The Other End of the Leash begins with an eloquently simple premise: "All dogs are brilliant at perceiving the slightest movement that we make, and they assume each tiny movement has meaning." With that in mind, all of Dr. Patricia McConnell's recommendations for communicating with your canine make immediate sense. Don't we all automatically bend forward when coaxing a dog to come and play? Break eye contact when we wish to avoid a confrontation? While these instinctive behaviors are right on target, a number of other habits aren't so positive, and McConnell helps us break them with both humor and common sense.

Chapters are categorized by senses such as sound, sight, and smell; specific pack behaviors such as dominance and play also merit their own sections. McConnell uses the same humor and patience she recommends with dogs on her readers. Whether she's referring to maggots as "a value-added commodity in canine economics" or ruminating on attempts to verbally cue her dogs to exit the house one at a time, her wise and gently self-deprecating book brings training--of both dogs and humans--to new levels. Jill Lightner

Book Description

The Other End of the Leash shares a revolutionary, new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in our four-legged friends.

After all, although humans and dogs share a remarkable relationship that is unique in the animal world, we are still two entirely different species, each shaped by our individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (like wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation.

The Other End of the Leash demonstrates how even the slightest changes in your voice and the way you stand can help your dog understand what you want. Once you start to think about your own behavior from the perspective of your dog, you’ll understand why much of what appears to be doggy-disobedience is simply a case of miscommunication. Inside you will learn
• How to use your voice so that your dog is more likely to do what you ask.
• Why “getting dominance” over your dog is a bad idea.
• Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble–and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of trouble.
• How dogs and humans share personality types–and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alphawannabees!”

In her own insightful, compelling style, Patricia McConnell combines wonderful true stories about people and dogs with a new, accessible scientific perspective on how they should behave around each other. This is a book that strives to help you make the most of life with your dog, and to prevent problems that might arise in that most rewarding of relationships.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-10-10

This book was a truly great source if you are looking to understand the behavior of your dog better. It is not a training manual, but there are things that dog owners and potential dog owners can learn from the information in the book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in dogs!

5 out of 5 stars This book is really great!.......2007-10-05

I just finished reading this book and I have to say, I loved it! The tone of the author is personable and not at all condescending. She has some fascinating ideas about primates and canids and uses amazing sources to back them up. This is not a training manual. I see it as more as a guide to dog and interspecies behavior that should accompany a training book and some real life classes. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for all dog owners.......2007-09-26

"The Other End of the Leash" is facinating reading for dog owners as well as non-owners. Easy reading and lots of eye opening facts about why dogs act like they do.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-09-06

Reading other peoples' reviews, I noticed that a common complaint is that this book talks too much about primates. Hey, humans are primates too! It's important to understand our own behaviors - why we do the things we do - just as it is important to understand our dogs' behaviors. This book made me hyper-aware of how I was acting around my dogs, how my good intentions were being misunderstood, and what we CAN do to communicate effectively with our four-legged friends.

This is not exactly a how-to reference manual, but McConnell does give some great suggestions for dealing with certain behaviors which I have used on my own dogs. I found this book to be engaging from cover to cover and recommend it to anyone who has a dog, is thinking about getting a dog, or knows someone who has a dog. In fact, I wish everyone who will come into contact with my dogs could read this book first :)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, engaging, and clear.......2007-08-12

A funny, engaging, and sometimes eye-opening introduction to human-canine communication. This book is less about how dogs act, and more about how they perceive our actions. It is a great book for first time (and often long time) dog owners.

Just today, a man asked if he could pet my dog. He said he'd owned dogs all his life. I told him that he could, and he immediately leaned forward over my dog, grabbed his muzzle, looked full into his face and started smiling at him. After I got the idiot to let go (he looked very offended) I wanted to hit him in the face with a copy of this book. It should be a prerequisite read for owning a dog.

If you don't understand why this mans actions were so dangerous, please buy, borrow, or steal this book and read it before you even look at another dog!

5 out of 5 stars Death can be awkward.......1999-12-11

Just as the title suggests, this is a practical guide, rich with examples and narrative of both correct and incorrect approaches to this sensitive subject. The research presented in this book also suggests how and by whom a death notification should be done. I enjoyed the straightforward manner in which this book is written. I recommend this book to anyone who may someday need to inform others of a loss.

    Book Description

From the internationally bestselling author and beloved actress comes a brilliantly fun-loving and inspiring story of unconditional love.

Shirley MacLaine has found a perfect love in the furry bundle of irresistible canine charms that is Terry. With her winning terrier ways and an endless wellspring of love with no strings attached, Terry has succeeded in doing what no one before her ever has: slowing Shirley's peripatetic travels, shifting the actress/author's global axis to hearth and home. Now there are few greater pleasures for Shirley than being with Terry on her ranch or on a New York street, romping on the beach together, or sharing a long plane ride to a new location for making a film. With Terry by her side, Shirley sees the world in new ways she never thought possible.

As we join Shirley and Terry we see through their eyes how they each provide a window for exploring the nature of love. Together they shared at least one past life in ancient Egypt, and possibly more. Together, too, they seek to understand world events today: Are we beginning to fulfill the ancient Biblical prophecies? Is Armageddon looming? And of course there is Terry as a constant gateway to spirit, to being fully in each moment, to that boundless love that surpasses all understanding. In a unique twist that makes this audiobook such a delight, we see Terry's point of view on Shirley's domestic and inner life, as the terrier's mistress continually questions the deeper nature of reality.

This audiobook is an utterly charming, witty, and ultimately wise memoir of one of the truly remarkable women of our time. Out on a Leash is an irresistible bonbon for the legions of MacLaine listeners, and for dog-lovers everywhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-02-05

Great love story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I happened to get my own puppy soon after reading this book and wow - I have experienced the love firsthand.

    5 out of 5 stars Typical Shirley.......2006-09-10

I have followed Shirley's spritual path since she started writing about it. I read this book in a day and loved it. For anyone who has a spiritual connection with a 4 legged being, or any non human being, this book will touch your heart.
It is whimsical and real. It will make you smile and bring a tear.

I fell in love with Terry and Shirley's connection with him. Though she has many animals and loves them all, she has a special bond with Terry that only someone who has known that bond can understand. Keep writing Shirley!

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for Terry the Leasher & none for un-true-full Starlette Shirley ..........2005-10-10

Her previous book The Camino had 36 pages (my number again) with the word love in it & on p.146 "yellow ... deals with personal power." and on p.130 "Wisdom was represented by what we stood upon - our feet" and most animals are firmly grounded in unconditional love since they do have 4 feet and the snake is even more so by crawling with no feet. Being both of yellow skin and born under the snake sign, here is what I saw in:

This present book at least has 4 pages where unconditional love is mentioned, p.182 "It will be difficult to live without Terry's constant reminders that I am capable of unconditional love" which is quite close to the last page 199[a step before 200 or t(w)o zero or to oneness nothingness.) Shirley is still in the receiving end of unconditional love. Unless Shirley BE-comes UNCONDITIONAL LOVE or the state of GRACE, I will say that Shirley will not reach stardom in this lifetime. Since Shirley is still seeking for outside for-give-ness (e.g. neutering Terry) instead of GrOwING WITHIN or BE-ing it. Please shift from RE-act-ing as in all movies and BE a real god as played in "All my Reviews" by facing each own and chosen 'fall from heaven story'.

As far as i understand when each one of us is born, a physical star is also born in our universe. And both death are synchronous. This is one way to weave the relations between all entities and how the universe celebrates our passing through as in Osho's epitath. That's why there is the song "Wishing upon a star" because we all are. On p.167 (as seeks heaven) Terry, her dog states "Since my Mistress Mother is my child i hope i can teach her that growing up is essential to aging well. And the older she gets the further inside herself she should look. The more deeply she learns to love, the younger she'll be when she dies."

on p.166 (as seeks first perfect number & part of my number representation as Osiris) "Even now, while Terry is still in my life, I find myself WANTING to surround myself with animals ... I would be happy living with a menagerie... they point the way to a state of being we humans can only aspire to." To aspire is to hope and not be present. As far as I know at least 6 millions or 0.1% of humans are in that state of being.

on p.191 Terry states "The answers that MM seeks are hers to create." To create rather than react (a play on word) is to be god. This book mentioned twice that god is dog backward.

Dis-playing with my own example: I am creating situation where i am in synch with whatever the god in Neale Walsch's books (other books are in All my Reviews) & what Terry proclaimed here since 1996. The mundane was described in my letter to Jimmy Carter with my review of Prescription for Global Enlightenment. With that letter I realized that his Carter Center binds Jimmy in chains by being an institution, so will Shirley's animal menagerie.

On p.178 Shirley is closer to being Unconditional Love when she questioned "Should I have adopted the children I wanted to when I was younger? Is that the impulse Terry is bringing out in me? Or is she bringing out a desire to adopt children now? ...No, I've earned this peace and quiet" Shirley with all her 70 years of experience still question her own intuition and defaulting to the Western mind's cop-out.

She can break this impasse by choosing to adopt both animals and children. In my letter to Jimmy the statistics to my question "IS LOVE CONDITIONAL or UNCONDITIONAL?" is only valid in China. Among my 35 College Classmate in the US the ratio is far far lower. Only one, named very appropriately Violet, chose that Love IS Unconditional, although she can't do it either. The most common answer i get in US is that Unconditional Love can be for children.

Naturally that declaration by itself is a lie, as though, one can separate love into all different kinds. A very simple example will show the different Western & Eastern mindset. In Asia most mothers choose to sleep with their children since birth, thus be one with the infant (or Terry.) Westerners choose to put their children in a cradle and even in a separate room as in Disney 'Lady and the Tramp', which my 3 year-old son Imagine is watching everyday for the past week with 'Sleeping Beauty'.

Imagine is not happy when the masters put the puppy Lady out of the house in the beginning, and happy when Lady sneaks back in to the warmth of human bed. Initially when Kite found she was pregnant, I defer unconditionally to her choice. By the 3rd month she lost 20lb and then re-gained 30lb and we had inter_course until delivery day.

If the choice was given to me, I would have chosen to abort because I thought I didn't need to go through being a father. I'm delighted Kite gave us the chance to experience what it's to love a child unconditionally.

I have slapped Imagine on the hand or butt a few times before and always immediately apologized to him without excuses.

3 real child-rearing unconditional love examples to free your self:
. Whenever Imagine cries, Happy, i and Kite never told him to stop. I sometimes even play along and ask him to cry louder. Naturally after checking he's not in physical pain or hungry.
. Whenever Imagine falls down I always come closer and notice if he got physical scratch, otherwise I simply tell him to get up by himself.
. When faced with what we normally term as dangerous, unlike the dead Bush by 2006/3/7 and other un-secure/winning mentality, i turn that into a shared learning experience in unconditional love as in my review of "Lifelong Happiness."

One important thing I can find out with Imagine is to confirm that i can choose to be as young as i choose to be. This is in synch with how Kite sees me as neither male nor female, and my chosen epitath of 'a good person is not really that good and a bad person is not really that bad', since it's all a matter of enlarging perspective and be one with it all.

Whenever i declare my love to Kite and Happy or talk about Imagine, I always say that i also love every one else. Because we are all truly equal, as god in disguise, and we can learn a lot from our best teachers, the children, before their own 'fall from heaven story.' To die with children around is bliss, this is one reality check for Terry's statement of "The more deeply (Shirley) learns to love, the younger she'll be when she dies."

My own litmus test is to ask "what do you choose to do, if you knew you are going to be dead tomorrow". If you don't want to face the question, let me rephrase it without the 'if' which is in the past:

"Do you know you are not going to die tomorrow?" Which is from the present.

For people living for the future i'll rephrase the question as "Ever since human have been born into this world, there is one thing, and only one thing, coming from the future right into our face"

That's really the only leash we're all in, as equal as, in our own choice of 'fall from heaven story' too and choice of birth and death and everything in between. On the other side is timeless all-that-is unconditional love and we all are a facet of that oneness. So choose either to re-present fear or be unconditional love. Place your bet, rien-ne-vas-plus.

    5 out of 5 stars Look Deeper -- It's Here.......2005-02-01

I've decided to write a review after perusing all the ones already written, and after reading the book myself. I want any future potential buyer to know what's what. Disregard all those comments that say Shirley MacLaine has lost it, is fuzzy-minded or too sentimental. While "Out On a Limb" remains Shirley's best book so far, this one is clear-headed as can be and deals with a different subject, a magical animal. What those other comments indicate is the readers' lack of a sense of humor.

You know some people are so darn literal, right? In truth, there are wonderful insights and wisdoms throughout the book. If you don't like animals, or if you think a dog is a dog is a dog, then you probably won't relate that well to the book, unless you recognize truth when you see it. This experience Shirley is having with a canine is rare. Her dog, Terry. is not your father's four-legged pal or your mother's cutsy, cuddly snookums. It's not about 90% of what most of us have experienced with a family dog or an adorable, sweet, or smart dog or cat that we loved and remember fondly. No, this is that rare 10% of animals that come into one's life that transcend the ordinary pooch or pussy. You have to experience it to understand it.

Shirley is NOT ga-ga in her dotage over a pet! She has been gifted with one of these transcendent animals and she is right: they do speak to their humans in many ways, and they love you like no man or woman has ever loved you (unless you're very, very lucky) before. I'm not talking about devotion. That's ordinary, expected. I'm talking about the real thing: unconditional love. We use that expression too much these days and most of us are lying about it. Frankly, we don't know what we're talking about. It's something we want to do, something we want to get, but we seldom come close. When we do, it's unforgettable whether it happens with man, woman or beast. It's a spiritual experience to be treasured and Shirley is one lucky lady.

1 out of 5 stars Did not like it.......2004-04-28

I haven't read any of Shirley's works till this one. I really enjoy her movies. I love dogs so I thought I would try to read this book. I found this book to be very lacking in dog understanding. So maybe she wasn't professing to really understand dogs and was just using them as a tool to convey some type of message. But if this was the case I found the tool/message lacking and not worth the money.

This book is so powerful!! It should GLOW!! 150 years of statements on the topic of food storage and the reasons behind why. If you or anyone you know is to any degree lukewarm on this topic...it will chew you up and spit you out a changed person. This is an absolute classic...I am confident that many who read it will want to buy a case to give them out.

I lent mine to my sister in law and when she returned it she said "I didn't want it to end!" It has many statements of prophets I have read no where else...(substantiated of course) and the observations of the author Neal H. Leash are quotable...absolutely powerful! It also discusses the oft wondered..."should I share my food storage".

I took a highlighter through this book to mark the good parts and found I was highlighting almost the whole book!

Some could look at the title of the book and say "boring!"...but ye know not what ye say! If you have even an inkling of the spirit...you will not be disappointed.

The Dog Diet will captivate readers from page one, where they'll meet Patti Lawson, a diet-obsessed, single lawyer who, mourning the demise of her latest relationship, indulges in as many brands of chocolate as she can find. Fate--and a fortuitous trip to PETsMART--brings rascally puppy Sadie into Patti's petless, pristine if a bit sterile life. Since that day life hasn't been the same for Patti or for Sadie. Through a charming and captivating narrative, this memoir-cum-diet book takes a tongue-in-cheek look at our obsession with weight loss and will have readers laughing at themselves as they recognize their own dysfunctional relationship with food. In the process they will learn a simple and natural method for shedding unwanted pounds without the usual stress and disappointments that go along with typical dieting regimens. Some practical dog diet tips include: When it comes to snacking, if your dog likes it, it's probably not good for you! Eat quiet foods that don't emit enticing aromas they're good for you and won't arouse the ravished beast in your dog! Sure you can walk your dog, but a traditional work out can be adapted to include your dog you burn more calories and it's a lot more fun! Look at life through the eyes of your dog: learn how to live in the moment and don't hold grudges. Patti Lawson examines her own life with honesty and gives the readers an insightful view of her metamorphosis from stress and unhappiness to the joy of living through the loving and caring for her beloved dog, Sadie. In so many ways I identified with the emptiness an accomplished life cannot fill and the error in thinking that food can. Patti found the answers to regaining her health and inner peace and shares with us a sustainable path to a healthier life, physically and emotionally. She gives us a positive uncomplicated approach to caring for ourselves in good times and bad, simple, tasteful and healthy options to our toxic eating patterns and a warm and humerous story of how a small dog caused so much disorder she adapted to survive and found herself thriving. Any dog lover will appreciate her story and commitment but the life lessons and suggestions are for us all and I highly reccommend it. This is also a book I'm giving as gifts to those "hard to buy for" and no one has been disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars DOGGIE DIET AND FUN TO READ.......2007-07-19

This a very cute book regarding a professional woman who after two bad relationships decides to get a dog. She adopts a dog from a shelter and it really changes her life for the better. The author tells how the dog helped her lose weight, by changing her eating habits and making her exercise more. The dog not only helps her lose weight, but also lose weight in a fun manner. The author has a very humorous style of writing. I found this book very enjoyable to read and I highly recommend it. Besides for a humorous read, this book also has some good diet and exercise tips.

    5 out of 5 stars A great, fun book!.......2007-06-22

I loved this book! I really enjoyed reading it and I got some great dieting ideas (and life perspectives). For example, I am now implementing her idea of having a salad box. Actually, I have two of them that are about the size of shoeboxes that I bought for $1 each at the 99cent store.

Now, as soon as I buy my salad veggies, I clean them, chop or remove whatever leaves I need to, and put them in the salad boxes with a paper towel on top...and turn the box upside down (to let the extra moisture go into the paper towel).

Since I eat salads (with sprouts) every day, this has really helped me save time. Also, I find that I am throwing out less wilted lettuce and spinach or other salad veggies. So I am not wasting food and I am saving money.

This sweet book also shows how important animals can be in our lives...and that instead of complaining about having to clean up after them or take care of them...to realize...amoung other things...that you are burning more calories taking care of your pets...ha!

Thanks Patti for your inspiring book.

5 out of 5 stars The Dog Diet Book.......2007-01-24

This is one of the best books I've read recently. It has you rolling in the floor laughing and might even bring a tear as you connect with the writer and Sadie. I challenge any dog lover or someone who has tried to lose weight not to love this book. It is wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Great if you're looking for an amusing memoir, not a 'how-to-raise-a dog' book........2007-01-24

If you liked John Grogan's "Marley and Me" about a man, his family and their 'bad' but lovable dog, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this book. However, like Grogan's chronicle, this is NOT about how to raise a dog. For that sort of book, you'd do much better to check out something along the line of Cesar Milan's book, and/or watch him as "The Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic channel. (This is especially true if you are looking at rescue dogs or at acquiring a male dog from a dominant breed--Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, etc.)

That said, Patti Lawson makes some excellent points about dogs, how they view life and what they can teach us. She catalogs her own story of how her relationship with a pup took her on a journey from self-involvement to being present in the world, with a new appreciation for everything from smells to simply being in the present moment. Her description of standing at a buffet of Indian food and smelling it appreciatively is one that I will remember for a long time.

I enjoyed her story and the summary boxes within it about the lessons she learned.

4 out of 5 stars Calling all dog lovers!.......2006-03-22

Independent and single Jane Connor loved the simple joy of competing in competitions with her four legged friends so when she was approached to be filmed for a documentary about life in the dog show circuit, she quickly turned it down.
All that changed though when her home and business got burned to the ground in an Arizona fire that left Jane with nothing. She reluctantly contacted Angela, the film maker and agreed to be taped over the course of the summer with her dog Shadow while they competed for the grand prize of $100,000 which would be more than enough to rebuild her life.
Cole Forrest along with his 8 year old daughter Teri, and his talented little papillon Dobby also are on the same dog circuit for the summer. Cole lost his wife two years ago to cancer and is spending the summer trying to reconnect with his daughter while touring with Dobby.
Jane and Cole have an instant attraction to each other but they have many hurdles that must be overcome before they can come together and admit their true feelings for each other.
A New Leash On Life is a fun easy to read book about love and taking chances on a new life when you least expect it. I am actually surprised that more people have not read and reviewed this book.

    2 out of 5 stars I've read better.......2006-02-26

As someone who has shown dogs in AKC conformation shows for over 14 years, I was offended by the author's obvious distain for the sport. It is the typical "performance only exhibitor" attitude, which is that conformation showing is nothing more than a "beauty contest". This attitude is ignorant and shows a total lack of understanding of the purpose of conformations shows and how they are actually judged.
Another thing I found annoying was the author's unending, over the top gushing over the Golden Retreiver breed (a breed I personally loath). As with any breed, Golden Retreivers are NOT the perfect dog breed, and are certainly NOT the right breed for everyone. There is no perfect breed, or breed that suits everyones's needs, tastes or lifestyles. To read this book one would think that Golden Retrievers were perfect, and no other breeds exist. The constant portrayal of this breed as a breed that can do no wrong got old very fast. Even though other breeds were mentioned, their positive attributes were certainly not mentioned in such detail. A little more honest, open minded, and educated view of the breeds, and of all types of dog show competitions would be very much appreciated.
To give credit, the story line was interesting and the writing style was both descriptive and entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars amusing road show "tail".......2005-11-30

Dog show trainer Jane Connor has had a successful career until a wildfire destroyed her Arizona home. Since she failed to pay her biannual insurance bill as the envelop slipped under her car seat, a stunned Jane feels like stupid burnt toast when she learns she has nothing though she rescued all her canine pals and is a bit of a heroine in the Flagstaff area.

Needing income, Jane accepts an offer from producer Angela Gardner of Rising Star Production to star with her dog Shadow in a documentary film on canine agility competitions. The only problem with the job is sharing the traveling RV with several people. First there is bubbles (as she classifies the enthusiastic over everything Angela) who can drive the self deprecating Jane to lunacy with her energy that would wear out the bunny. Then there is handsome rival widower Cole Forest (and his nasty, at least to Jane, daughter).

Though lacking some of the bite from tales like GONE TO THE DOGS, etc.), A NEW LEASH ON LIFE is an amusing road show that looks deeply into the lives of people and canines involved in agility competitions. Dog aficionados will appreciate the deep look at those DIAMOND IN THE RUFF competitors as their owners ready them for the shows. Teri is filled with angst and is a vulnerable child rarely seen so sensitively written in literature. Though Jane's self-censuring becomes an irritating bark, fans will enjoy who let the dogs out escapades.

I bought this because a friend was on the plane when it crashed. The story and character development is very interesting; however, in many places, the technical explanations of planes and flying was too much. It's interesting to compare aviation then to now. My copy didn't include the pictures so I plan to buy another one that does.

    Book Description

A collection of travel essays, written with an irresistible sense of humor, keen insight, and a taste for the off-beat. Off the Leash is an exuberant grand tour of some of Vermont's most interesting and undervalued places--from the Domestic Resurrection Circus performed by giant puppets in Glover, to the Dowser's Labyrinth in Danville, to the birthplace of Joseph Smith, one of the founders of the Mormon Church, in Sharon. Vermont is full of quirky places and colorful history, and Helen Husher's collection of stories about her favorite haunts is some of the most captivating travel writing we've seen in years. At turns irreverent and witty, philosophical and wise--and always surprising--Off the Leash has elements in common with Bill Bryson's The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America and Ian Frazier's Great Plains. This book goes beyond Vermont and well beyond the world of tourism to explore "the richness of life and the treasures in it, and how we lose these things in a world that seems to be mostly about speed and cash." It's a book sure to interest anyone with a taste for eccentric stories, for small-town dramas, for the way our places make us who we are. This collection is a finalist for the Heekin Group Foundation Writing Award.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Little Book.......2002-10-10

This book was given to me as a gift from a friend of mine who knows how fanatically in love with my home state I am. I was skeptical, expecting another quaintifying take on how picturesque Vermont supposedly is. Instead, I found a thoughtful, well-researched book, full of discoveries and anecdotes surprising even to a Vermonter whose family has lived in the state for generations. Husher captures what's truly amazing about the state, and any small place really - the accessibility and exhilarating simplicity of its beauty and its history.

5 out of 5 stars Open your eyes.......2002-04-15

This book describes a number of fascinating ordinary places that are tucked around the state of Vermont. What makes the places fascinating is Husher's historical details- -for each place, she tells the story of how the site came to be and what made it famous. Some of the sites, like the Donohue Sea Caves are eons old, while others like the Bread and Puppet Museum were developed only recently. Some are famous, like Champ, the monster of the deep, while others are virtually unknown, like the Fenian Raids of 1866 and 1870.

Although Husher probably didn't intend to make a statement about art, I found the juxtaposition of the state highway rest area art and the Bread and Circus Musuem quite telling. She describes how a group of artists, including some famous ones, in the 1970s created a series of sculptures to be displayed to ordinary people at rest stops. Since this was to be people's art, it was made in ordinary media such as concrete. Funny enough, even though people drive by these creations every day and walk right past them at the rest stops, nobody seems to notice them, and the concrete is rotting away in the elements. Is this a tragedy? For whom? It seems to me that if the art is so unengaging that people don't notice it even when it's placed right in front of their faces, it's not art at all but a sad Emperor's new clothes kind of waste of space. In contrast, other art described in this book, such as the puppets at the Bread and Puppet Circus are so compelling and interesting, that they draw people in to see them in such a far-off corner of the state as Glover. Likewise, the sculpted granite headstones in the Hope Cemetery in Barre were created by artists who work in a medium that would last for generations. That's because they were doing their art on commission, responding to the wishes of their patrons and communicating through their art to their entire community. The abandoned highway art seems more like taunt the audience- -give them something incomprehensible and ugly, but since the audience won't appreciate it anyway, don't bother to make it last.

5 out of 5 stars Finding interest in the commonplace.......2000-06-23

This is a well-written, relaxing read that takes pleasure in common things. Far from being a guidebook in the usual sense, it guides the reader into a state of mind that helps him view his own world with more interest, even if he never visits Husher's Vermont.

5 out of 5 stars The real Vermont, from a rusty Subaru.......1999-12-04

I love this book! Helen Husher makes a great tour guide. She spends as little money as she can while bumping along Vermont's back roads and interstates to find the quirkiest and most inspiring places and stories. A travel book like no other.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best books in the series.......2007-02-27

if not the best. Ms. Conant stays on topic without the rambling that characterizes her later books. Her descriptions of dogs are spot on. Her descriptions of people are true and unstereotyped. She's written a nice mystery with a workable if not too surprising plot. The gem in this is the obedience club setting, the dogs and the main characters, the dog loving Holly, Kevin the burly cop, Rita, her psychologist tenant, and the whole Cambridge dog training club. Conant writes about dogs and dog people with freshness and telling familiarity. You will see your own dogs in hers, and enjoy the book all the more for it.

4 out of 5 stars I think an auspicious beginning to a dog lovers' series........2006-07-01

I really enjoy "The Cat Who" series as well as "Sneaky Pie Brown", but as much as I enjoy cats, I love dogs far more. Dogs have always been a part of my life, so I could hardly wait to begin this series. This first book did not disappoint. Ms. Conant knows the dog world, and she writes a pretty good story too. In this book Holly sets out to find out who strangled a fellow dog club member at one of their Thursday night training sessions at the old armouries. I like Holly Winter too. And her Rowdy is a gem. Anyway, I look forward to reading of their adventures in subsequent books.

1 out of 5 stars You'd better be a dog fanatic or trainer!!!.......2002-07-21

I love dogs but if I had wanted to know the ins and outs of dog obedience training, including the different levels snd sub-levels, I would have bought a manual. I wanted a mystery with fully fleshed out characters and a plot that kept me guessing. I got neither. The characters were neither likeable nor substantive. Except for the cop next door, I have no idea what they even look like or what, if anything, they care about besides dogs. The plot was predictable and the action stuck in first gear. Maybe the series inmproves after this book. I'm not taking that chance.

    5 out of 5 stars A extremely good read.......2000-07-18

this is one of my all time favorites and has to be one of the best books i ever read. an exellent beginning to an extremely good series.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful weekend read!.......1999-05-04

What a great story for dog lover's! I think I finally understand how obedience titles are awarded. Miss Conant draws the reader into the cozy Cambridge world and successfully portrays the unusual relationships that often form in dog training classes. People from such diverse backgrounds join together with one thing in common - a love of dogs! She accurately depicts some of the eccentric and frankly, zany personalities one finds in the dog show world. Her relationship with her vet adds further intersting and romantic plot direction. Her insights into how we all cope with the loss of our best friends were very touching. I enjoyed the book immensely and look forward to reading others in her series.
