Global warming is the story of the twenty-first century. Alarming--because it's factual.......2007-08-17

As an environmental policy grad student, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what we're in for with climate change. But after reading this book I've realized that, oh no, it's worse than I thought. The book starts out by describing the nasty potential futures facing us if we fail to take sufficient action, and soon. This bit comes across as somewhat sensational, but Romm quickly moves in a very well done review of the scientific literature backing up the scary part. The account of the unified effort to deny the validity of climate change and delay action is also well executed.

Highly recommended for anyone who needs a little motivation to start caring about climate change!

If you want the facts about global warming and what we need to do about it straight from the experts' mouths, this is the book for you. It covers everything about global warming from the media's bias to the various policies we need to implement to avoid catastrophic climate change, to the consequences if we fail to avoid it. Absolutely fantastic book.

I thought this book was really interesting in explaining the US politics behind global warming and the what has not been done in recent years by the US to curb global warming. It goes into great detail about the issues the planet faces if we do not reduce our CO2 output into the atmosphere.

Good advice rarely is heeded...........2007-05-04

Romm brings quite a bit of expertise and gravitas to his arguments. Arguably in the know about government policy practices Romm lays out both a convincing scenario about global climate modification (see no GW balderdash!)and a set of coherent policy solutions to prevent the worst of the problem. Unfortunately, I agree that while a solution is "doable" it won't get done. Goodbye Florida, goodbye Louisiana!

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Hilarious, moving & instructive.......2007-07-13

This book might win a Newberry Award if it were for younger kids and didn't use naughty language. That's the sort of thing I'd compare it to.
I've never written a review before, but this book, which I listened to in my car with my 12-year-old daughter, was wonderful. We both laughed out loud a number of times; it's extremely witty (and the audio narrator does an excellent job). It's heart-breaking at times (child abuse, loss). And it's very instructive for young people trying to make sense of the world, especially complex issues involving race, psychology, child abuse, and such.
It's arguably a bit much for a 12-year-old -- lots of questionable language (authentic, but "naughty"), and a few references to people having sex (nothing graphic, though). I'd prefer it for years 15 and up, but my daughter seemed to get a lot out of it, and the parts that worried me ... well, I hope they sort of went over her head. But I was delighted to have her hear about life from the perspective of a multi-racial kid, especially one who accepts himself but still has to put up with grief from morons in his high school.

Talking Whale?.......2007-06-13

Whale Talk

Do you have a big heart full of the kind of love that you would give a friend or even a complete stranger? That's how the Tao (pronounced The Dow) is in the book Whale Talk by Christopher Crutcher. The book takes place in Spokane, Washington. T.J Jones (The Tao) and his teacher, Mr. Simet, get together a swim team for Cutter High School. Mr. Simet has one reason for the swim team, and T.J. has another for the team, but it's the complete opposite of Mr. Simet. T.J. wants to help Chris Coughlin out of his bulling problem (Chris is handicapped). T.J. ends up going to the State championship and winning two events. But after the Championship, a tragedy strikes, one that will haunt T.J. until the day he dies.

My favorite part of the book is when Chris Coughlin gives T.J. some love back. Through out this book, T.J. shows Chris the love a friend would give a friend. This makes it special because T.J. loved Chris as a friend, that Chris gave him love, in the form of something, in return, even when it wasn't expected.

The theme of the book is love. This book shows that if the world doesn't have love, it has hate and if you don't have love, you have hate. With out love in the world, there would be no peace. It also shows us that even if you are a different color you still have the right to be loved.

This book was one of the best books I've read. I would recommend it to anyone who has a big heart with enough love for everyone in the world. I liked this book so much, because it caused me to stop and think, to check and see if I had enough lover in my heart for everyone in the world, just as the characters had.

Definitely worth the time to read.......2007-03-08

Whale talk was an incredible book. Not only was it written in a way that kept your attention every second of it, but it covered several important themes. Almost anybody in highschool or even older would enjoy this book because of its relevance to school life. The subject of racism in this book makes the reade think. The main character is one of the only non-white residents of their town, and even their area of the state. His struggles with racism are mainly in an attempt to make life better for another little girl in his town, not to stand up for himself. The main character is all about fairness, and he will do whatever it takes to stand up to people making life worse for someone else. He is responsible for starting a swim team at his school that makes it easy to get a varsity letter. The biggest reason why he did that was so that the brother of a now-deceased school hero can get his coveted varsity letter. Because their school is such a jock school, the team of misfits is not very widely accepted. The team is made of social outcasts and unlikely athletes, but they all end up very close to eachother. This book was inspiring athletically and thought-provoking socially. I'd reccomend it to anyone.

THIS BOOK IS ABOUT SWIMMING AND SPORTS IF YOU LIKE SPORTS AND LIFE AND LITERATURE, THAN YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME A TEAHER I HAD EVER ASSIGNED ME A BOOK WITH THIS AMOUNT OF SWEAR WOODS WHICH WAS ODD. THIS BOOK WAS A LITLLE HARD FOR ME TO READ BY MYSELF. THIS BOOK WAS A 220 PAGE BOOK, I LIKE LONG BOOKS WITH THAT MANY PAGES. YOU SHOULD ALSO TRY TO READ THESE OTHER CHRIS CRUTCHER BOOKS LIKE IRONMAN, STOTAN,AND CHINESE HANDCUFFS. A whale of a good book!.......2007-01-18

This is perhaps the best book Crutcher has penned. It is a good technical novel with plenty of literary merit, but more importantly it will put your brain on spin cycle if you ever thought you had your mind made up about just about any social issue. It will literally turn your soul and make you think about the power of what comes out of your mouth as you brush up against the human condition each day. You might think they are mere words, but Crutcher shows us that what flows out of our mouth has the power to curse, or to bless--no matter what you believe about God. If you have any reluctant readers in your world hand them a copy of this book. I have used it in the classroom for my more rebellious students, and I have yet to have a kid hand it back to me without finishing it and then asking for another Crutcher book.

Disappointing.......2007-07-06

I bought this book on the strength of the sample photos. Unfortunately, they were the best of the book. The rest were disappointing. Although the book is 94 pages, there are only 44 photos. Most of the pages contain just a title or a silly poem. I'm not sure why this was done, but the word 'padding' comes to mind. Very few of the photos are truly inspiring. As another reviewer said, they are kind of boring.

In the same shipment I received Working the Light by Joe Cornish, full of really stunning photos from various photographers. Highly recommended.

Pretty but Boring; Nothing New.......2007-06-28

Historically, most photographers have printed their own material. Not always, but most. W. Eugene Smith was one who was obsessive about printing his pictures to achieve exatly what it was he wanted. Other photographers did not print their own pictures, but their images shone due to the strength of their new and unique visions and compositions. This is not the case with this book or this photographer.
I found nothing new in these pictures. They are functional, but they are also prosaic and plain, and, unfortunately, reexamine tired themes and compositions previously exhausted. Clearly the photographer has strong Photoshop and printing skills, but there is no authentic or new photographic vision here. The photos look as if she spent more time on the computer than in front of the camera or even looking closely at her subjects. When she photographs a tree branch with the blurred, flowing water behind it, it has been done. Repeatedly. There is a picture on her website taken in Monument Valley that is nearly identical to one oc Ansel Adams's taken in color at least 50 years ago. The picture does not pay homeage nor does it pay respect. It does not rise above the level of mimicry.
The compositions of the photographs are also stale and freshman. The look complacent and convienent. It does not look like much effort was place into their conception or capture. There is another picture of the author on her website phbotographing in the cold and snow. This is not the suffering for one's art that the old masters, I believe, had in mind. I see more emphasis on understanding layers in CS2 than being placed on working to find a different point of view from which to photograph.
I would resists buying this book. The artist's vision and composition skills have not yet exceeded her grasp, and as a result, nothing is any different here. She does not or is not able to connect with her subjects like Weston or Sexton or others. I have no doubt that she will make a lot of money using her pictures for stock photography sales, but I do not recommend this book. It should arrive at your local library soon enough.

A contrarian point of view.......2007-03-29

This book has some very nice and perhaps unique photographic compositions, and it's perhaps worth buying the book for that alone. But I couldn't get past the almost phony or Thomas-Kincade-like appearance of many (certainly not all) of the photos.

If I want to look at paintings I'd rather buy the work of the painter or a book of reproductions. When I buy a photo book of landscapes, where it is being represented that the photos are real representations of actual places and times, that's what I want to see, not cotton-candied, smoothed over prettied-up versions. I suspect that a little too much balancing light and dark areas or messing with contrast values in Photoshop is the culprit, or perhaps something in the chain between the photo digital file and the book printer. A prime example is the cover photo.

However, I suppose that the way the photos look in the book is what the photographer intended, and represents her vision of what her artistic goals are, and that certainly is valid, but just not my taste. I suspect most people will not agree with my opinion, and that is fine, but like I titled this review - it's a contrarian opinion.

A gorgeous book.......2007-03-12

This book is beautiful - the photographs are stunning, and have a strong sense of personal creative vision. I own many landscape photography books, and this instantly became one of my favorites, its images are serene but powerful and take you to a distant place. They go far beyond simply documenting a location, and clearly show the artist's vision and love for these places. If you enjoy landscape or these places, this book shoulds not be missed!

I think one of the greatest contribuition of this book is that it covers so many aspects that the athlete must care about outside of water and that are as important as rowing techniques. It covers methodolgies to become disciplined, to analyze progress, enhancement and assiduity. Covers very well the practices that should be taken in gym (weight work and stretching) focused on rowing, as well as very interesting and easy to understand physiological aspects of human body during the practice. The book obviously covers very well the rowing techniques and competition strategies.

I am a rowing coach and instructor. I find this book to be an indispensible tool for athletes and coaches alike. Form the basics of the stroke to training for "high performance rowing," this book covers it all in depth. Everyone who rows should read this book. Buy it for your boathouse and pass it around!

John McArthur is coach at a UK rowing club and has written a book for those who aspire to excellence in the sport. The book is up to date in areas of rigging, physiology, technique and training. What is more, McArthur explains the "why" and the "how" behind rigging and physiology - something usually skipped. This is not a book which will help beginners directly, but it will inspire and inform the beginner as well as the elite athlete. And I guess that's what I liked most about it: treating rowing as a form of athletic endeavour and giving the intelligent and committed rower enough information to enable him or her to understand every aspect of the sport and so to come to an informed, sensible position which suits their capacities and aspirations.

This book is primarily for those who row on water, rather than those who use an erg indoors, as I do. That being said it's a great book, crammed full of important and relevant information.

It has detailed tips on improving technique, comprehensive explanations of what kind of training to do to achieve a certain goal, description on how to write a training program, and competiton strategies. It gets very specific in several areas regarding strength, endurance, power, and how to increase all of these. There are charts and graphs, diagrams and photos, the works!

Here is a compelling and descriptive audio about Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath. Professor Michael Eric Dyson points out that the majority of the people most affected were black and poor, and sees the problem as more than just a simple emergency response failure. He provides background information about the tense race relations in the city before the hurricane, along with the national media's response that may have contributed to racial bias in the United States.

Bad Planning; Worse Response.......2007-07-06

Hurricane Katrina was an event in which almost no one came away looking very good (OK, maybe forecasting chief at the National Hurricane Center, Max Mayfield; and the Coast Guard and Gen. Honore), and Dyson takes every level of government, particularly the federal government, to task, in this short but powerful book. About every five pages, you'll find yourself gasping "No!" and "They couldn't have done that!" but they did, exacerbating the suffering of the poor and forgotten, particularly in New Orleans.

Dyson lost me somewhat near the end with a fairly complicated theological discussion of the event and its aftermath. I don't think he endorses floodwater theology, the idea that God punishes the wicked with natural disasters, but I couldn't quite make out his point in this section (the Editorial Review above seems to have done a decent job on this point).

Overall, I recommend this book to those with interest in natural disasters and in the role of race in public policy. Based on Mike Tidwell's study of Katrina and global warming, "The Ravaging Tide", these are issues that everyone should be engaged in. My wife says Breach of Faith: Hurricane Katrina and the Near Death of a Great American City written by the New Orleans reporter who wrote Amazon's editorial review is an even better book.

A message sure to resonate with readers of all races........2007-06-10

Come Hell or High Water is a scathing audiobook indictment of the Bush administration's and FEMA's failures to sufficiently aid New Orleans' mostly poor, mostly black population in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Heavily researched, Come Hell or High Water explores Katrina as the latest link in a legacy of black suffering perpetuated by the apathy of middle and upper class Americans of all races. Above all, Come Hell or High Water charges that American society's destructive path toward its African-American poor can only be altered if the public acknowledges that the Katrina debacle was far more than simply an engineering or emergency response failure. The means by which America and its people relate to its poor must undergo a transformation; nothing less than the future of democracy is at stake - a message sure to resonate with readers of all races.

Another Rant from Dyson.......2007-01-20

If you liked Michael Eric Dyson's other works then you will love this. It is essentially his standard "blame Amerika" rant with the words New Orleans, and Hurricane Katrina thrown in to render the work germane. The interesting thing about this book is how quickly it was published after Katrina. Given the length of time required to get a manuscript onto bookshelves, I calculated that he must have written this in the two weeks following the storm. Given that some of the "facts" he cites about Katrina can be shown empirically to be false, perhaps he should have waited just a little longer before jumping into the fray.

Another blow to Dyson's neo-Marxist take on Katrina is the Knight Ridder news story released in December (2006) that showed the pattern of death and to a certain extent destruction did NOT occure on racial/class lines as Dyson would have us believe also casts doubt on his narrative (for example, as a percentage of population, there was a stronger correlation between age and death than race and death. If those found dead in nursing homes were factored out, as a percentage of population, more white people than black died. Can we then surmise that George Bush hates old white people? The main stream media, with few exceptions, did not pick up on this story because like Dyson, they had already decided the Katrina narrative and they are not about to let the facts ruin a juicy story.) Those of you who know Dyson's work of course will know that he was probably chomping at the bit from day one to throw his opinion into the mix.

Anyone who followed the coverage of Katrina probably heard various religious figures blaming the evil nature of New Orleans for incurring god's wrath. Offensive as these views may be, I was surprised that Dyson - a writer who is considered to be a first rate accademic by many - would wast a whole chapter refuting such arguments. In fact, by even arguing against these positions he is giving them more credence than they deserve. If any book about Katrina is to be taken seriously, it probably should not contain a whole chapter on the pros and cons of various theological interpretations of the disaster. True, the author is an ordained minister but perhaps he should leave his views on divine retribution in the pulpit where they belong (it is also ironic that given Dysons neo-Marxist critical approach to race, etc. that he would even counternance the notion of god. let alone engage in the arguments he does here.)

So, if you are a fan of Dyson's, buy this book - you will be neither disappointed nor challenged (because you already know what he is going to say.) If you are interested in the state of contemporary leftist "academic" thought then this is a good read because it is far more accessible than the works of many of Dyson's peers yet encapsulates the narrow race/class/power/gender optic through which they view capitalism in general and of course this most wicked of nations, Amerika.

I've read the other reviews so I'll keep this short and to the point. This is the best yet in Glynn Alam's series about LuAnne Fogarty. The familiar characters are still in the story and it is like meeting old friends to read of this latest mystery. Early in the book I wished there was a map showing the positioning of the houses along the lake, but I quickly realized that it was not important. I wish parents with teenage children would read this book. There is a lesson in it and it might help someone get help for a troubled teen if they could see what happened in the story. All that aside, it was a excellent read. Once I got to the middle of the book, I could not put it down. Now I await the next in this excellent series!

Mysteries of the Ladies of the Lake.......2006-11-25

The fifth in Glynn Marsh Alam's mystery series about professor and scuba diver Luanne Fogarty, "High Water Hellion" is the best story yet.
The characters we have grown to know from previous books - Luanne, Tony, Vernon, and Pasquin, among others - have temporarily moved from the swamps of north Florida to an interesting new Central Florida locale.
Nothing is what it first appears to be as the deaths of feisty older women that were first thought to be from natural causes may be anything but natural. The mysteries deepen as more is learned about the dead women's neighbors, and the threats to potentially thwart the investigation grow more intense, including aggressively mating alligators, snakes, and high winds and water from a powerful hurricane. Threats from nature turn out to be the least of Luanne's problems as the story unfolds.
As always, Alam's descriptions of her Florida settings are vivid and the reader can truly see and feel the houses along the lakefront (especially what it must be like to ride out a hurricane), as well as easily imagine being in the area's roadhouse eating ribs and slaw and visiting with a rattlesnake in the fireplace.
In terms of style, story and character development this is a winner.

Look What the Hurricane Stirred Up.......2006-09-17

Luanne was admittedly a little reluctant to go help Tony Amado. His aunt, Miss Keen, has just died, and rumor had it she had thrown something into the lake near where she lived. Tony needed Luanne to come and dive in the lake to find whatever it was his aunt threw in there.

The problems come almost as soon as Luanne arrives. Being early May, the alligators are in the middle of mating season. Miss Keen insisted on an autopsy, and the coroner finds foul play. And there's a hurricane coming, bringing its own damage and danger.

When I realized the action of the book was going to move from Luanne's home in the swamps outside of Tallahassee to central Florida, I was worried we wouldn't get to see the recurring characters. I had nothing to worry about as they all logically show up over the course of the book.

Since the setting is not in the area around Luanne's house, it allows the author to create a host of new characters. They are brought fully to life. There were a few characters I truly felt sorry for by the time the book was over. And several of the characters really creeped me out.

The plot moves along well in the first half. The hurricane becomes an important part of the story and not just an add on to make things more interesting. There was one major plot point I saw coming long before the characters did. I did feel they should have suspected what was going on long before they did, and I did grow a little frustrated with them in the second half. Then, the climax seems a little rushed as it tries to tie up all the plot threads.

Ms. Alam's writing is as strong as ever here. She expertly paints pictures with words while continuing to move the story forward. The descriptions kept me on edge through much of the book, adding suspense to an already good story.

Fans of the series will find another winner here. Anyone who loves a good tale well written would do well to check out this series.

Perfect setting for murder.......2006-06-27

Glynn Marsh Alam captures perfectly the steamy, shrouded northern Florida swamps in her first four books of this series. In this installment she sets professor and scuba diver Luanne Fogarty near Central Florida's city of Ocala during hurricane and alligator mating seasons while continuing to paint a death-perfect tropical landscape.

There, as a personal favor to enigmatic friend Tony Amado, sheriff's detective and sometimes boss, Luanne helps him search for clues to his aunt's death. The love-starved alligators are not the only predators surrounding his aunt's little lake-front cottage, but who killed her? Was it the reclusive, well-fed New Jersey family who had clandestine deliveries? Or maybe the handy man who showed up at the oddest times with his brain-damaged and abused sister in tow? Or maybe it is the wealthy old man and his land-grabbing son down the road? Whoever it is serves up another neighbor to the alligators before Luanne and Tony have gotten very far into their investigation.

The author serves up clues and red herrings while giving long time readers a tasty tidbit or two into the life of Tony Amado. Her lover Vernon comes to assist and Luanne's best friend and swamp neighbor Pasquin offers his expertise in swamp psychology and Cajun cooking.

You can almost hear the mosquitos buzzing and the alligators bellowing from the pages of Alam's fifth book of her delightfully deadly series.

5th in series.......2006-06-25

Alam's fifth mystery featuring Luanne Fogarty, this mystery moves from the panhandle area of North Florida to the more central area in Ocala. Luanne has agreed to help her sometime boss Tony in a personal matter since her classes for the semester have ended. She heads down to Ocala with her scuba gear in the middle of gator mating season, only to end up right in the middle of the current hurricane territory. Tony's aunt had died leaving instructions to have an autopsy no matter what the situation, which raised eyebrows but managed to bring attention to a dubious state of affairs. After discovering a neighbor's body floating in the lake after a storm, Luanne and her friends are convinced that something suspicious is going on in the backwoods neighborhood, between the missing animals and the mysterious deliveries to the New Jersey neighbors, the Bonos. But will they be able to unearth enough information to piece everything together?

Alam's work is very descriptive and weaves together an exceptional cast of characters. Having grown up in the north Florida area and lived there for over twenty years, I find Alam's work a wonderful way of visiting the area without having to travel there in person.

Excellent book on the subject of piracy. Having been overrun by pirates myself in the South China Sea, I was extremely happy with John Burnett's story of this on going problem. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Not Too Impressed.......2007-02-03

First off I have to say that I learned a lot more about modern piracy on the high seas than I ever knew before. This issue is something that needs to be dealt with before it becomes a thorn in the side of our world trade. I must add though, that this book is so redundant that it feels as if you are reading the same page over and over again throughout each chapter. I was not impressed and it DID NOT keep me on the edge of my seat. Bottom line here is that yes I learned something new, but my time could have been better spent with another book or learning something else.

An enlightening page turner!.......2006-09-13

John Burnett is cleary a journalist at the top of his game, and this book is no exception. He sheds a bright light on a huge problem we all have, not just those of us who go to sea. Not only does modern piracy pose a threat to the lives of everyone who ventures into any waters where the US Coast Guard is not there to protect us, but it also threatens our worldwide economy possibly on a scale greater than 9/11 did. Not to mention the environment.

I strongly advise everyone to read this book, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it as you learn more than you thought you ever would about modern piracy!

A fascinating book, and a scary one with oil at $70/barrel.......2006-04-29

Here's a little food for thought from this enlightening, thought- and emotion-provoking book:

The latest Very Large Crude Carriers, even larger than our stereotypical ideas of a supertanker, are easier to rob than a semi. Probably easier to hijack, too. Certainly, in the case of terrorirsts, easier to hijack than a passenger jet.

How easy? It happens regularly now, and it takes less than 20 pirates to take over a supertanker. Why don't we hear about it more? Big oil companies and shippers don't want to report it for two reasons. One, they're afraid of driving up insurance rates; two, they're afraid of showing how vulnerable they really are.

Now, courtesy of further information in this book, let's think about a possible hijack.

One deliberately wrecked VLCC or supertanker would shut down the Straits of Malacca and cripple much of Asia's, and the world's, economy. Oil ships both east and west here, with Indonesia a major, OPEC producer and Japan and China to the north and northeast, India to the west, and Australia to both southeast and southwest, all major importers.

With Muslim fundamentalists in Indonesia, and Sumatran separatists, alongside of a crumbing post-Suharto nation, this is a flashpoint, anyway... not to mention organized crime here and in the South China Sea, plus Abu Sayaf in the Philippines.

Supertankers aren't the only ships that could be hijacked, though. Burnett talks about ships that are already hijacked, not for their cargo, but in and of themselves for reuse, after suitable "chop shop" work.

This is a great book to learn a lot about modern shipping, and to get a huge wake-up call about the seriousness of modern piracy.

Burnett writes a gripping and suspensful account of modern-day piracy. I appreciate how in-depth he gets about VLCC's and pirates tactics to board those ships. This is a great book and so much more in-depth than "The Outlaw Sea". Kudos to John Burnett for including his own experience with pirates in this excellent book.

Great story and adventure to relive through the eyes of one who was there

What a great TRUE story..........2006-12-23

of family cooperation, perseverance and adventure! I always thought I was the adventuresome type, but the Barry family puts me to shame. Following their trip from England to the U.S. was fun and insightful, plus a fantastic geography lesson for my 5th grader! He loved looking at the atlas to follow their route. It's so nice to find a book that's not only entertaining, but also educational. A great read!!!
