Book Description
For over 20 years, the character Vampire Hunter D has haunted the imaginations of people around the world, its image forever etched in the mind’s eye through the dazzling artwork of Yoshitaka Amano. As the original novels appear in English for the first time, American readers are clamoring for a more extensive look at this singular creation. Coffin obliges. This gorgeous retrospective embraces the full scope of Amano’s work with the character: in the novels, as inspiration for the animators of the two theatrical films, rare paintings, and illustrations created for release as limited edition prints. In addition to the breathtaking artwork, Coffin features an original Vampire Hunter D short story by creator Hideyuki Kikuchi, available nowhere else.

Beautiful.......2007-07-09
I bought this book for my boyfriend, who is a huge fan of the series. I cannot speak from my own experience with it, but from his near fainting reaction upon receiving it, I would say it is definitely worth the money. From what he has said, the artwork is incredible. I would recommend it for any fan of the series or the art.
Awesome book........2007-04-20
The art in this book is detailed, beautiful, and breathtaking... I was blown away by even the pictues which were only sketches.
I recommend it highly to fans of Vampire Hunter D... as well as anyone who is an art fanatic or art book collector... or even just someone who loves Vampiric things in general.
Gorgeous book!.......2007-03-02
This book is HUGE, which it should be to show off the fantastic artwork. Loved it! All Vampire Hunter D fans should get it, just don't expect it to fit in your book shelf.. lol! Pay close attention to the dimensions in the item description. It also comes in a slip case to protect the book.
To die for.......2007-02-14
The kind of book one wants to open and roll himself or herself all over the pages. Huge size, excellent paper, amazing printing quality, and I can go on practically forever. Much better than the Japanese edition which is small and most pictures are not even full size, but cropped. (Yes, I am crazy enough to own both editions!) Amano is a genius. His lines and forms are flowing, his colours mesmerizing. Invest in what will hold you spellbound for hours.
awesome D.......2007-01-10
love the art book. a must have for D fans and Amano fans.

Book Description
12,090 A.D. It is a dark time for the world. Humanity is just crawling out from under three hundred years of domination by the race of vampires known as the Nobility. The war against the vampires has taken its toll; cities lie in ruin, the countryside is fragmented into small villages and fiefdoms that still struggle against nightly raids by the fallen vampires - and the remnants of their genetically manufactured demons and werewolves. Every village wants a Hunter - one of the warriors who have pledged their laser guns and their swords to the eradication of the Nobility. But some Hunters are better than others, and some bring their own kind of danger with them. From creator Hideyuki Kikuchi, one of Japan's leading horror authors with illustrations by renowned Japanese artist, Yoshitaka Amano, best known for his illustrations in Neil Gaiman's Sandman: The Dream Hunters and the Final Fantasy games.
Customer Reviews:
So long awaited, it has 5 stars no matter what........2007-09-22
My only problem with this book is that the translation seems rushed. In Movie to book, you have the image of a hack writer watching the DVD copy and just going along with the action. There's a parody of "Movie to Novel" of the Lord of the Ring movies that does this and makes Tolkien fans shriek like they are Lovecraft characters seeing Great Cthulhu.
Well, foreign translations, especially great culturally different ones, risk the "All your base are now belonging to us" speech. And I note a little of this, not so much as in the dialogged but in the descriptions of the characters and their motivations. There is a bit too much on how this character, despite being a weird "Post Apocalypse" mutant/vampire/whatever is "Special" in some way...
So, you've got to be a bit forgiving here. For all I know the translation author had no time and a super strict contract protecting the contents. And, if you read such a fiction as "Vampire Hunter D" you need to turn up your "Suspension of Disbelief" to the level of a child or a fursuit lifestyler.
But, do not let this scare you away. I got the novel eagerly and loved it. Vampire hunter D is an experiment in style as much as any 'fantastic' story. I'm sure, if it was translated perfectly, it would be up there with some of Clark Ashton Smith's best works.
I really, REALLY wish Dark Horse would re-write this. I don't really have a problem with who they used, except that this story deserves the ultimate hack; Harlan Ellison. Serious. He's worked for/with Dark Horse before. Just lock him in a room with endless coffee, the movies, the "All your base" literal translation and the english hack's attempt, and the promise of a few quick thousand plus royalties if he follows the "Just make a good novel out of that story" instructions properly.
Most net users only know the "King of Cranks" Harlan Ellison who sued AOL over online trading of his works. Grow up, it's the guys who bought obscure patents and sued for blackmail purpouses, or the person who tried to patent the "Hyperlink" who threatened the net, and he had far more reason than the RIAA for the unpopular line he went down.
Anyone who's read his stories knows he'd be the best for the job. I'd suggest "Quicktime", "Repent Harlequin said the ticktock man", "Deathbird", "Friend of the Enemy" and so on. And if you need any further convincing, look up his "Chocolate Alphabet" underground comic. Yeah, he's old, but that's ok. "The Glass Teat" is another one.
He'd have a field day with this. He'd probably go "Gaaaaahhhhhh!!!! They want to KILL ME!!!!" the first few days, then get really, really drunk and churn out an incredible novel. He'd do what Adam Warren did with the Dirty Pair; Make the American Version so good, it is illegally imported into Japan because the fans like it better!
Vampires are pretty cool.......2007-07-26
Vampire Hunter D Volume 1 tells the tale of a young girl being bitten by the nobel Vampire Count Magnus Lee, a vampire at least 5,000 years old. She looks for a way to defeat this vampire before he takes her for his wife, as the Count hasn't tasted blood as sweet as hers in ages. She hires D to defend her and her young brother and destroy the Count. It is hinted that D might be the descendent of the greatest vampire of them all, Dracula.
Their have been two movies created based off the books, both animated. But the book goes much more in depth about the strength and weaknesses of the vampire. D struggles since he is a Dhampir, half vampire, half human. You get a real feel for each character and the battle scenes are well drawn out. It is a pretty easy read and great read if you enjoy the whole vampire legend.
First book of a long series and I plan to read the rest.
Perfect........2007-07-24
I loved this novel, which is funny, because I didn't like the first Vampire Hunter D movie which was based on this novel. The movie cut out a lot of the information, mostly background and character information, which would allow us to understand and enjoy what was happening.
We get a bigger picture of life, or what life is like, on the Frontier, in the Capital and in the year 12,090 A.D. First published in 1983, given birth by the author watching Horror of Dracula starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, it still has a lot of punch. And for a vampire lover like me, I really enjoyed the setting, the characters, the plot and even the action scenes. A must for any vampire library.
Warning, this is NOT a graphic novel or manga. This is a text novel.
It's A Great Book.......2007-07-15
When this book came out I was boucing off the walls. And I got it when it first came out and I love it! As being a fan of Vampire Hunter D I have loved all the books I have read so far.
Before I go on telling about the book. WOULD SOME OF THESE PEOPLE STOP BASHING THE TRANSLATION! My God, the translation fine as it is! There's nothing wrong with the translation and there's nothing wrong about how the book is made. Why do people go worrying about such stupid things??? The translator uses exellent grammer that I myself have to get a dictionary to understand some of these words.
The book is no where as detail as the movie. It is more detail and talks more about the world that D lives in than it does in the movie. And you finally get to learn what that thing is in D's left hand.
D meets a girl name Doris Lang, but she is different from the Doris Lang in the movie. D actually as charcter in the novles. He is not like the D in the movie he doesn't complain about himself being Vampire or that his world is utterly cover in darkness. He accpets who he is and is fine with it. He has a wicked sense of humor, his personality is that of Dracula or Alucard from Hellsing without the insaneness. And you'll find out in the thrid book that he has no problems with some human marrying a vampire.
He meets Doris and her Brother Dan. He must stop Count Lee from turning Doris into a vampire. I am not going to go much into the story, don't want to spoil it at all for the other people. There's few more charcters in this book than there was in the movie.
I first, I thought Doris was a very cool charcter, but later on she becomes weak and depends on D too much, which really annoyed me. D's left-hand is an enjoyable charcter and very funny. And you found out that D sometimes enjoys the company of his Left-Hand.
In this book and through out the other books, the main villian points out in a very sudtle way that D is the son of Dracula. By key words "You're . . . You can't be . . . It's you ... and ect. And in every Vampire Hunter D book I do not get bored when the author tells how hot D is all over again. :) I have a vivid imagation so I enjoy the details of his godly looks. :) As you read this book and other books you do get the feeling if his father isn't the one that sent his son to destory these vampires and that his father is getting tired of these Noblies.
Read the book and see for yourself. :)
Don't see the movie, read the book!!!.......2007-05-29
This book was amazing, I'd seen the two vampire hunter D movies years ago, and they were okay, a nice story, but it most seemed about the darkness and gore rather than any real vampire mythology. They didn't leave a real imprint on me, except for a crush on D. On a whim I decided to read the book recently and I was utterly shocked. The movies are nothing like the books, the books are rich in myth, story , emotion and suspence, that the movies just don't hope to touch on. D is a very gripping character simply becuse you almost cannot like him...he's so cold, detached and almost heartless....but every now and then he'll do something so kind and privotal you cannot help but to like him and wonder what exactly does this egnimatic vampire/human feel...if anything.
This book sets the scene very nicely for the rest of the series, in the movie Doris was so awfully clingy and annoying. However in the book she's MUCH more likeable, and self suffient.

Book Description
Granny Viper is a “people finder,” a searcher for lost souls along the roads of a forbidding wasteland. Her latest mission: the safe return of a young woman named Tae, kidnapped eight years ago by vampire Nobility and held in Castle Gradinia on the Frontier’s far border. But rescuing Tae is only half the battle — Viper knows she and the girl can’t cross the formidable expanse to the town of Barnabas alone. After making the fatal mistake of hiring the mercenary Bullow Brothers to help her, Granny turns to the legendary Vampire Hunter D for salvation. As they traverse the bleak desert between the Inner and Outer Frontier, the two women and D find themselves in a race for their lives. And they soon discover how cruel the desert is — and how very ruthless the Bullow Brothers are . . .
Customer Reviews:
Far above the other books.......2007-09-10
I've been tearing through the D books for the past few weeks, enjoying them to varying degrees. This one breaks the mold of the previous books; there's no vampire to kill, no maiden to save, just a band of people attempting to cross a very dangerous desert.
I wouldn't call this book character-driven, but the characters are much stronger than in the previous outing. D gets shows some emotion this time around, even if his demeanor rarely changes. However, the real star of the book is Granny Viper, by far the most complex character that Kikuchi's written.
If you only get to buy one entry in the series, make it this one.
Another Great Book From Hideyuki Kikuchi! :).......2007-07-16
I can't get enough of the Vampire Hunter D Series! :) I have read almost all the books expect for 7. All the Vampire Hunter D books are wonderful.
What can I say without spoiling the book too much??? This time our extermemly good looking dark hero D. As a Mission to go across the hot and deadly dessert to do whatever bussiness. In a bar he meets Granny Viper who is a people finder. And the two Bullow Brothers Bingo and Clay.
At first it is unclear what D's Mission is. Granny pushes him to go along with her to the other side of the dessert to help her bring back a girl name Tae back to her family. The Bullow brothers and Granny follow D across the dessert. Further as one reads the dessert is not what it appears to be. And the plot is very twisten and it will surpise you at the very end.
It was a wonderful read and I can't wait to read the next book. :)
Best. One. Yet.......2007-02-23
In this installation of the ongoing Vampire Hunter D series Hideyuki seamlessly and beautifully blends his three favourite genres; Horror, Western, and Fantasy.
After being greatly disappointed with the previous book, this one was a great save, filled with interesting characters and mind-boggling fantasy elements. But never fear, there is still plenty of blood and fang-baring including many references to "Him" or Dracula himself.
All in all, this is my favourite Hideyuki novel so far.
A character driven novel.......2007-02-15
The "bad guy" in this particular novel is largely environmental, so the installment focuses more on the charaters than the action sequences- a truly fabulous development in my book. D himself is somewhat more "emotional" in this novel, giving us a chance to see how he feels about being a dhampir and his father's mission.
Granny Viper is an interesting character, her angery outbursts at seemingly random intervals come together in the end to help highlight the character development of D with ever seeming designed for the purpose.
The novel's coquette, Tae, is likable even though she never seems to manage the depth of Doris or the forcefulness of Leila. She brings out the human-ness in D but not though swanlike tragedy but calm resolve.

Book Description
In a world where even the smallest and most remote village is being terrorized by the monsters that stalk the night, there is a hamlet, prosperous and peaceful, where mortals and vampires have lived in harmony for years. It is there that 17-year-old Sheavil Schmidt has slept, neither waking nor aging, for 30 years since first receiving the vampire's immortal kiss. The mysterious Vampire Hunter D is lured to the tranquil oasis by recurrent dreams of the beautiful, undying girl bathed in an eerie blue light and dancing in a ghostly chateau.
Customer Reviews:
A Few Words.......2007-07-15
This book has a very interesting twist at the end. Think of it like Alice in Wonderland. Yet again, I love the book.
D and Sleeping Beauty.......2007-05-09
An interesting twist to the saga of the dhampir, D. In this story we find D unable to get a good night's (or is day's?) rest. Not because he is hounded by demons and bounty hunters, his nights are restless because everytime he closes his eyes he experiances the same dream over and over again. And when he arrives in a village that has been at peace with vampires since who knows when, things get even more strange when he meets the girl in his dreams...asleep for the past 30 years from a vampire's "kiss."
As with the other D novels, we are plagued constantly about how beautiful the dhampir is, which gets old after the 2nd or 3rd novel. But unlike the previous 4 novels, D is placed in a situation unlike anything he has faced before. No matter how much he tries, someone or something will not let him leave the village. To say more will ruin the excellent story.
An excellent read. Recommended age of reader, 13. No sex, mild language, some horror violence, but nothing a teenager couldn't handle.
More ghost than Vampire.......2007-02-15
Were D not a dhampir, it would be very easy to describe this volume as more ghost story than vampire novel. Even though the story is precipitated by a vampire's kiss (from our mysterious HIM, presumably D's father), the main thrust of the story is from the reality vs. perception conflict more common the the ghost-story genre.
I greatly admire the atmosphere of this particular novel and feel that it would become a beautiful film, as it has a great deal of nuance and symbolism. (In this way it far outshines the almost frantic fourth novel)
Sybille (the girl the sleep bringer loved) is yet another victim of His dream for the future, a dream which she shared and in which she became entrapped. This meta-conflict has been brewing for several books (popping up in the second and fourth books as well) and unlike the fourth book we see it here as something perhaps more beautiful than sinister.
Mildly confusing, but highly entertaining........2007-01-12
For the casual reader, even some not-so-casual, some of the aspects of the novel can be very confusing: what's real? what's not? But, overall, I found myself very much enjoying this book, as I have the previous 4, and would recommend the series to anyone who is into fantasy/sci-fi settings.
Another great book.......2007-01-10
Yet again another great book from Hideyuki Kikuchi. I have enjoyed all of this series so far, but the only thing I wish was that the translation was a little better. I really pretty good, it just sometimes the wording doesn't make sense at first. In the end you do get the jist of it. Great book, and if you liked the movies you should pick up the series.

Book Description
Eons in the future in a toxic, terror-stricken world, The City is a veritable paradise. A tiny hamlet of a few hundred sheltered citizens, it floats serenely just a few feet above the ground on a seemingly random course, safe from the predation of marauding monsters. But paradise is shattered when a vampire invasion threatens the peaceful haven. While the Vampire Hunter known only as “D” struggles to exterminate the lethal scourge, the gorgeous Raleigh Knight and the brash John M. Brassalli Pluto VIII seize control of The City, launching it on a new and deadly course. D’s travails are just beginning.
The heart-stopping thrills and nightmarish plot twists that fans of series have come to expect are on full display in Vampire Hunter D, Volume 4. Six stunning illustrations by the renowned Yoshitaka Amano underscore Hideyuki Kikuchi’s hellish vision of the future.
Customer Reviews:
Moody and thoughtful.......2007-09-22
Raiser of Gales is an interesting, and I think introspective and thoughtful adventure. It more firmly establishes the what and why of D's world. Also, the wording in this novel is well written, far less "All your base-" than ended up getting through in the first translation.
My favorite is that an enemy uses a type of trap that was later incorporated into the second D movie, but I've risked spoiling it enough here.
Vampires rule the night..........2007-08-21
...but when they're victims start moving about and killing people during the day time hours that can be a problem. The people of the village of Tepes are starting to become paranoid, seeing evil in everybody and everything. And they weren't too pure to begin with. Now they have the tall, dark, and handsome Vampire Hunter D in their town. And he is not too sure it is a vampire that is the problem.
Can D solve the mystery before too many people die at the hands of the new type of vampire? Can he solve the mystery before too many people die at the hands of their own protectors?
Great story, great illustrations, great second book to the ongoing Japanese horror series. I will be collecting as many as I can. Get it used or new!
Yet Again Wonderful Book.......2007-07-16
I liked this book as much as I love the first one. This time D finds himself a world he just can't get out of. It keep repeating itself over and over again. The girl in this book as quit a charcter and did not annoyed me as much as Doris Lang. She keeps following D where ever he goes. And he always tell her to "Go Home" Which always made me laugh. The girl he meets is very interested in Vampires and D in the novel finds her strange. WOW that something coming from D. The book was fantasic as always. But it's little sad at the end though.
Would make a great movie.......2007-01-24
This book would definitely make a great anime movie. The story is action-packed and full of unexpected twists and turns. However for me it was not as exciting as the second and third novel, may be because of the fact that it was all action and no feelings. I personally like to see a softer side of D. As much as I love reading all Kikuchi's novels I still don't understand why D enjoys hunting Nobles and protecting humans despite of the fact that humans are always trying to kill him one way or the other. Maybe we'll find out by the end of 17th novel...
progress is being made.......2007-01-14
Many have already commented on the translation, so I will just take a moment to note that it has certainly progressed a bit beyond that of the previous novel. Action sequences in particular seem to have taken on a smoother pace, though the rather spartan and abrupt nature of the original text still causes the occasional coltish wobble.
As with all VHD novels there is a haunting quality to the prose that shines moon bright: D is still more or less at war with his soul, and our plucky coquette-du-livre is enjoyable. The odd coyness about Left-hand (the wise cracking sidekick/parasite) remains; though, since the novels are not particularly linear, this may be less noticeable to those who do not read the books in order or back to back.

Book Description
The third volume of the popular Japanese series comes to America in Vampire Hunter D: Demon Deathchase. The vampire hunter known only as D has been hired by a wealthy, dying man to find his daughter, who was kidnapped by the powerful vampire Lord Meierlink. Though humans speak well of Meierlink, the price on his head is too high for D to ignore and he sets out to save her before she can be turned into an undead creature of the night. In the nightmare world of 12090 A.D., finding Meierlink before he reaches the spaceport in the Clayborn States and gets off the planet will be hard enough, but D has more than just Meierlink to worry about. The dying man is taking no chances, and has also enlisted the Marcus family, a renegade clan of four brothers and a sister who don't care who they kill as long as they get paid. Beautiful illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano complement the post-apocalyptic plot, filled with chilling twists. Co-Published with Digital Manga Publishing.
Customer Reviews:
From Movie to Book.......2007-06-12
I first watched Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust before picking up this novel, and I am glad I did because it makes me respect this book even more! At first I thought it was going to be a hard read after reading some reviews... so I watched the movie (which I loved) so I bought the book. As is in most cases, the book trumps the movie by far. There really is much deeper story to the book than the movie. I was unable to put down this book for days. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the movie(s) and/or Vampire Tales.
Just amazing!.......2007-01-05
This is the book that the second Vampire Hunter D movie is based on. If you thought the movie was good: this is WAY better. Some of the scenes that might not have made much sense in the movie are better explained in the original story, and there are pleny of shocking elements in here (probably considered too much for the movie) to keep you turning each page. Definately worth the money!
Unfortunately, the movie was better.......2006-07-01
I bought this book from Barnes and Nobles a few weeks ago, along with the first volume of the series. I was really excited to get started on them and found the first volume, simply titled "Vampire Hunter D" a very entertaining book. After reading that, I immeadiately snatched the third book off of my bedside table, beginning to devour the words. The opening was interesting, but it didn't really capture me the way the first book did.
Well, I didn't enjoy this as much as I enjoyed the movie. The book had scenes that were WAY different from the movie. Leila actually expresses her feelings for D, Meir Link is known as Mayerling in the book, Charlotte isn't called Charlotte in the book but is an unnamed girl instead. But this book should be appreciated since it IS the original version that inspired the movie. But there were parts where I went, "Oh man, when is this chapter gonna finish?" and got sort of bored, but I just kept on reading, nonetheless. When I finished, well, I didn't feel the satisfaction I had when I read the first book. This version is somewhat creepier (not that it's bad) but boring. Some of the characters use the f-word throughout the book, which really annoys me! I mean, hello! Kids at a high level of reading could be reading this!
But don't skip this book if you're gonna watch the movie. It's still worth your time.
I Can't Get Enough of the Vampire Hunter D Novles! :).......2006-05-27
So far I love all the Vampire Hunter D Novles. It was a lot better than the movie. It was nothing like the movie. It was very different from the movie. Hopefully next time they make another Vampire Hunter D Movie (I hope they do.) I hope they follow it more closely to the book. D as a twisted, cold sense of humor. I love the book and I can't wait to read the next one.
charming.......2006-03-10
I read all three volumes now, don't ask me why, and at last I decided to "believe" the translator. I'm quite sure this is how literal translations of Japanese horror novels might look. I do doubt you'd find many published books in this style, so go for it. It's a highly entertaining read. Perhaps I have a twisted sense of humour, but sometimes I was laughing so hard that I had to put the book down, and I really have to refrain from screaming at random people "oh you countenanced carbuncle, you!"
As to the plot of volume 3 - well, no, you don't need it to enjoy "Bloodlust". The love-life inside the Marcus tank might even be a bit off-putting for sensitive minds (the Hand's unfulfilled desires are very interesting though!), and you don't really want to hear D's musings about the female soul, believe me.
I give three stars, two for the brave translator and one for another great detail about D's luggage: After learning in volume 2 that he carries a self-heating sleeping-bag, I was now delighted to see that his emergency kit expired like 500 years ago. So much for being invincible, ha!

Sandman fans should feel lucky that master fantasy writer Neil Gaiman discovered the mythical world of Japanese fables while researching his translation of Hayao Miyazaki's film Princess Mononoke. At the same time, while preparing for the Sandman 10th anniversary, he met Yoshitaka Amano, his artist for the 11th Sandman book. Amano is the famed designer of the Final Fantasy game series. The product of Gaiman's immersion in Japanese art, culture, and history, Sandman: Dream Hunters is a classic Japanese tale (adapted from "The Fox, the Monk, and the Mikado of All Night's Dreaming") that he has subtly morphed into his Sandman universe.
Like most fables, the story begins with a wager between two jealous animals, a fox and a badger: which of them can drive a young monk from his solitary temple? The winner will make the temple into a new fox or badger home. But as the fox adopts the form of a woman to woo the monk from his hermitage, she falls in love with him. Meanwhile, in far away Kyoto, the wealthy Master of Yin-Yang, the onmyoji, is plagued by his fears and seeks tranquility in his command of sorcery. He learns of the monk and his inner peace; he dispatches demons to plague the monk in his dreams and eventually kill him to bring his peace to the onmyoji. The fox overhears the demons on their way to the monk and begins her struggle to save the man whom at first she so envied.
Dream Hunters is a beautiful package. From the ink-brush painted endpapers to the luminous page layouts--including Amano's gate-fold painting of Morpheus in a sea of reds, oranges, and violets--this book has been crafted for a sensuous reading experience. Gaiman has developed as a prose stylist in the last several years with novels and stories such as Neverwhere and Stardust, and his narrative rings with a sense of timelessness and magic that gently sustains this adult fairy tale. The only disappointment here is that the book is so brief. One could imagine this creative team being even better suited to a longer story of more epic proportions. On the final page of Dream Hunters, in fact, Amano suggest that he will collaborate further with Mr. Gaiman in the future. Readers of Dream Hunters will hope that Amano's dream comes true. --Patrick O'Kelley

Awesome~.......2007-10-03
Easily one of my favorites with Amano's art, a beautiful but sad tale with Amano's incredible art to bring the mythical tale to life~ Five Stars and worth your money.
A Beautiful Story.......2007-09-16
This is a beautifully told, self-contained tale in the Sandman series. The artwork is stunning and the writing is incredible. Neil Gaiman writes characters that are beautiful, subtle and intelligent. Really, just an all-around beautiful piece of art.
Beautiful.......2007-04-02
The art and the story combine to make this a beautiful work. Removing the setting to a fairytale takes this book out of the "graphic novels are too serious literature" debate and makes it clear that this is entertainment, storytelling, and art. Of course it's nice to see Morpheus lurking around, but anybody could read this (and enjoy it), no knowledge of comics, Sandman, etc., required.
The most beautiful Sandman I've read........2006-10-24
I've read quite a few of the sandman comics but haven't been inspired enough to purchase one. This is my first. While I've always enjoyed the mysterious world that Neil Gaiman creates, I at the same time hate The Sandman character. The incarnation of Dreams as a hipster doofus just don't do it for me. And Thanatos(the incarnation of death) as a ditsy punk rock girl? WTF? In fact, I almost didn't read The Dream Hunters because hipster doofus is on the front cover. Luckily I gave it a chance.
The Sandman character does make a brief appearance in The Dream Hunters, it is kept to a bare minimum.
The story itself is wonderful. The art is far better than anything I've seen in a Sandman comic before.
The story had me gracefully and slowly turning each page. The ending left me with slight chills.
One could easily read this entire comic in less than an hour but it took me about 3 days because I had to put it down often in order to soak in the world in which our characters lived their love.
A beautiful story and visually mesmerizing.
One important thing people seem to have missed..........2005-11-09
This story is not based on an old Japanese folk tale as I have seen repeated over and over in these reviews. Gaiman made that up. It is his own story. And to get people to believe that, even the reviewer on CNN, shows how truly magical he is.

Book Description
Even a reluctant hero can’t refuse the last request of a beautiful woman. On her deathbed, a mortally wounded woman gives Vampire Hunter D a strange gem and asks him to deliver the priceless stone to her sister, in a far-off, North Sea fishing village. D’s journey is made ever more perilous by a series of scoundrels and rogues hired by the woman’s murderer — they’ll stop at nothing to claim the jewel. Will they catch him? Hideyuki Kikuchi’s crackling narrative and Yoshitaka Amano’s imaginative artwork make this a must-read entry in the series.
Customer Reviews:
I have a soft spot for this series........2007-06-22
Like all the Vampire Hunter D books, this is set in the year 12090AD. The incredibly handsome and beautiful D again comes across a nubile teenage girl who manages to gain his services and become her protector. There are the usual bad guys with superhuman powers who arent able to match D in looks, knowledge, or fighting skill. All in all, a pretty formula type of book.
But I liked it :)
As this is Book 7 in the series, I assume you are aware that this book is an English translation of the original written in Japanese in the 1980's. Because of this, the sentence structure and wording is a bit, let us say, wonky?
But I think it gives the series a bit of charm and uniqueness. Whatever the reason, I like it and this book is a good fantasy read.
I'm looking forwards to the next one!
Mysterious and Haunting.......2007-06-10
This is the first part of the first of the two-volume Vampire Hunter D tales (according the afterward by the author, there are currently two other double volume tales), this book floats along at a leisurely pace with no real push toward resolution, which may frustrate some readers.
There is really no coquette in this particular novel, for even though D does encounter and become employed by the older sister (Su-In) of the "beautiful girl" of the book's tagline; she lacks the helplessness and desperation that marks so many of the other distressed damsels.
The primary themes of this installment are nostalgia and destiny. The nobility in this book are mourned by Su-In as beautiful monsters who were never really much different than humans, even for all their violence and genetic dabbling. She looks back on the past with the wistful longing-loathing with which we often associate with Victorian England.
I'm very much looking forward to the resolution of this story, which will be relased in September, if the back of the book is at all reliable.

Book Description
Vampire lore dictates that the creatures of the night shun the sea... or do they? The picturesque coastal town of Florence was known for millennia as a pleasure resort for the Nobility. As retribution for their decadence, the cruel and beautiful vampire inhabitants were "punished," driven out more than a thousand years ago by a solitary traveler in black. Only one - Baron Meinster - refused to leave, only to be thrown to the waves by the mysterious assassin. Summoned to contemporary Florence by Su-in, sister of a murdered village girl, the enigmatic Vampire Hunter D discovers a vampire curse ravaging the town's human inhabitants. The plague apparently originating, impossibly, from the unforgiving sea - could it be Meinster's Revenge? A thrilling conclusion to the epic gothic adventure begun in Volume 7, Vampire Hunter D: Mysterious Journey to the North Sea Book One, this tale captures all the mystery and wonder that has made Vampire Hunter D a sensation around the world!
Customer Reviews:
Out with a bang.......2007-09-07
Wow, I have to say this book was far better than any of the other ones so far. A perfect blend of drama and action, some of the more relevant art work yet, and is the first in a huge leap in characterization. The main heroes and villains are all well developed throughout the story(with the exception of two-ish)and with so many villains your always kept guessing what's next. It is a fitting end to Kikuchi's first run, before rebooting the franchise in 1995 with the Rose Princess. In his post-script he describes it as one of his favorite projects, and it's easily one of his best. There is one thing though, the amazon rating system is very flawed. Former D books have been given 4-4.5, so I had to give such an exceptional volume a 5, but in actuality it is really a 4.3 on my scale, as the average D book would be a 3 and a better one a 3.5.
