very interesting story, not very well written.......2006-04-05
I agree with almost every other reviewer in that I found this third-person account really distracting and annoying. I think I could have tolerated the terrible and ignorant writing if the author had just used the first person. But the story itself is amazing. The author, Margie Danielsen, actually saw her abusive husband, who had married her using a false identity, profiled on "America's Most Wanted"! Inexplicably, she went on to hire a private investigator and endanger herself and her children, when she could have simply contacted the number on the screen and told law enforcement about her suspicions. She should have saved the money she spent on the PI to hire a better ghost writer or editor. Margie probably seemed like the perfect victim to Paul Mack. She kept ignoring her common sense over and over, forgiving him even as his behavior became more strange and threatening. What I found truly fascinating about this book is that it gives us a look inside the mind of the all-too-willing victim of a pathological narcissist and con man. This woman was looking for her prince charming. As is the case with so many of us looking for a relationship too good to be true, she found instead a user and criminal who had no problem telling her just what she wanted to hear. In the course of a very brief marriage, Paul Mack lied constantly, had Margie sign over all of her assets to him, and even had his friends kidnap her children. Pathological narcissists are amazingly good at recruiting friends and even law enforcement and court officials in their campaigns of harassment and manipulation against their victims. Particularly telling is the part where, after being imprisoned for murder, Mack continued to attempt to prey on Margie and his vulnerable teenage daughter, who wanted to believe her father was a victim of the system. Mack alternated attempts to use charm and menace against Margie right up to the end of the book, from inside the walls of prison.
Excellent Page Turning Story! I Recommend Highly!.......2006-03-01

YOU could end up with someone like this ! luckily my daughter works as a nurse at the local dept of corrections and now says before she dates anyone seriously she's GONNA DO A BACKGROUND CHECK ON THEM!! this is a must read for all women who think they cant be tricked by a devient man whom walks into their life..I RECOMMEND THIS PAGE TURNING STORY FOR ALL. heck.. even my hubby read this book and shuttered at the thought of our daughter meeting someone like this suave character!!!!
"Great Read".......2005-01-10
" Great True Story " In reading this book, I was amazed in all the steps she took to get this murderer caught all the time not knowing that this man was a murderer. Not many of us would have the courage or gone to the extent that she did. I say it is a great lesson in listening to your instincts. This could happen to any one. Just ask Amber Frey !!!
The anti-dating true crime book........2003-05-19
Here is the true story of the ideal man and marriage gone wrong. Margie Danielsen was a divorced mother of three. When she met Sean Paul Lanier in July, she began a whirlwind courtship that brought her romantic fantasies to life. He was everything that she had dreamed of in a man. In November, he presented her with a sapphire and diamond "promise" ring. They were married on Valentine's Day.
Things were going fine until Margie's best friend called six weeks later to say that Sean Paul was on television in a show called America's Most Wanted. But they said his name was Paul Steven Mack. He was being sought for the 19 February, 1987 rape and murder of Karen Winslett. He was also under investigation in connection with the disappearance and murder of his secretary, Annette Huddle. The nineteen-year-old had disappeared on 8 July. She was found floating in the river on 11 July.
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is extremely well written. I highly recommend. It will make any single woman stop and carefully evaluate her life before going out on a date!
Woe Is She.......2003-01-14
A stunning work of breathtaking ineptitude. To compare this book to a romance novel (as some reviewers have) demeans romance novels. Why is the story told in third person? Probably because it was ghost-written by someone too ashamed to have his name attached to such sophomoric drivel.
Book Description
The explosive definitive account of the Michael Jackson saga, chronicling the King of Pop's battles against child molestation charges from 1993 to 2005, from award-winning journalist
Diane Dimond, who broke the story first, over twelve years ago
Michael Jackson has long captured the world's attention, first as the dynamic lead singer of the Jackson Five, then during his highly successful breakout solo career. But somewhere along the line Jackson transformed himself into something hardly recognizable and was investigated -- not once, but twice -- for crimes we could hardly imagine.
Even now, after his unexpected acquittal on multiple charges of child molestation, there is a sense that the real truth behind the allegations is not known. The character of Michael Jackson -- from his humble beginnings to his rich career and the birth of Neverland Ranch -- is destined for great debate among fans, journalists, historians, and psychiatrists for years to come. In the meantime, there is Diane Dimond, the journalist of record on the Jackson case.
In November 2003, when the Santa Barbara county sheriff's department conducted another raid on Neverland Ranch, Diane Dimond and her camera crews were the only ones there to capture the moment and report the news to the world. Now, for the first time, Dimond recounts the multifaceted details of the Jackson case, utilizing her extensive notes and sources. What she tells us is a shocking story.
Be Careful Who You Love will take you behind the scenes and into the courtroom of one of the most controversial cases of the decade, while giving readers a dramatic glimpse of one reporter's vigilance and unending quest to uncover the truth.

lma.......2007-05-25
Dimond left the courtroom every time the state finished up and the defense came up which makes her reporting biased according to courtroom attendees. She also was sued once by Michael Jackson which makes her slightly less than credible to report on him. I skimmed through this book and it was basically the same stuff you hear on TV probably due to no one from Jackson's side would talk to Dimond. A waste of money.
Be careful who you love.......2007-01-05
Honestly, Michael Jackson was always my favourite singer and showman, and everything that was going on around him was of great interest to me. The child abuse scandals both in 1993 and in 2005 did make me feel a little nervous as I could not really be sure whether I liked a normal person or a pervert. I bought this book to try and sort out where the controversy lay. Although it's written by a journalist, I was surprised there was so little evidence of what might make me change my mind about the case. There was a lot of information about the case documents, written testimonies and whatever else might be related to the case, but no pictures of at least one piece of paper from these documents - so it remains at that, just the words of a journalist. Some transcripts of dialogues which still gave no clue about what had actually happened. All in all, I was bored reading this stuff, but one of the last chapters really gave me the creeps - the part about the jury entering the courtroom to pass the verdict but not looking up and desperately trying to show that they disagree with the verdict they have just decided on.
If you're an MJ fan, you may read that. But I doubt it may change your opinion about Michael, although this book is simply meant to make people change their minds or at least feel some doubt about his innocence.
Well written revealing behind the scenes view.......2006-07-20
Diane Dimond has done an extraordinary job of having delivered an organized, easy reading view behind the scenes of the molestation accusations and trial of Jackson. It's presented without bias in a factual and sequential manner that is fast reading and compelling. Diane Dimond should consider a new career as a true crime writer.
Better than I expected.......2006-03-31
Having followed the Jackson trial and reading the transcripts, I really expected this book to be a biased rehash of the Jackson trial. Insted I discovered it had a great narrative and less bias than I expected.
The story of the first Michael Jackson case (1993) took almost half the book, which is why I graded Be Careful Who You Love a 4. One of her primary sources was Ray Chandler, and I had already read his book. These chapters seemed like an abreviated version of All That Glitters, which I also have on my bookshelf. However, if you have not read this book, you will be glad she included the detail in these chapters.
When she discussed the witnesses on both sides during the recent trial, she gives them all a fair shake. She will admit when prosecution witnesses fell short, including the alleged victim's mother.
Of all books on this trial, I would recommend this one above all the others I have read.
If I could only give it -4 million stars..........2006-03-29
I cry for the poor trees whose wood was used to print copies of this lowly piece of trash. I refer you to Mr. Larry Landers' review of this book. For all those reasons, Diane Dimond is not a reliable source of information on this subject. An individual who, under the guise of journalism, makes one false and ludicrous claim after the other and reports them as facts from "credible sources" without repentance should not be looked upon as a source for anything except as a good example of the depths of shamelessness people will go to in order to line their own pockets. Dimond in my opinion is the true epitome of a parasite. If there was no Michael Jackson trial either in 1993 or 2003, then no one would give Dimond a second glance after she served them their Bavarian Creme at Dunkin' Donuts. Regardless about how one may feel about Michael Jackson, a journalist's job is to impartially report the unbiased facts. Yellow journalism is not journalism despite it's very unfortunate name.
She was on Hard Copy. Need anyone say more?
Book Description
IN JANUARY, 1995, SKULL AND BONE FRAGMENTS OF 64-YEAR-OLD LAS VEGAS MULTI-MILLIONAIRE, RON RUDIN, WERE DISCOVERED IN A REMOTE AND ROCKY RAVINE ALONG LAKE MOHAVE.... He'd been shot at least four times in the head, decapitated, and set on fire. Who could have turned on the ambitious real-estate ace with such bloodthirsty fury? Even before the remains were found, circumstantial evidence was building against Rudin's tempestuous 52-year-old wife, Margaret, who stood to inherit a handsome share of her husband's fortune. Rudin's friends also suspected Margaret, and Rudin himself had thought that his wife was trying to poison him when he was alive. Then a chilling caveat was discovered in Rudin's living trust: that should he die under violent circumstances, an investigation should be conducted. By the time authorities closed in on Margaret Rudin, she'd disappeared. It would take two-and-a-half years to hunt the Black Widow down, and to discover the cold-blooded secrets at the heart of a poisonous marriage....BUT VENGEANCE WOULD COME-FROM THE GRAVE.... Now, reporter Michael Fleeman delivers a startling glimpse into the mind of a woman who would stop at nothing to get what she wanted as she drove the man who had promised to love and honor her to secretly fear her. Fleeman also details the relentless pursuit of justice that would lead authorities from the glamorous faade of Las Vegas to a squalid apartment on the outskirts of Boston to hold the remorseless wife accountable for her shocking and unfathomable crimes.

Compelling Drama.......1999-09-10
This is an excellent book, a very quick read. The authors do an outstanding job of capturing the South Texas Catholic culture as well as the personalities of all of the main characters. This story would make for great non-fiction, but it's completely true, the characters all real. Anyone interested in cattle barons, oil bidness, a little Catholic church history, and the modern day "Old West" should read this compelling work.

Book Description
Set in New York in the years after the Civil War, this gripping, poignant book is the story of a love affair that ended in one of the most sensational murder trials of the nineteenth century. It is the story of two lovers: Albert Richardson, a dashing jouralist, and Abby Sage, a beautiful actress who had fled an abusive marriage. In 1869, in the lobby of the New York Tribune, Abby's jealous ex-husband fatally shot Richardson. The ensuing trial spiraled into a furious debate on the sanctity of marriage and the rights of women.

Shows how much things have and haven't changed.......1998-07-14
After the murder has been committed, the author spends time giving us the backgrounds of the three principle characters. Even if you aren't a history fan, don't skip these chapters because they'll help you understand the account of the actual trial. This is the story of a talented and intelligent woman who finds both the courage to leave and divorce her abusive alcoholic husband and to fall in love with a brave and decent man in spite of she went through. Then she loses her true love when her scum ex kills him. The chapters on the trial were difficult to endure because the defense team was so slick and the prosecution team was so lame. I was so angry with the prosecution team because they didn't even try to counter the defense team's "sanctity of marriage" ploy with the theme that no one on the jury would want to have his sister or daughter married to a drunken brute such as the defendant. Thank goodness the book tells us what happened to these people! ! after the trial, or it would be very depressing to read. I like the fact that the author gives us so many actual quotations from the original sources. I *really* hate books which are supposed to be factual accounts of true crimes but the authors include thoughts and dialog that are pure speculation because there is no reliable source for that information! Don't let the fact that this murder and trial happened over a hundred years ago stop you from reading it. Similar stories are happening today. Ann E. Nichols

keep it real.......2004-07-04
Say i have yet to read the book and just for my insite i know it is a very cool deal, by just what i know my prayers go out to her on a daily bases so keep it real my love goes out to the family it's in the lords hands, Once the book is reviewed by my self on the way i precieved it i'am sure my choice will give you all a better understanding of the truth from my point of view.
Interesting true crime novel.......2000-11-03
I became interested in this case when I realized someone I knew had been involved in the trial. The only information available on the Internet points to Virginia Larzelere's innocence, so I was curious as to how she was convicted of murder.
I was glad in reading this book as it paints such a clear portrait of this psycho woman, using facts and witness interviews, and includes information you wouldn't be able to get from reading court transcripts - information that was not admitted as evidence in the trial. If you're looking for an innocent person on death row, it sure isn't Virginia - it's amazing how much she got away with before she was finally caught.
It's no "In Cold Blood," but it's a fun little read.
Fact vs Fiction.......2000-04-05
I'd like to begin a personal review of this book by stating that I am not a writer, or a journalist but just an ordinary receptionist introduced to this case by a friend. I had never even heard of Virginia Lazalere before I read this book. I'd also like to say that the first mistake I made while helping to research this case was to actually read the book before looking into the facts.
Now that I have looked at both sides of the story, including transcripts of the case, police reports, and other valid information, I realize that this book is not a source of information I would use to form an opinion on whether someone should live or die. For a Mother's Love is based on a lot of newspaper reports and media hype, not court room transcripts and witness interviews. It seems that the author was so focused on sensationalizing this case that he didn't notice how many times he contradicts himself and the truth in various places throughout the book. I truly believe that the sole purpose of this book was to brainwash the reader with impertinent and irrelevant information.
I hope that readers will use their better judgment and actually study the facts. I believe that if people enjoy reading mystery novels or tabloids they have every right to do so but we should not enjoy a book that is written to further jeopardize someone who's life is already at stake. It's sad that the lack of integrity in some writers nowadays drives them to with just about anything to make a buck. I hope that they never have to sit on death row reading lies about themselves as they await their death. I'd like to challenge everyone out there to read about this case, form an opinion based on facts not fiction, because Virginia Lazalere is real, not some character in a book. She is also someone's mother, daughter, & friend and lost all of that in one day. What do we have to lose by checking out our justice system and making sure that they provide our jurors with ALL the facts and don't conveniently leave out information that would provide Plenty of Reasonable Doubt. I know I would want every piece of evidence examined if my life was at stake. It's very critical that we make the time to scrutinize the system for ourselves and for our children rather than just paying our tax dollars and turning a blind eye. Don't you agree?

Tainted Love: The True Story of Domestic Violence and the Bornhoeft Murder Trial.......2007-07-15
Tainted Love: The True Story of Domestic Violence and the Bornhoeft Murder Trial details the life of Shawn "Candy" Bornhoeft/Johnson. After being pregnant at age seventeen, Candy married her baby's father. Despite that she didn't want to get married, and had a nagging feeling that something was amiss, Candy wanted to do the "right" thing. Throughout the next decade, Candy would fight that nagging feeling while she tried to make an unhappy dysfunctional marriage work. In the end, Candy would rue the day she said "I do".
Tainted Love: The True Story of Domestic Violence and the Bornhoeft Murder Trial is an emotionally filled book in which the author tells her story about her first marriage and the dramatic events that unfolded after her subsequent divorce. The author also describes many of the clues leading up to this event that she should have noticed. She also shares her dismay with the American justice system in what she describes as a system in which the guilty are protected and the victims further victimized.
Powerful Story That Needs to Be Read .......2005-08-26
Johnson's book is a powerful story that needs to be heard. Domestic violence occurs all too frequently in our society. Johnson's courage in sharing her story with readers should be acknowledged. Her story is a raw look at a situation involving power and control that plays out in a violent way. I wish that everyone could see from her book that domestic violence can be ended. Her story opens up the complexities of being a woman and a mother in our current time. This book needs to be read so that people can be reminded that we still have a long way to go to achieve peace in our families and our communities.
What is the truth, April 3, 2005.......2005-04-05
I had a hard time defining which facts andconversations where true and what was assumption. After reading this book onewill question the honesty and integrity of the author. There are far too manycontradictions for a reader to comprehend just who is dysfunctional and whoisn't. I hope the concern is unwarranted, but the contradictions are on goingthroughout the book. But I do wish the author and her family the best.
This is the worst book ever.......2005-04-05
This book is the worst book I have ever read in my life, Candy had not filled all the pages there are a bunch of blank pages in this book and the spaceing is way to far apart. I also don't agree that this book will make a good movie, I know that if it was made into a movie then I would never go to see it.
A story that needed to be told.......2005-03-21
Candy Johnson shares a poignant story of domestic violence, control, and love. The book is written matter-of-factly, as if she was talking openly to her readers without worrying about what they might think. It's genuine. I would recommend Tainted Love to all young women who are embarking on the exciting journey of love and relationships as a warning about how easily one can become caught in a web of control and psychological torment. I would recommend it to young men, so that they might hear one woman's account of true love - what it looks and feels like, and I would recommend it to anyone else who would like to read a good story about real people. I smiled, I cried, I think this would make a good movie. As a fellow human I am grateful to Ms. Johnson for having taken the time and gone to what must have been a supreme effort to write it all down.
