    UPDATE: 2nd printing now available.

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old holistic healing tradition from India whose history is linked to the development of yoga, in which physical and spiritual well-being comes from a number of sources, including a healthful diet based on one's individual constitution. Today, it has a growing constituency, including well-known practitioner Dr Deepak Chopra.

Ayurveda is about achieving a physical and spiritual balance through a number of means, including diet. This all-vegetarian cookbook based on Ayurvedic traditions features delectable and nutritious recipes that appeal to particular doshas, which are one's personal constitution based on physical and mental characteristics: air (vata), fire (pitta), and earth (kapha) (the book includes a dosha questionnaire so readers can determine their own). And while the recipes are authentically Ayurvedic, they feature easy-to-find ingredients and modern-day cooking methods appropriate for busy lifestyles.

Recipes are divided into Breakfasts, Appetizers, Salads, Soups, Entrees, Grains & Breads, Sweets & Desserts, and Condiments. The book also includes yoga postures (with photographs), cleansing programs, and information on aromatherapy, colour therapy, and menu plans. There also are suggested meat substitutions for non-vegetarians (Ayurveda is not exclusively vegetarian, although this book is).

Written with both converts and beginners in mind, The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook is a twenty-first-century approach to an ancient tradition that will restore your health, energy, and sense of well-being.

Partial proceeds from the sale of this book will go to support the Pamoja Foundation, www.pamoja.org.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Recipes.......2007-08-29

This is, in my estimation, a good Ayurvedic cookbook. It has many authentic and adapted recipes. Ms Sondhi presents in a comfortable and familiar style. There are times that she steps outside Ayurvedic guidelines. But when she does, she first makes sure that the reader knows what the guidelins are - THEN she steps out. Very candid and has produced an enjoyable book.
The first section gives a nice overview of Ayurvedic facts. It is not in depth. She does not presume to teach the reader who is new to Ayurveda. Instead she gives guidelines, fills the Appendix with many directions to follow, AND focuses on great recipes.
I feel that there are very few good Ayurvedic cookbooks that are available to the Western market. Most have visions of being the Complete Guide to Ayurveda. Most don't succeed. I think Ms Sondhi did succeed in her endeavor - this is a good one.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of Food, Little on Healing.......2007-05-19

I purchased this book anticipating condition specific recipes, however, the coverage of the doshas and the problems caused by imbalance is superficial at best. The recipes provide a tasty introduction to mostly Indian style vegetarian food. Many are labor intensive and quite heavy on the carbs and a number involve frying. A few require exotic ingredients that may not be easily accessible outside of urban areas. No nutritional information is provided.

The book is readable and the author has a pleasant, conversational style. The recipes I've tried have all been satisfactory, including the vegetable dishes, dals, pickles, lassis and rice puddings. The book is not limited to Indian cooking-there are also recipes for a fat free muesli, gazpacho and a refreshing fruit soup. There are suggested menus that are a bit starchy for my tastes and a cleansing/fasting program. Cursory chapters on yoga and aromatherapy are presented but without real depth. There is nothing on herbal supplementation and skimpy instructions on implementing the cleansing program. If your primary focus is on healing, you would be better served by offerings by Letha Haddady or Barbara Proust. If you are looking for tasty ways to include more vegetables in your diet, you will be satisfied by this book.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2007-01-07

I came across this cookbook at the library, flipped through it, and instantly knew I needed to own this book!! I've only tried a couple of recipes, but can't wait to try more! (Definately try the Carrot Halva on p. 241, spiced with cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon - and I also love the Spicy Almond Milk (p.273) with a unique blend of anise, pepper, and ginger - delicious!) Other recipes of interest include whole-wheat chapatis, paneer samosas (paneer is an Indian cottage cheese), and blackberry oat bars...! Amrita Sondhi explains how foods and spices can balance your dosha/constitution and includes a few menu plans, cleanses, and several yoga postures.
If you like cooking authentic Indian dishes with wonderful spices, you'll truly enjoy this book (and so will your tastebuds!)

"Blood ties seemed unrelated to how we were living," Sakumi, the young narrator of Amrita, begins portentously. The "we" of the family comprises a strange blend--Sakumi's mother, twice married (widowed and divorced); a telepathic younger brother; a cousin; and her mother's childhood friend. Grief over the tragic death of Mayu, Sakumi's flamboyant younger sister, binds them together. But grief is not the only obstacle to happiness and wholeness for Sakumi, who loses her memory in a fall. Grief shocked into awareness by memories retrieved--such is the thread that allows Sakumi to piece together her own identity and press toward acceptance of her sister's death.

Banana Yoshimoto's first novel, Kitchen (1991), traversed the territory of love and loss. Its fabulous success in Japan and the U.S. had to do with her distinct sensibility, a contemporary voice arising from a tradition-conscious culture. Amrita also ventures through the minefield of familial loss, but with a style less driven by the bizarre interface of tradition and pop culture.

    Book Description

After losing her beautiful younger sister, a celebrated actress, to suicide, Sakumi falls down a flight of stairs and loses her memory to a head injury. Struggling to remember whom she loves and what she lost, she embarks on a unique emotional journey, accompanied at times by her dead sister's lover, at others by her clairvoyant kid brother. This is the story of Sakumi's remarkable expedition through grief, dreams, and shadows to a place of transformation and the discovery of a soul.

Banana Yoshimoto keeps on playing with the visible and the hidden, the reality and surreal and this is one of her finest Banana-wonder-stories, go for it quickly!

4 out of 5 stars An irresistable author.......2005-07-24

At times utterly unbelievable, I couldn't help but be captivated by the simplicity and strength of her writing. No matter how convoluted the plot becomes, Yoshimoto's story telling soothes me to the marrow.

    3 out of 5 stars Ho-Hum.......2004-05-11

I tried my best to lose myself in this book but I just couldn't. It didn't captivate me as much as the other book by this author did. Perhaps it was a result of the long and stressful work week that hindered my reading of this book. I don't know. I think sometime in the future I'll have to give this book a second go.

    5 out of 5 stars You're beautiful Sakumi!.......2002-06-20

After I read Banana Yoshimoto's first novella Kitchen during the summer of 2001, I picked up each of her then available works in translation and devoured them voraciously. Unfortunately not one of her other novels, short stories, and novellas ever had that same gentle, dreamlike impact of Kitchen. I am not saying that I did not enjoy these other works, but as a whole they could never draw me into her fictional world with the same force and they lacked the same dreamlike quality that I found in her first thin tome that she penned in her early twenties. I found N.P. to be a bit forced and the short story collection Lizard to be a bit stale although there were a couple of true gems amongst the chunks of glass. Then there is her longest and possibly most convoluted novel Amrita which I have now read for the third time and for the first time in almost five years.

Penned in 1994 when Yoshimoto was thirty years old, Amrita centers on the female protagonist Sakumi. Sakumi is quite similar to the ordinary Yoshimoto protagonist: mid-twenties, pretty but not beautiful, and from an affluent albeit broken family. She spends a number of her days doing what a number of young women from similar backgrounds do: she shops at expensive boutiques, hangs out with her friends, and has long, leisurely dates with her boyfriend. However, there is one key element to Sakumi that differentiates her from her contemporaries: one day she split her head open when she fell on some steep steps which caused her mind to become a clean slate.

Working at a small bar called Berries and living with her "odd" family that consists of her mother, her cousin, her mother's best friend, and her little brother, Sakumi spends her days similar to the way that she did before, but with the added addition of suddenly recalling memories that remained deeply submerged in her unconsciousness. Many of these memories concern her dead sister Mayu, once a famous actress, who died years before in an accident related to alcohol and drug use. Beautiful and liked by everyone, the memory of Mayu hangs over Sakumi's family and the mind of Mayu's boyfriend Ryuichiro, a writer who after Mayu's death has become a globetrotter. With this deep shadow over her life, Sakumi spends the duration of the novels 366 pages trying to rediscover herself and helping her younger brother come to terms with his supernatural powers.

Amrita is definitely a convoluted work and the only glue that holds it together is the protagonist Sakumi, however, this does not mean that the book is just a rambling mess. With clean slate for a mind, Sakumi definitely has an interesting outlook towards life. She sees her family members in a completely new light and learns slowly bit by bit what makes each person important to her and how each person is a piece of the puzzle which is her memory. Like almost every other Yoshimoto novel, Amrita is tinged with melancholy and it can make the reader reflect on his or her own personal relations with family members and lovers and how his or her concepts of a person is completely made up of thoughts and memories and how truly tenuous these thoughts and memories are.

A good book overall, I believe that Amrita would be a good book to read for those who are familiar with some readers who are familiar with Yoshimoto's shorter pieces, but for a Yoshimoto novice, Kitchen would be a better starting point.

4 out of 5 stars Amrita - The Water of God.......2001-10-18

Banana Yoshimoto is an excellent storyteller. I can say she's my favorite author. I'm writing a review for a book report, and Banana's style of writing is not new to me, because I've read many other books of hers. This book in particular has amazed me because of the whole idea of the book. Banana has a rather out of the ordinary imagination, but at the same time, very meaningful and passionate. It's extraordinary how Banana describes Sakumi's (the narrator's) feelings about her younger sister's death and how she lost her memory when she smashed her head falling down the stairs. Banana centers her main idea and starting point of her books on atleast one death that bring the characters in the story to show their feelings about it and come together in a unison. Like in Amrita, Sakumi has suffered from the loss of her younger sister, Mayu, in a car accident, and when she lost her memory, she realized how her sister was important to her and what her sister truly meant for her. Sakumi afterwards falls in love with Ryuichiro, Mayu's lover. Ryuichiro is a cult writer and goes around the world in search for new ideas and materials to write his next novel. At one point in the story, he asked Sakumi to go with him to the island of Saipan to meet some very special friends of his. Sakumi falls in love for the gorgeous landscape of the ocean. Yoshio, Sakumi's younger brother, came over to Saipan also, after some problems with school. Sakumi was worried about him because he was developing super-natural powers and couldn't get along with other kids in regular school, so she invited him to enjoy the beautiful landscape along with her. Banana describes her characters and places like a lyric poem, with a fine mixture of adjectives. This talent has struck me deeply and I could picture Saipan in my mind. Banana also chooses some very interesting titles for her book. The word Amrita comes the old Sanskrit word "amrta", and it is a divine nectar, something the gods indulged. When they drank this liquid, they actually achieved life. Throughout the book, the reader will surely understand why. This is a brilliant and capturing book and I loved it. I leave it to you now to reveal the secret.

    Book Description

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is scarcely ten years old, but even in these early years of its existence it has generated debate, controversy and even outrage. Rulings on beef hormones and tuna-dolphin cases provide graphic examples of how the organization regulates and intrudes into areas of individual consumer choice, ethical preferences, and cultural habits. This deep and far-ranging impact of the WTO on peoples' everyday lives means that it is not just an institution of interest to economists, but to everyone, a fact that was perhaps most graphically illustrated in the popular demonstrations at the 1999 Seattle Ministerial. Such protests have become a regular feature associated with most high-level meetings of the WTO. This VSI will provide a timely and carefully considered explanation of what the WTO is, what it does, and how it goes about executing its tasks. A clear understanding of the mandate, structure and functioning of the WTO is essential to appreciate the controversy behind the organization, and how far it deserves the reputation that it has come to acquire.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Concise distillation of a messy topic -- great value.......2007-05-31

This book describes the historical background and current controversies surrounding the WTO in a way that's both concise and surprisingly interesting. The history is necessary for a couple of reasons. First, many of the procedures used in the WTO today, as well as some of its documentation, are holdovers from the WTO's predecessor treaty, the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade). Second, many of the current controversies about the WTO have their roots in the North-South divide that became apparent during the GATT era, which lasted just short of 50 years (compared to WTO's life-span of a bit more than 10 so far).

The author goes out of her way to present the experiences and point of view of developing countries (DCs) on most issues. Since the vast majority of the WTO's signatories are DCs, and since most of the institutions of the WTO and GATT were under the control of the US and European nations, this is not so unreasonable or unbalanced. (Note that DC signatories aren't "opponents" of WTO or of globalization; they just want the organization to be fairer than it is currently.) Moreover, she makes it clear that the DCs aren't all angels, either. For example, WTO signatories are required to submit schedules of "bound" tariff rates -- i.e., they promise not to charge higher than the "bound" rate for the respective category of goods on the schedule. This goes to the heart of a main reason for creating WTO: DCs hadn't had to bind their tariffs under GATT. They were induced to do so under WTO by promises that WTO would address certain of their concerns on agriculture, textiles and other matters. However, the author points out even though some DCs were disgruntled that these promises were unkept, they were also gaming the system: most DCs "bound" their rates at much higher than what they were charging in practice. They thereby effectively assured themselves the right to charge significantly *higher* tariffs in the future -- which kinda wasn't what WTO was supposed to be about.

That the author can make such intricate details vivid and engaging is quite unusual for books about WTO (other than anti-globalization rants). And despite having less than 140 pages of text, the book will provide you with enough detail to allow you to penetrate some of the more scholarly tomes about WTO without falling asleep instantly, should you feel up to that challenge. Considering that the prices of such books are often $50-$100 or even much more, this book is a tremendous value.

4 out of 5 stars An informative read, but not too balanced.......2006-09-25

Of the three major international financial organisations, The World Bank, The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and The World Trade Organization (WTO), the last one is by far the youngest, yet it garners most headline news and controversy these days. In order to understand why, it is worthwhile to invest some time in reading about the origins of WTO in General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the organization that preceded it, as well as to understand how agreements are brokered and reached in WTO. This book provides a useful and informative introduction to WTO that answers those general questions fairly well. However, one gets a sense that the motivation behind the book was somewhat geared in direction of the critics of the WTO, rather than providing a more balanced account of the purposes and goals of the organization. In books defense it covers the origin and ramifications of the most recent controversial issues involving WTO fairly well, and it would be a useful and informative read for anyone interested in some basic facts about this organization.

    Book Description

This pathbreaking book provides for the first time an overview of the genesis, growth, gains, and dilemmas of women's movements worldwide. Unlike most of the literature, which focuses on the industrialized Western world, this volume devotes greater attention ot the postcolonial states of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The book challenges the assumptions that feminism can transcend national differences and, conversely, that women's movements are shaped and circumscribed by national levels of development. All the authors reject the notion, proposed by its detractors and champions alike, that feminism is Western inspired and of middle-class origins. Instead they seek to locate women's movements within the terrain from which they emerge. As a key book for the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, this volume will be essential reading for anyone interested in the global scope and implications of feminism.

4 out of 5 stars Responding to Women's Issues Around the World.......2001-04-12

I have taught this book once in a course entitled Global Feminism and will be teaching it again in the fall of 2001. Basu's work is well organized, with each chapter on a specific country headed by a box containing important statistics. However, this work is not theoretical, but rather offers a compendium of information (history, political overview, issues, women's organizations addressing those issues and their history)about many individual countries. Thus, it can be used in conjunction with a more theoretical work to gain a good sense of issues in particular cultures. It is also quite useful in gaining an overview of women's issues and movements around the world. Unlike some of the more theoretical works on transnational feminism, Basu's style is quite easy to read and make sense of. Students did not find it particularly absorbing but found it very helpful in completing team projects on feminist issues. The Challenge of Local Feminisms is a handbook rather than something to sink your teeth into intellectually, but it's clearly a very useful book to have on one's shelf.

      Book Description

This book examines the relationship between the extreme violence of riots, pogroms, acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing and the ordinary, everyday, often invisible structures and practices of violence in India. Usually, these exceptional, extreme moments of state-sponsored violence are treated as aberrations, quite separate from the everyday world of politics-as-usual, particularly when the norm in question is that of liberal democracy. In contrast, the contributors explore the ways in which democracy enables violence, and how violence in turn transforms the practices and pursuit of democracy.

        Book Description

A yoga instructor and mother of five shares a revelation: Childbirth doesn't have to be painful, stressful, or degrading. In this age of the epidural epidemic, when birth is treated as surgery or illness, "Choosing Waterbirth" details how to make childbirth a positive experience, both empowering and beautiful. Bertram, who chose the waterbirth method for each of her children, gently explains how this natural, harmonious, healthy, and low-pain birth method allows women to reclaim the dignity and sacredness that is the true essence of the birth experience.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-05-18

As we plan a home water birth this book was full of great stories and information. An easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Inspiring.......2007-02-20

As a first time mom, I really found this book to be a nice read that I really enjoyed. It was very readable and not clinical or hard to read like many other childbirth books. I identified with the author and appreciated her birthing stories. I felt like I understood where she was coming from and I really enjoyed the inclusion of photos. She touched on many topics, including breastfeeding and infant massage, but really focused well on the benefits and reasons to consider waterbirth. I found it inspiring and am very glad that I read it. I am recommending to my midwife.

2 out of 5 stars This book is not for everyone.......2006-10-13

After reading the great customer reviews and the description of the book, I was really looking forward to getting my hands on it. I soon saw that there's not much content (it only took a few hours for me to get through) and the place she comes from does not resonate with me. She sees the birth process as inherently painful; I do not. This made it difficult for me to get through the book because she mentions pain many times. That was not inspiring (or even simply nice to read to it) in the least. She also comes from the place of labor being inherently hard or difficult; I do not. I see it as an ecstatic, rewarding, and a possibly pleasurable experience.

I was hoping for more of an objective point of view, or, at the very least, a positive point of view about labor and birth. This book is basically about her own experiences. She does give the basics of waterbirth, of course, and why it's appealing. It isn't necessarily a means for pain relief if the woman isn't experiencing pain, though, which she doesn't mention at all. Her birth stories were filled with a lot of difficulty and pain, for the most part, and I finished the book trying to figure out what I learned. Not much; just a little bit about the basics of waterbirth.

The yoga chapter and baby massage chapter are awesome, and I can also see how this would be a great book for the average, mainstream mom. However, I wouldn't recommend it because with the small amount of content and the subjective point of view, I'm inclined to suggest that other people simply look up information online or spend their money elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars Good about waterbirth experience, only........2006-01-24

This book was a good source for me to know what the waterbith was. Bertram is not a doctor or science expert in this field, she is someone who gave birth 5 times and shared her experience. All that she mentions in the book should not be taken as granted. Like that it is not necessary to take the baby for check up as soon as it was born because "he won't change in an hour". Wrong. First of all, at the hospitals babies are placed on their mothers' chests for a while. There is an Apgar test, which should be done on the baby when she is one minute old and then again in 5 minutes to check on any warnings and prevent further complications with child's health. Bertram also discourages women from pain relief medication, claiming it results in forceps and vacuum. Wrong again, if a mother can't stand the pain, she is not able to concentrate on pushing. Forceps and vacuum is dangerous but mother can insist on not using them.
Read this book if you want to experience the waterbith, which is a very soothing method of childbirth and can be done either at home or at the hospital. However, do not take all of the book's statements for granted - a specialist did not write it.

4 out of 5 stars Great for 1st time mom........2003-09-13

This book supports women who are looking to give birth to and parent their baby au naturale.

Choosing Waterbirth did so much to prepare me psychologically for the road ahead, as a first-time mom planning for a non-medicated waterbirth. I read so many books that attempted to enlighten me as to what to expect from natural birth, and how to prepare for it psychologically, but could never quite 'get it'. Well this one took the cake. The author described the process in such a way that I felt like I was there going through it myself. Because she described first-person her five stories of waterbirths, she was able to take it on a very deep and personal level, which allowed me to imagine that I was her as I was reading her story. I could never get a clear picture of what to expect when reading other natural birth/ water birth books, but this novel format finally gave me the understanding I wanted. In the end, I was able to feel this woman's strength as she pushed through the pain, which gave me courage rather than fear of the pain in my own birth experience. This book also thoroughly covers the 3 stages of birth, described in a way that I could get a good understanding of without having ever gone through the process myself.

There's also an extensive chapter on prenatal yoga, with easy-to-follow pictures to learn the excercises, and guidance on relaxation and breathing techniques. She also tells you how to 'set the mood' for the occasion; how to choose and dress up the environment for maximum comfort.

The books ends with post-partum help: supportive information on breastfeeding, infant massage, and co-sleeping with your baby.

The information was obviously intended more for the birthing mother rather than the midwife/birth assistant. It covers many details and specifics that are important to the mother...attaining a tub (not building your own), finding a waterbirth center, who should & shouldn't consider waterbirth, and several resources to look into to 'make it happen'.

I thought this book complemented Water Birth by Napierala very well.

This is such a wonderful book, even for those of us who are just beginning to grasp jyotish. Mr. Cole's writing is so clear! It has really helped me to understand so much more. He writes in a really precise and relatable way, rich with insight. A Fantastic Discovery!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for all Vedic Astrologers.......2007-04-23

"Science of Light" by Freedom Cole is an excellent new book based on "Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra," perhaps the most important classical Jyotish text in existence.

Mr. Cole's new tome is a kind of translation of Parashara and yet, it is much more. I find that I cannot put it down since it crossed my desk about a week ago. The book is much clearer than Parashara itself. Mr. Cole's writing style is lucid, interesting and deeply insightful.

Every serious student of the Divine Science should have this book in a prominent position in his Jyotish library. This book is, in my opinion, the best volume on Vedic Astrology published so far in the 21st century. Every time I look at it, I find something new, profound, and thought provoking and I have been swimming in these Jyotish waters for 21 years now. THIS IS A MUST BUY BOOK!

The author is learned in Sanskrit and Ayurveda as well as astrology itself. He divides his time between the United States and India.
