Book Description
From emerging technologies to changes in consumer tastes, tremendous opportunities and threats often begin as weak signals from the periphery
How good is your organization at sensing, interpreting, and acting on these signals?
George S. Day and Paul J. H. Schoemaker call this capability peripheral vision—and their research shows that less than 20 percent of firms have developed it in sufficient capacity to remain competitive. In this book, they reveal a systematic process for developing peripheral vision and offer practical tools and strategies for building “vigilant organizations” that are constantly attuned to changes in the environment.
Through detailed case studies ranging from LED lighting to low-carb foods to children’s dolls, the authors show how vigilant organizations win by: scooping widely and asking the right questions; scanning actively in the right places; interpreting what signals mean; probing carefully for more information; and acting wisely on signals before competitors do.
This book will help your organization see farther to seize the opportunities and avoid the risks that come from the periphery.

The Vision of Experience.......2007-04-10
This book is the most intriguing book I have read in outlining a truly strategic system for running a business. You can call it wisdom or experience, but I assure you most business people will enjoy the read and relate to many of the topics. Illustrations are concise and creative and are designed to help visualize the concepts.
A definite winner and must read!
Great analysis and approach on an age old issue.......2007-03-08
This book takes a very practical approach at describing the impact of market conditions on corporate strategies and provides a framework for how to deal with what you can't control - your market conditions.
The examples are crisp and clear and the methodology is practical and proven out over years of consulting practice.
Decent and Useful.......2007-01-03
A decent book, I found the information to be useful and beneficial especially since I work at a firm that has little, if any "peripheral vision".
A fast and easy read that can actually significantly help both growing and mature organizations.
A practical guide / "implement-able".......2006-11-30
The authors have picked one of the key aspects of a company's strategy toolkit. Strategic or market planning should give a company the ability to respond to changes in the market (e.g. customers, competition and technology). But my actual experience in strategy consulting and then marketing strategy for a large corporation has been somewhat different. Several times companies' response to analyzing market changes starts by looking out but quickly turns more and more internal. The result is usually "more of the same" strategy with some incremental refinements - of course all this is backed by impressive financial and other quantitative analysis. 2 things become a casualty in such a process - the willingness to strain outside of comfort zones and "see" what is happening. And the ability to tap your own employees (and customers and other stakeholders) who are the closest to the change and may have a good feel for what's coming! In my view marketing/product/strategy functions should develop a joint mechanism to see, evaluate and act upon the key developments in their expanse of the market.
That is exactly what this book provides. The book is easy to read and structured well, essentially taking the reader through a clear 7 step process on how to anticipate and respond to changes. The Appendix at the end that details the "Strategic Eye Exam" serves as a useful starting questionnaire.
The book will be a very good read for those who believe that the world around them changes quickly and want to develop a BU or company wide process to learn, evaluate and act on those changes, including the ability to discard the red herrings.
Highly recommended!
The Importance of Vigilance.......2006-11-13
Day and Schoemaker have written a fascinating book on how to increase one's vigilance, all wrapped up in a larger tale of Darwinian ophthalmology. It's a book of the times. Read repeatedly, learn, and inwardly digest. You will be amply rewarded.

The first step is picking up the book.......2004-05-11
Exhausted? Frazzled? Can't stand to add even one more thing to your to-do list? You'll want to add following the advice of Mary Lewis...trust me. In "Break FREE from Burnout in 30 Days!" she takes your hand and leads you through a month of life changing, stress relieving tasks that are simple and positive. You will walk away from this book with a better outlook on life.
In the beginning, there were the top ten signs of burnout. If you recognize these things in your life, Mary can help you. Then, taking it one step at a time, one day at a time for a month, you will let go of those top ten signs and be free once more. Steps like not listening to your inner critic, saying no more often, scratching out your to-do list (except for finishing the book!), changing your attitude, changing your peers if need be, stop gossiping and start receiving what you deserve. It's all simple really, and it's all good.
Mary shares her own burnout stories and lets you know that she understands. It happens. But she also challenges you to stop it from happening. You can stop the cycle and you can take your life back. The first step is picking up the book, the second is reading it, one day at a time.

Finally! A way to let go and focus on what's important.......2002-08-13
Mary clearly writes from her experiences which is why this book is superb. An added bonus for me personally is that she comes from the high tech industry. For every roadblock and mindblock I have experienced each chapter of the book has an answer. Mary knows that when you're burned out you can't take having another 'to do' list so she has created a book that tackles one obstacle per chapter. Her personal experiences have provided her with the unique ability to know the order to approach each of the obstacles that need to be worked through. The chapters are short and action oriented. The book gets you moving quickly and easily onto a path of clearing the clutter and achieving what you really want. The beauty of this book is that the exercises apply to both your work and personal life. As a result I can't remember ever having felt as confident, happier and stronger than I do today. Results are quick!
Burnout is not the cost of success.......2002-08-08
My job was killing me, or so I thought. Like most professionals, I believed that the higher I went up in my career ladder, the more stress I needed to shoulder, and the less time I had to actually live life. I thought that giving 150% was the price for being successful, and that ulcers were a normal part of the rat race.
I was wrong - "the job" doesn't burn you out, your own mindset does! I learned how to stop being a slave to my email, voicemail, celphone and pager, and not only get all my work done, but of a higher caliber than before. This book walks you, step by step, through the process of taking control back and a being truly successful person - happy, healthy, and productive!
A must read for anyone who even suspects they may be burning out, in easy to handle chunks. I highly recommend it.
I Broke Free.......2002-08-06
I have read this book and followed many of Ms. Lewis' suggestions. As a healthcare professional, I have suffered burnout, numerous times. I was told it came with the job.I love my work but didn't love the stress levels. Ms. Lewis' suggestions are very helpful! I don't overload my schedule nor do I volunter to be everything to everybody anymore. I chose those areas that are near and dear to my heart and stay with them. I am very happy. My stress level is VERY manageable. This book was very helpful and well written so even, I could understand.
Break Free From Burnout!.......2002-08-06
Mary Lewis has a clear and well thought out style. Instead of trying to change everything at once, she reccommneds a new item a day. Each new way of looking at your worklife builds on what you practiced the day before. Each item is readable in a quick burst instead of long chapters that overwhelm.
The examples are clear and a reflect the things most overacheivers (myself included) believe. Changing those commonly held beliefs allow you to be more productive and more healthy!
HIghly reccommned!
Book Description
On the day she died, Constance Young was the undisputed star of morning television. But her plans to move herself and her loyal audience to another network were cancelled when she ended up at the bottom of her swimming pool. And the fabled unicorn amulet that Constance had been wearing during her final hours—a gift from King Arthur to his beloved Guinevere and the centerpiece of the upcoming Camelot exhibit at New York's Cloisters museum—is missing.
A morning show veteran and now anchor of the KEY Evening Headlines, Eliza Blake is shocked by the death of her former colleague, and is determined to discover who wanted Constance out of the way . . . and why. To do so, she enlists the aid of three KEY News coworkers: "Jane-of-all-trades" Annabelle Murphy, who can switch from producing to sleuthing at a moment's notice; charming and fearless cameraman extraordinaire B.J. D'Elia to add brains, brawn, and a much-needed male perspective to the team; and Dr. Margo Gonzalez, on-air psychiatrist, who understands the complex puzzles of the human mind. Calling themselves "The Sunrise Suspense Society," they set out to get to the bottom of the heinous murder, in a case that will test their ingenuity and their courage to the very limits.
The deeper they dig, the more twisted the trail to Constance's killer becomes—as the list of suspects grows longer by the minute. Was it her spurned and enraged medievalist lover, or a muckraking author who blamed her for ruining her life? Perhaps money was the motive, and Constance's sister, jealous of her wealth and fame, was responsible. Or possibly someone at Key News was angry enough—or frightened enough—to commit cold-blooded murder. The one sure thing is that Constance Young made a lot of enemies—and now one of them is Eliza's enemy as well. And the closer she and the Society get to unmasking the murderer, the closer they each get to dying, suddenly . . . and brutally.

Highly entertaining page-turner!.......2007-09-14
Mary Jane Clark is my latest "find" who in a very short time has become one of my favourite authors.
"When Day Breaks" is a suspense novel from the television business. The plot is brilliant. Beautiful news anchor Constance Young leaves Key News for a competitor. On the night of her debut at the morning news show, she is found dead at the bottom of her swimming pool. Not far from the pool also a huge dog is found dead at approximately the same time. Constance is a keen swimmer, so what happened?
This is a fast paced easy read, with short chapters, not dwelling on unnecessary details. The characters are complex and interesting. (And no, it's not easy to guess who did it!) That the author works in television, is apparent from her detailed knowledge of this world. Add to this her obvious knack for writing page-turners, and her success as a bestselling author is no surprise.
After "When Day Breaks" I bought the rest of her books and have enjoyed them all just as much. They all take place within the same (fictional) television network but are individual novels to be read separately.
Highly entertaianing reading. I loved it!
A terrific suspense story of life and politics in the TV news world........2007-08-30
This is an exciting suspense thriller in Mary Jane Clark's series of books set in the "KEY TV" network world. There is "KEY to America," a morning show, and "KEY Evening Headlines," a nightly news show just for starters and the competition is fierce. The events happen over a week's time span in May.
The story opens in a Manhattan animal shelter where an unknown person is intent on getting a dog, a large dog that is roughly 112 pounds. The attendant there convinces the stranger to take a Great Dane named Marco who was well-trained by his previous owner who had to move and couldn't take him with him. The new owner takes the dog far out in the country to Constance Young's get-away country home and convinces the dog to play fetch with a rubber ball and, as the dog gets muddy, throws a ball in the pool so the dog follows it. As Marco is swimming in the pool he sees something big and shiny thrown in the pool by his new owner. It is a toaster connected by an orange outdoor cord and the dog dies. This is a very scary prologue to the mystery and murder that is about to start and gives us insight into the murderer's character. This killer not only hates enough to kill a lovely dog that never hurt anyone but is also ready to take a human being's life, as well.
Constance Young took over the show "KEY to America" after Eliza Blake went to anchor "KEY Evening Headlines." Constance became the "undisputed star of morning television" and was now quitting "KEY to America" and moving to the competition. At KEY News, co-workers and bosses alike have mixed feelings about Constance's new job as it either makes their job easier or much harder. Her replacement at "KEY to America" is going to be a young woman who is friend/lover to the producer. Constance enjoys her farewell show and luncheon and heads to her country house to relax before taking her new job. The next morning, Constance is found by her housekeeper; drowned in her pool. While it looks like an accident at first, the coroner and other evidence found by police soon lead to the conclusion that she was murdered.
As Eliza Blake and her friends at KEY begin to investigate the murder on their own, the suspect list gets longer and longer and the danger to Eliza and her friends come closer and closer to home.
Full of great plot twists and turns, this is a suspenseful and enjoyable read. Highly recommended!
Shame on you!.......2007-07-28
When I close a book after two pages..that tells me something. Shame on you for your animal abuse and giving an idea to all the crazy nuts in the world. I am so glad I got this book from the library and can return it right away. No money wasted on this trash. I repeat..shame on you.
Very Enjoyable.......2007-07-25
"When Day Breaks" is a quick suspense story -- a great summer read. Mary Jane Clark paints her characters so vividly; when the book ended I was hungry for more and wanted to know what happened to all of them. I brought it with me to the beach and it definitely held my attention and my interest.
book rating.......2007-07-20
I love the writing of Mary Jane Clark and Mary Higgins Clark. I have read all of their books and even have the entire set of both authors. I would strongly encourage everyone to check out the writing of these authors.
Book Description
Colette began writing Break of Day in her early fifties, at Saint-Tropez on the Côte d'Azur, where she had bought a small house after the breakup of her second marriage. The novel's theme -- the renunciation of love and the return to an independent existence supported and enriched by the beauty and peace of nature -- grows out of Colette's own period of self-assessment in the middle of her life. A collection of subtle reflections about love and life, it is among her most thoughtful and stylistically bold works.

A castle-like engagement of the senses.......2001-02-08
I really wish that this book was availible here. I found it in a used book store last year. I read about it in a women's rights manual during high school. Reading the article I searched frantically for Break of Day, as I hope others have done or will. Break of Day works delicately on all your senses. Awakens your nose to the smells of Colette's own gardening. She has you listen to her interesting and sometimes not so captivating friends. Your eyes and hands caress a world of animals, friends, ex-husbands, and nature. Break of Day has you kneeling in the dirt and breathing the air of the coast. This book is about being alive and knowing beauty.

Book Description
Now, for the vast majority of golfers who struggle to shoot below 100 for 18 holes, a practical instruction book...
In Break 100 Now!, renowned "Swing Doctor" Mike Adams provides a sensible, non-technical approach that high handicappers can put to immediate use to lower their golf scores.
Unlike traditional golf instructionals, Break 100 Now! focuses more on the practical and less on mechanics. It stresses simple but proven strategies, such as replacing long irons with easier-to-hit fairway utility woods (4-5-6-7) and forsaking the driver for the more reliable 3-wood -- an exchange of only eight yards for accuracy.
Written in clear, straightforward language, this book offers both the beginner and the novice a ninety-day program that enables them to go from hacker to golfer in the shortest time possible. Even experienced golfers can benefit from these invaluable tips and advice.

Practical Advice That Will Lower Your Scores.......2007-02-23
Break 100 Now, is a straightforward, practical book about how to shoot lower scores in the shortest amount of time possible.
The book starts by encouraging the reader to take an honest look at the equipment in his bag, and get rid of clubs that don't work. This will start with the 3 iron, and will probably include the 4 iron as well. Instead of these longer, lower-lofted clubs, the author suggests using hybrids or fairway woods. The focus here is giving yourself the best tools that meet your CURRENT skill level, not the skill you wish you had. Much like David Pelz's book, the author also suggests carrying several wedges, as the majority of your shots are going to be within 100 yards.
The book also features some basic instruction on the short game, as well as the full swing. While the language here is clear, I would have liked more illustrations, as I think some concepts are more easily grasped by pictures than by long paragraphs of text.
The best that the book has to offer, in my opinion, is the chapter entitled: "Course Management For Dummies", which introduces the reader to the kind of thinking that seperates successful golfers from poor ones. The reader is encouraged to think of each swing as a precious piece of currency that has value. And while there may come a time when the reader has the skill to hit the long draw over some trees with his driver, it will probably be a much better "investment" to hit a conservative iron or fairway wood off the tee, and ensure that your next shot is from the fairway. You've got to walk before you can run, and
What's great about this is that once you learn how to manage your game and play the shots that are best for you (and not necessarily the shots the rest of the guys in your foursome are playing) you will start to have a lot more confidence in your game, and will shoot lower scores as a result.
In summary, this book does pretty much what the title suggest. While readers will not actually break 100 "now", the book outlines a plan that should have the reader shooting in the double digits within 90 days.
Good but definitely not magic..........2006-11-06
This book is a solid purchase and I would recommend it for any real hacker (as I was before I bought this boook). The tips they give are excellent for lowering your score. That said, you won't really FEEL or even LOOK like a better golfer after reading this book. You'll just be scoring lower.
I have probably played 10 rounds since I've read the book and I've gone from not even keeping track of my score to consistently shooting right around 100. The tips in this book have kept me from hitting so many unplayable tee shots and from shanking so many of my shots within 100 yards. as a result, I have shaved a significant number of strokes from my score. I still look like a hacker to my friends, the only differnce is my score is much closer to a respectable score.
Don't expect this book to teach how to hit better looking shots or how to get rid of your slice. This book is only good for exactly what the title says it is good for... getting you under 100 quickly. That's it.
A sensible approach to the game for the Hacker.......2006-09-29
Are you tired of the triple digit score or the "Snowman" on the score card? Stop whining and do something about it. This is achievable and I have done it in less than half the time as outlined in this book.
Having just started playing this game, I have realized that the most important things to concentrate upon are fundamentals of play and achieving more consistency. Note that I didn't say perfection. The target audience is for men and women alike.
This is no-nonsense approach to improving your score by practical tips on the short game (e.g. putting, chipping, pitching). Strategies are outlined when should do one over the other. This is a simpler and more realistic approach to the short game than the "Bible" that has been extensively outlined in another text. For the beginner, this information is more than adequate until you have achieved the goal of breaking the elusive score of 100. The author has outlined the book by a thinking person's approach rather than focusing upon "ego". You will realize that those "three letters" will keep your score in the "Three digits".
An important adage that he uses is fundamental:
"Putt the ball whenever you can...When you can't putt, chip. When you can't chip, pitch." - Tomasi
Starting from the fundamentals of choosing and using equipment and which clubs to use, to making the grip to course management, the author does a fine job with clear and concise descriptions. Although this has a paucity of images, the images that are provided illustrate the most important points. Full shots as well as how to improve power in your swing is outlined.
This book will not take the place of an instructor but I find it useful for someone interested in starting out planning from scratch. It's audience is predominantly for people who have played and hopefully, had a lesson or two to get an idea of a more conventional swing.
The last chapter covers a 13 week plan for those trying to follow his methods.
---
I do suggest a new edition be written to cover the newer equipment that has been introduced since this book has been written.
___
I highly recommend this book. Every duffer should have it on their shelves and maybe in "The Bag". It has helped me "Break 100" and lead to more enjoyable, rather than frustrating times on the course. It may make the word "FORE!" in your vocabulary a thing of the past.
Great book, but the authors have a better one.......2006-08-12
The same authors also wrote a book titled, "How to Break 90". It covers a similar set of topics, but includes less "beginner" info and more advanced techniques for the short game.
I bought "How to Break 90" when I was still trying to break 100, and the techniques got me into the 90's in just a few rounds. That book also includes the idea of "personal par", and the importance of giving yourself extra strokes to get on the green. For example, if you shoot "Level 5's" (average 5 across an entire round), then you'll shoot 90. Using the same idea, if you average 6's, then you'll shoot 108. I found that when I focused on 5's and 6's instead of on par, my scores started dropping.
Anyway, I would recommend "How to Break 90" instead of this book. That way, once you are firmly in the 90's you can re-read it and hopefully break 90!
Changed the way I look at my game.......2005-09-20
This book fundamentally changed the way I look at my game. Not *the* game, but *my* game. It helped me to be honest with yourself and stop comparing my game to experts. I had been bouncing along around 105 for a long time. I shot 98 the first two rounds after reading this book. The two most helpful things were focusing on chipping / short game, and dialing in my distance for different clubs. I also started using the course management ideas, including playing a 'fantasy round' at the range, and keeping a diary of every shot.
Highly, highly recommend this book.

A huge disappointment.......2007-08-16
I bought this book for my science-oriented 4yr old grandson who is fascinated by "black holes" in space. This book is a huge disappointment as the illustrations are unattrative, the story is silly and it teaches nothing. The back cover states it is a "space spoof." I wish I had known that before I bought it. Nowhere in any reviews was that made clear. Additionally, my copy had 8 pages missing text. It certainly is not for a 4 year old, nor was there anything in it for his grandmother.
Brave and bright, bright and brave, Commander Toad.......2004-11-01
I totally loved these books when I was a kid! I really wish I still had this one. :D It has that eerie quality that most kids just love.. not scary at all, just strange, it will stick with a kid. It's that indefinable magic that shows up so much stronger when you're young, and maybe reading books like this will keep it alive later on. :D The characters are great too, this is how all kid's books should be!
The BEST intergalactic toad book I have ever read........1997-04-03
This book really fills a big black hole in modern literature. The subject of toads in space has been constantly avoided, mishandled, and disregarded since the publication of Ivan Rabinavski's "Why Toads could never make it on the moon." Jane Yolen places the space-toad in its proper perspective in a beautiful and meaningful manner, pulling no punches and using no foul language. I loved it
Customer Reviews:
Nicky Loved It.......2001-02-05
It's the best Commander Toad book! I like them all. They all are great. The monster in this one was cool.
Funny, funny science fiction for kids and their parents.......1998-06-19
Commander Toad is a delight. He's "bold and bright", though not quite as bright as he thinks. His crew (an amalgam of loose takes on Star Wars and Star Trek characters) puts up with his prideful ways, because he is, after all, a good leader. Together with his mixed-gender crew he gets into and out of a wonderful series of scrapes. This book is the first in the series.
Jane Yolen writes for kids. For example, when Commander and crew are threatened by a sea monster who makes it clear that they're about to be lunch, I asked my 4-year old what he thought would happen.
"Shoot him with a ray gun," he answered.
"I don't know," I said. "I think that they'll find out that the monster's just lonely, and they'll make friends."
Turn the page, and BAM! Lt. Lily, Toad's female weapons master, is blasting away (to no effect). Thanks, Jane. Only you could make a story about a bunch of space-explorer frogs be true-to-life.
Jane Yolen also writes for the adults who read books to their kids. There's nearly a pun a page, and the Commander's ludicrous solutions to problems have a germ of genius unrestrained by the laws of physics that will have you shaking your head over his cleverness.
Buy this book, or regret the lost opportunity.
Book Description
Taking up the story where "The Beatles: A Diary" left off, this is a highly detailed chronicle of what each of the ex-Beatles did from January 1970 onwards. A fascinating, fully illustrated account of four individuals emerging from the straitjacket of pop music's greatest ever success story. (hardcover, b/w photos)
Customer Reviews:
Great Addition to the Beatles' Story.......2001-06-06
First let me say what a wonderful book this is. I bought it thinking of it as a reference, but ending up reading it cover to cover. There are many stories that run through the book, John, Paul, George, and Ringo's lives, for sure, but you can also follow the legal cases (I never knew Apple records sued Apple Computers, and got an undisclosed settlement!), the tours, the press bickering and the love fests in the press.
I found the organization exceptional. While an index would have been nice (maybe for future editions), I didn't really need it. My favorite activity while reading this book was to follow various threads from entry to entry. So, when John wrote a letter to Melody Maker, that is noted and you are directed to the subsequent dates to find out the response, etc. I found this to be fun and engaging. All in all, a wonderful book.
What a great book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-04-11
I thought this book was a great read!. Its researched with great detail & passion from a writer who knows his stuff. I'd love to meet the writer, as I imagine that he could talk for hours about the Beatles & you wouldn't get bored!.
Best Beatles Book in 10 years!.......2000-04-15
This is the best book since Lewisohn's Day By Day book of the Beatles which cover 1962-1989. It picks up where he left off and gives us the most complete picture of the Beatles after the Beatles to date. Only a few mistkaes on dates and times, which hopefully will be corrected in the next edition. Buy it ASAP!
NECESSARY COMPANION.......1999-12-16
From John and Paul's last photo together to John's statement of a possible Beatle reunion; this book has it all on the four muscicians who continue to influence the musical world. Keith Badman details all the relevant events of the post-Beatles' lives which is a must for any true Beatle fan!
Every Little Thing.......1999-12-13
If you need to know every activity each Beatle has participated in from the minute Paul announced he was leaving the group, until the present time, this is the book for you. It's a diary, plain and simple, which lists day by day appearances, meetings, concerts, interviews, record releases, etc., many of which were obscure until now. If you're looking for narrative prose about the solo Beatles, look elsewhere. This book definitely has the most detailed account of John's final day, and the other Beatles' reactions. It has a few rare photos; a must have for true Beatlemaniacs.

Learned more than I ever could have imagined. His "Your Video Business" from RaysCorner still remains my top favorite. However, this book ruled.
One of the best books I ever purchased.......2006-08-07
You will not be bored. I learned more from this book on the porn business than anything I can find elsewhere. Ray West has a new fan here.
Thrilling!.......2006-08-01
The book is all meat and no fat. I use it, and put to the test, and I have gotten some great results. Loved it.
Was very impressed - cuts right to the heart!.......2006-03-14
Great book! What can I say? I love women and I want more of them as an actor just starting out. This book gave me a giant head-start boost to be an actor in the porn industry, and "do" women while getting paid!
Ray, your books may be short, but they deliver in more ways than I even thought! It worked. Callbacks are coming in from a Director (as i speak) for my 2nd adult acting job with Lisa Lipps!
