I consumed this book as fast as I did the first one. I loved it.

4 out of 5 stars A compelling novel .......2005-04-20

Since You Went Away by Dean Hughes is an amazing story that observes the outlook of many different people all striving to survive World War Two. Never once was I bored while reading this book, however due to the many story lines at times it was sometimes hard to keep up. But in the end all characters had a gripping story to tell- well worth the time!

5 out of 5 stars He draws us on . . ........2005-02-14

Hughes is brilliant at drawing the reader into the lives, loves and dangers the Thomas family faces as each of the children go off to war. Alex, in the European theater, facing those he taught and loved on his mission as the enemy. Wally, serving in the South Pacific, is gathered up in the fateful surrender of American soldiers and forced to endure the infamous Bataan March. Bobbi struggles with her own challenges in Hawaii. As each page turns and the tension builds, I can scarcely wait for the next. This is a must buy and a valuable edition to your home library.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting book, with a few faults.......2007-06-21

This book is valuable because it encourages teachers to create more student-centered activities, and include some information from outside the textbook. The author could have been more detailed in some of his instructions.

The star rating comes way down because of inaccuracies. When it's clear that some of the text is inaccurate, the ENTIRE text becomes suspect and untrustworthy, and will need to be checked out before teaching. In specific:

The book says, "[Iranian Prime Minister] Mussadegh ... escaped imprisonment by the shah by moving to Paris." In reality, Mosaddeq was imprisoned for three years, and then spent the rest of his life under house arrest in his village.

The book paraphrases Einstein as believing, "nothing could go faster than the speed of light ... because anything as it approaches the speed of light becomes smaller in size until it is pure energy when it reaches the speed of light." Instead, what Einstein said is that when an object approaches the speed of light it gains mass, and would reach infinite mass at the speed of light, requiring an infinite force to move the object. That is what makes exceeding the speed of light impossible, not the fact that the object "becomes pure energy."

5 out of 5 stars Middle School & High School Use.......2001-07-21

This summer school session I taught 7-8-9 combination classes. Ruth Heller's book on adverbs was helpful. The bright pictures were just as eye-catching for a 13-year old as for a 7-year old. The language use prompted many questions from my students -- second language learners and native English speakers. We even "marched" around the campus reciting the opening ditty "Adverbs work terrifically when answering specifically how, how often, when, and where." Though the freshmen were a bit embarrassed about the march, they learned about adverbs and thought the song and march were great punishment for the class clowns.

5 out of 5 stars Score one for concept-attainment lessons!.......2000-04-25

I constantly struggle to clearly present the abstract concept of the parts of speech. Heller's Language Series is a wonderful help in this task. The illustrations are beautiful, the rhyming instructional/example-filled poetry is fun to read, and the book could be used with a wide variety of ages! Thank you Ruth Heller!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for teachers.......2000-03-30

Ruth Heller has a fantastic way of explaining parts of speech to children that is fun and different. I am a teacher in a middle school and I am using all of her World of Language books to open up the lesson on each part of speech. They are a bit elementary for middle school students, but sometimes that is what it takes. The pictures are also a delight and the students enjoy browsing through the book when I am finished. What a fun way to open up kids to parts of speech and the English language.

Book Description

Ajahn Chah (1919-1992) was admired for the way he demystified the Buddhist teachings, presenting them in a remarkably simple and down-to-earth style for people of any background. He was a major influence and spiritual mentor for a generation of American Buddhist teachers, including Jon Kabat-Zinn, Sharon Salzberg, and Jack Kornfield. Previous books by Ajahn Chah have consisted of collections of short teachings on a wide variety of subjects. This new book focuses on the theme of impermanence, offering powerful remedies for overcoming our deep-seated fear of change, including guidance on letting go of attachments, living in the present, and taking up the practice of meditation. Everything Arises, Everything Falls Away also contains stories and anecdotes about this beloved master's life and his interactions with students, from his youth as a struggling monk to his last years when American students were coming to study with him in significant numbers. These stories help to convey Ajahn Chah's unique spirit and teaching style, allowing readers to know him both through his words and the way in which he lived his life.

4 out of 5 stars Buddhism illustrated for Thailand's rural poor.......2007-05-07

Ajahn Chah was not a writer. He was born in a fishing village in northeast Thailand in 1918 and spent many years there speaking to the farmers and the fishermen. Many of these talks were recorded, transcribed and later translated and compiled by one of his western students, Paul Breiter.

Ajahn Chah spoke simply for a simple audience. To illustrate his points, he spoke of fields, ponds, rivers, fish, frogs, dogs, plowing, planting, and harvesting. He used folk tales and parables. Here he speaks of how we are responsible for our own suffering:

"Really, someone who suffers when living alone is foolish. Someone who suffers when living with others is foolish. It's like chicken turds: if you carry them around by yourself, they stink. If you keep them when you're among others, they stink. You carry the rotten things with you."

On the futility of becoming overly preoccupied in affairs of the world, he reminds his audience of the beetle, scratching in the earth:

"It can scratch up a pile that's a lot bigger than itself, but it's still only a pile of dirt. If it works hard, it makes a deep hole in the ground, but it's only a hole in dirt. If a buffalo drops a load of dung there, it will be bigger than the beetle's pile of earth, but it still isn't anything that reaches to the sky. It's all dirt. Worldly accomplishments are like this. No matter how hard the beetles work, they're just involved in dirt, making holes and piles"

Translating the colloquialisms must have been challenging, but, as you can see from the above, Paul Breiter has done a magnificent job capturing Ajahn Chah's voice, making "Everything Arises, Everything Falls Away" a wonderful volume for even those who may have been practicing the dharma for many years.

For those new to Buddhism, this would be an amusing and enlightening introduction, not only because of the colorful language but also for the way in which Ajahn Chah reduces the message of Buddhism to a few easy-to-grasp concepts. He seemed to like reminding his audience that Buddhism was not all that difficult to understand, and he did this through the message of impermanence. As he remarks in a teaching on meditation:

"The way I practice medication is not very complicated - just this. This is what it all comes down to: `It's uncertain'. Everything meets at this point."

Although this book doesn't present a sustained, unified argument on impermanence, it makes up for a lack of cohesion by presenting small helpings of Buddhist folk wisdom that can be enjoyed again and again. For those interested in sampling more of Ajahn Chah's teachings, several are available at no charge at forestsangha_DOT_org.

5 out of 5 stars No Frills Arahant.......2007-03-14

Reading Ajahn Chah is one of the best ways to experience Dhamma talks at home. He is simple, direct, and profound. No written speeches. No convoluted exercises in Buddhist rhetoric. Just the facts, ma'am.

5 out of 5 stars clear truth.......2006-12-05

truth is something clear & simple- accessible to anyone open to see. it's so vividly pointed out here. helps escape our deluded mind :) you must read ajahn chah if you are interested in buddhist teachings.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful little book!.......2006-09-14

When I first learned of Ajahn Chah's teachings, my understanding of Dharma was limited, as well as my practice. The clarity that arises from reading, and practicing the teachings contained in "Everything Arises, Everything Falls Away" makes it a great choice for anyone following the Buddha's path.

This book is missing only one thing (as found in other Dharma Books by Shambhala): "WARNING: This book might be dangerous to your ego."
With Metta,
The Path

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Teachings and Wonderful Stories..........2006-04-13

Sometimes Buddhist teachings can seem inaccessable to Westerners, but this book is an exception. It contains tremendous insights into uncertainty and impermanence and solid teachings on dealing with the unsatisfactory aspects of life. It is not, however, just a book of dry teachings. There are lively stories and snapshots of monastery life that add an extra dimension to the book. I also enjoyed the softly humorous aspects of many of Ajahn Chah's teachings. This book is well-written and hard to put down. While perhaps not appropriate as an introductory text, I give it my unreserved recommendation for people with any background knowledge of Buddhism.

What distinguishes Rohn Engh's book on how to sell photographs--now in its fourth edition--from the many volumes on the subject? Could it be his honest, no-nonsense approach to the topic, as opposed to the get-rich-quick slant of many competitors? His practical, step-by-step advice? His pragmatic sales techniques and principles, which teach niche marketing and explain the vast difference between good pictures of popular subjects (sunsets, wildflowers) and the type of photographs in demand by the editors who actually buy them? All of the above and more, including solid advice about selling photos in the electronic age.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book.......2004-07-02

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in becoming a professional stock photographer. Rohn Engh's words are encouraging, and fill the reader with confidence.

Some of the information is a little outdated, because the internet has changed some of the industry's standard practices. However, the majority of this book is full of practial information that can still be applied today and for years to come. I've read the book 3 times and I still refer to it frequently.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, but already dated........2002-05-21

The first chapters of the book are somewhat helpful to those just starting out in photography -- specifically, a great deal of time is spent on differentiating between mere snapshots and marketable editorial material. However, this material isn't particularly helpful if you can already shoot and get marketable results. There are also helpful chapters on marketing your identity, and on the business side of things, including legal issues surrounding editorial shooting, which are the chapters I found to be most helpful.

I do have one major gripe about the book, however, that wiped away two of five stars for me:

With a sizable percentage 35mm pros either shooting digital already or in the process of making the move, this book shows its age by discounting digital as generally inadequate or unsellable. This may have been true in the mid-'90s when a serious professional-quality digital system was still $20,000 or more, but it is no longer true today and thus this book seems like another victim of the digital age, in which 5 years old is very old indeed.

Perhaps it is time for a new edition that discusses the digital workflow and digital sales a little more, instead of merely discouraging the use of digital -- especially now that many publishers and editors are looking for digital specifically.

Really, if you are a serious amatuer who has finally decided to sell your shots to wider markets, I think the Photographer's Market is a much more essential title to have on the shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Good for the beginning freelance photographer.......2002-03-15

This book has already paid for itself in submissions of "cliched'" photos that I would have made had I not read the book. This book contains sample form letters for cover letters and queries, and describes the best markets to go to. It also contains a program for finding what subjects one is best suited to photographing.

5 out of 5 stars Business and Pleasure.......2001-05-22

...I think the lesson that is easily overlooked by critics of Mr. Engh's book is that those that follow it's practice GET TO TAKE PICTURES FOR A LIVING!

If you love to take pictures, for God's sake, buy this book and do what you love!! Quit working in Target for the rest of your life in the hopes that someday when you retire you'll get to spend more time on photography. No, you won't be able to quit that Target job tomorrow. Mr. Engy doesn't promise that pipe dream. What he DOES do is point out things which I've found to be dead-on correct through experience....

    1. Slow but steady wins the race. 2. The dilligent hand maketh wealth. 3. You don't get anything you don't work for. 4. Just because you like it, doens't mean anybody else will.

Another note to the purist that would say that the practitioner of this book's premises is a "Sell Out". If it's art that you want to make -- so much so that you would work a different job as the main monitery support for said art -- why can't you make your 'Art' photography when you finish your work for the day as a 'Stock' photographer?

The question is: Do you want to look back at the end of your life and say "I created a picture that rivaled Adams" or do you want to look back over a life in which you can say "I really had a great time with my family and friends. See, here's my wife in 'Ladies Home Journal'. Here's my brother at my gallary opening in New York in 'The New Yorker' (pictures by me). Here's that thing we did down in Cozumel and I didn't have to pay a dime. What a great time!"

If you'd like the latter. Quit messing around:

    1. Buy the book. 2. Read the book. 3. Read it again. 4. Keep it on a shelf as a reference while you DO what it says. 5. Buy all the books in the bibliography that you can afford and are applicable.

3 out of 5 stars Some Good Advice, but a Flawed Premise.......2000-11-08

Before I bought this book, I had perused dozens of reviews, most of which were favorable. I was left with the impression that - like the Photographer's Market - you can't go wrong with this book. For some photographers, I'm sure it *is* quite helpful; Engh's advice is pragmatic and straight forward. And if pragmatic photos are your goal, this book gets 5 stars and not 3. But many photographers are not shooting for pragmatism's sake; they're shooting because there's something emotional or personal which they wish to convey on a visual level. Pictures, rather than poetry or song lyrics if you'd like to look at it that way. Engh seems to disregard this idea all together, once he starts explaining his magic forumla for success....

Once you get to the crux of this formula - that you should be shooting some type of environmental portraiture (people in the context of a specific place) - it implies that if you are interested in photographing something else, you're basically wasting your time. This is frankly a little disturbing. His theory suggests that it is the market's need for a particular kind of photo that should motivate you, and not your own intuition. That is frankly dead wrong in the eyes of many successful photographers. It only works well if you see your photos as a retail product first, and a personal expression (dare I say "art?") second...and some do see it that way, which is fine.

Perhaps that is where Engh goes wrong: this book could be more aptly titled "How the Casual Photographer can Sell and Resell Their Snapshots." It is plainly not that useful for the person interested in fine art photography, "fine art" meaning anything which is not born of commercial origins. It's as though Engh thinks the act of photographing is what's most important to photographers - that if you're out there snapping away that's all that matters, so long as the pictures sell. For many photographers this is not what the medium is about. It's not a "make big money in a hurry" kind of business. It requires someone who is unwavering, methodical and patient...not someone with a few rolls of 35mm film, a camera and Engh's magic formula.

The best instructor I ever had made one crucial point to his students: to be a successful photographer, your images have to speak to people on a deeper level than the average snapshot. If you wish to make photos of this quality, the *only* way to do so is to shoot that subject matter which is not only familiar to you, but very close to your heart. If you shoot what is only moderately interesting to you, so too will your photos be moderately interesting...and perhaps not interesting at all. This is to mention nothing of the technical mastery you must posess, as well. Formulas do not a lasting photograph make....

The bottom line is, if landscapes or buildings or some other thing which is often photographed...if that is what moves you, *that* is what you should be exploring with the camera and lens. To do otherwise is to do yourself a disservice (unless you just want to sell a few snapshots, which is fine). Granted, it may take a few years before you can really break into the market with some truly unique and marketable imagery but that's to be expected. Great photographs don't come easy; it takes perserverance and dedication. So, if you can't make money off your work right away (as Engh suggests you should), then you find other means of income as you continue to work on your personal style and technical mastery of the medium. Ansel Adams wasn't taking his masterpieces after 6 months work. Galen Rowell (probably the most talented landscape photographer to come along since Adams) failed to sell his work many times before he finally succeeded.

Photography is like any other endeavor in life: if you really want to make your mark, you have to pay your dues. There's no way around it.

So the question really is (dear reader and fellow photographer): are you in it to make quick money, or are you in it to make your mark? If you want the quick money, Engh is your man and this book is your book (without question). If, on the other hand you want to achieve a more lofty goal with your work, this book won't help you much other than perhaps to give the proverbial wake-up call. The call which reminds you that no, it won't be easy...but which ignores the possibility that the struggle might bring much greater success than the forumulas in this book.

5 out of 5 stars time to read it again.......2007-02-12

I read this book a long time ago and I'm long overdue to read it again. I've spent some time at sea on merchant vessels and research ships. His descriptions of life on board make you feel like you are right there with all the sounds and smells of a working ship. It's one of my favorite alltime books. It's a great movie too. Not just for lovers of sea stories.

5 out of 5 stars True Life Disguised as Fiction.......2003-08-29

Kenneth Dodson poured a lifetime of seagoing experience into Away All Boats. I had the opportunity to get to know this remarkable man before his passing just a few years ago and heard some of the true-to-life experiences aboard U.S.S. Pierce that formed the basis of this book. Away All Boats is a story that will leave you feeling as tired as McDougal and the other men of the fictional U.S.S. Belinda. It's a strong story of teamwork, loyalty and people faced with challenges beyond human endurance. It's also a true picture of what life was like aboard a Navy attack transport. In fact, this book has long been required reading at the Naval Academy for it's accurate picture of amphibious warfare. Like McDougal, the protagonist in Away All Boats, Dodson skippered merchant ships in the 1930s. He got to know Charles Lindbergh while carrying him, Anne Morrow Lindbergh and their aircraft back from an Asian airline route scouting trip. Dodson spent the end of 1941 dodging Japanese forces in the Pacific before voluntarily leaving command of a merchant ship for a lieutenant's berth in the U.S. Navy. If you want a three dimensional look at a seldom covered aspect of WWII Navy operations, Away All Boats is a top pick.

    5 out of 5 stars A Surprise.......1999-12-16

Excellent military fiction! I picked up this book (1954 edition) at a public library free offering three years ago and just now starting reading it. Surprisingly well done, and reminiscent a bit of the Seafort saga and The Big 'E'

5 out of 5 stars Excellent novel dealing with Naval amphbious warfare.......1999-05-29

Dodson's 'Away All Boats' is a novel that is both a study of human nature and the art of command. The central theme is the ship and it's missions. The charecters of the crew bring this mass of steel to life and give it personality. There are strong charecters amongst the officers as well as the Sailors. Likewise there are officers and Sailors that one would cross the street to avoid. they are all thrust into the confines of theat attack transport Belinda and give the story so much of it's richness. The captain is a driven man and his goal is to make his ship the best attack transport in the Pacific Fleet. HIs drive whittles down the rough edges and shows up the weak leaders and followers. He makes few friends but ultimately gains the respect of many. This book is an excellent leadership text and would aid many, in the military as well as the civilian world, as they work with what they have been given and turn their people into a cohesive whole. This is a masculine book; women appear only in letters. It is a monastic existence as the men serve the Gods of War and now that the bulk of U. S. Naval ships are crewed by men and women, it is a reflection on an era that is rapidly slipping into the realm of memories.
