Book Description
This four-part volume uses an exceptional art program–with sumptuous color pictures–to introduce readers to a succession of art styles from prehistoric times and ancient Egypt, to the vast world of Western painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, and the minor arts. Elegantly written, it contains a balanced and interesting narrative that increases ones ability to understand art.
Parts I and II cover The Ancient World and The Middle Ages, with a look at prehistoric; Egyptian; ancient near eastern; Aegean; Greek; Etruscan; Roman; early Christian, Byzantine, and Medieval; Romanesque; and Gothic art. Part III looks at the Renaissance through the Rococo–with a focus on the early and high renaissance in Italy; mannerism and other trends; âLate Gothicâ painting, sculpture, and the graphic arts; and the Baroque in Italy, Spain, Flanders, Holland, France and England. Part IV is a treatment on the modern world, including Neoclassicism and Romanticism; Realism and Impressionism; Post-impressionism, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau; Twentieth-Century painting, sculpture, architecture, and photography; and Postmodernism.
For those who appreciate art as individual works, rather than a mere collection of data.
Customer Reviews:
Historical context makes art more meaningful.......2007-08-13
This book is incredibly comprehensive and covers all aspects of art in different cultures, including painting, sculpture, architecture, and burial sites. It is remarkably detailed (almost too much so), and has many great pictures.
The most distinctive aspect of this book is the primary sources it includes that explain the historical context of artworks. For example, there are numerous letters (translated, of course) from Italian artists in the Renaissance to their clients. Another text includes excerpts from the law code of Hammurabi, to accompany the sculptural piece on which it was originally engraved.
Yayy!!!.......2007-06-14
An excellent base for an art student to build upon; clear, informative, visual, and historical. Supplements and sources such as Wikipedia and encyclopedias and history texts will show how intertwined art is with politics and religions in depth where the book skims over.
A wonderful book, and covers some Eastern Art despite the focus title on the West. Chapters are organized and they get the point across; lovely descriptions of photographs that are present in the book, so you really get to study the subject and with the assistance of the text, see the inner beauty in the architecture.
What I found lacking was the mention of the Golden Ratio, and in fact, any mathematics whatsoever. As mathematics is very important to ancient-modern art, I found it rather confusing. However, as said before, an excellent base.
Very intriguing and not in the least boring or dry, Janson's History of Art is a prime choice coupled with supplementary books. If you're interested in overall art history, this is the one to go with...
Have fun!!!
a standard.......2006-07-23
This is one of the standard history of art textbooks. Of course it includes color prints of all the most famous art of the Western tradition, as well as numerous photographs and floorplans of famous architecture. It has a little coverage of Islamic art, but that is a topic that deserves better than it can be given in a textbook on the Western tradition. Painting, architecture and sculpture are clearly the focus, but photography and decor each get a nod. Other forms of art--from gardening to appliance design--although interesting, evidently cannot fit in this space.
The text is adequate: a little better than standard textbook composition, less dull, perhaps a touch less condescending, and of course perfectly informative.
Issues in technique, interpretation and so on are well-introduced.
If you, like me, are not a student but an adult just curious about art, this is a fine choice. I've also enjoyed work by Robert Hughes ("The Shock of the New," which I strongly recommend, and "American Visions"), Andre Malraux ("The Voices of Silence") and David Morgan ("The Sacred Gaze").
(I'm not widely read in this field by any means: those are the only books I've read about Western art history! So there could be various better books out there. But still, this textbook has been very useful to me, helping me fill out my knowledge in many areas.)

"This Fox is a tricky fox. He'll try to get your tongue in trouble." Dr. Seuss gives fair warning to anyone brave enough to read along with the Fox in Socks, who likes to play tongue-twisting games with his friend Mr. Knox. "Here's an easy game to play. Here's an easy thing to say.... New socks. Two socks. Whose socks? Sue's socks." But Mr. Fox Socks isn't about to let Knox off so easy. Soon Goo-Goose is choosing to chew chewy gluey blue goo, while tweetle beetles battle with paddles in a puddle (in case you were wondering, that's called a "tweetle beetle puddle paddle battle"). Mr. Knox gets exasperated: "I can't blab such blibber blubber! My tongue isn't made of rubber." But he catches on to the game before it's all through. One of Seuss's best, this must-read-aloud classic is guaranteed to get many giggles out of readers young and old. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

Great book.......2007-10-07
This is a really fun book to read to your preschool / pre-k child. It's really enjoyable - both for the parent reading it (for the 10th time) and for the child listening to it. My child loves it. I often buy it as a gift for other children.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The Fox is certainly a better vulpine than I am, given that I couldn't stand running around with socks on my feet.
This incongruity is perhaps part of why I found this book highly amusing as a very young kid, so, a good fun production by Seuss.
Classic Seuss.......2007-07-04
The very same seuss poetry we read to our children 30 years ago, we are now reading to our grandchildren. Thank you Amazondotcom for your fantastic bargains!!!!!!!!!!
Not just for kids.......2007-05-31
As a community theater director, I was running out of tongue-twisters for the traditional vocal warmups when I remembered "Fox in Socks." I brought my dogeared copy down to the theater and ever since, it's been part of my standard backstage warmup repertoire. Even the most jaded actors light up in grins when I lead them through the Tweedle Beetle Battle.
seuss for all........2007-05-23
You can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss. His non-sensical rhyming inspires word play and imagination in my six year old son as it did for me when I was his age.

The only book you need!.......2007-09-10
This book teaches that even if you are not the next Amazon, ebay, or Google, you can still make a million on the internet. You just need to find a niche that is underserved.
I purchased "Starting an Online Business for Dummies" and the reviews were mixed. In someone's reviews, they mentioned this book and said it was much better. They suggested buying this book instead of the Dummies book. I took the advice, and am glad I did!
The book is great because it helps you understand that you don't need to be a billion dollar business to start with. Even small, underserved niche markets can earn a million.
I highly recommend this book if you are considering an ebusiness. It is well worth the money. I have been talking about this book to many people who have asked to borrow the book. I keep telling them to pick up their own copy because I am still using it as a reference! It is a great book!

If you already know what a "blog" is and you're fully proficient in searching the internet with google or yahoo, you're probably too sophisticated for this book. Fox's target are people with very little education (He introduces us at one point to the fancy MBA word, "business plan"). Fox also uses the website he started for his wife and mother as case studies. I guess I should have known better. After all, it is called 'Internet Riches" and has a picture of some guy driving in a brand new convertible on the cover.

The Sermon on the Mount--now passing its 65th birthday--remains a vital and provocative introduction to the ideas at the heart of Christian Science. At heart it means to be entirely practical, as the "Science" of the name would indicate. Denying any interest in theology (there is no theology in the Bible, Fox argues), the author instead suggests that what Jesus was after was results: "Jesus explains to us what the nature of God is, and what our own nature is; tells us the meaning of life and of death; shows us why we make mistakes; why we yield to temptation; why we become sick, and impoverished, and old; and, most important of all, he tells us how all these evils may be overcome, and how we may bring health, happiness, and true prosperity into our lives."
And the Spiritual Key? Fox puts it quite simply: "The Truth turns out to be nothing less than the amazing but undeniable fact that the whole outer world--whether it be the physical body, the common things of life, the winds and the rain, the clouds, the earth itself--is amenable to man's thought, and that he has dominion over it when he knows it." --Doug Thorpe
Book Description
Fresh with contemporary relevance, this classic of positive thinking from one of the world's great motivational writers offers galvanizing insights on self-transformation. Based on Emmet Fox's simple message that "thoughts are things" and all potential lies in their creative and constructive use, these thirty-one inspiring essays how to have it all -- health, healing, happiness, and a liberated spirit -- through the power of constructive though. First published in 1940, Power Through Constructive Thinking has been a never-failing source of strength and renewal for generations of readers.
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite books. .......2007-10-10
My first copy I obtained through a friend in AA back in 1998. After having read this book, it was a turning point in my life. My life dramatically turned for the better. I appreciate Dr. Fox's insights on the Lord's Prayer and the Sermon on the Mount.
I am somewhat surprised based upon the negative reviews. Especially those who either explicitly or implicitly state they are in a 12 step program. I have been sober for 19 years and I found this to be an excellent book.
For me it chellenged my flawed view on God and God's Will. This book has motivated me to ernestly seek God's Will. For if God is boundless Love who is my true Father, then how could God's Will be anything but joyous and in my best interests.
I did not find this book challenging Christ's sacrifice on the cross for our sins. For me one of the best lessons learned from this book can be stated "As within, so without". I am ultimately responsibile for the conditions in my life. The conditions presently in my life are an outpicturing of what I hold in my heart. This follows Jesus's words that "every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit" (Matthew 7:17-18).
This book as well as Dr. Fox's other books have emphasized that the more of a conscious contact that I make with God so shall my conditions improve. For if I dwell and abide in God I can only experience the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22).
I pray that all those who read this book come to accept Christ as their saviour and find a relationship with God that results in an abundant life.
Warm regards,
Brendan
Profound.......2007-09-04
This book is easily one of the most important books I have ever read. I have been studying spirituality and metaphysical books for over 10 years and have read many books from some of the greatest teachers there are, but I have not found any that have had such an effect on my life and my family's as well.
Emmet Fox just slices through some of the most difficult texts (especially biblical ones) and speaks right to your heart. The truth of his words is so powerful that it brought me to tears. I have the first copy of this book that is almost completely worn out, but I buy several every year to give to friends and try to read it again yearly, as it really does continue to teach with every reading.
sermon on the mount.......2007-07-03
I purchased this book for a friend we have both read and feel empowered! Forget about the secret, this is the real deal.
An analysis of Jesus' famous sermon.......2007-05-27
Fox analyses the famous Sermon on the Mount. His observations are very detailed and his conclusions are inspiring. Jesus was never superfluous with his words on the sermon. Because of this every single word has a deep meaning and a reason for being. Emmet Fox attempts to give us that reason and in so doing lays out a way of life that is easy to understand.
Quintessential Spiritual Guide.......2007-05-21
This book is a gem for meeting life's struggles both externally and internally. The author is a Christian, I am not, but his words transcend religion and speak directly to faith in God and how to apply it to powerful affect.
He breaks down and defines the spiritual meaning (not necessarily the popular meaning) behind some of the greatest words Jesus ever spoke in his Sermon on the Mount. His honesty and faith shine through in every sentence. By the way, Mr. Fox doesn't waste a word pontificating or proselytizing. His objective is to articulately convey his personal and educated understanding of a faith that works, purposely setting no boundaries on belief. Powerful stuff.

Customer Reviews:
Great Overview.......2007-04-25
An invaluable primer on casino management. This book should be on the shelf of every executive in the gaming industry.
The Best of Its Genre.......2007-02-03
"Casino Operations Management" is the best book on the market now focusing on operational issues that confront casino managers. It is arguably "too much" for an undergraduate course, but the book is highly recommended for casino managers who want to strengthen their understanding of what makes a casino really tick. Those simply interested in in-depth knowledge of the industry's operational issues will also find the book helpful.
casino operations.......2006-06-30
Good overview of casino operations. It covers Indian gaming as well as Nevada and mentions where there are difference. I am the controller and I wish it had more accounting /finance.
Excelent operations overview.......2005-10-29
This book is a must read for everyone entering the casino business. It's a clear reference, and it shows derails some myths about gaming operations.
Great read.......2005-06-14
This books assumes you know nothing about Gaming Operations and goes from there, taking you on an in-depth exploration of the gaming industry, from it's beginnings through modern-day operations. This book was highly beneficial. I also read "The Gaming Industry: Introduction and Perspectives" from the UNLV International Gaming Institute, both of which I would strongly recommend. Well written and dives to the appropriate level of detail.
Book Description
Human Physiology is intended for the one-semester Human Physiology course often taken by allied health and other biology students. The beginning chapters introduce basic chemical and biological concepts to provide students with the framework they need to comprehend physiological principles. The chapters that follow promote conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization of facts. Health applications are included throughout to heighten interest, deepen understanding of physiological concepts, and help students relate the material to their individual career goals. Every effort has been made to help students integrate related concepts, and understand the relationships between anatomical structures and their functions.
Customer Reviews:
plethora of images aptly supplement the text.......2006-02-12
This is the textbook used in my bioengineering physiology class, and overall, it thus a great job of covering the basics of physiology without going too deep into the details. You get a nice view of the big picture and even get a lot of help understanding the concepts because of all the figures and images that they have included in this book. This would thus be an appropriate textbook if you're teaching yourself physiology as it applies to humans.
If you're looking for something that goes into more detail, more appropriate for a medical or professional bookshelf, I highly suggest checking out Guyton and Hall's Textbook of Medical Physiology. It is a book that will certainly be a great addition to the bookshelf of physicians and bioengineers alike.
One of the best textbooks I have purchased but............2005-02-05
One of the best textbooks I have purchased; very easy to read, succint, and well-written. However, McGraw-Hill falsely advertises about the online learning tools such as online quizzes, etc. You can spend $132.00 but you are NOT getting the online learning tools as they said!

One of the best books.......2007-10-10
This is the sweetest bed time book. The rhymes are so sweet. I love reading it to my daughter and she enjoys it as well.
Destined to be a classic.......2007-09-23
I belong to a local reading council made up of several teachers and librarians and one of the service projects that we participate in involves giving a book to all newborn babies in our community, along with some literature about how important it is to read to your child. When it came time to choose a book for this project Mem Fox's "Time for Bed" was our choice. The words are a perfect bedtime lullaby and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful! I think this story is destined to be a classic bedtime story and I hope it is read for generations to come!
Enduring classic bedtime story.......2007-08-24
Sweet and loving, gentle and soothing, beautifully illustrated ! A favorite of my 6 children as they were growing up and now enjoyed by my grandchildren. Highly recommended !
Twelve years reading this and its still a favorite childrens book.......2007-08-13
I have been reading this book to my grandbabies for the past twelve years....and as each one hears it for the first time, it instantly becomes one of their favorites. Timeless.
Our first choice for a bedtime book.......2007-07-16
My son was 14 months old when he gave up his bottles before bedtime. As an alternative to the bottle, he chose this book. He responded to the rhythm of the poetry and was charmed by the little baby on the last page. He is always happy to see her, and seems inspired by her to curl up in his own bed and go to sleep too.
We would highly recommend this book.
Book Description
This long-awaited revision to Ruppert/Barnes' best-selling introduction to the biology of invertebrates is highly regarded for its accuracy and strong research base. This thorough revision provides a survey by groups, emphasizing adaptive morphology and physiology, while covering anatomical ground plans and basic developmental patterns. New co-author Richard Fox brings to the revision his expertise as an ecologist, offering a good balance to Ruppert's background as a functional morphologist. Rich illustrations and extensive citations make the book extremely valuable as a teaching tool and reference source.
Customer Reviews:
An Outstanding Textbook and Reference.......2006-12-29
This is the best invertebrate zoology textbook on the market, perhaps the best ever written. The authors are not content to merely present in fine detail the classification, anatomy, physiology, behavior, and ecology of invertebrates, they present alternative interpretations and controversial opinions where these topics are concerned. In that way, invertebrate zoology comes alive as an active, important, and relevant field of study for understanding the ecology and evolutionary relationships of these organisms in a global setting. I highly recommend this book for a course of study or as a reference for Earth Science instructors who wish to solidify and deepend their knowledge and understanding of invertebrates.
The best invert book on the planet.......2004-01-30
This text is the most comprehensive yet easy to read book on invertebrates out there. Using an evolutionary approach, it begins with the simplest organisms and ends with the most complex. Reproduction, organ systems, and lifestyle are discussed in detail giving the reader a functional view of a continuum of simple to complex nervous systems, digestive systems and locomotive and reproductive life styles. This book explains invertebrate zoology using techniques and concepts that can be used to study most biology topics in a systematic fashion. It is a must own for any undergraduate or post graduate!!!
The ""Bible" of Invertebrate Zoology.......2001-07-12
A modern replacement of Libby Hyman's classic series, but, even so, is now beoming out of date because of the rapid advances in molecular biology. Dr. Barnes is deceased and I understand that Dr. Ruppert has no plans to update the book, a horrendous undertaking. Nevertheless, I know of no substitute for this fine text. Readers should also refer to Margulis & Schwartz "Five Kingdoms".
Sets the standard for Invertebrate Zoology texts.......2000-05-04
Ruppert and Barnes' text, now in its 6th edition sets the standard for invertebrate zoology texts. The authors provide adequate depth for undergraduate courses in invertebrate zoology, and good fodder for graduate students starting in the discipline as well.
There are outstanding collections of line drawings in the text -- a method of illustration I prefer to photographs for most instructional purposes.
There is good coverage of invertebrate animal groups, but, since it's published in 1994, there are a few places where the book is becoming dated. There is, for example, no information about the Cycliophora, the latest invertebrate phyla to be proposed.
I hope that there will continue to be new editions of this text produced. I cut my teeth on the 3rd edition, and other editions have figured prominently as I have worked through my graduate and professional careers.
Top-notch material. If you are considering which text to select for an invertebrate zoology course, I urge you to give this book a look.
"quite simply the best book on invertebrate zoology".......1999-05-09
This book covers all the major taxa of invertebrate fauna and is surprisingly comprehensive for such a diverse topic.
Book Description
Written in a way that makes the most complex findings of research understandable and usable in the real educational world, this book offers comprehensive coverage of all of the issues that are pertinent to teaching students with severe disabilities. The authors clearly and completely address both methodology and curriculum, presenting topics in the order in which a teacher would approach them: prior considerations, planning and assessment, general instructional procedures, and, finally, procedures targeted to learners with specific disabling conditions. In addition, they pay thoughtful attention to assessment, the role of paraprofessionals, and multicultural concerns. For teachers and future teachers of students with severe/multiple disabilities.
Customer Reviews:
Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities (3rd Edition) .......2007-09-28
I don't think that anyone will buy this book unless they have to. It has good up-to-date info on special education and how to do great things for these students, but I don't think many of the authors have worked in a real school in the last couple of years.
Introduction to Severe Disabilities 101.......2003-08-21
Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities is almost the best introduction a student can have to this field of education.
Drs Westling and Fox outline in each chapter another area you will encounter in educating students with severe disabilities.
Unlike some textbooks this book is not overly weighted with jargon,or written to a level that requires expert knowledge of the field to decipher it.Yet it can stand by itself as an introduction to your student population.
Until you actually student teach, such as I have, this will be your best source for understanding your students and their needs.
A Great Introduction to the Subject...........2003-08-13
As books intended to be textbooks go, this book by Westling and Fox covers the material without subjecting the reader to terminology which it does not explain.
It is broken up into well organized chapters, and reads well (meaning even a working professional can cover a chapter at a time without the book making them tired). It is not written in technical venacular, but in common sense terms most people interested in the subject can understand.
Unlike other books written in the field of special education it does not presume experience working with the children in question nor insult your intelligence if you are.
Most students should read this book before attempting any real fieldwork in the area of students with severe disabilities ( instead of as a textbook for a final class before student teaching as was my situation). It will give you a clearer view of the types of students you will be working with, and some of the ways to deal with them.
Book Description
In Volatility and Correlation 2
nd edition: The Perfect Hedger and the Fox, Rebonato looks at derivatives pricing from the angle of volatility and correlation. With both practical and theoretical applications, this is a thorough update of the highly successful Volatility & Correlation – with over
80ew or fully reworked material and is a must have both for practitioners and for students.
The new and updated material includes a critical examination of the ‘perfect-replication’ approach to derivatives pricing, with special attention given to exotic options; a thorough analysis of the role of quadratic variation in derivatives pricing and hedging; a discussion of the informational efficiency of markets in commonly-used calibration and hedging practices. Treatment of new models including Variance Gamma, displaced diffusion, stochastic volatility for interest-rate smiles and equity/FX options.
The book is split into four parts. Part I deals with a Black world without smiles, sets out the author’s ‘philosophical’ approach and covers deterministic volatility. Part II looks at smiles in equity and FX worlds. It begins with a review of relevant empirical information about smiles, and provides coverage of local-stochastic-volatility, general-stochastic-volatility, jump-diffusion and Variance-Gamma processes. Part II concludes with an important chapter that discusses if and to what extent one can dispense with an explicit specification of a model, and can directly prescribe the dynamics of the smile surface.
Part III focusses on interest rates when the volatility is deterministic. Part IV extends this setting in order to account for smiles in a financially motivated and computationally tractable manner. In this final part the author deals with CEV processes, with diffusive stochastic volatility and with Markov-chain processes.
Praise for the First Edition:
“In this book, Dr Rebonato brings his penetrating eye to bear on option pricing and hedging.… The book is a must-read for those who already know the basics of options and are looking for an edge in applying the more sophisticated approaches that have recently been developed.”
—Professor Ian Cooper, London Business School
“Volatility and correlation are at the very core of all option pricing and hedging. In this book, Riccardo Rebonato presents the subject in his characteristically elegant and simple fashion…A rare combination of intellectual insight and practical common sense.”
—Anthony Neuberger, London Business School

Customer Reviews:
Very good but missing little things here and there.......2007-02-08
Although the author warns the reader in the Preface, that because he ran out of pages (come on it is more than 800!) he omited dealing with Copulas, it is still a pitty that a book about correlation does not present at least a small chapter on this new (state-of-the-art) area.
Everything else is very good, solid material with a good balance between maths surrounding the topic, explanations and worked out examples.
very informative and reader friendly.......2007-01-09
for the first time I really understood risk neutral probability, explanations are excellent. unfortunately I am only read about 10 chapters int he book, should spend more time with it.
