5 out of 5 stars Papers Please!.......2007-04-11

This product is invaluable to the re-enactor, which I am one. When presenting things as they were, the correct documents are absolutely necessary. I must add that it could be a little more "photo friendly" when it comes to the "overall" documents, but, that is counting stitches.
An absolute MUST for historical libraries!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for historians or collectors.......2006-12-18

This is a great book for collectors or historians interested in the Third Reich era. This book delivers an interesting look into the everyday life of citizens of Germany during the Nazi regime. It also shows how well the German government controlled the comings and goings of citizens and those who are not citizens. I only with our country would put some of these practices into effect to help eliminate the illegal alien problem we have. It was almost impossible for someone to sneak into Germany that didn't belong there, as the introduction states. All the old WW II movies showing spies with fake German documents was hollywood fiction. Great book, get it.

5 out of 5 stars A reenactor's must have!.......2004-04-13

Not only is this book a must for every reenactor (usually required to have reproduction documents), this book should be required reading for anyone interested in how the German people were well organized during WWII. Plenty of color photos of documents and detailed line-by-line descriptions. This book will also give an idea of daily life in Germany and the strict control placed on the civilian population as well. If you ever run across an old German document at a flea market or an auction... or if you are a WWII German reenactor, this book will provide plenty of information. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars The best resource available right now..........2003-09-11

This book started me on the road to collecting these types of documents and now I can't stop. Before you go and buy your first soldbuch, or whatever, get this book so you know what you're looking at. Absolutely great descriptions, pictures, charts, etc...

5 out of 5 stars Old Brandy.......1999-11-23

This study of the arcane field of identification documents in the Third Reich is a remarkably solid and detailed contribution to its subject. The book is produced on photographic plate paper and the illustrations of the various examples-the German Army Soldbuecher, the Wehrmacht Drivers' Licenses, the Arbeitsbuecher (Employment Idenfication Documents), the Hunting Permits, the members-artists, actors, composers, puppeteers! of the Reichskulturkammer, the German Red Cross IDs-are lavishly illustrated and expertly glossed and elucidated. One example concerns the Soldbuch of which the joint authors, Ray and Josephine Cowdery, write as follows: "While American and English speakers would probably assume a `Soldbuch' to be a `pay book' in which a solder's monthly pay was recorded, the name Soldbuch in German is applied to the authority itself; in other words, the holder of a Soldbuch had the authority to draw pay. Little or no `pay' was ever recorded in it in most cases." The authors travelled in the old German Democratic Republic, observed that every time they "crossed the border we entered a perceptible time warp in identity documentation. The East German police were operating their border crossing stations according to policies and procedures that had been established during the Third Reich." Highly recommended for the buff, the collector, and all those with a taste for what C.P. Snow once termed "old brandy"-the rare, the off-beat and the esoteric.

Book Description

The crime of the twenty-first century doesn't discriminate: ID theft has hit ordinary citizens and celebrities alike, from Oprah Winfrey to Steven Spielberg, and costs the economy $50 billion a year. Your Evil Twin covers this exploding crime from every possible angle. It includes exclusive whodunit details from mastermind identity thieves who have pilfered money from half the members of the Forbes 400, as well as exclusive interviews with a myriad of criminals in the Internet's underground, such as Russian hackers who have extorted money from U.S. banks. The book also issues a scathing indictment of the credit granting industry, from credit card issuers to the secretive credit reporting agencies, who have misunderstood the crime from the start, have been slow to respond, and bear much of the responsibility for the epidemic. Finally, Bob Sullivan, author and identity theft expert, probes the tepid solutions now being cobbled together by the industry and government.
Bob Sullivan (Snohomish, WA), senior technology writer for MSNBC.com, is the nation's leading journalist covering identity fraud. He has written more than 100 articles on the subject since 1996, and is a regular contributor to MSNBC, CNBC, NBC Nightly News, the Today show, and various local NBC affiliates. With colleague Mike Brunker, Sullivan received the prestigious 2002 Society of Professional Journalists Public Service Award for ongoing coverage of Internet fraud.

4 out of 5 stars Humanizing Identity Theft.......2005-09-07

Much has been written about identity theft, and what people have to go through to clear their credit reports. But what I had never given much thought to is that identity theft goes much beyond stealing identities for financial gain. In fact, what is much more difficult to deal with is when your identity is stolen and used by criminals in general. Try to clear a supposed criminal record. And if you are in the United States, try to do that if you are black or Hispanic. That is just part of the excellent discussions you will find in Bob Sullivan's Your Evil Twin: Behind the Identity Theft Epidemic (August 2004, John Wiley & Sons, 314 Pages, ISBN 0471648108).

A journalist by training, Sullivan presents an easy to read, if unsettling, narrative talking about different aspects of identity theft that do not often get discussed. Some of the material is material found in magazines and other journals, but the strength of this book is that it beings many different pieces into one place. Sullivan starts out by showing that no one is immune to identity theft, whether it be a CEO or even Eldrick "Tiger" Woods. He goes into some detail explaining who was taken advantage of and how, though he does not offer solutions for the problems.

But this does not mean he is afraid to take on the real villains in identity theft, the credit card companies and retailers who push easy credit every chance they get. Sullivan makes the excellent point that the availability of easy credit is actually better for the bad guys than those who do the right thing. He also does not shy away from calling out the credit reporting agencies and their role in this problem. Why should they be charging people for "Credit report watches", when they helped create the problem? It was fascinating from a historical perspective to read how the three major credit reporting companies came to be. It is a heck of a trivia question to ask how a railroad fits into the scheme of things.

You will, or at least should, find yourself challenged by the reality that the race factor plays in how victims are treated. Like it or not, we live in two Americas as clearly shown in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Discussions of this topic in the book really offer a time for reflection and thought in the area of identity theft.

One should not expect this book to answer every possible question about identity theft, but should be considered as part of a larger library on data privacy and identity theft. It provides a human perspective that other titles on the subject often lack.

Who Should Read This Book?

This book, while not a "must read" would be of interest to people who want to explore more of the human side of identity theft and would like some additional historical/political perspective.

2 out of 5 stars This could have been so much better.......2004-11-12

To begin with, I was terribly distracted by all the typographical/spelling and editing errors that ran rampant in this book. Why would anyone put a book out for sale that hasn't been proofread?

But most of all, this book covers an extremely important subject, one of potential interest to just about everyone, and yet it was so shallow. I have been better informed about identity theft, what it is, what is being done about it, and what we can do if we are targeted as victims in local newspapers and in magazine articles. There was no discussion of many very common methods of identity theft, including observation of victims as they enter their ATM or telephone pin numbers and codes, inadvertantly leaving passwords and usernames on public computers, giving credit card numbers to untrustworthy websites, using credit cards in untrustworthy restaurants and stores, writing passwords in places others can easily access, being victimized by phishing schemes, etc. Each of these and many more are methods of identity theft easily avoided yet this book doesn't mention them.

Even the anecdotes left me hanging for more detail, more of what happened and why. Instead, they rambled on disconnectedly and often had no beginnings nor conclusions. The organization of the book was sub-par, which accounted for much unnecessary repetition of minor details. This book simply screams for a better editor.

5 out of 5 stars Almost Like a good mystery book, but real.......2004-09-18

This book is all about a problem that simply didn't exist only a few years ago. Now it's become the fastest growing white collar crime in America. It strikes in every community from the smallest to the largest. The crime is profitable, nearly unpreventable, and hardly ever prosecuted (by one estimate only one out of every 700 incidents). It's the down side of the information super highway. Getting a bit of information about a person is easy, and then you can get a bit more. Soon you can buy a car in his name, get credit cards in his name, like the TV commercial, you're on the beach, your credit cards are in the airplane flying by.

The book says, rightfully I believe, that you are basically on your own. The police don't seem to care, the credit card companies write off the loss and go on about their business. Just don't you try to ever use your credit again.

The author is a leading expert on the subject, as well as being a senior writer at MSNBC. He knows how to write and he knows his subject, what more can you ask.

4 out of 5 stars The risk is very real!.......2004-09-16

Ignorance is not bliss - it only gives more time for identity thieves to ruin your life. I already own a shredder, to indulge my paranoia of having credit card applications and other personal information easily available to those with sinister intentions. This book confirms the need for the paranoia, but also points out how little control I have over "keeping" my own identity. This is a page-turner, flavored with stories of real people who have experienced identity theft, making it a very interesting read. This issue is huge, much more than someone trying to run up some charges on a credit card I have in my wallet. And what I found particularly shocking was how unwilling different institutions are to come up with solutions.

5 out of 5 stars A Home Security System .......2005-06-19

This is not the feel good book of the summer, it almost scares the pants off of you given the many different ways faceless criminals can rudely interrupt your life with identity theft. This book details out many of the identity theft scams that are prevalent today. It shows you, maybe in a way that is a touch over the top, just how vulnerable you are. On the positive side it also gives you the tools to fight back and the steps you can take to protect yourself. It also instructs you on what you can do if you become an identity theft victim. The book details out how the world of credit operates and your rights and responsibilities.

The current world we live in enables us to be discriminated against in the credit world because of our age, gender or marital status. The privacy of our financial information may be compromised and is so widely disseminated that it is making it more and more vulnerable to identity theft all the time. That is why this book is important, it gives the reader some tools to help us remain safe or at least less vulnerable. Overall the author gives the reader a number of useful and well described tips for how to keep as safe as possible and how to fix problems if they come up. It is a bit on the dramatic side, but if you are a victim of this type of crime then the descriptions are probably right on the mark.

I bought this book after seeing the author on Montel Williams and hearing people tell of their identity theft stories. Some of which are still fighting to get their good name back. This book has every step you need including pre-written letters to everyone you need to get in contact with if this crime should happen to you. It really is a step by step manual to taking back your identity and stoping the financial turmoil that can ruin your life. A must for every household...

Along with the book Safeguard Your Identity, this book helps to deal with the theft of one's Identity and the importance of knowledge in this field, even if it hasn't happen to you (yet).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide during a harrowing time.......2007-01-05

Like many, I though it could never happen to me -- But it did. Both me and my wife had our ID stolen! Within 24 hours, there were more than 20 fraudulent applications to credit granters, not to mention the fraudulent use of my credit and debit cards. It was scary. I needed help. I got this book.

Ms. Frank takes the perfect tone: it happened, now let's fix it. The step by step directions are clear. She takes you through the process in sequence, telling you how to deal with situations as they come up. The CD is probably worth at least as much as the book. It contains letter templates written by an attorney (Frank) that cover just about every situation. It is just a matter of cut and paste for your personal information and situation.

We are lucky, this invasion has not cost us any more than the purchase price of this guide. The steps taken have (so far) successfully proven our innocence with every creditor we have dealt with. Although I have taken a great deal of time trying to fix this mess, I could not imagine how much more time I would have taken if the letters were not already written for me.

This book tells it like it is but it also makes clear that there is a solution if you have the patience. Knowing what I know now, I could not have gotten this far without this guide.

I bought this Identity Theft Set for my father after a law firm threatened to sue him for credit card fees that he did not accrue. He has not heard one more peep from them after we started shooting out the very professional legal letters that Mari Frank Esq. supplied. Buy this set and save yourself thousands in legal fees. I swear it works.

      Book Description

Playing the Race Card reflects and engages the dynamic nature of racialized experience in Western contexts. It examines today's anti-racism project to discern how it might benefit from integrating strategies that work toward the development of critical consciousness as its main goal. So that the privileged and the oppressed alike may reflexively examine their own subject positions, this book identifies and addresses the need to develop a working model for anti-racism strategies. Given the need to understand and move beyond static conceptions of race and racism, Playing the Race Card offers both a critique of mainstream/privileged perceptions of racial oppression, as well as a direction forward within a more "organic"approach to social reform.

      1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2005-07-14

Out of date. Will land you in jail. Impractical. If you want to forge an identity this book will tell you to do so without telling you how. Check out Bulletproof Privacy if you want privacy.

      5 out of 5 stars VERY good!.......2003-03-14

Many "Identity changing books" use outdated methods that no longer work in today's computer driven society. They also don't seem to tell you the rest of the identity story... this book uses up to date information and exposes MANY secrets, pit falls, and faulty information that other books don't touch.

So you know how to get an Alternate ID? Great, do you know the other stuff that sends up red flags to companies when you present this ID? Mr. Charrett does! AND he tells you what those flags are and how to avoid them. He walks you through it, he adds the "trivia" to "flesh out" your alternate ID that many people forget.

Sheldon's obviously "been there, done that"... of course, who knows who he was when he did? This is an EXCELLENT ID resource! One that could be very valuable in light of all the Gov intrusions into our Constitutionally protected privacy rights.

      1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2003-01-11

When I got this book, I really had high hopes and within the week I got it, I had read it entirely. I then re-read it because I couldn't believe that there was so little usefull information contained in the pages. Surely I had to be missing something. But alas, I was not, there simply was no substance in the book. The only thing I got out of this book is that I learned a little more about the social security number and how it is made up, but even that takes up very little space, and really isn't worth the price of the book alone. As for walking me through what I can do to change my identity, the author is maddenling vague and not at all detail oriented. Sorry to dis your book Sheldon, I really am, but the bottom line is, your money can be better spent somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Best on the subject.......2002-03-31

I thought the book was the best I've read so far on this subject. Can't help but notice one of the reviews below is the EXACT same text in reveiws on similar books. Seems like a disgruntled person (author?) and I thought this needed to be pointed out in order for readers to make a fair assessment.

3 out of 5 stars Accurate for today?.......2002-03-05

This book gives you a lot of information and some pitfalls to avoid. Perhaps the best piece of advice it gave was regarding the Social Security number was that the first three digits relates to the state in which you "entered" the Social Security system and the second two digits relates to a certain year (or years). It helps you avoid the pitfalls of being "caught" should someone have access to the necessary info.

However, what this book does not take into account is the advances in technology in terms of linking birth and death certificates in order to cut down on such things. The book offers suggestions which would take quite a bit of legwork and involve more people than necessary should you think about attempting such a feat.

      Book Description

Cards of Identity is a scathing satire of psychology, identity theory, and class prejudice. The plot centers on an annual meeting of the Identity Club, a group of psychologists who come together to present "case histories" promoting their chosen theory of identity. These case studies (three of which are presented in the novel) are not scientific treatises, but fictional representations of character in line with the author's biases. In fact, members of the Club aren't allowed to interact with actual patients when creating their stories. Surrounding this meeting is the equally bizarre story of the local townspeople, who are brainwashed and transformed into servants for the convention, and who end the book with a show-stopping, Shakespearian play.

I don't know how I originally came across Card of Identity about 15 years ago, but I couldn't put it down and have read it three times. It's an enchanting novel and I'd hate for anyone to pass it by based on the rather incomprehensible reviews I've read of it on this site.

1 out of 5 stars Ignore This Novel -- Read Something Imbued with Sensitivity.......2003-06-21

Cardboard characters, creepy cutouts--didn't believe a word by this facile film critic. Born Again a Holy Cow--ought to be illegal suggesting a sinister application. Identity not trowelled up like leeks. Take exception, award a sprig of spring onion found caught in laces of boot, press it in pages, ward off wards and weak wights.

Spirit informs like a gold glow, never interchangeable like multi-colored lights on a string. Seditious suggestion. Networks must be informed. Anchors enlisted. Nudes draped.

5 out of 5 stars Strongest Possible in Genre.......2001-03-10

Waugh, Burgess but best also "Cards." Late Burgess left this out of his 100 list, and I had not yet read it when I discussed sustained narrative antic novels with him. This puzzles me. (I argued for Gravity, he plumped for V. Later in 100, he'd changed to Gravity. Egoist that I am, guess what I think. And, also, now I like V. Did he age well tho?)

Pungent, perhaps profound. Some peerless moments of exquisite conundrum. Disciplined prose, strongly flavored character motion, level evocation of REM unreality.

Inspiring. Worth writing tart poetry on its flyleaf. Don't not read now!

5 out of 5 stars Best unknown novel of all time.......1998-02-17

Actually Cards of Indentity is four books and a play. The "plot" involves a group of "psychologists" who take over a country home by mental tricks in order to hold a convention. Three of the books are 'papers' delivered at the convention. The play (which you will swear was written by Shakespeare) is the entertainment at the end of the convention. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars Nigel Dennis's "Cards of Identity," a forgotten classic.......1998-02-12

It is an incredible feeling to come across a novel that has no fame or recognition yet is as genius as the great classics. Cards of Identity- is such a novel. It's brilliant satire makes it absence all the more unfortunate.

      5 out of 5 stars Now I get it........2000-02-21

ID/Privacy books generally raise more questions than they answer. This book answers all those questions raised by other ID/Privacy books.

My only complaint is that the author tells TOO much about how to get birth certificates and fake drivers' licenses. I'm concerned that this will alert authorities to the loopholes.

But there is also a lot of good information about how Big Brother is spinning out of control. A real eye-opener.

All in all, a masterful work.

5 out of 5 stars Big Brother part is scary. Great ID section!.......2000-01-31

Wow, I have to say that the Big Brother images scared me -- even more than Orwell's 1984 -- because this time they were REAL.

Thank God there is a New Resistance. If they (we?) use the tools the author suggests, we might just be able to save our privacy.

The IDs looked too real to be legal, but I guess drastic measures are called for. Overall, the book is great. No double-spacing, no filler. All pages literally packed with info. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Covers all the bases; very informative.......2000-01-31

Mr. Charrett's privacy solutions range from harmless to felonious. I think a book that explores such an important topic should include legal solutions to gaining privacy as well as illegal solutions. In my opinion, this book covers it all. A reader could not really ask for more than that.

1 out of 5 stars Identity, Privacy, and Personal Freedom.......1999-12-30

The book clearly provide instructions how to lie and become the criminal in order to preserve the privacy ( by home-manufacturing of the false documents and fraudulent presentations of it for any purpose). I still not sure if this is only way for privacy-protection...
