjoy all three: Return of the Highlander, Secrets of the Highwayman, and Passions of the Ghost......Can't wait for warrior # 4....

Book Description
"Gary Monroe has captured the essence of the Highwaymen's spirit through his insightful and endearing portrait of the group's finest painter."--Allison McCarthy, executive director, LeMoyne Art Foundation
Harold Newton was an unrecognized vagabond artist who not only captured the beauty of the Florida landscape but transformed it with an artistry that invoked its drama of light, color, and form while hinting at its dark, primordial forces. One of his fellow Highwaymen once observed of his work, "It don't have to be signed to know it's a Newton." Combining samples of his paintings with biographical details and reminiscences of family members, customers, and fellow Highwaymen, Gary Monroe creates an homage to the man whose work contributed perhaps more than anyone else's to shaping the romantic imagery and identity of modern Florida.
An enigmatic figure, Newton lived an artist's life--aloof and prolific while painting, gregarious and expansive when socializing. Taking to the streets to sell his paintings in 1954, he sold untold numbers of works, showering the state with them. There are "Newtons" everywhere--especially along Florida's east central coast, the Highwaymen's backyard. Their art is in Miami and the Palm Beaches, Tallahassee and across the Panhandle, Lake City and scattered throughout the interior, and along the west coast as well, in Naples, Sarasota, Tampa, and St. Petersburg--wherever there were homes and offices. More of Newton's paintings remain today than those of any of the other highwaymen. Monroe explains these images' enduring appeal while providing glimpses of the African American artist's life from which they emerged, from a childhood spent moving between Florida and south Georgia, to a pivotal encounter with Bean Backus, to his sojourns at Eddie's Place, to the repossession of his 1959 Ford sedan decorated with beach, ocean, palm trees, and nude girls, to the quiet accumulation of professional patrons eager to purchase another two or three "Newtons" at every available opportunity.
Newton is central to understanding the style of landscape painting that emerged from the Indian River area at mid-century, and Monroe creates an attractive, engaging, and informative account of this pivotal artist and his impact on the popular image of Florida.

Additional History and Art of The Florida Highwaymen, in Depth of Harold Newton.......2007-06-09
Gary Monroe has given us a brief history of Harold Newton in his most recent book of 26 pages of text and 5 photographs and 62 high quality plates. The book is similar in size and format to his previous work: The Highwaymen, Florida's African-American Landscape Painters, 2001, also published by the University Press of Florida. Though claiming his first love is photography, the easily read history compiled through personal interviews with the subject's friends, including other artists, belies his deep appreciation for this segment of Floridian history. He allows us a glimpse into the life, loves and very character of Harold Newton. The paintings reveal that facet of the artist as well. Gary Monroe has done us a real service in telling the story and selecting some of the artist's works to treasure.

When Artemis Rothwell travels to London for her coming out, notorious highwaymen rob her of a precious ring. But one thief kisses Artemis-whispering that he'll restore it. Now Artemis longs for her masked man to fulfill his promise...
Customer Reviews:
A Better read than you Expect.......2004-11-19
When I read the back cover for details on this read I thought "I like the highwayman theme and i'll give it a whirl." well, when you sit down and read this book you DO get a whirl.
Artemis and Cherrington are likely the most unique beause they're from a different cut our normal heros and heroines are from. I really enjoyed them and thought this a better read than Mindel's own "The Captain's Secret".
The slight downfall to the read was it was ever so slightly predictable, but it doesn't constitute the lack of a star.
Chemistry, anyone?.......2004-04-06
"Kiss of the Highwayman" is every bit as delicious as the title promises, superbly crafted to bring the dangers and social restraints of the Regency era to life. The unforgettable hero, Lord Cherrington, is a riotous combination of James Bond by night and Lawrence of Arabia by day, while Artemis Rothwell, our delightfully self-conscious heroine, is an athlete of Olympic proportions in an age of feminine gentility. The intriguing character development lends depth and believability to an already exciting plot. The author clearly knows and loves her characters, and before long, so do we.
Entertaining.......2004-03-24
Artemis Rothwell is traveling to London for the Season. While on the road, she reflects on recent rumors: Highwaymen have been plundering carriages along the way, stealing kisses and riches from their lady victims. Lo and behold, the very same thing happens to Artemis and her step-mother. A masked Romeo steals a kiss... along with the Rothwell ring. Artemis is determined to get it back.
Artemis' "Romeo" is none other than Brian, Lord Cherrington, who has infiltrated the group of "gentleman" highwaymen in order to get revenge for his brother's death. When he meets Artemis in town, he instantly recognizes her as the woman of Amazon-stature whose carriage he recently robbed. In London, Cherrington parades around like a foppish dandy--the very sort of guy that Artemis wants to avoid. ...But there's more to "Cherry" than she thinks. Much more.
I really enjoyed this book. Unlike most books, something was always happening. It was interesting. It was often exciting. I just had to laugh when Lord Cherrington kept insisting that she call him "Cherry." And Artemis was a refreshing heroine--tall, brave... she was a girl who could take care of herself. Jenna Mindel brings an interesting new plot to the table. Unfortunately, it did seem a bit unrealistic at times (i.e. Artemis' aptitude w/swords, and some scandalous actions from both characters). Overall, though, I enjoyed it very much.
Before you read, you might want to check out Jenna Mindel's last book, "Miranda's Mistake", in which Artemis is a central character. I was really hoping she would get her own story. I'm glad she did. (Now, I can only hope for Clasby...)
a truly enjoyable and satisfying read.......2004-03-11
A follow-up to "Miranda's Mistake," The Kiss of the Highwayman" proved to be an entertaining and vastly romantic read -- the kind of book that leaves you with a smile on your face long after you've finished reading it, even if in order to fully appreciate this novel you may have to have read (and remembered) certain plot developments from "Miranda's Mistake."
With the recent and accidental death of his elder brother, Brian Warren, has become the new Lord Cherrington, the Earl of Cherring. But even though he should be spending time putting the affairs of the family estate back in order, Brian is determined to bring a group of 'gentlemen' highwaymen to justice because he holds these men responsible for his brother's untimely death. Through sheer patience and perseverance, Brian manages to infiltrate the gang, and feels that he is making some small headway into discovering the identity of all the members of the gang, when the highwaymen hold up the carriage of Lady Rothwell and her stepdaughter, Artemis.
Lady Rothwell and Artemis are on their way to London for Artemis's London debut. And for safety's sake, have left all their money and jewelry at home; but the one thing they overlooked leaving behind was the Rothwell betrothal ring, the very item that the leader of the 'gentlemen' highwaymen tries to seize. But not before Artemis makes a brave stand that earns her both Brian's respect and esteem. Before he knows it, he has kissed the courageous young lady ardently and rashly whispered to her that the ring will be returned. Can Brian fulfill his promise to Artemis? And will he be able to maintain his charade, esp once the festivities of the London season are in full swing, and he meets the one young lady who has both piqued his interest and his heart...
Without fully going into plot spoilers, all I will say is that the "Kiss of a Highwaymen" was a thoroughly enjoyable read not only because of its interesting storyline but also because the authour makes the hero and heroine fall in love with each other not so much because of their physical attributes, but because of their character traits. This really made me believe that Artemis's and Brian's love was true and was one that would last forever. Brian was a wonderfully charming hero; while even though Artemis was molded along the lines of a more feisty minded heroine, she was NOT (thank goodness) one of those annoyingly silly, idiotic ones, and was actually intelligent and courageous. You could see why these two characters were meant for each other. The pacing of events was swift, and the character development for the most part was rather well done. In only one area did I feel shortchanged, and that was with the villain of the piece. I got the feeling that a lot of the villain's character and motives may have been better explained in "Miranda's Mistake;" and while I had read that novel, I don't really recollect this particular character all that well. I do think that the authour should have spent a little more time explaining this particular's character's motivation. But that may be because I'm a mystery buff and need for every knot to be untangled fully. All in all, however, "Kiss of the Highwayman" was a tremendously fun read that most readers should find to be immensely satisfying.

Book Description
Alfred Noyes's famous poem still has the power to thrill us as we read the story of the highwayman and his doomed love for Bess, the landlord's black-eyed daughter. This classic story of sacrifice in the name of true love has been a favorite with generations of young readers. The powerful,
evocative language of Alfred Noyes's verses echoes through the centuries, complemented by Charles Keeping's dazzling illustrations which won this book the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1982.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Picture Book? YES! For Young Kids? NO! .......2007-06-12
This is an example of a picture book that is great to use in middle schools and high schools but the subject matter is not at all suitable for those under fifth grade. Like many I first read the poem in my seventh grade literature textbook and remember being thrilled and a little shocked. For anyone not familiar with the story it involves tragic romance, graphic death and ghostly return of spirits. The dark illustrations do an excellent job of reinforcing the melancholy mood. I hope this poem continues to be enjoyed by new readers but not until they reach age eleven.
A Thrilling and Moving Single Poem Picture Book.......2006-05-08
Noyes' famous poem, first published in 1913, tells the love story of a notorious highway robber and Rose, the beautiful daughter of an innkeeper. The time is before or during the American Revolution. The highwayman promises to come for Rose "by moonlight" after his next big robbery, but neither one knows that the half-witted stable man Tim is eavesdropping. Tim, hopelessly in love with Rose himself, betrays her to the British soldiers-"King George's men"-and they use Rose as bait to catch their quarry. They tie a musket to Rose and stand her at her window, but she works a finger just loose enough to touch the trigger of the gun. As her lover approaches on horseback, she pulls the trigger to warn him off, but sacrifices herself in doing so. When the highwayman hears of Rose's death the following morning, he commits what we would today call "suicide by cop": he charges into town brandishing his rapier and is shot "down like a dog on the highway."
Keeping's monochromatic illustrations are extremely evocative. The waves of Rose's hair are echoed in the ripples of the horse's tail and mane, the highwayman's own dark waves, and the grains of wood framing the casement window where Rose meets her lover. Through subtle shading, Keeping manages to depict "the dawning," noon, and "the tawny sunset" as seen from the window. The faces of the British soldiers are spotted and unpleasant, and the portrait of "Tim the ostler" is a study in madness and hideous jealousy. The most horrific scenes, though, are the ones that feature blood: blood and sweat pouring from Rose's arm as she struggles against her bonds to find the trigger; her death, tied upright to the bedpost, blood staining her white dress; and the death of the highwayman, lying "in his blood on the highway." Keeping's use of spatters and runs is particularly effective, and the illustrations are surprisingly gory in spite of their lack of color. After the lovers die, Keeping repeats early illustrations from the story as photographic negatives, giving the highwayman and Rose a ghostly effect in keeping with the poem. The spectral images are quite eerie indeed.

This book is actually a famous poem by the prolific poet Alfred Noyes. This particular poem is about the love between an American soldier and his bride-to-be in the Revolutionary era of the 1770's. It is a graphic and sad tale of the sacrifices that people will make for true love. The central theme of the story is the British soldiers taking hostage the love of the "Highwayman." The soldiers use her as bait to draw him out so that he could be murdered. Instead of submitting herself to this mission, though, she gives up her life by shooting herself with a gun, just in time to warn her love of the danger that he was being drawn to. The rest of the story deals with the decision between protecting the life that his love sacrificed for and honoring the life of the lover that he has lost.
The illustrations utilize dark colors, shadows, and details (and lack thereof) to bring the mood of the poem to life. The words themselves also do a great job of creating the atmosphere of a tragic love affair that is destined for an unhappy ending.
While this book is a "picture" book, the themes of death, suicide, and murder prove too much for a younger audience. This poem is typically one that it is read by High School and College students, not by young readers. The poem is difficult to understand if just read casually, as it must be considered and pondered about in great detail. I would recommend it to readers who are mature enough to handle the themes of this
Not for young children.......2004-11-07
Please disregard Publisher's Weekly that this is a book for children 4-8 and that the pictures of the suicide/murder at the end are "not graphic". Did the person writing the review take their cue from Roger Ebert who likes anything violent? I love this poem, but as a K-8 teacher I can safely say that this book is NOT for children under the age of 10 at least.
My favourite Poem.......2004-06-08
This poem never fails to thrill me - my mother used to read is to us as kids and I did it as the poem in my matric final.
I am now a grandmother and shall read it to my grandchildren and hope that they enjoy it as much as I did, although I doubt that they shall know what a highwayman is !!
It is a classic that will never die .

A well-written and enjoyable book!.......2001-04-19
Celebrated writer Lady Sherris Childe is perhaps the only female in England eager for the execution of the highwayman, the notorious Captain Toby. The event will surely inspire her next novel, especially when Captain Toby escapes, having forced Sherry at gunpoint to help him! The ensuing escapades rival one of Sherry's plots. That is, until Sherry begins to fall in love with a man she is sure she can never have....
The book captures your attention from the first page and doesn't let go until the last. The characters are
