Book Description
In this hilarious and dead-on accurate guide to the world of men and dogs, were’re introduced to the concept of Pack Status Personality. In addition to the totally misunderstood Alphas, we meet Betas, Leglifters, Junkyard Dogs, Perpetual Puppies, and more. We learn where they live and work, what they drive, and how they dress, all based on the “preinstalled operating system” that comes with each PSP. Far from the expected male-bashing, this outrageously funny book even explains why home improvement projects can cause male impotence! If you’re a woman and have a discernable pulse, YOU NEED THIS BOOK. If you’re a guy, ignore the author’s warnings and read it anyhow…

Men and dogs: Why we love them both and how alike they really are........2007-04-04
This book simply ROCKS. It is a book all women above the age of 18 should read. As women, we all understand on some level the reason we are attracted to some men and not to others. This book simply puts those thoughts into a neat, sensible and funny theory about men and their pack order.
Reading this book, I found myself thinking of all of the men that I have known and dated, and all of them fit one of the author's pack status personalities. The mix of biology, humor and good relationship advice kept me glued to this book for hours.
This book isn't about getting laid quicker, or figuring out the male psyche. It does, however, give a new and interesting perspective on why men behave they do and how we interact with them. Alpha males aren't the only pack order personalities out there. Some men are great husbands and others are great lovers. There are ancient and instinctive reasons for this, and I loved reading about the biology behind love and attraction.
Funniest book I've read in quite a while!.......2007-03-31
Whether you're looking for the right man or already found one this is a great read - It is wickedly funny & interesting at the same time. Definitely worth the price. Warning: If you lend it to someone you won't get it back :)
A good FUN read, and you'll understand men!.......2007-03-28
First I've got to admit I'm one of those "Y" types the author advises not to read this book. But then, being your basic "Y" type, I don't follow directions all that well, so I read it. That was partly in self-defense, after listening to Patricia laugh so much while she read it, and then announcing I'm a sentinel.
This book is a really fun read. It is written in a humorous, almost conversational, style that both made me laugh and made it difficult to put down. Whether you agree with what the author says or not, if you simply like to read for the sheer pleasure of the written word, this is a book for you.
It is fun, and may be partly tongue-in-cheek, but the premise makes sense; men, like dogs and their ancestors the wolves, are pack hunting predators. There must be organization and positions within the pack -- different jobs -- to make the hunt successful. This may not be so crucial in the modern world, but we spent a few hundred thousand years needing to hunt to survive. The characteristics that make up the positions are as deep in our nature as the "flight or fight" response or the need for food and shelter.
Here are a few things you'll learn: guys who say they are Alpha almost always aren't; why the neighbors always say "but he was such a nice, quiet guy"; how to recognize perpetual puppies, retrievers and junkyard dogs by their wardrobe and habitat, and why too much testosterone is not a Good Thing.
For us guys, this book offers the perfect alibi; "I can't help it, it's in my genes." For women, this book is like an Audubon Society Field Guide; yes, you can recognize a guy's PSP after you read this book.
You can save the chapter on biochemistry until the end but don't skip it entirely. I've check some of the information about genes and biochemistry on the Internet, and while the author assures us she didn't do any research, everything I checked is right. Maybe Francis Crick was right; psychologists of the future will be biochemists.
Oh, and buy it from Amazon; you can get free shipping! I bought it from the publisher and it cost $8.50 more!
Now, who's going to write the book to help us understand women?
EXTRA! EXTRA! A "MUST READ" TWO THUMBS UP!.......2007-03-24
OK, so it was never my intention to read this book. Let's face it, in the forward the author actually tells us men not to read the book. Being smarter than the average bear I knew this was a sneaky way to get us men to READ THE BOOK and normally I wouldn't have fallen for it(obviously, the author has some devilishly smart advisers helping her with this). But my wife had purchased the book and I needed to implement my own Bush Doctrine (For you liberals out there that means I needed to read the book before my wife did and put it into action against me).
It turns out this is a great book. I've read it 3 times now. The first time I read it I laughed so hard and so often I almost peed my pants. I ended up reading the second half of the book in the washroom just in case. Half way thru the book the first time I knew I would need to read it again because all my laughing was getting in the way of my note taking. Seriously, if my wife was going to read this stuff I needed to bone up on my knowledge.
This author is not only smart as hell and a great researcher, she's informed and funny too. I'm not going to get into all the terminology she uses (Retrievers can do that).....but she's bang on right and she knows it.
So my recommendation is going to be for everyone to purchase this book and actually read it. And I mean everyone.....8 to 80, blind, drunk or crazy......if you can read you need to own this book.
Thank you very much and have a nice day.
My recommendation: Read this book!.......2007-03-18
The author takes a very funny tongue-in-cheek approach to understanding why men are the way they are. The first third of the book provides an easy to understand and eye-opening overview of the genetic and brain chemistry factors that influence male behavior. The notion here is that men are predisposed or "hard-wired" to act in certain ways and that no amount of conditioning is going to change that underlying predisposition.
The second two-thirds of the book provides what is essentially a field guide to men, the heuristic for which is the concept of "Pack Status Personality" (PSP). The PSP framework borrows concepts and terminology from the worlds of dog breeding and wolf research and applies them to men, which makes learning about what makes men tick understandable and fun. Each PSP is described in terms of its brain chemistry, dominant personality traits, behaviors, grooming, and sex habits, all in an effort to identify the qualities that would make its constituent men a good mate for the right woman.
I recommend this book without reservation for women who have yet to find their ideal mate - as well as for women to understand better the mates they have already found. I also recommend it for us men (yup, and I am a Retriever) who would like a very entertaining and testosterone-free way of understanding the men who influence the world in which we live. Finally, I will give a copy of this book to my daughter when she reaches the age at which men become a serious preoccupation and pursuit, and I suggest everyone else do so as well.

Book Description
“The one thing you should know about me is this: I’m the consummate Good Girl. . .”
Ellie Winters is dependable and loyal and has a near-phobic aversion to conflict. But as her thirtieth birthday looms ever closer, she starts to feel like she’s lost the instruction manual to her life. She has just broken up with her boring boyfriend, despises her job, and is the last of her high school friends to remain single. Worse, her dysfunctional family is driving her nuts, and she’s somehow become enslaved to her demanding pet pug Sally, who she suspects is the reincarnation of Pol Pot.
One night, after a botched attempt to color her hair at home, Ellie rushes to the drugstore for emergency bleach, Sally in tow. Sally is accosted by a smitten canine admirer . . . but it’s the dog’s owner who captures Ellie’s attention. Television news anchor Ted Langston is witty, intriguing, and sexy. The only catch? He’s twice her age--and the only man on the planet who isn’t interested in dating a younger woman. And no one, from Ellie’s best friends to Ted’s ex-wife, wants to see them get together.

Sweet and romantic, but predictable, and a bit superficial!.......2007-02-08
I purchased the book because I am an unmarried litigator "pushing 30," so the theme of the story is so appealing. But, although this a definitely a feel good story, it is not as good as I thought that it would be. The story is clear, fun, and sweet, and the romantic scenes are written in a very tender and touching manner. But the real motivations of the characters aren't there. There really has to be so much more to say about two people with a 23 year age difference falling in love, and with Elli's conflict-aversion. My preference, as a reader, would be for a story that digs deeper into those issues. I almost stopped reading at the beginning because the writing seemed to superficial, but the story got a lot better, and I wanted to spend all day reading it to see how it turned out. I agree with some other reviewers that the story is not completely wrapped up at the end, but I still liked it, and rooted for the unlikely lovers.
Very disappointing.......2006-11-09
This book could have been written by a high school student-- the plot was *totally* predictable, the characters underdeveloped and stereotyped, the dialogue lame. It also had a pretentious quality that was hard to stomach. Very unsatisfying, even for a light beach read.
A Fun Read.......2006-06-29
From the first page the book drew me in and I read it in one sitting. The characters were well written and came to life on the pages. I loved Ellie & Ted's first date, it was laugh out loud funny and so well written. Add the dysfunctional family, friends & enemies, and a pug named Sally and you have a fabulous book that has me searching out Whitney Gaskell's other books.
cute but predictable.......2006-04-11
This book was typical of the genre, but still fun to read. I loved her take on the May-December romance, and also liked the relationship Ellie had with her brother (written very realistically). One thing that got me was how does a blonding kit turn light brown hair pink? My hairstylist friend harped on that bit for days on end. Fact checking is your friend you know. Also, why didn't Ellie's law office nemesis not get her comeuppance? If you're going to paint such an evil antagonist, the reader usually wants to see them get what's coming to them.
Still, not a bad way to pass a rainy day or two.
A-Mazing Book.......2006-01-26
I found this book accidentally while I was looking for another novel to read and I ended up getting both and regretting that purchase and loving this one! It really pulls you into all of her emotions and you feel almost protective of her because she reminds you of yourself, and the things you wish you could do to the people who have wronged you in life. I felt bad when she felt bad, I laughed when she joked, I cried when she was hurt and I cheered when she FINALLY stood up for herself! I recommend this book to anyone out there who feels they are the "Consummate Good Girl".

"This book is terrific...I promise you, short of getting on a dog sled, traveling into the darkness, and running the Iditarod yourself, this will be the next best thing to being there."--Mitch Albom, Detroit Free Press Blinding Blizzards. Freezing wind. Paralyzingly cold temperatures. The 1,100-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race is an annual marathan run from Anchorage to Nome across the nation's most forbidding and dangerous territory. Book Description
Bestselling author Connie May Fowler tells her own extraordinary story for the first time–the harrowing years of her childhood followed by the abusive relationship she endured as a young woman–and how the unconditional love of her dog helped her escape her physical and emotional bonds.
Before Women Had Wings, Connie May Fowler’s award-winning and bestselling fictional account of domestic abuse, touched thousands. In this piercing memoir, Fowler chronicles the emotional battery and physical abuse that marked her own passage to adulthood. She draws a searing portrait of growing up with her manipulative and needy mother, a woman unable to give the love and comfort every child has a right to expect.
And then, as a young woman, Fowler found herself involved with a man whose behavior disturbingly echoed her mother’s. The man she lived with alternately displayed a desperate need for her or rejected her as if she were worse than useless. With heart-wrenching candor, Fowler records the abuse she suffered at his hands, from his constant attempts to undermine her self- confidence to his acts of brutal physical violence.
The unconditional love Fowler longed for finally came–in the shape of an adoring Labrador puppy named Kateland. With Katie at her side, she was able to withstand her mistreatment and the crushing weight of her childhood and, miraculously, managed to create a small refuge from the horrors that surrounded her. This is the story of her decision to end the years of mistreatment and even to open her life to a new, gentle man, whose love and understanding helped to transform her.
Well known for her fiction and her work with victims of domestic abuse, Fowler now offers a strong helping hand to women everywhere in this startling, revealing, and ultimately inspiring memoir.

Customer Reviews:
A book that can change your life.......2006-05-29
There's no question Connie May Fowler is a gifted story teller and extremely talented writer. Some passages are so searing and full of truth I've gasped when reading them. Unfortunately, the story she tells here is not fiction. I won't go into the plot because other reviewers have.
But I will say that this book will open up the eyes of readers who wonder why rape and domestic violence can damage people so deeply. In telling her story, Fowler goes further - also showing how 'teasing' and discrimination against someone because of the appearance of their face can cause deep and life-lasting scars. So far, the latter is a problem barely touched on by authors and psychologists.
Read this book with an open mind, and you'll find her story underscores how cruelty, shaming and bullying can almost blow out the flame of a promising human being before she even gets a chance to realize her own talent.
Conversely, this book demonstrates how kindness and compassion can help a suffering soul survive and even bloom.
Fowler is never pitiful and pathetic, and even when the most degrading acts are done to her, she remains a person with dignity.
Free from cruelty and shame at last and embraced by love, the real Connie Fowler emerges in the end.
extraordinary recounting of abuse, despair, ultimate triumph.......2003-04-13
When you get right down to it, authors like Connie May Fowler are not much different than the rest of us. Fowler bears the scars of a horrific childhood and early adulthood, one strewn with the wreckage of a shattered self-image fueled by the alcoholic abuse of her mother and the degradation of a hideous relationship with an older man. She, as have many of her readers, has suffered through despair thick enough to reduce her to attempted suicide and has faced the depths of self-abdication so profound that she began to absorb the very evil identity her tormented partner imposed on her.
What makes Fowler different from us, however, is language. In her hands, words make anguish palpable, sadness tangible, struggle imperative. As an author, Fowler is able to make sense of her life, and, in so doing, help us make sense of ours. "When Katie Wakes" may well be the most brutally coarse and ugly memoir you will ever read, but, at the same time, one of the most beautiful and impassioned pleas for individual integrity and indomitability ever composed. It is nothing less than a masterpiece.
Though Ms. Fowler credits her adoption of a loyal and loving dog, Katie, as the symbolic act of reclamation and reaffirmation of life, she sells herself far short. The grandchild and child of abused women, the child Fowler becomes the target of her drunken mother's rage. The Fowler children become adept actors, hiding the shame of family disgrace and brutality under the veneer of achievement. Keeping verbal assaults invisble, preventing others from recognizing the constant physical beatings absorbed by Mama, Connie's family life resembled "smoke and mirrors, deception and shame." A "wall of silence" shrouded suffering. As a child, Connie received sustenance from words and books, and her resultant triumph as an adult vindicates her choice. Her older sister, however, absorbs and internalizes the viciousness of her home, and, consequently, develops anorexia as an adult.
In a remarkable self-portrait, Fowler describes a wretched adult woman, unloved, unlovable, disgusting and repulsive. Her self-hatred is "untainted and unhinged." She believes herself "so ugly" that only an abusive, impotent, failed radio celebrity would be willing to love her. Yet, there is not a single note of self-pity in this wrenching memoir. Fowler reminds us that her mother's life, obliterated from a childhood rape, transcends her own in loss. Mama was "an angry woman who believed life had let her down. And it had." From disappointment to the target of her own husband's physical abuse, Fowler's mother recirculates and intensfies the pain, deliberately deflecting it on her children.
As a young woman, Fowler has not escaped her mother's imprint. Indeed, her chosen partner encapsulates her mother's jagged opinion. Tense is irrelevant when Fowler hears herself described as "stupid," or "an ungrateful whore," or a "lousy excuse" of a lover or daughter. When she hears her mother decry her existence, "I wish...I had died the day you were born," Fowler must come to grips with an essential life choice: descent into emotional self-immolation or ascent into a struggle for life and affirmation.
"When Katie Wakes" bravely portrays Fowler's battle for identity and wholeness. Her steadfast determination to "take responsibility for my own happiness, for my own sense of self-worth" is the best medicine for any person struggling to make sense of inner turmoil and despair. When she proclaims her need to discover "what my placer in the world should be," she speaks for any person on the cusp of a life-altering decision searching for the courage to embrace life's potential. This emotion-laden memoir is eloquent testimony to the ability of one person to wrestle life from death, hope from despair, the future from the past.
An insightful journey into the mind of a battered woman........2003-04-05
Connie May Fowler's, "When Katie Wakes" is masterful glimpse into the soul of a battered women. I could not put this book down once I started and I finished it in an afternoon. A heartfelt account of one women's journey from both inner and outer torments to wakefulness and a sort of freedom, I would recommend this book to anyone. Fowler's easy writing style opens the door for us to descend easily into the hell that is home to the battered woman. Often wondering exactly what is was that kept a woman from mentally walking away from her abuser when she could physically do so, Fowler's insight has put the answer into perspective and I will never have to ask that question again.
AN AWAKENING FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE.......2002-05-30
READING THIS BOOK WAS EMOTIONALLY DRAINING. THE ABUSE CONNIE WENT THROUGH BOTH FROM HER PARENTS & THEN HER OLDER LOVER WAS UNBELIEVABLE. KATIE(CONNIE'S LOVABLE DOG) GOT HER THROUGH SOME DIFFICULT TIMES. KATIE WAS LOYAL TO CONNIE UNTIL THE END. CONNIE WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN BECAUSE SHE HAD KATIE TO FALL BACK ON. THANK GOD A GOOD MAN LIKE MIKA CAME ALONG. THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ABUSE VICTIMS. GOD BLESS KATIE FOR THE SUPPORT SHE GAVE CONNIE & GOD BLESS CONNIE FOR SEEING A BETTER LIGHT & GETTING OUT OF HER HORRIBLE SITUATION.
A most fulfilling memoir........2002-04-01
I read this book immediately after reading Fowler's "Before Women Had Wings". "When Katie Wakes" flowed quite smoothly from "Wings" and clarified some of the author's real-life struggles that were revealed in "Wings". A terrific, yet heartbreaking story she tells in "When Katie Wakes". I couldn't put this book down. A disturbing story though, in that it took me until the end of the book to realize why Fowler couldn't find the inner strength to leave such an abusive, dangerous and destructive lover. A must-read for those who enjoy a revealing and instructive story on the agonies of an abusive childhood and the devastation it can wreak.

Life Changing Book! .......2006-03-19
"It's either fate or fake; it's either complete destiny or complete disaster"
So writes Kevin in this amazing book! With each turn of the page my heart took me back to those times of brokeness. I have spent much of my life in empty relationships that I thought would get better in time. I was overwhelmed as I begin to read this book and realize that I am one of the woman that Kevin wrote this for.
I have not been to church in a very longtime and would not consider myself a Christian. However, I do feel a sense that God has spoken to me in some way through this book. My life has been an incomplete puzzle in many ways. I have looked for the missing pieces through sex and quite frankly cheap relationships. In "All Men Are Not Pigs" I have found those missing pieces once again.
Well worth reading!.......2005-09-27
The author readily admits that although he was raised in a religious home and attended Bible training, he took another dating road for a while. Then a phrase came to him: Restore the glory back to the woman."
His chapter titles really say it all, and his easy-to-understand thoughts can be implemented by anyone in a relationships or seeking "Mr. Right. Using Bible verses throughout to make a point, he especially references that the 31 Chapters of Proverbs (one for every day of the month) cover most things related to wisdom. He also breaks down in a most interesting way 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, "What Is Love" so often used at wedding.
Chapter 1: The Glory of the Woman: A woman's intuition is like a multiple choice test. She just has to select the right answer from the many options. He encouraged women to seek like-minded men to date.
Chapter 2: Who Do Men Cheat explores pornography's affect on men and relationships and how it promotes lying. "Thoughts provoke action," the author says, and encourages women to both watch a man's deeds along with listening to his words as men can easily say, "I love you."
Women find it harder to be dishonest about love because her emotions become her word.
Chapter 6: Do Feelings Dictate Love? The author says there is no such thing as "I'm not in the mood" with men -- and if you hear that, say hello to "Mr. Cheater."
Some other strong statements are:
_ Your unfaithful spouse is brewing the coffee, and you need to wake up to it.
_ Forgiveness does not always require reconciliation
_ Feelings or emotions never accompany wisdom or good sense.
_ You always hear that "opposites attract," but you have never heard for how long.
This book helps establish the criteria for a good mate. True wisdom, he says, is the wisdom understood with the heart, not just the mind.
Armchair Interviews says: In All Men Are Not Pigs, the author says that every woman's soul is alike, whether beautiful or plain -- and all deserve to be treated like they are beautiful in the eyes of the beholder. He encourages women to use their wisdom and wait for the right mate who fits the criteria in this book.
Every woman should have this book!.......2005-07-20
I love this book! Kevin Sussman tells you the whole truth and nothing but the truth about men and the diffence between the "nice guys" and the "bad guys". The one thing about this book is that you have to keep an open mind and not be offended by what he is saying. Alot of the time he is coming from a moral and religious standpoint so if your not a religious person don't be scared just bare with it and understand his logic because his words are truly enlightening. His words makes person aware of what they should be looking for in man and how a woman should love and respect herself. This book has changed my life for the better and I hope this review can encourage more people to buy it. I also want to contact Kevin and thank him so if you are out there? THANK YOU!
Inspirational.......2005-06-09
Finally!! An author who sees things from all angles of what a
relationship should consist of. This book takes us on a journey into the woman's
mind while revealing all the secrets of men. The funny part is that it
is written by a man. It covers all viewpoints, from religious to modern
day. This is a must read book for women who are just looking for the
truth -- It gives it to you straight and more!

Book Description
Lili Wright is a thirty-something woman on the emotional lam. Faced with a choice between two men--Stuart, the steady veterinarian, and Peter, the dreamy writer--she climbs into her car and leaves them both behind.
With only a borrowed dog named Brando for company and a map of twelve states in her pocket, Lili sets out on a road trip, hoping that by setting herself in motion she will find a way to settle down. Charting a course from Cadillac Mountain in Maine to the faded glory of Key West, Florida, she camps out on beaches and crashes on couches, in sketchy motels and even in a cop's trailer. She travels not only south, but also back in time, trying to figure out why previous relationships with a Nantucket waiter, a French tennis clown, a Utah ski bum, and others flared and fizzled.
Along the way, Lili meets a string of unlikely gurus, including a well-worn shrimper, a vegan astrologer, and even a woman who marries herself. These and other unassuming strangers offer offbeat wisdom and guidance as Lili struggles to understand the nature of love, the voodoo of sex, and how couples can settle down without settling for. Between adventures, Lili tackles tough questions: Why does everything love touches turn risky? Does staying with the same person mean staying the same? Where does love come from, and where does it go? By journey’s end, this restless traveler begins to see how she can share her life with just one other person, and how love, like water, can make a body float.
Lili Wright’s engaging memoir from the road updates the tradition of the picaresque traveler’s tale. With unflinching honesty and refreshing wit, she captures the torn emotions, comic misfires, and inevitable trade-offs felt by young people everywhere.

Learning to Float.......2003-10-13
I started reading this book after I found it on the Barnes and Noble book club list. I just got done reading a very depressing book and I was in the mood for something light and happy and that is just what I found. Lili Wright has an awesome writting style that reminds me of one of my favorite shows, Sex and the City. Lili reveals her past relationship flaws and insecurities she has in order to find more about herlself and about love. She travels to all the places that she spent time with past flames and doing this she feels she will gain closure. This just creates more confussion and she realizes she needs to find out about herself and not about the past men in her life. I enjoyed this book but at times her life seemed a little too much like a soap opera. Read this book if your in the mood for a crazy romantic tale but I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who doesn't like a lot of drama. I would give this book 3 stars.
Saga of a [woman in moral decline].......2003-05-18
What begins as a promising self-study lapses into old war stories of late-teen bed hopping, drugs, and aimless amorality. Only a puerile mind could care about how Lili gets herpes and loses her self-respect.
An interesting experience.......2002-10-28
For anyone who has ever asked questions about the way they live their life, especially in relation to others, this is a book to explore. Following Lili Wright as she examines the world inside and outside herself, you can feel the learning and growing amid the struggling. As one who struggles while learning and growing, especially when looking at the world from the inside-out, I appreciated her honesty and candor about her experiences.
Inspirational Journey.......2002-10-07
When I picked up this book at a little bookstore at the beach, I was on a week-long vacation from a job I disliked and trying both to relax and to do some soul-searching. As Lili says, there are those people who have their personal lives in order and whose professional lives are a mess and those whose professional lives are in order but their personal lives are a mess. I had always lived in the second camp - but, at the time, I was facing chaos in my professional life and needed a break from reality.
From the moment I started reading "Learning to Float," I literally could not put it down. Lili speaks to readers like an old friend - airing her dirty laundry and taking us through the painful, yet liberating, process of trying to figure out what she needs to do to be happy.
"Learning to Float" is a deeply personal book. Yet, for others who are facing - or have ever faced - a time in life when we have to reassess our priorities and figure out what we need to do next, "Learning to Float" reassures us that we are not alone and provides inspiration that we, too, can find our way.
Learning to Float.......2002-08-31
Wonderful! Wonderful, Wonderful! This is a rare book that will occupy your thoughts for days and touch every emotion! I found myself laughing out loud quite often and crying as well, You may even see yourself in this book at times! Lili is an exceptional storyteller! So much so that I didn't want the book to end. She will take you away with her on a soul searching journey that will leave you wanting more. Run don't walk to get this book!

LAUGH, CRY, RECOGNIZE.......2002-08-21
This "classic" book, revered and collected by so many, by the great humorist and artist. His drawings and "cartoons" hold a contemporary appeal. Warming our hearts, bringing to mind life situations, making us laugh. And LAUGHTER AND AMUSEMENT, regardless of a book's origins, makes it a great edition to any library and a rewarding gift.
one of the best classic Thurber collections I have ever read.......1997-12-06
Men women and Dogs is a crowd pleaser for the entire family. Everyone of all ages will appreciate the wit and humor of Mr. Thurbers cartoons.
