Book Description

Creativity and innovation are widely recognized as essential to success in business, and so many aspects of our lives. For over two decades, Cirque du Soleil has been a world-renowned laboratory of creativity, enthralling audiences around the world by fusing dazzling acrobatics, staging and choreography, and music, along with beautiful costumes and technical effects to inspire and create magical, almost otherworldly theatrical experiences. In The Spark, Cirque's former president of creative content, Lyn Heward, invites readers inside the world and ideas of Cirque du Soleil through the story of an ordinary man searching for meaning in his work and life.

Like so many other people in their careers, sports agent Frank Castle has lost the passion he once had for his job. But a chance encounter with an inspiring Cirque du Soleil director takes him inside Cirque du Soleil to meet the artists, directors, designers, and technicians who create, shape, and perform in their acclaimed shows. As the story unfolds, the artists reveal surprising secrets about the sparks that ignite their creativity — from the pressure of deadlines and the exhilaration that comes from risking it all, to the chance encounters and everyday occurrences that have changed the way they live and work. As Frank comes to discover, every one of us is creative — wherever we work or whatever our job title is — but it’s up to us to tap into that powerful force.

As The Spark makes clear, there is no single formula for creative success–each of us must unlock the power of our imagination in our own way. An inspiring tale that draws on behind-the-scenes stories from the most creative people in entertainment as well as some out-of-this-world Cirque du Soleil magic, The Spark is an unparalleled guide on how to make creativity a part of everything you do.

Lyn Heward is the former President and COO of Cirque du Soleil’s Creative Content Division and is currently acting as executive producer for a variety of special projects. John U. Bacon, a veteran journalist and public speaker, has won numerous national writing awards and is the author of three books.

5 out of 5 stars Creativity in wonderland.......2007-08-18

The Spark is about what ignites the creative fire. It shadows Cirque du Soleil and what drives them to excel and gives us a small peek behind the tour de force performances of this world class performance engine. But what is it that drives these performances and takes world class athletes and makes them a creative team that inpires passion and evokes feeling from their audiences? In this fiction of a bored man, going thru the motions of his life and business, the authors lead him down the "rabbit hole" and into a world of passion, creativity, destiny and fulfillment. It is a lesson we can all learn from. This message, unlike most business books or self help tomes goes down easy and is as effortless as the graceful art of the performers. Some may find it too simple, but most truth is simple. Some may find it as a PR tool for the Circus. Yes it is, but what a tool, for in seeing the Circus as it puts it's best foot forward, (and yes I realize it is not telling me the whole "warts and all" story of this amazing group)...in glimpsing the vision, the guiding principles of this troupe, we may find a model to inspire our creative spark to ignite all over again...and this just might be transformative. Run away down the rabbit hole, and join the Circus for a while...you may never be the same again. Thank you to Cirque for this effort!! Another medium...yet still...dazzling!

5 out of 5 stars Good book for sparking that internal fire of creativity.......2007-03-04

I found the book to be more about igniting your own internal spark than about how CDS is created. Good book.

4 out of 5 stars Spark of Inspiration.......2006-12-11

A sports agent losing the passion he had for his career "stumbles" upon the Cirque du Soleil organization. He hangs out with them for about three months to get to know what makes this organization of creative, professional and passionate people stay motivated and perform at the top of their game all the time. The book is an inspirational snack in a world of junk food philosophy.

If you want a bit of inspiration, a little color in a drab day, check this book out. It's a quick read with sprinkles of original insight and well worth your time.

1 out of 5 stars Such an interesting subject; such a shabby effort.......2006-11-27

This was chosen as a read for our business book club. I looked forward to it. There is nothing of substance here, nothing about the huge, mutli-million dollar money machine the Cirque has become, not that there is anything wrong with that, as Jerry Seinfeld would say. It starts off well but then seems to turn into a vanity press piece, that seems to have been written by the Cirque PR department. Goofy "plot" about stumbling into a show in Vegas, etc. It's a made-up, silly story connected by sugary moments of sentiment overlaid with thin bits of insight. See the show and wait for a better book on this amazing organization.

5 out of 5 stars Motivation.......2006-11-07

This book is an excellent motivational tool. We purchased them for a Leadership Forum and a book was given to each attendee. We received positive feedback on the book and many of the attendees went on to purchase this book for members of their teams.

Book Description

Each of Carlos Castaneda's books is a brilliant and tantalizing burst of illumination into the depths of our deepest mysteries, like a sudden flash of light, like a burst of lightning over the desert at night, which shows us a world that is both alien and totally familiar -- the landscape of our dreams.

Fire from Within is the author's most brilliant thought-provoking and unusual book, one in which Castaneda, under the tutelage of don Juan and his "disciples," at last constructs, from the teachings of don Juan and his own experiences, a stunning portrait of the "sorcerer's world" that is crystal-clear and dizzying in its implications.

5 out of 5 stars The Fire from Within.......2007-08-01

I have been a fan of Carlos Castanda since his first novel, the teaching of Don Juan. This book is easily to grapse and interesting to learn about the life of a socery of Don Juan. Carlos experience so many vision in the fire from within. Being abstract, Carlos explain to the reader about his appreanticeship with Don Juan. From his hiliarous antic, Don Juan display his experience growing up as a seer. The book is highly recommended for any type of reader.

Like all his books. Difficult subject to discuss. People read it to either follow his path or follow for themselves. Either or great book.

5 out of 5 stars To Carlos, with gratitude.......2007-06-22

Carlos Castaneda was one of the most controversial writers of the twentieth century. Some in academia branded him a fraud for claiming his stories were biographical rather than fiction, while lauding him as a great novelist for exposing a mass audience to otherwise inaccessible philosophical abstractions they claimed were largely plagiarized. Each of his works is a piece of a larger puzzle, which makes it impossible to critique any one book without addressing the larger context into which it fits.

His first two books, "Teachings of Don Juan" and "A Separate Reality" describe experiences induced by ingesting psychotropic hallucinogenics prepared by a Yaqui Indian shaman from Sonora, Mexico he called don Juan Matus, and accounted for his becoming a guru to a generation seeking short cuts to spiritual enlightenment, as well as his lifelong interest in the relationship between perception and reality, a theme now explored in many popular books on consciousness and quantum physics. Unfortunately, these books remain his best selling works, in spite of Castaneda refuting their importance in his later works. Readers would be best served to skip these and avoid the risk of being turned off to Castaneda and missing the more stimulating works that followed.

His third and fourth works were "Journey to Ixtlan" and "Tales of Power." In Ixtlan he admits to over-estimating the value of his drug experiences, which caused him to overlook the more profound teachings of don Juan which became the focus of future writings. What emerges is a spiritual discipline dating back to the Pre-Colombian Toltec sorcerers of Latin America, culminating with don Juan's departure from our world, effectively ending Castaneda's direct affiliation.

In his fifth and sixth works "Second Ring of Power" and "Eagles Gift" Castaneda suffers strange flashbacks of what seem to be memory fragments of events he is unable to fit into any logical time sequence. In his seventh and eighth works, "Fire From Within" and "Power of Silence," Castaneda succeeds in reconstructing his lost memories, which derive from teachings previously administered by don Juan while Castaneda was in a "heightened" state of awareness.

In books nine and ten, "Art of Dreaming" and "Active Side of Infinity," Castaneda focuses on what he describes as inorganic predators from another dimension, some having the power to imprison humanity in "ordinary reality" so they can feed on the dark emotional energies we produce when succumbing to the negative thoughts they insert into our minds.

In later years several seemingly substantiating works appeared by two of Castaneda's female apprentices, Taisha Abelar and Florinda Donner-Grau. In addition, two scathing exposés were also published by two of his ex-wives. The first, "Magical Journey with Carlos Castaneda" by first wife, Margaret Runyon, offers little corroboration, since her marriage pre-dates the time when the bulk of Castaneda's adventures were claimed to have occurred. While steadfast that Castaneda was a sorcerer, she doubts the existence of don Juan, even claiming authorship of many of the concepts Castaneda ascribed to him.

The second, and more credible work, is "Sorcerer's Apprentice," by well-known writer Amy Wallace, daughter of the late best selling novelist Irving Wallace. Here again, we find little corroboration since the time of the events she describes is well after the period when Castaneda's relationship with don Juan is alleged to occur. What the book does provide is a troubling look inside Castaneda's final years, a picture of descent into what seems sexual addiction and possibly madness, leaving one to wonder if Castaneda was just one cup of cool-aid short of a Jonestown.

Many have asked why I put any stock whatsoever in Castaneda. A story from my autobiography, "The Vortex" may shed some light. A year before Castaneda published his first book I had an experience that would remain a mystery until Castaneda published "Power of Silence" twenty years later.

For a brief time, in my youth, I became a practicing Muslim, meticulously performing the complex prayer ritual five times a day. Then one night, sitting in my car, frustrated and complaining at not being able to find the address of my next sales appointment, something inside me snapped. It was as if some part of me had disconnected from my body and assumed control, lecturing me about my lack of discipline. A profound calm settled over me, rendering me simultaneously detached and engaged. For two days my sales figures soared. It was as if no one could say no to me. On the evening of the second day I decided to put my new state of being to the acid test by visiting my parents. Their behavior was so uncharacteristically supportive I hardly recognized them. It was enough to convince me that I was now living in an altered reality. But by the following morning I had returned to "normal." So distracting had this event been that I completely forgot to perform my Muslim prayers, and in fact, never did so again.

Twenty years later, in a chapter of "Power of Silence" entitled "Place of No Pity" Castaneda describes a very similar experience. In the aftermath of the event don Juan explains that humans are like televisions stuck on a channel called "self-preoccupation," lacking the energy to tune into any of the vast array of other channels available to us. To change channels, he explains, we first need to accumulate energy, by practicing rituals that are deliberate, precise and repetitious. Do this long enough and eventually our stored energy precipitates a shift to a channel where self-importance and self pity become impossible. Once this happens we connect with the force that controls the entire universe, a force don Juan called "intent," and everything can be bent to our will and even more channels can be opened, assuming we remember to keep practicing the rituals that save our energy.

This one realization alone was enough to inspire me to dedicate my autobiography "To Carlos, with gratitude."

5 out of 5 stars Forget your self-help books: try this guide to business survival.......2007-05-10

I am very happy to write a short review of this fabulous book which I hope will peak the interest of potential readers.

"The Fire From Within" has a timeless quality like other great works. Although much controversy surrounded Castenada as an Academic who became a student to don Juan Matus to learn the way of the Toltec seers, you cannot criticize Castenada's priceless images of the interactions between him and his benefactors.

As if the entertainment value is not enough, many of the "principles" within don Juan's teachings have high application in the corporate world and for personal success - believe it or not.

You can't discover this unless you read Castenada for yourself, but it should be clear that developing Unbending Intent; becoming Impeccable and gaining control over our Internal Dialogue and Sobriety can have powerful meaning to anyone hoping to focus their lives in a world where good leadership is hard to find and victims are too many.

I would leave my comments at this except for the debate about whether Castenda's tales are fiction or not. I don't think that it matters. Maybe it is just an extreme coincidence that Castenada's ideas can blossom into usefulness. Take the concept of Self Importance, for example. Anyone in America's corporate workplace has seen individuals self-destruct as a result of an over-inflated ego. How about Petty Tyrants? Isn't there always someone in the company who uses their position to torment weaker members of a group?

And what about the achievers who really pull it off? Can you see how their Unbending Intent, Impeccability and Sobriety, were big factors in their success? Of course!

5 out of 5 stars Impeccability and the Art of Facing Infinity..........2007-05-01

Castenda gives hints and clues toward and ancient philosophy. Specifically he deal's with "Petty Tyrants" - those who use their position and abilities to enslave or torment others - and teaches the reader the art of facing them without flinching.

It is thought, that if one can do this successfully, repeatedly, he can face anything the universe can throw at him. This is the subtle art of becoming Impeccable.

Also reccomended in the superhero 101 collection is Bouris Mouravieff's Gnosis I, Ouspensky's In Search of the Miraculous, and everything by Georges Gurdjieff.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for all ages.......2007-09-25

I borrowed this book from a friend. I saw it in book orders, but wanted to read before I bought. Now I have all three to series. Now you have to understand, I am what I call a rereader, which means that I reread my books, no one time read for me. Also, I love fantasy books. If you don't like books in the fantasy genre, then you'll probably not like this. But I gained so much from this book and it teaches great lessons for kids. Getting along with others and nature. Friendship. Death. Caring for others and things. Ect. The story is about a college student that rents a room from a lady and her child. The student(David) quickly becames involved in their lives. The Landlady make dragons out of clay, but not everything is what it seems. Throw in a young girl with a soft heart for squirrels and you have a great story. Great to read with the kids before bedtime.

5 out of 5 stars Not as expected but a great story.......2007-08-25

Not what I expected but this children's book is stilla delight to read. It IS about dragons, but also about a squirrel. The dragons are everywhere in Mrs Pennykettle's house and when David moves in as a lodger, he is goven his own special dragon. He doesn't understand at first, the significance of the dragons and helps Lucy tracks down an injured Squirrel. For Lucy's birtday he writes the adventures of Conkers the Squirrel with the help of his new dragon.

The writing is perfect for its age group and not dumbed down so adults will be happy to read the text to their children at night. I look forwards to book two.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible digression - hardly any dragons.......2007-07-25

I was not impressed with this book at all.

I picked it up because of an intriguing story about dragon figurines that come to life - something that struck me as interesting and original.

However, this story is NOT about that.

The story mainly centers around a 20-year old boy who acts like a 6 year old, and ends up dropping lines that made me wonder whether he was regressing in personality and age. The other main character is a 10-year old who is obsessed with squirrels, and it seems the author was obsessed as well.

Honestly, it seems like the author WANTED this to be about miniature dragons coming to life... but got off on such a digress that it turned into a story about saving a squirrel. This is one of those stories where he digressed so much, but probably still loved his horribly written story, that he couldn't bear to axe the parts that had nothing to do with the storyline.

Frankly, the characters are very flat, and downright annoying. There is no way a 20-year-old male would act in the ways described in the story. As I mentioned before, his personality seems to regress before my very eyes...

I don't want to give away the end, but it was the most horribly contrived thing I've ever read.

While I'm not certain of others, I must admit I am disappointed that I was lured into purchasing this book.

Book Description

This book is the fruit of Fr. Dubay's many years of study and experience in spiritual direction and in it he synthesizes the teachings on prayer of the two great doctors of the Church on prayer--St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila--and the teaching of Sacred Scripture.

But the teaching that Fr. Dubay synthesized is not collected from Teresa and John for contemplatives alone. It is meant for every Christian and is based on the Gospel imperative of personal prayer and the call to holiness. All the major elements of these great teachers are ordered, commented on and put in the context of their scriptural foundations. Here is an outstanding book on prayer and the spiritual life written by one of the best spiritual directors and retreat masters of our time, and based on the writings of the Church's two greatest mystical doctors.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-06-01

This book combines readings from the saints and makes it easy to follow. Wonderful insight into how we are to act as christians and the goals each of us could aspire to. For Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and compelling.......2007-04-23

This book is a superior examination of prayer, the spiritual life, as discussed by Saint Teresa of Jesus, Saint John of the Cross and the holy Gospels. The author examines almost every aspect of prayer life. I must say this is not a book one would choose for light reading. It is well written, and Fr. Dubay has a no-nonsense type of writing style which is easy to digest. This book can transform one's prayer life if read in the proper light.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction into the thought of two Carmelite saints.......2006-12-18

I have to frankly admit that I was deeply attracted to this book for two reasons. First, I really like the presentations that Fr. Dubay gives on EWTN and Second, the revies here on Amazon were really high. Also Ignatius press prints good solid orthodox books on doctrine and spirituality. What I got out this book is the Eastern Orthodox concept of theosis (or santification in the Western sense); God became man so man can become god; as St. Athanatius would say. Here we encounter Sts. Teresa and John's well proven path to holiness and as the author makes it quite clear this path is what God askes of us all. The chapter on growth really is practical in saying what you must do in order to gain infused contemplation and by gain, I mean receive as a free gift of God, because infused contemplation is not gained by any techniques. Only avoidance of sins, humility, charity and love to our neighbors, gentleness to ourselves, avoidance of idle talk and too much TV and a great love for God can prepare us to recieve the gift of infused prayer. Sin and "un-love" darkens the mirror on our souls that must reflect the light of God.I also loved the humainty of St. Teresa and how she was loved and deeply loved her friends, something some people do not expect of saints. Overall a book that I will come back to again and again. The only thing I didn't like to much was that I wish the author would have spent more time on explaining to beginners (like myself) what to do. For this reason I bought and plan to read his Prayer Primer by Charis Press. Other recommendations on prayer that I found useful: "God and You" by William Barry SJ, "Opening to God" and "When the Well Runs Dry" by Thomas Green SJ, "Arise From Darkness" by Fr. Benedict Groeschel,
"The Art of Prayer: An Orthodox Anthology", "Beginning to Pray" by Anthony Bloom, and "The Art of Prayer" by Fr. Romano Guardini.

5 out of 5 stars Carmelite Spirituality.......2005-10-22

This is probably the best overall introduction to Carmelite spirituality available in English. Fr. Dubay presents the essential teachings of John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila in easy to understand language.

This is not a book one can or should read in a day or two. It is one of those rare books that you must live with for quite a while. It is challenging and comforting in it's presentation of the christian's call to total discipleship. My copy is all marked up and underlined.

His treatment of the Mansions (Teresa's analogy of the soul's journey to Divine union) is wonderful. Fr. Dubay shows the ways we can get off track and the subtle temptations that would divert us from following Jesus with courage and determination.

This book is not only for the beginner, though it is certainly that, but the best summary of Carmelite spirituality one can read. After going through this book the reader will have a very good and usable knowledge of the Carmelite way to God.
Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The universal call.......2005-10-19

Thomas Dubay has given us a masterful overview in well organized, lucid style, on the works of the towering mystical doctors of the church. His book, steeped in the peerless wisdom of Teresa and John of the Cross, requires careful, attentive reading on every page. The reader will be rewarded with an increased understanding of these two saints whose hearts were enkindled with divine love, and whose lives were incandescent with joy.

A central theme of the book is that God's call to contemplative prayer and, in its highest form, transforming union with Himself, is for every believer, not just for a "fortunate few" enclosed within monasteries. "Scripture knows nothing," Dubay writes, "of two ways to God and two differing prayer paths, one for the many, the other for the few."

Many readers will be surprised to learn that contemplative prayer is "infused," a grace coming directly from God, and not something they can laboriously acquire through techniques or discipline. Every believer is called by "the still, small voice within," as Elijah was. At the beginning of this ancient spiritual journey, we use discursive and vocal prayer, and our own meditations on scripture. We do our part, as much as we can; seeking God's presence, avoiding sin, practicing faith, hope, and charity, striving to bring our own wills in accordance with God's. In His time, and subtly at first, the wonderful-beyond-words grace from the Lord begins to flow.

Dubay clearly, matter-of-factly details, from the writings and the lives of Teresa and John, what to expect as we enter this most holy, most challenging of all human endeavors. His book is an invaluable aid to all Christians, from those on the first steps of the age-old path, to those traveling on its higher reaches.

Book Description

In her fifteen years of teaching, Barbara DeMarco-Barrett has found that the biggest stumbling block for aspiring writers (especially women) is not fear of the blank page but frustration with the lack of time. What woman doesn't have too much to do and too little time? Finding an hour free of work, children, or obligations can seem impossible.

But anyone can find fifteen minutes, whether you're sitting in traffic, waiting at a child's soccer practice, or watching the coffee drip. DeMarco-Barrett has created a practical, inspirational guide for fitting serious writing into those stolen moments. She offers writing exercises and techniques for generating ideas, as well as pragmatic advice from the well-known authors who appear on her radio show. With fifteen minutes a day, she can help you to ignite your pen and become the writer you have always wanted to be.

3 out of 5 stars Just ok.......2007-09-03

This book offers run-of-the-mill exercises that fail to inspire one to write. If you struggle with the act of sitting down and putting pen to paper, this book will not change that. I would love to see a book out there that offers innovative exercises that not only inspire one to write, but also improves writing along the way. If anyone can recommend such a book, please message me.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one!.......2007-08-01

Finally there's a book that entertains and motivates! I thought I was alone in my struggle to find time to write. Barbara DeMarco-Barrett left me crying, laughing, and most importantly writing! This book is a must for any woman who wants a writing life!

4 out of 5 stars Discover How to Make Your Life and Your Writing, Work...........2007-06-25

This is the third book I read recently for busy women who want to write... and be successful at writing through publishing.

The main focus I found in this title was writing in 15 minute timed chunks - and practice at being proficient in writing in this sort of pace to build a writing career, something that will be beneficial for women with busy, appointment-family-career-and-"other-stuff" driven lives.

Demarco-Barret includes exercises and application alongside the content. Each chapter covers an important issue for writers and follows up with the practical.

The reader is given a full view of what to expect as a writer as the main chapter headings include before beginning, getting started, tools and rituals, mining your life, craft, overcoming obstacles and living the life. Reality isn't glossed over with exclamation points and hype, reading this title is like sitting down for coffee everyday with a friend who understands what you are going through as an aspiring writer - because she has been there and wants to share her wisdom with you freely and openly.

5 out of 5 stars If you've ever thought, "I could write that".......2006-10-08

Have you read stories in O, The Oprah Magazine and thought, I could write that.

Do you have ideas that would make a good essay, novel, memoir, or magazine article?

Have you always wanted to get started on these projects but never had the time or just plain didn't know where to start?

If so, this is the book for you.

Forget complex writing theory...this book teaches you how to translate your ideas into writing AND shows you how to work writing into your busy life. (Not just for women by the way!)

This book taught me how to:

1. Get my ideas onto paper.
2. Accept that my first draft might be crappy - but that's OK.
3. Revise my drafts until I had a finished product that I would be proud to show to the world.

It's actually pretty easy if you just follow the author's advice. There's no magic here. You don't need to wait for your 'inspiration'. Like the subtitle says, you just need to ignite the writer within.

Enjoy the book. Let me know what you think.

5 out of 5 stars Pen on Fire: A Busy Woman's Guide to Igniting the Writer Within.......2006-08-24

I kept putting this book down to go and write - which was the objective of course! A very readable, entertaining and inspiring guide which demystifies the writing process and makes it accessible to anyone who wants to try. It also contains some very practical tips for writing style and technique.

Book Description

Writings that touch the pure-flaming heart of God-from the men and women who walked with Him through the ages-guiding into a deeper friendship with the "Father of Lights."

How can I know God is on my side, when so much seems to go against me? Can I really trust Him? How can I feel the comfort of a God I cannot see or touch? Hannah Whitall Smith met with devastating losses and heartache. In her struggle, near despair, she lost all joy in living. And yet as she pressed through the spiritual darkness "into God," she discovered a spiritual "secret" that changed her turmoil into inner calm and happiness.

Hannah Whitall Smith (1832-1911) was the wife of one of the nineteenth century's most celebrated evangelists. Her own writings and ministry inspired thousands. Then tragedy thundered in. First came the loss of a son. Public scandal devastated her marriage. An embittered daughter turned from God. But Hannah's secret made hers a life of transforming love, power and healing blessings that can be ours, too, as we journey in spirit to the place where we are safe within His love.

When I got this book for Christmas I put it away. Another devotional book, oh well, was my thought. Was I wrong. I started reading it on New Year's Day and have not been the same since. What insights Hannah had, and my faith and love in our Lord has been made stronger because of this devotional. It is more than just another devotional. It is inspiring!

Book Description

Fr. Thomas Dubay, a renowned teacher and writer on prayer and the spiritual life, presents a simple, profound and practical book on the most important of all human activities, communion with God.

This primer begins at the beginning: the very roots of the human person--a needy, aching, yearning being who is ultimately satisfied by nothing that even an extremely beautiful universe can offer. Learning to pray is really learning to fall in love--with supreme Beauty.

Prayer Primer is written for intelligent adults (not teenagers) who want God and a serious prayer life, but it does not presuppose that they need or have a theological background. It does take up many questions rarely answered adequately in the classroom or from the pulpit, indeed often not mentioned at all: Why pray? (be ready for some surprises) Why vocal prayer is important and yet should be limited? What contemplation is and is not. Praying with Scripture. Family Prayer--even how to introduce children to group meditation. Prayer in a busy life. Pitfalls and problems--together with solutions. Buddhism? New Age? Centering prayer? What should you do when dry and empty and not at all inclined to pray? How do you even get started? Where and how to begin? Assessing progress. Growing in depth. All of these subjects, and more, are clearly and concisely explained for citizens of this 21st century.

Father Dubay has a gift for writing - it keeps you awake, without the use of any gimmicks. This book is inspiring, authoritative, and gentle. Interesting from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Prayer Primer: Igniting a Fire Within.......2007-01-04

Excellent book. Used as a text with the University of Dayton's Virtual Learning Communities for Faith Formation. While not overly simplistic, it does provide a concrete and easily approachable introduction to the practice of various forms of Christian prayer.

5 out of 5 stars Prayer Made easy.......2006-07-11

This is a superb book. It is easy to understand but is also deep. The explanations of our need for communicating with God through prayer are logical and inspiring. If you want to improve and deepen your prayer life--Buy it ,you'll like it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-02-17

This book is intended for the intelligent person who considers him/herself a beginner in prayer. It introduces the various types of prayer in a very understandable manner. Those who are familiar with Thomas DuBay already know that he is a wholehearted Christian who does not let society set the bar for his teachings. Those who are interested in persuing the Christian life with vigor should pick up this book or "Happy Are You Poor," another very thought provoking book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Prayer.......2003-04-27

What is prayer? Why do we pray? Is all prayer the same? These are questions that many people do not know, or maybe do not even wonder about, yet it is so important. All Christians pray, or ought to, and this book explains the basics of it. Whether you feel a need to enhance your prayer life, or whether you are just curious about what you never were taught on the subject, this book makes an excellent read. I believe this book would be greatly beneficial for any Christian. It is filled with scriptural references throughout, as well as references to other sources such as the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and others by Dubay. It reads very fast, and one may feel inclined to read more on the subject, but the book gives you all you need to get going in the right direction, which is the most important thing. Very orthodox, by an expert on prayer, this book is a great read for Catholics. It would undoubtedly be of great use to protestants as well.

There is no lack of available material and educational programs to teach you everything you ever wanted to know about "management". The bad news is that management isn't the same as leadership. Confusing management and leadership is easy. But management is how an order is carried out. Leadership is why the order was there in the first place. You want to be a leader. This book will show you how!

Light, like the air we breathe, is one of those invisible qualities that most of us only think about when the power goes off and there are no batteries in the flashlight. But ask yourself just what it is, and suddenly light becomes a puzzle indeed. Is light a thing? Is it, as Aristotle claimed, an accident? Physicist David Park covers all the bases in The Fire Within the Eye, his fascinating exploration of the history of light. All the heavy-hitters show up here--Aristotle, Galileo, Archimedes, and Max Planck--but there are also plenty of names the average reader might not recognize, such as the 10th-century Iraqi Abu Ali al-Hasan, who suggested that the objects we see are tiny reproductions of the real thing imprinted on the lenses of our eyes.

Park takes the reader from the earliest theories of Aristotle (light is an accident) to the most recent hypotheses (light is like both a wave and a particle), and he does it in prose that is highly readable. If by the end of The Fire Within the Eye you still don't understand exactly what light is, don't worry: David Park is less interested in defining it than in describing how our perceptions of it have changed over the millennia.

    Book Description

In The Fire within the Eye, scientist and author David Park helps us reconceive the everyday phenomenon of light in profound ways, from spiritual meanings embedded in our culture to the challenging questions put forth by great scientists and philosophers. Park, who is both a gifted teacher and physicist, takes us on a tour through history spanning ancient Greek, Neoplatonic, and Arabic philosophy together with astrology, the metaphysics of Galileo and Kepler, and the role of mathematics and experimentation in modern physics. By creatively synthesizing a broad sweep of historical events and intellectual movements around the theme of light, the author offers readers of all backgrounds a unique perspective on Western civilization itself. Readers will find themselves immersed in lively discussions conducted by a physicist equally at home exploring the invention of perspective by Brunelleschi and Alberti, the writings of Goethe, or the mathematical models inspiring Maxwell's electromagnetic theory.

Plato made light the earthly counterpart of the Good; the early Christians believed the command "Let there be light" unleashed a power that shaped and energized the world. Park follows the connotations of spirituality and power attributed to light in religion, philosophy, art, and literature. At the same time he enables us truly to feel the excitement surrounding scientific discoveries and debates about the nature of light throughout history --Isaac Newton's scientific explanation of color and the raging battles between proponents of light as particles and light as a wave. Park traces the attempts to define light, beginning in the nineteenth century with the proposal that light is a wave motion in a field that unites electricity and magnetism. How this theory was reconciled with the particle theory of light is one of many paradoxes that Park guides us in understanding.

Park writes eloquently of the physical, aesthetic, and spiritual aspects of light, making this book an invaluable guide for all readers wishing to explore the fascinating relationship between science and culture.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD BOOK.......2004-07-21

This book is very good, but I am more interested in the scientific than in the artistic aspects of the conception of light. It is a personal preference, and other person could have the reverse one.
I found some mistakes. For example, the author says that a blue light combined with a yellow one give a green light and that is not true. But the book is still good. I prefer "Catching the light" a lot, but I do not regret have read this interesting book.

4 out of 5 stars Man, Light, and Time.......2000-10-26

The subtitle of Prof. Park's book is "A historical Essay on the Nature and Meaning of Light." That promise is faithfully kept in a thorough, erudite, and entertaining narrative. Park, a physicist, seems equally at home as historian, philosopher and classicist. Paying meticulous attention to the nuances of thought and language, he traces mankind's twenty-five century struggle to understand the phenomena of light and vision, beginning with Empedocles in Greek antiquity and ending in the quantum-mechanical era of Planck, Einstein and Bohr.

With scholarly patience, Park dissects and illuminates the struggles of early investigators to get a grip on the baffling mysteries of light and its interaction with the human eye. This often requires the author to pick bits of sense out of mounds of nonsense. He points out, for example, that even the wildly mistaken hypothesis of visual rays emanating from the eye led to some correct conclusions about geometric optics. Park also underscores the fact that taking the next step puts even the most accomplished scientists at risk. For example, Newton's particle interpretation of light incorrectly called for an increase of speed on passing from air to a denser material and (due to his influence and prestige) delayed acceptance of the wave interpretation pioneered by Huygens and conclusively demonstrated by Young. In an ironic twist, particles of light returned with a vengeance as thoroughly modern quantized photons.

Aside from some minor errors and omissions in figures, the only factual problems I encountered came on page 165, where convergence point P in Figure 6.5 is incorrectly called the focal point of the lens (this would be true only for incoming rays parallel with the optical axis), and the inverted real aerial image formed by the lens is misidentified as a virtual image.

Perhaps the most distinctive quality of "The Fire Within the Eye" is Park's astute and encyclopedic grasp of historical context. One senses that he is telling only a fraction of what he knows about the lives and times of the philosophers and scientists who populate the book.

    4 out of 5 stars Elegant!.......2000-06-28

A must read for everyone interested in Light. It explains everything - dual nature of light, polarization, diffraction, interference, colours, light as vibration of the fifth dimension, etc. Is useful both for the layman and the expert reader. The book's simplicity is its biggest advantage. From simplicity arises elegance.
