For those children of the King of Kings!.......2007-04-26
If you have a "little princess" in your home, you have to read this book. I laughed so hard at little Gigi and her "misunderstanding" that being a little princess meant that she was really royalty, when in fact Walsh drives home that point that all God's children are royalty, heirs to the throne and children of the King of Kings! Gigi is a mess, but what a fun way to bring home this concept to children. With the help of her cat Lord Fluffy and her loyal subject and friend Frances, Gigi comes to the self-awareness that life is about more than just her - and the great news is that Gigi learns that she truly is royalty, but not in a kingdom that will rust and be destroyed, but rather in an eternal Kingdom where she will reign forever!
Great read for boys and girls - but your little princess will especially love this book!
Excellent Story!.......2007-04-09
This is a great book!!! My daughter loves all of the Gigi books, but this is her favorite so far. After stating the fact that we are all children of the King of Kings at the end, it doesn't go into any details of what that means. I think this makes it even better because it allows us to have conversations with our children. My princess & I have had many great bedtime talks about this, and I love it! The book is very funny. Gigi is full of herself, but it is also a great underlying lesson about pride. Her bubble gets burst when she discovers she is indeed NOT the only princess! GREAT BOOK! Buy it!
Don't bother!.......2007-01-11
I was disappointed with the content. The pictures are delightful, and for that reason only, it got 2 stars. I found the story line thin, when in fact, the truth that we are ALL children of the King is really quite profound. Gigi is completely absorbed with herself - not a worthy role model. This is not because we don't suffer the same, but because she does not move from that position and it is not addressed or reinforced by anyone else in her life. Her father abdicates from the discussion, her mother gives her a one liner and her friend she considers her "subject". I thought Gigi was quite horrid!
Daughter loves it.......2006-07-02
My daughter loves this book and wants us to read it to her all the time before bed.
Can't wait to read the ending...........2005-12-28
My 4-year-old daughter received this book - it was her gift she opened on Christmas eve. We sat by the lighted Christmas tree and fire and she settled into my lap for a goodread. The illustrations ARE precious, as other reviewers have said. The story started off beautifully - very believable for a little girl. We got to the part about "the King" and I got intrigued as to how the writer would explain this - then the book ended. It just ENDED. No further explanation, no further story. Just a few more pages would have turned this almost good book into possibly a great book. I am sad that it didn't make it - I had high hopes. Perhaps you might want to check it out from the library first to see what I mean. :( (I did give it 2 stars because of the sweet illustration and the beginnings of a good book.)

<>“Dear PHP,
It’s over between us. You can keep the kitchen sink, but I want my MVC.
With TurboGears, I was able to shed the most heinous FileMaker Pro legacy ‘solution’ imaginable. It has relationships based on fields that change frequently, causing ‘disappearing data.’ I replaced it with an easy to maintain TurboGears application. Defunkifying and normalizing many years worth of munged data took twice as long as developing the TurboGears’s application itself. TurboGears’s excellent set of tools and best-of-breed approach makes it so easy to build applications quickly.”
—
Isaac Csandl, Manager of Information Technology, Chicago Legal Search, Ltd.
“TurboGears has resulted in significant time savings for rPath. Before it was released, we expected to spend significant time building a Web framework for our rPath Appliance Agent product. TurboGears sharpens our focus on building a quality application; it allows us to provide more value to our customers, rather than reinventing the Web wheel.”
—
Michael K. Johnson, rPath Founding Engineer and Coauthor of Linux Application Development, Second Edition
“I think this is the first time that a Web framework’s functionality has been so obvious.”
—
Bruce Eckel, Author of Thinking in Java and Thinking in C++
“TurboGears helped me build more complex Web applications more quickly and with fewer headaches than any other framework I’ve used. Just like Python itself, it made me more productive with a minimal learning curve.”
—
Quentin Hartman, System Administrator
“TurboGears has changed the way I develop Web applications, from model, to view, to controller. Thanks to the power of TurboGears, I was able to develop the first version of WhatWhat in less than a week of my spare time.”
—
Jonathan LaCour, Development Team Lead, Optio
“TurboGears has provided a way for me to greatly enhance my productivity by realizing the potential of Web-based agile development with Python.”
—
Brandon Goldfedder, Vice President of Engineering, Information Extraction and Transport (IET Inc.), and Author of The Joy of Patterns
“TurboGears really changed the way I schedule project releases: It allows me to deliver them faster and with better quality than when I used to use GUI toolkits.”
—
Jorge Godoy, Owner of G2C Tech Consultoria in Brazil, former Lead Developer for Conectiva documentation team
“With TurboGears, I was able to transition my Python projects into Web applications as easily as possible.”
—
Benjamin T. Hamilton, Software Engineer
“Norwegian-based company Scanmine AS makes extensive use of Python and Turbo-Gears in all parts of its operation. TurboGears makes it a breeze to build highly sophisticated Web 2.0 applications with out-of-the-box features for multiple languages with full Unicode, REST, AJAX, RSS/Atom, and more. This enables Scanmine to put a face on their technology development in a minimal amount of time.
“It has been said that there are as many Web frameworks as there are Python Web programmers. This apparent Web framework fragmentation has long been perceived as a weakness, until TurboGears came along and turned weakness into strength.”
—
Rune Hansen, Senior Systems Designer, Scanmine AS
“TurboGears is a well thought-out framework; the design choices it has made will help you be more productive. TurboGears will give you confidence with its foundation of stable best-of-breed Python components. If you are coming from other languages, consider working in TurboGears and Python to bring fun back into your Web development work.”
—
Jeff Marshall, Partner with FrozenBear
“When we started developing Oprius Foundations with TurboGears, we weren’t sure if it really would help us develop quicker and higher-quality code. After two months, we had a task manager to rival Tada List. After seven months, we had an entire contact management system to compete with the big boys.”
—
Jason Chu, Lead Developer, Oprius Software Inc.
“Conventional programming wisdom states that rewriting any working project from scratch is a bad idea. TurboGears was good enough to convince me to do this anyway, and I have been nothing but thrilled with the results. With TurboGears, I was able to implement an AJAX-based Web site with a nice Web API more easily than I ever thought possible. If you are trying to do either of those in Python, you owe it to yourself to look at this project. Using TurboGears was one of the few times in my programming career where a task was significantly less complicated than I thought possible.”

Customer Reviews:
Frustrating Read.......2007-07-11
I'm working on a Turbogears app. I find it a good framework. The book, however, is frustrating to work with. I rarely have time to read computer books sequentially. I generally jump around trying to find answers to my questions. I'm not finding answers... just partial examples throughout.
For example, I would expect an AJAX example to have all the pieces necessary to implement an AJAX conversation with the file names clearly labeled. I would expect a diagram of how the pieces interact. What I find is little snippets of code without context and no diagrams anywhere in the book.
I think the authors did a reasonable job of explaining Turbogears from their perspective. It was the editors' job to push them to explain things from their audience's perspective. This has the look of a rush job.
Read once for the content, keep open as a reference........2007-06-22
I use this book daily. The book is a great read and walks the reader through many of the complexities of modern web-app development in a clear and easy style. Though there are plenty of gotchas throughout the book, the errata site has most of them nailed cold. The clarity of thought and insight into the rationale behind the design of TurboGears are well worth the price of entry. In addition to covering the current state of TurboGears, the book discusses many of the future options for the project, giving it life beyond the 1.0 version.
I know computer books are obsolete in a short time, but come on........2007-05-24
The information in this book is completely out of date only a few months after it came out. Turbogears 2.0 is going to basically replace every component of TG 1.0. So I would not recommend buying this book unless you want to re-learn everything again when the Turbogears 1.0 codebase is abandoned (it largely already has been as developers move to 2.0 or other frameworks).
Turbogears is a good example of what happens when PR outruns project maturity, and fundamental decisions are abandoned late in a development cycle.
A lot of useful information. A lot of editing problems. .......2007-04-26
I ordered this book immediately after "discovering" TurboGears. It is full of useful information, but the editing and organization leave a lot to be desired.
It is VERY IMPORTANT to be familiar with Python, because a lot of the programming examples contain mistakes. Many of the issues look like search-and-replace problems, because half of the examples in a chapter might refer to a class named one thing, and the others might refer to a different name that is obviously the same thing if you are paying attention.
Given that online documentation for TurboGears also seems somewhat disorganized and scattered, I'll be using this book as reference information while working on my first TG-based site.
Since the book provides a ton of information about a broad range of topics (TurboGears is, after-all, a conglomeration of a bunch of separate technologies), I'm overlooking the editing errors and giving it a 4 out of 5.
Flawed, but still useful.......2007-03-16
I was somewhat disappointed with this book, although I still found it to be useful for learning TurboGears. I won't mince words: the editing sucks. If you can get through the typos, though, you'll learn a fair amount and be better positioned to do something useful with TurboGears after you've read the book. Treat the book more as a tutorial than a reference.

A Must Read.......2007-01-04
I originally bought "The Longevity Bible" for my girl (?) friend who had recently suffered a broken leg, followed by a mild heart attack. I had it delivered to my house, and decided I had better look it over before giving it to her. I couldn't put it down. It is the most complete book on gaining & maintaining one's mental & physical health I have ever read (and trust me, I've read plenty).
How to shape up and stay strong........2006-09-24
Just a hundred years ago the average person didn't live much beyond 40: today modern medicine is promising many the opportunity to live into their nineties - but what about fading health and vitality? THE LONGEVITY BIBLE: 8 ESSENTIAL STRATEGIES FOR KEEPING YOUR MIND SHARP AND YOUR BODY YOUNG tells how to live longer and better, with chapters advocating building stress-free years and lifestyle, and telling how to shape up and stay strong.

The importance of an active mind!.......2006-08-16
For everyone who cares about their health, this book is the ultimate guide to self-improvement and longevity! Small is an expert in his field and he offers great advice on how to maximize health as you age.
I thoroughly enjoyed the chapters on memory. Small provides excellent information on memory loss - from facts to prevention - and he even includes exercises that stimulate the brain. Mental fitness is essential to sustaining an active, clear mind. Many people do not realize that working out your brain is just as beneficial as going to the gym. This book really highlights the importance of mental fitness and has led me to look for other ways to stimulate my brain. I joined a service called Agogus.com, which provides fun brain exercises and interesting articles. And, my mental clarity and sharpness continues to get better each day. The key to longevity is mental fitness, and if you ask me - we all need to put our brain on the treadmill!
Holistic balance and optimism!.......2006-08-06
What a delight. I was expecting yet another book on diet and exercise. Dr. Small, however, gives balance with only one chapter on diet and one on fitness. His other six essentials are mental and lifestyle. As Dr. Small put it, "Fix your brain and the rest will follow." The emphasis on a sharp mind, optimism, healthy relationships, finessing stress, environment, and using medicine well is right on. The advice is solidly based on research and clinical experience. The book is very practical and the writing has a wonderfully positive and upbeat tone. Well done! Michael Brickey, Ph.D., anti-aging psychologist and author of Defy Aging and 52 baby steps to Grow Young.
Can staying positive really lengthen your life? :-).......2006-07-10
Dr Gary Small is the director of the UCLA center on aging. His opinion is that happiness and positivity will actually increase and add years to your life expectancy.
This is an optimistic book that essentially says you can get smarter. We can do crossword puzzles and other challenging mental tasks will keep our brains sharp and young. He talks about 8 lifestyle stratagies that can dramatically reverse the ageing process. One is to sharpen the mind and apply the P's and Q's (perserverance, presense and quality - he goes into detail in the book). He talks about attitude. Optimism is better than pessimism. We need to mantain possitive outloks. We have to stay connected socially - if you are social you'll live longer rather than being a recluse. All these things can keep our immune stronger just by being happy. We have to reduce stress and say No (how many times do you say Yes to someone to please them and then upset yourself), and we have to cut loose toxic relationships that bring us down.
These are just some of the things he talks about and he does go in depth. When you read it right through, you can actually see how it makes sense and how you can incorporate these ideas into your life. It's a good read and eye-opening. It makes you want to go out and get into the best health (he talks about exercising too) we can get into. I want to try more Soduko's etc. I highly recommend this book.

IN HOLLYWOOD, THEY LIKE TO LOVE 'EM AND LEAVE 'EM.
The Starter Wife
A scathingly funny novel from the bestselling author of Maneater.
When her husband, Kenny, dumps her by cell phone (!) mere months before their ten-year wedding anniversary, Gracie Pollock is dazed and confused. Though life as the wife of a semi-famous Hollywood studio executive often left her yawning, Gracie always believed she and Kenny were different from other Hollywood couples. She never thought she'd be a starter wife.
But Kenny has upgraded, and with images of his new pop tartlet girlfriend everywhere Gracie turns, she seeks refuge at her best friend's Malibu mansion. Then a mysterious hunk saves her from drowning and suddenly drowning in her sorrows seems like a waste of time. And when she takes up with Kenny's boss, one of Hollywood's better-known Lotharios, she discovers that maybe life after divorce -- Hollywood-style -- isn't so bad after all!
Customer Reviews:
I am not sure if I would necessarily recommend that you read it, but.....!.......2007-08-14
I think the other reviews, and the description of the book is enough to give you an idea about what the book is about, so I will try not to retell. I decided to give the book a chance because I watched an episode of the television series and thought that it would be interesting. Please note that the book does vary from the series. Anyway, I am not sure if I was right about giving this book a chance. I expected it to be more like "Wolves in Chic Clothing", but it wasn't. At times it was too wordy and tooooooooo superficial.
In a nutshell, Gracie's Hollywood husband tells her that he wants a divorce via cell phone. He has found another love....a la Brittany Spears. He tells Gracie this after almost 10 years of marriage (he breaks the news 1 month before their anniversary) and a four year old daughter. And she realizes, he drops this news weeks before their pre-nup would be null in void. Anyway, as she goes through several unnecessary changes (for example, the whole I am not accepted in my old world because I was a starter wife and what does this mean?), she is supported by three loyal friends (a gay interior decorator, Will; a dizzy wife of a successful producer, Cricket; and a longtime friend and drunk, Joan). They soon help her realize that she never really, truly loved Kenny (a loser), and that she had indeed lost herself in the marriage. She had given up everything, including writing (she wrote children books) to become what he wanted, a Hollywood wife.
What I did like about the story was the journey Gracie made realizing that by compromising herself, or giving up small pieces of herself to satisfy her husband's desire for success, she forgot who she was. So, while discovering herself and her independence, she soon finds lust (which for her turns into love) with Sam, who appears on the surface to be a homeless man with a checkered past. I did like the story of how Sam became what he was, and how he decided to rejoin society because of his love for her. HOWEVER, there were several things that I didn't like about the novel. I thought the whole "ex-husband leaves her for Brittany Spears" was stupid! And the whole chatter containing the Hollywood inside scoop was dumb. I think the story referencing Gracie and Sam's journeys to find each other and themselves was more compelling than the "insider" scoop. With that in mind, a "2" is all that I think the book warrants, and that is probably being generous.
Incredibly well written but not a keeper.......2007-08-06
The author did an expert job at writing this book, the scenes and characeters were well described...but it lingered on and on and on.
A. This book could have been less descriptive at times and more to the point. Sometimes it dragged on and on describing one topic or scene.
B. Name dropping made the book less believable.
C. The female lead was annoying as was her husband.
I actually finished 1/2 the book and then I skipped right to the end.
Smooth out your beach blanket and enjoy the read.......2007-07-25
Gracie Pollock's husband Kenny dumps her just a few months shy of their tenth wedding anniversary--by cell phone, no less. She becomes what she and most other Hollywood wives fear and pity the most: a starter wife.
Gracie's life begins to change at an alarming pace. She and her daughter move to a friend's house in Malibu, where Gracie finds herself interested in both Kenny's boss and a mysterious man she meets on the beach. She must learn to navigate the post-divorce landscape.
Part chick lit, part Sex and the City-style satire (LA style, of course), part romance with a generous dash of humor, The Starter Wife is a fun summer read.
I also watched the USA Network's miniseries based on this novel, and I have to say much of it is not like the book. The characters are there, of course (some with different names), but much of the humor in the television version is nowhere to be found in the book. So if you're looking for the fun film noir scenes, or Joan's "sister" from her therapy session, you won't find them in the pages of Grazer's novel. The casting of Debra Messing, however, was perfect.
Armchair Interviews says: Fun summer read.
I've read better.......2007-07-23
I found the book funny but a bit predictable. The whole homeless/rich thing was sort of wierd. How great could he have looked? Did he go to the dentist? etc...
Also, the whole thing with Kenny's boss???
Nonexistant character development........2007-07-19
I actually saw the miniseries based on this book and decided to give in and read silly chick lit for once because I did enjoy said miniseries. BAD IDEA. What annoyed me about the miniseries was that it abounded in bad cliches; as for this novel, it completely lacked any sort of character development. I would have been much better off just sticking with the miniseries and enjoying it, because this novel ruined it for me. And they say that the book is usually better than the movie! Humph.
Customer Reviews:
Sometimes funny just isn't enough.......2007-06-29
There's a lot of humor in this novel, and anyone who enjoys send-ups of the Hollywood scene (some of us because we're disappointed we didn't make it in ourselves, and we want to believe these people are actually unhappy in spite of wealth and recognition) will get at least some laughs out of the story of poor Gracie, over-the-hill at 41. But while the author, via Gracie, can aim a arrow straight and true at Hollywood's heart, she never develops a story worthy of her wit. The first half of the book is a long comedy routine, and by the time we're supposed to care about what happens to Gracie it's too little too late.
I'm waiting for someone to write a book about how intensely gratifying it must be to be so accomplished at the art of acting that you can will roles for which there is unimaginable competition and not only have people pay money to come watch you but to do so for pleasure. Every novel needs conflict, but an author could certainly design a story in which that comes from another source.
Get That Novel Written
Book is better than the mini series.......2007-06-22
I read this book after seeing the commercials for the mini series. I must say I am glad I read the book first. I enjoy the show, but wish they would not have strayed so much from the book. In the book Crickett was a devoted friend throughout, and did not have a cheater for a husband. Joan was also more likeable in the book. I liked the character Will (name changed in the show) better in the book as well.
My advice, read the book!!
Stay away from this amateur book!.......2007-06-12
This is probably one of the worst books I have ever read. I picked it up at the airport to spend the next 7 hours on the plane - and boy did I regret it. The only reason I kept reading was because there was nothing else to do.
The main character - Gracie is so ridiculously self absorbed, shallow, vain and dumb that it's impossible to empathise with her when her husband dumps her - for Britney Spears! I mean, even Britney looks like a genius next to Gracie.
The plot (if you can call it that) is a done to death story about a wife who gets dumped by her rich and successful husband as he hits middle age, for a younger woman. There is no hint of grief or maturity in Gracie at that point. She's immediately scouting around Malibu looking for someone to date/make out with?
The name dropping gets on your nerves, the friends are one dimensional characters, Sam bored me to death.. The book seems like the work of a 6th grader, with a wafer thin plot, whiny and irritating characters and a school-girl style of writing.
And I can't believe there's a movie coming out based on this book!!!!
Truly Enjoyable Read.......2007-05-10
I picked up this book in the airport before a recent trip to Aruba. From the moment I picked it up, I could not put it down. Grazer writes a witty, fun, and humurous story that is the perfect beach/vacation read with characters that leave you wanting more and more. When a heard there would be a Lifetime television movie/show based on The Starter Wife I was delighted. Only thing is now it must live up to the print version.
Entertaining Read.......2007-04-05
I was reading over some of the other reviews and people seemed to not like the book, but honestly I thought it was really good. I started reading the book because i seen that there was going to be a show on TV this summer themed after the book and I already had it but hadnt read it yet so I wanted to read it before the show began. I did have a few issues with it, but all in all i rally enjoyed reading it. The whole Will and Gracie seemed to be a little bit like the long running sitcom "Will and Grace" and sometimes things seemed predictible or a little unbelievible. All in all the book was good, I enjoyed it, and would reccomend it to someone who just wanted a good book to enjoy by the pool this summer.

progress in designing and running a grid.......2006-09-13
The book defines the state of the art of grid networks. It shows the progress made in recent years. No longer is a grid network mostly a conceptual idea or just an implementation that proves such a network is possible.
Instead, much of the book is devoted to showing how to design and manage in some optimal manner a grid network. Definite progress. Another plus is a section that discusses how to integrate such a network with the distributed Web Services. Something that plays naturally to the distributed nature of the grid. There are simple examples using Web Services Description Language and UDDI. Nothing too sophisticated yet, unfortunately. But maybe in later editions of this book, we'll see some nontrival Web Services explained.
Book Description
Founded in Italy in 1986 by charismatic Italian gourmand Carlo Petrini, Slow Food has grown into a phenomenally successful movement against the uniformity and compromised quality of fast food and supermarket chains. With nearly 85,000 members in 45 countries around the world, Slow Food has developed from a small, grassroots group into the most influential gastronomic movement in the world. Known as the "WWF of endangered food and wine," Slow Food not only focuses on a slower, more natural and organic lifestyle that complements nature, but also works to preserve dying culinary traditions, conserve natural biodiversity, and protect fading agricultural practices threatened in this age of mass consumerism. The book takes the reader on a gastronomic journey through the practices and traditions of the world's ethnic cuisines, from the artisanal cheeses of Italy to the oysters of Cape May and the native American turkey. It includes testimonies from Slow Food representatives—such as Alice Waters of Chez Panisse—illustrating exactly what they are doing—and what still needs to be done—to preserve them.

Slow - Slower - Slowest.......2007-02-27
The Slow Food Movement is a response to Fast Food and the homogenization of food. The movement seeks to rediscover the conviviality of food, aims to preserve regional cuisines, and addresses agricultural issues. This book offers a good account of the development and the complex structure of Slow Food. The authors clearly lay out the philosophy and objectives of the movement and discuss a variety of food-related topics such as biodiversity, genetically modified food and food in relation to socio-economics. The book is augmented by a well selected bibliography, a glossary and a chronology of the movement. A personal interview with Carlo Petrini, the founder of the Slow Food Movement reveals more about Petrini's own relationship to food and raises controversial issues such as the contribution of Slow Food to the battle against hunger in the world.
However, quotations are sometimes too long and the first two chapters of the book that describe the roots of the movement contain a lot of detailed and excessive information. From chapter 3 onwards, the material gets much richer in content. Terms such as biodiversity and genetically modified food could be explained in more detail. The overall tone sometimes lacks objectivity and the title "Slow Food Revolution" doesn't seem quite adequate for a movement which is growing, but is probably not going to "revolutionize" eating habits. A more detailed discussion of how the philosophy of Slow Food can be integrated into daily life would be useful in this book.
I can recommend the book to anyone who is interested in discovering more about alternative approaches to food. For me it has been an inspiration to reflect upon my personal eating patterns and I've gained some knowledge about nutrition and agriculture. The authors invite their readers to re-think conventional eating habits while highlighting food as a way to experience conviviality and pleasure.

a BIG PHARM representive making money off innocent people.......2007-06-12
I stopped reading the book after chapter 10 "drugs and supplements". Apparently the author has NO real understanding and NO clue how to improve the memory. He has read the research paper for sure but didn't NOT UNDERSTAND the meaning behind it. For example, he's promoting statin drugs for enhancing memory. OMG! we all know that statins deplete coQ10 level in your brain, as well as ALL steroid hormones/oil-soluble vitamins in your body! Every cell membrane in your body contains cholesterol, esp. BRAIN CELL! By depressing cholesterol , coQ10, vitE production, you're killing your brain. Ironically, he also listed coQ10 in his book as memory enhancer.
If you want to know which supplements can enhance your memory, I recommend Your Miracle Brain by Jean Carper. If you want to learn the technique in terms of how to memorize information, I recommend Quantum Memory Power: Learn to Improve Your Memory with the World Memory Champion! [AUDIOBOOK] [UNABRIDGED] (Audio CD) by Dominic O'Brien.
Stay away from the drugs! My regimen: PS 100mg/d, R-type alpha lipoic acid 100mg/bid, acetyl-L-Carnitine 500mg/bid, fish oil, 1 table spoon/d, B12 sublingual 1000mcg/d, B complex once/d, VitC 1.5 g/d, grape seed/skin exract: 60mg/tid. If you're older and have low energy, take American ginseng and royal jelly. also, exercise, exercise, exercise...
Neurologist Recommended.......2007-05-13
My mom has been having problems with her memory and her brilliant neurologist recommended this book. The book has been extremely helpful to my mom! It is a must-have for anyone with memory problems!
A surprisingly simple 14-day plan to keep memory alive .......2005-10-07
How can brain function be improved to contribute to improved memory? Dr. Gary Small provides a surprisingly simple 14-day plan to keep memory alive in The Memory Prescription: Dr. Gary Small's 14-Day Plan To Keep Your Brain And Body Young. Try the questionnaire which helps you rate memory function, or try some of the mental exercises. There's plenty of room for changing and customizing Dr. Small's plan -- an important key to improving individual needs.
A Program to Help Mentally and Physically.......2005-07-15
As you can see by the title, Dr. Small, Director of the UCLA Center on Aging, has developed a program of diet and exercise that he says will improve your memory significantly in a program as short as 14 days.
The exercises he prescribes include both physical and mental exercises. The physical are minimal, low impact, exercises that lead you to believe that this is intended for a somewhat older audience. The mental exercises are not unlike those on I.Q. tests where you do problems in math, complete sequences, and so on.
As you might expect, these exercises are intended to be maintained on a regular basis for the rest of your life, or at least as long as you want to remember things and keep your body alive.
As a doctor, he can't resist talking about the drugs that are available to assist the aging population. Some of these are more in the area of diet supplements, some are prescription only.
All in all, this is not unlike the programs advocated by many physicians, just a bit more about mental agility than most. It's a new book, and the information relating to the latest studies of the brain and the newest drugs is here.
Very Important reading.......2004-10-03
I've read somewhere that there are more than one hundred billion
neurons in the human brain, and that they all can communicate with each other via one or more linkages. For any of you who feel like your brain isn't linking up lately, try reading "The Memory Prescription" by Dr.
Gary Small. After following the Doctor's prescription closely to the
letter for a couple of weeks (okay, my diet strayed a little) and doing
all his recommended exercises, I can honestly say I'm pretty impresssed
with the results. I can't promise you that every neuron of the one
hundred billion in your brain will be positively effected after reading
this book. But I can promise you that your memory, as mine did, will
undoubtedly improve."
"Neuron" info from "Mozart's Brain and the Fighter Pilot" by Richard
Restak, which I also recommend.
