5 out of 5 stars Riveting & Sobering.......2007-07-09

One night on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean, the director of a new documentary about a small town in Tennessee remembering the Holocause would both show the film and answer questions. As a native Tennessean I both anticipated and dreaded this, assured that again we would be protrayed as NPR so often does - racist, poor, ignorant, fundamentalist or a combination of the above.

Surprise, Surprise. I was blown away, absolutely stunned at the story and the depiction of a rural Southern town as it slowly encounters the outside world. What wonderful teachers are still around! The suggestion that these all-white, all-Protestant, rural students should undertake an endeavor to break out of their shell seemed to come out of the blue and appeared the most incongruous project possible. Yet, it succeeded and admirably so, The documentary traces the parth, from baby to giant steps as the idea evolves into something none of the participants foresaw. It is and always will be a reminder of Dark Days. I only wish the Soviet and Chinese social experiments that murdered over tens of millions were remembered and memorialized in this way!

As the children and the town learn about Jewish life in Europe and the story of the Holocaust, we learn about them, their lives and their lifestyle that seems strangely satisfying in its simplicity and slowlness. Others become involved - survivors, politicians, two Germans who manage to obtain an actual railroad car used for transporting Jews to concentration camps. Businesses pitch in, individuals donate and a living memorial is designed and stands today almost as a shrine. The paperclips (representing a victim) came from all over the world, from rich and famous, young and old, rich and poor.

Alas, some never learn. At the end, the director was bombarded with questions and suggestions that townsfolk were "really" against the project or secretly racist or did not understand. He said he wanted to make something very clear: He had been in the town over two years and never heard a racist remark nor a single ill word against the project. The people were as nice and down to Earth as they appeared on screen. I felt deep vindication and overwhelming relief. The director, being from the North, was shocked at the casual hospitality of total strangers offering advice and friendship. In this age of increasing anti-Semitism in Europe once again, it is important to ponder the consequences that such speech for whatever reason may bring.

An amazing and uplifting narrative that restores one's faith in humanity and ignites hope for the future. It should be told in every school in the nation and the teachers and children that participated in this project deserve medals. A MUST read.

Book Description

Fearless counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp is called upon to fight against the world's most deadly terrorists in this harrowing political thriller by New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn.

It's just seven days before Memorial Day, and the nation's capital is buzzing with last-minute preparations for the unveiling of the magnificent new memorial honoring the men and women who fought in World War II. Despite the hopeful energy of the city, Mitch Rapp senses trouble. A spike in CIA intelligence has pointed to a major terrorist attack on the United States. Now it's up to Rapp to pull out all the stops.

Rapp immediately leaves for Afghanistan, where he leads a special forces unit on a daring commando raid across the border into a remote Pakistani village. Their target: an al Qaeda stronghold. Within a subterranean room, Rapp and his team discover a treasure trove of maps, computers, files, and bills of lading for multiple freighters heading to U.S. ports -- all pointing to plans for a catastrophic nuclear attack on Washington, DC.

Information is quickly relayed back to CIA headquarters, and a nuclear emergency support team scrambles to the scene. In a few hours, the freighters have been located and disarmed and the danger has been averted. Or has it?

Despite all the backslapping and congratulations, Mitch Rapp can't shake the feeling that the operation seemed just a bit too easy. Rapp follows his instincts on a quest to unearth the whole truth. What he finds is truly terrifying, and with Memorial Day closing fast, Rapp must find a way to prevent a disaster of unimaginable proportions.

Packed with the heartstopping action and political intrigue that Vince Flynn's fans love, here is a stylish thriller exalting America's past battles for freedom as well as its continued fight for peace.

4 out of 5 stars Typical Rapp Book.......2007-09-26

I thought this was the best book so far in the Mitch Rapp series. The premise seems very plausible ... nukes smuggled in to the US. It is similar to the others in that the politicians once again get in the way. At least his wife wasn't featured in this book! While the outcome is predictable, it is an enjoyable ride along the way.

As with the previous books in the series, you can't help but think about what really goes on behind the scenes in Washington ... how much are we really told??? How close are the terrorists to striking us again?

The nice thing about Vincy Flynn is that each books works as a stand alone even though the same characters are featured. He gives enough background for the reader to know the players.

Overall I really like this series of books and will faithfully continue to read the rest of the series.

Happy Reading / Vote Libertarian!

5 out of 5 stars Mitch Rapp For President!.......2007-07-24

This is one terrific read. I'd had it sitting on my shelf for months and months without picking it up to read. Finally, one night, after not being able to get into any of the current books on my nightstand I picked this one up, and boy am I glad I did. I literally had a 2 day reading bonanza with this one. Scary, thrilling, realistic (okay somewhat), and set in today's world. Forget any of the bozos running for president currently in both parties, let's elect Mitch Rapp as President! Vince Flynn, you have earned a reader for life with this one. I can hardly wait to read the next adventure of Mitch Rapp. Pick it up and get going....go on what are you waiting for?

4 out of 5 stars Well written and read.......2007-07-23

I love to listen to Vince Flynn books when I am driving from one end of the state to another. Wish there were more out there like him.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining terrorist thriller.......2007-07-02

My last terrorist thriller was by the master Nelson DeMille and so perhaps my rating and viewpoint are nudged a bit. Flynn gives us the secret agent novel the way Grisham gives us the lawyer novel. I prefer Turow over Grisham, but it doesn't mean I don't enjoy the latter.

I also prefer the first person viewpoint that gives DeMille books their flavor. I feel like the protagonist is a friend when I read his works. The Flynn model of showing us the main character through the eyes of others is a weaker form, in my opinion.

In any case this book deals with terrorists bringing nuclear weapons into the states, which should be a concern of everyone, but sadly isn't. Just today I read an editorial in my local paper written by a journalist in the UK. He thinks that those of us that believe that the terrorists are a major concern are stupid. He feels we are fools being brainwashed by the Bush administration. I can complain about many things being done by the current pols in power, however taking terrorism seriously isn't one of them. In fact I think that Flynn hits the nail on the head in this book when he has characters (acting in the book) that stand in the way of fighting terrorism and dealing with terrorists (just like in real life).

I found the story a quick and interesting read, it's certainly not a Clancy novel by any means, but it does get into a little bit of the nuts and bolts of operations and tactics (or lack thereof) in fighting terrorism. If you enjoy fast paced thriller/spy/agent type books, you'll enjoy this one. I'll try some more myself.

1 out of 5 stars This Book is Blatant Right-wing Propaganda.......2007-06-27

This author is a raving, right-wing hack. I couldn't even finish the book. The story line is very simplistic and predictable, and every other chapter involved gagging on the author's simplistic right-wing preaching:

Brown People = Evil
Torturers = Courageous
Democrats = Weak/Shifty

It's impossible to enjoy this book unless you're a big fan of right-wing propaganda. If you're a thinking person who is paying attention, you'll despise this author and abandon the book before finishing it. Definitely a book designed to appeal to knuckle-draggers.

There should be a warning on the cover. I'll never buy another book by this author.

Book Description

September 11, 2001, distinguished Cold War historian John Lewis Gaddis argues, was not the first time a surprise attack shattered American assumptions about national security and reshaped American grand strategy. We've been there before, and have responded each time by dramatically expanding our security responsibilities.

The pattern began in 1814, when the British attacked Washington, burning the White House and the Capitol. This early violation of homeland security gave rise to a strategy of unilateralism and preemption, best articulated by John Quincy Adams, aimed at maintaining strength beyond challenge throughout the North American continent. It remained in place for over a century. Only when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 did the inadequacies of this strategy become evident: as a consequence, the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt devised a new grand strategy of cooperation with allies on an intercontinental scale to defeat authoritarianism. That strategy defined the American approach throughout World War II and the Cold War.

The terrorist attacks of 9/11, Gaddis writes, made it clear that this strategy was now insufficient to ensure American security. The Bush administration has, therefore, devised a new grand strategy whose foundations lie in the nineteenth-century tradition of unilateralism, preemption, and hegemony, projected this time on a global scale. How successful it will be in the face of twenty-first-century challenges is the question that confronts us. This provocative book, informed by the experiences of the past but focused on the present and the future, is one of the first attempts by a major scholar of grand strategy and international relations to provide an answer.

5 out of 5 stars A Scholarly Work.......2007-05-21

Ron Marlar (a retired USAF officer, college professor, school teacher, living currently in Florida)

John Lewis Gaddis is a widely respected professor of history and political science at Yale University. These eminent qualifications should not be held against him but rather demand some significant attention.

Writing as an academician he produces in Surprise, Security, and the American Experience a scholarly work worthy of reading and retention for rereading as time passes. Gaddis draws on historical leaders and events to predict assessment of contemporary leadership based on real history, not the revisionist kind so popular in U.S. schools, colleges and universities of today.

He uses solid documentation to make his appropriately qualified, tentative forecast no doubt unpopular with some due to their political views, biases and prejudices. His book qualifies, therefore, at some level as controversial and is at the same time stimulating of discussion and alternative views.

Compiled from a series of public lectures on American Civilization and Government, Surprise, Security, and the American Experience meets the standards of peer review on that basis alone. Gaddis focuses on the attack of September 11, 2001, and subsequent events that inspire much talk and writing currently.

Unlike some of the other talk and writings by media representatives generally lacking academic expertise, Gaddis provides source documentation suitable for assessment by his peers as well as any other readers. Evidence of the extent of documentation is in the fact that his book as published in hard cover by Harvard University Press is a quick read - 118 pages of text followed by 29 pages of bibliographical notes and a helpful index.

1 out of 5 stars American ethnocentrism.Intellectual weakness.......2006-08-18

John lewis Gaddis displays a lot of the most annoying features of the scholars who want to be remembered for their 'version/vision of history' rather than to take upon the (much more demanding)task of building knowledge through careful-if less appealing- empirical inquiries. This book thus exhibits overtly grotesque (especially when you know the author is a historian at Yale, no less!) instances of ethnocentrism in its generalizations about 'the American experience' and what seems to be haunting Gaddis: the undeniable superiority of American democracy and values over that of other countries. Since the author claims to be taking lessons from history in his analysis of the current strategical posture of the USA, maybe he should have remembered that America, for all its successes, remains an 'unfinished nation' as Alan Brinkley has demonstrated, and that its position of preponderance now is historically contingent to say the least, and owes nothing to a fantasized unique American genius. Ironically, what comes to mind when reading Gaddis is the pathetic pamphlets of French and German intellectuals before WWI, aimed at providing a ready to use intellectual rationalization of the most stupid nationalism.

1 out of 5 stars Numerous holes in the reasoning of Gaddis. One star is too high a rating for this book........2006-04-11

This book could be fun to read if readers do not question anything, however, for the countless analytical minds who critique:
The author, Gaddis, is so caught up in his little world that he fails to understand or consider the obvious, and there are too many examples of this. The book begins with the chapter titled "A morning at Yale" where somehow, I get the immpression Gaddis can't stop talking about how he teaches at Yale university, and his Yale collegues who are so great, blah, blah, blah.
Somewhere in the middle of the second chapter, Gaddis gets over the peak of his ego (it climaxes again later in the book), and starts throwing out historical facts along with answering his own questions that he falsely labels as "America's" questions. Many of his exclamations are written is such a ridiculous pseudo-intellectual manner (along with the unsystematic reasoning that is applied) and it is annoying how he can't stop telling the reader how they feel or what they think, by INEXCUSABLY generalizing. The book ends with a chapter titled "An evening at Yale", which should be retitled to "An evening on Uranus" to match how far our of reality this professor seems to be ; )
If you have to buy this book, then buy it used, because I would hate to see another dime added to what seems like another pompus professor, caught up in his own self-glorifying world.

5 out of 5 stars WELL WRITTEN AND ACCURATE.......2006-01-03

PROVIDES WELL WRITTEN AND ACCURATE ANALYSIS OF U. S. NATIONAL SECURITY THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY'S HISTORY. DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO PANDER TO POPULAR OPINION. CONCISE, YET THOROUGH, HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE PLACED IN JUXTAPOSITION WITH THE EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11TH.

3 out of 5 stars Right idea? Mabye. Wrong tactics - unquestionably.......2005-12-26

What John Gaddis omits is that the strategy he outlines has to be bold, innovative, imaginative and lead by a gifted communicator - George Washington. Lincoln. FDR. Kennedy; all of them come to mind.

Why an occupation and military force in an age where knowledge sharing, intelligence gathering, collaboration and education are the most powerful tools available? Instead of Generals and the Secretary of Defense, shouldn't an effort of this magnitude be lead by people at Google? If a visionary is needed to articulate the goal, why not Tom Friedman?

What would $300 billion do to remake Palestine? the Gaza Strip? Jordan? Afghanistan? What models should we be creating -- one forced on a country already deeply divided over religious matter by a Christian Army? Or one built by kids using the New Tools? Why not bring Oxford and Cambridge, Stanford and Harvard to the Region by way of the Internet? Why not bring 100,000 bright young Arabs to Paris, London, New York, Nebraska? Why not send 100,000 very motivated college graduates from England, Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States -- to teach English and learn Arabic? Farsi? Pustan? What values? what knowledge? would they bring home with them? What relationships would they build? What intelligence would they gain?

The idea of pre-emption is fine if one is willing to use 4th or 5th generation war to achieve the goals of changing minds and winning hearts. The idea of pre-emption is horrible if it is done at the tip of a spear.

Book Description

Developing a theory that seamlessly combines relativity and quantum mechanics, the most important conceptual breakthroughs in twentieth century physics, has proved to be a difficult and ongoing challenge. This book details how two distinguished physicists and Nobel laureates have explored this theme in two lectures given in Cambridge, England, in 1986 to commemorate the famous British physicist Paul Dirac. Given for nonspecialists and undergraduates, the talks transcribed in Elementary Particles and the Laws of Physics focus on the fundamental problems of physics and the present state of our knowledge. Professor Feynman examines the nature of antiparticles, and in particular the relationship between quantum spin and statistics. Professor Weinberg speculates on how Einstein's theory of gravitation might be reconciled with quantum theory in the final law of physics. Highly accessible, deeply thought provoking, this book will appeal to all those interested in the development of modern physics.

5 out of 5 stars Tougher than the Lectures on Physics.......2007-03-21

When I read the lectures on physics, I was hoping to understand the reasoning behind the exclusion principle, and was disappointed to find that RPF felt that this was too complex for undergraduates, so he asked them to take it on faith for the moment.

Here he is talking to a more advanced audience, and explains it - he was right, it's tough. I'm still struggling to understand it, but I have confidence that this is a good book to help.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2007-01-17

From Richard Feynman, with love. Need more to be said? Read it, and read it again. This one can be read all over again once in a while and does not get boring.

5 out of 5 stars Great Lectures. Requires Math Background........2006-02-19

This short book, Elementary Particles and the Laws of Physics, offers two lectures: Richard Feynman's The Reason for Antiparticles and Steven Weinberg's Toward the Final Laws of Physics. These two talks comprise the 1986 Dirac Memorial lectures at Cambridge University. Both presentations are cogently structured and make fascinating reading.

The talks were directed at an advanced audience, one that was familiar with quantum mechanics. Unlike many popular presentations by Feynman and Weinberg, these lectures are not suitable for the general layman.

However, these lectures are accessible to a persistent (perhaps, stubborn) layman with a calculus background and a deep interest in particle physics. I am not a physicist, but I did take my share of physics, chemistry, and math courses several decades ago. I encountered Schrodinger's equation in more than one class, but not relativistic quantum mechanics. However, having recently read Bruce Schumm's wonderful review of particle physics (titled Deep Down Things), I was sufficiently motivated to work my way through both Dirac memorial lectures.

Richard Feynman's lecture, The Reason for Antiparticles, is decidedly the more difficult. Feynman first demonstrates that quantum mechanics and relativity together require the existence of antiparticles, and then shows that they also establish the spin-statistics connection. Within a few pages advanced mathematical expressions appear and then persistently stay in the foreground for nearly the entire talk.

Although understanding Feynman's mathematics is critical for a full and deep appreciation of his exposition, with careful, repeated readings the stubborn layman will have sudden moments of enlightenment and can come away with a deeper understanding of antiparticles and spin statistics. For readers engaged in some self-tutorial readings, it may prove helpful to return occasionally to this classic Feynman lecture to qualitatively measure progress. I have no doubt that, on a deeper level, Feynman's lecture will similarly challenge and enlighten physics majors as well.

Steven Weinberg discusses his speculations on the shape of a final underlying theory of particle physics. Initially, his talk is deceptively easy as few mathematical expressions are used. However, about midway a Lagrangian density equation appears, ratcheting the difficulty several notches, as Weinberg considers a theoretical framework based on quantum mechanics and a few symmetry principles, that is also mathematically consistent with the Lagrangian dynamical principle. After discussion of some limitations of the Standard Model, Weinberg concludes his talk with a somewhat mathematical introduction to string theory.

5 out of 5 stars Physics by two of the very best!.......1999-09-25

As usual, the best physics books are short and to the point, as is this one. The two Dirac lectures may serve as a perfectly good mini physics course all by themselves. I always enjoy a Feynman lecture, and this is no exception. He cuts to the chase without sacrificing the plot. But, I must say, in this case the Wienberg lecture is the better of the two. Weinberg's style has a particular grace & beauty about it that gently exposes the aesthetic meaning of the search for a picture of nature.

5 out of 5 stars Two of the best give great insight into fundamentals........1998-11-18

Feynman yet again gives great insight into the laws of physics, this time exploring the reasons for existence of anti-particles, starting from the dirac equation etc.. Plus some really outstanding photographs, that fella Weinberg will be chuffed to have his name mentioned on the book cover!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-09-28

Being a "baby boomer" from the Vietnam era, I think this book will help explain to my grandchildren about Grandpa and his war time. It is beautifully illustrated and tender. I wish I'd had this book when I went to see the Wall with an 8th-grade girl who made an etching of her Grandpa's name. It may not mean as much to anyone who hasn't been touched directly by the Vietnam war, but it touched my heart.

4 out of 5 stars The Wall Review.......2007-05-23

The Wall by Eve Bunting is an incredible story of remembering. It all starts when a little boy and his father visit the Vietnam War Memorial. The father, who wishes to find the name and remember the good times with him, takes a piece of paper and and pencil and traces the name off of the wall. The little boy, who just wishes his grandfather was there with him, sadly watches another little boy and his grandpa on a walk. This book about rememberance will make you sad until the very end. Eve Bunting does a great job setting the mood at the Vietnam War Memorial. I give this book a thumbs up and believe it's the best children's book ever. Read The Wall by Eve Bunting to find out what happens in the end.

5 out of 5 stars The Wall by: Eve Bunting.......2007-05-22

Loosing a relative can be tough, especially if your close to them, or too young to ever experience or meet them. All you can do is wonder. The book The Wall by: Eve Bunting, is aobut a dad and his son that go and visit the Vietnam War Memorial in memory of the dad's father, or the son's grandfather that died in the Vietnam War. Eve Bunting describes what happens there from a child's point of view. It is very realistic, and makes you feel like you are really there.
This book not only teaches little kid's lessons, but is good for even adults. IT really took me back and made me think. It made me think of how valuable our lives really are, and when we die, who is really affected by it. Also, it taught me that loosing someone you love doesn't always have to be sad, especially if they have died fighting for what they believe in. So, if somebody you know died, think of the positive side. Reading this book may take you back, and let you think of why they were so special.

Book Description

This poignant, first-of-its-kind book celebrates words that define America's storied past and symbolize the drive of its people—from the boardrooms of Manhattan to the farm fields of Iowa. Author Ryan Coonerty highlights profound phrases inscribed on 52 monuments and public sites. Some are famed monuments like the Lincoln Memorial; others are simple or stark places of honor, such as Angel Island, where immigrant Chinese scrawled their words on imprisoning walls.

Etched In Stone unfolds the American saga from four perspectives. "In Praise of Public Lives" (Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King gravesite) celebrates leaders, thinkers, and innovators. "Ordinary Heroes" (Gettysburg Battlefield, Korean War Memorial, Memphis Firehouse) honors ordinary people who did extraordinary things. "Bearing Witness" (Salem Witchcraft Victims Memorial, Clayton Jackson McGhie Museum in Duluth) seeks to remind future generations of horrendous moments in history that must not be repeated, while "A More Perfect Union" (IBM School House, Dexter Gate at Harvard University, New York Public Library) reveals the promises of America—freedom and future.

Stunning images by noted architectural photographer Carol Highsmith enhance the powerful messages and give each site a life and purpose beyond stone. The dramatic interplay of words and photographs makes this a beautiful gift book that will strongly appeal to all readers interested in American history, architecture, culture, and art.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Past.......2007-10-07

This book exemplifies a diverse vision of American history. Illustrated through gorgeous photography and compelling writing, the book captures a sense of beauty and darkness laced throughout our nation's past. From the Blacklist monument in South Carolina to victims monument in Oklahoma City to the Marine Corp memorial in Washington D.C., each monument has a diverse meaning and beauty used to move its visitors. With inspiring form and structure, the book emphasizes these elements and creates an environment for its readers to personally experience this dynamic. When I finished reading this book, I felt challenged by the points it illustrated and compelled to explore these monuments in person. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about their American heritage and its complex history.

5 out of 5 stars Great history lesson.......2007-04-01

This book could be a great teaching tool for young people. It passes over great periods in our country giving a bit of context and sometimes up to date information about each monument and the area it inhabits. The pictures are striking and I feel it could get kids to want to learn more about their nation's history without the constraints of a traditional history book. I know in our family it has prompted quite a bit of discussion about traveling to Washington D.C. Awesome, beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars A coffee table book that resonates.......2007-04-01

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The impressive photography coupled with the author's thoughtful and evocative words make it a great read. It's coffee table-light but at the same time it can be an intense reminder of where our country has been and how we continue to address our history and heroes. I appreciated the diversity of the monuments and some of the lesser known monuments were impressive. The story about the slavery statue in Savannah is inspiring and will hopefully motivate people to organize and get the monument they feel is missing in their area built. I loved the book and it really makes me want to travel to these places.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book!.......2005-05-09

Good Book!

This is no doubt the most comprehensvie interventional pain management book that has been published so far. The value of having it on your bookshelf for quick reference during practice and for continued self improvement as an interventionist is of great significance. However, it is far from perfection.

Part I, "Anantomy and Physiology of Pain: Clinical Correlates" serves as the basic review of Anantomy and Pharmacology of pain processing system. The best chapter in this part is the "Functional Anatomy of the Spine" which contains detailed description and illustration of spine innervation from Atlantooccipital joint to lumbosacral facet, intervetebral discs, spinal nerves, etc. A concise review on techniques on performing selective diagnostic injections of the spinal axis at the end of this chapter including discography, nerve root sleeve approach and facet joint makes this chapter much more clinically relavant.

Part III, "Neural Blockade and Neurolytic Blocks", describes and demonstrates A to Z interventional techniques for blocking both neuroaxial and peripheral nerves. The chapters on radiofrequency techniques are very well written, thorough and easy to follow. However, it would be much better if authors included procedure codes for such procedrues as Rhizotomy of SI joint, RF lesioning of ramus communicans nerve, Ganglionotomy of cervical, thoracic and lumbar levels, RF lesioning of lumbar disc of which the procedural codes are no where to be found. I personally have been struggling to find such codes for the above techniques in my practice. The chapters on performing sympathetic block at various levels are also clearly illustrated and easy to follow, which serve well as the guide for performing these blocks in comparion to other interventional books which lack such content. Nervertheless, Part III also has many weaknesses. In fact, some of the techniques introdueced are rather old and obsolete especially when judging from the progress achieved in interventional pain management by 2001, but unfortunately without being incorporated into this section. E.g, most well trained interventional pain specialists will agree that fluoroscopy serves as "eyes" for the intervetionist, however, some of the chapters discussing neuroaxial intervential techniques do not even have any fluoroscopic image, such as the chapter on lumbar epidural block as well as the one on Sacroiliac joint injection. The worst chapter of all is the "Sacroiliac Joint Injection and Low Back Pain". First of all as mentioned above, it does not have any fluroscopic picture. Secondly, the patient was placed "supine position" instead of prone, yet, the "PSIS" was identified? How can someone identify PSIS from front? Let's just assume this is a "typo" error. Even so, no matter how many times I read through the procedural description, I still could not figure out how this was done. For someone like me, who is Board Certified in American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Board of Pain Medicine, an interventional pain management fellowship trained spine interventionist, who simply could not make sense of such a simple procedre from its description. I wonder whether the author who wrote this chapter really knew how to perform SI joint injection. Maybe it means that this portion should be re-written. This is actually the main reason that I give this book 4 stars rating despite there are many other chapters that are very well written and useful for interventional pain practice. Another shortcoming is that some of the commonly performed procedures such selective nerve root block or transforaminal epidural were nerver even mentioned in Part III, but I think, should have been done so, although in the Chapeter of "Functional Anatomy of the Spine" of part I, selective nerve root sleeve appraoch was briefly introduced, it should also be here in Part III as this is the neural blockade section. Lastly, many of the interventionists consider "Selective Nerve Root Block"(SNRB) and/or Transforaminal Epidural Injection (TFEI) "bread and butter" of spine intervention, yet, this "most comprehensive interventional pain bible" with close to 800 pages does not even have them in its word index, which undoubtedly impacts negatively on its authority.

Part IV & Part V, "Neuroaugmentation" & "Spinal Administration of Opioids & Other Analgesic Compounds" are the best work of this book. They are the best resoures available for spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal drug delivery pump. The authors did outstanding work in writing up these chpaters and introducing to readers step by step the mechanisms, patient selection, implantation techniques and complications. The chapters on intrathecal drug delivery pump has helped my practice tremendously. However, the only shortingcoming is that it does not have chapter addressing Intrathecal Baclofen pump for Spasticity and Spasticity related pain syndromes. There are quite a number of patients with spasticity disorders due to brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, etc, requiring implanted intrathecal baclofen pump. However, there is severe lack of resources in guiding the long term management of such patients, ie, maximal drug concentration, maximal daily drug dosage, drug holidays, etc.

The purpose of this review is also to give the editors some of the feedback from interventional pain physicians like me so as to extract more "nutrients" from its contributors in the future and to make the Third Edition a greater success, in addition to share my experience from learning this book and utilizing what I have learned in the practice of interventional pain managent.

5 out of 5 stars Atlas of interventional pain management.......2000-04-08

Excellent description of each topic. No necessity to refer any further text books on the topic.Excellent description of procedure techniques. Good review of the indications, contraindications and complications of each procedure. Relevant X ray pictures and diagrams.

5 out of 5 stars A Morbid Beauty.......2006-12-03

An absolutely brilliant collection of mortuary photography compiled by the one and only Stanley Burns. The collection is wide-ranging and the photographs range from bland to poignant to artistic to anthropological to fascinating to creepy with stops at all points in between. This collection compiles the original set of images originally released in the hard-to-find and long out-of-print first edition (Sleeping Beauty), and the images are well-known from their inclusion as part of the "Book of the Dead" in the brilliant movie The Others. Burns documents as much as is known about each photograph, littering his commentary with insightful anthropological details that explain the motivation behind the images, and their supreme importance to the people who had them taken. An extraordinary work.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking images!.......2005-04-15

Having grown up with postmortem photography in my family albums, and raised by two Victorian German-Polish Americans, this subject did not seem taboo to me. Both Stanley Burns and Jay Ruby(Secure the Shadow) recognize that these photos are shocking to some, however once over any shock you might feel, the images tell so much more than that of living images..just like any archeological, anthroplogical study..we always learn more from the dead than the living. If you already collect postmortem items, this book will save a lot of money as he has collected the images for you! I only wish the first Sleeping Beauty would go to reprint, heck you have to take out a bank loan to get one! Another good one I mentioned earlier is Jay Ruby's "Secure the Shadow". I am currently buying Michael Lesy's "Wiconsin Death Trip" and would need another bank loan to grab James Van Der Zee's "Harlem Book Of the Dead"..If anyone has a copy of Sleeping Beauty, the first one..and just doesn't want it around the house 'cause it is morbid and they want to sell it fast and ..well..cheaper..LET ME KNOW!!! Dawn.

5 out of 5 stars Sleeping Beauty II ~~ Post Mortem at its Finest~~~.......2004-08-20

If you are interested in historical Post Mortem, then this book is for you.

High quality hard cover book with a black dust jacket.

I have it and i love it~~ I purchased it in late summer early fall of 2002 when it first came out.

The first book is valuable, i wish i could acquire it or afford to someday~~

meanwhile i am happy with the second version.

hope that they put out a third version someday~~

Some people might think that this is eerie, to say the least.

But folks back in the 1800's had little or no money for photos of the living~~

And many people died young back then~~ medicine was still in its infancy so there was not much for cures...

Taking a photo of the deceased was the last earthly time that one would see that person...

So I do understand the need....

Photos of Parents or Parent with Child seem most revered by collectors...

any way, it's a beautiful book, worthy of its subject~~

Book Description

This book is about the Byzantine monuments of Istanbul, most notably, Haghia Sophia. The remains of the land and sea walls, the Hippodrome, imperial palaces, commemorative columns, reservoirs and cisterns, an aqueduct, a triumphal archway, a fortified port, and twenty churches are also described in chronological order in the context of their times. These "monuments" are viewed in relationship to the political, religious, social, economic, intellectual and artistic developments of the Byzantine dynasties.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding survey of the Byzantine remains.......2006-03-28

Great book on the Byzantine remains of Istanbul. Beginning with a topographical analysis of the Greek city, it takes you through the structures chronologically, so you can see what remains from which time periods. Floor plans are useful as well, although surprisingly little was done to upgrade them for this high quality book. Also suffered a bit from insufficient photography - needed more photos and less technical text.

5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Gazetteer of Istanbul's Byzantine Survivals.......2004-09-27

For co-author John Freely, at least, this book represents a summing-up of everything he's learned in more than 30 years of tramping around Istanbul and studying its Byzantine monuments. Assisted by Ahmet S. Cakmak, a professor of Civil Engineering at Princeton and a specialist on the Haghia Sophia, he has produced a comprehensive gazetteer of Istanbul's remaining Byzantine survivals that should gratify the hearts of both academic specialists and of non-professional Byzantium buffs. The book obviously belongs in academic libraries, but it should also find a place in general circulation libraries that want to ensure thorough coverage for both actual and armchair travelers of a city that is an increasingly popular tourist destination.

Over the past five decades, the remaining Byzantine monuments in Istanbul have begun, one-by-one, to struggle back from years of indifference and neglect. Freely and Cakmak do an inestimable service by providing a comprehensive survey of the skeletal remains of the Byzantine city. Even the most obscure Byzantine sites are catalogued, and not merely that - all of them are also illustrated with at least two photographs or nineteenth-century lithographs and frequently a site plan as well. In all, the book includes 51 color photographs in full-page plates and 162 building plans and black-and-white illustrations - mostly photographs, but also including 19th century lithographs where (as with St. John of Studion) the condition of the structure has declined significantly over the last 100 years.

The chapters are arranged chronologically, and each chapter begins with a historical overview that will be useful for the layperson. Haghia Sophia, not surprisingly, receives comprehensive coverage - almost 40 pages of text, 17 plans and black-and-white illustrations, and 8 in color. (If you review this book before leaving for Istanbul, you will have no excuse for missing anything of substance in Justinian's great church.) Monuments in the second rank like the Church of SS. Sergius & Bacchus or the Kariye Camii are also well-covered, with 7 pages on each.

But the book really shines in its treatment of the most obscure (and often precarious) Byzantine survivals. The Kefili Mescidi, which may (or may not) be the refectory of the monastery of Manuel, rates two photographs and one plan, as does another church known as the Manastir Mescidi. A ruined church called the Sinan Pasa Mescidi also rates two photographs, and Freely and Cakmak cover the Isa Kapi Mescidi, even though they report that it consists of merely "two walls of a Byzantine church and the wreck of a medrese by Sinan." And if you've ever wanted to get the skinny on the Atik Mustafa Pasa Camii (Church of SS. Peter & Mark), or the walls that Nicephorus II Phocas erected around the core of the imperial palace complex, or the Palaces of Antiochus and Lausus near the Hippodrome, then this is the book for you.

There's also coverage of a few well-known and important monuments that no longer survive or do so only in fragments or foundations, like the Baths of Zeuxippos, the Church of Anicia Juliana, the Church of the Holy Apostles, and the Hippodrome itself. And the chapter on pre-Constantinian Byzantium fleshes out what is known about the city of Septimius Severus.

This book is expensive, but there are reasons for that. It is printed on very high-quality paper, in part so that the dazzling color photographs will appear to full advantage. Save your pennies, if you must, but this is definitely a book every lover of Byzantium will want to acquire.

Product Description

Parents will help children identify the beauty and hope in all cycles of life as they follow two insect friends, Lea and Nym, and the struggles one of them endures when her friend disappears. This is a tender story about loss and change, written to help parents express their views about life and death. The book may serve many purposes, such as comforting a grieving child who has lost someone close or providing facts about dragonflies to inquisitive minds. Lea's transformation into a dragonfly may even be used as a metaphor for life-after-death. The Dragonfly Door is beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson. The book is cherished by parents, grandparents and teachers. It was recently brought to life as a mini-play in Alabama to help children cope with the loss of their classmates. The following is an excerpt from the book: While Nym slept, she heard Lea's voice saying, "Follow me, Nym. I'm going to show you where I am." "Will I see you again?" Nym asked. "Only when it's time for you to die too," Lea replied. "You won't see me in the marsh ever again. But let me show you what I will look like the next time you see me. Here, close your eyes." Nym closed her eyes. "Now look at me," Lea said. Nym opened her eyes and saw ...

5 out of 5 stars The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson.......2007-09-07

The debut children's picturebook of author John Adams, The Dragonfly Door dares to confront serious topics - of loss, death, grieving, and transition. Nym and Lea are two close insect friends, but one day after Nym yells at Lea, Lea disappears. Nym searches everywhere for her missing friend, and can't find her. At last Nym falls asleep, grief-stricken, and finally hears Lea's voice one more time. "'I died and went to this special place,' Lea said, her voice full of love. 'But I didn't want you to leave,' Nym pleaded. 'I'm sorry I yelled.' 'I know you're sorry,' Lea assured her. 'I left because my water nymph body died while I was picking flowers in the reeds, not because you yelled.'" The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson illustrate this highly recommended picturebook for sharing the bittersweet realities of life with young people.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel's Reading Excellence Review: Helps children understand nature's life cycle.......2007-05-10

John Adams brilliantly invites the reader into the world of Nymphs and Dragonflies to explore the changes that take place when Nym's friend goes to a special place.

When I had lost a family member I had read a wonderful story called, "The Water Bug Story." John Adams adds a fresh approach to this story by focusing on friendship loss and giving a voice to his characters. With the help of Gibson's eye-catching nature illustrations, "The Dragon Fly Door" answers general questions surrounding loss, such as feelings about loss, what happens to the nymph's body when he dies, and how a nymph is transformed into a dragonfly.

Adams creatively normalizes typical friendship rivalry and takes the reader on a nature journey to discover that one chooses to resolve conflict, loss, and changes in different ways. Adams concludes the book with uncomplicated educational facts for the inquisitive science mind.

This is a great educational tool for parents, grandparents or professionals to use to help explain the uncontrollable life cycle changes and loss.

5 out of 5 stars A Message of Hope for Children Who Are Grieving.......2007-02-26

As President of a nonprofit organization that reaches out to those who are grieving, I was very pleased to read a book such as The Dragonfly Door. This book provides a much needed way to offer children (and adults) a message of hope following the death of a loved one.

Children can relate to the playful nature of Nym and Lea who are the two young nymph friends, the sorrow of Nym when Lea dies, and the comforting feeling when when Nym realizes that he will one day see Lea again as a dragonfly, when he too has made his transformation into a dragonfly.

Our nonprofit organization recommends this book so highly that we have decided to make it available for purchase at all of our events.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and excellent for all who grieve.......2007-02-18

I received this wonderfully beautiful book on the 8th anniversary of my son's graduation to Heaven ... that evening, I was able to read it with his daughter, who is now 9... I believe she gained another understanding of her Very Own Daddy in a beautiful place that we have not seen just yet ... and though she already knew he is waiting for her, this was another good reminder of that ... I was unaware of the dragonfly's life cycle and was so blessed to see how it seemingly parallels this life and the next. Thank you, John, for a wonderful way to help us all in our continuing journey with grief and the Hope we can have.
