Book Description

In order to thoroughly understand what makes Linux tick and why it works so well on a wide variety of systems, you need to delve deep into the heart of the kernel. The kernel handles all interactions between the CPU and the external world, and determines which programs will share processor time, in what order. It manages limited memory so well that hundreds of processes can share the system efficiently, and expertly organizes data transfers so that the CPU isn't kept waiting any longer than necessary for the relatively slow disks.

The third edition of Understanding the Linux Kernel takes you on a guided tour of the most significant data structures, algorithms, and programming tricks used in the kernel. Probing beyond superficial features, the authors offer valuable insights to people who want to know how things really work inside their machine. Important Intel-specific features are discussed. Relevant segments of code are dissected line by line. But the book covers more than just the functioning of the code; it explains the theoretical underpinnings of why Linux does things the way it does.

This edition of the book covers Version 2.6, which has seen significant changes to nearly every kernel subsystem, particularly in the areas of memory management and block devices. The book focuses on the following topics:

Understanding the Linux Kernel will acquaint you with all the inner workings of Linux, but it's more than just an academic exercise. You'll learn what conditions bring out Linux's best performance, and you'll see how it meets the challenge of providing good system response during process scheduling, file access, and memory management in a wide variety of environments. This book will help you make the most of your Linux system.

5 out of 5 stars The best linux kernel book.......2007-08-23

If you only read one kernel book, read this one. Also serves as a good general operating system design and implementation primer.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for all CS Students.......2007-08-09

I'm reading this book for fun, and I've been learning so much that I didn't know from Linux, wish our Operating System courses in Venezuela was taught following this book.

5 out of 5 stars N00BSp3Ak - Deciphering the Linux Kernel.......2007-07-17

To be honest, I am a complete newbie to Linux (more so, the kernel), having only recently shifted to Ubuntu (which, appropriately enough, is often called a "newbie's distribution"). Fortunately, I've had my share of background in C programming both in university and as an employee.

I've only recently delved into the "deeper" side of C - the kind that involves mapping memory and handling register sets to control hardware components. So far as I have read, this book is probably not suitable for the inexperienced, but with a little re-reading, anyone who has the least bit background in computer architecture, operating systems, and, of course, programming can catch up.

"Understanding the Linux Kernel" presents Linux in an abstracted manner, using diagrams whenever possible to illustrate how certain mechanisms - such as, let's say, memory allocation - are executed in the Linux kernel. The presentation, reviewed in line with the Linux kernel code itself, allows the average skilled programmer to obtain at least a basic understanding of Linux and the concept of operating systems in general. In the long run, this material will definitely add to (or completely revolutionize) your repertoire of programming techniques.

Required knowledge to be comfortable with the content are the C syntax, data structures, and an understanding of the binary and hexadecimal number systems.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not for beginners.......2006-08-03

Understanding the Linux Kernel is an excellent guide for those who have some experience using Linux, and would like to know what's going on under the hood. It's a comprehensive guide that not only describes how Linux boots and initializes itself, and how programs call functions inside the kernel, but actually goes down to the murky depths of interrupts, process switching, inter-process communication, and even memory management down to the level of the 80x86 processor instructions, registers and features (actually if you add it all up, memory management takes up most of the book -- a good thing!). Furthermore there are chapters about essentials such as file systems and device drivers.

The book specifically and explicitly focuses only on the 80x86 PC architecture so if you're interested in Linux on different platforms or if you're looking for a generic Linux kernel book, this one's not for you. Also, if you're just starting out with Linux (whether it be as user, programmer or administrator), there's a lot of information in here that you don't really need to know.

An important part of the kernel that's missing from the book is how networking is implemented. This is understandable, because it would probably require another 900+ pages (that's how thick this one is) to cover in as much detail as what the book DOES cover.

All in all, as an intermediate Linux administrator/user and a novice Linux programmer, I thought this was an excellent addition to my collection, even though I skipped some of the truely low-level parts where the authors go into Pentium registers and stuff like that. The fact that "80x86" is consistently printed as "80 × 86" (notice the multiplication character replacing the letter "x") was not enough of a nuisance to take away any of the 5 stars that I'm giving this one.

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-06-09

Are you curious about how Linux works and why it is so efficient? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Daniel Plerre Bovet and Marco Cesati, have done an outstanding job of writing a practical book that will help you find your way through the many thousands of lines of code.

Bovet and Cesati, begin by presenting a general picture of what is inside a Unix kernal and how Linux competes against other well-known Unix systems. Then, the authors explain how 80x86 processors include special circuits to address data in memory and how Linux exploits them. They continue by explaining how each process runs either in an unprivileged User Mode or in a privileged Kernal Mode. Then, the authors introduce interrupts and exceptions. Then, they discuss how synchronization mechanisms are needed so that all these requests can be serviced in a interleaved way by the kernal. Next, the authors discuss timing measurements. Then, they explain how Linux executes, in turn, every active process in the system so that all of them can progress toward their completions. They continue by describing the sophisticated techniques required to handle the most precious resource in the system. Next, the authors show you how the kernal copes with the requests for memory issued by greedy application programs. Then, they explain how a process running in User Mode makes requests to the kernal. They continue by describing how a process may send synchronization signals to other processes. Then, the authors introduce a general layer that supports many different filesystems. Next, they offer insights into special files and on the corresponding hardware device drivers. They also show you how to reduce disk accesses through the use of RAM. Then, they show you how user applications access normal files. Next, the authors explain the techniques used by Linux to ensure that enough memory is always available. Then, they illustrate the most frequently used Linux filesystem, namely Ext2 and its recent evolution, Ext3. They continue by introducing communication mechanisms other than signals available to User Mode processes. Finally, the authors explain how user applications are started.

This most excellent book helps you distinguish between crucial data structures and secondary ones. More importantly, this book helps you become a true Linux hacker.

5 out of 5 stars great baby journal!.......2007-08-28

This is a great journal. So cute. I looked at and bought many of these and this is the best one. Not too much detail but enough..easy to write it. Pockets for keepsakes. Came with scrapbooking picture frames for photos. I can't say enough good things!!

4 out of 5 stars This book is great!.......2007-08-27

I was looking for a baby book that would provide some versatility with what could be written. This book delivered. The pages had things like "some thoughts about before you were born" as opposed to "this is how I found out I was pregnant" - etc. It gives you a lot of room to write, but isn't overwhelming. It is cute, fun, and a great value for the price. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Great overall baby journal.......2007-08-20

i was skeptical about buying this because of what i read from the reviews about it having bible versus and being a somewhat religious baby journal. i do not consider myself religious by any means and none of the versus or quotes bothered me at all. yeah it does say a few things about heaven and being gifts from god and such but its nothing too extreme. if you're a pessimist when it comes to religion then you might not approve. it had places for everything i had wanted to remember for my daughter, and overall i like it very much.super cute.

5 out of 5 stars Very cute with great pages.......2007-08-13

I have enjoyed this book very much so far. There are all the "good" pages for baby memories and none of the frivilous ones, plus it goes out a few years.

5 out of 5 stars Best Thing I've Ever Done Was to Buy This Book for My Great Aunt Mary.......2007-09-28

I bought this book of questions for my Great Aunt Mary for her 100th birthday. And like another reviewer said, some of the questions did not apply to her, but, she did answer quite a few of the inquiries, and it was VERY interesting reading to see her answers. She passed away last Christmas at 108 years and 4 months old, and I placed this book out at her funeral for all to read, and everyone loved it. It had so many wonderful stories and quips to tell, all written in Aunt Mary's own hand. It made her memorial even more special. I've been given the book back, and will always treasure it. Aunt Mary and I were always very close, and I miss her very much, but that book brings back memories... I'd recommend this to everyone who wants to know more about other people. Lee

5 out of 5 stars First and Best Internet Purchase.......2007-09-09

I first bought a copy of this book in 1999 and gave it to my Great-Aunt for Christmas. It was my first internet purchase. She wrote it in for five years and gave it back to me full of family history. Although all of the questions did not apply to her as she never had children and didn't serve in the armed services, she used the extra pages to expand on the questions that did apply to her.

5 out of 5 stars The Story of a Lifetime.......2007-09-04

I found this book to be a pleasant surprise. I ordered it for my Nana. The cover is beautifully done, the pages are gold edged, it's a large book, but not fat, and it asks lots of questions. It divides ones life into sections starting with your memories of your grandparents, then your parents, your childhood, teen years, adult years, school life, home life, fads, movies, music, hobbies, marriage, grandchildren, happiest moments, saddest moments, etc. It covers everything. Unfortunately, my Nana was unable to finish this book before she died of bone cancer. I am still glad I have it. It's something for her great grandchildren to read since they will never meet her.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of great memories to look back on!.......2007-06-07

I just pulled my book out of the closet, as one of my siblings had a question about our great-grandfather. My Dad passed away 3 years ago and I so wish I had the whole book with his comments. It was just a little too late, as he was in poor health, so many of the questions are unanswered. I recommend this book for every grandparent to fill out and give as a gift to their grandchildren. It's priceless!

5 out of 5 stars My Father Loved it!.......2007-05-16

I bought this book for my dad to write down everything about him and he loves it! In fact he recommended it to his brother. A wonderful keepsake for the family.

The book is beautiful. Can't believe the price...would have paid a lot more for the quality. My husband loved it too! We just celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary. It's a perfect gift for any newlywed or engaged couple.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift!.......2007-08-22

We first received this book as a wedding gift. Each year we fill in the new information. What I really like about it is that it isn't so detailed and time consuming. If you're like me, if it's going to take too much time, it just keeps getting put off until you forget the info. This isn't like that at all. It's nice & to the point.

5 out of 5 stars Great find!.......2007-08-12

This was given to me as a shower gift with some beautiful pens. It's been really a nice ritual to fill it out with my husband every year and to look back and see how the story of our marriage progresses. I am giving it as a gift for the first time and an very excited to see how the recipient likes it.

5 out of 5 stars Our Wedding Anniversary Memory Book.......2007-08-03

I got this book for my husband for our first anniversary. I figured it covered the paper aspect as well as the time aspect of the gift giving. We enjoyed filling out the book together. The illustrations are beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Read.......2007-10-04

I am so sorry that I did not read this book 5 years ago. It explained why my mom behaves the way that she does. I think that everyone needs to read this because there is not a person alive that does not or will not love someone who has dementia or Alzheimers. It gives medical information that is easy to understand as well as ways to best deal with their loved one. It reassures the caregiver that they need to take care of themselves and it helps them to realize that thier loved one still loves them but is sometimes unable to show it in acceptable ways.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for caregivers.......2007-07-27

For those of us who are caregivers, this book is a lifesaver. Before reading this book I was certain that many of the behaviors that my family member exhibits were unique to her. While I often read about Alzheimer's, I never read anything that made me stop and realize that, first, I am not alone, and second, that there are ways that I can handle situations better. This book is full of great suggestions on how to deal with the many behavioral issues that are exhibited by those with Alzheimer's and dementia.

Whenever I have an especially difficult day, I go online to the Alzheimer's page and remind myself how difficult it is for my family member. This book drove home that message, yet more importantly provided me with some tools on how to deal with these issues. I cannot stress enough how much I thought our situation and the behaviors were unique; it is liberating to realize that they are not. As well, understanding why the person exhibits such behaviors makes it much easier to respond correctly.

I wish I could thank the authors personally for this book. I hope they both know that their wisdom, concern and awareness of the Alzheimer patient has made a difference for me, and I am certain has made a difference for many others.

Caregivers -- buy this book, you will find some stress greatly diminished.

5 out of 5 stars The 36 Hour Day.......2007-07-16

The 36-Hour Day is an excellent book for anyone dealing with Alzheimer's patients. It is hard for me to imagine anyone with the disease reading the book, but family members will benefit tremendously.

5 out of 5 stars The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People with Alzheimer Disease, Other Dementias, and Memory Loss in Later Life.......2007-07-01

Well-written, easy to read, and comprehansive..excellent resource! I have already recommended it to others facing a future as a caregiver.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for anyone that has an alzheimer family member, or anyone involved in the care of an alzheimer patient!!!!!!.......2007-06-11

I can not stress enough just how helpful and informative this book is. My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease 6 years ago. In those 6 years we have seen numerous doctors, taken numerous tests, spoke to many Social Workers, Home Health Aides, etc. NO ONE gave me the advice, information, suggestions, help, etc., anywhere near as well and thorough as "The 36 Hour Day".
I think so highly of this book and recommend it so much; that just last week, I had a meeting with the Director of Nursing, Head Nurse, and Social Worker at the nursing home where my Dad resides. I highly recommended this book and told the Dir. Of Nursing, it should be mandatory reading for anyone working in the facility.
If you have a loved one or are a care taker of someone with Alzheimer Disease---RUN do not walk, to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of this book.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed the way I learn and teach.......2007-04-04

I learned mind mapping using this book in 2002 and have been making them for learning, and for making decisions, ever since. Now I'm using them for teaching. There's just nothing like mind maps.

One thing I'd like to emphasize: if you think you can't make maps like the ones in the book because you "can't draw", you're in for a real surprise. The very act of drawing your map will draw out your creativity -- it's quite an amazing phenomenon! Your first maps will be timid -- expect that and keep on making them. Save those first maps to "map" your progress.

But if you feel more comfortable working at the computer, since the book came out a whole slew of mind mapping software has emerged and some good ones are free.

5 out of 5 stars I've found it useful.......2007-03-04

I don't remember how long ago I learned about mind maps, but it's been a while. And I have found them to be useful for organizing thoughts, taking notes on reading, and especially for lectures and even sermons in church.

This book is lavish with illustrations that quite honestly, would be hard for me to sit down and try to do to that quality. But I have found the color-friendly and picture-friendly technique of mind mapping to be useful for introducing the element of play into note taking -- and I've found that it can make an otherwise dull lecture a bit more interesting.

I think that sometimes you'll have to modify the techniques to fit your own personality and learning style. But over all, these techniques will help in a lot of learning and organizing situations.

4 out of 5 stars Great tool, but at times a bit elementary.......2007-01-10

If you happen to use dry erase walls for your meetings, or other types of planning, or find yourself to be a bit of a doodler rather than a 'conventional' note-taker, you'll really find this book helpful. Designed, it seems, primarily for note taking in grade school, it translates very well into other sorts of more 'adult' model-building and planning. I've taken some great tid-bits from it, and used it, almost immediately, with some adroitness and success for a series of meetings. It's a great way to systematize and visualize ideas and opinions without losing track of the conversation through too much attention payed to e-v-e-r-y l-i-t-t-l-e w-o-r-d.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but quite long and frankly a little repetitious.......2006-11-22

I'll recommend this book to people who already has some experience with mind mapping, but wants to get inspiration for new techniques.

I think it's best as a reference book, that you can browse for inspiration, for new mindmap-approaches to problemsolving. You learn about taking YES/NO decision with dyadic mindmapping. You learn to group mindmap, and lots of other stuff.

I wouldn't recommend it for mindmap-rookies. It's not a very pleasant book to read cover-to-cover. There's quite a lot of redundant information, and you spend a lot of time thinking, "haven't I read this before?" To get an introduction to mindmapping you should buy "How to mindmap", by Tony Buzan, instead.

Still worthwhile if you want some inspiration.

Like a lot of these books and courses, you need to do the tasks they suggest to improve. No point reading how and not persisting. This book outlines tasks, explains the progression clearly, and doesn't get trapped with jargon. If you've bothered to look at the book be bothered to do the homework and you'll improve.

5 out of 5 stars Get This Book!.......2007-07-08

The memory techniques taught in this book are tantamount to taking crib notes into an exam. They are, in fact, easier than writing things down. That goes for numbers, dates, events, lists and on and on.

You WILL amaze yourself. You WILL be able to quickly look through a deck of playing cards and immediately name the missing cards, you WILL be able to remember large numbers after hearing or reading them once, you WILL be able to remember lists of large numbers. You WILL be able to recall every scene in a movie or series of events in real life in precise chronological order.

The great thing about this book is that it blows you away with your own abilities. It's a 'self-help' book in the truest sense. You WILL feel better about yourself.

If you need a few tricks in your bag, how to remember things. This is the book. It was recommended by a phych professor who specializes in this subject and also a neuro scientist at a top medical school who also studies the inner workings of our crazy brains. Both can memorize lists of 25 objects after just hearing them once. Its truly amazing. The book has been around forever - check out the suits of these guys on the cover! But its timeless information.

1 out of 5 stars This book is not reader friedly. It is also dated........2007-04-21

This books does not cover any topic in enough deapth. It sounds almost silly at times. 75% of the text is fluff. A huge waste of time. Don't buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-03-07

After reading a couple of chapters, I was readily able to remember reasonable lists of items for our shopping trips better than my wife! ;-) However, upon reading more, I realized that the whole book could be summarized in just a few statements: To remember, you need to make the effort to remember. To help in that endeavor, associate each item with something you find easier to remember (example: the name Tony could be remembered as the guy with a toe sticking out of his knee). The book also uses sound associations for numbers in order to remember the specific order of things. With those two techniques applied to every situation, you can remember. But part of the key is - you made an honest attempt to remember it in the first place instead of just glazing over and hoping for the best. Not particularly ground breaking information! However, it did help me to some extent, so I still give it a 3 (as in "okay").
