5 out of 5 stars Classroom Assesssment Review.......2006-08-07

Excellent book! Angelo was very clear and concise in guiding teachers through the assessment process.

5 out of 5 stars CATs for the classroom.......2005-08-14

The text was used in a course through UW Stout and it is a very good resource for methods that can be used to assess learners progress towards a goal. Great tool to have on the bookshelf!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2004-08-03

Cross and Angelo is a classic text that all professors should have in their teaching and learning library. The techniques are concrete, simple, and powerful. This is not a theory book but truly a handbook of techniques that will not only improve your teaching but more importantly improve your students' learning.

4 out of 5 stars Sourcebook Of Best Teaching Techniques.......2002-07-24

Although the title is certainly somewhat misleading, this is a good sourcebook of the best teaching techniques culled from a wide range of instructional situations. There is something here for everyone in every situation, elementary ed, high school, community college, and yes, those of us at universities too.

I can't imagine many educators who will not find something to improve their teaching effectiveness in this book. A great advantage is that each technique is presented individually so that you can literally pick and choose and then try them out without having to read extensively to understand the potential for each.

If you teach (this is my 25th year teaching college), I recommend two books once you have spent a few years at it and want to continue to improve your effectiveness....this one and Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman's "Six Easy Pieces"

4 out of 5 stars Both more and less than I expected.......2001-10-18

The rating of 4 stars I'm giving this is a combination of 3 stars and 5 stars. Some of the techniques presented are worth the 5 stars; the lack of actual forms or examples as administered is the 3 stars. There are many examples of each technique, but all are given as narrative descriptions, not as copies of the assessment form or handout.

One thing potential buyers should be aware of: THIS IS NOT A BOOK ABOUT GIVING TESTS. If you are looking for how to write tests, how to test your students, how to design exams, try James Popham or something similar. This is a book full of ways to survey your students to determine whether they are ready to learn, whether they are ready to absorb more information, whether they are understanding the material - but not tests.

Let me give you examples of the techniques I found immediately useful:
Technique #1: Background Knowledge Probe. This is to be given at the first class meeting, to see whether your students know what they're supposed to before they start your class. Here's how I administered it: I teach a course called "Quantitative Applications Software." It's mainly about using Microsoft Excel and related spreadsheets, and it's primarily for business majors to fill their core computer requirement. I prepared a survey form which had about 20 questions in all, with three columns to check off: "Know how to do this" (have studies it, remember it, can calculate it), "Have heard of this" (the concept is familiar but I don't remember how to figure it) and "Not familiar with this." The items to rate were divided into 3 categories: math knowledge (Square roots, exponents, order of operations); business concepts (compound interest, present value, mortgages, multi-state sales taxes) and Excel concepts - which is what the students would be learning, but some already know (built-in statistical functions, calculating loan payments, setting up invoicing systems, working with multiple files.) The students filled out this survey anonymously, so no one had to be embarrassed, and then after scanning the surveys, I announced that people who were unsure of the math concepts could get tutoring, people who knew all the Excel concepts might be able to test out of the course, and for everybody else, I would have an idea of how much time to spend explaining background math before introducing an Excel function.

Technique #25: Student-generated test questions. Students have to generate both questions and answers. This allows you to see what they think is the most important material they've studied so far, whether they've done only the homework or also studied handouts and their lecture notes, and whether they can organize their thinking. This one should be done only after you've already given the students at least one exam or a few quizzes, so that they know the length and difficulty of questions you expect.

On the other hand, many of the techniques are not very useful for my subject area - some are writing-intensive and don't fit in with a course that is mostly hands-on lab work; some require students to list pros and cons of something - not necessarily feasible in a course where there's a fixed minimum of material that MUST be covered, whether the students like it or not. More useful, I suspect, for classes where there are issues and current events and discussions, than for computer science basics.

Lumberjacks, pirates, and Chuck Norris all agree that there is but one arbiter of manliness, and he has but one name: Maddox. The longtime proprietor of the absurdly popular website, The Best Page in the Universe, Maddox has thoughtfully collected his vast masculine wisdom for the first time in a useful reference work, The Alphabet of Manliness. Since men of course communicate with others only under duress, this book may be the sole resource for those starved for answers about basic manly subjects such as urinal etiquette, road rage, and beef jerky.

We thought that Neil Strauss, who chronicled his own transformation from "half a man" to a "Master Pickup Artist" in the one-of-a-kind bestseller, The Game, might be the perfect expert to assess Maddox's guide, and indeed, he came through with the sharpest take we've yet seen on the book, which you can read below.

Guest Reviewer: Neil Strauss

Over the past decade, Neil Strauss, former pop music critic for The New York Times, has established himself as the go-to guy for diarists of decadence, collaborating with rockers Marilyn Manson, Mötley Crüe (on the instant trash classic, The Dirt), and Dave Navarro, as well as porn star Jenna Jameson, on a series of witty and frank tales of celebrity excess. And then he stepped out on his own with one of our top-selling books of 2005, The Game, his bizarre, hilarious, and surprisingly uplifting memoir of joining a secret society of "Master Pickup Artists." Keep your eye out: he has many more smart and shocking projects on the way.

I am fully convinced after reading the entire A-Z of The Alphabet of Manliness that the author of its 26 essays, Maddox, is a nerd. And not just because he correctly alphabetizes the entries, but because he can recite the names of every Castlevania game, talks about hacking and IP addresses and various mathematical theorems, and has just spent way too much time analyzing in minute detail every aspect of the penis, its functions, and its influence on the male brain. However, Maddox's lack of bulging biceps may actually be a positive thing. Because having him become the symbol and policy-maker of all things alpha male just may be one of the most subversive byproducts of the Internet since file-sharing.

If you are new to the world of Maddox and unfamiliar with his website www.thebestpageintheuniverse.com, here's how you will react to the book: When you read the dedication--"to the love of my life, my soul mate, and the greatest person in the world: me"--you will think for a moment that you have encountered one of the most unlikable narcissists in the world. When he calls a woman a "bitch" on page 2, you may actually begin to hate him. But if you stick with it, by the time you get to the middle of the book and are fully immersed in his over-active, over-systematic, testosterone-addled imagination, you will begin to realize that Maddox just may be the Andy Kaufman of his time, in possession of the driest wit you've ever encountered. The middle of the book also happens to be the home of Maddox's finest essays. In his contribution to the geek canon of Chuck Norris worship, he spuriously notes that Norris uses hippies as firewood, intercepts letters to Santa Claus to use as toilet paper, and eats "bread, cheese, some tomato paste and a handful of basil, which sounds like pizza, but it's not because Chuck Norris doesn't want to give the Italians the credit."

In general, there are two types of humor in this book: things that are funny because they're wrong ("a pirate's semen is indestructible") and things that are funny because they're right (his entire essay on urinal etiquette).

By the time you get to his views on the quickie, in which he describes a sexual encounter with his girlfriend that involves her never showing up and him passing out drunk and getting robbed, you may be bookmarking his website. And by the time you turn to the last page, you'll be flipping back to the first, reading it again and looking for the jokes you missed because you were too busy being shocked, offended, and slightly titillated. In short, The Alphabet of Manliness just may be one of the smartest paeans to stupidity ever written. --Neil Strauss

What's more manly than crushing a can against your eye, Maddox-style? Mastered that advanced skill? Move on to Maddox's short quiz below, prepared exclusively for Amazon.com, and find out whether you might be one of the new breed of men, the "hetrosexual."

Straight Is the New Gay

by Maddox

In a world where metrosexuals--stylish, well-groomed, and sharply dressed men--have taken the center stage in defining the new masculinity, small pockets of men are starting to emerge, rebelling against the status quo. This new breed of man has rejected a lifestyle of wine tasting, pedicures, and excessive cultural awareness (i.e., any cultural awareness). This newly born response to metrosexuality is gaining momentum like never before, calling back to a day when men proudly wore plaid, ate liver and onions, and smelled like motor oil by choice. This modern man has come to be known simply as: the hetrosexual.

Hetrosexual men aren't afraid embrace their masculinity. They eat, drink, and sleep like real men: fully engorged. There's no such thing as a "fashion faux-pas" in the world of hetrosexuality. In fact, even the use of the phrase "faux-pas" draws the ire of the hetrosexual man in the form of beatings and social isolation (preferably both). These are men who refuse to be pigeonholed into the constraints of sexual ambiguity, and gladly welcome every opportunity to crotch-wrestle a hot babe. Hetrosexuals are making it cool to be straight again; straight is the new gay.

Think you might be a hetrosexual? Take the following quiz to find out:

1. How much should you tip a hairstylist?
A) 10%
B) 15%
C) 20%
If you answered, you're wrong. Hetrosexuals don't go to hair stylists.

2. Cologne?
A) Yes
B) No
The correct answer is B) No. Acceptable fragrances for men are: sweat, grease, rum, or some combination thereof.

3. Which language do you speak?
A) French
B) English
C) Both
D) Neither
The answer is B) English. French is the language of love, and men don't love anything. At best, there are varying degrees of "like," and even then, men don't like anything that much.

4. When dining at restaurant, you should
A) Push aside your friends and wrestle over the best seat
B) Wait until the maitre d' seats you
C) What's a maitre d'?
The correct answer is A and C. A, because if you don't secure the best spot at the table, you may find yourself in the position of having to engage in small talk with your guest. And C, because of the answer to question 3 above.

If you answered all of the questions correctly, congratulations: you are the winner. The important thing to keep in mind is that you are a man (unless you are not), and nobody can take that away from you.

Book Description

From the publisher:

This is the only sentence in the entire book that will give you a chance to adjust your face; take your time, because it's about to be rocked off—permanently.

Finally, a book that guarantees your balls will be stomped; a book so manly that it will make even the burliest of men (and in some cases, the burliest of women) feel inadequate. So manly, it needs to be shaved: The Alphabet of Manliness. This collection of sacred writings may very well be the greatest compilation of all things manly throughout history. Here's a small sample of the ass-kickery found within these revered pages of outright manliness:

People getting drop-kicked in the face

Phallic aggression

Violence in excess of what has come to be known as excessive

Garish disregard for the well-being of children

Contempt for animals, women, and other cultures

Intimidating rhetoric

Obscure penile references

The triumph of flannel over good taste

This book is only for the saltiest, hairiest, most rugged son of a bitch out there. However, it would be selfish to keep it for myself, so feel free to buy a copy. This humble tome of wisdom is a tribute to all men who toil away at work every day, getting their balls busted, or busting balls.

If you can't handle the punch to the colon I'm about to deliver to you, look on the bright side: you'll save a fortune on Halloween when kids come to your door to pick apart your candy ass. On the other hand, if you feel comfortable with the risk of having your ass neatly packaged and handed to you with all the trimmings, cut the foreplay and crack the book open already.

2 out of 5 stars Falls Short of expectation.......2007-09-27

I thought this book would be hilarious, assuming that the guy that wrote post after post of side splitting rants on his website would be able to translate that wit into book form. i was wrong. most of it sounds forced and a lot of it is so sexist that even i, who revels in offensive humor, was bored. i hardly laughed once throughout. a shame because Maddox is usually a funny guy.

5 out of 5 stars Just for men (and some women).......2007-09-25

Warning: This book is awesome
Warning2: Not for most women.

This book is every (real) mans bible. It is the truth of what we men think about half the time. Full of manly techniques and manors, you will laugh until the tears come out in joy. One of the best bathroom readers I have ever had.

4 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2007-09-14

This book taught me all I know about life and how to live it. I really know how to pick up the ladies now!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the website.......2007-09-12

Maddox is at his best when deriding something topical. I love his site but found this book to be predictable and boring. It's probably good for a laugh if you're a pre-teen boy though.

3 out of 5 stars Not as funny as the website.......2007-09-10

The book is pretty childish and superficial, and doesn't have the entertaining wit and sarcasm that The Best Page In The Universe has.

Book Description

Now in its' ninth edition, Milady's Standard Textbook for Professional Estheticians has been thoroughly revised to include the most up-to-date information available today. Written by Joel Gerson, one of the industry's top authorities on skin care, and Alison O'Neil, a leading expert in the medical esthetics arena, this updated text contains all the essential information needed to ensure greater success for students taking the state board examinations. For the first time, this text is presented in full-color, incorporating a brand new, user-friendly four-color design that will help students learn the common links between the concepts and principles of skin care. Over 500 new full-color photographs and illustrations support the text content and include new step-by-step photographs for many of the procedures presented. All new photos have been incorporated in the chapter on skin disorders and diseases, special esthetic procedures, client consultation and skin analysis, and color theory and cosmetic techniques. A running glossary in each chapter helps the student become familiar with the language of skin care, and procedural notes and safety tips help to reinforce concepts. Expanded discussion on safety and sanitation topics reflects changes made in OSHA rulings and decontamination and infection control. Added discussion on advanced topics including AHAs, BHAs, glycolic, and microdermabrasion techniques give students exposure to those skills that will make them more marketable. Milady's Standard Textbook for Professional Estheticians, 9th ed., is the essential textbook for basic esthetics training.

3 out of 5 stars No Excuses For Milady.......2007-03-12

As this is the ninth edition of what is alledgedly the most widely used text for beginning estheticians, then the persistent use of mediocre-to-poor science is inexcusable. Doesn't the author consult *anyone* in the scientific/medical community before sending this thing off to the printers? It is *not*, for instance, an established fact that vitamin A protects human beings from cancer of any sort. There is certainly data that looks promising, but that's it. And since vitamin K is manufactured in the intestinal tract, why is paper wasted insisting that students, many of them fresh out of high school, should be memorizing the names of the food sources of this abundant nutrient? Many of these kids struggle with the science that *is* relevent to the profession they hope to enter. My husband is a doctor, I'm an RN, and neither of us has ever used the term "non-striated" muscle. It's "smooth" muscle, for crying out loud! And while I'm on the subject of muscles, absolutely none - not one - healthcare professional I'm acquainted with has ever learned anything about the "belly" of the muscle! No matter - 18 year-old kids have to learn what is not required of first-year medical students. Please. Yes, as a basic introductory text it has much to recommend it; all the more reason to get the science right. S.T., RN, Rochester, NY

4 out of 5 stars Better textbook than prior years.......2005-09-29

This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.

4 out of 5 stars This is a good all around Beauty School book.......2005-08-21

Most of the chapters are well written and understandable. I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen.

Book Description

Kreitner and Kinicki's Organizational Behavior, 6th Edition, continues its tradition of being up-to-date, relevant and user-driven. Kreitner and Kinicki's approach to organizational behavior is based on the authors' belief that reading a comprehensive textbook is hard work, but that the process should be interesting (and sometimes fun). Thus, they consistently attempt to find a way to make complex ideas understandable through explanations, contemporary examples, and/or learning exercises.

The cover again depicts the well known visual brand of Wolves. This remains a central theme because Kreitner and Kinicki see wolves as an instructive and inspiring metaphor for modern Organizational Behavior. Wolves are dedicated team players, great communicators, and adaptable. These are key success attributes in today's workplace.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Organizational Behavior.......2006-02-25

This text book does an adequate job of looking at the topic of Organizational Behavior. For someone that has been in business for several years, there is not a lot of new information, good review and some common sense stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Must read book.......2005-07-29

For me this book had a great value. I used it on a college course after having faced the experience of being working on an IT company for 8 months. Actually I would say this book doesn't say anything anyone could not come up with; but I think that's as phylosofy is, common things we are used to, but that hardly we note to be able to do something about. I think this book is being very useful for me even after almost 3 years of be working, I think it helps you understand most of those frustrating situations we have to face daily on a company, allowing us to feel better on our work enviroment, be better partners on work, and make our work a little more productive. Definitly I recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Common sense in a bound volume.......2000-10-19

This book discusses a topic that is a grab bag of different disciplines and has nice illustrations but i dont know if it is worth close to $100. Anyone who has significant work history intuitively knows a bulk of the material in this book. The book could be condensed to include the hard data and scientific findings and leave out much of the intuitively obvious commentary. This book is no worse than scores of similar textbooks on 'soft'topics but with the way prices are going many students are captive buyers, forced to buy textbooks at the teacher's request for perhaps questions used in the book for grading purposes while the general info can readily be found in college libraries.

3 out of 5 stars Scholar's choice.......1999-09-20

The book may be a good choice for a scholar of OB. If you are a graduate student like I am, you may find it difficult to follow and overloaded with scientific terms. To my mind, the simpler the better, which this book is not.

Book Description

Organizational Behavior, Seventh Edition continues in its tradition of being up-to-date, relevant and user-driven. Kreitner and Kinicki’s approach to organizational behavior is based on the authors’ belief that reading a comprehensive textbook is hard work, but that the process should be interesting (and sometimes fun). Thus, they consistently attempt to find a way to make complex ideas understandable through explanations, contemporary examples, and/or learning exercises. With every edition, the authors make every effort to respond to user feedback and ensure the text covers the very latest OB research and practices. The seventh edition of Organizational Behavior again uses the familiar wolf image on its cover. This remains a central theme because Kreitner and Kinicki see wolves as an instructive and inspiring metaphor for modern Organizational Behavior. Wolves are dedicated team players, great communicators, and adaptable. These are key success attributes in today’s workplace. Organizational Behavior uses these fundamentals to explore and explain the forces behind conventional corporate behavior and organizational theory.

This book is FULL of incredible information for those wanting an introduction to OB or a more in-depth look. While it is a bit weighty (and, like most text books, expensive!) I'm extremely pleased with the breadth and depth of information it covers in OB in the context of business, global organization, and best-practices. A GREAT text for OB classes!

    Book Description
