It Won't Make You an Overnight Expert, But..........2007-01-17
...it'll certainly get you on your way. I bought this book about six years ago when I first started dabbling in databases and programming. I had no clue what I was doing, so the "mere mortals" part of the title attracted me.
As I stated in my title, this book alone will NOT make you an overnight expert. Then again, it doesn't claim that it will do so. You'll need to take the lessons you can glean from this book and apply them, with some trial and error, over and over and over again, with refinements, before you come anywhere close to being an expert.
Six years later, I can design databases with ease. I no longer have difficulty understanding the intricacies of good relational database design and I've gotten more than a couple of jobs that required database design expertise.
Start here and use the book as a launchpad to learning more. If you stop here, you'll come across as an amateur, but if you start here, your desire to learn more will be your only limit.

Good read for training your rescued dog.......2007-07-03
This book is fun, easy to read, and has many practical tips and ideas for integrating a rescued dog into your home. I work with rescued dogs and offer this book to new adopters when they pick up their new best friend.
Carol Lea Benjamin has written several dog training books, which offer dog owners lots of training advice.

Not About Rescued/Adopted Dogs!!! .......2007-05-12
This book was so disappointing! I bought it after we got an adult dog from a shelter who had some serious behavior problems. But this book was completely useless!
It isn't about rescued or adopted dogs or how to help them. It is a VERY basic training guide [and I do mean *very* basic]. It is only 93 pages long and at least 30% of those pages are just hand drawn cartoons or stark black and white photos that are irrelevant to the text. I read the whole thing in less than 1 hour [an hour that I wasted unfortunately :( ].
There was *nothing* specifically about training or working with second hand dogs and the special problems/challenges and rewards you face.
The training advice is pretty bad too. First, it is very basic. Second, it is very negative and punative - most "modern" trainers would not advocate or approve of her methods. Third, some of the advice is just plain dangerous. [For example, her advice on how to deal with a dog who is growling is actually contra-indicated by every other resource I've read - her advice will actually teach the dog to *bite* first instead of giving the warning growl. Many of the techniques she recommends would be especially inappropriate for a rescue/shelter dog who faces special challenges in getting past aggression and/or fear because of their history.
Do yourself a favor and skip this book - there are many better books on both dog behavior and dog training. This book is a waste of your time.
Do Not Buy This Book.......2007-03-14
This book is dangerous and filled very bad, dangerous advice. It was written in 1998, so giving the benefit of the doubt, perhaps our thinking about homing a rescue dog has evolved, but this book is extremely outdated. It recommends using the dog's crate as a place for punishment -which we all know is wrong. It further recommends "pops" with the leash to jerk your dog into obedience and "staring down" a dog into submission -again, outdated, inappropriate concepts. It is a very high level, superficial, quick read riddled with inappropriate advice that certainly does not speak to how one goes about brining a new, most likely scared, rescue dog into your home.

I was recommended this book as I adopted a dog. I've had dogs, but never an adult rescue dog. I thought it would give me advice on dealing with issues specific to an adult rescue dog, solutions to problems I may encounter, what to expect, etc. What I got was a sappy "be patient and love your dog" summary. Any advice in the book was extremely basic and common sense, especially if you've owned any dog before. Yes, we need to understand and train our second hand dog, but this book provides NONE of the "how". I thought it was a complete waste of money.

I read this book before adopting my first Weimaraner; 4 years later I volunteer as a foster for Weimaraner Rescue and I've re-read it several times. After reading many other training books over the years, I've found Carol Lea Benjamin's dog-training books to be the best in their class.
Our rescue gives Second Hand Dog to each new adopter. I also highly recommend Dog Training in 10 Minutes. Both books provide invaluable information--in an entertaining and informative format--as an easy to read, easy to implement way to acclimate & train a new dog in the household.
All of Ms. Benjamin's books give newbie & experienced dog owners insight to canine behavior as well as provide the vehicle to make your dog "the dog you've always wanted." She emphasizes consistency and humane training that's enjoyable to both owner & dog.
Carol Lea Benjamin's dog-training books should be a must-read for every new dog owner!

It is obvious from practically the first page of Second Hand Smoke that Thane Rosenbaum has not written a typical Holocaust novel. Consider, for example, the name of his protagonist: Duncan Katz. "What kind of a name is that for a Jewish boy?" an old man attending Duncan's circumcision ceremony in post-World War II Miami demands. "One thing is for sure: the boy's name isn't a mistake. These people are trying to tell us something."
"These people" are Yankee and Mila Katz, survivors of the Nazi extermination camps and Duncan's parents. In giving their son the name of a Scottish king on the day of this ceremony, they are both acknowledging his identity as a Jew and attempting to disguise it. Though living in America now, their world view has been shaped by their experiences in the camps; secrecy is the key to survival, and even at a young age Duncan understands that "he may have been born into the family but he was never accepted into its inner circle. Maybe it was for his own protection, his own good. Or, as Mila so often claimed, "maybe they just didn't trust him." So infected is the son by his parents' Holocaust experience that he grows up to become a Nazi-hunter and eventually loses both his job and his family in pursuit of vengeance. Then Mila dies and Duncan discovers her darkest secret: the son she left behind in Poland.
Second Hand Smoke often reads like a thriller--Duncan's early life is marked by his mother's association with Miami mobsters, and the time spent in Poland looking for his long-lost brother is pretty action packed--but there's a strong element of spirituality that runs through it, too, especially when Duncan meets his yoga-master brother, Isaac. Rosenbaum gets off to a terrific start but stumbles near the end, bestowing reconciliation too easily, wrapping up his characters' messy lives too neatly. I read this after "Golems of Gotham" and enjoyed this one even more. The entire Katz family is complex and their struggles thought-provoking and sympathetic. The supporting cast - nurses, gangsters, Nazi prison guards, models - are the fantastic foliage surrounding the main characters.
Thane Rosenbaum keeps good company with other fine Jewish writers, some of whom interweave the Holocaust with other themes, some of whom stay in the shtetl, and some of whom just stay parked on the Lower East Side - go Tepper!
Intense and oh so important!.......2002-07-22
This is a fascinating story of Duncan Katz, the son of Holocaust survivors, and how his parents' horrific experiences in the concentration camps had such an invasive influence on his own well-being, in the same way that second-hand cigarette smoke can make non-smokers quite ill!
Mr. Rosenbaum has a very interesting writing style. Poetic and at times surreal (and sometimes a bit complicated), the author creates a world where not all Jews are portrayed as "nice Jewish boys", where characters such as Mila (Duncan's mother - a card shark and a gangster), Duncan and Isaac are larger-than-life but fascinating. The conclusion was extremely satisfying.
I feel that this story is very important, especially as the world loses many Holocaust survivors to old age. As those with the numbers tatooed on their arms pass on, we need someone to remind the world of the atrocities inflicted by Adolf Hitler on millions and it how it still effects current generations. Thane Rosenbaum has done that job in SECOND HAND SMOKE quite effectively!

I was surprised by the book in its very sad long ago beginnings. I was born after WWII as was Thane or at least Duncan Katz. What I found most interesting was how much a person's emotions were twisted and yet the person lived sucessfully. I look forward to the next two.

This is an extremely well-written novel about the child of Holocaust survivors. It is extremely suspenseful, and although parts of it are painful to read, it is difficult to put down. One of the main issues the book addresses is coping in a world that can be evil. It is also a book about families, reconciliation, and understanding.

I run a second hand parrot rescue and I must say this book is really on the ball. So many times people don't really know WHY is my bird acting like that, Does this bird hate me etc. This book lends knowledge to the behavior and how to handle a rehomed bird. I recommend this book to anyone considering a pet bird, especially a rehomed one.

Important Reading for Adopters and Rescuers.......2005-07-08
If you're adopting an older parrot, much of the information in breed specific manuals will not be relevant for you, since it pertains to hand fed babies. This book contains information that is specific to parrots that have lost their home for one reason or another. Much of the information is recycled from Mattie Sue's previous books on parrot behavior, so if you've read them and commited them to memory, you might not need to add this one. If, however, you are not an expert on parrots, but simply want to open your heart and home to one of these wonderful creatures, this book will help make the transition smoother for both of you. It will also alert you to potential problems. There is also new information about integrating a new parrot into an existing flock. Personally, I think this book should go home with every bird adopted from a rescue organization.

In THE SECOND-HAND PARROT, Mattie Sue Athan makes a good case for taking on a previously owned parrot as a feathered adoptee. While it is true some adoptees are less than civil, Athan has shown through her own experiences that there may be a diamond in the rough underneath those bristling feathers. (Mattie Sue Athan's experiences with her two adopted Grey Parrots, Bongo I and Bongo II are documented on her web site).
Many pet birds are passed on by owners who are dead, too old, too sick, or move to less accommodating quarters. Many of these older birds need only a short period of getting to know you and TLC to become your best buddy. I've become a believer. Having adopted two Cockatiels two years ago who had terrorized everyone at the animal shelter and had them become two big sweeties I know what a little TLC can do. The sweetest bird I own, however, is a "hand-me-down Conure" with two previous owners. My Conure is also the biggest bird I own and the least nippy. Every morning he says "Give me a kiss" which I happily do with a "Thank-you" as my reward. "Used" birds frequently can talk and have learned cute tricks.
Athan offers all sorts of tips on how to get your birds to comply with various challenges you might offer such as bathing, destroying toys instead of your books, and kissing not nipping when you offer your cheek or stick your hand in their cage. In her section on "The Corrective Environment" she shows how many of the tics the new-old bird learned were brought on by cramped, boring, and/or dirty quarters. It is amazing what a little space and a new toy will do to improve an outlook.

Please don't let the title convince you this book is only for people with "re-homed" parrots! It also offers valuable information for AVOIDING losing your companion, and what to do if you find a lost companion parrot. Parrots are lost not just to "fly-aways", but to changing life circumstances in their human flock. This book provides practical tips to help keep the parrot in its home even during times of shifting family responsibilities. Then, of course, it also provides important advice for building trust in the "re-homed" parrot. I HAVE HAD A HARD TIME TRACKING THIS BOOK DOWN IN BOOKSTORES, so I am pleased to find it readily available on Amazon.

This is the book I ran to when I sent back my 8th edition ASC manual. I refer to this book everyday and always have it with me when shooting. Very well laid out and full of useful information. An indispensable tool for cinematographers, and unlike the ASC manual, has NO advertising in it.

I read this book back in film school, it is full of good information and useful tips. For someone who understands film and photography this is a great book. For those who are learning the book is good but may be confusing in some places. That is why I gave it 3 stars.

One Minute Hip realignment.......2007-07-31
Richard Gordon writes with such clarity, caring and love, and the drawings and photos are wonderful. This is a superbly helpful book, easy to follow and learn from. After months of seeing a chiropractor with a rotation in my hips, the problem was gone in about two minutes by just following the simple breathing-touch exercise shown in the book for hip alignment. My husband (a "nonbeliever") positioned his hands lightly and breathed energy as I instructed reading from the book, and lo and behold, my hips aligned themselves. No pain, no complicated procedure. Simple and direct, and I am so very thankful! Just that healing alone more than paid for the price of this invaluable book.

I'm just an occasional user of the healing arts. I started out learning w/ Healing Touch from a gifted practitioner who told me about it. When I tried it on my mother, the pains would just radiate into my arms and I'd feel drained after a session. Then I found Quantum Touch and combined therapies. After more than a year later and only several tries, I can now do a session on my mother without the pain or drain associated with it. While watching her vital signs monitor, I saw some normalization in her breathing and heart beat while running energy on her vs. when I stopped running energy.
I also tried the coca cola trick and it does remove the carbonation, but for me, it does take time and concentration. Not bad at all for a newbie who's never done this before.
I only gave it 4 stars because the publication itself had misquoted pages numbers and I had to search for the correct page. Other than that, it's very easy to learn and has made a huge difference when I use it.
Fun stuff. Who knows, maybe I'll make a career out of this.

This book is excellent in covering the basics of Quantum Touch therapy as well as presenting some very valuable tips on how to condcut a healing session properly. These tips are applicable to other healing modalities and not just Quantum Touch. The reason I gave the book four stars is because the exercises lack a more thorough description which makes it somewhat harder to learn on one's own. However, if you are not yet familiar with what Quantum Touch really is and are looking for a solid, down-to-earth, practical and effective healing modality, this is the book to read.

I stumbled upon this book, it is the teaching book to the course Quantum Touch. It is so easy to read and learn the techniques they are putting forth. If you are interested in hands-on healing this book is a must!

I love this book. It explains all of the sewing techniques in detail with diagrams and pictures. French Handsewing by Machine includes the Heirloom Party dress pattern in sizes 1-10, and a Christening Dress pattern sizes 3,6 and 9 months. There are also instructions for making a French Blouse by adapting the party dress pattern, and a Round Lace Portrait Collar to go with it. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning french heirloom sewing.

Hands-On Physical Science Activities is an excellent resource for teachers, parents, and students. This book is a compilation of over 180 easy-to-use hands-on activities in the areas of Nature of Matter, Energy, Light, Sound, Simple Machines, Magnetism, Static Electricity, and Current Electricity.
The inquiry/discovery based approach of this amazing resource encourages students at the intermediate level (grades 4 to 8) to get inviolved in understanding scientific facts and principles while maintaining their interest, creativity, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn. Hands On Physical Science Activities assists teachers in establishing a sucessful science program by motivating teachers to educate by use of hands-on activities and developing students thinking to become effective problem solvers. All the activities presented in the book can be easily used since they require everyday common items found at school or at home and are safe to conduct. A NOTE OF CAUTION..........2007-10-07
I learned some things from this book. But her exercises surely didn't cause my carpal tunnel to go away as she seems to be claiming. Here is my cautionary note: Do NOT do those massages with your bare hands unless you have big, strong, very flexible hands. My hands are small and, like some others, I have found that using them for anything but the gentlest massage can actually harm them. There are all kinds of helpful massaging devices out there from large to small rolling squishy balls, to a hard roller ball strapped to the hand, and on and on. For trigger points, and I definitely have found that addressing them helps, those devices are also good, but especially it helps to have something like a Theracane which can put more pointed pressure on the "hot" spots.

I've suffered with carpal tunnel syndrome for 18 years.
This book sits on my coffee table like a reference book. I find the procedures difficult to do on my own (symptoms affect both hands - when I massage one hand with the other my massaging hand goes numb!) so my husband is trying to do the massages on my shoulders, arms and hands when he can.
It DOES help my carpal tunnel symptoms, although I'm not totally relieved yet. I believe if we were more diligent with the procedures recommended in the book, I would be healed.
It's definitely worth the $$ to learn about ways to help yourself - it sure beats surgery!

This book means well but is not based on sound medical principles. It freely criticizes other methods ("the failure rate for steroid injection is...about [sic] 75.6% of all patients"; "for surgery...the average failure rate, which is very conservative, is 57%...after 6 years the onset of these symptoms can [sic] reach higher than 90%". No references are given for these "precise" numbers, which are higher than typically quoted values.
In marked contrast, Ms. Montgomery cites no data whatsoever on the success rate of her own trademarked therapy. Instead, the book is well endowed with glowing anecdotal testimonials. Be aware of her methods: she is described as a naturopathic doctor, and holistic health practitioner. She uses hair tissue analysis to evaluate nutrition. She is not a medically trained person.
From the very beginning, this book (like some others) conflates carpal tunnel syndrome with repetitive stress injury. In fact, the cause of carpal tunnel problems is varied, and not always from RSI. For example, the National Institute of Health's Carpal Tunnel Factsheet on its website states: " Most likely the disorder is due to a congenital predisposition - the carpal tunnel is simply smaller in some people than in others. Other contributing factors include trauma or injury to the wrist that cause swelling, such as sprain or fracture; overactivity of the pituitary gland; hypothyroidism; rheumatoid arthritis; mechanical problems in the wrist joint; work stress; repeated use of vibrating hand tools; fluid retention during pregnancy or menopause; or the development of a cyst or tumor in the canal. In some cases no cause can be identified. There is little clinical data to prove whether repetitive and forceful movements of the hand and wrist during work or leisure activities can cause carpal tunnel syndrome."
Check high-quality sources on the Internet, and evaluate the likely benefit of various treatments before proceeding with recommendations from a source of this kind.
It really does work........2007-06-11
I am a 46 year old classical guitarist that has suffered may years with carpal tunnel/Rsi. I tried everything short of surgury but nothing worked. I also type on a computer over 8hrs a day. I bought the book. I went to see Ms Montgomery. In one session my pain was gone! I really mean it, it was the best thing I ever have done for myself. You don't need surgury, you need this book. With daily exercises I am completely pain free, I cannot recommend this enough, it really does work. Give it a try, you wont be sorry.

After starting a new business in 2005, and in continuing our work in Ergonomics, Risk Management, and Workplace Safety, we incorporate Kate's book with every evaluation and training we conduct. As I wrote before, beginning in 1994, I became affiliated with the Montgomery Method. I have utilized the techniques in hundreds of ergonomic and work injury cases. I have found that the Montgomery Method is effective in not only improving the outcome of repetitive strain disorders, it is a viable, preventable injury program I highly support and recommend. Now we are spreading the word to our other Consultants - getting Kate's healing ways in the hands of many more people.
We continue to buy her book in bulk - so that we can provide a copy to our clients (companies), and to individuals suffering from work-related carpal tunnel syndrome and/or upper extremity injuries.
We see wonderful successes in people using the Montgomery Method.

Best "help" book I've read since my 33 year old son had a stroke. Couldn't put the book down and was amazed at how many similar things that we had gone through--AWESOME read for any young person who had a stroke or their caregivers.

My father is much older than Paul when he suffered his stroke in December of 2000. My father's stroke was very severe and has left him totally paralyzed on his right side and unable to speak or effectively communicate in any manner, which is the same side and conditions that Paul suffered. This book gave me hope that some day my 78-yr. old father may be able to communicate on some level. All speech therapy has been stopped for my father, but after reading this book and seeing what 8 years of therapy has done for Paul, my family is looking into our options once again. I can think of nearly nothing worse than being able to understand most of what is being said around you and not being able to communicate back. People with aphasia are essentially trapped within their own body. Thanks, Paul for having the courage to move forward with your life and to tell your story. It truly gave me hope!!

I admit, I am also from Philly, and nobody messes with us. Paul wouldn't accept any diagnosis other than a life that was interesting and fulfilling. It's remarkable how he struggled to get back his body. It's a funny uplifting book that should give inspiration to other head trauma victims. (And a nice reminder to the rest of us.) Paul and Stephanie have written about regaining a lifestyle they enjoyed in spite of new disablities. I found it fascinating that Paul came back with more of a sense of humor and a more outgoing personality. Imagine a man with aphasia starting conversations with his fellow commuters! What pluck. It's a readable book, for anyone, not just stroke victims.

For 8 years I led a support group for people with stroke and other brain injuries. This honest, funny, gutsy account of one man's struggle to regain his life after a devastating stroke shows what can be done, and what it takes to do it.
What struck me most in this inspiring story was Paul's ability to keep on trying despite innumerable setbacks. I felt empowered by his wife's tireless advocacy, creative solutions, and search for resources. As a member of a family that struggles with chronic illness, I enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone seeking to change a life.
Living with a stroke.......2000-10-19
Me and my husband read this book together and we did find some parts of it very helpful, but is is lacking in reality the depression and guilt, along with the sorrow that a person feels when they have suffered a stroke. My husband had a stroke at 40, even thou my husbands stroke was not as severe as Pauls, he made alot of his recovering years sound like a walk in the park.
