Roses Are Red, James Patterson's sixth Alex Cross thriller, opens with the District of Columbia detective attempting to mend his nearly unraveled family. The year-long kidnapping of one's intended (1999's Pop Goes the Weasel) will do that to a relationship. Christine, the kidnappee, is amenable with one reasonable condition: that her family's horizon remain uncluttered by homicidal maniacs. How unfortunate, then, that the joyous christening of their newborn son is rudely interrupted by the FBI bearing news of several heinous murders requiring the attention of detective (and doctor of psychology) Cross.
"Three-year-old boy, the father, a nanny," Kyle said one more time before he left the party. He was about to go through the door in the sun porch when he turned to me and said, "You're the right person for this. They murdered a family, Alex."
As soon as Kyle was gone, I went looking for Christine. My heart sank. She had taken Alex and left without saying good-bye, without a single word.
Which leaves Cross free to hunt the Mastermind, the barbarous brains behind a widening series of bank robberies in which employees or their family members are held hostage and, when instructions aren't followed to the finest iota, slaughtered. Given the cases' glaring and unfathomable inhumanity, Cross's long- time DCPD partner (the wonderful giant, John Sampson) gives way to the warm, attractive, and fiercely intelligent FBI Agent Betsey Cavalierre.
The longer and harder Cross and Cavalierre remain on his trail, the bolder and more brutal--and shiveringly close to home--the Mastermind's strikes become. And, thanks mostly to lightning-short paragraphs and a point of view that rappels from the first-person Cross to the third-person Mastermind, the tale progresses at hot-trot speed to a bona fide doozy of a denouement. It'll be over before you know it, so sit back, hold your breath, and enjoy the show. And stay tuned for the next one. --Michael Hudson

A brilliant criminal known only as the Mastermind orchestrates a series of bank robberies that are notable for their very precise demands--and their explosive violence when the demands are not met exactly. Detective Alex Cross takes on the case and recognizes that a particular kind of criminal mind is at work. But before he gets near identifying a suspect, the Mastermind pulls off the most outrageous kidnapping scheme in US history--and walks away with the largest ransom ever paid. But the money is not enough. Alex Cross's investigation has gotten under the Mastermind's skin, and he makes it his personal goal to take revenge on Cross's entire team, one person at a time--before coming after Cross himself. Amidst all this, Cross's relationship with his girlfriend Christine is falling apart because of her fears about his work, and his beloved daughter Jannie is hospitalized with unexplained seizures. The pressure rises on every front until an explosive, shocking climax in which the Mastermind escalates his crimes to an unprecedented level, and Alex Cross risks everything to stop him in time.

First Alex Cross Book.......2007-08-17
This was my first Alex Cross novel and it really drawed my in from the beginning. It trully was a page turner and I could barely put the book down. I loved how the chapters were short and sweet. I am now searching to find more of this books to read to get some more of that action that keeps me on the edge!
Hated The Ending.......2007-08-07
I got this book to read on the plane as I usually like this murder thrillers for travel. Overall I enjoyed the book but was not at all prepared for the ending. Or the non ending I sould say. In this kind of novel, gererally the good guy catches the bad guy at the end and all's happily ever after. Not so here. So because of this I won't be reading more. An end which is only the beginning of the next book is not a plot trick I appreciate. I do like Alex Cross and family...but Patterson appears to be unable to let his main character ever be HAPPY. Too unsettling. There's enough unhappiness in the world, I read a novel to escape and have the good guys win.

Good . But the use of GD word is often .......2007-06-09
This is a book of Bank Robberies and killings of bank managers families and a few detectives . I was able to read the entire book however I found the GD word that used way to many times in book to be a little offensive so I won't be reading anymore of the Alex Cross series .The book would have been just as good without the GD words in it .

Another Great Alex Cross Novel.......2007-04-30
Like all the other JP Books especially the Alex Cross series this book is the same - a great thriller that keeps you guessing right to the end. He has the usual short chapter set up which we all love i am sure making this a short read full of suspense. BTW you must also get Violets are Blue so you can find out how it all ends! Great read would recommend to anyone
Roses are Red.......2007-02-06
The author devotes too much writing to covering the activities of the family of the leading character.

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant .......2007-09-02
I am a true Julie Garwood fan. The Clayborne family is by far the best I have read out of all of her books, she seems to astound me with every chapter. But, I do believe The Clayborne Brides was her weakest collection of books, but she still impressed me.
I was disappointed by the obvious rush with the love stories. They all seemed to fall in love quickly with eachother. And I see the arguements above about how that ruined the book. But, what was she suppose to write about? The brothers were all described in previous novels, and if she continued to have the brothers get into trouble throughout the novels, it would just drag on and on. Plus, there were numerous times where to cleverly stated that a few days or weeks had passed.
She did a really great job by making us fall in love with not only Harrison but all of the brothers as well.
Great light reading.......2007-08-27
Even though I'd read this book several years ago, I still couldn't put it down. A great story line with very interesting characters. Can't wait to read the sequel stories again, too.
disappointing.......2007-04-10
I usually really like Garwood but this book which is three stories in one book is very disapointing. The first and the last brothers' stories seemed forced.
More of the Claybornes from "For the Roses".......2007-02-22
It was so nice to get to read about Douglas, Travis, and Adam. I had wondered about Cole until I saw that there was still "Come the Spring" to tell about Cole and more about Daniel Ryan who was introduced in these. The only thing I could find wrong with this book was that each story was too short :) I know that they had to be shorter to fit all three in one book, but I wish they each had their own novel! :) Other than that I thought these books were all great just as I think every single book Julie Garwood has written was great. I don't think she'll ever write a bad book - she's just not capable of it!
The Claybourne Brothers.......2003-08-26
This book is three short stories in one. It is best to read "For the Roses" before you read these books, so that you understand the Claybourne family better.
"ONE PINK ROSE" is the story of Travis Claybourne. Travis is sent by Mama Rose to pick up Emily Finnegan, and deliver her to her groom, O'Toole. Emily is a headstrong girl, who Travis finds difficult to understand, yet intriguing to know more of. While I enjoyed this first book, I did not feel that I really got to know either Travis or Emily. Travis was the one brother in "For the Roses" that I never felt got as much attention as the others. I was hoping for a little more insight into his character, other than his liking of debate and "The Republic," which was already explored to some extent in "For the Roses." Overall, this book rates, in my opinion, a 3/5 stars.
"ONE WHITE ROSE" is the story of Douglas Claybourne, the quiet brother. Douglas bought an Arabian horse six months prior, and finally has time to go collect the animal. When he arrives at the home of Parker Grant, he finds Isabel Grant, his wife, giving birth. Soon, Douglas discovers that Parker Grant has died, and Isabel is being harassed by the town bully. The ultimate reason for the harassment of the bully is a surprise, and I won't give it away here. By far, Douglas' story was the best of these three. I felt that Isabel and Douglas got to know each other, and truly fell in love. It seems that Julie Garwood took an extra liking to Douglas, and focused more on his story. I give this book a 4/5 stars.
Finally, "ONE RED ROSE" the story of Adam Claybourne, the head of the Clayborne family. This story was a complete disappointment. I had expected more from this courageous leader, then a story not worth the effort to read. I knew and respected Adam more when I first met him in "For the Roses." I hope one day, Julie revisits this tale, and improves it greatly. Just skip reading this one. 0/5 stars.
If you are a fan of the Claybournes (as most Julie fans are) this series is a must have. Read tibits of Adams' story. Douglas' story is worth the effort.

Book Description
At the turn of the twentieth century, Ellen Rimbauer became the young bride of Seattle industrialist John Rimbauer, and began keeping a remarkable diary. This diary became the secret place where Ellen could confess her fears of the new marriage, her confusion over her emerging sexuality, and the nightmare that her life would become. The diary not only follows the development of a girl into womanhood, it follows the construction of the Rimbauer mansioncalled Rose Redan enormous home that would be the site of so many horrific and inexplicable tragedies in the years ahead. The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer: My Life at Rose Red is a rare document, one that gives us an unusual view of daily life among the aristocracy in the early 1900s, a window into one womans hidden emotional torment, and a record of the mysterious events at Rose Red that scandalized Seattle society at the timeevents that can only be fully understood now that the diary has come to light. Edited by Joyce Reardon, Ph.D. as part of her research, the diary is being published as preparations are being made by Dr. Reardon to enter Rose Red and fully investigate its disturbing history.

Diary- Ellen Rimbauer.......2007-05-09
I loved the book. Filled with suspense. I struggled to put it down.
drek.......2007-03-20
this book is utter drek. i can't even believe it was written by stephen king; maybe his dog wrote it? there are lots grammatical and vocabulary errors, and there is absolutely no story. it is exactly the kind of crappy imitation of stephen king that one's pet might attempt while bored--or high.
the diary of ellan rimbauer.......2007-02-15
the book was interesting, many things/questions were answered. i noticed things that were in the book & VHS of Ellans diary were different from the beginning of the movie rose red. but in general it was very good and worth the wait to get it.
Good Reading.......2007-01-10
I enjoyed reading this book even more than I did watching the movie. I am a book nut though. I think reading the books makes the movies better. The author did an excellent job portraying Ellen Rimbauer and her husband and their lives at Rose Red.

"Do you know who I am? I shall tell you. I am Elizabeth, Princess of England, daughter of Henry VIII and his wife Anne Boleyn. I am eleven years old. My mother, once Queen, is now dead. Almost eight years ago, when I was not yet three, Father chopped off her head."
Daughter of a fallen queen, young Princess Elizabeth lives a complicated and dangerous life. She fears her father's famous temper but loves him dearly, noting that she would trade all her jewels just to be noticed by him. She also loves her brother Edward, heir to the English throne, but doesn't like her older sister Mary, who torments her and conspires against her. Kat, her governess, is so worried for Elizabeth's life that she spends hours checking their room for poison whenever they move to a new palace. Court intrigues swirl around her, the French are threatening an invasion, and Kat is clamoring for her to have another bath--that makes nearly six in three months! Through Elizabeth's diary, author Kathryn Lasky brings the Tudor world to life: glittering banquets of peacock, eel, and swan; palaces so stinky that "everyone goes about with their noses buried in pomander balls to hide the stench"; archery contests, where Elizabeth excels; and Latin and logic lessons... where she needs a little work. Some of the history is slightly flawed (a misplaced date or two), but readers will enjoy the great detail as they learn about the childhood of one of England's greatest monarchs. An epilogue, with Tudor family trees, paintings, and background information enhances this already excellent and entertaining book. (Ages 10 and older) --Sunny Delaney

A Forgotten Princess, A Queen Remembered.......2007-04-02
This book provides a unique look at what life may have been like for Elizabeth long before she was queen. It's easy for historical figures like Elizabeth to become so much larger than life that we forget they were real people, once. Elizabeth I recreates the emotions and thoughts of an adolescent girl in a way that shows that even a princess feels the universal emotions of loneliness, fear, and doubt.
Elizabeth I addresses two themes especially well: a daughter's longing for her father's affection, and a keen political mind's awareness of what it takes to be a successful ruler. Despite the fact that he had her mother beheaded, Elizabeth still loves her father and lives for the moments when he shows her favor. She is also an astute observer of the goings on in the world of royals and nobility, and early on comes to the realization that if she should become Queen, she must remain unmarried to retain her rule.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves diaries and memoirs and takes an interest in the intricacies of queendom.
Red Rose of the House of Tudor.......2007-03-27
This is one of the first in the Royal Diary series that I have read and It is by far my favorite. It gives a great insight in to palace life and into the life of a teenager. It is a great read for all Princess. This book also includes historical facts and pictures about Elizibeth the 1st and her family. I recomend this book for anyone who likes princess, drama and historical fiction. This is one of my favorites in an intriuging and educational series
Ok Book.......2007-03-06
I really like to read books about people and what happened in their life. I have read alot of diaries from different people in different time periods. I found as I was reading that this book starts out medium exciting. In the middle of the book it gets boring and I just felt like starting over on a different book, but by the end of the book I just didn't want to put it down. I really didn't know anything about Elizabeth 1 but after reading this book I would be able to tell you good, bad, and interesting things that happened to her. I found as I read the book that she is like me in many ways. She likes to be outside on sunny days, be around people, be adventurous and free, and she loves animals. It made it easier to read the book because I could look for more ways she was alike me. Even though there were many interesting things that happened in this book I wouldn't recomend this book to a friend. I wasn't really excited to read the book and I went really slow through it.
My review .......2007-02-25
I loved this book it made me relize that the world has changed alot from 1544to now (2007). The best part was that I felt like i was the one going through all the trials and challanges , That Elzibeth went through .
A great book for those who love English history.......2006-11-20
Having taken English History in a British school many years ago, I found this book to be very enlightening in reference to this period of time. This book gives a great insight into the formation of the Elizabethian period.
Book Description
Classic Civil War novel set on a plantation in the Natchez country.
Customer Reviews:
Sorrow in the Deep South.......2004-05-13
A bestseller in 1934, Stark Young's "So Red the Rose" is an odd study of Mississippi plantation life before, during, and after the Civil War. Stark Young was one of America's leading drama critics of the 20th Century (he died in 1963), and his style seems to have been influenced by the dramatists Chekhov (whose plays were translated by Young) and Maeterlinck. There is a dramatis personae at the beginning of the book, which is helpful because there is no protagonist per se. The plot shifts from character to character and many a character is introduced and then never seen again (just as in real life). The narrative in the first half is quite lanquid, as Young describes the aura of dolce far niente at neighboring plantations near Natchez. When the War comes, there are the classic complaints about petty inconveniences and the assurances that the whole thing will be over in a couple of months. But then the antebellum dream is slowly surrounded by the nightmare of war. Mississippi is invaded and Natchez is bombarded. Two of the young men in the families who joined the Confederate Army do not come back: one is killed, the other presumed dead. A patriarch, returning ill from the front, dies of natural causes. A family is given 20 minutes to vacate their mansion before it is burned down. Then, after the War, when their economic system has been obliterated and their properties mortgaged, the families accept it with a bitter resignation. All this is related in a calm, academic manner, and there may be those readers who find the telling a little cold. But I think Young, a refined critic, was determined not to cater to a taste for 1890's melodrama. His style is straightforward but restrained, an appropriate tone for a tale of Southern aristocracy enduring a Civil Reign of Terror.
How True the Fiction.......2001-06-20
A most enjoyable, fictional, historical account of life in the South during and after the Civil War. Enough truth to make it very believable and the author's descriptive terminology places you in with the characters so that you become very involved with the story personally. A lot of history is learned about Civil War military blunders that certainly effected the outcome of the war. I can understand why they made a movie of this book. It would be a good one to bring back as TV miniseries.
Very engaging look into the culture of the antebellum South........1999-02-22
"So Red the Rose" is a very engaging tale that affords the reader an insight into the culture and attitudes of the antebellum South that became the Confederacy. However, my fellow McGehee descendants (the author was a cousin of actual McGehees in Mississippi) need to bear in mind as they read that this is a NOVEL, not a genealogical register or an entirely true family history.
Classic Civil War novel from the Southern point of view.......1998-08-24
So Red the Rose is a classic fictional account of the Civil War years from the Southern point of view by one of the leading writers of the so-called Southern Renaissance of the first half of the 20th Century. Stark Young grew up among the kind of people with whom he populates his novel, and his novel focuses on what he called "the life of the affections."
So Red the Rose was a best-seller in he 1930's and was made into a movie. Its popularity was eclipsed a few years after its publication by Gone With the Wind. Some critics consider So Red the Rose a better book.
The novel describes a Mississippi family and how they were affected by the war. I found the book deeply moving and engrossing; although I live in a different century, live in a different part of the country than the characters, and hold a different set of values in regard to race, I found myself understanding them, relating to them, and liking them.

Bad Boys with Red Roses .......2007-06-27
Still Mr. and Mrs. by Janelle Denison
Rachel Hudson and Luke Kincaid fell in love while attending high school in Las Vegas. On a whim one night, they decided to get married in one of Vegas' many chapels. Even though the two loved each other very much, Rachel's controlling father didn't take kindly to the marriage. He arranged for an annulment and moved the family to New York City.
Eight years later, Rachel is back in Vegas to tell Luke that their annulment was never filed, and that they're still married. She's brought papers for him to sign, which he says he will do. After Rachel spends the weekend with him.
Still Mr. and Mrs. is an erotic tale of two lovers torn apart, and coming back together again. I loved both Rachel and Luke and the combustible way they fit together. This story is scorching hot, and a very entertaining read.
Tempt Me, Tease Me, Thrill Me by Tina Donahue
Cait Campbell is a lawyer who is about to be appointed as a judge. As part of a charity event, she is also about to be auctioned off for a date with the highest bidder. Det. Sean Logan spent one night with Cait after his brother's wedding to her cousin, then she slipped away.
Sean doesn't want Cait to slip away this time. He attends the auction and wins his date with Cait. But he makes her wait two weeks, building up the tension between the two of them. Will they have another one night stand, or will they decide that they love each other, and want to stay together?
Tempt Me, Tease Me, Thrill Me certainly lives up to its name. The tension between Cait and Sean is strong, but at times I became more than a little annoyed with the angst between them and Cait's failure to really see Sean.
But the ending of the story absolutely thrilled me and made me laugh out loud, causing my frustration to disappear. This is a fun tale that readers will want to follow to its satisfying conclusion.
The Invitation by Sharon Cullars
Defense attorney Jeralyn gets a strange package one day. An invitation to an "event," accompanied by a single red rose. When a man calls to see if she'll be attending, she tells him no. That invitation opens a world that Jeralyn has forgotten. That world includes a past where her parents were killed in a house fire, and Jeralyn was involved with two brothers, Adrian and Amil.
Jeralyn is not sure she wants to remember the past, but Amil is determined that she will, and that she will die because of it. And Adrian is bound and determined to save her.
Utterly original and completely engrossing, The Invitation delves into a woman's past and the way that it intrudes on her present. I was drawn in from page one, and couldn't let go. The characters are beautifully written, and the story crafted in a manner as to keep the reader entranced. Once again, Sharon Cullars has trilled me with a story of love, deception and redemption. I highly advise reading this tale.

2 out of 3 ain't bad.......2007-05-05
Like many of these novels that contain 3 short stories, the hero and heroine have met before and there's something that's keeping them apart. In this book, you'll find a red rose mentioned in each story (and you'll find that like many novels, the blurb on the back cover is not accurate). While I originally bought this book because I love Janelle Denison, Tina Donahue's story is the one that I really loved and wanted to read again and again.
Still Mr. & Mrs. - Janelle Denison - 4 stars
Rachel Hudson comes back to Las Vegas to see Luke Kincaid and take care of some things from the past. Luke Kincaid has never gotten over what happened between him and Rachel Hudson. Rachel hurt him badly and since that relationship ended, he's kept all of his relationships casual. Luke wins a wager that will have Rachel in his bed. He's hoping that having Rachel again will cure him of her memory.
I love Janelle Denison's books - she's an automatic buy for me. And while I liked this story, it seems like there could have been more - it's the shortest story in this collection - less than 80 pages and seemed to end way too quickly. It was enjoyable but left me wanting more.
Tempt Me, Tease Me, Thrill Me - Tina Donahue - 5 stars
Four months ago, detective Sean Logan and attorney (not judge) Cait Campbell had a one night stand - a memorable evening for both of them. Since then, neither one has forgotten the other. Sean believes that he's found the woman he wants to marry. Cait, on the other hand, is very wary of marriage - her parents seemed happily married and then went through an acrimonious divorce. While she adores Sean, she doesn't want to get involved and definitely doesn't want to get married. So to try and forget him, since their meeting, she filled her hours with work.
As part of a charity event, there's an auction which gives the winner a chance to take Cait to dinner. And who's the lucky winner of the auction? No other than Sean who wants a chance to convince Cait that what they have is special.
I loved this story. Sean Logan is HOT (and I would love to have him convince me of anything). And Cait's hang-ups about their relationship seemed believable. This is the first novel I've read by Tina Donahue and it made me go out and check to see what else she's written.
The Invitation - Sharon Cullars - 3 stars
Jerri (not Gerri) Harris receives an invitation and then a phone call from a mysterious Andrew Valmer asking her to attend a private gathering. She's tired from the stress of her job as an attorney, leery about the invitation, and decides to decline.
If you read the blurb on the back cover ("...a mysterious, deeply seductive male voice, inviting Gerri [sic] to a special evening at a beautiful old mansion - and the fulfillment of her most hidden desires") you'd think there was going to be some hanky panky going on with that invitation but that's not what's happening at all. Instead, Jerri meets Adrian, a man who warns her that the invitation is actually from someone who means to do her harm.
This story is unlike the other two as this is more of a mystery than a romance. I had a hard time with this story. The more I learned about Jerri, the less I liked her. And I couldn't buy the romance between the two characters. The author seemed to be more focused on the mystery so that the romance seemed secondary to it. Not one of my favorites.
Great anthology.......2007-04-29
"Still Mr. & Mrs" by. Janelle Denison. At a casino in Las Vegas, Luke wins the bet of a lifetime that leads to Rachel Hudson being in his bed. His plan is no more regrets of what could have been as he wants to make her his sure bet.
"Tempt Me, Tease Me, Thrill Me" by Tina Donahue. The greatest night of his life occurred when Chicago police officer Sean Logan made love with Judge Cait Campbell. He wants her honor to agree to a lifetime sentence, but may have to arrest her to get her to confess her guilty desires for him.
"The Invitation" by Sharon Cullars. The single long stem rose arrives with an unsigned invitation. Next comes the sexy phone call by a man who oozes seduction as he invites Gerri to meet him for a rendezvous that he vows will satiate both of their most coveted fantasies.

Christians who have longed for a more readable literal Bible translation will find much to praise in the English Standard Version. The ESV's translation team of over 100 members has admirably attempted to preserve the stylistic variety of biblical authorship and ease of reading (at the eighth-grade level) despite the word-for-word translation, which historically has resulted in a choppier text flow. Bible study aficionados will appreciate the short introductions to each book, an extensive center column cross-reference system, full-color maps, and a 14,500-entry concordance. The hardcover edition includes the basic Bible frills: a presentation page, as well as marriage, birth, and death registries. There are some luxurious touches as well. The free, prepackaged CD-ROM has the ESV text, KJV Bible for comparative study and use with Strong's Concordance, Nave's Topical Bible, the Crossway Classic Bible Commentary, and others. These extra bonuses are a good incentive to take the English Standard Version for a test drive. --Cindy Crosby

Great Bible if you need a small one........2007-10-06
I used this to read a verse at a wedding in France. I, of course, did not want to carry a large Bible from the USA to France. It was the perfect size. Although, a little small in print but I knew that going in. It worked perfectly and everyone was pleased. I then gave it to the bride and groom as part of their wedding present.
A nice handy ESV bible.......2007-10-05
As for the translation, it's the best in accuracy and readability better than NIV and NASB. I bought this so that I can carry it around in my pocket. It's the perfect size to take it with you for a walk and devotion. The letters are quite small so it's not for long studies. A handsome little Bible for...highly recommend it.
Fantastic, concise Bible!.......2007-09-28
I purchased this ESV Bible because I wanted something small and portable, as well as a good, practical, readable translation. This print is excellent, the font is clear and not too small. The leather cover being soft gives the book an elasticity while not being too floppy. I have truly enjoyed my first few weeks of using this Bible and recommend it to everyone.
ESV Weathered Metal Bible.......2007-09-07
This is a handy bible to toss in my bag that I carry to work, the library, etc. Being in the Army National Guard, I appreciate the rugged, durable cover and the look of it. It's a decent translation, basically a conservative evangelical modernization of the revised standard version. I would recommend this bible to friends.
The Only Flaw is the Tiny Print.......2007-09-06
It's good to see the ESV gaining traction in the market. This is a beautifully bound compact Bible, with excellent reference notes and a remarkably complete concordance. Small enough to fit into a typical ladies purse, it's a convenient size to take on the train or bus. But the print is extremely small and takes some getting used to. It's a shame the publisher didn't make the Bible even slightly larger; I think it would have been a runaway best seller. As it stands, I can only give it 3 stars...the print is just too small.

Poetry for children -- and for adults!.......2007-09-27
A follow-up to the author's equally wonderful "Wishes, Lies, and Dreams," this superb volume is one of the best sources for teaching poetry that I've ever read. How many of us found that school crushed any budding love of poetry we had, rather than nurturing it? Well, Kenneth Koch will bring that crushed bud back into full, glorious blossom! He has a rare gift -- he removes the barriers to poetry, the ones that say it's too deep, too different, too complex, for the likes of ordinary people; yet he never removes its mystery, its wonder, its beauty. If anything, he makes it available & familiar to all in a way that only enhances its rapturous qualities. He makes us realize that a poem is as obvious & rich, as subtle & tangible, as a flower. The poem is there for anyone, for everyone, to savor & enjoy.
Most highly recommended!

.
This is one of my favorite books:
"I like to write about poems. I like poems.
Some girls are like poems."
-Eric Filisbret, 3rd or 4th grade
"Dog where do you get that bark?
Dragon where do you get that flame?
Kitten where do you get that meow?
Rose where do you get that red?
Bird, where do you get those wings?"
-Desiree Lynn Collier, 3rd or 4th grade
"Come with me and I'll show you my heart. I
know where it is and I know all about it...
Come with me, I'll take you to a world, not
a world that you know. Not a world that
I know. But a world that nobody knows,
not you or me... "
It's ironic, the good kind, for me to learn
so much from a book about ok, teaching
children about poetry.
Not Just For Kids.......2004-06-26
This excellent book seems to be a missing link in writing instruction. Other books provide somewhat mechanical methods for generating writing ideas, but Koch's book leads the reader into natural lines of thought which connect the reader with his or her experience of life, experience from which the writing must flow. I am pretty sure this would work for any kind of writing and is not limited to poetry. Don't be too proud to use this book on yourself!
Written with Reverence and Fun.......2002-02-11
Mr. Koch will not underestimate children. He will not talk down, dumb down, water down, because a passion for the subject matter animates this book as it must animate his instruction. He carefully documents and shares children's work as if it is as important as the poetry that inspired it.
Like anything truly sublime, the unspoken lesson enlivens this book . If you really share what you love with students, guide them instead of showing them, ask instead of telling, and treat their products with the respect you'd give a visiting artist, they will produce art as amazing as Mr. Koch's students did.
Forget teaching poetry to children- teach poetry instead. Take the concept and apply it to all creative acts. Teach art from great and challenging art. Teach music from powerful, sophisticated music. They can not only take it, they'll take it and keep it.
Great for Elementary Kids.......1999-04-09
I used this book to introduce unrhymed poetry to a fourth grade class. They just knew that they were going to HATE poetry, but after they were exposed to these poems and had a chance to write their own, they were upset when the poetry unit was over. They loved the poems written by other children that Koch included.

At 25, Hayley Albright--the oldest of her orphaned family--firmly decides that she will not marry. Instead, she devotes herself to her household of boisterous siblings and eccentric servants, giving up her dreams of love and marriage until one moonlit night, when she comes upon a wounded stranger in the woods. Determined to save him, Hayley takes him home and nurses him back to health.
Lord Stephen Barrett awakens in an unfamiliar bedchamber to find he's been shot in what appears to be the second attempt on his life. Deciding that the Albright home is a safe place to recuperate while he works out a plan to catch his assailant, he conceals his true identity by telling his rescuer that he is a tutor en route to his next assignment. What Stephen won't admit, even to himself, is that Hayley's warmth of spirit, beautiful face, aquamarine eyes, and lushly curved six-foot-tall body is a powerful inducement for him to remain in Kent. Before long, however, Stephen can't deny that Hayley stirs a fierce passion in him while the rambunctious children and devoted servants threaten to melt the icy coldness of his heart. But he must leave the Albright home to identify and capture his would-be assassin, for to remain would place the family in jeopardy. Will Hayley forgive Stephen for deserting her--if only for a little while--and can Stephen come to terms with the depth of his feelings for the beautiful spinster?
In her debut novel, D'Alessandro pairs a moody, dark hero with a sunny, free-spirited heroine while demonstrating a marked talent for gathering a cast of lively secondary characters. The hero is endearingly obtuse about recognizing love and the heroine admirable in her determination not to pine for a man who refuses to realize their rare good fortune. --Lois Faye Dyer
Book Description
Yellow for friendship.
Pink for passion. But . . .
Red Roses Mean Love.
She dreamed of roses....
Orphaned and abandoned by her fiancé, Hayley Albright is determined to care for her younger siblings even if it means having to give up her own dreams. She doesn't expect to ever find love or get married . . . until one moonlit night when she saves the life of a mysterious stranger.
. . . And he wants only to make her dreams come true....
Lord Stephen Barrett woke up gazing at the face of an angel. He was alive. And safe, for now, from the killer stalking his every move. Allowing Hayley to believe he is just a tutor of modest means, Stephen stays on for reasons of his own, never anticipating the passions Hayley would stir in his cold, wary heart. Her innocence is pure seduction. Her touch is sweet temptation. And suddenly the man who has everything is willing to risk it all--for a woman who has nothing to give . . . but all her heart. . . .

DITTO the Susan Smith "cynbay49" review!.......2007-09-05
Although I cannot claim the knowledge of inaccuracies Susan Smith reported in her review (I thought crickets were everywhere!) I wholeheartedly agree with her other observations. The characters were truly one-dimensional and Stephen "Barrettson's" derogatory comments about Mr. Popplexxxx's name were truly grating after the third (and even more so after the twenty-third) mention. The double attempted murder plot was so contrived it was almost laughable the second time around. The requisite dotty but wise older female character, the charming but wild children, the bluestocking leading lady: it's all (yawn) here.
From the looks of things I am definitely in the minority when I offer Ms. D'Alessandro a yellow carnation for RRML (disdain, rejection, you have disappointed me) !!!
Beautiful Love Story.......2006-06-02
I LOVE this book. A perfect regency romance. Loveable characters, humor, tension, and most important -a very romantic ending. ~SIGH~ This is a book shelf keeper! You won't be able to put it down. D'Alessandro's writng is amazing and the characters are amazing, from the two leads to the hilarious family that includes a crazy cook, a deaf -not so deaf- aunt, two scurvy ship mates, two pubescent boys, and of course a little girl that speaks her mind. SMILE! -that's what you'll be doing while reading this book and it'll stay with you all day.
Just delightful! A Real keeper! Get it! You won't be dissapointed.
Red roses mean an incredible love story!!.......2005-08-15
This was a deeply moving love story! Hayley really was a unique woman - so capable, so caring, beautiful and exactly what Stephen needed! In fact the best thing that could have happened to Stephen was to almost loose his life and be resuced and saved by Hayley and her unusual family. I do not tink I would have liked the Stephen Barrett before he encountered these real people in his life. He just did not know love nor how real people relate in a family of heart! He was a true stuffed shirt of the bloody English elite. When honest to goodness love mixes with the chaos and confusion of a real family Stephen is so out of his element that he begins to become a real person too. He starts to feel for the first time with his heart -I dont think he had one before. Dealing with Winston, Grimsley and Pierre was a riot, and having a man to man talk with Hayley's brothers was priceless. And shaving to please Aunt Olivia - but mostly the tea party with little Callie these were moments you do not find in many romance book - and they made this book unique. Mostly though it was the passion and love that developed between Stephen and Hayley - it is so deep you really feel it as a reader. When Stephen leaves her you are aching as Hayley is - and when she encounters him again, and he again breaks her heart well trust me you are going to need lots of tissues to get through the end of this book. There is so much passion and love in this book - you feel it throughout. This was my first DAlesndro book but it wont be my last!
Awesome Novel!!.......2004-12-14
I would definently recommend this novel to anyone who wants to escape into a world of romance and true love. This novel was very well written, and very suspenseful at some parts. It is a very good novel, and I would recommend it a thousand times!!
Basically Good ý Despite Flaws.......2004-05-12
Hayley Albright had all but given up on ever settling down and getting married. Her fiancé jilted her after her father's death left behind the responsibility of raising her four younger siblings. Not only that, but her father also left debts which took most of the inheritance to pay off. Hayley found a way to support her family, but if society ever discovers her secret employment, it would be quite the scandal.
Returning home from London one evening, she finds an unconscious man who has been shot and left for dead. She takes him home and under her care, he slowly recovers. Stephen Barrett, the Marquess of Glenfield, and heir to a duke, woke to the conclusion someone is indeed trying to kill him. Therefore, it would be in his best interest to not divulge his identity, in case the killer tries to find him to finish him off. So, Hayley comes to know him as the tutor, Stephen Barrettson.
Stephen is cynical, not used to displays of love and affection, and believes anyone being nice to him must have a hidden agenda. But he's baffled by Hayley's compassion, and selflessness, when she has no idea of his noble status. He finds himself unwittingly drawn to, and captivated by her, even though she and her household are unconventional to say the least. Hayley also finds herself attracted to this too proper, but ultimately kind man. What will happen when Stephen has to leave and return to his London home? And what will she think if she finds out he's lied about his true identity?
This was the debut novel for Ms. D'Alessandro, and I found it a little difficult to rate, because while it was good, I didn't feel it was great. However, taking into account this is her first published book, I see great potential for growth.
Certain phrases and plot devices seemed overused in the portrayal of this story. Some examples would be, Stephen and Hayley would have an encounter with each other, and then each would separately vow to steer clear of the other. But of course, by that evening or the next day, they were spending time together again. Now, we want them to be together, but I did tire of hearing the same mental battle over and over. These women also blushed way too much. It became distracting that one of them always had "color staining her cheeks". That phrase was overused. Hayley saved Stephen's life not once, but twice. That plot device seemed overused. Stephen also treated Hayley unkindly too many times, and that became tiresome as well.
Overall, the writing was good, but these things I've mentioned became a distraction. The characters were all likeable, and the humor made it much more enjoyable for me. In summary, even though this book was only average in my opinion, I will read another by this author, because I see real potential for her future work.

Beware - Not all the same book........2007-09-28
Amazon has confused several different items. They have attached the "Editorial reviews" for a hardcover book of the Brothers Grimm's Snow White and Rose Red illustrated by Gennady Spirin and published by Philomel to a School & Library book illustrated by James Weren with cartoon-style illustrations and an adudio cassette, both published by Troll Associates. Other versions of this classic fairy tale with different illustrators have their own separate reviews as these completely different items should. When dealing with children's picture books, different illustrators create entirely different books. All the Spirin and Werren versions share is a title.
Childhood Memories.......2000-05-12
I remember reading this story over and over in elementary school. It was a favorite for everyone in my class and would create fights over who got to borrow it from the classroom. One of my fondest memories of 2nd grade was performing a play of this story.
