Book Description
The first book in the Newmarket Shooting Script Series reissued with new material to coincide with the Warner Bros. theatrical re-release and special 10th anniversary DVD launch of this modern classic.
This expanded edition draws from the many new extras that are being created for the DVD, including 90 minutes of commentary by Darabont, documentary material on the making of the film, and a tribute parody of the film.
Nominated for 7 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay, The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, is an extraordinary tale of hope and survival inside a maximum security prison. Based on a Stephen King novella, Frank Darabont's screenplay follows the complex twenty-year relationship between two convicts who have little in commonexcept friendship.
Darabont personally wrote and/or assembled all of the content in The Shawshank Redemption: The Shooting Script, as follows:
- Introductions by King and Darabont on the movie's genesis
- The shooting script in its original form ("the one I wrote, the one Castle Rock decided to make, the one my cast and crew dealt with every day")
- Detailed analysis of script-to-screen changes (26 pages) showing why and how scenes were cut, and how some scenes were handled technically
- Two storyboard sequences, with commentary
- Stills section (35 photos)
- Afterword by Darabont about his experience in Hollywood ("It took me nine years of saving, struggling, and honing my craft before I started making my living as a writer.")
- 35 b/w photos, plus storyboards

Shawshank Shooting Script-KC review.......2007-02-11
Wonderful! Very insightful and informative. A great addition to anyone's bookshelf. I highly recommend it.
Excellent study guide of Shawshank Redemption.......2006-03-04
This is an excellent book to aid in the understanding of Shawshank Redemption, whether studying english or mass media.
I found the book to contain additional details on story boards and amended scenes, which indicate the way the script writer, Frank Darabont, adapted the story to film.
Thoroughly enjoyed the script, especially as I can read it in places I can't view the film, i.e. work.
Great in depth exploration.......2004-10-27
As a rule, don't buy shooting scripts if you want to write a screenplay. Shooting scripts are finished products.
That said, screenwriters can learn from this exploration of the classic movie (yes, folks, it is a classic, it's been shown a billion times on TNT), by reading the deleted scenes (my personal favorite is one about the publicity of Warden Norton's prison-to-work scheme, in which Heywood, played in the movie by William Sadler, gets his best and sharpest lines for someone who's supposed to be the dunce of the movie), the storyboards, the explanations of which scenes were kept, etc.
And for people who just love the movie, it's a must-own.
A great buy for any film student or "Shawshank..." lover.......2001-08-30
As Frank Darabont says in the introduction of the book, who else would buy the screenplay unless they really want to know more about the film? Sticking to that idea, Darabont has given the film student/buff, and those who simply love the movie, a real treat with this book. Not only does it contain the screenplay, it's the screenplay (I emphasize) AS IT WAS WRITTEN BEFORE FILMING. He's published it exactly as he wrote it when he adapted it from King's novella. I point this out because, as Darabont himself points out in the intro, so many screenplays that are thrown out by merchandise wizards are nothing but the finished movie transcribed. And really, what good is that to someone who wants a deeper knowledge of the film?
Not only does he give us the original screenplay, he gives us a scene-by-scene comparison of the screenplay vs. the finished film, and why things got changed/added/left out. This, in particular, says a lot about Darabont to me. This is a man who wants to use his work not only to be what it is (a GREAT film), but to educate as well. This book inspires. He includes storyboards, as well (including a storyboard for a deleted scene- oh, goody, goody!) and introductions by both himself and Stephen King, and a summarizing bit of advice to budding filmmakers and screenwriters. I devoured this book in short time (one night), lol, and found myself going back to the film to compare and analyze- if you don't do the same after reading it, I'll eat my foot.. okay, maybe not. But something drastic, I warrant you. If you are at all inclined to learn about filmmaking, writing, or even if you just love "The Shawshank Redemption" (which is what lead me to the book in the first place), this is a real must-have. It's worth the price alone just to read what he had to say about filming Freeman's scene walking through the field after discovering Andy's message. Trust me. By the way, fellow "Shawshank..." lovers are welcome to ...discuss it. Enjoy this book, everyone. It's a real find. And I'm SO glad I chose to buy it. The ONLY reason I give it four stars as opposed to five is because, personally, I would have liked to have seen more storyboards.
It just doesn't get any closer than this..........2001-06-28
This is a truly fantastic piece of work!!! If you really enjoyed the movie, and is fascinated by the art of filmaking, this book is for you. More than just the script of the film, the analysis by Frank Darabont takes to a totally different level and perspective. It actually makes you think like a Director. Other than this, just being in the production yourself... This is a true making-of The Shawshank Redemption, that is totally worth the price.

This book is wonderful!.......1999-12-14
This book really brings to life what living in Northern Canada was about in the early 1900's. I found myself thinking what it would be like in Elizabeth's shoes. She endured such hardships just to be with the man she loved. What a great lovestory! It is excellent, just like all of Jeanette Oke's other books that I have read. I can't wait until it is printed again so I can have my own copy.
What a GREAT book!.......1999-11-04
I love ever Janette Oke book I've ever read, but this is a favorite! I hope everyone who reads this liked it as much as I did!
It deserves many more stars!.......1999-10-03
This is my favorite series from Oke. I wish it was longer. I never wanted the book to end. Oke is a wonderful author, and this is a must read book.
Book Description
Women of all ages and colors in simple, patterned dresses fill Rojas's works, full of confidence and big smiles. And men with soft, slumped bodies are often depicted naked in simple, flowing lines. The compassion and humor in these reversals, along with the exuberance of Rojas's creative power in a barrage of media--among them vibrant gouache-on-panel painting, installation, film, printmaking, quilting and banjo--have brought her increasing attention. The New York Times's Roberta Smith wrote in a 2004 review that Rojas's work "brims with promise."Hope Springs Eternal, the artist's first book, is not just an in-depth selection of images but an object in itself, its soft cover embossed with a quilted motif. Rojas studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago, she is represented by Deitch Projects in New York and her work has appeared in the traveling show, Beautiful Losers, among others.

Prairie River #4.......2007-03-11
I have read the whole series of Prairie River. I loved them all. I could not put them down and I am not a big reader. I am anxiously waiting more books to come out. I recommend these books.
Hope springs eternal (Prairie River #4).......2005-08-06
Hope Springs Eternal is another great addition to the Prairie River series. I feel like anyone who reads this book will be touched by the faith each of the characters have and how faith keeps them going even in the hardest of times. I am looking forward to the next book in this series to see what happens. The only bad part about this book is that it was too short.

Customer Reviews:
Great Read!!.......2007-02-10
Janette Oke has fast become one of my favorite authors. This series is a keeper. Following Elizabeth & Wynn Delaney is relaxing and encouraging.
They have daily struggles but come out on top because of their faith in God!
What was the author thinking?.......2005-04-12
I was so enthralled with the story of Elizabeth and Wynn in the first three books of this series, and could not wait to read this one, but I found it terribly disappointing. The hallmark of these books was the tender way in which Elizabeth and Wynn loved and cared for each other. There were also interesting story lines about Wynn's work and living in the north. All of that was missing from this book. The dialogue was stiff and the story line changed from adventure to evangalism, making Elizabeth and Wynn into missionaries. I am a Christian and even I began to be bored with these characters. I also do not agree with the author's passion of wrenching children from Elizabeth and Wynn. So, in my mind their story ends differently. When they live in Athabasca, and Wynn has a regular work schedule, they will indeed have children of their own as well as the two they adopt. Into each life God also wants a little SUNSHINE to fall! The author seemed to rush this to press (both the third and fourth book were published in the same year) without giving it the same attention she obviously gave the first three books.
Was this book written by the same Author as 1,2,and3?.......2005-02-19
I devoured the first three books of this series. My heart was with Wynn and Elizabeth, I ached to know how things turned out And after begging my husband, he finally went and got it. I started to feast, aching to know if they would ever have a child. What other adventures were in store?
I flounderd toward the middle of this book. Having to re read and back track a little, but it was no use... It did not even seem to be the same Wynn and Elizabeth. They did not seem to speak the same, care the same. They lacked...themselves. I put it down, stopping there and just sat...not completing it at all.
Another excellent book by Jeanette Oke.......2000-06-11
Mrs. Oke tells a wonderful tale in this conclusion of the Canadian West series. You feel as if you are right there with Elizabeth as she struggles to make friends in the Indian village.

Getting By with a Little Help from Their Friends........2006-06-02
Without giving too much away in this lovely Hinton novel, I really enjoyed my first of her books about reverend Charlotte Stewart and her 4 friends as they share their problems together in ways only true friendship allows. Often heartache-filled, it also has great moments of humor that keep the story from becoming too weighty or depressing. These women are lively, but one wish I have is that Hinton would have involved us more in Nadine's particular story, because I found that one the most interesting, particularly the scene in the flower shop. A nice read without the violence and cheap gratuitousness one often finds elsewhere. I would like to read more novels of this quality.
Reading backwards.........2004-12-27
I haven't read the first book, but I enjoyed this book. I don't think they are comparable to my favorite movie, Steel Magnolias, but I did enjoy reading this book. Friendships are my favorite! I look forward to reading the first. The characters although enjoyable, they didn't have as much depth as I would like!
tend your soul's garden with this book!.......2002-10-22
Charming story about friendship, grief and the power of one's faith. Chapters begin with newsletters from the Garden Club illustrate the garden of our life.
Thoroughly enjoyed this read and highly recommend it. The story revolving around grief and how to carry on is most powerful and makes you want to go out in your garden and tend to your soul.
Get reacquainted with old friends.......2002-06-03
It is time to return to Hope Springs. The Cookbook Committee continues to meet, even after the cookbook has been finished, but the group keeps meeting, and each woman keeps an eye and her heart out on the others. The pastor, Charlotte Stewart is troubled by the undercurrents she senses, and the questions she struggles with. Nadine struggles with her daughter's death by trying to follow her, as the other women try to tempt her to stay. Margaret faces a health crisis as Jessie renews the marriage long given up as dead, and looks to new horizions . Framed by the Hope Springs Community Garden Club Newsletter the book unfolds as each of these women try to meet her challanges. It is the friendships that these women have forged that enable each to rise to her individual challange, but realize that the friendships that bind them are irreplaceable. Lynne Hinton has been able to continue the story that began in Friendship Cake and has continued to develop the characters that have grown so dear to our hearts. A wonderful book that does not disappoint, and leaves me wishing the next would be out sooner.
Steel Magnolias.......2002-05-01
Lynne Hinton's Friendship Cake used recipes to metaphorically show true friendship amongst 6 delightful and charming women. In the sequel, Garden of Faith the metaphors are beautifully placed in "Bea's Botanical Bits, Hope Springs Community Garden Club Newsletter."
The women of the Garden Club grew to understand her own faith. Young Pastor Charlotte is questioning her understanding of faith, while Margaret undergoes the first steps of dealing with a serious illness that could change the way she feels about what makes her a woman. Jesse is having a mini battle with her devotion of Hope Springs and what adventures lie beyond her small town and lastly Nadine whom we all remember from Friendship Cake lost her daughter in a car accident. She struggles with feelings of guilt about the death.
With all these weeds sprouting throughout the lives of the women from the Garden Club, Lynne Hinton shows us how God gives us all what we need when we need it. I truly enjoyed this book it was a fast read, and a page-turner. If I had to sum up my emotions, I would say Garden of Faith is a "feel good read." It's a book for everyone and a must read.

Hope Springs Maternal is a book about the young mothers who live in New York City’s shelters. Through extensive interviews with twenty-four young women of color living in temporary shelters who either were pregnant or had very young children, Jill Gerson sought to learn about the shelter users’ background, current living experiences, and subjective views of home, family, and parenting. Gerson also employed the life history approach to focus on the ways the mothers’ individual and collective biographies were shaped by both socioeconomic context and interpersonal experiences.
The interviews reveal that most of the mothers had experienced a range of disruptive experiences in childhood and adolescence and that their shelter use was closely related to the adverse economic realities with which many poor women of color are forced to contend. Based on the interview data and life history approach, Gerson concludes that the mothers living in shelters had engaged in a determined search for a safe haven that could help them complete their transition into an adult role and become parents able to consider the needs of their children. Their narratives speak to the capacity of the individual to use limited social resources as a self-righting developmental opportunity. The mothers’ transitional shelter use often resonated with a normative maturational thrust to create opportunities to develop economic and residential security and caring interpersonal and family relationships.

It sparked an emotion so deep...........2003-07-05
When I read this, I was expecting a major event, or a real plot, to occur. It never did. What happened along the way, though, was that it brought forth so many emotions. One of the story lines was so similar to one that I experienced that it opened a wound, and brought back a memory I had repressed. for so many years, and then it actually healed it. It made me realize thay I was not alone with these feelings I had. This book was very therapeutic for me. I only wish I had read the first two in the series first.
