5 out of 5 stars Great to read to kids, fun for adults too.......2005-05-08

After I heard about this book on NPR, I had to get it. It was just as good as promised. The story is heartwarming and humorous, taking the reader on a journey with two cowboys who lost their favorite cow. It is also wonderfully paced so that after a few readings, children can chime in to say the cowboys' favorite meal ("Guess what?" "Beans!"). There is just enough text on each page so that children with short attention spans don't lose interest, and for children with longer attention spans, the beautiful and kid-friendly illustrations contain many fun details to discuss as you are reading. It's also typeset in big block letters that are easier to recognize for kids who are still learning the alphabet.

I bought this for my favorite nephew, but before giving it to him I ended up reading it through many times just to enjoy the story and pictures. I only managed to read it to him once, but in the thank you letter my sister wrote, "No one here reads the story quite like you do," and that makes me think he might have asked to have it read to him again.

5 out of 5 stars our favorite book of all time.......2005-03-08

this story is wonderful and so are remy charlip's warm illustrations. it's nice to read a book about cowboys where the cowboys are really nice guys and good friends and cry when they lose their beloved cow, grace. so sweet, especially the very last page where charlip has re-worded the song amazing grace to sing about grace the cow.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book.......2005-08-02

A previous reviewer said that this wasn't for beginning treehouse builders. I don't think that is the case at all.

I bought this book because I wanted to explore attachment options, and it had a chapter on that topic. There was so much more inside this book. There is a detailed description of a massive treehouse they built. Even though I never plan to build such a thing, the read was wonderful.

I was going to put a treehouse in our back yard. After reading the section on picking the tree, I realized that it probably would have killed the tree completely. My tree, which I saw as huge and tall and a great tree-house tree turned out to be very sick, and the book even pointed out why.

This is the kind of book that makes you want to sit down with the author and have dinner. His writing style is very conversational, easy to follow, and hard to put down. I wish I was fortunate enough, as those in the book have been, to have him come and build my treehouse.

This book is a great read and great value. I hope that he writes more of his treehouse adventures for us to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Highly reccomend for any treehouse builder.......2004-06-15

I live in a treehouse (corbin's treehouse), and I used a lot of techniques in this book when building my house. excellent book, and highly reccomended.

FABULOUS BOOK FOR THE BEGINNER WHO IS LOOKING FOR THE STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON "HOW TO BUILD A TREEHOUSE"- IT EVEN TELLS YOU HOW TO PICK THE PERFECT TREE. A MUST HAVE FOR ANYONE THINKING OF TAKING ON THIS KIND OF PROJECT!!!!

4 out of 5 stars detailed information for planning a serious treehouse.......2003-01-16

This is a book to read before you even decide what type of structure you want to build. This book is not a book of plans or a quick-read instruction manual of how to build tree houses. This is a serious book about the most important part of the process: the planning.

Nelson begs us to realize that first we must select the tree(s) and that the characteristics of the tree(s) will dictate what size and type of structure can be built. Nelson includes information about which trees are best suited for building in, taking their strength and growing characteristics. This is great information to know, and something I think my tree landscaping books don't include. We learn that the growth of some trees will actually crush the structure over time, while others are too weak to safely hold up a structure, let alone one with people inside it.

The key element in this book is safety. Nelson gives detailed information about how to build a structure that is safe to inhabit, whether it is a playhouse for children or an actual house for adults to use to work or live in. I was surprised to see that some of the tree houses in the book are for actually living in and working in!

Several different methods to attach the structure to the tree are outlined in detail. Exactly what type and how many tree "attachments" to use is explained, such as too many direct nailings into the tree will kill it. I think this information is key.

Looking at the plans for the tree houses in the book, I realized the quality of the workmanship surpasses houses that I have lived in. These are not quick slap-up tree houses, not the type where you use scrap wood that you have lying around. The houses featured have fine edgings, safe banisters and ladders for climbing, beautiful doors and windows. Some have balconies!

Anyone considering building a tree house should read this book first lest they waste their time building a tree house that later kills the tree, ends up being not-secure, or is flat out unsafe for people to use. As a non-carpenter, frankly I am feeling intimidated and doubt I have trees on my property that are worthy!

2 out of 5 stars complicated book.......2001-07-26

Hard to read. It only has a couple of different designs for treehouses. This is for an experienced builder.

Do you know how the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River were first formed? How about the Great Plains and the Grand Canyon? Some people think these wonders were established by the forces of nature, but those folks clearly haven't heard of Paul Bunyan, the "strongest, smartest, and tallest hero of the tallest of American tall tales." Paul and his pal, Babe the Blue Ox, were responsible for creating all these geographic features as they worked their way west with their unusual lumber crew. Paul's adventures begin when he is just a baby (who can lift a cow over his head) and continue as he grows into the biggest lumberjack in the world. All the basic stories about Paul Bunyan are here in this rollicking tale, as well as a few inventive incidents added by author and illustrator Steven Kellogg.

Kellogg is well known for his stories about Pinkerton the Great Dane, retellings of classic tales such as Chicken Little, and illustrations for books such as How Much Is a Million? by David Schwartz. But Kellogg's most important contribution to children's literature is his series on American folk heroes, including Johnny Appleseed, Mike Fink, Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind Crockett, and of course, the tallest hero of the tallest tale of all--Paul Bunyan. A great legend and great fun. (Ages 5 to 9) --Marcie Bovetz

Book Description

Who was the largest baby ever born in the state of Maine? Who dug the Great Lakes? Who gouged out the Grand Canyon? Why, Paul Bunyan, of course, America's finest, fastest, funniest lumberman and favorite tall-tale hero.

Saccharine cotton candy. About the only "real" thing left from the folk tales is Babe being found during a blue snow and staying blue. My grandkids' great great grandparents came from a logging past. Am I going to use this book to introduce them to heir own history? Absolutely not.

Paul Bunyan is a great book to entertain anyone. You'll love it! When I first read it I didnt want it to finish it. Can you believe it?! Paul Bunyan is the greatest character ever! Paul Bunyan gets raced in the Wild West fighting through anything that gets in his way. So watch out and dont run into him because he'll knock you off your feet!

This is a very enjoyable story retold with the most captivating illustrations. The vocabulary telling this story is wonderful and is a great book to read to the young and an excellent book for the early reader. Children will enjoy this enhanced version! This is not a book to miss.

Students are sure to enjoy this hilarious account of how many of our nation's wonders were created. This tall tale has been "spruced up" with a rich and colorful vocubulary, and is combined with illustrations that will keep the reader coming back for discovery time and time again. Steven Kellog's series of tall tales are invaluable in the classroom as students experience various literary elements such as: genre, author/illustrators, and theme related impressions.

But McBroom knows he's got the better of the bargain when the pond dries up to reveal an acre of soil so rich that seeds spring up into full-grown plants in no time and even nickels grow into quarters.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the reluctant reader with a sense of humor!.......2007-09-01

This is one of the books that hooked my son into reading. He was in second grade, and was a pretty reluctant reader, in spite of my regular read-alouds and efforts to find engaging, "living" books for him. This book had him laughing aloud repeatedly, and he read it in one sitting. It led to a great discussion about tall tales and exaggeration, and I found some older classic tall tales for him to read.

After tall tales, my son read and loved "Mr. Popper's Penguins", another funny book, and the Beverly Cleary Ramona and Henry Huggins books, also funny but not quite so outlandishly. He also liked the Junie B Jones series, in fact, he read through those before Cleary.

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny.......2006-11-10

I had a copy of McBroom Tells the Truth as a little girl - too long ago to say. Its as wonderful today as it was then. Really fun for the littles if you can be a bit hammy and add a touch of southern drawl to your voice. My children Love them all!!!!

5 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS.......2006-09-17

My oldest gave this book such rave reviews that my husband started to read it. He couldn't put it down as he read it aloud to the rest of the family. Now it is almost time for my new seven year old to read it. I am looking forward to hearing it again. It is really funny!

5 out of 5 stars laugh riot!.......2001-05-27

a refreshing back to the basics book that makes kids laugh and gives parents a good grin. Fleischman and Blake are a great combo as they bring out the hidden world of rural backwaters and corny jokes. my kids are all ears and big eyes as I read, and they love to hear the tall tales get taller. we've never regretted buying this ageless classic.

5 out of 5 stars Mc Broom Tells the Truth.......2000-08-13

Sid Fleischman Came to me on accident. This book was a yard sale find. Because his words were so magical for me as well as my son, I had to find more. I wasn't disapointed when, at yet another yard sale I found McBrooms Ghost. It was so good. I read it to several children of various ages on a camping trip. Needless to say, it was all they could talk about. I've found Amazon carries all of the McBroom writings. I will purchase them all for my childs collection. These books may be old but I hope my son can pass them on to his children

Book Description

When Carol Chapman sold her home in Connecticut, she soon found herself on one of those roads less traveledÂ…and that has made all the difference. Arriving in Texas, she bought a ranch and created The Last Refuge, a sanctuary for unwanted dogs, cats, goats, and, most of all, for horses, mules, and donkeys that were destined for the slaughterhouse.

Meet Chipper, a chocolate Lab who not only participates in nursing horses back to health, but has also raised cats, lambs, and baby chicks. Learn how goats secretly yearn for the mountains of their ancestors and happily leap onto the hood of a car to illustrate that point. Follow Chapman around for a day and discover that itÂ's hard to get out of shape when caring for horses—if lugging what has to go in one end (massive buckets of water, sixty-pound bales of hay, and fifty-pound bags of grain) doesnÂ't keep a waistline trim, shoveling up piles of what comes out the other end will.

Grab a cup of coffee, pull up a hay bale, and enjoy ChapmanÂ's unconventional collection of earthy, hilarious, but always heart-warming and timeless reminiscences.

5 out of 5 stars Tall Ears, Short Tales.......2004-04-08

This book is written with love, warmth and humor. I sometimes laughed, sometimes cried, but always realized the author's love of horses and her dedication to end horse slaughter. May God bless her for the work she's doing for all equine!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend!.......2004-01-07

Join the author on her personal journey into the hearts and souls of neglected, abused, and unwanted animals. You'll meet lots of courageous horses looking for a second chance at life, and you'll also learn a little about a delightful Chocolate Lab who mothers horses, cats, and baby chicks.

Knowledgeably written by Carol M. Chapman, owner of The Last Refuge, a sanctuary for horses and other assorted creatures no one else wanted. Tall Ears & Short Tales is a compelling and informative look at one of nature's wonderful and often terribly abused creatures - the horse - and the extremely dedicated people who rescue, rehabilitate, and provide sanctuary for them. Respect, humor, and thoughtful reflections upon the horses' point of view combine to make a thoroughly fascinating assortment of anecdotes from a wonderful writer and true animal lover.

5 out of 5 stars "Must Read" for Animal Lovers!.......2003-12-23

This book is a "must read" for all animal lovers, and especially horse lovers. The author's warm style and insight into the minds of animals will draw you in and never let you go! "Horsey" people (of which I count myself one, according to the author's definition) will truly identify with the connection one feels with horses, and non-"horsey" people will get a wonderful taste of our side of the horse world.

The author's natural, relaxed attitude toward animals is further reflected in her general philosophy toward family, relationships, and life in general. She makes you want to come and visit The Last Refuge and have a chat over coffee and perhaps muck a stall or two...

5 out of 5 stars Get your kleenex ready!!.......2003-12-18

I have always been concerned about animals welfare. Especially cats. When I heard about Carol's book - I was only slightly interested. Boy!!! did I change my mind. I tried to read most of it on lunch hours but geeish... my eyes got red all the time-keep your Kleenex handy. Her style of writing puts you right there with the horse and feeling what he feels. It is extremely touching.

I promise you that whether you have ever owned a horse (I have not) or rode a horse (I have only once) -- you WILL feel differently about them after this book. You will want to run and hug each and every one you see.

It is easy reading - fun and touching. Interesting and joyful.
I recommend it for all ages -- adults and children. This is a must have book!!!!! Give to your friends and relatives -- maybe we can all make a difference in horses lives and they in ours.

5 out of 5 stars Sensitive and Heartwarming.......2003-12-13

This book is wonderful. The writing style is easy to follow and it touches on the feelings and wonders of living with animals in a gentle, caring way.

It's a must read for any horse or dog lover.

It makes sense that Groucho, master of the wise crack, a man who kept company with S.J. Perelman and George S. Kaufman, should be a wonderful author in his own right, but you won't know how wonderful unless you have this book. Its editor, Robert S. Bader, has collected the funniest essays, columns and letters that Groucho composed during his long career. Writing with a wit and love of non-sequitur that influenced the young Woody Allen, Groucho also displays real warmth of character in these short pieces, an abiding love of family and of living.

Book Description

Groucho Marx was a comic genius who conquered stage, film, radio and television. But he was also a gifted writer -- the author of a play, two screenplays, seven books, and over 199 articles and essays.

This collection presents for the first time the best of Groucho Marx's short comic pieces, written over a period of almost fifty years between 1925 and 1973 for the The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Saturday Evening Post, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and other newspapers and magazines.

Here is the one and only Groucho on his family, his days in vaudeville, his careeer, World War II, taxes, and other topics such as his love of a good cigar, his chronic insomnia, "Why Harpo Doesn't Talk," and "The Truth About Captain Spalding." The familar irreverence, word-play, and a dash of self-deprecation bring Groucho's wiscracking voice to life in these pages, firmly establishing him as one of the world's great humorists.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best of Groucho, literally!.......2000-10-11

Though best known as a performer, Groucho Marx always cherished the opportunity to express himself in writing. Robert S. Bader has collected a large number of his short works -- some of them autobiographical, others comic essays and letters -- most of which have never been published before in book form. Unlike the recent collection "The Essential Groucho," by Stefan Kanfer, which contained excerpts from Marx Brothers plays, films, and television shows, all the pieces collected here were written by Groucho himself (or were they? Bader's long, well-written introduction discusses the contributions of Groucho's silent collaborator, Arthur Sheekman). Not every one is a gem, but on the whole the collection is delightful. A "must" addition to any Marx collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not as funny as the Groucho Letters..........2000-04-30

5 out of 5 stars Reiner Resurrects Groucho for this Stellar Performance.......1997-07-10

Groucho was a funny man, we know that. He was an essayist, maybe we didn't know that. He wanted to be known foremost as a writer. Here's proof he should be.

This collection of Marx's essays is read by Carl Reiner. Reiner reads all of Groucho's works with a stunning facimile af Groucho's voice. It's as if Groucho himself has come back just to read this collection. Reiner's innate comedian's timing rounds out this performance making one of the best recorded performances I've had the pleasure of listening to.

Guaranteed to make a Groucho lover out of anyone. Even your kids..

Shortly after I finished this story, he wanted me to let one of the elementary teachers at his school read it to her fourth grade class. She enjoyed it so much; she suggested I get it published. She thought it made a great first chapter book for early readers. And a great bedtime story parents can share with their children. The story centers on a family moving into a new home. They also decide to add another member to their household. Their new young boy finds it hard to believe in himself, as most youngsters do. It takes a surprising turn of events for him to finally have the confidence to do what must be done. Thanks to encouragement from his older brother, he is able to truly become what he was meant to be. “Thomas The Treemaker” is about a boy discovering the power to believe in himself, while learning some pretty amazing abilities along the way. I hope you enjoy the story.

    Book Description

As the devoted readers of the series know, Qwill has been working on this book since The Cat Who Tailed a Thief. Now the tales are finally all compiled-legends such as "The Secret of the Blacksmith's Wife" and "The Trevelyan Curse."

In Short and Tall Tales, Lilian Jackson Braun introduces James Mackintosh Qwilleran and tells how he collected the tales. Qwill provides a preface for each legend, identifying the teller and the circumstances. And it is no surprise that the tales themselves are entertaining stories that reveal the off-beat "history" of Moose County.

Cat Who . . . fans will delight in reading these stories and anecdotes taken from the pages of the books they have come to love.

Fictional columnist James Qwilleran has finally completed his book showcasing the stories related to him by residents of Moose County-that famous region four hundred miles north of everywhere. With an introduction by Lilian Jackson Braun, this delightful volume reveals the offbeat "history" of Moose County-in never-before-published stories. It's a treat for old and new fans alike.

I like Ms Braun's work very much and would give each of her "Cat Who" books a five star. She is a wonderfu writer, who lets you see and feel her charactures and settings. I'm waiting for her next book.
    Sincerely,

4 out of 5 stars For Moose County Fans Only.......2005-11-06

Anyone who follows the "Cat Who" series is cognoscente of the fact that Jim Qwilleran, the human hero of the series, carries around a tape recorder in order to catch intriguing stories from Moose County. The former crime reporter keeps saying that he is going to write a book but never actually seems to get started until he finally edits up these stories and presents them in this book. At least that's the premise of this book, which only briefly mentions Qwilleran's two famous felines.

In order to enjoy, or even understand this book one will have to have read several of the books in the series. Otherwise Moose County 's quirky population and their stories will read like something from another world. Actually, UFO's and ghosts do play parts in several of the stories but there isn't a Bigfoot or lake monster in sight.

For the "Cat Who" fan however there are some very entertaining stories to be found in this book. Yes, several of the stories have been published within the series but some of these stories had only been hinted at before and were given flesh in this work. Once one becomes addicted to the antics of the denizens of Moose County every little detail of their lives sought after and consumed and this book provides more than a few tasty morsels. I may be in a minority but I thoroughly enjoyed this little book.

1 out of 5 stars Are re-runs worth the money?.......2004-12-28

Someone wanted to make a buck without coming up with a new book, and I confess I bit. OUCH! The short stories in this book are all cute, but I couldn't find one I didn't recognize: they are taken from the "oral histories" collected in the regular series, so if you are an avid fan, you have read these already. Do we really need all the "yarns" in one place? I think they add flavor to the mysteries, and are just fluff on their own. (Supposedly there is one short that is original, but it blends right in!)

    2 out of 5 stars Stories don't cut it.......2004-06-22

These 27 sketches or stories by Qwill, i.e. Braun, just aren't worth reading. They are superficial and self-consciously "cute," in almost every case. Perhaps Qwill just doesn't write as well as Braun. There's nothing more to be said.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Cat Who Mysteries.......2004-06-20

It's been a long while since I've read any of the "Cat Who" stories so perhaps their fuzziness in my memory weakened my enjoyment of this book of "articles" from fictional journalist James Qwilleran. I found most of them rather repetitive and dull. There were a few gems among lot, especially those involving cats, although even among the cat tales, there is some thematic repetition. I think Braun was trying for the quirkiness of the television show Northern Exposure but Moose County just isn't Sicily Alaska.

Mike Fink was king of the keelboatmen -- the strongest, rowdiest bunch of fellows ever to work on the Mississippi. Mike was a whole lot more than a keelboater -- yes, sir! He was a crack shot and the best grizzly and gator wrestler on the river. They don't make 'em like Mike these days, now do they?

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars All the classic tall tale elements.......2002-07-10

With "Mike Fink," author and illustrator Steve Kellogg gathers up in one story all the classic elements of an American tall tale: rasslin' with bears, lifting boats over one's head, leaping across great divides, kicking out the slats in one's cradle, and more.

Mike Fink is a young man with a lot to prove and a good heart. Kellogg endows him with burly good looks and a great big smile, even as he has to twist a few arms to get attention paid to his exploits. The cartoon-like illustrations are colorful and boisterous, which perfectly suits the rhythm of the text. Lots of fun for any kid who enjoys tall tales (especially tall tales with a Mark Twainesque flavor, as this has rivers and steamboats a-plenty!).

5 out of 5 stars An exciting story about early America.......1999-10-12

MIke Fink is a story with lots of surprises and great pictures.Mike was able to do many things that seemed impossible. If you want to read about a boy who was determined to get what he wanted, this is the book for you.Our whole class really liked hearing this story.

3 out of 5 stars This story fails to tell the story of the real mountain man........1998-07-31

It is clear that this is a tall tale as Mike runs away from home at age two days. The illustrations are very well done. BUT Mike Fink was a real person, and I would prefer a real story about the real character instead of this yarn. Kellogg could have made up a character and told the same story. It has nothing to do with the real Mike Fink.

    Book Description

Harvey Potter was a very strange fellow indeed. He was a farmer but not like any farmer you've ever met. He didn't grow corn, okra, or tomatoes. Harvey Potter grew balloons. No one knew exactly how he did it, but with the help of the light of a full moon, one friendly child catches a peek of just how Harvey Potter does it. And keeps some magic for herself.

"This is the best sort of fantasy imaginative, inventive, and believable. Harvey Potter is a wonder he's the owner of a genuine U.S. Government Inspected Balloon farm. And Nolen's tale about this man, narrated by the African-American girl who learns balloon-farming magic from him, is equally wondrous.... This title should sail onto every library shelf. May Nolen grow a bumper crop of books." School Library Journal.

    "Downright glorious."Publishers Weekly(starred review).

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book, especially if you work with balloons!.......2006-11-13

I was given a copy of this book as a gift from a fellow Balloon Artist! We work with party balloons every day, and what a delight it was to recieve Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm! I have since given copies to other Balloonies around the world and on every occasion they have been as delighted as me. The book is beautifully illustrated...the story magical! I look forward to the day I have a grandchild to read it to so that they will understand the magic of balloons!

    5 out of 5 stars Enchanting Tale.......2006-11-11

Harry Potter's Balloon Farm is an enchanting tale with marvelous pictures. A young girl is fascinated about Mr. Potter's balloons. She secretly spies on him one magical night to see how they are created. The drawings are vibrant and visually entertaining. My kids enjoyed finding the cat, cow, rabbit, chicken, T.Rex, and pig hidden on every page.

5 out of 5 stars great story. great illustrations........2006-11-11

This book will captivate your children while warming the hearts of those reading to them. The pictures are a pleasure for the senses and the story is one of mystery and fun. This book is always a favorite.

1 out of 5 stars Sick Hated this book.......2006-06-08

What kind of sicko writes a book like this? Horrible. Has dancing, chanting, mystic, magic, night time hauntings. All under the cover of a little balloon farm. You would have to be ignorant not to see it. You want your children reading something sick like this with undertones of everything that is bad. Go ahead. I hated this and threw it out. Dumb and the lady is right, bad grammer too.

5 out of 5 stars "How Can I Get Some Seeds From This Guy ?".......2006-01-15

Seed Catalogs have begun to fill up the mailbox and it sure would be exciting to have a harvest like Harvey Potter's! He has worked magic with a "conjure stick" and Mark Buehner's overflowing paint pot all of which add to the success of author Jerdine Nolen's book.

Adults may laugh more than the kids at the idea of a genuine "U.S. Inspected Balloon Farm" . . . and it is a sure sign that a Tall Tale has hit home when the 'elders' feel NOSTALGIC about a story, as if it had really happened. This story ranks taller than Paul Bunyan for me.

Reviewer mcHAIKU isn't the only reader to feel chagrin at not having been up that tree in Harvey's yard to learn the marvelous secret of his green & red & orange & yellow & blue & violet AND black latex gardening thumb. It isn't too easy to discover even one jelly-bean-black balloon but no one will mind searching over & over again through this earthy, laughter-filled book. We should all make notations to read "Harvey potter's Balloon Garden" on Earth Day each year!
