short quick and to the point.......2007-05-28
Dirty little secrets by Claude Anderson
Glossed over and misrepresented, virtually the most misunderstood of all subjects ....the history of the black race...a compilation of bits of facts, coincidences, contradictions, sexual exploits and tantalizing stories corrected and brought forth. Be introduced to heroes, warriors, and statesmen (Don Pio Pico, John Horse, David Walker, Khufu, Sabastian and Lari Giles). Others who fought for the people (Thad Stevens, Gen Santa Ana, John Brown, J.C. Harris), and some who were the ward connally and david duke of the day (Davy Crockett, William Penn, Haywood Shepard, John Chaves). Be introduced to arab slave trading to the tune of one million people over a 100 years confused under smothered religious conflicts, the folsom people, the berlin conference of 1876, slave Russians captured by the Germans, the buying and selling of slaves that occupied major places in newspapers....and tons of similar information, well worth the purchase.
Excellent Experieince.......2007-05-17
I received my books in a timely manner and in great shape. Thank you.
Dirty Little Secrets Continued.......2007-03-12
Dr. Anderson (and his son) have done it again! Excellent follow-up to volume one. Recommended reading not just for African Americans but for all who have a sincere desire to know more about American history.
My kids needed something........2006-11-06
It was amaizing to watch my two teen girls get some of the history of America filled in. They now have a better understandign of the why's and hows of history in the Americas.
My girls are now ready to not allow anyone tell them that they are inferior just because they are Black. They know if they fail it is because they are not working hard enough and/or not in the right place at the right time. They know that they can because despite the Americas prejudice, there were blacks that were so successful that they had to be removed from history by jealous writers of American history.
Thanks for the new pride.
A MUST HAVE.......2003-03-26
I ENJOYED THE INFORMATION THAT WAS PROVIDED BECAUSE I DEFINITELY WAS NOT TAUGHT ANY OF THIS INFORMATION IN SCHOOL. IF YOU'RE AN AFRICAN AMERICAN, YOU SHOULD POSSESS ONE COPY OF THIS BOOK LIKE YOU MAY HAVE A BIBLE IN YOUR HOME. ALSO, MAYBE A LOT US US NEED TO START SEARCHING OUR FAMILY TREE.

Book Description
For disgruntled music fans wondering why music played on the radio is not only worse now than in the past but also not nearly as revelatory as it once was, this book presents a detailed discussion of how the record business fouled its own livelihood. This insightful dissection covers numerous aspects of the industry's failures and shortcomings, including why stockholders play an important role, how radio went from an art to a science and what was lost in that change, how the record companies alienated their core audience, why file sharing might not be the bogeyman that the record industry would have people think, technology’s effects on what and how music is heard, and dozens of other reasons that add up to the record industry’s current financial and artistic woes. With eye-opening observations culled from extensive interviews, this exposé offers insights into how this multi-billion-dollar industry is run and why it’s losing so much money.

A Must Read for Music Fans & Musicians.......2007-06-06
I came across this book at my local library. After looking through it, I decided to check it out. This book, written by someone who works in the music biz is a must read for not only musicians but music lovers as well.
The author, a veteran of the music biz shows why music sales are down & why blame for that goes to the music biz itself. From forcing VERY bad music down our throats to briding radio stations to play this music. Also forcusing only on the youth despite the fact that they make up only a small % of those who actually buy music (fact is most music buyers are older folks & 60% of all music sales are back-log catalog or reissues). It's not surprising that people have either stopped buying music altogether or go online to look for the music they want.
Broadacst radio is also in the same boat as we see more & fewer stations
being owned by fewer and fewer owners, there's a decrease in musical diversity on-air. Thus causing an exdous of people towards satelle & internet radio.
Then there's the record companies screwing over their artists. One artist in the book went from going Gold (selling half a million copies) to flipping burgers.
I can keep going, but you're find out more in the book. Also "The label: the story of Columbia Records" by Gary Marmorstein is also worth reading.
I Was Hoping For More........2007-05-25
While DLSOTRB:WSMMYHS is an entertaining and at times fascinating read, I found little new information. Instead it offers further evidence of the endemic corruption within the record and radio industries. Still I can recomend it, particularly as an introduction to the harsh realities that face those who seek success as recording artists. Makes a good companion to Hit Men: Power Brokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business
A Shot In The Foot.......2007-04-30
Scam, scam, scam, one cut sounds good, on a CD of say ten cuts, and then things like "Junk Music" you know electronic this, and electronic that, and bogus lyrics about nonsense subjects. Then there comes the lyrics that are outrageous, where women are refered to as bit**hes and hos', the kind of thing that got Imus fired. So let us also fire the recording excutives who allow these lyrics to be in the music in the first place. No matter how one tries one cannot justify the constant use of these terms. For artistic expression, or otherwise. So no wonder people go to the internet to download their music just to get what they want, and leave the fill in garbage behind. The recording industry has indeed shot itself in both feet, and instead of looking at itself, they blame everyone else. Including the public they have so misused over the years.
Here is a book turning back the veil and giving everyone a look see at what lies beneath. All the scams, aganist the artists, and the buying public as well. Then there is something called market friendly music, somewhat cookie cutter music, instead of the true expressions of the artists. Recording excutives telling you what you want to listen to instead of music which may or may not determine how long said artist's career will be.
Let us not speak of independant recording companies, there are very, very few, if any they are all owned by Universal, Sony, or some other big company. Again designed to have absolute control.
Thinking of a recording career make this book a must read, to give you a heads up.
fascinating and inspiring.......2007-01-27
A great read - full of worthwhile information and lots of laughs, too (light and dark). The author synthesizes analyses of the many elements of what is a sprawling, multi-tentacled, story into a cogent, satisfying, whole. The book's provocative title may lead some to wrongly think this a sensational expose - more sizzle than steak. Rather, it's a plain-talking look at the business of music that deserves to be read by any and all who care about the subject. This is a book I'll be happily recommending to all my friends and colleagues.

Couldn't put it down.......2006-10-22
This is the first book in what I hope is a long living series.
Marisela is an ex gang member. She is the ultimate heroine. She is tough, smart, and sexy. She starts off tracking her exboyfriend to a club in order to bring him in before he can skip bond. She soon realises things aren't always what they seem and she gets involved in Frankies world... I don't want to spoil the plot so I wont say much more other than the characters have a lot of chemistry and Julie has created a wonderful adventure series... With a lot of romance mixed in. A great book. It has everything.
I absolutely love her characters.......2006-06-28
Julie can write a helluva good book!!!
I can't wait for part two.
DEFINITE page turner!!!.......2005-06-28
This book is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! It was full of thrills, laughs, romance...all around great book. I couldn't put it down and finished it within a few days. The whole time reading I could picture the book playing out in my head - This would make an amazing movie/series. Thankfully this book is the 1st in a series so there will be more to come. Anyone thinking of buying this book - DO SO - you will not regret it. I can't wait for the 2nd book to come out.
Mindful of Stephanie Plum.......2005-05-25
In Tampa at the Club Electric, Marisela Morales runs into her former lover Francisco "Frankie" Vega. Ten years ago when she was a teen they were an entry, but he spent seven years in prison as an undercover DEA informer, has been out two years, but recently was busted for possession. Unbeknownst to him, Marisela works for AAA-Able Bail Bonds and has for the last seven years as an enforcer.
Although he still desires her, Frankie has other problems to deal with so he plans to go home alone. She plans to bring bail jumper Frankie back with her. However, she also has not forgiven Frankie for breaking her heart a decade ago. Before taking him in, Marisela wants vengeance as only a woman scorned can demand even if she still finds she loves the rat.
Mindful of Stephanie Plum, Marisela is a fine protagonist who has been a terrific enforcer for several years because her boss Alberto Garcia understood a basic tenet of not sending an employee back to home turf especially relatives and friends. Thus her chasing after the man she loved who she believes jilted her brings tension as Marisela proves Alberto is right. Readers will appreciate this strong cat and mouse thriller while wondering throughout just who is the rodent as the teenage love of the lead couple threatens to enflame them as adults, but both believe that there time has passed and have other issues to deal with first. Julie Leto provides a tense character driven suspense laden "Bad Girl" tale that subgenre fans will read in one sitting.

Leto delivers FIRE!.......2005-05-25
Julie Leto has been one of the top writers to emerge from Harlequin's Blaze line.
She is a sassy, sexy author that loves people, loves her characters. She likes to dance on the razor thin edge of the envelope, is unflinching in her sexuality of those characters, so you could see Leto would soon want to spread her wings and walk on the wild side with a wee bit more 'elbow room'. She gets it with this Downtown Press title Dirty Little Secrets. On the ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) I received, it has a neat red and black Chit Lit style cover. I see they have updated it to give you a female James Bond feel. Whatever the cover, the package within is dynamite!
Leto is launching a new series, featuring a sexy, kick (...), Latina bounty hunter. She is not the stay at home Chiquita, but loves danger and chases it with a passion. She is also passionate about ex-boyfriend Francisco Vega. She hasn't seen her old love for ten years. A broken heart that never healed, sees her going after Frankie when he skips out on bail. Now, he's in the cross-hairs of her target for more reasons than one. She tracks him down to one of their old haunts, a Tampa dance club, and sets about to seduce the lad into her clutches.
Only, Frankie is on his own agenda. He's world is dangerous, deadly, as he moved through the underworld of arm dealers, killers and dirty dealings on the major level. Marisela is a complication he didn't need, only there is no shaking her. Not that he really wants to, mind you. So Marisela is pulled into Frankie's shady side of town, she has to prove there is more than one way to get her man.
This book sizzles with Leto's sharp writing. However, fans of Leto, understand this is not typical romance. This is adventure series where manhunting is literal!! The romance between Marisela and Frankie is typical Leto singe your fingers because the pages are too hot, but this is not category romance.
Kudos for gusty Leto for stepping up to the challenge and leaving the safe nest of Harlequin Blaze to deliver this outstanding novel!

Customer Reviews:
Lame, hacky trash.......2007-06-28
Inexplicably, this piece of hackwork is littered with "Pop Quizzes" which ruin the flow of trivia. The writing style is hack and tack, not fun.
A section of this trash (rented from library BTW) runs through the sex lives of the Presidents in unctuous and unfunny fashion. Thomas Jefferson is referred to as "Jeffie" and true to form, hack Orloff outright lies about Jefferson's supposed fathering of children with slave Sally Hemings, propping up her opinion as fact when all available DNA evidence only suggests Thomas was but one of 25 possible candidates.
A Founding Father deserves better than this and so do readers. Library rental only. ZERO stars.
Funny and Factual!.......2001-02-16
Really enjoyed this quick reading book...lots of trivia presented in a witty, funny yet informative way. This book would make a great gift for girlfriends or your lover.
Dirty Little Secrets - Fast and Fun.......2001-02-07
Orloff does it again.
This book is a gem and a fun gift for anyone with a secret or not-so-secret love. Additionally, I learned a great deal of fun facts and tidbits (and didn't expect to!).
Kudos. A great gift for someone special -- yourself or another. I highly recommend it.
A Raving Delight.......2001-02-02
Funny!! Funny!! Funny!! This information will turn "selective" dinner conversations into a hostess pleasing affair. The chapter on Presidential Pu__y contains some really IMPORTANT "stuff". You'll laugh, laugh, laugh. The "horizontal bop between the sheets" will become the new phrase, and just think, I'm the first on the block to use it. Enjoy. You'll put it down but you'll pick it up again. It's that enjoyable.
Fun and interesting!.......2001-01-26
Ever curious about the history of quirky stuff? This book is loaded with interesting facts about a topic rarely discussed in Western Civ 101! It's funny and true all at the same time! You'll be surprised how hard it is to put down!

Insider secrets that can improve your credit score
These days, maintaining a good credit report and FICO score is critical. This insider guide reveals how the FICO score is calculated—and lets you in on how to manipulate it. Dirty Little Secrets from the Credit Bureaus offers you little-known strategies for improving credit scores and making a credit report look attractive to lenders. Credit experts from well-known companies show you the best way to communicate effectively with the three major credit bureaus to make corrections and update information. Plus, it reveals how you can get bad information legally removed from credit reports.
Customer Reviews:
It is what it is.......2007-08-06
I think this book accomplishes its narrow purpose - to be an extremely basic overview mini-book for the credit novice. There is no in-depth examination of any topic, the title is definitely misleading (all the while I read I kept waiting in anticipation of the 'dirty little secrets' that were never to materialize) and will not be informative for anyone who has a basic knowledge of managing credit. Even if you are a credit novice, this is not a reference resource that you need to own, save yourself the purchase price and get it from the library instead.
No new or "secret" information.......2007-08-01
The things that this book told me were things that are common sense & common knowledge about credit scores and credit reports. There was nothing in it that would help me repair my credit besides the traditional step: try to pay off as much as you can, which is a probblem when you dont have the money. It wasnt what I expected.
Credit 101 at it's best.......2007-07-10
I purchased the book, and, no, there are no "dirty little secrets" in the book. The title is more to grab your attention than anything. This book is credit 101. It takes a topic that is (lets all agree) very BORING, and puts it into a form that is easily understood by anyone with a 9th grade reading level. I work in the credit business and I look at people's credit every day. Most of them are a nightmare precisely because they don't understand how credit works, or what helps, or what hurts. Credit is not getting better. It's getting worse, and this book should be a mandatory read. Not because it's full of incredibly detailed information, but because America as a whole is credit-ignorant and could use a 101 crash course. Yes, you could get the same information from surfing multiple websites, but if you want all that information in a very simple, short, and easy to understand book, this is it. Parents aren't teaching good credit information to their kids, so who's going to give them credit 101 info? This book is so basic that it should be a mandatory read for kids as soon as they land their first job. Yes, the title is a bit misleading. No, there are no earth shattering tidbits in it. Considering most people in America have NO CLUE about the ins-and-outs of how credit works, or how even a simple late pay can damage their credit, or how to go about resurrecting their credit, I would strongly suggest this book.
No Good.......2007-07-07
Do not buy this book. It contains very generic information that you can get almost anywhere. I learned nothing new. At the end it contains 2 interviews with the "credit reporting agency gurus" (public relations specialists from 2 credit reporting agencies), basically saying the same things you find on their websites. The book actually seems like it was written by the CRA's to favor their rights and positions - not the consumers. The only "Dirty little secret" is that this book was a waste of money. I am returning it. Try Bestcredit by Dane Neal instead. BestCredit: How to Win the Credit Game
A Most Misleading Title........2007-01-04
I believe Mr. Rich has "written" quite a few of these little "books"--small-size, large-font cut & paste jobs that require less authorial than editorial skill in stitching together or, at best, paraphrasing. But I have no hard feelings about that--I wish I had the connections to do it myself; God truly does know I could do it better. The problem is that this book contains not one "Dirty Little Secret" it claims to divulge. The "insider" interviews with Credit Bureau representatives are as hard-hitting and helpful as the pablum you'd find in the FAQs at those companies own web sites. It's as if the Credit Bureaus themselves produced the book. There's nothing wrong with this, if it's disclosed, but it's surely misrepresentation to call the result "Dirty Little Secrets". Please. Skip ahead to Stephen Snyder's Credit After Bankruptcy. Or the web, if you have more time.

Book Description
Surrounded by an aura of political duplicity and civic unrest the even now obscures the objective eye, the Vietnam War remains one of the most highly charged subjects in our national history. But with its unique and perceptive examination of the conflict, Dirty Little Secrets of the Vietnam War offers a critical addition to the library of Vietnam War history.
Essentially a compendium of unknown facts, hidden details, and revealing statistics, Dirty Little Secrets of the Vietnam War allows us to see what really happened to American forces in Southeast Asia, separating popular myth from explosive reality in a clear, concise manner. Containing more than two hundred examinations of different aspects of the war, the book questions why the American military ignored the lessons taught by previous encounters with insurgency forces; probes the use of group think and mind control by the North Vietnamese; and explores the role technology played in shaping the way the war was fought. Of course, the book also reveals "the dirty little secrets," the truth behind such aspects of the conflict as the rise of the Montagnard mercenaries--the most feared group of soldiers participating in the secret war in Laos--and the details of the hidden struggle for the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Like the other two books in the Dirty Little Secrets series, this book is an indispensable companion to any Vietnam War collection, a lens that allows the reader to separate the necessary facts from the reality, of one of our nation's most complex and haunting wars.
Customer Reviews:
Incomplete information.......2007-08-30
I bought the book in hopes it would add to the research material that I have collected to study my father's service in Vietnam. He was a Marine helicopter door gunner and flew hundreds of missions in a CH-46 Sea Knight. This book gives what appears at first glance to be a comprehensive chapter on the air war but makes no mention of the CH-46 helicopter. This is an unfortunate dissapointment because the CH-46 played such an important role for the Marine's in I Corps. The Marines used the Sea Knight in similar roles as the Army utilized the Huey Slick (resupply, medevac, troop & recon inserts/extracts, etc) and there were many squadrons throughout I Corps from 66-71. Obviously the author felt it unnecessary to include Marine Helicopters yet included stats on three different models of the Chinook CH-47. This omission makes this whole book suspect in my view for it is likely there are many others.
Comments on "people sniffer" are totally bogus.......2007-03-15
I was there and I did that and he is techinally and tactically completely incorrect. Not even close. Didn't read any more of the book (online), but based on that intimate assessment, don't believe anything he writes.
A entertianing, fact-filled overview of the Vietnam War.......2005-04-30
The title of this 375-page book about the Vietnam War is not accurate. There really aren't too many so-called dirty little secrets revealed and most of the material is not controversial, but the book does have a lot of interesting perspectives and factual data re the war. Eschewing the chronological approach Dunnigan and Nofi write a lot of short interesting chapters on everything from a sketch of the pre-U.S. involvement history of conflict in Vietnam and adjoining nations (which still continues as the growing ethnic Vietnamese population continues suppressing and displacing minority groups) to summaries of each aspect of combat (Army, USMC, helicopters, air war, Naval campaigns (perhaps the weakest section), etc.), descriptions of major actions and incidents and overviews of in-country "cultural" issues (drugs, racial relations, popular music, etc.).
One hallmark is lots of statistics on various topics (casualties, military demographics, air craft, weapons used, etc.). Most of these are from official sources and source references - increasing lacking in much today's politicized nonfiction - are provided. Some of the statistics are explained and provide illustrative insights but unfortunately some of the intriguing data are not well explained.
For instance, there's a general impression that surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) were the overwhelming danger to U.S. aircraft and air-to-air combat was a significant aspect of the war. But the authors present statistics which show that only 11% of aircraft lost in combat were lost to SAMs, 4% were lost in air-to-air combat while the remaining 76% were lost to anti-aircraft artillery and various conventional ground-based weapons fire. However, the authors don't clarify that many, if not most, of aircraft losses occurred over South Vietnam where SAMs and MIGs were not available to our adversaries. The 25% rate of US Navy loss to SAMs and MIGs compared with only 12% for USAF/USMC presumably reflects that the Navy operated relatively more over North Vietnam itself from Tonkin Gulf-based carriers while the USAF/USMC operated a larger percentage pf their fixed wing aircraft over the South.
Another fascinating tidbit are the statistics about deserters who accepted amnesty in the mid-1970s - many of whom had gone to Canada - showing they were disproportionately (86%) in the lowest two classifications out of four military intelligence test classifications.
A suggested reading list, multi-page glossary and extensive indexing give what is basically an entertaining read for military history buffs who are not expert on Vietnam a bit of extra value as a reference for further study.
Recommended for Vietnam War, Cold War and general military history buffs and is an excellent book about the Vietnam-era for people not even born before the war ended.
Reviewed on the 30th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. On April 29, 1975, Radio Saigon began playing Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" (an interesting fact NOT mentioned in this book) as a signal to begin Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of all American personnel from South Vietnam.
FORGET THE TITLE... IT'S MARKETING FOLKS.........2004-03-28
OK, SO THE TITLE IS A MISNONER..
AS A HISTORY LOVER, (44 years ) I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT THIS IS A MUST READ FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO KNOW THE INTER WORKINGS OF BEING AT WAR IN VIETNAM.
THIS IS NOT A BOOK YOU BREEZE THROUGH IN A COUPLE HOURS.
I FOUND MYSELF STOPPING, DIGESTING INFORMATION, SORTING OUT WHAT I HAD THOUGHT WAS FACT AND EVALUATING THE AUTHORS COMMENTS.
SO WHERE IS IT WRITTEN THAT EVERYTHING IN A NON-FICTION BOOK IS 100% CORRECT?
MISTAKES ARE MADE AND OF COURSE THE AUTHORS PERCEPTIONS OF " FACTS " POP UP IN HIS WRITINGS.
THAT IS EXACTLY WHY ONE MUST READ THE SUBJECT MATERIAL
BY OTHER WRITERS.
THIS BOOK OFFERS A GOOD QUICK INDEX TO GO BACK AND RE-READ THOSE AREAS THAT INTEREST YOU MOST.
THIS BOOK IS JAM FULL OF MILITARY INFO THAT MOST US REALLY ENJOY KNOWING ABOUT.
GO BUY IT AND I THINK MOST OF YOU WILL AGREE WITH ME.. THIS IS GOOD STUFF.
Title is misnomer.......2004-02-29
The title is a misnomer. Virtually everything is covered in other books on Vietnam. I suspect that the reviewers who praised this book on the basis of it containing hitherto unrevealed information simply have not read anything else on the subject. It does give a pretty good, if somewhat superficial overview of the war as well as the background history leading up to it. I would recommend it except for the pervasive (but not overwhelming) right wing cant. For example, the authors state that one of the reasons the war was lost by the South was that the superpowers supporting the North had more will and staying power than those (actually, one, the U.S.) supporting the South. They neglect to mention that the Americans were fighting and dying there but Russians and Chinese were not. They also adhere to the pervasive, but very questionable premise that had we been allowed to bring our full military power to bear, we would have won. They do acknowlege that U.S. losses would have been much higher and the subsequent occupation would also have been very costly and prolonged. Still, there is much information conveniently collated here from many diverse sources and if one decided to read only a single book on Vietnam, one could do worse.

Book Description
Ever since she was a little girl growing up in Georgia, Tyler Blake has dreamed of two things: being a movie star and finding a man who would love her unconditionally. Watching her mother leave her father for the money and abuse of another man, all Tyler has are her dreams. But where those dreams lead her is also the problem. As soon as Tyler graduates from high school, she heads to the Big Apple to attend college and to pursue her acting career. But nothing prepares her for life in the big city. Its not long before she gets caught up in a scene of sex, drugs, exploitation and some of the sexiest, most scandalous, most powerful and sometimes most forbidden men. They all want to own her, even at the cost of her own soul. Tyler is exposed to a side of the industry that she never thought existed and soon has a few dirty little secrets of her own.

It's Worth a Look.......2007-07-07
The story line was interesting but redundant at times. Also, although I throughly enjoyed the story as a whole, the writing style was a bit odd at times.
The ride of your life tale.......2007-04-13
I was drawn in Ms Kings book from the moment I started reading. I felt like I was a part of the book. I just didn't want it to end. I had the time of my life reading this book.
Good Read.......2007-03-20
A little slow at the beginning but when things picked up, I could not put the book down. I was happy to see how much Tyler matured and I can't wait to read the Hooker to Housewife.
MSKIKI425.......2006-12-04
THIS STORY INTRODUCES TYLER BLAKE. HER MOTHER RAISES HER WITH THE SELF IMAGE THAT SHE IS A PRINCESS AND SHOULD GROW UP TO MARRY A RICH MAN. HER MOTHER BASICALLY LEFT HER FATHER FOR A MAN THAT COULD PROVIDE THEM WITH THAT LAVISH LIFESTYLE. THE STORY TAKES YOU ALONG WITH TYLER AS SHE GROWS UP WITH EACH PAGE TURNED. SHE GOES THROUGH PLENTY OF BOYFRIENDS BUT NEVER REALLY ABLE TO ESTABLISH REAL LOVE WITH ANY. RUNNING FROM A BAD RELATIONSHIP TO A WORSE ONE. TYLER STRUGGLES TO FIND WHO SHE IS. WHILE HER PARENTS ARE CONCERNED WITH THEIR OWN AFFAIRS AND NOT REALLY GIVING HER THE ATTENTION SHE NEEDS THEY FELL TO REALIZE ALL THE THINGS GOING ON WITH HER UNTIL ITS TOO LATE! THIS BOOK WAS SO HARD TO PUT DOWN....THERE WAS SO MUCH DRAMA ON EACH PAGE. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE BOOK WAS THE MESSAGE IN IT. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT FROM IT.
I wonder how true to life..........2006-08-18
There was just something about this book that I did not like and I think I've figured out what it is... This is like a "self-help" book with a hypocritical main character. Tyler Blake was just completely AND totally screwed up. I wish the author hadn't told us that this was "loosely" based on her life.
That immediately made me wonder how true to life this story was/is. Tyler was a really messed up girl/woman because she kept making stupid decision after stupid decision after stupid decision AFTER stupid decision!! It's like she never learned anything. And she kept making excuses and it really sounded like the author was trying to justify her reason for writing this book that was based "loosely" on her life.
I started to give this book only "2" stars but gave it three because I really might pick this book for my book club. We could easily have a weekend discussion based on the character of Tyler and the men that she chooses to be with. The character/author writing was just filled with so many contradictions that it made reading this book very frustrating! But I guess that is what was meant to be conveyed. Tyler just really pissed me off and I was like "what is this woman going to do next"?
Ah well...

Book Description
In 2005 porn reached epidemic proportions and affected almost everyone. This book is about Craig Gross, a young pastor helping those inside the world of porn, and the stories, insights, and secrets he’s learning on his journey.
Customer Reviews:
Open-minded, Mature and In Your Face: A Real Page-Turner.......2007-05-16
This is a book that doesn't judge or criticize you for looking at porn. Many of us have done it when we were young: Found Dad's porn collection somewhere; Watched (or even been caught) watching porn on the internet. This book gives you respect. Respect in opening up the industry in a no-holds-barred, completely real with real-life experiences kind of way. It shows its not a fairy-tale lifestyle (not that we thought it was), but its enough to think: Do I want to get my pleasure from other people's pain? Examples on how porn has screwed up people's lives (the actors, as well as the viewers at home) makes you think twice.
Your questions will be answered.
Revolutionary!.......2006-07-05
The information in this book changed my life! This is far more than a "how to" guide for resisting the poison that is porn. The telling of the real life interactions and infiltration of the porn industry with the love of Christ by Craig Gross and company will change your heart and forever alter the way you view this problem.
Hope for the hurting, or more of the same old thing?.......2006-05-10
I first heard about the XXXChurch website a couple of years ago. It looked like an edgy idea by a young Christian man called to stand against porn in the Church. I applauded his courage for confronting the issue head-on, and liked that he leavened his stand with some humor. "Dirty Little Secret" is from Craig Gross, the founder of this organization. As the title suggests, porn is something the Church sweeps under the narthex rug. Since I wage my own battle against self-medication, I was interested in what he had to say.
"Dirty Little Secret" isn't bad. The author is passionately against porn, but not in a judgmental or holier-than-thou way. He and his cohorts set up booths at porn conventions to provide a way out for those who produce and act in adult movies. They also seek to help church leaders deal with their usage, since it has become almost epidemic in the pastoral community. That kind of "grace with teeth" is better than the legalistic and shame-based approach of most churches (when they aren't in denial, that is).
However, despite the author's good intentions, books like this one have a fatal flaw. They are big on showcasing porn's worst-case consequences, but short on providing solid ways of prevention and adequate solutions for addicts (or even dabblers). Like in war, no one gets into porn with the goal of becoming a casualty. Casual indulgers become blase after years of not even coming close to experiencing the hell of a raging porn addict. The more insidious consequences of dabbling, such as subtle effects on dating or marriage relations, should've merited more exploration. It seems that because porn is so easy to get (especially with the advent of the Internet), prevention has been abandoned in favor of focusing on treatment. The author discusses intensive isolation therapy, counseling, and accountability via friends and/or software. But like Mr. Gross, I've seen this stuff fail over and over again. At least he's honest about the shortcomings of these methods.
Is there hope for those trapped in porn? My adventures in sanctification have included counseling, doing ministry, healing services, memorizing Scripture, accountability, small groups, reading tons of books, and even dating/courting. The result? I'm not mired in addiction, and I have grown as a Christian (at least I hope so). However, the ugly truth about focusing on methods is that once you're done with them (or they are done with you), you're still you. If your Achilles heel(s) remain the same, then it's easy to become discouraged and tempted to retreat into familiar ways of medicating. What's worse, the Church will often let you go on your merry way. My experience with church leadership is that as a man, you are an asset as long as you have it "together." But once you're struggles are revealed and you are working through brokenness, you're a liability. Usually you get segregated from the "healthy" Christians and thrown into a recovery group, where the blind lead the blind and true healing is an ever-elusive goal. Some tout marriage as both a preventative and a solution. But Christian women get so freaked out about any hint of porn usage in one's past (never mind the present) that they aren't much help. However, I digress.
I'm reminded of the story Jesus told about casting out a demon. The demon wanders through dry places, and decides to return to the person it was ejected from. The creature finds its old home swept and in order. But nothing of substance is there to hinder its return, and it moves back in with seven other demons more vile than itself. In the end, the person is worse off than before. Yes, "Dirty Little Secret" shows that the "demon" of porn is bad. But there's not much about shaping one's character to avoid it, or how to fill the demon's old home in a more sanctified manner.
Ultimately, navel-gazing and bullet-point methods haven't worked for me or anyone else that I know of. Indeed, focusing on the sin and white-knuckling it may provide short-term "victory." But in the end this approach is an exercise in failure. Strugglers may need to simply hit bottom like the Prodigal Son, and then get picked up and put back together by a supportive community - if one can be found. For the long-term, perhaps an intense interpersonal ministry that gets our juices flowing in the direction of God and others (versus ourselves and our pet sin) is a solution. I hope that the search for healing is itself half of the battle, and that a merciful God will gird up his garment and run to meet us with love and succor. But so far I'm discouraged with how the Church deals with its more obviously wounded members.
At any rate, I salute "Dirty Little Secret" for spotlighting the problem of porn in the Church. I'm also impressed with the XXXChurch's ministry to those folks in the adult film industry. But I'm skeptical about the solutions it puts forth for the user of porn, whether casually or addictively. We've become immune to way-out cautionary tales and frustrated with tired old methodologies that make us "acceptable" but don't provide true change. A deeper way in Christ is needed, and I pray that the author perseveres toward that end in his ministry. So for now, I can only give a guarded, but hopeful, recommendation for "Dirty Little Secret."

There aren't many "dirty secrets" in this addictively readable book. Really, it's a compendium of fun facts about horrors arranged in bite-size prose bits and written under the influence of lead author Dunnigan's favorite book, Will Cuppy's irreverent historical classic The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody. The minichapters have titles like "Killer Vegetables and the Farts from Hell" (at 20,000 feet, gas caused by eating cabbages expanded, killing airmen). Did you know that every single German spy who infiltrated England became an Allied double agent? That MacArthur, Churchill, and Roosevelt all descended from one Sarah Belcher of Taunton, Massachusetts? That World War II killed about 100 million, or five percent of humanity? That a Russian was 100 times likelier to die than an American? (A USSR boy born in 1923 had an eighty-percent chance of dying by 1945.) We learn the origin of the term "rock & roll" (all weapons firing on automatic), the superiority or stupidity of tracer bullets, Göring's air-war policy, and U.S. troop-replacement policy. Some will argue with this book's rather simple answers to complex questions--was Chamberlain smart to cave to Hitler in the Munich pact because it bought a year to build planes and invent radar, which won the Battle of Britain? Other books come to different conclusions, but few so ably honor the master of snappy history, Will Cuppy. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
Dirty Little Secrets of World War II exposes the dark, irreverent, misunderstood, and often tragicomic aspects of military operations during World War II, many of them virtually unknown even to military buffs. Like its successful predecessor, Dirty Little Secrets, Dunnigan and Nofi's new book vividly brings to life all theaters and participants of the war. Revelations include:
- The real death count for the war, and why it has never been previously released.
- The "new age" general who refused to smoke or drink, who lived on a vitamin-enriched diet, who opposed animal experimentation, and who regularly consulted his astrologer.
- How equipment developed for the war led to such modern high-tech innovations as "smart bombs," electronic warfare, and nuclear missles.
- The lackadaisical relationship between Germany and Japan throughout the war.
- Tricky bits of information about the lingering effects of the war -- like the thousands of live shells and mines that are still buried in Europe and off the East Coast of America.
Customer Reviews:
More trivia than secrets.......2007-08-05
This book is best suited for the history buff, as it contains pages (and pages, and pages, and pages) of world war 2 trivia. Unfortunately, the so called "Dirty Little Secrets" are few and far between. The lay reader will lose interest as the signal-to-noise ratio for the non-afficianado is just too low.
Good to go!.......2005-08-19
I am glad to see that the Greatest Generation had as many mistakes and foul ups as we do today. I found this book fascinating and addictive.
Trivia you thought you knew.......2004-02-06
This book is excellent for those who want to supplement their knowledge of World War II with real human stories and analysis of why the war went the way it did.
The way it's written, it can be read at the pace you choose. It's divided into small anecdotes, and can be an excellent bathroom reader.
Lots of Research Poorly Written.......2003-12-11
I really enjoyed the book and I think a great deal of time went into its research; however, I think it was a bit substandard in form. Much to much attention is spent on conveying meaningless statistics. Moreover, there are a number of grammatical errors, especially dangling prepositions.
The factor that removed it from the four star range for me, was the inherent conflict with the following:
On page 330 the authors write: "While it is widely known that the submarine was crucial in destroying Japan's merchant marine during the Pacific war, it [is] often overlooked that U.S. subs sank only 45 percent of enemy merchant shipping. Aircraft accounted for most of the rest."
However, on page 338 our authors state: "The decisive weapon in the war against Japan was the submarine." The Authors then present a table showing that submarines accounted for 55% of Japanese merchant shipping loss while aircraft only account for 33%.
These assertions of fact cannot coexist. Which is true?! I shall always wonder.
Entertaining collection of odd WWII facts.......2003-03-26
The US army actually had more ships than the US navy? Polish cavalry never actually fought German tanks? These and other tidbits of historical trivia are compiled in this book. Ranging from odd facts such as the number of inkstamps used by Nazi Germany to the debunking of popular myth like the supposed failure of the Maginot Line, this tome is a good addition for the library of any WWII buff.
