Book Description
This is the tenth anniversary edition of the classic best seller for women seeking their sacred connections. Long ago before the patriarchal period, in many places on Earth, the Goddess was worshipped. Circle of Stones draws us into a meditative experience of the lost Feminine and creates a space for us to consider our present lives from the eyes of women's ancient culture and ritual. Incorporating the most ancient symbol of spirituality — the circle of stones — Duerk weaves stories, dreams, and visions of women to lead each reader into a personal yet archetypal journey, posing the reflective question, "How might your life have been different if . . . ?"

Circle of Stones, Woman's Journey to Herself.......2005-05-02
I can't tell you how this book touched my spirit. "How might (my) life have been different," if I had read this book when I was young and not 52 years. Better yet, how different it might have been if my own mother had read this book, or one like it, when I was young! I have recommended it to every woman who will listen, regardless of age. It is an oh, so gentle, yet oh, so powerful call to reconnect with ourselves and other women for common experience. It is NOT a man bashing book, quite the contrary, it merely calls for natural balance to be restored in our world. If you are a single father of a daughter, I recommend you read this book as a way of guiding your child...read it while she is young for future reference guidance. Mother's, it is not too late for you to learn from this book, and for you to guide your own daughters with it's wisdom.
Ideal for individual reflection.......2004-11-12
Now in a superbly presented fifteenth anniversary edition, Circle Of Stones is a classic spiritual guide for women featuring meditative experiences drawn from ancient cultures and rituals. Vignettes narrating the life journeys and searches of individual women guide the reader into personal reflection. Ideal for individual reflection or for reading aloud among women's circles, this moving vision of past, present, and future for women promotes awareness and understanding of female responsibilities, powers, and dreams. Woman, with a candle lighted/to help her keep faith with her own life.../a centered presence/spreading in concentric circles around her.
Circle of Stones.......2004-03-24
This book is an excellant one to use for women's indepth retreats.
It aids in healing our negative memories. The group would focus on how to expand their horizons, challenge their mind, inspire their spirit while nourishing the soul. It is a good book for a multi-generational women's group. This book helps us to find the path to healing.
A must have for every woman!.......2002-09-12
This book reads like poetry. It is deeply lyrical and has a flow to it like a dreamy, winding stream of music. It draws you in then goes inside of you, affecting your heart and ultimately your soul. There are moments of tears, moments of smiles and moments when you will say, "Ah, I understand that." You simply can't read this book and leave without being changed by it.

Book Description
Here, archaeologically documented,is the story of the religion of the Goddess. Under her, women’s roles were far more prominent than in patriarchal Judeo-Christian cultures. Stone describes this ancient system and, with its disintegration, the decline in women’s status. Index; maps and illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Everyone shoud read this book. .......2007-08-26
I just finished "When God was a Woman" today. I generally have a hard time with non-fiction and it can take me months to get through one book. I read this book from cover to cover in less than a week. It does bog down in a few places, but the theories being discussed are pretty mind boggling. I support the author's decision to pack in as much evidence as she does.
This book makes the following claims (supported by archaeological evidence):
*the bible was not created in a vacuum: it was written by men as a response to the world they found themselves living in at the time.
*the subjugation of women in the bible had a definite purpose: to lessen the political and economic power women had 3000ish years ago.
*the story of Adam and Eve was specifically contrived to attack the existing Goddess religion. The serpent, the tree of knowledge, the fig leaf clothing, and the successful tempting of Eve were all aimed at commonly recognized aspects of that earlier religion.
Writing today and referring to the Web, or the GOP or Oprah may not be understood even 500 years from now, let alone 3000. The biggest plus of "When God was a Woman" (in my opinion) is that the author places the bible in context of the historical period in which it was written.
Understand, I am not particularly religious. But I know I live in a society that is based on Judeo-Christian morality. I live in one nation under God. I would swear on a bible in a court of law. I have a religious president. And women are not yet considered equal to men.
No, I don't want to go back to a Goddess religion. Humans had at least 7000 years of it, with at least some documented subjugation of men (killing of the king/queen's consort when he loses his potency, or his reverence to Her.) And now we have had at least 3000 years of God the Father religion that claims women must be controlled by men. Isn't it time we advanced?
This Book Is Tripe.......2007-06-22
Stones reliance upon disproved theories and twisted evidence as well as less than stellar, biased, references is a great disappointment as I am truly interested in discovering what few matriarchal societies exist and or existed throughout human history.
Stone does a disservice to her cause by manipulating truth to fit her agenda.
The loser is the uninformed reader who may actually believe there is truth top be found here.
Not a cliched religious experience..............2007-05-08
Although she does seem to have a tendency to go off on a tangent, for me, this book confirms what I've known and felt for years - underrepresented in most organized religions and totally out-of-place in Christianity, period. After reading this book, I think I'm ready to 'come out' and tell family and friends what I've known for several years - I'm Pagan as the day is long and secure in my beliefs and religion!
This is a BLISTERING critique of the Levite Priesthood.......2007-02-28
A better title of this book would read: "Before the Bible, God was a Woman." While I have a slight problem with this authors title of her work matching up her actual subject matter, never have I read anything so well describing the problems I have always had with the Judeo-Christian Bible.
While there were undisputed Indo-European invasions into southern lands for thousands of years, their influence on the conquered peoples' religions is not as easy to determine. Indeed, how can we really know how thought changed between 6000-4000 years ago in the ancient Middle and Near East? Marilyn Stone certainly has her very plausible theories about the consequences of these invasions. While this part of the book is enlightening it isn't as blistering a critique as later in the book. At least the Goddess, and women in general, retained some status and legal rights in cultures around Israeli occupied Canaan.
Once Ms Stone sets her sights on the biblical account of creation and of the subjugation of Canaan, she doesn't hold back. The amount of barbarous acts that the Bible documents against the native Canaanites is amazing. Read Joshua and Kings I and II if you don't believe Ms Stone. Why did this genocide take place? For the simple reason that the native people didn't believe in the "real" God. I felt no man-bashing, as some other reviewers read in her book. I only took away religious extremism at its worst, and women and the Goddess were the victims of this "young upstart" religion of only about 3000 years old called Judaism. This isn't Ms Stone making these numbers up, many biblical scholars believe the Pentateuch was only written between 1200 to 1000 BC.
The absolutely most interesting part of Ms Stones work was the deconstruction of the Genesis creation story. She cites not only how each and every event was carefully constructed to denounce the Goddess religion, and make its practitioners sin against God by every major rite of the old religion, but to also condemn women for all of history afterward to be men's "helpers."
If you ever wondered what bothered you about Patriarchial religion, this book captures the epitome of monotheisms' dark side.
****.......2006-04-05
There are a few errors historically speaking but the overall book is informative and insightful. P.S. Also, it's not for one moment just another 'feminist rant'. It's a scholarly piece of work.

Theatre Teachers: This Is What You Need.......2006-11-10
This book is formatted so easily, it took me MUCH less time than I thought it would to prepare a unit on reader's theatre for my class. I used it for my high school theatre class so they wouldn't have to concentrate on large vocabularies, but rather to deliver the story in a simple, easy way. It was a HUGE success of a project and this book made it possible. It tells you how long each story is, what cast you'll need, and what reading level it is!! Yay!!!
The stories themselves are entertaining (even for high school!!!), compelling, and really fun to work with. I am SO grateful I ordered this!
A Great Resource.......2006-01-11
Aaron Shepard is a generous contributor to the field of Reader's Theatre. This book is no exception. It's well-laid out and chock-full of interesting scripts. I've recommended to several folks interested in RT.
Clear and Helpful.......2006-01-11
This book was written in clear language. It was helpful to me as a novice.

Book Description
Famed therapists Hal and Sidra Stone show readers how to turn their relationships into true "joint ventures" - ones in which partners balance their need for relationship with their need for individuality, relinquish judgment and criticism, improve their decision-making and communication abilities, celebrate their sensuality and sexuality, and include children in their lives without sacrificing their own relationship. The Stones' greatest contribution has been revealing the many selves that make up our personalities. In this book, they show how those selves impact our relationships, and they offer both general concepts and specific tips that will help couples of all kinds succeed.
Customer Reviews:
a great book that can start you use as you read.......2007-08-15
This is a book on how to make relationships work, in a practical and spiritual sense. It helps to understand how the dynamics work within a relation. It is good as it has direct applicability; you can start to use its teachings as you read.
Partnering.......2006-07-31
A very good book for couples. Focuses on "win win". good information. Helps put relationships back on track.
Giving Your Relationship a Clean Start, Instead of a Clean Break.......2006-07-29
I'm working through PARTNERING, and it's awesome.
Hal & Sidra Stone's main premises are:
1. An individual is made up of several selves... primary selves and discarded selves.
2. We attract into our lives people who 'carry' our discarded selves.
3. We manifest different selves depending on context, and what self our partner is presenting to us.
4. These selves interact differently with each other.
5. Being aware of which self is communicating (in both you and your partner) clears the way for compassionate and unloaded commuication and loving.
6. Being presented with your discarded selves is a gift to allow you to reclaim them, and operate from a place they call 'the aware ego'.
7. Integrating these selves gives you balance, and allows harmonious relationship.
I wrote 'S' a long email last night, trying to offer her a glimpse of the turmoil within me. Parts of me reallllly love her and want her. Other 'selves' within me are irritated with her, angry with her.
I wanted her to see that this is NOT a simple, cut-and-dried case of 'we're not a good match'. Cos we ARE a good match. We've got powerful stuff to teach each other and learn from each other.
It's weird. I'm about a quarter of the way through the book, and it's like a weight has been lifted off me. I've been trying to be perfect for 'S'. And I've kind of expected and demanded that she be perfect for me.
Now, I'm sitting here feeling grateful to her for showing me the parts of myself that I need to get back in touch with. Cos those discarded selves she 'carries' are the bits I threw away through co-dependence and abuse as a child.
If you want to start cleaning up your relationship, I seriously recommend that you get this book.
Empower yourself, your relationships, the world!.......2005-01-14
I have studied and used the concepts developed by the Stones and described in "Partnering" for several years. If I had been taught these skills in my youth I may not have married my ex-wife, if we had still married I think we would still be married, and if the divorce still occurred it would have been a far healthier process. These concepts and tools are making a fundamental shift in my relationships and in my growth as a person. I will be using this model of self-understanding and relationships for the remainder of my life.
These concepts also provide tools for truly valuing diversity, putting yourself in the other persons shoes, and giving the space for others to be all that that they can be. These principles have profound leadership implications.
Amazing!.......2003-02-23
After looking at several different relationship books and finding only the "same old thing", I was in awe when I picked up this one. I'm going through a divorce and this book really helped me to understand what went wrong in our relationship and what I need to pay attention to in my next relationship.
It has completely changed my outlook on relationships and makes me think about and understand my reactions to people and events within my previous relationships. I can not give this book enough praise! Thank you Hal & Sidra!!!!

Sketchy, shallow.......2005-04-18
The section that I like best in this book is the interview with Ann Richards. The other anecdotes and advice I found to be superficial, glib, and trite.
A few selections:
"Let's face it. Breaking up with someone you care for is never easy."
". . . be careful when you're dating. Take time to get to know another person."
". . . do an little analysis before attending an activity. Make sure it is one that interests you, not just one where you'll meet someone."
It's not bad advice, and probably not a bad first book for someone who is alone for the first time. But someone aching from a divorce or death might need something more compassionate, deeply-felt, and thoroughly researched.
A Primer for Newly Single Women.......2002-09-15
Author Pamela Stone cleverly has identified a huge and defined population which traditionally has been invisible: Middle-aged women who have been forced to build new lives alone as a result of widowhood or divorce.
The book is well-conceived, well-organized and well-researched, chock full of statistical detail. To reinforce the points she is making, Stone interviews experts such as psychologists, as well as famous people who are conspicuous in their singleness, like comedienne (and widow)Joan Rivers.
The author illustrates these points with anecdotal reports. The lively writing and the constructive suggestions make A WOMAN'S GUIDE TO LIVING ALONE nothing less than a primer for millions of women who find themselves single again in mid-life.
Wise, poignant and funny!.......2002-03-22
This is a book that shows women how to solve the problems we face when we live alone. I recommend it for any woman who is divorced, widowed, raising kids by herself, looking for a job or trying to balance a budget.
The writer interviews women such as former Texas governor Ann Richards and actress Joan Rivers -- she also get the stories of regular women, grandmas, soccer moms, artists, etc. Through their stories the reader comes to have hope for the future as she discovers the freedom and exhilaration of being on her own. I read this and passed it to my mother.
User-friendly.......2001-07-09
A user-friendly book spiced up with quotations and real-life profiles, this handy guide for women on surviving the grief of both divorce and widowhood fills a real need. I particularly enjoyed the last chapter with its inspirational stories of some "grand dames" who embody the word "survivor."
A Guide for Every Woman.......2001-03-15
Pamela Stone has skillfully woven the stories of women rebuilding their lives into a pattern for anyone. Any woman who finds herself alone, widowed, or divorced, will find comfort and sound advice in this book. Everything is covered, from handling grief to dating and financial management. I highly recommend this book to all women, alone or not. The information is invaluable, and one never knows when it could be used.

Book Description
A landmark work of women's history originally published in 1967, Gerda Lerner's best-selling biography of Sarah and Angelina Grimke explores the lives and ideas of the only southern women to become antislavery agents in the North and pioneers for women's rights. This revised and expanded edition includes two new primary documents and an additional essay by Lerner. In a revised introduction Lerner reinterprets her own work nearly forty years later and gives new recognition to the major significance of Sarah Grimke's feminist writings.

Recommended read.......1999-12-30
I read an earlier (1970-something?) publication of this work, and really enjoyed it. The sisters were presented as powerful thinkers who struggled with the issues of their day. The title is right on, they were pioneers for women's rights, as well as influential abolitionists. I'm glad that they were presented as whole people, with doubts and questions and problems, too.
It was an easy ready, but I didn't feel like the author was talking down to me. The book is highly recommended.

Book Description
Each year, when the weather in Istanbul becomes unbearable, the family of Iskender Pasha, a re-tired Ottoman notable, retires to its summer palace overlooking the Sea of Marmara. It is 1899 and the last great Islamic empire is in serious trouble. A former tutor poses a question which the family has been refusing to confront for almost a century: 'Your Ottoman Empire is like a drunken prostitute, neither knowing nor caring who will take her next. Do I exaggerate, Memed?' The history of Iskender Pasha's family mirrors the growing degeneration of the Empire they have served for the last five hundred years. This passionate story of masters and servants, school-teachers and painters, is marked by jealousies, vendettas and, with the decay of the Empire, a new generation which is deeply hostile to the half-truths and myths of the 'golden days.' The Stone Woman is the third novel of Tariq Ali's 'Islam Quartet'. Like its predecessorsShadows of the Pomegranate Tree and The Book of Saladinits power lies both in the story-telling and the challenge it poses to stereotyped images of life under Islam.
Customer Reviews:
So very well written.......2007-02-19
Tariq Ali is a master of setting the character as a recognizable human with depth, worries, complexity, hopes and resourcefulness. And always with Ali there is at least one character of resolution and will power who is ttempting to change direction of their life, this time away from the path laid out by the Ottoman Empire and its traditions, culture, and political narrow-mindedness. The characters are so well drawn and realistic one from the very beginning is involved.
This story is set at the very end of the 1800's when the Ottomans and the rest of the world is heading towards the first world war. The strength of the story this time is a woman who is reevaluating her life; the forces of the old ways are crashing on the shores of the new times: Old men hold onto old way honor and tradition, while their sons plot rebellion and revolution and the future; women and families and values are caught in the riptide. Some of this is revealed in confessions the characters make in private in the forest to a giant stone that has a face resembling a woman, The Stone Woman.
Interesting people, interesting times with real and believable characters and situations in a fascinating time of a dying empire. And all of it so very well written.
Emotional, lyrical prose.......2002-04-12
The Stone Woman is the third book of writer and filmmaker Tariq Ali's "Islam Quintet". Emotional, lyrical prose is the hallmark of this superbly crafted novel, which presents daily life under Islam as well as conflict and challenges. Also highly recommended are Tariq Ali's previous books in the "Islam Quintet", Shadows Of The Pomegranate Tree (0860916766, ...) and The Book Of Saladin (1859842313, ...).
Seductively Enchanting.......2001-01-29
A friend recommended this book, and i am so pleased that she did. What a novel i am absolutely swayed by it. Stone Woman my first of Tariq Ali, but certainly not the last. I read with initial resistance, but was lured to it from the first page. Mystically he draws the attention with the words which encapsulates the reader as a silent observer witnessing the developments in the palace of Pasha. One is drawn away from present times and transcends to the era of Ottomon empire's decadence.
I found the characters in this narration to have immense depth, which is delieved in part by confessions. Confessions are made to a small rock resembling a pagan goddess. Secrets are divulged to the goddess which sheds a light on the mental and emotional state of the character. Another luring aspect of this novel are the discussions by the characters. Rational, religion, philosophy and the creation of the future republic to be carved from Ottomon Empire are debated.
The narration has an expanse of seduction, rebellion, confessions, betrayal, rational, arguments, religion, treachery and conspiracy. It is to these reasons i find the text rich in prose.
Unpeel the onion: An Ottoman Family History.......2001-01-12
The Stone Woman is an exquisite microcosm of life in a decayed empire. Tariq Ali's most recent segment of his Islamic Quartet is the best so far. The novel reads like an epic poem, but with all the drama and intrigue you would expect from a Latin American soap opera. The rich tapestry of one wealthy Ottoman family's story unravels through the clandestine reports made to a pagan statue near the summer residence of an exiled forbearer. The interconnecting details are told through a headstrong daughter who has returned home after a long absence. Ali's gifts are especially evident as he slowly unpeels the layers of this family's compelling and often-cursed history. Meanwhile, Ali wraps in the politics surrounding the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the so-called "Sick Man of Europe," on the eve of the Great War. The sometimes tedious subplot about the proto-revolutionary movement in the Empire is the novel's only weak point. As a student of Ottoman history, I found it interesting, but it takes away from the true brilliance of the novel. For fans of Ali's other two works on the often violent but always spellbinding confrontation between Christianity and Islam, this book will be a godsend. It is quite similar to Ali's first book in the series, Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree, in that it focuses on the life and times of patrician family. But this work deepens the focus on family and creates a vast array of memorable and believable characters where Pomegranate had only a few broadly drawn archetypes.
A SENSUOUS DELIGHT.......2000-10-20
I went to the author's reading at Cody's bookshop in Berkelysome weeks ago. I had no knowledge of his work prior to this event. Heread well (was he ever an actor?) which encouraged me to buy thebook. I am a Muslim woman and I thought it was brave of a male authorto make his narrator a 24-year-old woman, but he succeeds verywell. One bit I found harrowing and that was Salman's life-story astold to The Stone Woman. Could Mariam have been so evil? I finishedthe book a week ago, but its images still haunt me. When I'verecovered from The Stone Woman I intend to read his other novels

Flesh and Stone.......2007-09-04
Connor Rihyad has infiltrated a congregation of villainous gargoyles where Mara Kincaide and several other women are being held against their will. The women are being used as broodmares to create an evil Les Gargouillen army.
Mara has gotten herself trapped in a house full of strange creatures. Discovering that Connor is one of them is a shock, but she is determined to save the women. Together, Connor and Mara fight to save themselves and all of the Les Gargouillen from a foe they thought long gone.
If you've read Carved In Stone you'll find the beginning of Flesh And Stone shocking and explosive. I recommend reading Carved in Stone first to get a better understanding of the plot and a more satisfying read out of this story. Flesh And Stone has a dark edge. It's thrilling and exciting. Connor and Mara make a great team. They are passionate, strong and courageous. The third story in this magical saga promises even more drama and danger. I'm anxious to read it next!

An easy read, not a lot of depth!.......2007-06-01
I read the first book in this series, Carved in Stone, and I must say it was a better book. This book didn't have a lot of depth to it. The love story was lacking, the characters didn't have a lot of pizzaz, but this is a fast and easy read and fairly entertaining. I will buy the next book, because I have looked forward to finding Rachel's brother, Levi.
Not sure why there was any bad reviews.......2007-02-26
I really enjoyed this book. There was a great plot, whereas so many romances have none at all. Conner has infiltrated a rogue gargoyle camp when he meets up with Mara, a human woman that is also purposely there to find answers of her own. Mara is definately an admirable character with her own skeletons in her closet that she was strong enough to overcome. She and Conner make an amazing pair.
Something else I liked about this book is that many times authors try to recapture the same story as the first book, especially if it was successful, but basically repeating the story with different characters. Taylor, instead has an altogether new story with new characters. The only thing in common is Conner is from the gargoyle community.
I found the story fast pace and fun to read. I look forward to more from this series, which we will get when we finally meet Levi, the younger brother from the first in the series.
Gargoyles Rule.......2006-08-03
The cover grabbed my attention; however, the first chapter held me captive until I finished the book with an "Aahhhh." Conner Rihyad came across as the intelligent, loyal stud committed to protect the children of his congregation. His newly found ally, Mara Kincaide is equally committed to finding and saving her friend. Female slavery, violence, and evil zeal for human domination push their steadfast commitment to the edge. Commitments that slowly merge into a sizzling commitment to each other. Taylor kept me on the edge and hooked to point I just order the previous book to learn more.
Anticipated 2nd story.......2006-02-14
I bought this book with great anticipation as I had loved Vickie Taylor's first book in this series Carved in Stone. I must say that I was somewhat disappointed. I loved the first book and had found those main characters very strong and fascinating. I was left empty with the main characters of this second book. I just never felt any real spark between them. They both had good strong unique personalities but there was nothing to bring them together. It was almost like they lived in a parallel universe. It was nice to have the characters from the first novel have a strong part in this book and I look forward to the next story about Levi.

Forever changed .......2004-09-29
If you want to trasform or develop a stronger prayer life, this book is for you. This book took me to the next level of praying. I love how the prayers are full of the Word of God and they are short and to the point. Some of the issues they have a prayer for include being a godly wife, procrasitination, healthy eating habits, time management, finances, etc.

Customer Reviews:
The Stone of Light: The Wise Woman - Mediocre reading.......2002-04-06
For the Egyptophile, The Stone of Light: The Wise Woman is a disappointment and is lackluster in comparision to other volumes. The story line focuses mainly on the sacred Stone of Light, the forbidden village & the Brotherhood. These craftsmen & artists create the great monuments of ancient Egypt. This in itself could be a fascinating story, but it doesn't pan out.
The Wise Woman is one of the central figures, however, there is little emphasis put on her in the book as well. At best it could have been good reading but was uneventful.
Fine.......2001-11-09
This is one of the best fictions I have ever read. The author of this book, Christian Jacq, is famous because of the great fction that he wrote about Ramses the second. This time's story occur at the late Ramses period. There is a Stone of Light which is hide in the worker's village in Deir-el Medina. Many people think that the stone is very valueable and try to steal it. This story tells about hoe the workers protect the stone. If you are interested, go and get it fast! You will enjoy it very much!
The Stone of Light: The Wise Woman.......2001-01-17
I have just finished this terrific book. Where is the next one? Again, Christian Jacq has bought to life Nefer, Ubekhet, Paneb, Mehy & the others. It is exciting watching Paneb develope into the man he has. Ubekhet is so gentle, but very, very strong, seeing her character evolve is wonderful, & Nefer, the silent one, leading the others to great heights. Thank you Christian Jacq for sharing this wonderful world of Egypt with us. Please continue writing & sharing this great ancient nation.
my review.......2000-11-10
In this sequel, Ramses has died and he has been replaced by his son, Meneptah. After some uncertainty as to the future of the Place of Truth, work starts on the new tomb and palace for the new Pharaoh.
However, the same evil persons who have tried to bring down the Place of Truth are still hard at work. Some are even rising in the politic structure of the country.
In this sequel, the author has kept the same interesting characters and adding some new ones. The writing is very well done and keeps the reader interested and at the same time informed of how living and tradition were kept in those times.
The interest born with the first book is rekindled in this second book, and I am looking forward to the third!
Egyptian Historical Soap Opera !.......2000-10-18
I did the audiobook of this and loved it, just as I loved the first one; Nefer The Silent. It "feels" like I'm really involved in actual lives and events in this period of history. Death, betrayal, majestic works, plots and counter-plots, enemies on the borders..oooohhh you got to love this. The names get to you after a while. Nefer The Silent, Paneb The Ardent, Gau The Nose, etc. Mix in the period historical lessons along with the detailed descriptions and events of daily lives and the magnificent scope of the story and this is one barn-burner of a novel. The time flew by when I was driving and I can't wait for the next one to see what happens to this large cast of characters.
