"Here is the book that Romeo would have given Juliet; Charlie Brown would have given Snoopy; and you can give to some very special friend" proclaims the back cover of this small, whimsical book. Written in 1965 by Sandol Stoddard Warburg, it still makes the perfect present for your best friend. Not just any run-of-the-mill best friend, though. This book is for the kind of friend who yells for you when you get lost in Grand Central Station or pretends to save you when you pretend to be drowning. Or, as Warburg puts it, "You know how to be silly / That's why I like you / Boy are you ever silly / I never met anybody sillier than me / till I met you." I Like You is simple and quirky, uses words like "snurkle," and is laden with delightful Maurice Sendak-style pen-and-ink illustrations of alligators dancing, lively children, mirth, and general goofiness. Do you need new answers to the question "How do I like thee?" I Like You is a great help for counting the ways.(All Ages)

5 out of 5 stars Says it all.......2007-05-15

I gave this to my husband on our wedding day as part of my gift to him. He was blown away by how simple it was, but how perfectly it said everything I wanted to tell him.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect romantic gift.......2007-05-03

I was looking for a Valentine's Day gift for my girlfriend, and stumbled across this little gem. It's really not for kids at all, though they can have fun with it and get the superficial message. Adults realize that it's really talking about why we love each other. It does it in a whimsical way, completely devoid of Hallmark treacle and cloying mush, and makes you realize all the small yet critical ways that the other person meshes with you.

I am marrying my now-fiancee next week; in the ten years I've known her, this is her favorite gift. She keeps it on the nightstand and occasionally we'll quote from it or even leaf through it together.

5 out of 5 stars Touching.......2007-03-13

This book was touching and entertaining. The sentiment is timeless, even though there are a few phrases/words that I am sure meant something else in 1965 when the book was written. I would recommend this book for a loved one or good friend. Even though the title is "I Like You" the feeling is I Love You. The illustrations are cute and the overall feeling is whimsical.

5 out of 5 stars So cute, Great gift.......2007-03-08

This is a sweet little anytime gift or would be perfect for an anniversary/Valentine gift. It's sweet yet silly. Any girl would love it and it's not too sappy to give to a guy either.

My then boyfriend - now my husband of 39 years - gave me this book. My daughters, now grown with their own families, have given it their beloveds. The sweetest, gentlest, most caring book ever written. Its sentiments have held steadfast all these years.

5 out of 5 stars love this book!.......2007-10-11

I love this book and I can't wait to give it to my 7 month old nephew! His mommy, daddy and everyone who reads this to him will love it too. I would suggest this for anyone with a sweet little one in their life.

5 out of 5 stars best part of the day.......2007-09-11

This book is brilliant. I have read it over and over to my 4 year old son since he was born, and my 18 month old daughter - and it is because of the wonderful results. They squeal with delight and anticipation as they know where the kisses are coming next- holding there feet out, or hiding their chin. And we all love every page and closeness of a laughing, if not squirmy, goodnight.
Besides being one of the best ways to end the day, I also like how the book outlines the different people who make up the family sharing in kissing goodnight, and I suppose there must be some learning in there of body parts as you read the next line of where the kisses are going. But even without these additional features, the book is great and highly recommend it to any family with a newborn to toddler.

5 out of 5 stars Very Sweet and Endearing Read.......2007-08-10

This has become a staple in our household. We read it every night and of course, play it out too! My daughter loves this book and counting the kisses!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Mommy and Baby!!!.......2007-06-27

I have purchased this for my daughter and as gifts. It is a wonderful board book, which invites interaction between momma and baby with plenty of playful kisses!!!

4 out of 5 stars cute.......2007-06-08

My almost 2 year old daughter likes this book but not as much as "Daddy Hugs 123" by the same author...she LOVES that one. This one is cute though and she does like all the kisses she gets when she reads it, not that she doesnt get enough ALL day :-)

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!!.......2007-10-03

Dante "Danny" Valentine is angry, confused, has a bad past (what bounty hunter doesn't?), obsesses about her dead lover, and deals with her problems and feelings by trying to avoid them. She's no Buffy, although she does have a run-in with some vampires. All in all, an intelligent, well-thought-out universe, a rip-roaring story, and just enough confusion about what is going on in this future history to make you work harder to understand the motivations and actions of the characters. I wish I had written it!

3 out of 5 stars Dante's Dark Past.......2007-09-26

The novel is Dante's backstory served up with a serial killer murder mystery plot. The witty quips that gave the first novel panache are replaced by an atmosphere of serious angst at unspeakable deeds. Compared to the humor/action/drama balance of book one, this novel was more ordeal than enjoyment. It fills out the world of the Hegemony, but also introduces overdone supernatural elements like vampires (Nichtvren) and were(cain). An average novel, hoping later books are as good as the first.

4 out of 5 stars Loved it as much as the first one!.......2007-09-05

Love Dante's character in this series. Couldn't wait to read this sequel to Working for the Devil to find out what problems arose for her this go round! I was not disappointed. If you love Dante Valentine you'll love this one. Lot's of action, suspense, tears, anguish, pain, *happiness*...it was a read on the edge of your seat kinda book. The Devil has come looking for her again. Dark and edgy.

5 out of 5 stars Number 1 on My List.......2007-08-09

You can read any one of the 50 or 60 plot synopses on the reviewers page, but let me cut to the chase. This book is about grief: gut-wrenching, oh-god-make-it-stop, end-of-the-word grief.

Saintcrow's Dante Valentine is one of the most "beat-up" characters I've ever encountered in a book. She is so inundated by loss, she goes through the entire story afloat on a sea of emotional agony, most engendered by the loss she experienced in the last book (also a good read, but not as emotional), but much by the resurrected ghosts of her own past that she must deal with in this installment. Either way, Valentine's in a world of hurt, and Saintcrow's writing draws you into that pain, tosses you about on the waves, and lands you, cathartic, on surprisingly soft shore.

The story is fast-paced, the characters interesting and sympathetic, and the world enticing. This is dark urban fantasy at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating!.......2007-07-28

In Lilth Saintcrow's latest Dante Valentine novel, the scene is set for about a year later, several months and Dante is still mourning over the loss of Japh. She keeps his urn that is filled with his remains and tries to keep herself busy with hunts so that she won't think about Japh. Not that she needs the money that they provide, for she is still set for life from the devil's payment from last time.

But suddenly people Dante knows from her past are dying. They are the same people that suffered with her at the horrendous Rigger Hall and the devious and evil headmaster, who was brutally murdered by some of the students one fataful night and it is these setudents involved who are being killed. Dante doesn't want to take the case at first, because than she would be forced to remember Rigger Hall and all its horrors, but eventually complies. Still having Jace live with her, together they set out and do the research required to solve the case. But things start to getr serious.

For one thing the Devil has been calling upon her asking for Japh, who is dead. Dante is furious and confused by this. Why would he call asking for Japh, when it was he who killed him? As Dante gets closer to discovering the mystery behind the murders another death close to home occurs. It is then Dante has had enough and decides that she will do this hunt alone and finish it, even if she loses her own life. But when it comes to the final battle some unexpected help comes her way.

Overall a great book. At times it did run a little slow, like the characters were going in circles, but eventually after a few pages the action does pick up. The next Dante novel is due out in Sept. Then another in Nov. And the last one in Jan. 08!

Like many others, I thought this book was written in the present and was surprised to find such dated attitudes caontained within. Sure it is enjoyable as a novlety read, and would be a great addition to anyone who is a collector of such items, but for serious information on the art of charm it would be best to avoid this book

5 out of 5 stars Old advice still rings true........2007-08-18

This book is a really nice read. There are only a couple of places where you are reminded it was written so long ago. Many of the things that are being taught in the book are still relevant today.

I would recommend it to anyone smart enough to realize that it matters.

It contains pretty much the same information in other beauty books out there. Not impressive.

The book was OK...but, it didn't keep me reading (I had to struggle to finish it) It was seemed like it was just taken from an OLD book & not really for today's readers. I was hoping for something MORE & this just wasn't it.

Book Description

The long awaited text for 21st century courses in biological inorganic chemistry is now available. Organized and edited by Ivano Bertini, Harry Gray, Ed Stiefel, and Joan Valentine, with contributions from many other world leaders in the field, this all-new book is equally appropriate for graduate or senior undergraduate courses in bioinorganic chemistry. The book has been extensively class-tested at Princeton and UCLA, and it includes tutorials in biology and biochemistry and in inorganic chemistry to aid students of varying backgrounds. The main text is divided into two parts. Part A, "Overviews of Biological Inorganic Chemistry," sets forth the unifying principles of the field. A full course in bioinorganic chemistry could be based entirely on this overview section, which is a really a book within a book! Part B, "Metal-Ion Containing Biological Systems," describes specific classes of systems in detail. A special feature is the strong connection to the genomic revolution that has dramatically enhanced our ability to define the function of gene products in living organisms. Throughout the book, protein data bank codes are given for structures discussed in the text, and students are encouraged to learn to use the PDB in their courses and research. This exciting new book will be a must read for years to come for all students and researchers interested in the field of biological inorganic chemistry.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, too speculative.......2007-06-09

I get sick of hearing about chemical evolution as if it is the only way life can exist, they never point out the extreme unlikelyhood of the theory, or even that it is a theory. I wouldn't complain since most science texts that venture a guess about origins yields similar speculation, but this book really beats you over the head with it.
Otherwise, the compilation of authors is great, and the scope of the text is very applicable once you get to actual data that can be measured.

Book Description

Dante Valentine, Necromancer and bounty hunter, just wants to be left alone. But the Devil has other ideas. The Prince wants Dante. And he wants her now. And Dante and her lover, Japhrimel, have no choice but to answer the Prince's summons. And to fulfill a seemingly simple task: become the Devil's Right Hand, hunt down four demons that have escaped from Hell, and earn His gratitude. It's a shame that nothing is ever easy when it comes to the Devil. Because of course, he doesn't tell Dante the whole truth: there is a rebellion brewing in Hell. And there is a good chance that Lucifer is about to be pushed off the throne. But Dante is getting really tired of being pushed around. And this time, she might be angry enough to take on the Devil himself...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Valentine is back!.......2007-10-10

Dante Valentine is back in her third novel: "The Devil's Right Hand". To tell you the truth I thought that the previous books were much more enjoyable to read and though this book isn't as good I'd still suggest you try it out! The one thing that bugged me was Japhrimel. I'd always liked him a lot as a character and even as a demon but he seemed to take way too much controle of Danny and always kept her out of the action. In fact that still bugs me now but that's all I didn't like. Good book over all. And I agree that Lilith Saintcrow has created another thriller...

Danny Valentine isn't happy now. Besides the fact that she's become super rich and is with the love of her life things are going down hill. She's just agreed to work for Lucifer (the devil) for seven entire years of her life and her fallen-demon Japhrimel. She's now his right hand and has been ordered to kill four demons that have escaped from hell. But...is she in the action now? Or is Japhrimel been lying to her all this time? Somethings up and if you know Dante then you can already predict what's going to happen next...

Happy Reading!

5 out of 5 stars awesome fantasy.......2007-10-08

In the far distant future on Earth, the phenomena known as the Awakening brought into being a vast number of psionics and those with magical abilities that hid in the shadows before entered this new world. Dante Valentine has found her necromance powers (the ability to raise the dead and ask them questions) that help her earn a living as a bounty hunter. When out on one of her assignments she meets Japhrimel a demon who is part of the Greater Flight, Lucifer's oldest son and his best assassin.

He gives up his place in hell for her becoming an A'nankhimel a fallen who has tied himself to Dante who he genetically changed into a half demon known as a hedaria. Lucifer calls Dante to him and Japhrimel accompanies her. They make a deal that they will hunt down four greater demons who escaped to earth in exchange for Japhrimel getting his demonic powers back in full. Dante is now under Lucifer's protection for eternity and full control of the Hellessvront, people places, objects, and money that Lucifer has available on Earth. When Dante finds out whom one of the demons she is to hunt is she wants to back out of the deal but nobody reneges on an agreement with Lucifer and lives to tell the tale.

The story line is fast-paced but devilishly driven by the Faustian deal. Dante is strong and independent but she is also using magic and afraid that good things and people in her life, like Japhrimel will be destroyed. Readers can actually see her struggling to accept Japhrimel's love for her. It is a torturous process with so many doubts when she feels insecure that the audience will think Japhrimel is a saintly demon for putting up with her. Lilith Saintcrow is one awesome fantasy writer.

Harriet Klausner

4 out of 5 stars The boyfriend survived!!!!!.......2007-09-30

Not much really happens in this book... it all seems to be leading to the next book. But some of the things that do happen are interesting. I did find the relationship between Dante and her demon lover not very loving. One would think a relationship with a demon would be a bit warmer than this. The writer referred to them being together for years, she didn't say how many, but the two didn't relate on a very fundamental level. They were more like employer and employee. Because their relationship is lackluster, the best parts of the book are the action, dealings with an underhanded devil (what other kind is there?)and the building of a team that will be doing bounty hunting jobs for Lucifer himself.

Understanding the world they live in is tedius, terms and details not needed, can be skipped and you'll still get the picture where the action takes up. All in all, I can't wait for the next two books that are coming.

3 out of 5 stars Overly Romancy With Trust Issues.......2007-09-26

Dante Valentine needs to remember that she is indeed a Necromance half-demon girl who knows runic magic. Why? Because the only relevant part of that amazing character description that matters in this novel, is the half demon toughness. Dante spends the entire novel as an emotionally recovering punching bag.

Her semi-idyllic life with Jaf is shattered by Lucifer, but Dante never takes charge of her quest to kill off renegade demons as the devil's new right hand. Why? Because Jaf thinks *he* is in charge, and neither of them trust each other enough to share authority. The romantic power struggle between Dante and Jaf overshadowed the backdrop, and the novel felt more like man vs woman than supernatural action.

Hopefully #4 will be better.

4 out of 5 stars If you've started the series keep on reading!!.......2007-09-22

Dante Valentine lives in an alternate universe where things supernatural are normal. She's worked as a necromancing bountyhunter, bested the devil and moved to a new town with her demon boyfriend. The whole time having more inner conversations than outloud ones.
The first two books in the series were good reads, fast paced and the character of Dante was quarky and tough. This book seems to have lost a bit of that. She is self-concious and completely unsure of herself now. Her Demon boyfriend is overbearing. He comes off as controling, refusing to tell her things that could actually help her. But, the next book is sceduled to come out soon and I have hope that all of these changes in personality will be explained.
I would recomend this book if you've read the first two. Why quit now. It seems to be more of a bridge to move the plot to where the author ultimatly wants to go. Seeing as how we don't have to wait a year or two for another installment reading "The Devils Right Hand" will keep you up to speed.

4 out of 5 stars Good addition to your motor control library........2002-01-30

Overall, the book presents fairly practical hardware solutions to motor controllers design from industrial, automotive, to appliances.
It is a good book for those doing motor controller designs. It covered power device protection well and author seems to have practical experience and says when he has or has not tried out circuits presented in the book.
For those doing a lot of detailed control algorithyms, like PID, adaptive etc., or firmware development, if you are using motorola microcontrollers, the example code works well, however since flow chart or description of algorithym is not presented, and is buried in the code example, you are out of luck. Also, I think if it expands to cover DSP, and multiaxis controllers, it would be great. More details on the actual applications of say
speed or torque control using position feedback like digital encoders may help those beginners in motor controls.
I agree with another reviewer that it is one of the better books on motor control electronics that is out there. Definitely, a good companion to a firmware book on controls or actual application notes on application of micro or dsp's in motor controls.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive book on motor control.......2001-04-19

Excellent book covering all aspects of motor control. This book did a very good job of covering control electronics, intermediate drive electronics and power devices. In addition it covered distributed drive controllers, sources of noise, and design principals. It had examples of a range of motor drive types including AC, DC PM, brushless, etc. It relied a little too much on Motorola parts but all in all it was an excellent book and a valuable resource.

4 out of 5 stars good book on variable speed theory........1999-05-09

I have been interested in electric motor controls for use in robotics for some time. This is the best book on the subject I have found so far. The book assumes you have a fairly complete knowledge of IGBTs, Mosfets and a solid background in electronics. Lacks important information on 3 phase, two phase, and single phase induction motor operation theory. Has good description of various problems produced by variable speed drives. There is a good theoretical overview of variable speed drive techniques.

    4 out of 5 stars Supplemental Text.......2007-05-25

This book was recommended by a professor as a good supplemental text. So far, I have been glad I bought it. The main text is very good, but very technical. This book helps to fill in some of the holes that come up.

It is quite bright and colorful inside, and not what I expected. It is easy to read and demonstrates how to get started using MATLAB.

4 out of 5 stars American geographers need basic concepts to understand advanced Geography.......2007-08-21

I have this book and Key Methods in Geography in the same series.
See the other review by student K McClane. The probable reason NMSU geography professors chose this book for their Las Cruces geography grad students (it's written by UK geographers)has to do with the lack of adequate American texts on the subject of geography concepts. It's not perfect, but I dare any other American geography grad student to find something comparable for advanced cultural and physical geographers in training in the U.S.

1 out of 5 stars This book sucks.......2007-06-30

This was a required textbook for a research course. What a waste of time. Geography is a broad and interesting field. The book was mostly a boring presentation of boring subjects. I would rather have read something by E.O. Wilson or some other brilliant scientist. It's the only textbook I have ever given away to the nearest taker.

    Book Description

My Bloody Valentine's Loveless is one of the most revered albums of the 1990s. Highly influential, shrouded in mystery, it has - so far - been an impossible album to follow up for its chief creator, Kevin Shields. Here, Mike McGonigal pieces together the often painful process behind the writing and recording of Loveless, and tries to separate fact from fiction in a story that involves (among other things) chinchillas, chicken-eating contests, countless engineers, and sleep deprivation. The result - with the help of Kevin Shields and the rest of MBV - is a fitting tribute to this remarkable record.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Read.......2007-05-27

The book was a quick read and offered a lot of information on the making of one of the greatest albums in rock history. I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Loveless: Strength from adversity.......2007-03-25

Mike McGonical's contribution in the 33 1/3 series is an essential item for any fans of My Bloody Valentine. I suspect more than a few people came to MBV's music like myself, via the Lost in Translation soundtrack, the purchase of Loveless, and then back tracking through the earlier albums, and scouring websites for downloads of other pieces, live concerts and videos. The book is well researched with much of the narrative from interviews conducted by McGonical with Kevin Shields. Much has been written about the lengthy gestation of this album and the financial implications this had for Creation records. However, what comes across more strongly in the personal accounts from Shields, Bilinda Butcher and Deb Googe is the cost it incurred in terms of Shields' relationships with the other group members and the final demise of one of the most original bands of the 1980s and early 1990s. That Colm O'Ciosoig hardly played on the album was probably well known to MBV fans: that Deb Googe played not a note on the album is a revelation indeed and, one senses the hurt and tension this must have caused. The history of the album seems almost oddessey-like in its progress from studio to studio with a multitude of engineers and the debilitating illness from depression that robbed O'Ciosoig of his playing abilities. Loveless is a testament to Shields abilities to keep things moving despite these adversities. Of course, the release of Loveless did not usher in happy times for the Valentines, who were kept afloat for a few years by Island records, before they too lost patience and pulled the plug on the band as MBV struggled to build their own studio. Besides an account of the epic struggle to make the album, there are some interesting conversations with Shields on the creative process, and on the way feedback, trances, dreams and sleeplessness can intersect to provide inspiration. Mike McGonical and 33 1/3 have done a great job in enhancing the enjoyment of Loveless and Valentine's music.

4 out of 5 stars It's a good book but only partially about Loveless.......2007-03-01

I first pre-ordered this book several years ago. The fact that like the real album, it's release was delayed for literally years played out almost like a quaint homage to the album.

I also really enjoyed the book, but not for the reasons I usually enjoy this series. The book does have a lot of McGonigal's personal anecdotes, but I was able to look past those, because he made a damn good effort to speak to every member of the band (3 of 4 are represented in the text), people from the Creation lable, engineers, management and friends. Primary interviews make a world of difference -- why speculate about Kevin Shield's state of mind when you can ask him? Few authors in this series have gone the extra mile to deliver points of view from so many people involved with the album in question.

I also enjoyed getting what I consider the first real response from Shields about the huge cost and time consumption of Loveless -- even if he's wrong, it at least balances out the people who say he bankrupt the company (clearly he didn't help).

However, the book is really only partially about Loveless and only mostly focused on the time the album was being made. It's really a My Bloody Valentine book and as Loveless is their most important work and took up a huge amount of the time they were a band, it's the central issue. The book treads into technical and song writing territory to a certain degree, however I still don't have much of an idea about what Shields was doing in the studio, but that has as much to do with the way Shields answers the questions as how the book was written.

If you've read every Shields interview and think you know everything about My Bloody Valentine, you can probably skip this book. If however, you want to read everything you need to know about them in an afternoon -- pick it up, it's a very enjoyable, if somewhat disjointed read.

2 out of 5 stars Too much McGonigal, not enough MBV.......2007-02-15

I was extremely disappointed in this book. Like many other reviewers I had been waiting anxiously for its release and this makes the disappointment with the final product even more difficult to take.

McGonigal places himself in this book far too often. He presents only the most loose of narratives about the band itself and writes in what I consider to be an extremely amateur manner. It seems as if the book was produced with very little journalistic rigor, frequently regurgitating items from a previous work on My Bloody Valentine which should be considered at best disputed rather than true facts.

3 out of 5 stars For those interested in the folklore..........2007-02-13

I'd been waiting for this book to come out for years, and when it finally did, I was a bit disappointed. The facts are straight, but the presentation was poor. And while I enjoyed reading about the background of this great album, I can't help but think that the only reason I kept reading it was because I'm heavily obsessed by MBV.

Overall, it's a poorly written book, and the layout is messy and scattered. It's a good purchase if your hungry for the knowledge, but otherwise it can be an annoying read.
