Book Description

No more punch lines that just slipped away. No more names on the tip of your tongue. No more senior moments! Drawing on cutting-edge neurological research, how to keep your brain alive: 83 neurobic exercises brings help to everyone whose memory is starting to slip. Devised by Dr. Lawrence Katz, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center, and Manning Rubin, author of 60 Ways to Relieve Stress in 60 Seconds, here is a regimen of mental cross-training that can be done anywhere, by anyone, at any time of day. The premise is simple: When you exercise the brain, you release natural growth factors called neurotrophins, which in turn enhance the brain's level of fitness. And nothing so easily stimulates the brain as breaking routines and using the five senses in new and unexpected ways. So if you're right-handed, wake up tomorrow and brush your teeth with your left hand. Or close your eyes before you get into the car and then get the key into the ignition. Every time you open a new circuit in your brain, it's like doing a round of mental sit-ups, without the pain.

68,000 copies in print.

Might well be a recipe for ulcers , heart attacks and strokes:
reminds me of the latest fad diet. The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet: Plus Dr. Tarnower's Lifetime Keep-Slim Program
Taking advantage of an aging generation of baby boomers who worry
about their future is somewhat reprehensible.
In my psychology class we had to study
a case history of monkey's that psychologists gave ulcers by " shaking things up a bit".
Stone age hunter gathers mostly lived to a ripe old age of 25:
so emulating them is probably very bad advise.
Point by point the book's prescriptions can be one for an early death
for people who haven't already taken good care of themselves.
The most important thing in keeping your brain alive
is not believing you are too old to think.
Distrust doctors trying to get rich by publishing
a cheap popular book without much real substance that you can read in 10 minutes.

"Keep Your Brain Alive" offers some fairly standard advice on how to keep the mind agile as one ages. You've heard it before--be social, learn new things and new ways of doing routine tasks, use all the senses. The unique aspect of this particular book is the suggested exercises, but here the author veers away from the practical a little too strongly for my taste. He's big on exercising the sense of smell, and recommends driving around with a bunch of bottles with fragrance soaked pieces of sponge. Then uncork a particular one when you pass a specific place to fix it more firmly in your mind. I think if I did this my husband would begin having serious doubts about my state of mind--with good reason! I thought some suggestions could be dangerous, such as wandering around your home with lights off to activate the other senses--not a good idea for an older person, just as "uncork bottle while driving" is not a good idea. The scientific explanations are excellent--very clear and easy to understand--but I'd take the exercises with a big grain of salt!

2 out of 5 stars Rip.......2007-02-14

I'm very disappointed with this book. It's based on fundamentally solid brain science and offers the following to strengthen your brain (i.e. build and activate new neural connections): "1. Involve one or more of your senses in a novel (new) context, 2. Break a routine activity in an unexpected, nontrivial way."

Basically, by breaking the routine and forcing yourself to learn new things or different ways of doing old things, new connections will develop within your brain and create thought processing and longevity benefits. If you're right-handed, start forcing yourself to use your left hand (I was taught this aspect almost 30 years ago). Take different routes to work. Start using other senses to take in data. You see a widget. You normally recognize it as such and move on. Here, it is suggested to pick it up, feel it, examine it, smell it, listen to it and more connections will develop. Go out and socialize. Nothing challenges the mind more than interacting with new people.

O.K. This is all good, valuable information. But the proceeding paragraph pretty much sums it up. The other 100 or so pages in this book are fluff, with examples of achieving novelty. This is appropriate for a magazine article, not a nine dollar book. In fact, it seems suspiciously similar to a recent Time article on brain science. Wow, this was churned out fast.

2 out of 5 stars Half the book was great the other half useless........2007-05-18

The first portion of the book was fabulous! I learned which supplements and foods support the brain. I learned about the way the brain works and what activities exercize it.
But the second portion- with the exercizes-- was really silly and very distracting.
For instance: Dr. Small instructs to visualize a very relaxing place. But every few seconds he talks with his own ideas about what is relaxing. As if the listener doesn't know what to visualize! I finally gave up when he went into hearing ocean waves... I am not soothed by ocean waves and in fact his chatter ruined the whole exercize for me. This guy seems to think that visualizing a relazing place is a new idea to the general public.
Also, the exercizes on the audio portion were downright silly! Really, really silly! Despite the ridiculous examples he wanted the listener to try I gave it a genuine effort. But his constant chatter just forced me out of the mood.
The exercizes in the book could work-- but the ANSWERS ARE ON THE SAME PAGE!! sorry about the caps but Come On! Who puts the answers to a puzzle on the same page as the puzzle itself?? I had to cover them, trying not to see them while I covered them, and then work from the book with half the space intended.
All in all this kit is Not of very good quality.

Final thought: It genuinely feels like this was slapped together and there was NO quality control.

3 out of 5 stars Review of "The Healthy Brain Kit".......2007-02-17

I recently ordered a number of books dealing with exercises to improve brain functioning. The most recent, and most expensive of the lot, was "The Healthy Brain Kit". A big attraction of that product was that it was "authored" by Dr. Andrew Weil, tne New Age guru of wholistic medicine, and Dr. Gary Small, Director of Aging at UCLA, and author of a number of books on research-based memory interventions. While the new kit has CD's, a workbook, and exercises, I really didn't find much in it that was different from previously published material, especially by Small, including "The Memory Prescription" which details his 14-day program at UCLA which includes nutrition, exercise, stress management, and brain stimulation exercises. If someone is just starting out with these materials, I guess the kit may be worthwhile, but if you already have previously published material, I'm not sure it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Mental Aerobics.......2007-02-09

Dr. Andrew Weil introduces Dr. Gary Small's course in mental aerobics. He discusses the importance of an anti-inflammatory diet, why it might not be a good idea to sleep next to an alarm radio and why lifestyle strategies may have a great influence on brain health as we age.

Should you take up learning a new language or learn to play a musical instrument? What will a daily walk five times a week do for your brain? Dr. Andrew Weil explains the problems of oxidative stress, trauma, toxic chemicals and stress hormones and how they affect long-term aging.

Dr. Gary Small presents ideas for developing memory skills. His fun brainteasers will help you remember "to do" lists and names as well as giving you the empowering feeling when you remember things you used to forget. Through visualizations he guides you through a number of lessons to enhance memory and it makes remembering things a breeze.

Since the brain does have some regenerative capacity and we are capable of learning throughout the entire span of our lifetime, all it takes is some effort in the area of learning, reading or doing something challenging like learning dance steps.

2 CDs, a 52-page study guide booklet and a set of 35 brain-tuning cards to remind you to do the exercises presented. The cards include information on learning to relax, learning basic memory tricks to train the brain to remember facts and a few cards for advanced memory training.

4 out of 5 stars great for "interior decorating".......2007-07-23

This is a nice product but it wasn't what I was hoping for in the end. I wanted/need something more like a 3-ring binder to hold samples, manuals, contracts, etc. This spiral bound book will hold small amounts of tiny paint chip samples and the like but there is not enough room in the pockets for much else. If you're looking for somewhere to record the ins and outs of your interior decorating escapades, this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool - Nice Design.......2007-01-19

I bought this book as we are building our first house this year and I wanted somewhere to record all the information regarding contractors, colours, fixtures, fittings, etc as we went along with the building process. I have to say that this book is perfect for that!

There's plenty of spaces to go through room by room recording all the information so you can really keep track of what's going in to your home. I also like the fact that after the build is over, I have places to record maintenance work done, information about the utility companies in the area, etc so I can use it as an ongoing tool and not just an organiser while the house is being built. There is also a great section for future planning towards the back.

I think what I like most about this book though is the design. It's great to look at inside, using modern designs and colours, with a useful pocket inside for bits and pieces (can't remember if there is more than one but there might be). I looked at a lot of 'homeowner' type journals (I spent a really LONG time looking) and found that this one looked the best as well as being the most practical tool for my purposes.

All in all, I think this is a great buy either for those who are building or those already in established homes.

5 out of 5 stars Helps keep everything straight.......2005-08-17

This book is awesome for any busy homeowner. There are suggestions for keeping organized as you do all types of renovations--everything from from painting to dry wall to new appliances. I love having one single place to keep all our paint chips, swatches, etc. It's so much easier than a blank notebook because they have lines for everything you need to record.

1 out of 5 stars You probably don't need this book........2004-07-17

I read about this book in a magazine and was eager to get it. Being a first time home buyer/owner, I really thought it would be a useful tool. When it arrived I was very disappointed. 1/3 of the book is devoted to dreams and plans for your house (I already have a notebook for that) and the rest is for writing down information about appliances, paint, repairs, etc. I returned the book and will be starting a notebook. A 3-ring binder will suffice for me. However, for an unorganized person this book might be great.

2 out of 5 stars a BIG PHARM representive making money off innocent people.......2007-06-12

I stopped reading the book after chapter 10 "drugs and supplements". Apparently the author has NO real understanding and NO clue how to improve the memory. He has read the research paper for sure but didn't NOT UNDERSTAND the meaning behind it. For example, he's promoting statin drugs for enhancing memory. OMG! we all know that statins deplete coQ10 level in your brain, as well as ALL steroid hormones/oil-soluble vitamins in your body! Every cell membrane in your body contains cholesterol, esp. BRAIN CELL! By depressing cholesterol , coQ10, vitE production, you're killing your brain. Ironically, he also listed coQ10 in his book as memory enhancer.
If you want to know which supplements can enhance your memory, I recommend Your Miracle Brain by Jean Carper. If you want to learn the technique in terms of how to memorize information, I recommend Quantum Memory Power: Learn to Improve Your Memory with the World Memory Champion! [AUDIOBOOK] [UNABRIDGED] (Audio CD) by Dominic O'Brien.
Stay away from the drugs! My regimen: PS 100mg/d, R-type alpha lipoic acid 100mg/bid, acetyl-L-Carnitine 500mg/bid, fish oil, 1 table spoon/d, B12 sublingual 1000mcg/d, B complex once/d, VitC 1.5 g/d, grape seed/skin exract: 60mg/tid. If you're older and have low energy, take American ginseng and royal jelly. also, exercise, exercise, exercise...

5 out of 5 stars Neurologist Recommended.......2007-05-13

My mom has been having problems with her memory and her brilliant neurologist recommended this book. The book has been extremely helpful to my mom! It is a must-have for anyone with memory problems!

5 out of 5 stars A surprisingly simple 14-day plan to keep memory alive .......2005-10-07

How can brain function be improved to contribute to improved memory? Dr. Gary Small provides a surprisingly simple 14-day plan to keep memory alive in The Memory Prescription: Dr. Gary Small's 14-Day Plan To Keep Your Brain And Body Young. Try the questionnaire which helps you rate memory function, or try some of the mental exercises. There's plenty of room for changing and customizing Dr. Small's plan -- an important key to improving individual needs.

5 out of 5 stars A Program to Help Mentally and Physically.......2005-07-15

As you can see by the title, Dr. Small, Director of the UCLA Center on Aging, has developed a program of diet and exercise that he says will improve your memory significantly in a program as short as 14 days.

The exercises he prescribes include both physical and mental exercises. The physical are minimal, low impact, exercises that lead you to believe that this is intended for a somewhat older audience. The mental exercises are not unlike those on I.Q. tests where you do problems in math, complete sequences, and so on.

As you might expect, these exercises are intended to be maintained on a regular basis for the rest of your life, or at least as long as you want to remember things and keep your body alive.

As a doctor, he can't resist talking about the drugs that are available to assist the aging population. Some of these are more in the area of diet supplements, some are prescription only.

All in all, this is not unlike the programs advocated by many physicians, just a bit more about mental agility than most. It's a new book, and the information relating to the latest studies of the brain and the newest drugs is here.

5 out of 5 stars Very Important reading.......2004-10-03

I've read somewhere that there are more than one hundred billion
neurons in the human brain, and that they all can communicate with each other via one or more linkages. For any of you who feel like your brain isn't linking up lately, try reading "The Memory Prescription" by Dr.
Gary Small. After following the Doctor's prescription closely to the
letter for a couple of weeks (okay, my diet strayed a little) and doing
all his recommended exercises, I can honestly say I'm pretty impresssed
with the results. I can't promise you that every neuron of the one
hundred billion in your brain will be positively effected after reading
this book. But I can promise you that your memory, as mine did, will
undoubtedly improve."
"Neuron" info from "Mozart's Brain and the Fighter Pilot" by Richard
Restak, which I also recommend.

Instead of buying "Making Memory Boxes" and "Making Journals by Hand", save some money and buy one book: "Making Memory Books and Journals by Hand". This book combines all of the projects above and then some.

All of these books have great projects and instructions.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful book.......2002-04-06

I got this book at our local library and loved it so much that I had to buy it. I've loved boxes my entire life and can hardly throw one away. I'm so excited about the prospect of making my own boxes in any size, shape and color that I want. I've looked through a few books on this subject, but this is the book I'll start off with. I appreciate her exacting yet easy techniques and recommendations for the best materials, like Davey board instead of lesser cardboards that will warp. She also gives a technique for making your own bookcloth which excites me as a quilter/sewer.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful & unique boxes, they make great presents.......2001-06-12

This is a wonderful book filled with beautiful, unique boxes. Though they can be a bit time consuming, none of the projects are difficult and they can easily be made by a beginning crafter with a little patience.

The book starts out with the essentials of tools, materials and adhesives. I found the adhesives chart, which compares 4 different adhesive types, very helpful. There are also recipes for paste and methyl cellulose. Binder's board (Davy board) is the basic structural element for most of the projects. Principles covered include grain direction, parts of the box, measuring, cutting, gluing, covering with paper and fabric and making neat corners.

There are 13 different box projects, including a buttonhole stitched box, jewelry box, postcard box, picture frame box, faux book box, ornament box, artist's portfolio and Victorian scrapbook. The directions are excellent and include a materials list and step-by-step instructions accompanied by clear demonstrating photos. A large picture of the finished projects is also included. Conveniently, there is a list of suppliers in the back.

This book is perfect for bookbinders, rubber stampers and scrapbookers, and makes a great addition to any paper artist's library. The boxes themselves make great gifts for your loved ones and will be treasured for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have!.......2001-03-27

This is a must-have book for anyone interested in the art of boxmaking. Barbara's vast teaching experience is reflected in the easy to follow step-by-step instructions which, when followed, will result in beautiful boxes. In the section on adhesives, Barbara takes the mystery out of the properties and usage of various adhesives (this section alone is worth the price of the book). You won't be disappointed in this practical and inspirational book.

5 out of 5 stars Get out the glue!.......2001-01-09

By the time I had finished the introduction to this book and flipped through the pages of pictures, I knew that I, a ten thumbed, visually illiterate artist wanna-be, could make a memory box. Mauriello's instructions are so clear ("Whatever you do to one side of a board, do to the other")and the photos so vivid and carefully organized to show all stages of a project that I felt confident that I could buy the correct tools and supplies and construct a box of my own design. And what's more, I think I would enjoy the experience. The book is inspiring as well as beautiful. I have given copies to three friends who make their own holiday gifts, and they too are eager to make boxes.

Book Description

Four beliefs keep individuals from solving their problems: a conviction of unworthiness, an assumption that change is risky, a sense of incompetence, and a perception that other people are more important. Part I of this workbook offers specific strategies to help overcome these inhibiting beliefs. Part II provides step-by-step instructions on assessing problems, brainstorming solutions, imagining consequences, and putting solutions into practice. 4 out of 5 stars Problem-Solving That Works.......2006-08-01

I've been looking for a good resource on problem solving for ages and finally found it in this (apparently overlooked) book. Countless other problem solving guides that I've found, and then discarded, offer only the most general advice and scattershot techniques. Successful Problem Solving, on the other hand, devotes at least half the book to exercises that help readers identify their own dysfunctional core beliefs (about competence, self-worth, safety and primacy of their own needs) that block their efforts to solve their most stubborn problems. This alone would be worth the price of the book.

What follows in the second half of the book is a proven step-by-step process for more effectively solving any kind of problem. This book is not for everyone, however (hence the four stars.) It requires active engagement in the exercises, a fair amount of time to think through the material, and a willingness to introspect, but for me paid off from the first few chapters in new insights, old resolutions kept and problems (finally) solved. I would recommend it to anyone with an intractable problem. This works.

It's the best I can find with a lock, but the spacing is a bit too large. I prefered the Hallmark ones of the past, but they don't make them with locks any longer. It's actually more of a journal than a diary.

This was a gift for my daughters friend. She loved it. Funky colors, nice paper, we bought a very nice pen to go with it along with a framed photo and she was thrilled.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Piece of Literature.......2007-08-31

Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down! I read for six hours straight. The believable plot line of a Poland girl before, during and after the holocaust both enchanted and terrified me. Her struggle to keep her true self unchanged throughout a series of historical, ungodly events captivated me. There are some raunchy, disturbing parts that would be wrong to look past as everything about the holocaust is. I highly recommend this book because even in drought there is a silver lining.

2 out of 5 stars Starts well, goes downhill.......2007-05-28

This is a reprint of the book "Songbird", so check it out if you want to read the reviews when this was first published.

4 out of 5 stars strong historical thriller.......2007-04-09

In 1975 Mia Levy lives the simple life of a kibbutz farmer near the increasingly hostile Lebanese border having fled her homeland and a radically different life over three decades ago. However, now her past has caught up to her as clarinet player Vinnie Sforza sends her a letter stating he saw her in a Pathe newsreel working in the Israeli fields and by the time she reads his note, he will be airborne to see her so that they can remember the good but short time together in Brooklyn or perhaps be kicked out by her.

Mia looks back to fleeing Poland where in 1939 she went from a talented teenage pianist to being "that Jew" forced to play Hitler's Wagner instead of her beloved Chopin. Her father sold diamonds to get the family passage to the allies, but they were betrayed and placed on a train to Treblinka. As far as she knows only she escaped by fleeing to America where she met Vinnie. Unsure whether she can truly love someone again, Mia, obsessed with her family probably dead in the death camp, leaves Vinnie for Paris as an undercover operative helping the allies by becoming a dominatrix servicing Nazi customers. Now Vinnie is coming to see his true love.

The description of life in Poland in the late 1930s and early 1940s is incredibly detailed, vivid and harrowing as readers will wonder how people can do this to other people in the name of God and Hitler. Just having Chopin replaced by Wagner symbolizes how much the Nazis cleansed impure races especially the Jews. The small segue in New York is also deep as the impact of the horrors on Mia's soul overwhelm her love of music and of Vinnie. Though the Paris take turns too raunchy, historical readers will appreciate this powerful reminder that any form of human cleansing is an abomination. Note this is a reprint of SONGBIRD.

4 out of 5 stars Just right .......2007-02-13

I love this book because: The pages are removable so I can take out the ones that are not applicable. I am a single Mom and the book does not talk about Mom and Dad so it will work for any kind of family. I am not a big fan of the front cover, however i am handy and plan on making fabric covers for my boys books.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed but satisfied.......2006-12-22

I looked at many books before deciding on this one. I chose "This is Me" because I adopted a 5 year old and don't know all the "first year firsts".
My biggest complaint is the book I received was for a Russian adoption. I've looked at my order slip and the item online and can't find where it specifies for me to choose the country. That takes out 7 pages (Tell me about my native country, visits in the baby house, maternity hospital, orphanage visit, favorite things about the country, citizenship ceremony& why did you adopt from Russia).
The pages are very bland. It's the same page throughout the book. White paper with lines to write on and a set of handprints for a border on the side. For the price it would be nice to have a little variety.
On a positive note, I LOVE that the pages are removable. It has alot of pages I can use. There are pages for birth parent information, 2 family trees, celebrating birthdays 1-18, school years from preschool to 12th grade, health information, why did you adopt me, placement & finalization days, favorite things, important people, activities, religion, first things with new family, etc.
Overall, I am satisfied with this book and the things I like outweigh the things I don't.

1 out of 5 stars Book is Mislabeled in Warehouse.......2006-11-19

Apparently there is an error in the barcoding and/or labeling in the warehouse. I have twiced received the wrong book (And Then There Was Me), when trying to order "This Is Me." The book I have received has two barcode labels on the back cover, one for each of the books. PLEASE, PLEASE, correct this error so other customers can receive the book they order. The quality of the book I have received is very nice and I really like the listed content pages of the book I am trying to order; I just wish the two could get together and I could have received the desired book by the baby shower date. Alas, no such luck. PLEASE CORRECT THIS!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-03-17

This is a perfect baby book for any adopted baby. It has so many removable pages so that you can really tailor it to your adoption situation. There are pages for information on birth family trees, foster care givers, lawyers, judges, social workers, etc. I am impressed with all of the things that will help us to document our adoption story accurately. I looked and looked -- read so many reviews -- before I ordered it, and I am so happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2005-12-02

I have been wanting to find a good "lifebook" for my recently adopted sons, who are 2 and 3. We adopted from the foster care system and this book is perfect! The pages have room to record info about their previous foster family as well as a page for the details about the adoption ceremony and a page of "firsts" too. I also liek the expandable format and pocket pages at the end for little mementos etc...

Book Description

This is the true story of a man's lonely triumph over adversity. Ernest C. Brace was a decorated Marine pilot, the first to fly one hundred missions in the Korean War. A little more than five years later, however, a fateful accident and a hastily made decision stripped him of his rank, and he was dishonorably discharged from the Marines.

Vowing to regain his lost honor, he flew secret supply missions to Laos as part of a C.I.A. operation during the Vietnam War. Captured in a surprise attack by the Pathet Lao, Brace was imprisoned and brought to an isolated outpost in North Vietnam, where he was confined in a bamboo cage, his head, hands, and feet bound. Though a civilian, he made it a point to live by the Military Code of Conduct: he resisted the enemy whenever he could, and attempted escape three times. But each run for freedom only led to crueler torments upon capture.

In this extraordinary memoir of courage, sacrifice, and the will to survive, Ernie Brace recounts his experiences in a way that is stirring, inspiring, and memorable. A CODE TO KEEP is destined to stand out as one of the key documents of America's involvement in Vietnam.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Remember the 1808!!.......2006-02-09

"A Code to Keep" is the story of Ernest C. Brace. Brace was a former Marine pilot, who left the Corps in the early 1960s under a cloud. His plane had crashed on a training mission in Maryland and Brace simply abandoned the aircraft. In May of 1965, he was flying for USAID in Laos when captured by the Pathet Lao. Any connection to the CIA is unmentioned. He was soon turned over to the North Vietnamese and went on to suffer nearly eight years captivity until the general release of the POWs in the Spring of 1973. Though a civilian, Brace comported himself as a military man. Though not mistreated as badly as many fellow POWs, Brace sought no special privileges his civilian status might have given him. Every POW tale tells its' own special story and CTK is no different: CTK relates the continuing struggle of senior POWs to maintain a command structure in prison and to minimize any cooperation with the North Vietnamese captors. Senior POWs as McCain, Risner, Stockdale are here, as are other brave high raking Americans in Hanoi's captivity. So too is WO John Anton, author of the excellent "Why Didn't You Get Me Out?" Brace deals less with the aspect of torture and mistreatment than other POW tales. He even portrays an almost neutral attitude toward his captors. Brace is also somewhat benign to those Americans who cooperated with their captors. He labels them "The Peace Idiots" rather than "collaborators". Perhaps the author has come to terms with these folks. Moreso to his credit. What bothered and disturbed this reviewer about CTK is Brace's status as a Laos captee. Only 9 Americans, Brace included, were ever repatriated alive from that mysterious country. All were released through Hanoi. The remains of close to 200 more men were also returned. Some 450+ are still unaccounted for! The author makes it crystal clear that the Laotian captees in Hanoi were justifiably worried that they would never come home. NVA Officers only encouraged that fear. Neither side wanted to admit having troops there! The affected Americans dubbed themselves LULUS - The Legendary Union of Laotian Unfortunates. Only a last minute intervention by President Nixon had the Lulus repatriated on schedule in 1973. RN remains the only American President to seriously address the POW/MIA issue. As of January 1, 1808 remain missing in 5 Asian countries. The bottom line is that CTK is yet one more solid entry of POW epics. A star is deducted for that old and ongoing malfaction: no Maps! Brace was so deep in the Laotian boonies that even a Rand McNally map does not help place him! Brace made a long trek to Hanoi; a decent map would have helped document his journey to ultimate freedom. As it says above, each tells its' own story. CTK yields yet another vantagepoint into that long Indochina War that affected so many of us. Fortunately for all, life does indeed go on after repatriation.

4 out of 5 stars Survival against many odds.......2005-03-01

Among the very many Americans who were captured in Laos during the Vietnam War, Ernest C. Brace was among the handful few who came home. Brace was captured in 1965, and he wasn't allowed to return back home before 1973. While he was in captivity he was tortured and for many years he was held in a small bamboo cage. At one point this kind of treatment made him unable to stand on his feet.
Later on he was moved to Hanoi and after a while allowed company with fellow American POWs. The first American he came in contact with was John McCain. He taught Brace how to make use of his tin cup to make Morse signals. In this way the prisoners were able to communicate. Later on he was moved into a cell accompanied with other POWs who had been captured in Laos.

One of the things I liked the most with this book was that it had a happy ending. When Brace arrived home he once again proved that he was a survivor. He managed to survive freedom. The homecoming was a shock to him, since his wife had remarried and despite knowing differently, told the children their father was dead. Ernest C. Brace gives a lot of praise to his second wife, Nancy. She came into his life while he was still in hospital. His younger children moved in with them, and Ernest Brace got a new job and a career.

Ernest Brace ends his book in 2001 by telling us that he retired in 1993, and there is a photo of him together with M. and Raisa Gorbachev taken the same year. He tells that it was taken when he was asked to accompany the Russian couple on a trip from Washington D.C. to San Francisco.

Ernest Brace is a man who survived against the odds. This is a captivating book that makes you sit down and think long after you have finished it.

5 out of 5 stars Honest and chilling.......2004-11-13

A unique perspective from a civilian prisoner of war in Vietnam, giving new meaning to semper fidelis. Well written and hard to put down.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for Second Chances.......2004-09-27

Teriffic!! Couldn't put it down. I read this book over a year ago, loaned it out to several people and have still never got it back. It made a big impression on me and I still can't get it out of my head. I've read virtually every book by former POWs in Vietnam but this one is entirely unique because of the bizarre background that Mr. Brace had prior to becoming a POW. As an attorney in the Army JAG Corps, I've both defended and prosecuted soldiers for committing crimes and misconduct similar to that of Ernie Brace which resulted in his court-martial conviction and dismissal from the Marine Corps. This book, written in total humility with no pretensions, really shows that we can all redeem ourselves and regain our honor and character, regardless of whether we have used poor judgement in life. It also helps to put a lot of what we consider to be "problems" in their proper perspective. Realizing what he went through, most of our hangups today are nothing in comparision. This is a great book to teach people about character, without stuffing it down your throat and being pious. It also has a fantastic ending.

5 out of 5 stars The portrayal of a real hero..............2003-05-05

Former marine pilot Ernest C. Brace was employed as a U.S. contract pilot for USAID, flying in Laos supporting Vietnam war efforts, when his airstrip was overrun by enemy forces in May of 1965 and he was taken captive.

In his initial 3 years of captivity in Laos, Brace would be held alternately by Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese troops. Suffering inhuman conditions and being caged like an animal, he would end up attempting 3 daring escapes earning him brutal beatings and subsequent injuries that would affect him the rest of his life.

Upon being transferred to North Vietnam, Ernest Brace would continue his last four and a half years of imprisonment in the Hanoi Hilton, Plantation, and Briar Patch prison compounds. While confined in these locations, though not obligated to do so, he honorably followed the U.S. serviceman's code of conduct earning him the respect and admiration of all the American prisoners he was with.

Although never tortured like other POW's, Brace would risk this many times as he became a major junction for communications between prisoners which helped boost morale and also heightened resistance to captors. Offered early release due to his civilian status, he declined with the intention of only going home when the sum total of American servicemen were also released.

Upon repatriation from Vietnam in 1973, after almost 8 years in captivity (four and a half of those years in solitary confinement), Brace would find his return triumphant and bittersweet at the same time. Learning that his wife had remarried during his imprisonment and spending a full year in hospital visits to repair his injured body, he would eventually find success, happiness, and prosperity in the years to follow.

Ernest C. Brace, the longest held civilian POW of the Vietnam war, is a true American hero in every sense of the word and is an outstanding example of how patriotism, loyalty, courage, and inspiration are brought out in a person. So much so that he was awarded the highest civilian award given by the Department of Defense for his actions during confinement in Vietnam.

A Code To Keep is a well written and remarkable narrative on POW captivity and comes highly recommended to everyone.
