Book Description
Esperanza Ortega possesses all the treasures a young girl could want: fancy dresses; a beautiful home filled with servants in the bountiful region of Aguascalientes, Mexico; and the promise of one day rising to Mama’s position and presiding over all of El Rancho de las Rosas.
But a sudden tragedy shatters that dream, forcing Esperanza and Mama to flee to California and settle in a Mexican farm labor camp. There they confront the challenges of hard work, acceptance by their own people, and economic difficulties brought on by the Great Depression. When Mama falls ill from Valley Fever and a strike for better working conditions threatens to uproot their new life, Esperanza must relinquish her hold on the past and learn to embrace a future ripe with the riches of family and community.

Yo, Yo,Yo!! By Jacky-Boy .......2007-09-10
Yo, Yo, Yo, Pay attention I'm telling you about a great book. Sheesh!! Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan shows how the life of a young rich girl is turns upside down and how she struggles to keep her family afloat. To begin, Esperanza's life is perfect. She lives on a huge ranch in Mexico surrounded by servants. Then, in a stunning turn of events her father is murdered by bandits. After the death of her father, the greed of her uncles forces Esperanza, her mother and three of their former servants to move to California to find work. Unknown to Esperanza and her family is that her greedy uncles want the ranch for themselves. Esperanza's uncle asks for her mother hand in marriage so they can both have the ranch. Esperanza's mother is unwilling to do so. So seeking revenge the uncles burn down their beautiful house. In the process they injure Esperanza's Abuelita (Grandmother). After sending her to recuperate with her sisters, Esperanza, her mother, Alfonso, Miguel, and Hortensia go to California. Once in California they go to a work camp. No sooner had they gotten settled in, then Esperanza's mother is taken ill by Valley Fever. Too weak to continue working, she is sent to the hospital and Esperanza must take over work for her to pay the bills. She is also saving to bring Abuelita to California. If you wish to know what happens you must read the book for yourself. Mwah hah hah hah!! Believe you will like it (if you don't then you're just a little weird). =]

While she is ther she is trying to work. But then her mom gets sick and she works extra hard to pay her mom`s bills andraise money to bring her abuelita( grama) to her mom. She also has feelings for Miguel, a servant boy. I give this unbelievable book 5 stars. I would give it more if i could.

To the great joy of her many fans, Tamora Pierce with this book begins a new saga of Tortall to add to The Song of the Lioness Quartet, the Immortals Quartet, and The Protector of the Small tetralogy. At the center of each of these books is always a strong and resourceful young woman who masters the arts of swordplay and knightly warfare in the magical medieval country of Tortall. Alianne, or Aly, daughter of the warrior queen Alanna the Lioness, has all these skills, but also a delicious sense of humor, which serves her well when she is chosen by the trickster god Kyprioth to serve as his secret agent and a slave for a year in the embattled Copper Isles. There the dark-skinned natives, or raka, have been conquered and crushed by the laurin, light-skinned people from the mainland. The burning raka resentment is fueled by prophecies of a twice royal queen who will free them, aided by the "wise one, the cunning one, the strong one, the warrior, and the crows." Just how each of the colorful characters and Aly herself fit into this prophecy and Kyprioth's tricky plan keeps readers guessing. Aly plots to show her skill at spying as she flirts with the god and is courted by Nawat, a crow transformed into a handsome young man, who is puzzled when she rejects his attempts to mate-feed her with grubs and ants.
The pages of this long but fast-paced adventure zip by, enlivened by intrigue, skirmishes, comedy, romance, and lots of dramatic clothes. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell

Older & Wiser?.......2007-09-27
I must admit that I was lax to read Tamora's new series because I am usually disappointed by author's new writings -- but I must say that Tamora has impressed me again and again with this new series.
First of all, I think her writing has changed age groups. I know that it's recommended for the same as her others series (middle school and up), but I think that this series will appeal to adults as much as children, and maybe less to some of the younger ones. (Do not fear; any die hard children fans of Tamora will appreciate and love this novel as her others, I'm sure.) Her writing is more intricate in this book, more detailed, aimed on a girl who is more of a woman from the start. While Alanna's & company (Daine, Kel) took place when they were far younger, Aly is 16 in this book. I think that it sets off at a place where more mature thoughts / actions / plots can be established, and in this case, very believable.
This novel is well crafted. Tamora does a wonderful job of fleshing out the characters, though for the first chapter or two, you may fumble with all the names. By chapter five though, at the latest, she has made them all seem very life like.
I also enjoyed how real Aly was. She is not the ultimate spy. She messes up just like any other, and she is still a child in some ways. I must also admit that her views on flirting are so amusing, I was grinning through a lot of the book. I do wish Aly had more interactions with Nawat, in general. He's a fun character, and he seems to randomly appear and disappear for pages, which was annoying.
It was also good to hear about Uncle 'Numy' and Aunt Daine, as well as seeing more of George and Alanna (though they are by far minor compared to other characters in these series).
It should be noted that this series is not as magic based as her other ones have been. This is more like Kel's than like Daine's, because Daine was very magic centered. Aly is more about politics, relationships, how people interact, and about a young woman trying to find herself. If it sounds cliche, oh well.
I would recommend this to all who have any interest in Tamora Pierce's previous novels, as well as Kushiel's Dart. While this is not a sexy plot twister like Kushiel, it is an easier, lighter read of the same line of thought. Yes, that is a compliment. :)
I cannot wait for my order of Trickster's Queen to arrive!
Almost total waist of time.......2007-08-16
Other than this book being boring but slightly good, the characters were awful!! Don't waist your time reading it. It has a dumb choice of words and the characters are ill-described and have the most stupid of lines
Short & Sweet.......2007-08-10
My applause to both Tamora Pierce for an excellent story and Trini Alvarado for bringing it to life. An excellent series for those long rides home.
For you Book Reviewer Want-To-Bees, please keep it to a paragraph or two, you tell to much and help no one.
a new kind of legend.......2007-08-06
Alianne of Pirate's Swoop is a new kind of heroine, one you either like or dislike. She is a heroine who works primarily with her mind, not her body. Where other Pierce heroines, such as Alanna (of the SONG OF THE LIONESS series), Keladry (of the PROTECTOR OF THE SMALL quartet) and even Daine (of the IMMORTALS quartet) worked mainly with their fighting or magical ability, Aly, lacking in too much of either, uses her smarts and that is why she has taken Daine's place as my favorite Pierce heroine to date.
In Trickster's Choice, after running away from being her mother's latest project, Aly is captured by pirates and sold into slavery on the Copper Isles. Her new masters, the Balitang family, are among the good ones and, next thing she knows, Aly has made a deal with the Trickster God of the Isles, Kyprioth: if she keeps the two Balitang girls, Dovasary and Saraiyu, alive through the summer, he will let her go home and convince her father to let Aly do the one thing Aly wants in life: spy. What follows is a story of political intrigue and adorable crow-boys that is both entertaining and intelligent.
Although Pierce throws a lot of names around that are hard to get straight (and, at times, pronounce), the story is not too affected by it. Aly thinks on her feet and meets every difficulty with a spirit and fierceness that would make her mother, the Lioness, proud. She also finds a bit of a romance with Nawat Crow, a crow-turned-man who takes an immediate liking to Aly after Kyprioth commissions the crows to help her with her side of the bargain.
Nawat's ignorance of human culture and eagerness to court Aly are entertaining and amusing, as well as his ignorance of his human form's attractiveness to other girls (specifically Sarai, who gives him the opportunity to ogle her hips, but Nawat is too busy staring at Aly to notice). I find the two of them to be highly adorable, as is Aly's determination not to let her feelings for Nawat distract her from her duty. The cute little moment between George, Aly, and Nawat at the end of the book is quite enjoyable as well.
All in all, Trickster's Choice was a great read, which not only entertains, but challenges you to think, and watching Pierce's smartest heroine yet weave in and out of the political dangers was a real treat. I look forward to buying and reading Trickster's Queen.
very boring.......2007-08-04
This book bored me to death. Aliane seems a bit stuck up in my opinion. Also, Tamora Pierce wrote her to be perfect at just about everything she does. Aliane's character seems way too unrealistic for my taste; I like to be able to relate somewhat to the characters, personally. plus it feels sort of rushed, and at the same time very slow paced. Nothing much exciting happens during most of the book; it's just about how perfectly Aliane came figure things out to protect the Balitang family. AND nothing ever seems to phase Aly; not even when she's taken and sold as a slave. She's just all "Oh it's no big deal, I'll just get away once I'm sold 'cause im so smart." Seriously, that's how she acts most of the time. This book is no where near as good as Tamora's last books. Lucky for me I only checked the book out from the library; I'd suggest that if you're interested in this book that you do the same.

Book Description
Sylvania originated where Ten Mile Creek and Ottawa Creek meet, an area favored by the Ottawa Indians. Sparsely settled at first, Sylvania grew after the War of 1812. Increased settlement, construction of better roads, and expanding railroads brought many opportunities to Sylvania. The Territorial Road that passed through Sylvania became the first thoroughfare between Toledo and Chicago, and the Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad laid track through Sylvania from Toledo and Adrian, Michigan. This book provides a glimpse into Sylvania's rich history through photographs of the people, events, and businesses that made Sylvania the great place to live that it is today.

An enjoyble book on Sylvania's history.......2007-02-21
I enjoy the historic photos and excerpts in Arcadia's Images of America and Sylvania is a welcomed edition to the series. This well-researched book contains interesting photos and details about Sylvania, Ohio. Sylvania is a charming walk down memory lane for those who grew up in Sylvania and an enjoyable read for those interested in Sylvania's history. Authors Wenninger and Gindy did a wonderful job putting this book together.

Book Description
They were sisters once.
Almost forty years ago, in a more innocent time, two girls enter the convent. Angelina and Joanna come from vastly different backgrounds, but they have one thing in common -- a desire to serve, to join in the community of sisters.
Despite the relative seclusion of the convent house in Minneapolis, they're not immune to what's happening in the world around them. In 1972 Angie's involvement with a pregnant teenager triggers a crisis of faith. At the same time, Joanna's relationship with a Vietnam veteran brings her face-to-face with the choices she made -- and didn't make -- in her own life.
Then, Angie and Joanna leave the sisterhood, abandoning the convent for the exciting and confusing world outside. The world of choices to be made, of risks to be taken. Of men and romantic love. The world of ordinary women ...
Debbie Macomber illuminates women's lives with compassion, with love and with grace. In Changing Habits she proves once again why she's one of the world's most popular writers of fiction for -- and about -- women.
Performed by Trini Alvarado
Customer Reviews:
A Habit Worth Keeping.......2007-04-08
Changing Habits is an extraordinary book. It introduces us to three young women from different backgrounds, Kathleen, Angelina, and Joanna, and their journey through the convent and later life outside the convent. Told through their eyes, each chapter features one of the girls experiences and how it affects their life in the convent and eventually the women they become.
When I picked up the book, I didn't know how wrapped up in the story I would get. Each girl had their own story to tell and how their personal struggles affected themselves and their faith. I didn't know much about the Catholic Order, but with reading this book, I got information that was both interesting and not overwhelming. This book touched me in ways that most books can't even begin to match. It's a wonderful book that will make you think differently and look at your life in a whole new light.
A must read for anyone looking for a heartwarming and touching book!
I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE INTERESTING.......2006-01-24
It is one of the best books I have read of Debbie Macomber's. The three girls and their stories kept me up all night reading.
One of the Best Books I've Read.......2005-10-30
I absolutely loved this book and the author's style of writing. It was the first book I read by her but it won't be the last. In my opinion, this author works very hard to make her characters believable and interesting. Great book.
what a waste of time.......2005-10-06
Did I read the same book? I wish I could have those hours back. Perhaps this is not my genre - I read it because it was the choice of my book group. I'm sure I'll never read another book by this author.
Why didn't I like this book? It was sooooooo predictable after about 50 pages. And the writing was very bland and uninteresting.
Interesting premise - poorly written and developed.......2005-06-03
Had there been an in-depth treatment of the motives, situations, and dispositions of the four characters, the premise of this novel could have been intriguing. Unfortunately, the characters are quite one-dimensional, and the situations not treated with any depth. The general effect is of a poor play.
The attraction to convent life is peripheral in all of the subjects, and they do not ultimately confront true convictions or their own motives. The odd effect is of women in young adulthood (all leave the convent while still in their twenties) who are shaken by confronting troubling situations, common in some form to any adult life, and who find some vague solution merely by departing from convent life. The two who marry seem childish and impulsive in the choice (one drawn by a handsome face and the idea that she's got the man to return to church, the other suddenly contemplating marriage to her spiritual advisor, who cannot deal with having a homosexual priest in his parish) - though, at the end, there is a sense of 'happily ever after, one as Catholic, the other renegade.'
Though Macomber writes of an era when convent life was in tumult, neither the overall situation nor a directly related conflict in the lives of the Sisters is treated. The Sister who is unjustly accused of 'doctoring the books' for her own advantage, and the other who blames herself for a student's having a back alley abortion, seem to be running from their first look at tragic but common parts of life. The reader seems to be told that the Sisters are departing from an unfair Church, yet incidents such as these are never developed as quite common paths to mature knowledge of oneself.
The 'fudged' ending has no resolution or purpose. We learn that they have no regret for having been nuns, yet still cannot see what drew them to the life or how leaving was the answer to their problems.
The deficiencies in plot, theme (if indeed there is one), and characterisation are all the more unfortunate because a premise such as this could have been fascinating. The potential for reflecting history, exploring spiritual and psychological aspects, and treating of the complexity of human nature was ignored. We are left with one-dimensional characters who cannot even consider the larger picture of their own community.

Arte Povera: Movements in Modern Art
ASIN: 888158316X
Release Date: 2001-02-02 |
Book Description
The Arte Povera movement, similar to other movements of its time such as Conceptual Art and Process Art, brought about a radical redefinition of art itself, and provided an alternative to the increasingly hegemonic art trends of the day. Arte Povera: In Collection examines a significant nucleus of historical works of the Arte Povera movement from three important collections: the Museum of Contemporary Art Castello di Rivoli, the Galleria d'arte Moderna in Turin, and the recent acquisitions of the Fondazione CRT in Turin. Included here are 90 works by the leading protagonists of the Arte Povera movement: Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Gilberto Zorio. The book focuses on these artists' legendary works from the 60s and 70s, but also includes some recent work from each artist. In addition, the book features new, unpublished essays by each of the artists--except for the deceased Boetti--as well as historical texts by major art critics Tommaso Trini, Harold Szeemann, Jean Christophe Amman, and of course Germano Celant, who coined the term ''Arte Povera'' in 1967.

Alannna is the best -- according to my 12 dd.......2007-05-13
This is the second book of the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce. I bought the series for my daughter- she enjoys the strong female character who works her way from being a page to being a knight. There are plenty of action packed adventures, quirky characters, and suspenseful subplot with evil wizard.
My favorite of the 'Song of the Lioness' quartet!.......2007-03-31
Alanna is still disguised as a boy in the palace and is now a Squire. And not just any squire...she's Prince Jonathon's squire! This book is probably (in my opinion) the best of 'Song of the Lioness' quartet. Her secret is known by only a few people; of course her twin brother Thom, George Cooper, Alanna's great friend and thief, and Prince Jonathon who's been Alanna's friend for years.
In the beginning Alanna said, "I don't want to fall in love. I just want to be a warrior maiden." But...really that isn't going to happen. Two men enter Alanna's lives at the same time and if I was in that position it would suck! George Cooper and Jonathon of Conte.
I hope that you pick up this book and read it. There's excitement in every line! (But you should read 'Alanna: The first Adventure' first so you won't get TOO confused.
Great Book!!!!!!!.......2007-01-04
Alanna's quest for knighthood continues in book two of the Song of the Lioness quartet. Alanna's dream of becoming a knight is drawing closer as she becomes Prince Jonathan's squire. But good news hardly ever comes without bad news, especially in the world of fantasy. There are obstacles facing Alanna. Some of which include the war against Tusaine, capture at Fort Drell, a deul with a friend that turns deadly, and the Ordeal of Knighthood. 'In the Hand of the Goddess' is an exciting continuation of Alanna's story. I love this book.
Read 'In The Hand of The Goddess'!.......2006-12-31
Alanna is in the palace as a squire to the future king Prince Jonathon and is still secretly disguised as a boy. Because of course in this time girls were not alowed to become knights and defend their country. While Alanna is a squire her suspicions about Duke Roger, one of the best sorcerors and the heir to the thrown after Prince Jonathon. She believes that he's trying to kill the king, queen and even one of her best friends Jon, one of the few who knows she's actually female. Alanna doesn't enjoy breaking the rules but she must so she breaks into Duke Rogers rooms and finds evidence proving that Roger is guilty but who will believe her and what will become of her if people find out her secret? Read this book because it's a gaurenteed great book!

Alan, or Alanna?.......2006-07-18
Well, well, well. "I don't want to fall in love. I just want to be a warrior maiden" kinda went up in smoke, didn't it? Alanna is starting to feel differently about some of her friends-quite noticeably, in fact. But it wouldn't do to fall in love, now would it? But Alanna deals with her new feelings admirably, as well as her new role as a squire to none other than the heir to the throne of Tortall, her good friend Jonathan, one of the few who knows "Alan"'s true identity. Also, a great dislike bordering on hatred, mingled with fear, is formed for a certain sly cousin of the prince's-Duke Roger, the most powerful sorceror in the Eastern Lands. Sure, he's charming, smart, and wealthy-but Alanna feels like she is the only one that expects he's up to something. After several very mysterious near-disasters, Alanna is getting more and more agitated, but is still unable to prove anytying. Then, disaster strikes, soon after her Ordeal of Knighthood, one of her three fears(which you will learn about in the first chapter)and Alanna challenges Duke Roger to a duel, or risks the deaths of the rulers of Tortall and their councillors. Also, by a mere stroke of bad luck, Alanna's identity slips out-nothing too bad, don't worry, Alanna's dignity is still in tact-while dueling with Duke Roger, and so after the duel(whether she wins or loses, regardless)Alanna plans to go to the South to let the court steam and fume over her big secret. This book is probably my favorite of the whole series, because Alanna finally learns how to cope with love(not that I agree with that)and also her fear of her own magic. Readers will not be disappointed!
