Book Description

Imriel de la Courcel's blood parents are history's most reviled traitors, while his adoptive parents, Ph+dre and Joscelin, are Terre d'Ange's greatest champions.Stolen, tortured, and enslaved as a young boy, Imriel is now a Prince of the Blood, third in line for the throne in a land that revels in beauty, art, and desire. After a year abroad to study at university, Imriel returns from his adventures a little older and somewhat wiser. But perhaps not wise enough. What was once a mere spark of interest between himself and his cousin Sidonie now ignites into a white-hot blaze. But from commoner to peer, the whole realm would recoil from any alliance between Sidonie, heir to the throne, and Imriel, who bears the stigma of his mother's misdeeds and betrayals.Praying that their passion will peak and fade, Imriel and Sidonie embark on an intense, secret affair.Blessed Elua founded Terre d'Ange and bestowed one simple precept to guide his people, love as thou wilt. When duty calls, Imriel honors his role as a member of the royal family by leaving to marry a lovely, if merely sweet, Alban princess.By choosing duty over love, Imriel and Sidonie may have unwittingly trespassed against Elua's law.But when dark powers in Alba, who fear an invasion by Terre d'Ange, seek to use the lovers' passion to bind Imriel, the gods themselves take notice. Before the end, Kushiel's justice will be felt in heaven and on earth.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2007-10-10

Words can hardly describe how amazing this book is. I'm not normally an avid reader but once I got a hold of this series I became instantly hooked! I attempted to read it nice and slowly so the book would last longer but I couldn't put it down once I started! Tears, laughter, sorrow - every emotion I could feel, I felt it while reading. Waiting for another book to come out is pure torture but worth every agonizing day.

Jacqueline Carey is a genius and an incredible author!

If possible, the tales keep getting better with every new book. This one is another page turner. Keep 'em coming Jacqueline.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-09-10

"Kushiel's Justice" is a sprawling adventure that begins where "Kushiel's Scion" left off. Not only does it surpass "Scion", but it is right up there on par with the earlier "Kushiel" novels.

Imriel has arrived home from his adventures in Tiberium and Lucca, and has finally read his mother's letters. The content of those letters only increases his tumultuous emotions, as Imriel continues to try to do the right thing, and to be good, in the hopes of making up for his mother's treachery. With his decision to wed the Cruarch's niece and secure Terre d'Ange's place in Alba's line of succession, he seems set on this path.

But neither he nor Sidonie reckoned on their explosive connection, as the two begin an illicit affair that, if discovered, could split the realm asunder. But they are young and unsure, and both hope fervently that their feelings will fade. And so Imriel goes forth to marry his Alban bride, Dorelei mab Breidaia, and forge a life as an Alban prince. There, he is caught in a web of Alban magic, as the country's oldest inhabitants struggle to discern the shifting future.

After a startling twist halfway through the book, Imriel's life is shattered and he embarks upon a mission of vengeance that takes him into unknown lands. That journey tests him and changes him in ways he could never have expected.

Words cannot adequately describe the beauty and mastery of "Kushiel's Justice". The story unravels and weaves and unravels again in breathtaking succession, leaving readers on the edge of their seats, wondering what will happen next. The power of Carey's descriptive prose is on display here, as she sets up new lands and new characters and guides us expertly through their histories and motivations. I loved the many intricacies in the plot, the way certain things tied together, and the way so many unexpected obstacles prove that such journeys are never easy. Imriel learns this, too, as even the man against whom he has sworn vengeance shows him that even an idea as righteous as justice or an emotion as clear as hatred is not always so simple.

During the course this book, we see Imriel at his best and at his worst. We see the nature of the Shahrizai and Courcel blood in him, as well as the influences of Phedre and Joscelin. We see him lose himself and find himself repeatedly, and we see the forging of a powerful young man who has finally come to terms with himself. Other main characters include:

Sidonie, in whom readers finally glimpse the subtle cracks in her cold exterior, the insecurities she has struggled with. There is not as much focus on Sidonie's individual character as there is on her interaction with Imriel, but we still see the strength and intelligence and compassion in the young woman.

Dorelei, who serves to ground Imriel and put things into perspective for him. I really enjoyed the portrayal of her character, and found it to be realistic and refreshing.

Alais, who finally comes into her own in Alba. Like Imriel, she begins learning more about herself and her heritage in "Justice", and an interesting groundwork is laid for her in the next novel.

Urist, the commander of the forces who serve Imriel as Lord of Clunderry in Alba. He's an experienced man who doesn't miss much, and his support of Imriel provides a nice balance during their travels.

Many other characters also make appearances throughout the novel, including: Ysandre and Drustan, and his heir, Talorcan; Eammon and Brigitta, and the Lady Grainne; Hyacinthe and Sibeal and their children; Maslin de Lombelon, with whom there's a surprising and satisfactory twist; and of course Phedre and Joscelin, who, despite their comparatively small roles, prove to readers that at heart, they are who they've always been.

I simply do not have enough good things to say about "Kushiel Justice". My only criticism pertains to certain repetitive phrases in the writing, which at times did become a little annoying, but in most places were easily overlooked. If the upcoming "Kushiel's Mercy" is anywhere near as good as this book, Carey will have ended her second "Kushiel" trilogy by setting a standard that few authors today can meet.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to the Kushiel series.......2007-09-03

We continue Imriel's story, and just like in Kushiel's Scion, his life is as full of adventure as Phedre's. While the story is about Imriel, we are still able to peer into Phedre's and Joscelin's lives. Imriel, in his own right, captures our heart as surely as Phedre did. This was an excellent addition the Kushiel series and leaves you wanting to know what happens next in Imriel and Sidonie's future.

5 out of 5 stars Developing Leadership is Crucial for Your Church.......2007-01-04

How are you going to find the manpower necessary to lead your church in outreach, evangelism, fellowship and worship? Rather than the traditional approach of a Nominating Committee who "strong arms" people into volunteering, a better approach is to help people identify their spiritual gifts, review their spiritual profile and seek a group of peers guidance on how to implement their ministry. This book and the leadership guide is an excellent resource to use. We have had two cycles in our church and are well on the way to a new era of church growth and better impact on our community.

Book Description

Hayley's parents disappeared when she was a baby. Since then, she has been raised and homeschooled by her grandparents. Grandad is overworked and travels a lot; Grandma is much too strict and never lets her meet any children her own age. When Hayley does something wrong—she is not quite sure what—they pack her off to her aunts in Ireland. To Hayley's shock, her family is much bigger than she thought; to her delight, the children all play what they call “the game,” where they visit a place called “the mythosphere.” And while she plays the game, Hayley learns more about her own place in the world than she had ever expected. This original novella by Diana Wynne Jones is sharply funny, fast-paced, and surprising until its very end—like all of this acclaimed author's work.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars NOT her best.......2007-08-13

Diana Wynne Jones is one of my favorite authors (Howl's Moving Castle is my personal favorite) but this book seemed like an idea for a story. The characters, while well researched, were not developed at all. I couldn't connect with any of them, not even the main character. Jones came up with some interesting ideas like the mythosphere, but that's all they were- ideas. After I finished the last page, I felt like I had missed a chapter somewhere. Over all, I was rather disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Not one of DWJ's best.......2007-07-20

I am a fan of Diana Wynne Jones, so when I saw that she'd written a new novel, I was excited. Unfortunately, this book fell far short of my expectations.

I think one of the main problems was that I couldn't identify with the character. We're not told very much about Hayley (presumably because Jones was trying to keep the true identities of the characters a secret until later in the book). I couldn't figure out how old she was, or anything about her that really mattered. I assumed, though, that she was about 10. The problem with that assumption, however, was that she then went and followed strange adult men into bushes, without really questioning the situation or her own safety. A similar theme appeared in "Fire and Hemlock", but that was written decades ago when child predators weren't as much in the news as they are today (and the main character in that novel eventually grew up, rendering her friendship with a man twice her age somewhat more acceptable).

I do appreciate Jones's creation of the "mythosphere", and I thought it was an interesting idea. However, I would have liked to see more of it. So many books for children today seem to suffer from a lack of editing. If anything, this book seemed to suffer from over-editing! It seemed as if large chunks were missing. Certain things were badly or barely explained. How could a wedding photograph of Hayley's parents even exist if they were as old as they were supposed to be? Why did Hayley have no memories of the world changing around her? Surely she would have noticed that computers, cars, and airplanes were relatively new inventions. How did she pin Jupiter to the sky when the planet was already there?

There also didn't seem to be much peril. Aside from the rather gory scene with the Maenads, the characters didn't seem to be in much mortal danger. And how could they be? Half of them were immortal!

Jones has been through this territory before in "Eight Days of Luke" (though with Norse mythology, while "The Game" is Greek mythology). However, there seems to be an awful lot of metaphor and symbolism here for kids to absorb. And while I enjoyed the unique "mythosphere" aspect, I really wanted to see all parts of the story more fleshed out.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Fantasy for young readers.......2007-06-05

It is hard to imagine a more creative or prolific author of young adult books. Diane Wynne Jones is the author of the Dalemark Quartet, The Chrestomanci Books, and about 40 others. This novella--longer than a short story, shorter than a novel--is part of Penguin's Firebird series.

Orphaned Hayley is thrust from the only home she knew, living with her grandparents on the outskirts of London. She is thrown into a maelstrom of activity with aunts and cousins she never knew she had in a large castle in Ireland. Her life in London was very lonely, with her only companions various maids and servants. Her strict grandmother thrust her out when she became angry with Hayley's "imagination," calling cousin Mercer to come and take her away.

Hayley discovers her many cousins also have vivid imaginations, and play a game where they travel the strands of the mythosphere on various quests. Hayley had first seen the mythosphere in her kindly but distracted grandfather's study. She accidentally runs into her father on one of her quests, in addition to Flute and Fiddle, two street musician acquaintances from her lonely London days. The villain of the story is angry Uncle Jolyon, wealthy and powerful, and responsible for making Hayley an orphan, due to a prophecy.

Will Uncle Jolyon track down the errant Hayley? Will Troy and Harmony, two cousins who try to save her, succeed? And who on earth are Flute and Fiddle?

Armchair Interviews says: This fascinating fantasy will engage young readers immediately with its vivid images and appealing heroine.

5 out of 5 stars Great story........2007-05-15

I have come to expect excellence from Jones, and this work is no exception. It is tightly written, exciting, and fun. I think it might help a little if one had, as I did, a classical education, since the story assumes certain characters from ancient mythology, but it probably would still be enjoyed by teens of today just as well as other adults.

4 out of 5 stars Too short.......2007-04-19

I liked this story, but it wasn't among my favorite Diana Wynne Jones books. I think that's because it was so short - a lot of things are left pretty vague, and while the concept is imaginative and creative with the best of them, I wished that there was more detail, to make this world more real. I guess I would call this story more "clever" than "immersive," if that makes sense. So, 4 stars for an interesting story, anyway :)

5 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2007-09-28

My daughter is one, so she is a little young for the target demographic of this book. She does however really enjoy it. This book is played with multiple times a day. She enjoys turning the large pages and lifting all of the flaps. My only qualm with this book is, that although it is large in size, it is not have many pages. Overall though a great book and I'm sure my daughter will enjoy it even more when she is old enough to really interact with it.

5 out of 5 stars Another hit from Maisy.......2007-03-29

Our 11 month old loves flap books and true to its title, this one is big. It's a little harder for her to turn the pages but with all those extra flaps on each page, it's a decent trade-off.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any Maisy fan........2006-08-21

My daughter can't get enough of this book. She could sit in front of it all day long, opening all the flaps and staring at all the details in the pictures. She is on a real Maisy kick, so I knew she would love it, but I had no idea how much. Three months after I first got it for her (she is 21 months now), I still know that it will hold her attention when I pull it out. That's a valuable tool for the mother of an active toddler!

5 out of 5 stars Maisy + Flaps = Winner!!!.......2006-06-26

My 2 year old loves Maisy! I got this book for him a year ago, and it is still a favorite. He has been able to tear some of the flaps off, like most of his flap books. Nonetheless we love the large size, bold colors, lots of flaps, simple images - a great buy!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR KIDS WHO LOVE THE FLAP BOOKS!.......2006-02-23

My 2.5 year old is a big Maisy fan, and LOVES all books with flaps! Thus, this purchase was a no brainer, and he loves it! His 5 year old brother likes it too!! Best thing is that the flaps are durable and not easy to rip-very important for us:-) Good purchase!

In Jennifer Egan's deliciously creepy new novel, two cousins reunite twenty years after a childhood prank gone wrong changed their lives and sent them on their separate ways. "Cousin Howie," the formerly uncool, strange, and pasty ("he looked like a guy the sun wouldn't touch") cousin has become a blond, tan, and married millionaire with a generous spirit. He invites his cousin Danny (who as an insecure teenager left him hurt and helpless in a cave for three days) to help him renovate an old castle in Germany. To reveal too much would ruin the story, just know that The Keep is a wonderfully weird read--a touch experimental in terms of narrative, with a hefty dose of gothic tension and mystery--balanced by an intimate and mesmerizing look at how the past haunts us in different ways. --Daphne Durham

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Jennifer Egan

Q: What is your writing process like? Has it differed from book to book?
A: My writing process seems to be a strange one, at least compared with other writers I've talked to. I begin with very little: usually just a strong sense of time and place--of atmosphere--and a few abstract notions that I want to explore. In the case of The Keep, I had a yen to set a book in what I'll call a gothic environment: an isolated, crumbling structure whose heyday is long past, and where eerie things begin to happen. As for the notions, I was curious about telecommunications: the way that cell phones and the Internet have made so many of us accustomed to nearly constant disembodied communication--a state traditionally associated with supernatural experience. I loved the idea of letting modern telecommunications collide with a gothic environment and seeing what would happen.

I write by hand--usually one long draft that I scribble out quickly (5-10 pages a day) and poorly. I do this almost completely from the gut, with very little sense of where I'm going. It's often in the process of this almost unconscious writing that I discover characters and action. When the first draft is done, I type it into the computer (the parts I can read anyway; I have wretched handwriting) and see what I've got. Not a word of that first draft usually makes it anywhere near the final draft--which, in the case of some chapters of Look at Me, my last novel, was sixty to seventy drafts later. I edit by hand on a hard copy, then type in the changes and print it out again for further editing. The writing itself always remains instinctive, but there is a strong analytical counterpart, when I figure out what I'm doing in terms of plot, characters, thematic underpinnings, and then scheme about how I can do it better. I save every draft until a book is done; a towering pile of paper that I eventually, joyfully, recycle.

Q: Some of the most powerful (and terrifying) moments in the book deal with claustrophobia. Are you claustrophobic?
A: I almost never write about myself, or things that have happened in my own life, or about people I know. I like to make all of it up--or at least, I think I'm making it up, until later I realize how much of my own experience has crept into my books, disguised even from me. For example: I'm not claustrophobic, but I've certainly been paranoid, and the two are closely linked. I wanted to capture the way that paranoia (like claustrophobia) can instantly turn a benign environment into an unmitigated nightmare. One question is always at the center of such experiences: is this real, or am I making it up? We live in very paranoid times. I was interested in the way paranoia can make someone turn threatening and aggressive in exactly the ways they perceive the world to be. They become the very monster they fear.

Q: What author/s have inspired you?
A: In the big, long-term ways: Lawrence Sterne, Jane Austen, Edith Wharton, Emile Zola, George Eliot, Robert Stone, Don DeLillo, Jean Rhys.
For The Keep, the list is slightly different. There are some fantastic (and totally insane) Gothic novels that I had a ball reading: Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, Charles Maturin's Melmoth the Wanderer, Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho, Matthew Lewis's The Monk--those are all 18th century books--and then from the 19th century, Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White, which is an absolutely drop-dead great thriller.

Book Description

From National Book Award finalist Jennifer Egan, author of Look at Me (“Brilliantly unnerving . . . A haunting, sharp, splendidly articulate novel” —The New York Times), a spellbinding work of literary suspense enacted in a chilling psychological landscape—a dazzling tour de force.

Two cousins, irreversibly damaged by a childhood prank whose devastating consequences changed both their lives, reunite twenty years later to renovate a medieval castle in Eastern Europe, a castle steeped in blood lore and family pride. Built over a secret system of caves and tunnels, the castle and its violent history invoke and subvert all the elements of a gothic past: twins, a pool, an old baroness, a fearsome tower. In an environment of extreme paranoia, cut off from the outside world, the men reenact the signal event of their youth, with even more catastrophic results. And as the full horror of their predicament unfolds, a prisoner, in jail for an unnamed crime, recounts an unforgettable story—a story about two cousins who unite to renovate a castle—that brings the crimes of the past and present into piercing relation.

Egan’s relentlessly gripping page-turner plays with rich forms—ghost story, love story, gothic—and transfixing themes: the undertow of history, the fate of imagination in the cacophony of modern life, the uncanny likeness between communications technology and the supernatural. In a narrative that shifts seamlessly from an ancient European castle to a maximum security prison, Egan conjures a world from which escape is impossible and where the keep—the last stand, the final holdout, the place you run to when the walls are breached—is both everything worth protecting and the very thing that must be surrendered in order to survive.

A novel of fierce intelligence and velocity; a bravura performance from a writer of consummate skill and style.

2 out of 5 stars Not Very Good.......2007-10-10

This was one of those books that I had been intrigued by since it came out. I liked the idea of a good gothic novel, similar to the 13th Tale, instead I felt empty and cheated when I finished this book. The Keep, by Jennifer Egan, is not a very good book. There were so many different characters and plots going on; however, none of them were that good. I do not think there was one sympathetic character in this novel. There certainly was not one character that I cared about. There was one clever plot twist that turned this into a Two star book for me, rather than a One star novel. I would not recommend this book.

I really am not even sure why the term gothic has been used to describe this book. Much less as a Tag. The only thing gothic about the book is that there is a castle. Heck, you can get that from a variety of novel. This is the worse book I have read since Hawkes Harbor by S.E. Hinton.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Engaging.......2007-10-01

I was very impressed with Ms Egan's writing. This was my first book by this author and it won't be my last.

I feel this story left a lot to my imagination-and I liked that.As I read each page I could picture the characters forming and taking shape in my mind. I don't get this with every book.
I was completely taken in with this story and would recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Who's On First?.......2007-09-29

A keep is a fortified place or a stronghold at a castle. It is a safe place in case of danger. Each character had a personal stronghold or secret;a mental keep.
This unusual book is two stories intertwined. One is the prisoner, Ray. He is writing a gothic tale about two cousins meeting in Europe to renovate a castle with a keep.
His story, their story and his writing teacher's story knit into a good read.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but ultimately disappointing.......2007-09-20

I suspect that the title reveals how I feel about this book. There's no doubt that it is well-written, with fully delineated characters, and a complicated plot which keeps the reder interested from the first page almost to the end. It's that "almost" place that troubled me, and led to the 3 star rating. Shortly before the ending, the whole plot just fell apart for me, and I almost stopped reading, but I wanted to get to the end so that I could give an honest review of the whole book. Remember, my quarrel with the last several pages may be personal to me, and you may read this book and thoroughly enjoy it. That's the beauty of these reviews; you don't have to accept as "gospel" what we say. I encourage you to read and find out for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Great read but ultimately disappointing.......2007-09-13

I'm disappointed, almost to the point of being offended. It's obvious the author is exceptionally talented at creating characters and keeping the plot moving so that I just had to stay up late in the night to finish. But she left so many loose ends and wrote uneccessary diversions. It seemed as if she tried to pack in far too many plot devices of various genres which left her novel without cohesion. All action in a novel should have a point -- what was the point of Danny's rendevous with the Baroness? And what was the point of her changing ages? And was that town a made-up place? We're just meant to believe that Howie and his family run their hotel now? And the motivation for the murder? Come on, to stay number 2? That's just not believable. I can think of so many more instances of loose ends (and who really cares about Holly or wants to? That tacked on ending was uneccessary). I was completely ready to recommend this book to all of my friends, but after finishing, I'll spare them the disappointment.

Griggsby Wright, MD says:

This book has fantastic illustrations relating to anatomical structures, creating a 3-dementional appreciation for technical approaches and interventions. However, the genre of this book is limitless by actually getting down to the molecular aspects of theory and practice.

This book boasts an extensive compilation frameworked within a superior format.

Summer Boys by Hailey Abbott is about three girls and one dramatic summer that will change their lives forever. Jamie, Ella, and Beth Tuttle are cousins who have spent every summer at Pebble Beach since they were children. Jamie found a boyfriend, last summer, but now she feels like he is holding something back. Ella has found a boyfriend for the summer, which would be great if he wan't involved with her sister. Beth has always loved George as a friend, but now she starts to realize how cute he looks.

Summer Boys is a realistic teen dramam that sucks you in from the very first page. The alternating third-person chapters let you see every event in gripping detail. Book Description

A sweeping, anecdotal account of the great sounds and voices of radio–and how it became a bonding agent for a generation of American youth

When television became the next big thing in broadcast entertainment, everyone figured video would kill the radio star–and radio, period. But radio came roaring back with a whole new concept. The war was over, the baby boom was on, the country was in clover, and a bold new beat was giving the syrupy songs of yesteryear a run for their money. Add transistors, 45 rpm records, and a young man named Elvis to the mix, and the result was the perfect storm that rocked, rolled, and reinvented radio.

Visionary entrepreneurs like Todd Storz pioneered the Top 40 concept, which united a generation. But it took trendsetting “disc jockeys” like Alan Freed, Murray the K, Wolfman Jack, Cousin Brucie, and their fast-talking, too-cool-for-school counterparts across the land to turn time, temperature, and the same irresistible hit tunes played again and again into the ubiquitous sound track of the fifties and sixties. The Top 40 sound broke through racial barriers, galvanized coming-of-age kids (and scandalized their perplexed parents), and provided the insistent, inescapable backbeat for times that were a-changin’.

Along with rock-and-roll music came the attitude that would literally change the “voice” of radio forever, via the likes of raconteur Jean Shepherd, who captivated his loyal following of “Night People”; the inimitable Bob Fass, whose groundbreaking Radio Unnameable inaugurated the anything-goes free-form style that would come to define the alternative frontier of FM; and a small-time Top 40 deejay who would ultimately find national fame as a political talk-show host named Rush Limbaugh.

From Hunter Hancock, who pushed beyond the limits of 1950s racial segregation with rhythm and blues and hepcat patter, to Howard Stern, who blew through all the limits with a blue streak of outrageous on-air antics; from the heyday of summer songs that united carefree listeners to the latter days of political talk that divides contentious callers; from the haze of classic rock to the latest craze in hip-hop, Something in the Air chronicles the extraordinary evolution of the unique and timeless medium that captured our hearts and minds, shook up our souls, tuned in–and turned on–our consciousness, and went from being written off to rewriting the rules of pop culture.

5 out of 5 stars An Absorbing and Enlightening Page-Turner, with Few Errors.......2007-09-30

I had to read this book twice. The first time I started with the Jean Shepherd section, then skipped around. After I made it through all the pages, I didn't want the book to be over, so I read it from beginning to end. That is how absorbing Something in the Air is; Fisher has put together fascinating strings of anecdotes and facts, well-cemented with narrative and a bit of his own opinion, and given us the evolution of radio as experienced by listeners, station owners, management, deejays, and other air personalities, and he's shown us all the angles--legal, commercial, esthetic, and ethical.

The book won't please everyone, and anyone who reads it is going to say "What about ____?" and "Why didn't he tell the story of _____?" The answer to that is, of course, that everything wouldn't fit into the book. Having written quite a bit on radio history, I can tell you that Fisher's research and interviews probably left him with half again as much material as he put into the book. That's always the burden of the competent author: what do put in and what do I leave out?

As other reviewers have pointed out, there are a few errors here and there. I won't dwell on those; the book is so valuable that they are of little consequence. It would be nice if the author posted an errata sheet at his blog, though.

And I have to say that the story of the WOR I, Libertine hoax that Jean Shepherd and Ian Ballantine perpetrated, aided and abetted by Theodore Sturgeon's ghost-writing, is worth the price of the book on its own. And there are other anecdotes that equal that one.

Fisher might have overdone some of the topics, falling at the feet of radio "gods," for instance. But I was pleased to see that he didn't harp on Don Imus or Howard Stern to please readers, nor did he haul out other celebrities the way some overly self-conscious writers feel obligated to do when writing about the famous.

Did I mention how good the writing is? Good enough to keep you turning the pages. Fisher is a good stylist. He also has a journeyman technique, as illustrated by the fascinating build-up to Rush Limbaugh's triumph. Among other things.

There's nothing more to say, other than this book does for radio what Michael Korda's Another Life did for book publishing.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely riveting.......2007-08-27

This is less a review and more an enthusiastic recommendation. As a Brit, many of the presenters' names in this book (apart from, say, Stern and Limbaugh) meant little to me but I still found this book absolutely unputdownable. This is testament to a) my radio "geekiness" and - more importantly - b) Marc Fisher's skills as a writer, historian and storyteller. A fascinating history of radio in the US with many a good story tucked away in the endnotes. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars what an amazing book.......2007-07-24

Everyone should read this compelling book by Marc Fisher. It brilliantly uses radio to tell the story of Americans in the last several decades. Funny, powerful, commanding, and lyrical, Fisher is a beautiful storyteller.

5 out of 5 stars This one's for the radio geeks.......2007-07-08

For anyone who's interested in the history & future of radio, look no further-Marc Fisher has written the ultimate history of the medium-Definitely worth your time & money.

5 out of 5 stars All Hail Rock 'n Roll!.......2007-06-20

Simply stated, "Something in the Air" is the best book on Radio I've ever read. Congratulations to Marc Fisher on a wonderful skip through time without a single trip. Excelsior!"

Book Description

The best-selling, groundbreaking classic by Norman Cousins on combating life-threatening illness through humor and patient participation in care.

Anatomy of an Illness was the first book by a patient that spoke to our current interest in taking charge of our own health. It started the revolution in patients working with their doctors and using humor to boost their bodies' capacity for healing. When Norman Cousins was diagnosed with a crippling and irreversible disease, he forged an unusual collaboration with his physician, and together they were able to beat the odds. The doctor's genius was in helping his patient to use his own powers: laughter, courage, and tenacity. The patient's talent was in mobilizing his body's own natural resources, proving what an effective healing tool the mind can be. This remarkable story of the triumph of the human spirit is truly inspirational reading.

5 out of 5 stars Timely story if you or someone you know is fighting the battle.......2007-09-16

A superior read and what I needed when I was making the journey to surviorship from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (1991). Encouraged me to focus on the task that was at hand rather than spiraling into darkness. For what it is worth, read/give this and don't buy/read the Love, Medicine & Miracles (B. Siegel, 1986), which subtly implied all bad things happen because of a negative attitude. Guess what folks, if you are diagnosed with cancer or other life threatening disease, you are going to have a lot of crappy attitude days and then panicking because you just had a negative thought is a bit counter-productive.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading in medical school.......2007-07-15

I don't recall when this book was first published, or who first told me about it. But, it definitely improved my outlook on things several decades ago when I was quite ill--not incurably, or terminally, but a grave cost to quality of life, all the same.

Reading this, in the early 1980s, I think, was the first time I'd realized that my own attitude could actually make a difference in the outcome of my health, and the rate at which my injury healed. It was a revelation--one that several doctors were not to pleased to hear--and one which helped me enormously.

Of course personal attitude is far from everything. Having lost a friend to Hodgkin's--which was totally curable when he was diagnosed in early stage one--I'm painfully familiar with the risks individuals sometimes take in believing in phony spiritual cures and natural methods.

Still, there's a lot more to be said for state of mind and good humor than many physicians are willing to admit, or discuss with patients, even now. If this book is not assigned reading in the first year of medical school--and every year after--it should be.

4 out of 5 stars Gina.......2006-11-08

My husband has been very ill over the last 7 years and although the doctors were sure he's be dead by now... he's not and doing better every day. He has Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, ITP, Lymphodema, as of now, everything it either in remmission or under control and I believe this book "Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient" and "Cancer: 50 Essential Things to Do: Revised and Updated Edition" and "Getting Well Again: The Bestselling Classic About the Simontons' Revolutionary Lifesaving Self- Awareness Techniques" As well as the DVD "the Secret" have not only made a difference in his health, but in our lives and those of our family.
Keep things in prospective, give it to a higher authority and LAUGH!

5 out of 5 stars Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient by Cousins.......2004-05-14

This work contains numerous strategies aimed at maintaining
health into the far future. For instance, the author explains
how cancer occurs more frequently in patients with significant
grief, anger or fear in their daily lives. He indicates the
importance of physician contact with the patient. The importance
of a balanced diet is articulated. The author decries poor
nutrition in some hospitals . i.e. white bread and bleached flour
Specific medical tests are referenced i.e. SED RATE
The sed rate is the speed with which red blood cells settle in a test tube measured in milli-liters~ severity of inflammation.
He explains the importance of Vitamin C in collagen maintenance.
This work would be valuable for any middle-age or elderly person
seeking to maintain health far into the future.

5 out of 5 stars Started the mind-body revolution -- still relevant.......2004-01-05

This book revolutionized the way Americans think about health and health care. Diagnosed with a life-threatening and incurable condition, Cousins checked himself out of the hospital and basically healed himself with laughter, rest and Vitamin C. A few years later, he recovered from a major heart attack on his own and wrote about that, too.

These books jump-started the whole field of mind-body medicine. Hundreds of books have followed in its tradition, including mine, The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Illness. Anatomy of an Illness holds up well. I just re-read it and it's still relevant.

Not everything here will apply to most readers, because Cousins was a major cultural figure with many physicians among his friends. Not everyone would have his self-confidence or his sources of support. But his ideas and his approach are more needed than ever today.
