Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-03-11
My students have been reading this book and giving it great reviews. It's a faster read than most of our Reading Olympics books, but they really seem to enjoy it.
Teacher's Grade: A-.......2006-07-14
I love reading this book aloud to my 2nd grade students. There is abundant humor, a lot of action, and excellent dialogue. The kids especially love the disgusting giant with flatulence issues, and the fire-breathing dragon.
This is an excellent springboard into reading for reluctant but capable boy readers.
You would think it was the authors fifth not first.............2006-03-24
You knew this was the authors first book, but you felt far into the story while reading....which made it good...I would like to read more books by this author.
The start of an empire.......2006-02-21
Finally Lane Smithh and Jim Szcieska have found their niche. These (now eleven?) stories are about to become a series on either Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network. And this is the book that started it all. Alas.
The good thing is that through the eyes of young boys the era of the Middle Ages is debunked from myth - it was smelly, dirty, unhealthy, and those suits of armor made from aluminium today weighed a lot more in those days.
But the story reads like it has a formula already: cliffhanger at the end of Chapter 1 (where do the boys wind up?), cliffhanger at the end of Chapter 2 (the boys are about to be attacked), cliffhanger at the end of Chapter 3 (the Book that got them there is in peril/unattainable/out of reach), happy resolution at the end of the book.
It's the young person's version of Robert Ludlum. Pity. I bought the first four books on the strength of other books by this dynamic duo, but I will not be buying the rest. I don't buy Robert Ludlum because I don't buy formula at any level.
Life is way more dynamic than that.
time warp series.......2005-10-27
the whole series is very good. should be in every library and school
Customer Reviews:
Triple the homicides, triple the intrigue........2007-05-25
Another great triple murder book by Rex Stout. In Kill Now - Pay Later, did the shoeshine man kill to avenge his daughter? In Murder Is Corny, why was the corn delivery man killed and more importantly, where is Nero Wolf's select corn? And last but not least, in Blood Will Tell, the brownish spot on a tie mailed to Mr. Archie Goodwin does turn out to be blood. The blood of a promiscuous young married woman whose husband is now accused of killing her. Three murders and three clients now suspected of murder. Nero Wolf with the help of the confident and engaging Archie Goodwin dissects each case and as always, resolves each mystery.
Overlapping Stories.......2004-10-06
Some of the stories (or novellas) in this collection are found in some of Stout's other anthologies, making it somewhat frustrating for the aficionado. Susggest skipping this one in favor of "Trouble in Triplicate," which does not reproduce the weakest of the stories here.
Good as always.......2002-09-06
Three novellas featuring Nero Wolfe, Archie Goodwin and the rest of the gang. What's new here is that Stout is beginning to speak forthrightly about sex. In earlier books, he'd been cunningly vague about sexual motivation or Archie's contact with women. Here, in stories written in the early 1960s, Stout first mentions pregnancy outside of marriage.
Some flaws, but fair puzzles.......2002-05-06
None of the 3 cases herein occur during the same year, one each occurring in 1960, 1961, and 1962. The common factor is, of course, that in each case a blunt instrument (speaking loosely) serves as a murder weapon.
"Kill Now, Pay Later" - Pete Vassos, roving shoeshine guy, regularly visits the brownstone. On this occasion, he left the offices of Mercer's Bobbins early, since Dennis Ashby (one of his regular customers) had just fallen to his death from a window. After a brief interlude as a suspect (Ashby was attempting to seduce Pete's daughter Elma, a stenographer with the company), Pete is found murdered, and Elma hires Wolfe to investigate. The fee is low, but the Vassos family hero-worships him.
The title quote is a comment made by Joan Ashby in the style of her late husband's favorite advertisements; he was a womanizer and deep in debt, although he'd saved the company from disintegration. Some of Wolfe's ploys include having his client as a guest in the South Room, and arranging for her to sue several suspects plus Cramer (!) for defamation.
"Murder Is Corny"- Adapted for A&E's 2nd Nero Wolfe season. Wolfe starts this case in a bad mood - farmer Duncan McLeod's specially picked guaranteed fresh corn-on-the-cob shipment (one every Tuesday in season) didn't show up in time for dinner. When Cramer appears at the door later that evening with the missing crate, they learn that Ken Faber has been found murdered in the alley behind Rusterman's while delivering their corn (Wolfe's still trustee). Naturally, they unloaded the corn before calling the cops. Cramer leaves with Archie in custody as a material witness - Faber had been spreading rumors about Susan's chastity, and Archie's now implicated in the murder by various lies told to the cops. While I like this story, I think it contains several clunkers in human behavior, especially known quantities on the staff of the restaurant, who should have tipped Wolfe off about the corpse before Cramer got to him.
"Blood Will Tell" - An odd item turns up in Archie's personal correspondence rather than Wolfe's - a letter on James Neville Vance's private stationery asking that he keep the enclosure until called for: an expensive necktie, stained with something that might be blood. Checking out this message from a stranger, who denies having sent it, Archie is present when the corpse of the promiscuous Bonny Kirk is found in her apartment in Vance's building - literally smashed by a bottle of vodka. When her estranged husband later asks to hire him, Wolfe accepts immediately - why is he convinced of Martin's innocence?
This is for the text version.......2000-12-25
The listener should not feel cheated over getting three novelettes instead of a full-length Nero Wolfe adventure. Rex Stout was a master at packing in all the flavor although delivering fewer calories; unlike many "lite" foods. "KILL NOW, PAY LATER": Don't waste your time feeling sorry for the first victim. I'm not saying that he deserved to die, but had this book been published in 2000 instead of 1964, Mr. Ashby would have cost Mercer's Bobbins a fortune in sexual harassment lawsuits. It's the second victim whose blood cries to Heaven for justice. When Wolfe reveals the reason the second victim died, I trust that you will be as angry as I was. As Archie Goodwin tells us, Wolfe would rather miss a meal that have anyone think he's a softy. Do not miss Mr. Wolfe's attempt to explain that he solved this case NOT for the sake of his loyal bootblack but for far less admirable reasons. As usual, Inspector Cramer's and Wolfe's remarks about each other are a treat. Persons who collect stories where there is a lawyer who is portrayed as honorable instead of a self-serving human roach with no interest in justice will want this one because Nathanial Parker, Wolfe's lawyer, has a speaking part. "MURDER IS CORNY": I have no tears to shed for Ken Faber, either. For those of you who were born after the Sexual Revolution, what he was doing was a particularly vicious form of slander for that period. (Why Susan MacLeod didn't just go to a doctor and come out triumphantly waiting a certificate or two that proved Faber a liar beats me. It might have saved a couple of lives.) As for which of the suspects did the deed, except for Susan herself and Archie (whom she brainlessly gets into trouble), all are men who love Susan. Those of you who bother to cook might want to find out if Wolfe's corn on the cob recipe is as delicious as learning how Wolfe Saves Archie from a murder rap and reveals the true killer. Personally, I found the concept of "born come-on", which Archie assures us that Susan has and isn't aware she has, rather unnerving. "BLOOD WILL TELL": This one starts out with a minor mystery -- who sent Archie the stained tie (is or isn't that stain blood?) and later calls asking Archie to burn it. Naturally, Archie chooses to investigate instead. This is why he's on the scene when an adulteress' bloodied corpse is found. I found this story the most fun of the three because Archie became increasingly frustrated at being left in the dark and Wolfe assumed that Archie should have been able to figure things out for himself. Will you spot the clues that enabled Wolfe to know that Kirk didn't kill his wife or, as did Archie and this reader, will you have to feel DUMB when they're revealed? Continuity nitpickers may feel free to pounce on the big error Mr. Stout made in chapter 6, where Archie claims this is the first time he ever saw a man slap another man. Even if you wish to argue that, technically, Archie didn't see himself slap that uppity jerk in THE RED BOX; how could Goodwin of the Matchless Memory possibly forget the sight of his boss slapping the insufferable Inspector Ash's face in THE SILENT SPEAKER?
Even if the reading of these mysteries is no more than adequate, that's enough to recommend this book to those who need the audio version or those facing hideously tedious car trips/waits at the airport. For those who prefer the print version, you might want to try Amazon.com's Z-shops or their sister company, Bibliofind.

Book Description
The first four books of the wildly popular Time Warp Trio series are now in one value-priced boxed set! Whether the gang's fighting off the Black Knight in the middle of Camelot, practicing magic tricks on Blackbeard and his pirates, stampeding cattle in the Old West, or running from a woolly mammoth, one thing is for sure: no one's ever bored when the Time Warp Trio's around!
Customer Reviews:
Knights are Meant to be Respected.......2006-12-19
I didn't like Time Warp Trio because when it began it was mostly about the knight. As you read on, it tells about the giant and the dragon. It made the knight look not very smart and like he had no power. The kids basically looked like they had all the power, even without armor. If I were the author, I would have had more action with the knight and the kids and the knight would have been the greatest fighter or he would have been up there with the greatest heroes. -LL
Poor langauge and inappropriate humor.......2005-12-31
I was very shocked when I read this book to find that so many people deem these appropriate for children. They do have some information for the kids to learn from (the reason I chose them originally) but the way the children talk and act is terrible! I had only thumbed through one and chose it from the library from my son, then I let him read the rest of the series and suddenly had him calling names and being disrespectful and LAUGHING about it!
I was really disappointed. I think things can be funny without name calling and using poor language. I am just glad I haven't ever purchased any.
A little too much like magic tree house.......2005-09-01
These books are really nice, but my daughter has already read a bunch of the magic tree house books and these are just too much like them.. she thinks these are funnier but the idea has no sparkle for her any more.. but I would recommend these books if you haven't started reading the tree house series..
Let's Do the Time Warp Again.......2004-09-23
I was going through some old books the other day when I happened upon my "Time Warp Trio" collection. What began as thumbing through "Knights of the Kitchen Table" ended with my reading all four of the stories right then and there. They were terriffic when I was little and they are terriffic now.
Great for boys!.......2004-03-26
It's hard to find books for boys that really turn them on to reading but these did the trick. My son insisted that I read them too so we could talk about the plots. Entertaining and well written, perfect for a second or third grader.

Book Description
Did you ever wonder what might happen if someone had a time-warping book they got from their uncle who was a magician and they took it to the local YMCA pool while they played Marco? Polo! with their two best friends?
Well, wonder no more. In the sixteenth adventure of the Time Warp Trio, it happens to Joe (and Fred and Sam). And what happens is: sandstorms, desert bandits, a smelly camel, strange horoscopes, the emperor of all China, hungry hunting dogs, attack leopards, killer hawks, and one very famous (if he doesn't get lost) explorer. If the explorer is Marco Polo, this must be 13th century China. And the Time Warp Trio's horoscope says, "Beware of mean cats, mad dogs, and even madder Chinese astrologers."

Buyer beware!.......2007-02-08
Our first edition copy of this book had a printer error. Pages 29 and 30 were completely blank. I sent it back to amazon and they promised me a refund. I don't know if all of the first edition books are like this, or if we were just unlucky. But if you want this book, you might consider waiting for the second edition or the paperback to come out.

Customer Reviews:
Egypt...... in time warp land.......2006-01-26
Time-traveling is not as cool as you think. Being mummified, being trapped in a secret room and having your friend almost eaten by a crocodile is not cool. But what is cool is being treated as a royal guest in Thutmose III's palace, sailing in his boat and teaching him basketball. So, if you like things that are cool and not, you should read this hilariously funny book.
Time Warp Trio Tut Tut.......2005-12-12
The book was about three boys and a girl who go to Egypt through a book that one of the boys uncles gave him. They have to travel through Egypt and find the book to get back home and meet a little challenge along the way named Hatsnat. I liked this book because we had just learned about Egypt so that made it better to understand.
The Excititng Mystery.......2003-02-04
This book is exciting. You always want to turn the page. It is funny and interesting. It takes place in ancient Egypt. In Tut Tut there is a girl named Annie. She is 6 and two brothers. I would tell you to read it.The name is Tut Tut.
The best book ever.......2002-12-17
I give this book five stars because it is very funny. It is also adveturous. The characters in this story (Joe, Fred, Sam) get in a lot of trouble and Sam almost gets eaten by a crocodile. I don't want to say more because I want you to read it for your self. I don't want to spoil the surprise.
What a book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-11-22

THE MOST FANTASTIC BOOK YOU'LL EVER READ!!!!!!.......2004-04-25
It all starts out with someone I really would call a "Not so Jolly Roger." They have pistols, daggars and lots of cool weapons in this book. (Violent). Something always goes wrong-wich always happens in books-of course. Get this book or I'll be "The not so Jolly Roger."
The not so Jolly Roger.......2003-05-02
I liked The not so Jolly Roger becuase it was a mystery and I love myseries. My favorite part was when Fred was reading a book and Fred got sucked into one of the pages. The not so Jolly roger could be better by taking out the part when a pirate shoots his mates after they got done buring the treasure they found. Iread the story becuase in the first book of the series, it was really interesting,so it made me think The not so Jolly Roger was going to be interesting.

"Buy it"!.......2003-04-03
I really like the Time Warp Trio series. My Grandma Kathy gave me books #1 through #10 for my birthday. So far, they have been very interesting and FUN to read! I am hoping that my younger brother and sister will enjoy them as much as I do.
The Not So Jolly Roger.......2002-10-29
We think the book, the Time Warp Trio The Not So Jolly Roger is funny and packed with adventure. In this story the three boys Joe,Fred, and Sam go in the magic book in the time of Black Beard the pirate. In the beginning they see a ship with three big cannons aimed right at them. The boys hurry up and climb coconut trees to escape. From the top they spy Black Beard on the ship.Trying to get down, they get stuck in the trees. After they get down from the trees, the three boys see Black Beard and his treasure. Two of the pirates were going to take it, but Black Beard saw them and shot them. Black Beard then thought the trio were going to try and steal his treasure.
Will the boys ever find the book and get home? If you want to find out, read this book.

A minor masterpiece........2007-05-25
I first read these books shortly after they were published. Now, decades later, I've read them again. They are every bit as good as I remember. Maybe better. They roar and flash and crash along like cars in a rickety old roller coaster, the kind you ride on a dare and keep expecting to derail at any moment. The test of any novel is whether the characters seem to go on living when you shut the book. The characters in these novels are life-size technicolor 3D walking talking people, some of whom you wouldn't want to meet in a dark bar. But after you've read this book you'll find yourself looking for them when you go out at night.
Depression era Albany comes alive in three stunning novels. .......2005-08-09
In the author's "Prelude in a Saloon," published as the preface of this trilogy, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist William Kennedy portrays himself as Daniel Quinn, nephew of Billy Phelan (of Billy Phelan's Greatest Game) and grandson of Francis Phelan (of Ironweed), as he begins an interview with an old gangster who worked closely with Jack "Legs" Diamond (of Legs). With tongue-in-cheek humor, Quinn/Kennedy reveals how his writing career began and how he came to know the main characters of this trio of books set in Depression-era Albany, New York.
Legs, set in 1930 - 1931, is a fictional biography of Jack "Legs" Diamond, thief/bootlegger/murderer, a man who lived the high life and who double-crossed and cheated his way to success, controlling speakeasies, illegal alcohol, real estate, and gambling, a man who survived eleven bullets in three separate assassination attempts before finally being brought down. An uncomplicated but well-written and often violent novel, Legs sets the scene for Billy Phelan's Greatest Game and Ironweed, both set in 1938. (4 stars)
Billy Phelan's Greatest Game is far more sophisticated, with more fully drawn characters, well-developed suspense, and themes dealing with fathers and sons and their values--intergenerational problems which reveal the changing morality of Depression-era Albany. Billy Phelan, part-time bookie and small-time card player and gambler is asked to monitor the activities of one of his fellow-card players, suspected of involvement in the kidnapping of Charlie MacCall, son and nephew of the two men running the political machine of Albany. Remaining true to his own values, Billy is surprised when his father Francis Phelan, who has just reappeared after abandoning the family twenty-two years before, suggests cooperating. (5 stars)
Ironweed is the Pulitzer-Prize-winning culmination of the trio, the story of Francis Phelan, an emotionally gripping novel about down-and-out "bums" and the people with whom they come into contact, which tears at the heart without being sentimental. Hard-edged and sometimes violent, this novel is a fully developed, moving, and insightful look at those who live apart from society because their dreams have died. (5 BIG stars)
Fully absorbing, whether you are just looking for good reading or are a student of writing, these three novels include many overlapping characters and a clear sense of time, place, and society. They are exciting and filled with important observations about life without being moralistic, and the dialogue and level of detail are often breath-taking. They are also an opportunity to see in successive novels, the development of one of the great writing talents of the twentieth century, with each novel more complex and fully developed than the previous one. Outstanding! n Mary Whipple
Where the Albany Cycle all began.......2002-07-16
I've read these three novels separately over the years and was happy to see them all neatly packaged in one volume. I couldn't resist the temptation. I hope a second volume which includes the next 3 novels will be out soon.
Kennedy is the Faulkner of Albany. His wonderful set of characters, rich language and compelling story line will endear most anyone to this family saga of growing up in Depression-era Albany. Kennedy focuses on those little items that give the city its richness, and his characters have that sense of noble purpose which carries them through such hard times.
The best literature has to offer........1999-12-17
Read these books and learn about life, love, and loss. Everything you need to know about everything is written right here. Read Kennedy and become enlightened. This is the best literature has to offer.

Book Description
One minute Joe, Sam, and Fred are shooting hoops in Brooklyn; the next they're on a court that is definitely not in New York, and surrounded by a bunch of players wearing feathered headdresses and not much else. And the other team is saying something about losers being the next blood sacrifices. Uh-oh. Tossed back in time to Chichn Itz, Mexico, in the year A.D. 1000, the Time Warp Trio is at it again. But can the guys score and find The Book before the Mayan High Priest and his team force them into "sudden death" overtime?

Insubstantial.......2006-12-26
This book was entertaining. My six-year-old listened to it avidly and thought it was funny. We read it as part of our homeschool unit on the Maya people. It did present some history, but I felt that the irreverant and flippant tone of most of the book was disrespectful and unnecessary (e.g. the character named "Kakapupuhed"). The author seems to have the perspective that history is boring and needs to be made more interesting so that children will find it appealing. It was fun and it was funny, but I didn't think it was worthwhile for building his character or his understanding of history or other cultures.

Time Warp Trio
Me oh Maya
I read the Time Warp Trio: Me oh Maya. It was a good book. My favorite part was when they played basketball. My least favorite part was when they went back in time because it wasn't really that exciting. This is a great book for people who like short books. I think that the book was okay, but it could be better.
The time warp tros adventures.......2006-11-16
Have you ever had a book that can bring you back in the past to 1000A.D? Well Fred, Sam, and Joe had one because they are the Time Warp Trio. They got there hands on this book by their uncle and ever since their life was miserable. This book is called Me Oh Maya, by Jon Scezka. It all takes place in the court yard.
One day Fred, Sam, and Joe were playing Horse on the Basketball court. When Sam was writing the score in Mayan numbers all of a sudden green mist started to gather up like fog. Before they knew it they were warping back to the year 1000A.D. When they arrived they were in a town called Chichen Itza. In Chichen Itza they had to find the book that brought them there. When they were looking they encountered a Mayan basketball court. Fred started showing the town's people how good he was in basketball. When Fred made a shot with a technique they never saw before they all went wild and they worshiped them. The king found out that they were getting worshiped so he brought them to the palace. The king tied them up to a tree to feed them to the jaguar because he thought that they were getting powerful. When they were tied up to the tree they saw black eyes. All of a sudden a boy jumped out of the bushes and untied him. The boy's name was Jun. He was one of the cheering fans when Fred made the shot. He untied them and he brought them to his house. When they got there they made a plan to get rid of the king because he was a horrible king. Jun's mom made a plan to play a basketball game with him because the mom knew that he was terrible at it. The next day it was time to play basketball. Read this book to find out what happened next.
I recommend this book to all the book lovers in the world. I can relate to this because I have two siblings and including me that makes three. We had wild adventures and we don't have to go back in to time to have those adventures. When you read this book I think that you are going to be thrilled. The fun doesn't stop when you're done reading one of their books; there is a series of these books are called the Time Warp Trio. They are easy to read so anyone can read them. When I read this book I had fun. It is funny how they get threw things like playing basketball games to rule a whole city. If I enjoyed it, I think you will enjoy it too.

Menotti is best known for his operas, but he has written some wonderful chamber music, among which this piece deserves special notice. It was composed for and has been recorded by the Verdehr Trio as part of their "Making of a Medium" project.
