Book Description

Apocalypse is D. H. Lawrence‘s last book, written during the winter of 1929–30 when he was dying. It is a radical criticism of our civilisation and a statement of Lawrence’s unwavering belief in man’s power to create ‘a new heaven and a new earth’. Ranging over the entire system of his thought on God and man, on religion, art, psychology and politics, this book is Lawrence’s final attempt to convey his vision of man and the universe. Apocalypse was published after Lawrence’s death, and in a highly inaccurate text. This edition is the first to reproduce accurately Lawrence’s final corrected text on the basis of a thorough examination of the surviving manuscript and typescript. In the introduction the editor has discussed the writing of Apocalypse and its place in Lawrence’s works, its publication and reception, and the significance of Lawrence’s other writings on the Book of Revelation.

3 out of 5 stars An occasional beautiful passage in a generally sterile and fanatic polemic .......2006-06-04

The greatness of Lawrence as a writer is not in question. But in this final work of his , we see a 'visionary ' side which involves a neo- Neitzschean and almost Fascist reading of ' the Book of Revelations'. Lawrence may as other reviewers claim be here most interested in defying a pagan life- affirming tradition against a spiritually dehumanizing Christianity. But the main thrust is in his condemnation, a very strange one indeed, of the poor of the world for their envy of those higher people, the true aristocrats of life. Borrowing a page from Nietzsche's conception of re-sentiment morality he condemns the poor and sees their anger as barren and empty. So too his reading of John of Patmos condemns him for dessicating the life in a false and distorted spiritual vision.
Lawrence's work comes most alive far from theory, in his novels especially but also in his poems.
In terms of pure ideas his contribution , at least in this work, is more negative than anything else.

4 out of 5 stars D.H. Lawrence's revelation.......2000-03-09

Written in response to widespread condemnation of the sexuality and libertine lifestyles presented in his books, Apocalypse was the final attempt by D. H. Lawrence to make himself understood. The modern reader will probably detect a full throttle blitz against the puritanical deacons of the Church of England and his establishment tormentors. Launched from the most contentious and abstruse of the Bible's books, Revelations, Lawrence levels his antipathy at a rigid, superficially moral, life denying exposition of Christian thought. He argues that the confining nature of living the 'good' life in expectation of reward in Heaven cuts to the root of an immensely rich potential for experience and passion presented in the world. He continuously falls back on opaque codices-- of arcane civilizations that he states more fully explored the metaphysical realm. Lawrence divines a heroic age where apparent creation and destiny were seen as integral and complete. Robert Graves's 'The White Goddess' comprehensively analyzes the same mythological, magical architecture, but Lawrence uses it in a much more targeted and critical way.

Lawrence saw the aesthetic brilliance of Revelations as a bridge to a more mysterious, immediate, compelling theology. At the same time he condemns the apocalyptic churches who interpret the book as the evocation of Hell and Judgement, rather than in its potent poetic symbolism. He goes so far as to accuse John of Patmos of not presenting a revelation at all, but of appropriating a truer, more ancient historiography for eccliastical and political reasons. Not above placing his own eccentric opinions of government in this tract, he could be accused of mounting his own pulpit, if with literary distinction. His claim of an affirming devotion to the visible universe as the only 'true' route to the holy can be countered by reading some of the lively writings of Christian ascetics. This treatise, however, is not about them. It is aimed squarely at the convention seeking, socially regulating, sanctimonious attitudes that had censored and prosecuted him. Not surprisingly it did not raise his stock much among his critics, but it is an essential text in understanding the underlying motives behind his works.

5 out of 5 stars Great Last Work and Testament.......2000-02-03

Attacks everything blindly and madly promoted by the dominant ideas of the dominant socio-economic classes and strongest institutionalized influences in the current civilization of inauthenticity and death.

The power of money must go, according to Lawrence, as the power of the sun must return--as it indeed has always been the power of life whether we recognize it or not. Also, the power of blood must be reasserted. As human beings we are connected to all things. However, this perspective is suppressed as it constitutes a threat to the status quo.

Lawrence here sees no salvation in either democracy or western monotheism; but solely in human beings connecting up once again to the universal forces of nature from which come life's vitality.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Lawrence "diversions-on-a-theme"........1999-06-28

Although Lawrence's writings are noted for more earthly activities, he shows a surprising knowledge of Biblical matters. In this book he analyzes the last book of the Bible-- Revelations-- and not too favorably at that. I cannot argue with his facts because I am not as familiar with them as as he is. What I find fascinating about this essay-book are his observations on democracy, and especially about life.

The last page or two contain one of his most remarkable and inspiring observations about the individual and his soul. Lawrence often argues that you cannot "save" you soul; you must "live" it. Near the end of this book he writes:

"What man most passionately want is his living wholeness and his living unison, not his own isolate salvation of his "soul." Man wants his physical fulfilment first and foremost, since now, once and once only, he is in the flesh and potent. For man, the vast marvel is to be alive. For man, as for flower and beast and bird, the supreme triumph is to be most vividly, most perfectly alive. Whatever the unborn and the dead may know, they cannot know the beauty, the marvel of being alive in the flesh. The dead may look after the afterwards. But the magnificent here and now of life in the flesh is ours, and ours alone, and ours only for a time. We ought to dance with rapture that we should be alive and in the flesh, and part of the living, incarnate cosmos....I am part of the great whole, and I can never escape. But I can deny my connections, break them, and become a fragment. Then I am wretched."

The most poignant phrase in this passage is "...and ours for a short time only." Lawrence lived a shorter time that most of us will, but in his lifetime his output was as perceptive and prodigious as any author who has ever written. Scattered throughout this book are irritating but illuminating thoughts like: "But a democracy is bound in the end to be obscene, for it is composed of myriad disunited fragments, each fragment assuming to itself a false wholeness, a false individuality. Modern democracy is made up of millions of frictional parts all asserting their own wholeness."

Some people have taken that statement as proof that Lawrence is against democracy. But I consider it a valid danger for democracy, one that is being played out in the press every day. To preserve democracy, the best of all possible forms of government, we have to analyze and try to correct its failings and weaknesses.

Puzzle your way through this book. I hope you will find it as rewarding as I did.

2 out of 5 stars Typical darkhorse.......2006-02-19

Go read the novel instead. The art will be better if you imagine it instead. As usual darkhorse has a bad track record when it comes to artists. As soon as i opened it, i knew i was in trouble. Why cant they get someone like Jim Lee?

5 out of 5 stars Mara Jade.......2005-12-30

Good stuff. It felt a little scattered, but getting so much story into a comic format can be difficult. The drawings were wonderful, and the characters portrayed really well. I would suggest it to anyone looking to figure out Mara's role in the Star Wars universe.

Highly suggested, just wish it had been longer.

4 out of 5 stars Zahn should be writing more TPB's after this..........2005-12-22

This was an excellent graphic novel by Timothy Zahn and Michael Stackpole. A great story about the Emperor's Hand, it begins right before the Second Death Star is destroyed and continues for weeks after it. Also, this TPB has about a five-page beginning that's not included in the comic version. By The Emperor's Hand shows more of the characters from other Star Wars novels, such as Ysanne Isard. It would have been nice, also, to see how and when Mara Jade meets up with Talon Karrde, but that's revealed in Star Wars: Tales from the Empire. Great art, dialogue, etc. A sequel would have been nice, but you can't have everything :)

5 out of 5 stars A rare comic that's a must purchase.......2003-10-15

Mara Jade: By the Emperor's Hand is one of those rare comics that has great art, smooth storyline, commendable dialogue and genuine depth. Co-authored by Stackpole and Zahn, two of Star Wars' more popular novelists known for quality output. The result here is another of their hits you expect when collaborative craniums work well.

The quality of art shines bright, considering the comic dates back to a period where quality and art are not what they are now. You can just tell efforts were made to add extra ice to this cream, the way the front credits were specially done. Characters and climates, scenery and locale, were all highly rendered and coloured well. This is definitely one of your more 3D-ish comics, and worth the purchase if just for that.

Dialogue is what you'd expect from usual Stackpole and Zahn efficiency: quick, creative and inventive. Mara's persona here, in her Imperial days, lends her a cool competence matched only by her slick lines. The support cast isn't left out, and while I haven't quite worked out who oversaw what issues, the authors are at their vintage best here.

What makes this comic stand out from the mediocre variety out there is its creativity and effort to give just a little more for readers. The sheer range of aliens is both amazing and appreciated, both the familiar denizens and all new ones just for a show here and there. Alien species ranged from the typical to exotic to comical. Mara's is never without a way of working, and the inventive methods of working past obstacles speak highly of the writers' imagination behind her.

The storyline itself is simple and enough: eliminate Black Nebula's crimelord, who fancies himself the heir of the recently toppled Black Sun criminal network. Having failed to kill Skywalker at Jabba's palace, this she does easily. Too easily; and when her Emperor master bites the dust, she resolves to finish the job.

Nice use of Isard and Pestage, and why Mara earns her wrath. Good to see a dark-skinned man, that Imperial tech. It's rather rare to get that in comics, when humans are predominantly fair skinned. Humour, of course, wasn't lacking. The bartender alien looked like that Dexter from AOTC, his voice easily imagined.

There were some faults to note, small but noticeable as they were. The facial likeness of Strok was given to other Imperial army officers, which can confuse readers at the end. The end page itself just sorted of finished . . . perhaps a bit too abruptly and not slow enough. Mara doesn't complete her mission till almost the last page.

Further more, she does an astonishing amount to self-thinking. Thought-bubbles were everywhere, which you will find common in books but sort of gave the bemused impression the lady sure speaks a lot to herself! Almost every panel had text in which, factored into the full 144 pages, slows down reading and makes for a long comic here.

While I had problems with Jabba "just" giving Mara a speeder to get away from him when she arouses his suspicions, overall, omitting this nifty slight of work is outright criminal, and with such high standards of excellence it's well worth your $$.

4 out of 5 stars YOU WILL MARRY LUKE SKYWALKER!!!.......2003-07-26

This is a review of Mara Jade ' By the Emperors Hand a comic TPB which collects 6 issues. ISBN 1569714010 published Sept 1999 and made in Canada.

Before the Emperor died he planted the thought in Mara: YOU WILL KILL LUKE SKYWALKER!! Now they marry.

This is a beautifully done comic given the technology available at the time, 1999. Visually the artwork took the time to draw the panels at a higher quality level than was usually done in the late 90's. Artwork gets 4 stars.

Inking and lay out is a step up from, but still has the newspaper comic strip appearance. The inking and color selections are subdued so I grade at 3.5 because it lacks the richness that Dark horse is capable of, but not displayed in this comic.

Story but Zahn and Stackpole oh my' Story is worth any quibbling about art and ink, though this is a comic as in a visual story. The story is 4.5 and pulls the overall grade up to 4 stars.

This is written almost as a companion to Zahn trilogy that revived the EU. We also see Mara in Jabba's fortress. The cover shows Mara with a Red light saber, but she wields a purple one throughout the book. Old Red eye ' blue eye Isard is in this story.

JediMack! Only 4 stars? This is arguably the best comic produced in its timeframe given the technology that existed in 1999. The binding is superior, which is good because this book has been re-read and seen some abuse and was made well enough to take it. I must reserve 5 star ratings for the best of the best, and in future years dark horse starts producing comic that are jaw dropping gorgeous with rich coloring and awesome penciling.

Book Description

“Wil Mara goes inside the NFL draft like never before. He details the personalities and complications that go into every draft decision, making for good reading and good drama.”
---John Clayton, NFL analyst and ESPN senior writer
It’s draft time in the National Football League. For high-ranking team executives, this means long days and sleepless nights, endless negotiations, and determining which young men deserve to become millionaires and which do not. Careers will be made with the stroke of a pen, but mistakes are costly.

Baltimore Ravens General Manager Jon Sabino has turned a weary, ragtag organization into a gridiron dynamo, culminating in two consecutive Super Bowl victories, and now they’re poised to make NFL history with a third consecutive championship. New talent is the last thing on Sabino’s mind, so this year’s draft will be little more than a formality.

Or will it?

With less than two weeks until draft day, Sabino receives crushing news---Michael Bell, the team’s starting quarterback, has been involved in a season-ending auto accident. Baltimore’s two backups cannot possibly fill Bell’s cleats, no other available free agents reach Bell’s skill level, and the Ravens’ volatile owner insists that he wants the third Lombardi Trophy above all else—even if it costs the team down the road.

So Sabino is forced to pursue Christian McKinley, the best quarterback prospect to come along in a generation, who will assuredly be taken with the first pick. But that’s a task easier said than done, especially when the other general managers will stop at nothing to keep him from winning yet another Super Bowl ring.

The San Diego Chargers, who own that pick, are not interested in McKinley but are willing to offer it to the highest bidder. Other teams want it; need it. Now Jon Sabino has to jump into the fray, which the media has dubbed the “McKinley Sweepstakes,” and he may find the competition tougher than even he can imagine. It could very well be the make-or-break moment of his career, the fork in the road that leads him and his team either into the history books or back to the tepid hell of mediocrity. And then there's a young man in the Philadelphia projects whose arm is just as good as McKinley's--except that he wants nothing to do with the NFL. He'll have to face an old family secret and bitter legacies if he ever goes pro. But he just might be the salvation Sabino needs.

NFL fans will delight in this insider’s entry into the general manager’s head office, sweat through draft negotiations, strategic alliances, and gamesmanship, and revel in pure NFL glory. The Draft is sports fiction at its best, combining solid insider information and an unmistakable passion for the game with the awesome power of storytelling; a potent mixture that will keep football fans riveted to every page.
“The Draft is an entertaining and realistic look inside the NFL. Any football fan will find it ‘must’ reading.’
---Bill Polian, president of the Indianapolis Colts
“Wil Mara’s foray into the sometimes unfriendly confines of the NFL draft room provides an intriguing insight into a process that can be as competitive as those that occur on the gridiron itself.”
---Marv Levy, Hall of Fame head coach and general manager of the Buffalo Bills
“The Draft is a fascinating novel about what can go on behind the scenes in an NFL front office—the intrigue and maneuvering. It is terrific reading for the fan who wonders how these trades and deals are made.”
---Ernie Accorsi, general manager of the New York Giants

“The Draft is a smartly crafted and highly engrossing novel about deals, decisions, and desperation in the world of pro football. The characters are marvelously drawn, and the writing is razor’s-edge sharp. If you are a fan of this game, then The Draft is one book you absolutely must read.”
---Peter Golenbock, author of Landry’s Boys

“There couldn't be a better time for a book like Wil Mara’s The Draft. It gives fans a glimpse into parts of the NFL that they wouldn't see otherwise. I was very impressed by Wil’s attention to detail, and by the great storyline he created. As a former player, I can honestly say he really nailed it. The emotion, the excitement, the suspense—everything is right here. I was amazed.”
---Jon Harris, defensive end and first-round draft pick of the Phildelphia Eagles, 1997 NFL draft

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book for football fans (and their wives)!.......2007-01-22

I read all the time. To me I'll read anything from Clive Cussler to Salmon Rushdie (granted there are a lot of in-betweens there). My point is, I'll read pretty much anything someone puts in front of me. Since Brian's Song (which I know was non-fiction), I can't remember the last time I was able to read a sports-related book and actually enjoy the plotline as well as the real-life parallels. Luckily for me, Wil Mara's The Draft skillfully combines both. To be honest, I'll have to admit that I didn't know many details about the draft, besides what I saw in Jerry Maguire. However, in this book, you really get a behind-the-scenes look. Also, as a plus, these details don't bore you to death or distract from the story-line.

There are several plotlines going on here, and Mara seems to be able to switch between them easily, while not losing the reader. Jon Sabino's rivalry with Brendan Cavanaugh (the Bronco's GM) is interesting and full of twists and turns. Even when you think you know how it's going to end, you're wrong. Mara is just one more twist ahead of you. The Pressner family angle is full of surprises too! I don't want to give anything away here, but suffice to say, you will not want to put the book down.

On the minus side, I'm a life-long Jets fan (we've all got our burdens to bear). So, I've got to say I wish the Jets were in here more, but then again, I'll remember that this is fiction and that the Jets are always the underdogs. Maybe in one of Mara's future NFL books, he'll bring them in. I know, I know: A long shot.

Summed up: A fresh look on the NFL (especially its less-publicized side). I really enjoyed it and I think both men and women (yes, women) all over will too! Better get your copy while you can!

4 out of 5 stars fine sports tale.......2006-11-04

Baltimore Ravens General Manager Jon Sabino has been toasted as the latest genius as his team has won the last two Superbowls. He plans to make history with a trifecta and many professional football pundits make the Ravens the favorite the three-peat.

During the off season, the star quarterback Michael Bell is injured in an accident that leaves him out for the season and the team without a strong player at the key position as neither the back up nor free agency provides the leadership needed to go all the way. Jon knows the best chance lies with the upcoming college draft by taking a chance on a rookie adapting to the NFL right away, which he believes Wolverine Quarterback Christian McKinley can; as he has the talent and played well in the major bowls and Big Ten games. However, without him the Ravens go nowhere. To get him means working a deal with San Diego who has the first draft pick and is willing to sell the rights to the highest bidder of the McKinley Sweepstakes. Sabino plans that to be him at all costs.

Though the intrigue elements (industrial espionage and a quarterback thinking of passing on the pros) seems more like a forced throw into coverage, NFL fans will enjoy the look behind the scenes of a successful professional football franchise. When the plot focuses on Sabino's efforts to insure an opportunity for the historical third ring, the tale is fast-paced and fascinating; when the story line focuses on other characters like a rival General Manager, it becomes time to punt. Still since much of the tale centers on Sabino trying to keep from being sacked, football fans will enjoy THE DRAFT especially with its parallels to Brady (Michigan QB) and Roethlisberger (bike accident).

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Magical fantasy with its shirt off.......2007-04-10

Cramer's character is an open tribute to some of Frank Thorne's bawdy heroines. She wanders a world of magic and technology, in search of a cure for the terrible curse laid on her sister. Mara wanders bare-foot all the time, and bare-everything-else most of the time. And somehow, her magical capacity for delight in getting laid saves her from all the evils that cross her path. It helps her endure the bondage and whatnot of the bad guys' dungeons, and enables a vigorous show of self-stimulation for one of the good guys, as payment for his help. And so on in that general vein.

This B&W comic presents a passable fantasy, with plenty of adult goings-on throughout. Mara isn't a top-heavy as some characters in this genre, but kohl-eyed and cute anyway. The adult activity, though pervasive, is never (well, almost never) the real center of attention. Unlike smuttier comics, the story is always there. As is the lovely and "skyclad" Mara.

The second Milford-Haven novel, chronicling life in a small coastal town, Closer Than You Think is the at times romantic, at times mysterious sequel to "What the Heart Knows". Award-winning writer Mara Purl deepens the intrigue amid Milford-Haven in the wake of a reporter's sudden disappearance and a deputy's search to find him. Gossip, crooked building schemes, eavesdropping, indiscretions and more intersect in a virtually Byzantine network, in this captivating window into the little battles, victories, successes, and failings of ordinary people in a complicated world.

Both of the first two in Mara Purl's series of "Milford-Haven" novels were excellent. "What The Heart Knows" and "Closer Than You Think" were most enjoyable and entertaining. Once I got into them, I couldn't put them down!

5 out of 5 stars Great reading, compelling serial.......1999-04-28

As a reporter for the Japan Times in Tokyo (where Mara Purl grew up), I've followed Mara's career for a long time, and have lately mentioned her novels in my column. My only question is...do I have to wait 10 more books to find out what happened to Chris???

5 out of 5 stars Pure enjoyment of a good story.......1999-04-23

I have so much fun reading Mara Purl's books! I just finished Closer Than You Think, after not having been able to put down What the Heart Knows last weekend. I couldn't have chosen better books for the pure enjoyment of reading a good story. I'm so glad I read them! Now, please tell the author to get the next Ten in her series written!

4 out of 5 stars The bare-foot beauty is back.......2007-04-11

Bare of foot, top, and pretty much every thing else at every chance she gets. Mara is a mystic in training, with a mystic's need to be always in contact with the earth, and with a personal aversion to clothing. This story starts in a shaman's world-beyond, filled with dreamlike jumps from one stream of thought to another. The first jump lands her, starkers, among the evil Sadeians. After her previous encounter with them, they're eager to impose degrading revenge on her, bringing us to the first (and by no means last) scene of whips and chains.

There's actually a lot more of that here in volume 2 (see Mara Of The Celts (Eros Graphic Novel Series, No. 17)), in the many and fast shifts of scene, and a lot less of the first volume's couplings and single activity. This is fully up to the standard of the first volume, though. There's plenty of magical adventure, and Mara gives us a lot of Mara to look at. Come to think of it, so do most of the other female characters. (Is there a reason for men to be so much slower in shucking their shirts?) And, in the end, Mara achieves her goal: she casts off the evil enchantment that had imprisoned the mind of her equally beautiful but better-dressed sister.

It's good fun for grownups. Despite pervasive nudity and some amount of SM and bondage, it's much more of a fantasy story and less of an "organ recital" than other adult comics. If you like Thorne's Lann and Ghita, give it a shot.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great fun, although not as good as some of the other volumes.......2004-08-16

I liked this volume, although maybe not as much as some of the other volumes. In this volume, Mara the demon is here to cause trouble, Urd is called back by the Almighty, a ghost girl tries to hold Keiichi to a promise his grandfather made, and Hasegawa wants to learn how to make the perfect lunchbox for a special someone. The back of this volume has a quote describing this series as "genuinely hear-warming" and I would have to agree. Although the author/artist often deals with themes that are a bit adult (mainly sex), somehow, this series has never gotten raunchy. It's a wonderfully sweet series, something that you can discover in practically any volume you might pick up. This volume seemed a little weaker to me than some of the others, probably because the short story format of some of the stories didn't let the characters shine as much as they could have, but it's still an excellent read.

      5 out of 5 stars Book 8 -- Enter Banpei and Senpei!.......2003-06-01

This graphic novel covers the original Japanese manga Vol. 7 Ch. 45-47 & Vol. 8 Ch. 48-49. Chapter 45-46 is the Mara arc and chapters 48 & 49 are solo tales.

The first part of the Mara arc has her return to Earth where she possesses Megumi. She unleashes Senbei, who is a genie-demon of poverty and disaster, upon Keiichi and company. The second part of the Mara arc has Skuld create the anti-Mara robot Banpei which works a little too well. The third part has Urd being recalled to the heavens and Mara intends to make sure she leaves for good.

The next story has the Nekomi Tech Motor Club on a retreat to a lodge where a shinnentai (manifestation of will) lives. She seems to know Keiichi and is determined to make him fulfill a promise made in 1930! The final story has Belldandy teaching Sora on the art of making boxed lunches while Urd attempts to play matchmaker.

Bottom line: As one might expect from this series, the artwork is great. The stories are light for the most part with the latter two being more humorous. Great for a quick read before going to bed.

4 out of 5 stars I like Oh My Goddess, but this is not one of my favorites..........2003-03-20

After all that Mara has been through with the goddesses--charm allergies, amnesia, the Lord of Terror, other demons--you'd think she'd eventually give up on attacking them. Well, no one ever accused Mara of having a brain, or common sense. She's come back with a genie-like demon named Senbei, who shows up again in the "Devil In Miss Urd" arc. Needless to say, this doesn't do anything to stop the goddesses, and Mara and her accomplice are once again defeated.

Banpei enters, and causes problems for everyone in the household except for Belldandy, with whom he has fallen madly in love. This is a cute story, but it makes you feel kinda sorry for Keiichi and the oldest and youngest goddesses.

Every fan of OMG should have this book in their collection. So buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Senbei Do Happy Dance for You!.......2002-01-07

Another wonderful book in the Oh My Goddess series. Mara returns yet again to wreck havoc on the goddesses. This time she takes over Keiichi's little sister's body, and tries to bring misfortune to Belldandy with teh help of Senbei the demon of poverty. He is a prettyy neat guy who talks in the third person. He also lives in a bottle. Also in this book Skuld builds a robot named Banpei to protect the Morisato household from Mara. The problem is that the robot decides that Belldandy needs protection from everyone, including Keiichi and Skuld. Good stuff. Please read it!

5 out of 5 stars Innocent, funny romance with great art.......2000-06-28

The romance between mortal Keiichi and goddess Belldandy is the most innocent you'll find: rarely do they kiss and never more than that. Surrounding them are Belldandy's sisters: Urd (who wields misfiring love potions in an effort to speed things up) and Skuld (who builds bizarre contraptions which inadvertantly get in the way).

Though this book is named Mara Strikes Back, don't be misled into thinking an overarching plot exists. Characters do recur and remember and act based on what went before, but the stories are largely episodic. Lack of an overarching plot is not a detriment here: it allows Fujishima to be more playful with his characters, and the whole cast is a lot of fun (though Urd often steals the page, as it were). Fujishima's art seems richer here, especially in the backgrounds. His mastery over his art style clearly developed as the series progressed; the differences between the very earliest art and this art are quite striking.

        Book Description

Clean the cuttlefish taking care no to tear their bodies. . . . So begins the recipe for stuffed cuttlefish as the dish is prepared over the course of this engaging novel by one of France's most distinguished contemporary writers.

The Cuttlefish is a melodious stream-of-consciousness novel on the metaphysics of cooking, one woman's attempt to capture the unique ingredients of her elusive identity, and an intimate portrait of the influential people, places, and sublimated traumas in her life. With precision, candor, and delightfully subtle seduction, the narrator transports us into the ineluctable modalities of the aromatic and the gustatory, down secret pathways that lead to hidden emotions, dreams, and childhood memories.

Over the course of her creation of the delicacy, which she lovingly prepares for friends and a secret lover who will soon arrive at her home, the narrator-by turns nervous, sensual, and powerfully philosophical-revels in the audible and olfactory magic of cooking, ruminates on the combination and transmutation of the various ingredients, even extols the ethereal nature of white onions sautéing in olive oil.
