Book Description

An exciting, ground-level view of the Civil War through the innovative use of book, CD-ROM, and the World Wide Web, created by an award-winning historian. Two communities in America's Great Valley --Franklin county, Pennsylvania, and Augusta County, Virginia --separated by only a few hundred miles, share much in their politics and ways of life. Yet they emerge on opposing sides of a war in which they zealously send their sons to fight and die. Here we see a Civil War that is not the inevitable conflict of rival civilizations, but a human drama, immediate, particular, engrossing. This is history as lived experience, presented in a beautifully designed digital archive of letters, diaries, newspaper accounts, military records, maps, images, and music. With cutting-edge technology that makes full use of both CD-ROM and the Web, Valley of the Shadow allows us all --from beginners to buffs to experts --to navigate the past in ways not possible before. Whether your interests are in the Civil War, Southern history, military history, African-American history, or biography, you can explore them to the fullest here. The CD runs on both Macintosh and Windows platforms.

I would highly recommend this book and CD-ROM package to anyone who is interested in social history of the South or Civil War history. The letters and newspapers sections are especially fascinating. They give incredible first-hand accounts of the daily lives of people of these two communities. The data seems endless. The team that compliled this information is to be commended.

    Book Description

When Dwayne Burns turned 18 during World War II, he decided that he wanted to fight alongside America's best. He joined the paratroopers and was assigned to the 508th Regiment of the 82d Airborne Division. Little did he suspect that a year later he'd be soaring in a flak-riddled C-47 over Normandy, part of the very spearhead of the Allied drive to seize back Europe.

Burns landed behind German lines during the dark, early hours of D-day, and gradually found other survivors of his division. The paratroopers fought on every side in a confused, running battle through the hedgerows, finally making a stand in a surrounded farmhouse. With one room reserved for their growing piles of corpses, the paratroopers held their ground until finally relieved by infantry advancing from the beaches.

After being pulled out of Normandy, the airborne troops were said to be "burning a hole in SHAEF's pocket," and thus were launched into Holland as part of Montgomery's plan to gain a bridgehead across the Rhine. This daytime jump was less confused than the nocturnal one, but there were more Germans than expected and fewer Allied forces in support. It was another maelstrom of pointblank combat in all directions, and though the 82d achieved its objectives, the campaign as a whole achieved little but casualties.

The 82d had hardly refilled with replacements when the Germans broke through the U.S. front in the Ardennes. The 82d's paratroopers were put aboard trucks and hastened to stand in the way of the panzer onslaught. Passing through Bastogne they went farther north to St. Vith, where the U.S. 7th Armored and other divisions were reeling. The 82nd held its own with quickly assembled defense perimeters, allowing other units to escape. After beating off massive attacks by German SS, the paratroopers were disgusted to hear that they, too, had been ordered to retreat. They didn't feel they needed to, but Monty was determined to "tidy up the battlefield." On January 3 they counterattacked through the freezing hills, sealing off the Bulge and pursuing the Germans back into the Reich..

In this work, Dwayne Burns, assisted by his son Leland (U.S. Army, 1975-79), not only relates the chaos of combat but the intimate thinking of a young soldier thrust into the center of several of history's greatest battles. His memories provide a fascinating insight into the reality of close-quarters combat.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect first hand account of the 82nd.......2007-07-12

After the world wide attention for the 101st this is a welcome addition to airborne warfare in WWII

5 out of 5 stars great book by an honored veteran.......2007-07-06

This is a very well written book b y a man who was there. Telling the personal story of Leland Burns' travels thru F Co of the 508PIR, Jump Into the Valley of the Shadow is a fine read. Factual and well thought out, it goes thru the gritty days of fighting that only a man who has lived thru it can tell you. But it also goes over the softer, more human side of his time overseas in an in-depth and honest way.
From his personal accounts of his courtship with his wife, to his time in England with both new and old friends, the book is made better by the fact that these are all REAL people that actually existed (and in many cases are still living) that makes this a truly special book to have.

5 out of 5 stars A Book from the 82nd........2007-02-04

This book starts out with the author staring out the open door of a C-47 on the night of June 5, 1944 and realizing that it was now too late to join the motor pool or become a cook. Like a lot of other youngsters, when he was drafted into the Army he decided that he wanted to be with America's best, and that was the paratroopers.

I was glad to see this boook. There has been a lot written about the 101st in recent years and their defense at Bastogne including 'Band of Brothers,' the movie 'Battleground' and a bunch more. Much less well known is the action of the 82nd to hold the north shoulder and prevent the Germans from having more roads to use for their advance. Burns was there. He doesn't tell the big picture - there are a lot of books on the Battle of the Bulge. He tells his story from the bottom side. It looked different from a foxhole.

The book is told in the form of a bunch of little stories, not a day by day diary. This makes it much more interesting, and I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars DIABLO!!! All the way!!!.......2007-01-07

OK! This is one man's story about the "Oh Eight" the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (P.I.R.), 2nd Bn, Fox Co. Mr Burns jumped into France, Operation Neptune (D-Day) and Market-Garden (Holland) two jump stars earned the hard way. There are a lot of "soldiers stories" in the book, being with your buddies, goofing off, military life, as well as the stories about combat. Books like these put a human face on anonymous mens faces of black and white photos taken 60+ years ago. It shows they were pretty much the same as most young men, full of life and hopes and dreams, except their lives were forged in the fires of the Depression. It is a good read and a page turner, there are "flashback" type parts of the book, that may disagree with some readers. But I was most humbled and impressed by his story and the stories of other men I have met, ironically from Easy Co. 508th PIR, Mr Burns' sister Co to his own Fox Co. I am glad some of these men have told their story, because too many never have or got the chance to live long enough to. Thier story is told by rows of silent crosses in France, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Germany, and a thousand other lonely places where American boys fought and died. Read this book if you want to know the story of one man's journey through a pivotal time in human history.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding and Riveting Memories from Training to Combat.......2006-12-17

I highly recommend this book. Dwayne Burns brings to life his memories from elite training as a paratrooper to his feelings and emotions of actually going into combat. Along the way, he shares his personal life stories and how all of this shaped the person he was to became. The incredible bond that paratroopers have which started in their training and lasts to this day is very inspiring. Reading this book reinforced my genuine thanks to these men that "Jumped Into the Valley of the Shadow" along with the rest of the "Greatest Generation" that helped bring peace back to this world in the uncertain time of WWII.

5 out of 5 stars Sixth in the Series.......2007-02-02

The author Peter Tremayne obviously has a great knowledge of Ireland in the 7th century and also on the Irish Law of the period. His Sister Fidelma book are attracting what can only be described as a cult following, but they are of interest to anyone who likes historical novels or mysteries. This series of books are set in Ireland in the 7th century, a time when there was total equality for women. The lead character is the beguiling Sister Fidelma. She is a brilliant scholar, a leading authority on Irish law and the sister of a king. This is also a period in history when celibacy was not yet a part of religious life.

Sister Fidelma is on a mission for her brother the king. She has been sent to Gleann Geis, the forbidden valley to meet there with the chieftain Laisre. Her mission to to negotiate with the chieftain for permission to build a Christian church and school to replace the Druid sanctuaries. Laisre's people are know to be hostile to the new religion and Fidelma knows that she will have her work cut out to convince the chief and his people of the good that will come of it . . .

1 out of 5 stars Valley of the Shadow.......2003-11-05

Written in the style of a Bulwar Litton Contest winner with the grammatical knowlege of a five year old! No, Mr. Tremayne, between you and I, is not correct english. The passive voice may add a few words(never use one word, if two or three will do)and pad your wallet and the flimsy plot but it does nothing for the reader. History C-, Style and Grammar F.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Fidelma so far. . ........2001-12-06

Just when I thought I might be finding the Sister Fidelma novels a touch repetitive, I read "Valley of the Shadow" and my faith was restored. Of the first six novels of the series, I have to brand this one my favorite.

Although it carries the flavor of the previous novels, it breaks some new ground. Without ruining the suspense, I will intimate that Brother Eaudulf plays his most major role, Fidelma herself makes some wrong assumptions, and the good Sister finds herself in an unaccustomed position for a time.

And, for the traditional-spirited, the story carries the usual Celtic lore of the period, delves into the usual intrigue, and has you wondering who done it till the final pages. As I said, I've read them all, and recommend each book of the series, especially this one, to one and all.

5 out of 5 stars Ignorance is bliss.......2001-08-25

I don't have the Sister Fidelma background, nor the Celtic background. I picked it up this book on a whim. It starts out a bit slow, but picks up steadily. I wish there would've been a pronounciation guide for all the Celtic names---they're always a phonetic challenge. As to the story---I thought it was good. I know my fellow reviewers sound pretty unimpressed, but it was a good mystery. I appreciate that it was solved with the main characters, not so much new character crap in the end, or a weird twist at the end that made it implausible. I appreciate that! As to Fidelma and her fellow christian, Eadulf, well, name me one murder slueth who isn't cold and boring? The main characters always seem to be pretty----typical....with the sidekick just a wee bit more interesting. Well, as for the plot and story, etc. Sister Fidelma stumbles upon a grisly murder. Whodunit? Follow her to the intimidating kingdom in the valley and find out....twists and turns, the suspicions, the contempt, the theology, makes for an entertaining read. I'm almost tempted to read the others in the series. Almost..... Isn't it unusual to have a mystery set in 7th century Ireland? Quit complaining and appreciate someone's writing something decent out of the "Dark Ages!"

    3 out of 5 stars That Fidelma's kind of a stiff.......2001-08-10

The interesting subject matter, and honestly, the way the paperback looks and feels, made me pick it up at Target. I have not read any other of Tremayne's works, but I was disappointed in this one. Sister Fidelma may as well be one of the stone statues that the pagan Irish used to erect at their strongholds. Not very sympathetic, and certainly one-dimensional. Her Saxon "sidekick"(what a cliche'!) is no better, obviously trotted out to show the "typical" Church response to perceived superstition and pagan ritual. I know diehard mystery fans (which I am not)probably don't care about the nitpicky details, but if you're looking for a novel of ancient Ireland that rings with authenticity and not tedious pedantic observations of life in "Dark Age" Ireland, then run, don't walk to Morgan Llewellyn.

An engaging tale of Romans 8:28. Stephanie Grace Whitson creates a haunting story of hope in the midst of death, peace in the midst of war, comfort in the midst of loneliness. An encouragement to anyone walking in their own valley of shadows. --Lisa Samson, author of The Church Ladies.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting, dramatic Christian love story.......2001-03-17

Valley of the Shadow, the first book in the Dakota Moons series, is set in a sad time of Indian history, and is an exciting, emotional and mysterious story of missionaries to the Dakota Indians.

Simon and Ellen Dane and their two children are serving as early missionaries. The historical focuses on the good and the bad Indians, Dakota and Sioux and the white man's attempt to reach them with the Gospel.

The central character is a half- breed Dakota girl, Genevieve LaCroix. She is pulled between her loyalties to the whites, the Indians and the missionaries. Whitson very thoroughly depicts the complicated relationship between the white missionaries and the Indians. Land, heritage, religion and culture enters into the clash which results in horrible bloodshed on all sides.

A haunting love story unfolds between Gen (Blue Eyes) and a young, energetic activist Dakota, Two Stars. Fighting to remain a brave and strong warrier, Two Stars becomes a changed man due to the influence of the Christian missionaries. His best friend, Otter, now becomes his arch enemy and is central in the attempt to destroy his future with Blue Eyes.

Central to the books' violence and heartbreak is the great Minnesota Sioux Uprising.Turncoats are common among both Indian and white and survival depends on not only age and phyical strength, location and weapons, but whom you trust and who trusts you.

A beaded necklace with a cross in the middle keeps reminding Gen of her Indian heritage and binds her to the handsome Dakota warrior, Two Stars. However, Gen and her 2 charges are captured by unfriendly Indians. Two Stars risks his life repeatedly for the whites, the good Indians and for his love, Blue Eyes (Gen).

A fast moving love story that survives the impossible suddenly has the bottom drop out and leaves the reader in tears - hoping....and waiting for Book 2 in this series, "Edge of the Wilderness."

4 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the sequel!.......2001-02-10

Beautiful Genevieve LaCroix is eighteen years old when her father brings her to Renville mission in Minnesota to receive an education from Rev. Samuel and Ellen Dane, the white missionaries struggling in their ministry to the Dakota in that area. Daughter of a French nobleman and granddaughter of a valiant Dakota warrior, Gen is frustrated by Rev. Dane's unspoken inferences that all things Dakota are "bad." Mrs. Whitson weaves together the strands of Gen's discovery of faith, her love for Two Stars, a Dakota warrior (and his separate journey to faith), and Rev. Dane's spitiual odyssey as he learns to reach out to the Dakota with love rather than pride against the backdrop of the Minnesota Sioux Uprising of 1862 and the year or so preceeding it. Gen, Ellen, Rev. Dane, and Two Stars each have their own path through the Valley of the Shadow; and this tale takes the reader along with each of them as they suffer and triumph. This story is told with great sensitivity and respect for the Native Americans who were defrauded of their lands to allow the great rush for cheap land. Valley of the Shadow is a gripping tale on its own; but reading Mrs. Whitson's excerpt from the sequel at the end of the book makes me more than anxious to read Book 2 of the Dakota Moons Series!

5 out of 5 stars Charlotte Hughes is awesome! .......2005-03-05

I chanced upon these older books written by C. Hughes before she started writing her comedy romance books. I LOVED them! This book was suspenseful and thrilling with a touch of her humor rolled into the plot. Although the book was scary, I still found myself smiling at some of Hughes' slight humor. I do think you would love these and I wish Ms. Hughes would write more of these types of books. I am currently reading Night Kills (another one of her early suspense novels--it is excellent, also) this is such a talented author! I am tempted to write her website begging her to write more like these! Maybe my wish will come true!

    4 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2003-12-02

Boy I wish I could think of the fast comebacks Meg did! She cracked me up, never missed a beat. The mystery was a little lacking but the comedy (Meg's mother for example) made up for it. I did have some unanswered questions though. Why did Clay marry Becky? Why did they get divorced and why did he pay her so much to get out of the marriage? How did Meg and Clay leave things between them when she left town? Oh well, guess we never get all the answers but definitely an enjoyable book.

    2 out of 5 stars I didn't finish it.......1999-12-18

I enjoyed the author's sense of humor, but found it grating after a while. The characters did not seem real to me. Instead, they were overdone and somewhat stereotypical. It felt like the main character was trying too hard to amuse us with her witty take on everything. I hate not to finish a book that I have purchased, but I gave up on it. The storyline definitely had potential, but I wouldn't recommend this for people who prefer more serious suspense novels.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......1999-02-19

I loved this! This has my vote for one of the best books of the year

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible!!.......1999-02-03

I loved it! After reading two other books by Charlotte Hughes, I picked this one up and didn't want to put it down until the story ended!

        Book Description

Shadows on the Land is the third and final volume of the Corrales Valley Trilogy. The story resumes near the turn of the twentieth century, and follows the final tragedy of the Bonneau brothers and the coming of age of Gaetano Perna.

After being wounded in the trenches of France, young James Parrish returns home to marry lovely Emily MacKenzie. They move a small herd onto Corrales land and put down roots as the first Anglos in the village. With the help of her husband's grizzled cowhands, Emily learns the ranching business.

In the "20's and 30's," bootlegging and racial hatred impact upon the people of the village. Little Rueben, the lame son of Amos Apodaca is helped by the infamous Al Capone, while Gaetano Perna's son, Santo, runs afoul of the ruthless Chicago gangster. The Parrish ranch is the scene of murderous vengeance as the Ku Klux Klan spread their message of hate and fear throughout the Southwest.

Finally, there is the shock of Pearl Harbor. Young friends Joe Apodaca and Holt Parrish find themselves swept up in the horror of the Bataan Death March, while Holt's younger brother, Lee, pilots a B-25 over the jungles of Burma, and crippled Rueben is an awed eyewitness to the dawn of the nuclear age in the desert wastes of Alamagordo.

        5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2007-02-14

Don't plan to do anything else once you start this book. It's a wonderful thriller with lots of interesting plot twists!

5 out of 5 stars Another Fantastic Read.......2006-11-08

Ms. Hunter has written yet another superb novel with Shadow Valley. I really am in awe of her talent, and consider her to be one of the best writers in America today. Thus it is that when I read nasty, one star, reviews of her books, that I am forced to conclude that whomever posted it has got to be a jealous, frustrated, would-be author. What a shame.

        5 out of 5 stars Suspense..........2006-02-16

Many people tend to think of Gwen Hunter as writing Romantic Suspense. If that's what you're looking for, don't read this book. Sure, there's an emotional connection between two people, but this book is basically a suspense novel, not a romance. But if you're looking for a search-and-rescue story that will have a fure characters you'll purely hate, as well as some remarkable and admirable ones, this book's for you.

1 out of 5 stars so sorry I wasted my money!.......2005-08-18

I read over 200 hundred pages of this book, and finally skipped to the end to see what happened. Book was boring and confusing!

5 out of 5 stars Should have read it sooner.......2005-08-07

I'm a big fan of this author's Dr. Rae Lynch series so I was disappointed that her latest was not a Dr. Rae book. After having it sit on my shelf for months I finally read it. What a great read. It is a very engrossing thriller and it did not disappoint me at all. I liked the characters and I'm a big fan of secondary characters and this book had several I loved. I liked the look into the world of SAR and I'm glad it was the main focus of the book. There was a romance storyline but it was just enough to enjoy without being over done.

I'm really glad that I finally read this book.
