Haruki Murakami, a writer both mystical and hip, is the West's favorite Japanese novelist. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Murakami lived abroad until 1995. That year, two disasters struck Japan: the lethal earthquake in Kobe and the deadly poison gas attacks in the Tokyo subway. Spurred by these tragic events, Murakami returned home. The stories in After the Quake are set in the months that fell between the earthquake and the subway attack, presenting a world marked by despair, hope, and a kind of human instinct for transformation. A teenage girl and a middle-aged man share a hobby of making beach bonfires; a businesswoman travels to Thailand and, quietly, confronts her own death; three friends act out a modern-day Tokyo version of Jules and Jim. There's a surreal element running through the collection in the form of unlikely frogs turning up in unlikely places. News of the earthquake hums throughout. The book opens with the dull buzz of disaster-watching: "Five straight days she spent in front of the television, staring at the crumbled banks and hospitals, whole blocks of stores in flames, severed rail lines and expressways." With language that's never self-consciously lyrical or show-offy, Murakami constructs stories as tight and beautiful as poems. There's no turning back for his people; there's only before and after the quake. --Claire Dederer
Book Description
The six stories in Haruki Murakami’s mesmerizing collection are set at the time of the catastrophic 1995 Kobe earthquake, when Japan became brutally aware of the fragility of its daily existence. But the upheavals that afflict Murakami’s characters are even deeper and more mysterious, emanating from a place where the human meets the inhuman.
An electronics salesman who has been abruptly deserted by his wife agrees to deliver an enigmatic package—and is rewarded with a glimpse of his true nature. A man who has been raised to view himself as the son of God pursues a stranger who may or may not be his human father. A mild-mannered collection agent receives a visit from a giant talking frog who enlists his help in saving Tokyo from destruction. As haunting as dreams, as potent as oracles, the stories in
After the Quake are further proof that Murakami is one of the most visionary writers at work today.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable but not as good as his novels.......2007-07-21
I must confess up front that short stories are not all that appealing to me. I prefer full length novels becasue of their ability to really develop the characters and plot. Right before reading these stories, I read "Kafka on the Shore". While these stories are not as mesmerizing, the six stories were very enjoyable and worth a read, especially for Murakami fans.
While all the stories center on individuals affected by the destructive 1995 Kobe earthquake, "Thailand", "Honey Pie" and "Super Frog Saves Tokyo" were my personal favorites.
Not great, but not bad or even not good.......2007-06-15
These stories are too short to appreciate the complexity that can be Haruki Murakami's writing. I would recommend The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, which was really great. Maybe I am wrong though, and it is always important to read different types of work by a writer. I guess I would suggest buying this book.
A delightful collection of short stories....highly enjoyable, but without complete closure. (who cares?).......2007-01-26
I enjoyed this book very much. While reading the stories I was completely engrossed in how they would end. In hindsight, I realize that a lot of the stories did not provide me with true closure, however, I enjoyed them so much that I hardly cared. Deep within each story I found a moral to take away and although they are not outwardly stated they are there nonetheless. This book was recommended from a friend as an introduction of Murakami's writing and it worked...
I would recommend this author and I will definitely be picking up more of his books.
Bed-time stories to soothe your soul.......2006-11-16
A set of stories depicting the life of people after the Kobe earthquake. But just on the surface.
I love Murakami's writing. Deep calmness and spirituality effervescing on each page of his.
Possibly the tallest among the magic-realists.......2006-05-20
Reality can have its moments or even decades of magic. Is not magic itself actually a reality? Magic is created out of people's (the viewers') observability or lack of it, expectations, pre-fixed ideas and many such components. Within reality an expert of magic-realism can identify events and trends which can be tremendously exploited to create literary magics wherein a whole nation's follies, shortcomings, emptyness, unanswered questions can be hurled back to them (provided they read it). In today's globalized economy and cultural trends a particular nation may stand for the whole of humanity. And yes, the stories in this book are relevant not only to just about anybody in the industrialized world but also to all societies craving for development in the present mould. Murakami seems to be one of those who call themselves "beatles generation", and the inspirations are often identifiable. But beyond that he a master of language and an extremely keen and sharp observer of society. He is preaching a kind of awareness, at least in a new version, which today's world must succeed to gain or things will, life will fall apart - everywhere. The elephant will vanish! Please do not depend on my interpretation, read this book, share it with others and then discuss among yourselves.

Unauthorized and unabridged, Quake Strategy Guide Unauthorized will take you through id Software's Quake blow-by-blow until the fat demon sings and the game is over. Although devoid of illustrations (except for the maps), the guide provides handy information about the world of Quake. Each level of the game is dissected and served up for your speedy conquest, complete with strategy tips for offing all the creatures and finding all the secrets (including some particularly secret secrets). The maps are good and easy to follow. The only drawback here is an anemic three-page section on deathmatch tactics.

Book Description
For Stanley, the earthquake is a heaven-sent opportunity. Just before it struck, he was ogling Sheila, a female jogger, and that's not all he'd like to do to her. Now the city lies in ruins, and Sheila lies trapped and naked in her bathtub. Can her husband make it to her before Stanley does?
Customer Reviews:
Classic Laymon.......2007-05-25
All the ingredients of a classic Richard Laymon novel, sex, gore, sex, gore, and then more sex and gore. What takes place after the big quake hits is more terrifying the the quake itself. A quick fun read for any Laymon fan.
She's Trapped In The Tub!!! Maybe I Can Have Sex With Her?.......2005-04-22
In this book the reader is introduced to Major League Geek and Momma's Boy Stanley who has rampant Hormonal Lustful Desires for his neighbour Sheila Banner. Then an Earthquake hits the Los Angeles area and Stanley's pathetic sexual fantasies may just be realized as Sheila is trapped in the bath in her house.Actually Stanley is so desperate that he is willing to have sex with any female which soon becomes apparent to the reader. In this book Laymon once again explores his tired old Themes of Teenage Lust Out Of Contol, Graphic Violence and Rape which a lot of sad, lonely individuals seem to like reading about.I give this book 5 stars because once again Laymon has enticed me to buy this book with the promise of something original so he did succeed in making me part with $15 for the usual Laymon trash masquerading as Horror.
Sick but fun!.......2005-03-03
This is not a book you want to read if you are easilly disturbed by anything. Laymon writes like a man with no conscience. I found myself shocked several times by the taboos he was willing to violate. A ton of shock value. Definately fun.
Quake with fear.......2003-04-08
Another fine offering from Richard Laymon. This time we see a family struggle after a devastating earthquake disrupts the entire city.
As with any disaster, looters and worse rear their ugly heads. But central to the fear is lonely Stanley, a former peeper who now has an opening to actually pursue his desires. After all, in the madness following the quake, who will notice some premeditated violence. His goal is the family's daughter and his drive is relentless. He knows that once the city has recovered, he will have lost his chance to pursue his perverse fantasies.
Laymon once again shows us the dark heart of people when civilizations restraints have been removed. A fine read.
Simply a must read!.......2000-01-18
Having read Laymon previously, I knew what to expect. Horror, gore, and phycotisism! Quake contained all of this, but the characters were so strong, you almost felt part of the terror. The story focusses around the Tanners, and invites you to see the devastation of the quake through their eyes, as they desperately try to to save themselves from the danger which has been unleashed by this natural disaster. Heroisism, innocence and sheer passion is dealt with superbly,(as in all Laymon books), and the plight of Stanley will keep you hooked right through, as you wait with baited breath to see if his dreams and fantasies finally do come true!Read this above all others. You won't be able to put it down.

Book Description
Meet Jim Berkland, a California geologist whose forecast of the famous October 17, 1989 World Series Quake that rumbled through the San Francisco Bay Area was right on the money. This is the first book to document a geologist's uncanny ability to foretell earthquakes around the world. This facinating read includes stories of earthquake survivors, a wealth of details about seismic activity in earthquake prone regions around the world.

Man who predicts Earthquakes - Jim Berkland, Maverick Geologist -biography
by Cal Orey, Sentient Pub '06 Review - micheal sunanda Oness press
This book is charming & dramatic in language, vast in scope, very personal & accurate in reporting. Jim keeps Equake records of his `Syzygy' coorelations being Sun, full & new moon cycles of Equake clusters happening after many cats & dogs run away from homes. That natural data been observed in China for decades, but not reported to US much. Cal explains the politics around Jim & controversy still rejected by most geology now. Jim is open, careful & lucid telling of Equakes recent & historical. Even wild animals act weird or run away before Equakes, as many folks in northern California know. But government people are too worried & afraid about money & reputation to allow such a radical rebel to work for them predicting Equakes, makes'em look dumb, even if it saves damage & lives to know ahead & prepare.
I been hearing Jim on Coast to Coast am radio interview for 5 years now, So here I get to learn the details of his radical lifework around earthquake predictions. He has more honest integrity of any geologist I've ever heard or read. His observing & reporting natures cycles really inspired me to study earth science more about all earth changes causes & effects. Even him getting fired by his agency for publishing earthquake predictions is typical as it is absurd. But he continued his career research in patterns around earthquake wherever they happen & especially the precursors, not causes, but the signs of it coming soon. His Syzygy is 80-85% accurate predicting earthquakes. Jim's been tracking solunar cycles, ocean tides & animal behaviors & more coorelations to earthquake precursors
We read of other Equake predictors, sensitives to pre-quake rumbles, prophetic dreams & ESP. I've talked with 2 Equake sensitives who feel pre-quake vibrations as aches, pains & stress in their bodies, they've mapped according to body parts & earth regions. Cal probes the depths of the field. I like her referring to Rupert Sheldrake's work on morphic resonance & ESP of animals sensing invisible & farway things. If you want a deeper read on earth-quake dimensions this is it. Reading her is fun & profound at once, to realized how we're all connected with Mother earth. But animals seem more & sensitive & instinctual than most humans are. So we can learn about patterns with them, Like `where'd they go? Why running away? Is quake coming? When? Some causes of Equakes are still a mystery.
James Berkland's Work Deserves Serious Attention!.......2006-10-09
I wrote the introduction to *The Man Who Predicts Earthquakes* because I believe that James Berkland's work on earthquake prediction deserves serious attention. Cal Orey's book provides a valuable contribution to our understanding of mysterious earthquake precursors and it offers a fascinating overview of James Berkland's colorful career as a maverick geologist. Berkland's adventures and explorations on the frontiers of scientific discovery will haunt conventional seismologists and intrigue open-minded students of unexplained phenomena.
A big thank you to Cal and Jim Berkland !.......2006-10-05
Jim is one who refuses to follow the "normal" way of doing things, and I love that. Thanks to both of you I have found many more ways to enhance my forecasts at quakeprediction dot com! Not only does Cal cover Jim's ideas in detail, but she also gives the reader a great deal of earthquake information.
The Best Is Yet To Be.......2006-09-19
I met Jim Berkland in 1998 and Cal Orey's book about him is a comprehensive look at his many years of work combined with earthquake prediction and is simply delightful. Berkland is a great humanitarian, spends much of his time in community events and wears his heart on his sleeves. Orey has brought to the readers of this book the true essence of this man we should all be proud to know. It is easy to forget that he was there for no less than 50 valid site specific predictions, he was there for us before Loma Prieta in October 1989 and Northridge in 1994. And I'm sure before the next moderate to large earthquake he'll be there once again looking out for our safety.
Kudos to author Cal Orey for her great writing. From securing great interviews, explaining the work of Jim Berkland and affording us the opportunity to know him and understand though he has fought long against a hard bitter wind, he has stood the test of time. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to come to know Jim Berkland, an extraordinary person and what earthquake prediction is about and his devotion to this effort.

Quake is the hottest thing going in computer gaming these days. In this groundbreaking action game from id Software, you must protect the earth by charging headlong into battle against hordes of angry, evil, ugly creatures. It's one of you against hundreds of them--but you get neat toys such as nailguns and rocket launchers to make the job easier (and messier).
Why is Quake so popular? For starters, Quake comes to us from the same folks who created DOOM, which hit the computer game scene four years ago--forever changing desktops and hindering productivity levels around the world. Quake is similar to DOOM, but many times better. In Quake, the 3-D worlds are far more intricate and engaging, the monsters are more realistic (well, as realistic as leaping, sharp-toothed demons can be), and fans can play the game over the Internet.
You'll find one of the largest and most committed (in more ways than one) online gaming communities. There are around-the-clock deathmatch opportunities, hundreds of custom levels, and clans of expert killers waiting to gib you into the wee hours. Whether multiplayer or single player, Quake is exciting, addictive, and consistently gruesome.
Customer Reviews:
The most exciting game ever made!.......2005-05-16
The root of everything you know about today's gaming. You better keep in mind that 2006 will be the 10th anniversary of QUAKE. So get yourself a copy of this great game.
Long on Challenge, Short on Originality.......2000-10-20
Quake is a fast-paced, first person combat game that combines an
improved Doom-style system and monsters with unimproved Doom-style
weapons and storyline.
Four "dimensions," or game
sections, each divided into five to eight levels, comprise the world
of Quake. These sections, "Dimension of the Doomed,"
"Realm of Black Magic," "Netherworld," and
"The Elder World," are dungeon-like settings infested with a
wide variety of monsters, traps, secret areas, and hazards. Players
must locate keys, typically two per level, in order to progress to the
finish. No "action" button(e.g., the space bar in most
Doom-style games) is required to open doors or push buttons; such
feature are automatically activated when the character is in
proximity. Looking and shooting in all directions, including up and
down, and swimming are some of the improvements upon the Doom-style
system.
A unique interface at the start of a new game allows a
player to select different hallways for "Easy,"
"Medium," "Hard," or "Nightmare"
difficulty levels (although the entrance to the latter is actually
hidden, so people don't wander into it accidentally). Once difficulty
level is selected, the player can enter any of the dimensions. While
it is recommended that the dimensions be played through in order, this
sort of interface essentially allows players to switch difficulty
level in between levels, if desired.
Characters start off with an
axe--decidely less dramatic than the Doom chainsaw--and a shotgun with
25 shells, and rapidly acquire an arsenal of progressively deadlier
weapons, including a double-barrelled shotgun, a "nailgun,"
a "perforator," a grenade launcher, a rocket launcher, and a
"thunderbolt," as well as ammunition, armor, and various
power-ups, such as health, protective suits, rings of invisibility,
pentagrams of protection, and a rune that temporarily quadruples your
damage, turning you into even more of a killing machine. When a new
dimension is entered, your character once again starts off with a
shotgun and 25 shells (and the stupid axe).
Monsters include
rottweilers, grunts and enforcers (basic soldier types), knights and
deathknights (heavily armored, sword-wielding fiends), rotfish (to
make the water hazards even more hazardous), zombies that won't stay
dead, scrags (sort of like flying worms), ogres (armed with chainsaws
and grenades), spawns (big ugly bouncing blobs), fiends (demonic
werewolves), vores (spidery monsters), and shamblers (huge beasts that
sling lightning). According to the manual, grunts are "goons with
probes inserted into their pleasure centers, wired up so that when
they kill someone, they get paroxysms of ecstasy." Gratefully, no
evidence for this is provided in the game.
Unfortunately, for all
that it has going for it, many aspects of Quake also suffer from a
marked unoriginality. "You get the phone call at 4 a.m. and by
5:30 you're in the secret installation," the introduction to the
game begins. Oh no, not 4 a.m.! Horrors! It then goes on to explain
how you are a top notch government agent that must keep some evil
being from opening the gates of hell and overrunning the world. Sound
familiar? It should, seeing as it is the plot for fully half the
Doom-style computer games on the market, including Doom. For a game
that clearly required many months of work to produce, it is a bit sad
that only about 20 minutes went into developing the background.
And
while the weapons are pretty neat, they are not overly
original. Essentially, you get two types of shotgun, two types of
machine gun, two types of grenade launcher, and an energy weapon. Oh,
and that damned axe, which does not even go "swish" or
"chunk." In short, a selection that does not measure up to
the weapons arrays of Doom or Strife. And some of the monsters, such
as the grunts and enforcers, seem repackaged from earlier
games.
Overall, however, Quake is a very worthwhile, challenging
game that is certain to be a hit with most people who like this style
of game. Its hackneyed elements do not really detract from play; a bit
more originality, however, might have made this game even more
enjoyable.

It was the first game to enter my dreams.......1999-06-19
(whenever I finally got around to sleeping, anyway)
It's the creepiest/scariest game of it's time. Amazing level of violence and brutality. A sureal landscape of mind-warping 3D architecture. Most fitting soundtrack for a game ever (Trent Reznor, you rule), it sets the mood beautifully. Super-intense multiplayer. Gripping and involving single-player environments.
For the thousands of hours I have put into this game, I see no loss.
IT RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-05-30
I First got Quake 2 from Gateway when we got our computer. Quake 2 was hard, it took 4 months to beat on easy.(and I'm an exper. player) When I beat it I wanted to get Quake. We just got it and it Rules. If you don't like it you've got a bad problem, see a docter.
Very Excellent.......1999-01-20
This game is a must if you like first person 3d shooter. Quake provides a wide variety of game play. The multiplayer aspect of the game makes it worth playing over and over. There are many mods (modifacations) that you can add on for extra and different game play. Team Fortress, which is by far the most popular mod, is the most fantastic multiplayer game out there that I've played. Also for those of you who are nerds, Quake II multiplayer actually shrinks the players and makes you think that the levels are actually bigger. :)

Horrible.......2007-05-13
Quake! by Gail Langer Karwoski was one of the worst books I have ever read! It is really cheesy and I would recommend it for grades 1-3 more than 4-6. I had to read this for middle school summer reading. It was so bad that I wouldn't read it by choice at any moment. I didn't want to give it 1 star because I liked a couple parts of it.
It starts off with a boy named Jacob Kauffman. The earthquake happens within the first thirty pages of the book. I would think that it should happen in the middle of the book and explain more of Jacob's life before than the disaster. Jacob finds a dog he names Quake after the earthquake, which I thought was really dumb. He finds his family at the end, they were seperated throughout the book. I didn't like it, and I would only recommend it to a 6-year-old.
Trajic in San Frasico.......2007-03-31
The plot of this story is a earthquake. When Jacob and his family are asleep the dog his Uncle Avi gave him woke them.Jacobs dad told him to give it back. When Jacob was returning the the dog the quake struck.Afterthe quake there was buildings fallen down and building blocks on the sidewalk.Fires where every where, water pipes wheredown and people where trapped under buildings. With no no water the army had to blow blow up buildings tostop the fire ,after the fire stoped ,the next day it rained.
Quake! Disaster in San Francisco, 1906.......2006-08-24
With stereotypical characters and obvious plotting, QUAKE! seems to warrant a lower score, but, in fact, this is a historical fiction novel that works well for the lower-level reader. I don't think this really belongs on the 6-8 grade Sunshine State reading list at all, but only on the 3-5 grade list.
Full of ethnic working-class characters in olde time San Francisco, QUAKE! tells the story of a boy (and his newly acquired stray dog) as he does what he can to survive and find his family after the devastating disaster of a century ago. Necessarily fast-paced to keep the interest of the younger reader, the story does rely extremely heavily on interspersing actual facts and characters of the disaster to maintain its integrity.
My 8th grade students would probaby be interested in this story more for the historical perspective than the story being told. My daughter (3rd grade) enjoyed it thoroughly.
I would give this 3.5 stars if the Amazon rating system allowed half-points.
Well done for children's fiction.......2006-07-25
I admire the author for taking such a catastrophic story and telling it in a way that children can understand and learn from. I consider myself a collector on all things "Quake '06" and this is one of my prize possessions. I highly recommend it. If you're looking for a DVD that tells the non-fiction version of the quake and fire, I'd recommend "Disaster by the Bay" also here on amazon, easily the best documentary on the subject.
Son Loved This Book!.......2005-11-01
I bought this book for my 9-year-old son, and he thought it was "awesome." He said it was one of the best books he has ever read. It truly prepared him to understand a disaster of an enormous magnitude; after he read Quake, the Pakistan earthquake hit and he understand the devastation and fear that people were experiencing. That, to me, is what the best books for kids do. They open up the world and teach them what they could not learn for themselves (such as experiencing an earthquake). Learning and loving to read at the same time - what a great combination.
He loved the book (he could not stress this enough).

Understanding Bible Prophecy for Yourself (Tim LaHaye Prophecy Library)
ASIN: 0785274723 |
Book Description
Pastor Jack Hayford believes the key to understanding the book of Revelation is to understand and correctly interpret the time and events surrounding the major earthquakes in Revelation. In
E-Quake Pastor Hayford offers a practical study of the book of Revelation, not a speculative or sensationalized look at prophecy. Readers will understand how this revelation of Jesus Christ affects their lives today. He also shows them how to live in what are perhaps the end times, how to keep things in perspective, how to make sure their value system and priorities are in order, and how to apply the teaching of Revelation in practical ways.

A thought provoking look into Revelation instead of another rant from a prophectic school of thought.......2007-01-11
This book takes you by surprise. Dr. Hayford starts by saying that the book is more a collection of sermons than his usual careful exegesis of scripture with footnotes and documentation. However this book makes more sense than all of the commentaries and rants of other authors combined. Dr. Hayford sets out to make the book of Revelation understandable as a book of worship and practical application for our lives today. Along the way he gives us insights into the real meaning and some clarity of the prophetic. Here are some nuggets to wet your appetite:
"The book of Revelation is the newspaper of tomorrow, but it is also a handbook for today. It forecasts a series of terrible and terrifying events, but at the same time it provides a perspective on the whole that affords us very practical hope" (page 7). "The book of Revelation is not a revelation of `stuff'; it is a revelation of Jesus. It is not a revelation of information; it is a revelation of Jesus. It is not a revelation of prophesies; it is a revelation of Jesus" (page 29). "The book of Revelation was not given to us as a book for speculation. It was not given as a coffee table book for the saints to sit around and talk about because it would be `fun to guess.' It was given for very pragmatic reasons: to encourage in the midst of trial, to motivate in the time of opportunity, to bring us to worship and praise before the Lord, and to realize that in the spirit of praise around His timeless throne, there is constantly an unscrolling of God's purpose in motion, which is worldwide, yet personal in its implications" (page 111).
This book may startle you by its conclusions. If you are a pre-trib dispensationalist or a Tim LaHaye fan, this book probably isn't for you. Dr. Hayford is very clear about his feelings on that approach: "The book of Revelation becomes distorted when a linear approach is taken. It is easy to become confused with this approach because the book of Revelation is not written in a linear fashion. It is a series of prophecies that are seen from different viewpoints" (page 137). "People want to turn it [the book of Revelation] into a linear progression from chapter 4 though the end of the book, but it can't be done. It can't be done without creating more questions and problems, which are strained at and worked at until we end up with something that has a certain amount of satisfaction: `Well, we've got that thing lined up.' The only problem is that anytime we think we have a prophecy lined up, we soon discover that we didn't have it as lined up as we thought. We end up speculating about everything that happens" (Page 179).
To conclude, if you want to make sense of the seals, and the trumpets, and all of the various overlapping symbols, events, and people, this book will help. If you want a neat system of theology that raptures you out of here at the first sign of trouble I recommend anything Dr. LaHaye writes instead. Blessings...
Prosperity and Caste in revelational doctrine.......2005-02-13
My rebuttals are extremely pointed, but are given with the deepest respect for the person and ministry of Pastor Jack Hayford.
Problem one: Chapter two of E Quake focuses on worship as being the key to unlocking the vision. Pastor Jack mentions the struggling churches of Revelation 2 and 3, and rightly states that worship brings our focus onto Jesus, not methods, as the answer to any weakness present among His people.
However, I disagree with the position he takes that the worshipful giving away of resources in a financially struggling congregation guarantees the overflow of God's provisional blessing. The story he tells to verify this doctrine takes place, as all such stories regarding the prosperity doctrine do, in an American church. He argues that his point is correct because it worked. Of course it "worked!" But it doesn't "work" in the other 95% of the world.
The Lord's people in struggling third-world churches are no less loved by God than prosperous American churches, and they constantly give what little they have to support the Lord's work among them. We do these brothers and sisters wrong to mistake our privilege for entitlement!
The Bible nowhere teaches that being godly insulates a person from suffering. In fact, the Bible does much to dispel that theological error. The book of Job soundly refutes such nonsense, as does Jesus Himself, Paul, James, and yes, even the book of Revelation. It isn't for nothing that God comforts His people in Revelation 7:16 by saying that in His Presence, they will never again suffer from hunger pangs, dehydration, or lack if shelter!
Poverty is not a lack of faith.
One of the most touching messages I ever heard came from a Ugandan minister who told our congregation how his people walk for several hours to come to church, wearing the one piece of clothing they own. They cry out to God in intercession for America, with tears streaming down their faces, because "American Christians are a people of little obedience." The Ugandan Christians intercede hungry much of the time, not because they are fasting, but because they don't have enough food to eat.
These Christians know want. This minister has to answer very hard questions among his people, questions like, "If Jesus loves me so much, why does my baby have no food?"
Problem two: Pastor Jack gives several illustrations from his own ministry in chapter four of E Quake. It is to one of these examples that I desire to respond. I have been exposed to this particular illustration twice: at a function Jack Hayford spoke at, and in written form in E Quake. Both times it has disturbed me greatly.
In no way do I question his sincerity or motives. I don't doubt that he is completely unaware that he speaks from an experience of privilege. Yet pain is caused by the supposition he promotes, and although it is unintentional and innocent, it hurts, nevertheless.
His example is that a mechanic is a mechanic because God created him to be one. He does it because he loves it and wouldn't want to do anything else. He wasn't made to work in an office on Wall Street. Being a mechanic is his "place" in the world.
Ouch.
People of means, that is, those who have the luxury of choosing for themselves what kind of job will let them feel fulfilled, no doubt applaud this saying. They could be engineers, bankers, or politicians at their whim; or, if it so suits their desire, mechanics. It doesn't matter. They can pursue whatever they wish. They are privileged; life has many options, none of which involves suffering.
However, there is a different reality for those who were not born white, male, and privileged. In most cases, a mechanic or a waitress, day laborer, car wash attendant, etc., does the job they do not because they find fulfillment in it, not because they wouldn't want to work in a cushy office, and not because they love to sweat, but because they never had an opportunity to do any better.
Unlike the privileged class, their parents couldn't afford to send them to college so that they could rise above blue-collar level. They are desperate single moms struggling to raise several kids on minumum wage, because dad bailed out on paying child support. They come from a background of poverty where they are toiling up from generations of hardship caused by prejudice.
Are we to believe that this hardship is their ordained "place?" Please!
People who hold down two and three minimum wage jobs simultaneously that offer no health insurance and that barely make ends meet don't do so because they love it! They have no choice.
Perhaps the mechanic Pastor Jack mentions hates his job. Perhaps he dreamed of better things, once. But lacking the "connections" that opens the doors to the better things of life, dreams give way to reality. So, he works as a mechanic to put food on the table.
This is not as far-fetched as it sounds. I know a Guatemalan pediatric nurse who, due to the red tape of licensing differences, works here in the U.S. in a deli market all day. She hates it, but it pays the bills.
Only a generation ago, the white American population believed Latino crop pickers happily chose a nomadic life. They were meant to work the fields; it was their "place." The privileged believed blacks were created with less intelligence and were made to be second-class. They were expected to remember to keep their "place." Much the same is still believed about women.
Are these people or their forbearers created to be less than their potential because they are outside of America's privileged class? Was the lady who used to be a nurse but is forced by circumstance to be a deli clerk "made" by God to be a deli clerk or a nurse? It borders on the absurd!
The descendents of slaves are now lawyers, teachers, and scientists. The children of Vietnam War "house girls" have become accomplished musicians and students since immigrating to America. A homeless woman was recently admitted to Harvard.
So what does all this say? That slaves are created to be slaves, house girls created to be prostitutes, or homeless people created to wander the streets desolate? Hardly! Yet their progeny might have suffered the same fate had not opportunity arisen.
It is just as cruel to propose that hotel maids, grocery baggers, or gas station attendants are "made" by God to be lower caste. We are Christians, not Hindus. Status and privilege are simply that.
Hayford should stick with other topics of the Bible.......2000-10-13
"A NEW Approach to Understanding the End Time Mysteries in the Book of Revelation"? That sub-title right there told me this book is false. Dr. Harry Ironside, one of America's greatest theologians of the past made this statement that certainly applies to Jack Hayford's book: "Be careful of any teaching that is new; it might not be true." There were other problems with the book as well. Jack Hayford downplays how bad the tribulation will be and makes the reader believe it's simply a bad time of persecution, rather than great calamity. The tribulation is a time to punish the ungodly and a time for God to deal with Israel again. The church will NOT be here. Stephen King couldn't put together what's really going to happen during the earth's darkest hour! Where in the world does Hayford come up with the idea that the white horse in Revelation 6 is Jesus? Jesus has already been crowned in Revelation 4 by the saints in heaven and doesn't have to work for the crowns as Hayford thinks. Didn't Hayford bother to look at the Greek words for "crown" in Revelation 6 and Revelation 19? They're two different words! "Crown" in chapter 6 is the word "stephanos" while chapter 19 is the word "diadema". Obviously, they're two different words! He also makes the rapture no big deal. Believe me, it will be a big deal! Hayford symbolizes the book of Revelation too much, a great danger to anyone studying Revelation. In short, the pre-wrath view of the rapture has seized America like a prairie fire. That's sad because it's a false theory that dates back to about 1977 or somewhere in the '70s. That's a far cry from the Pre-trib rapture that dates to the time of Christ and the Apostle Paul. Other writers have written commentaries on Revelation and they're pre-trib. Amazing how they've been preserved all these years! What makes this generation anymore special than past generations? Past generations spent much more time in the Bible. Today's generation is dumb compared to scholars up to 100 years ago. As my review title says, Hayford should stick with other topics in the Bible, ones he's better at. His view of Revelation is in serious error and is a far cry from "the blessed hope" in Titus 2:13.
Hayford does it again!.......2000-05-21
Once again, Jack Hayford brings the Ancient Word to life for the modern reader. E Quake is a straightforward presentation of the Book of Revelation: not a verse by verse commentary, nor an emotionaly charged devotional. Hayford gives an honest appraisal of the what and why of Revelation, along with presenting the idea that Revelation is not so much about a future doomsday, but about present opportunities to give worship and do warfare in the name of Jesus Christ, who is coming in glory.
A Great Introduction to the Book of Revelations.......2000-02-28
Although this book is not very long, Jack Hayford does an excellent job of introducing readers to the Book of Revelation. Of all the books in the new testament, I have always found Revelations the most difficult to understand. I am glad that Pastor Jack Hayford has finally written a book that gives definitive insight into some of the symbols, terms, and messages contained in the text.
Luckily for the reader, he does not try and explain every single verse in Revelations. So, if you are looking for an extremely detailed explanation of Revelations- don't buy this book.
Instead Pastor Hayford tries to give the reader a basic understanding of why Revelation was written, how the book is structured (something that I definitely misunderstood until I read this book), and what it means to us today. The one great lesson that became crystal clear to me after reading this book, is the importance of worshipping God in a Christian's life. Many Christians, myself included, underestimate the power and importance of worship in their Christian walk. Just like prayer, it a fundamental discipline that can make a world of difference in your life, and the life of the Church.
Just like one of the previous reviewers mentions, I hope Pastor Hayford does another follow-up book about Revelations. Now that I have a fundamental understanding of the book, I would like to dig a little deeper, and gain even greater insight.
I recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with trying to understand the Book of Revelations. If you are looking for an excellent source to give you a basic understanding of Revelations, look no further. Get a copy of this book and add it to your Christian library.
