5 out of 5 stars Who Is Doctor Gachet?.......2007-09-22

That is the question that Ned Kelly needs answered when a planned burglary goes all wrong and Ned's partners in crime (4 life long friends) get murdered execution style. To makes matters worse, a mystery lady that Ned has just left minutes before committing the burglary is also killed on the same night as his friends. As his world comes crashing down, Ned Kelly is on the run. On his trail cute FBI agent Ellie and the elusive Dr. Gachet. But who is Dr. Gachet? Is it his own father, an ex-criminal who can't seem to stay out of jail? Or is the ruthless millionaire Dennis Stanton who may have planned the burglary in his own home and who was also having an affair with Tess, Ned's mysterious lady. As with all of Patterson's book, you will be confronted with many suspects and many twist and turns. You will eagerly race to the end thinking that you have it all figured out and that is when Patterson throws you for a loop. Whatta ride!!!

4 out of 5 stars "What good is a lifeguard, who can't save lives?".......2007-09-01

Everything seems to be going great for Ned. He has found Tess, a wonderful woman, who not only is funny and lovely, but also rich. He and his friends have set up the perfect score, which will leave each of them with a million to spend any way they wish. Therefore, there will be no more lifeguard duty for Ned. But as is usually the case, things go wrong in a jiffy. The paintings Ned and his friends were supposed to steal were not there, and it smells like a setup. To make matters worse, Ned's friends and Tess are murdered and he finds himself running from the FBI and the police with a big target on his back.

On the other side of the fence, we find Ellie Shurtleff, a member of the FBI art squad who gets involved in the case and has her interest piqued by Ned and his story. Will she try to help him, or will she follow protocol and proceed with the investigation as planned? This establishes the setting for a fast-paced manhunt throughout the Eastern seaboard, with Ned trying to find out the truth behind what happened and use that to prove his innocence.

Lately it has been somewhat of a gamble with Patterson's books. Some have been good and others flat out disappointing. Luckily, in this case, the final product hits the spot, with an entertaining plot, that blends well the action with the personal relationships among the characters. It seems to me that the Gross-Patterson collaboration has worked well in most cases, so this may be a hint as to the quality of future efforts by these two authors.

Book Description

A rollicking memoir by one of the greatest (and most outrageous) supermodels of the 1970s.

Janice Dickinson was not only the first of the supermodels, she endured a nightmarishly traumatic childhood at the hands of a sadistic, sexually and emotionally abusive father, and emerged in the early 1970s as the first lush–lipped 'exotic' brunette to break into a modelling world dominated by sunny California blondes.

Janice owned the modelling world in the 1970s. Animated by a fierce desire to be recognised, a fearless spirit, and an insatiable hunger for alcohol, cocaine, sex, and fun, Dickinson appeared on every magazine cover, worked with every major designer and photographer (from Calvin Klein and Gianni Versace to Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon), was married three times, and had passionate affairs or one–night stands with everyone from Warren Beatty to Jack Nicholson to Mick Jagger. Though her career waned in the 1990s, her dramatic life story did not: in recent years she has fought a hotly contested paternity suit with Sylvester Stallone, survived a near–fatal car wreck during a tequila/marijuana blackout in St Bart's, and waged a raging battle with alcohol and drug addiction.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Craptabulous!.......2007-08-24

So, I am a fan of crazy-gorgeous-extreme model types, because they are so much the opposite of me.

Take Janice Dickinson, for instance. Janice walks in a room, and everyone knows it. Maybe they smell her heady melange of booze, perfume, and cigarettes. It could be the obnoxiously loud string of foulness that always enters before she does. And perhaps it's because she's gorgeous and has those crazy -- as in substantially unstable -- eyes that demand attention in a Charlie Manson kind of way. I don't know. Whatever it is, I want it, as do millions of young ladies.

So I really wanted to like this book and experience a lot of "Oh no she di'int" admiration, but mostly, I was stumbling over the lackluster, disconnected writing. Does anyone believe celebrities of her caliber -- low, that is -- really write their own material? I suppose her "writing partner" is partially to blame for the poor quality, but having seen Dickinson in action (critiquing ANTM contestants and manipulating her way through the D-list dumpster that is The Surreal Life), I don't doubt for a second that she'd have creative control and final say on the content and style.

Janice does deliver some juicy bits. For example, way back when Sly Stallone was her man, Janice was regularly given mystery "vitamins" by the Rocky that, in light of recent events, may've been an early iteration of HGH. Hm. Plus there's tons of drugs and boyfriends (and girlfriends), although I could've done without the explicit descriptions of sex ham-fistedly sandwiched into random spots. (It's like she forgot she wasn't writing a Harlequin for a couple of pages.)

As in other memoirs by people who shouldn't necessarily be writing any, there's the usual childhood drama blown out of proportion. Being abused is drama enough -- why add the Lifetime Movie of the Week sentiment for fanfare? It feels a little... exploitative.

But I suppose that's the point. Dickinson made her career out of exploitation -- of her body, the camera, other people's bodies... you name it. I appreciate the candor she shows, and no-holds-barred "outing" of celeb secrets is balanced by kind words for others (for instance, Christie Brinkley is -- or at least was -- a saint). This could've been an excellent book if only she'd taken an intensive in English composition and pulled out a thesaurus. (At least it wasn't as bad as Iceberg Slim!)

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it.......2007-06-28

I thought this book was v interesting & honest...a true look into Janice's Dickinsons life. She is a strong character & has survived a hell of a childhood - now i now why she still acts kinda crazy when you see her on tv!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-06-27

This woman has balls. It is not a book written by someone who is afraid of looking bad, or offending people (I am looking at YOU Kimora Lee Simmons). Janice is one fierce b*tch. I must say she did start to get on my nerves after viewing her reality show, but if you are looking for a juicy book, get this one. You will be satisfied!

1 out of 5 stars This is a woman who needs professional help!.......2007-06-13

This is truly a sick (emotionally & maybe mentally) and delusional woman.

It's amazing to me that this sewer-mouthed narcisist got as far as she did.

This book is trash!

3 out of 5 stars no lifeguard on duty.......2007-05-24

this book is interesting when it talks about her life with family and friends but the rest of it is slow and boring i thought this was going to be great like her other book but its very boring and hard to keep reading,

    Book Description

Eddie Would Go is the only biography of one of Hawaii's greatest heroes. A shy and humble man by nature, Eddie Aikau became larger than life in the ocean. As a surfer, he rode the biggest waves in the world; as a lifeguard, he saved hundreds of lives from the North Shore's treacherous waters; and as a proud Hawaiian, he sacrificed his life to save his fellow sailors aboard the voyaging canoe Hokule'a. But more than a biography of a courageous waterman, Stuart Coleman's Eddie Would Go also tells the story of modern Hawaii and Eddie's role in the Hawaiian Renaissance during the 1970's. The book is based on numerous interviews with his family, friends and many of Hawaii's leading watermen and scholars. Coleman weaves together their memories in an exciting and informative story. By exploring his legendary life and legacy, this book will show why Eddie has become such an enduring icon in Hawaii and the surfing world.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Eddie Aikau, "Local Boy".......2007-01-04

I liked the commentary and collected anecdotes in the book. Eddie was the kind of guy that is typical of Hawaii. Holmes describes his character as self-effacing, humble, generous... always giving of himself to others. These are attributes which are valued in the local Hawaiian culture and also, universally. Sadly, the very things which locals in Hawaii value the most, are taken advantage of by outsiders looking to capitalize or commercialize the "Aloha," shown to them. This is demonstrated continually in the book.
Overall, a very interesting biography written with respect and conviction to the legacy that Eddie "lived" during his short life. Many details in the book encourage self-introspection within one's own life.

5 out of 5 stars A Book For All Soul Surfers.......2006-02-23

An intriguing tribute to hawaiian waterman Eddie Aikau, "Eddie Would Go" explores the life journey of a true native legend. From big-wave surfing, to saving countless lives as a lifeguard at Waimea Bay, Eddie epitomized the true essence of Hawaii and the spirit of "aloha." This book embraces the strong family connection that is so inherent in hawaiian culture, while focusing on the characteristics that made Eddie a local hero, a surfing icon and a dedicated waterman.

Author Stuart Holmes Coleman explores Eddie's lifelong connection to the ocean, while also giving a glimpe of life as it was and is on the ever famous North Shore. Always the adventurer, Eddie's passion for the water would bring him across infinite miles of ocean over the course of his lifetime, and in the end would serve appropriately as his eternal resting place. This book transcends all genders, ages, races, surfers and adventure seekers alike, a thrilling gem of a read for all. An epic tale, it will stir your emotions and touch your soul. Eddie was an inspiration to many and a friend to all, and his spirit lives on in this book just as it will forever in the ocean.

3 out of 5 stars A hero on many levels.......2005-12-05

This book is a true story with many messages. Eddie Aikau was a hero many times over, a warrior waterman. He was a hero to the many whose lives he saved. He was a hero to the Hawaiian culture. He was a hero to his crewmates on the Hokuleia.

He wasn't perfect, however. Author Stuart Coleman worked very hard to find the true Eddie, separating the man from the myth, the sinner from the saint.

If you like reading about surfing, the Hawaiian culture, and people who have influenced the reputation of the Hawaiian North Shore, this is the book. The photos are terrific, but the story is sad. I thank Coleman for pulling it all together.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read (even for us New Englanders).......2005-12-02

I had never heard of Eddie Aiku until 2 months ago when I went to Hawaii and read a sidebar about him in a "blue book." At first I thought "Eddie Would Go" was just a macho mentality and I thought I was going to read a story about someone daring and tough. After reading I know the meaning behind "Eddie would go" is so much deeper...

What a gripping tragic story of an incredible man. The book really captures the higlights and impact of Eddie's actions and does a good job of translating the emotions and feelings around the events that happened through interviews of people that were there and first-hand witnesses. Coleman often gives multiple viewpoints from multiple interviewees and it is interstesting to see the different interpretations of events.

If we all had the humilty, self-sacrifice and wisdom of Eddie Aikau we'd all be better off.

5 out of 5 stars Eddie Would Go .......2005-12-01

The book Eddie Would Go was a true story about the life of Hawaiian legend Eddie Aikua. The book tells the tale of his life and about Hawaiian culture. I liked this book a lot because it helped me imagine the Eddie Aikua who was around a couple decades ago and the story made me keep reading. It was exciting and had a lot of adventure in it. It doesn't compare to any other story I've read before, it was like a biography but also at times it was like a guidedbook to Hawaiian culture.

The things I disliked were when the author branched of to something boring or urelavent to Eddie's life. If I was to give it to someone, they would have to know a little about surfing in the early days and like lots of adventure and suspense. I would definetly recommend this book. It was one of the best books I've read so go get a copy and enjoy.

    Book Description

In her sharply observed and ultimately redemptive memoir, Catherine McCall paints a vivid and sometimes heartbreaking portrait of growing up in a complicated Southern family, whose perfect façade hides crippling imperfections.

There are two parents, three children, and five ghosts in the McCall family. With their preppie clothes and country-club smiles, the McCalls look like all the other East End Louisville families. No one knows there are problems, that an internal gash the size of the Ohio river is flooding the family. All Cathy and her siblings can do is promise to stick together no matter what—and swim.

But even though they are fast, the McCall kids can’t outdistance their father’s destructive habits and their mother’s worry. As her family reaches a breaking point and an unexpected love blooms, thirteen-year-old Cathy finds she must keep secrets of her own. Though the love in this family is strong, Cathy must discover if it’s tenacious enough to withstand the truth.

Candid, captivating, and infused with compassion, Lifeguarding affirms the flexible strength of love itself; how family bonds must often bend to the point of breaking . . . and beyond.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Courageous!.......2006-11-19

Treading water, deciding whether to sink or swim, Catherine McCall's "Lifeguarding" is a stunning memoir and well worth the read.
"Lifeguarding" is about a middle class family leading a country club life but what appears to be real is false. Her father, a mediocre insurance salesman, drowns himself in booze and debt. To keep their lives afloat, Catherine's mother gets a job teaching. As she hides their family secrets, Catherine hides one of her own . . .
    She is gay.
Catherine's struggle to understand her sexuality, her unconventional desires in a conventional time, makes "Lifeguarding" an unusual story. Her feelings and frustrations flow from pen to page. It is beautifully written, poignant and moving. Going into bars to remind her father to come home, or waiting for him to arrive for a day at the state fair, the reader is right there with the writer.
Catherine McCall takes us back to the agonies of adolescence, when life was supposedly simple. It reminds me of trying to win in the wrong lane. I'm happy to report . . . Catherine McCall is victorious!

    5 out of 5 stars More than a memoir.......2006-11-10

I thought i was burned out with memoirs and along comes "Lifeguarding." Congratuulations to Catherine McCall for an honest, truthful memoir written in a straightforward manner, without the strident, over-the-top, self-proclamation and heavy-handed confessionals that have dominated the genre. This story flows gently but strongly and is a blessed change from the norm in this genre. Read it!

    5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-08-27

I enjoyed reading the author's story and thought the writing was great. It really took me to the time and place. And very clever how she tied so much into water, emotions, etc. Hard to articulate my thought there, but it was brillant in places. Those that have read the book will know what I'm referring to. I will recommend this book to my book club. In reading the back flap about Ms. McCall, it appears she's settled and happy and that's nice to see.

5 out of 5 stars A new author with a tender, honest voice.......2006-08-22

This book stands a part from other family stories for me because of the author's ability to discuss her family's strengths AND shortcomings with such honesty and such tenderness. So often authors who share family stories are skilled at detailing either the tremendous adversity of their childhoods or the greatness of the characters they have known. McCall does an excellent job of sharing the simple humanity of her family members, making them real to the reader, not simply characters to admire or villianize. I also appreciated the honesty with which McCall shared her coming out process and the deep understanding she seems to have of the role of her partners and their importance to her life. A tender, meaningful, and enjoyable read.

    5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2006-08-08

Wow! I bought this book to read while I was traveling but got roped in and finished the book before my travels even really got under way -- each chapter leaving me curious to what came next. I read deep into the night (although I should have been packing and cleaning) and then finished it waiting for the first leg of my trip the next morning. I thought the book was a courageous, compelling telling of one family's story. While I didn't have the same experiences as the author, she did an excellent job of putting enough detail on different levels that I am sure many readers, like myself, will be able to connect with the story and the struggles. Silly superficial things like the gold shell/bear/lion belt buckles, oversized glasses, and three musketeers bars at the pool snack bar made me smile and transported me back to those days. Other things like her sister being the bossy big sis made me cringe --that was my role in life. Her various descriptions of living in her household brought tears to my eyes because to a certain degree, that was my life.

I read a lot of books about families and family dynamics (both fiction and non-fiction) and usually walk away with some new understanding or lesson. After finishing this book, I found it hard to get into the next two books (both fiction, and both very good books -- Memory Keeper's Daughter and Vanishing Acts). I guess life can be stranger (and much more powerful) than fiction! I thought Lifeguarding was terrific!

I am an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor. Having used the old text, "Lifeguarding Today," I was somewhat disappointed in the way that many valuable skills had been cut from the new program. Nevertheless, this is still the best lifeguarding program around, and with new modules coming out all the time, the American Red Cross is sure to make up for the skills that they've removed from the new program. 5 out of 5 stars The United States Lifesaving Association Manual of Open Wate.......1999-12-09

The United States Manual of Open Water Lifesaving is a required text for training all of our seasonal ocean lifeguards. As an Operations Lieutenant for the City of Newport Beach the book has been an invaluable reference with general information, concepts and specific procedural techniques. There are photographs that depict various aspects of modern lifesaving and example report forms. A lifeguard agency or public safety agency that engages in open water rescue is remiss in not having this book for their students and as a reference. Renowned lifeguard experts from around the United States contributed to this excellent book. The book could also have significant impact internationally if a beach had to start a lifguard agency where one does not exist today. If one wants to become a lifeguard, this is a must have text. I am glad that this book exists and am hoping for a new edition that will be even better. Buy it today, you can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars USLA Manual Used in Hawaii.......1999-11-30

The USLA Manual of Open Water Lifesaving edited by Chris Brewster is the basic textbook used in the training programs for the following agencies in the State of Hawaii: Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division, City and County of Honolulu, Aquatics Division, County of Maui, Water Safety Section, County of Kauai, and the Aquatics Division, County of Hawaii. These agencies are responsible for providing ocean lifeguard services for their respective counties (each Hawaiian Island is considered a county, with Maui County including Molokai and Lanai and Kauai County including the island of Niihau.) All of the mentioned agencies are certified by the USLA under the Agency Certification Program. The USLA Manual of Open Water Lifesaving is the only manual of its kind that addresses the ocean/open water environment and the skills and knowledge essential to become an open water lifeguard. The manual is the result of the collaboration of lifeguards from across the country and provides historical as well as up to date information on open water lifeguarding. Descriptions of environmental conditions that the beach lifeguard will encounter and methods of dealing with these conditions are included in the text, as well as excellent chapters on drowning, prevention, rescues and equipment, and emergency medical treatment. An appendix which includes sample forms used by lifeguard agencies is also a valuable resource for those who administer lifeguard services. The textbook is well written, clearly organized, and serves as the fundamental resource for our agencies in the Hawaiian Islands.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2003-02-28

This was an interesting book, from the cover and title I thought that the book would deal more with lifeguarding. I am an Aquatics Manager and have been in aquatics for 10yrs. I found the book itself very interesting. It is a book that should be read by many more people.

      5 out of 5 stars An excellent short-story collection.......1999-12-25

Contrary to the pretentious New York Times review that's quoted above, this is a very moving, very artful collection of short stories. Morris is able, without irony or gimmickry, to sweep the reader into the tales of her protagonists. What most of these stories deal with are the subtle transformations that occur in people as events and time impact them. She doesn't spell out the way her tales resolve themselves because she doesn't have to; her characters own actions (or, in some cases, inactions) make the conclusions very apparent to the reader even when nothing is bluntly stated. Mary Morris is a fine teller of stories and this collection is worth reading cover to cover.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2000-08-26

The first Lifeguards mini-series was good, and so was the first book of this mini-series. But this was just full of crazy and unbelievable things just to make the plot more intresting, though it in fact makes it boring. All the characters were nothing like themselves, except for Elizabeth, Jessica and Ryan who together make the only good plot in this book. This book and the next one feel as if the other sub-plots are just there to make the book longer, especially the plot with Stu and Nina, which is just too weird. The only realistic plot is the one with Ryan, Jessica and Elizabeth. If you liked the first book in this trilogy, prepare to be disappointed with this one.

      5 out of 5 stars Summer Trials.......2000-03-26

Ryan has always prided himself on being in control- after all, who wants to remember the day he was unable to save a little girl because he was too drunk. He sees his AA sponsor drinking though, and when Elizabeth does not show up to celebrate his one year of soberity, will it cause him to fall back to his old ways? Meanwhile, Jess has given up on Ben- who wants to spend the summer talking about books? Her new man causes many raised eyebrows, hurt feelings and could cost her life! Nina finds out that Stu had a fling with one of her enemies- will she still stay with him?
