Book Description
Resiliency - the ability to adapt to life's changes and crises - is the key to a healthy, productive life. Unfortunately, it's all too easy to get bogged down by feelings of anger and helplessness. Awesome book.......2007-09-06
This book has been reviewed in detail enough. I can only add my own personal experience. Seibert wrote a simple concise book that pulls no punches and provides an effective plan to help change one's mindset from that of a depressed anxious victim to that of a person who dosen't let things control how they feel without putting up a heck of a fight first.
The Resiliency Advantage.......2007-01-12
After a challenging year in which I have dealt with injury, financial devastation, and diabolical bureaucracy, it was great to be reminded, once again, that the reason I have thrived is largely because I exhibit 100% of the personality traits of a 'survivor'! The exercises included in this book are brilliant and I have recommended the book to many people, including my rehabilitation physician - who has thoroughly enjoyed my approach to everything but is still trying to figure me out! Should be required reading for all high school students and for anyone who is serious about tapping into real human potential. Thanks Al !
Useful.......2007-01-11
This book is very useful for everyone. After all, each of us meets with many challenges everyday.
A practical book the provides valuable tools for confronting life's difficult challenges!!!.......2006-12-30

Self-rate yourself on a scale from 1 (meaning little agreement) to 5 (meaning strongly agree) on the following ten items:
(1) In a crisis or chaotic situation, I calm myself and focus on taking useful actions.
(2) I'm usually optimistic, seeing difficulties as temporary and believe things will eventually turn out well.
(3) I can tolerate high levels of uncertainty and ambiguity.
(4) I'm good at bouncing back from difficulties and quickly adapt to new developments.
(5) I'm self-confident and have a healthy concept of who I am.
(6) I prefer to work without a written job description since I'm more effective when I'm free to do what I think is best in each situation.
(7) I trust my intuition and "read" people well.
(8) I'm a good listener and have good empathy skills.
(9) I've been made stronger and better by difficult experiences.
(10) I've converted misfortune into good luck and even found benefits in bad experiences.
A low score of (under 25) means your resiliency skills are weak and you would greatly benefit from this amazing, easy-to-read, psychobabble-free book by Dr. Al Siebert, a clinical psychologist and Director of "The Resiliency Center". (`Resiliency' means (i) coping well with ongoing negative change (ii) sustaining good health and energy under constant pressure (iii) bouncing back from setbacks and adversities (iv) changing to a new way of living and working when an old way no longer works (v) and doing all this without acting in harmful ways.)
A middle score of (25 to 45) means your resiliency skills are adequate but probably can be greatly enhanced by using this book.
A high score of (over 45) means you have good resiliency skills and this book will validate many things you are doing right.
This book in a nutshell presents five resiliency "levels" or skills (level four is divided into 4 sub-levels while level 5 is divided into 3 sub-levels) so, in affect, the reader is presented with ten essential resiliency skills that Siebert has distilled from "the emerging new science of resiliency psychology." This book, besides other important things, shows you how to:
(1) Sustain strong, healthy energy in non-stop pressure and change
(2) Bounce back quickly from setbacks
(3) Gain strength from adversities
(4) Convert misfortune into good fortune
(5) Overcome tendencies to feel like a victim, and stay detached from victim reactions of others
(6) Overcome the three main resiliency barriers.
Who is this book written for? Siebert explains: "The resiliency guidelines in this book focus mainly on resiliency in the workplace, but they apply broadly to all aspects of life." (Actually, I think Siebert is being too restrictive in saying that these principles "focus mainly on resiliency in the workplace." Personally, I think these principles are essential to know so as to effectively play the game of life.)
What will this book NOT tell you? It "will not tell you what to do or how to act or think...Resilient people are those who decide that somehow, some way, they will do the very best they can to survive, cope, and make things turn out well." This book helps you develop your own unique way of being resilient by being both self-reliant and socially responsible.
As a physically disabled person, my personal favorite chapter was entitled "Mastering Extreme Resiliency Challenges." Included here are true stories from 9/11 survivors. I feel Siebert outdoes himself in this penultimate chapter.
Finally, this book has some key features. Important definitions, exercises, and other important and essential information are isolated from the main narrative as inserts so as to highlight key ideas. Each chapter is broken up into sections with anecdotes, examples, and true stories instead of having one long narrative. At the end of each chapter are insightful "Resiliency Development Activities" that help you utilize and think about the information from each chapter.
In conclusion, this is truly a helpful and unique book. Discover for yourself why this book was named the winner of the 2006 Independent Publisher Book Awards in the "Self Help" category at BookExpo America (the largest book publishing event in the United States) and why it was endorsed by the past president of the American Psychological Association!!
(first published 2005; preface; 13 chapters; main narrative 200 pages; notes; index; acknowledgements; about the author)

A Review from PMH Atwater, L.H.D., Ph.D. (Hon.).......2006-11-10
This book is all that it says it is, a veritable how-to in handling today's pressure and challenges, and doing it in a way that enhances your life while enabling you to dissolve much of the stress that tends to cripple. It is a book for the "right now" of life, specific suggestions for specific situations, lots of stories, ideas, even "resiliency development activites"at the close of each chapter. What peaked my attention, though, were the chapters from nine on, covering things like "Integrating Your Paradoxical Abilities," "Allowing Everything to Work Well - The Synergy Talent," "Strengthening Your Talent for Serendipity," "Mastering Extreme Resiliency Challenges," and "Our Transformational Breakthrough." Here Dr. Siebert is addressing, among others, those people who have had a near-death experience or a similar type of impactual transformation of consciousness. And what he has to offer is most incredible, real help for those who may need it or who can use a friendly nudge in the process of integrating such experiences. Recommended reading. --From Dr PMH Atwater [...]

This Old House meets Murder, She Wrote in this Sarah Graves mystery set on the coast of Maine. Jacobia Triptree, onetime financial advisor to the Mob, finds her quiet retreat shattered by the unwelcome discovery of a dead man in the Victorian pile she is in the midst of restoring. That he has an ice pick in his forehead only confirms her suspicion that the death was brought about by something other than natural causes. When her closest friend, Ellie, confesses to having done the deed, Jacobia is convinced she is lying and determines to save Ellie from herself by finding the real killer.
The victim turns out to be a local boy who'd done well enough to be featured in the pages of Fortune magazine. Ellie's ostensible reason for her uncharacteristic violence is that he bankrupted her parents. Between bouts of waterproofing the basement and replacing floor joists, Jacobia sets out to find a more believable motive and murderer.
The mystery itself is not that complicated, and as Jacobia digs deeper under her house and into the past, the truth eventually surfaces. Graves sufficiently amuses, however, with delightful characterizations of Jacobia's former connections and the local heroes who assist her in her projects of rescuing Ellie and putting her house together. Jake's asides regarding the stock market, as well as the details of home restoration, also provoke the occasional smile. Graves is at her best delineating the tension between the small town's good guys and the federal investigators (and tourists) from far away. A gentle read, despite the shadow of the Mafia, and entertaining enough for bedtime diversion. --K.A. Crouch
Book Description
dead cat bounce n. Stock market jargon for a small, temporary rise in a stock's trading price after a sharp drop.
Since she bought her rambling old fixer-upper of a house, Jacobia Tiptree has gotten used to finding things broken. But her latest problem isn't so easily repaired. Along with the rotting floor joists and sagging support beams, there's the little matter of the dead man in Jake's storeroom, an ice pick firmly planted in his cranium.
Not much happens in her tiny Maine town, but that's about to change. Jake's unknown guest turns out to be a world-famous corporate raider, local boy turned billionaire Threnody McIlwaine. When Jake's best friend, quiet and dependable Ellie White, readily confesses to the murder, cops and journalists swarm into snowbound Eastport.
Jake smells a cover-up, and begins poking into past history between McIlwaine and Ellie's family. But someone doesn't like nosy neighbors...and Jake's rustic refuge may become her final resting place.
Customer Reviews:
Too many confessions..........2007-08-26
Jacobia Tiptree and her son, Sam, now live in Eastport, ME. Jacobia's neighbor, Ellie has helped her settle into the town and the community. When Jacobia goes to check the storeroom, she finds a body on the floor. Next thing she knows, Ellie White has confessed to the crime, there's no bail for Ellie, George Valentine is trying to shore up her storeroom and floor to handle the police traffic without caving in. Ellie wants Jacobia's help but doesn't want to see her. Everyone hated the victim, Threnody McIlwaine, including Ellie's father and mother who just lost all the money they had on a stock deal McIlwaine tipped them to. The FBI look like they're steamrolling Ellie to jail, and maybe a death penalty, and Jacobia doesn't know what to do next.
Once more we're afloat on a sea of clues. But these clues only make sense if you know a lot of the background and history of the people and the town. As readers we're in the same boat as Jacobia, who also didn't grow up in Eastport. We learn the ins and outs of the character's history as Jacobia learns it. As an Mainer in exile, I especially enjoy the bits of information that are dropped so casually into the background of the story that allow me to feel like I'm on a mini-vacation as well as helping vicariously to solve a murder.
The characters are believable and, as usual, multi-faceted and hard to predict as are most people. The clues are there and can be seen clearly once the book is finished. Well written with tight plotting, this is an older book well worth another read or finding a new audience if you've not read Sarah Graves before.
Great setting for a mystery.......2007-08-02
Former financial advisor, Jacobia Triptree, has left the urban sprawl of New York for the beauty and serenity of the Maine coast. The serenity is shattered, however, when she discovers a dead body in the old home that she is restoring. The victim is a wealthy but unethical businessman who has a lot of enemies. The police figure that their job is made much easier when Jacobia's best friend, Ellie, admits to the murder. Jake is convinced that Ellie is innocent and she sets out to find the real killer. Sarah Graves and her heroine have a wicked sense of humor which enhances this "cozy", as does the wonderful setting of coastal Maine. The book has some interesting characters, such as the Can Man who picks up old tin cans and has a minimal vocabulary, and Ellie's "mommy dearest", Hedda. There are now 10 books in this series and I look forward to working my way through all of them.
No Cats Where Harmed in the Making of This Book.......2006-01-30
Former stock broker extraordinaire Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree has traded her life of high pressure trades for the peaceful quite of Eastport, Maine, a quiet town on an island almost as far east as you can go. She's bought an antique home in need of great repair and fills her days trying to fix all the problems, from squeaky doors to leaking plumbing and rotten floors.
One day, Jake goes to her storeroom and finds a man dead, lying on the floor. As if it weren't shocking enough to have a stranger dying in her house, her best friend, Ellie White, immediately confesses to the murder.
The victim turns out to be Threnody McIlwaine, a local boy turned corporate raider billionaire. Even given his worldwide fame, Ellie did have a motive. Threnody had just tricked her family out of a fortune, leaving them bankrupt. With the prosecutors ready to act on the case to keep the media happy, Jake realizes that Ellie is going to be railroaded into a long prison term.
There's just one problem, however. Ellie is too quiet to commit murder. Convinced her friend is innocent, Jake sets out to figure out who really killed the man. Even in a town as small as Eastport, the list of suspects is rather long. It will take all of Jake's abilities to sort through the clues to find the truth.
This is the debut of what has become a highly successful mystery series, and it's easy to see why. Jake is a likeable and capable heroine. This is someone who could easily become a friend in real life, and spending time with her is fun. While Ellie isn't in much of the book, she is a likeable character as well. I look forward to getting to know her better in future books in the series. The other towns people we get to know were nice assets to the plot and created a feeling of community I loved.
The only strike against the book is the plot. It seems to meander a bit at the beginning, taking it's own sweet time getting started. Once it does, however, it tells an exciting story with some nice twists that kept me confused until the very end. The title of the book refers to some stock market jargon. Not only is this a reference to Jake's previous job, but it also has an impact on the case.
Even when the plot is slow, the writing style keeps you pulled into the story with its vivid descriptions and laid-back story telling. It fits a story taking place in a small, cozy town and I wouldn't change it for anything.
The setting itself is great. The small town is warm and inviting, even in the middle of the bad storm they face over the course of the book.
Even in the debut, it's easy to see why this series has won the hearts of so many readers. I look forward to visiting Jake Tiptree and Eastport, Maine, again real soon.
Gem of a book!.......2003-10-11
I love reading mystery stories when I'm ready for a light and easy read. I have read quite a few of them and I am thrilled to add Sarah Graves to my "must read" list. Many "light" fiction books feel like you have just eaten cotton candy -- nothing to show for it and still unsatisfied. This book was just the opposite! The characters were well developed, the plot was enjoyable and the writing was very good. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series and sharing my find with other fans of the mystery genre.
What a delightful book to read (either on the beach or in front of a warm fire with a cup of tea) when you just want to have some fun!
Dead Cat Bounce.......2003-02-12
I bought and read this book based on a positive review I had read on the internet and am glad that I did so. The main character, Jacobia, grew on me as I read further into the book, although I have to admit I did not care for her at first, thinking her to be a bit judgmental and a little whiny. I learned to appreciate her and I hope that in the following books, we can see more of her background including her financial work with some questionable characters; now that would make some interesting storytelling. I agree with a previous reviewer in that I found nothing to like about her ex-husband, and everything to like about her boyfried; in fact, I found them almost too one-dimensional (evil ex-husband & perfect boyfriend), but not so much as in many of the cookie-cutter mysteries on the market today. I will definitely be picking up the next books in the series to read in the near future.
Book Description
What are the single most important variables in racquet performance? What racquet and string features combine to provide the most control, comfort, and feel? How can a player create maximum spin? This informative primer answers these and other elusive equipment and performance-related questions that perennially plague hackers and experts alike. A simplified, layperson's companion to the authors' previous work, The Physics and Technology of Tennis, this conveniently sized guide to selecting racquets and strings includes bite-sized explanations of the possible expectations of equipment choices.
Customer Reviews:
Truly technical.......2007-03-27
Technical to a fault, but exacting. Provides interesting, sometimes counter-intuitive information, e.g., on how the tennis ball bounces, and how racquets really perform.
Overhyped.......2007-02-20
This book really wont change your game or provide any revelations. It even has some inconsistences.
Good to know.......2007-01-11
For the serious tennis player or anyone trying to learn more about tennis it's great.
An excellent update to "The Physics and Technology of Tennis".......2006-09-21
A few years back I did read "The Physics and Technology of Tennis." Even though this was a sensational book that gave me the physics knowledge to moonlight as a racquet development consultant, "Technical Tennis" is a great update. "The Physics and ..." consists of a collection of papers that were published in TennisPro magazine between 1993 and 2000. Meanwhile, "Technical Tennis" was published in 2005. Tennis technique and technology have changed since the mid nineties. The authors thoroughly study these changes. They do a great analysis of Sampras second serve that remained a standard even for today's pros. They also analyze Federer's forehand that is a marvel of versatility, speed, and accuracy. Nobody hits a forehand using Federer's technique. But, maybe thanks to this book more tennis players and especially pros will emulate it.
The authors' opinions have become more complex and nuanced over time. In "The Physics ..." they stated unequivocally that heavier racquets gave you more power, control, and felt better all around than lighter ones. Now, they indicate it depends somewhat on your playing style. And, they come up with an all around "ideal" weight of 342 grams or 12 ounces. That is heavier than most recreational racquets sold in store. But, it is not heavy vs what the pros use. On page 55, they also indicate that to reduce the force on your arm there are five things you can do:
1) Use a heavier racquet;
2) Use a head heavy racquet;
3) Use a more flexible racquet (not a widebody one);
4) Lower the string tension;
5) Use a softer thicker grip.
These are different recommendations than in "The Physics ..." book. Back then they recommended a stiff racquet.
The authors also study in greater details the relationship between racquet weight and ball speed. And, how the relationship is different for serves vs groundstrokes.
If you read "The Physics ..." book, you have to read this one to update your knowledge. If you have not, you don't need to read it, and can jump in straight into this one. It will provide you with all the physics you care about. This book is really not dummed down much. Be ready for that. At times the physics discourse gets pretty dry and challenging. But if you digest it, it's pretty interesting stuff.
Read this book before you buy a racket or take a lesson........2005-10-26
This book cuts through all the marketing hype and gets to the physics of rackets, balls, and courts. Explains what matters when selecting a racket. Helped me find a racket that helps my tennis elbow. The previous book was very long. It also was redundant and contradictory in places. This book solves those problems.
Of particular interest is the section on how to deliver spin. Two things were very interesting:
1) most modern forehands get their topspin not by swinging dramatically upward, but by swinging fairly falt but closing the racket face.
2) There are no topspin serves, only slices. Also, the swing is dramatically outward from 8 to 2 oclock. this greatly simplifes the overly complex instruction that is commonly proferred.
GREAT book.

Dave Robicheaux, the Louisiana cop who's easily one of the most complex and compelling protagonists in mystery fiction, confronts his own demons as well as a brutal adversary who might be the devil himself in this dark thriller. This is classic James Lee Burke, the master stylist, writing at the top of his game:
"I wanted to drive deep into the Atchafalaya Swamp, past the confines of reason, into the past... on the tree-flooded alluvial rim of the world, where the tides and the course of the sun were the only measures of time (and) all you had to do was release yourself from the prison of restraint, just snip loose the stitches that sewed your skin to the hairshirt of normalcy."
The plot hinges on a pair of murders that don't seem to be connected--a mobbed-up prostitute and a pretty young teenage girl--and the Cajun blues singer accused of both crimes. Robicheaux believes that Tee Bobby Hulin, the gifted musician whose original composition provides the title for this brilliantly realized Gothic crime novel, is innocent. Proving it puts him in the sights of a vicious old overseer named Legion, whose almost supernatural powers nearly drown Robicheaux in the swamp of his own addictions. The narrative proceeds slowly, but Burke's dedicated fans won't begrudge him one beautifully turned phrase, gloriously limned description, or insightful characterization: they just don't get any better than this one. --Jane Adams
Book Description
New Iberia, Louisiana, is reeling from a one-two punch of brutal rape-homicides, and drug-addicted blues singer Tee Bobby Hulin has been tagged as the prime suspect. No stranger to bucking popular opinion, police detective Dave Robicheaux senses it's not Hulin behind the atrocities. But while placating a town on fire for swift revenge, Robicheaux must face his own demons -- an ultimate reckoning with Legion Guidry, a diabolical figure whose hardcore brand of violence left Robicheaux humiliated and addicted to painkillers. With his longtime friend, the boozing and womanizing Clete Purcel, Robicheaux treads among land mines of injustice, mob payoffs, and deadly secrets, all the while guessing: whom can he trust -- and whom should he fear?
James Lee Burke brings back his acclaimed hero Dave Robicheaux in this powerful New York Times bestseller packed with suspense and menace.
Download Description
"James Lee Burke, acclaimed by critics as "America's best novelist," "the Graham Greene of the bayou,"and "a poet of the mystery novel,"" returns with his popular character, Dave Robicheaux, in a novel rich with atmosphere, ripe with menace, and filled with the kind of crackling dialogue that has made Burke a consistent New York Times best-selling author. When a beautiful teenage girl is killed, the victim of a particularly savage rape, New Iberia, Louisiana, police detective Dave Robicheaux senses from the very start of the investigation that the most likely suspect, Tee Bobby Hulin, is not the actual killer. Though a drug addict and general ne'er-do-well, Hulin just doesn't fit the profile for this kind of brutal crime. But when another murder occurs -- this victim a drugged-out prostitute who happens to be the daughter of one of the local mafia bigwigs -- all clues once again point to Tee Bobby Hulin, and the cries for arrest become too loud to ignore. The dead girl's father, however, prefers to take matters in his own hands and sets out to find -- and punish -- the killer himself. But before Robicheaux can solve these crimes and bring the killer or killers to justice, he is forced to battle his own inner demons, including a painkiller addiction, a habit that begins as the result of a brutal and humiliating beating he suffers at the hands of the mysterious and diabolical character known as Legion. A fixture in the area for years, Legion was once the overseer on a local sugarcane plantation and now gets by doing odd jobs. In temperament, however, he's still the malicious and malevolent bully he always was, a man defined by evil and seemingly possessed with supernatural skills of survival. Gothic, dense, brutal, touching, and always compelling, Jolie Blon's Bounce is classic storytelling from a writer who has been dubbed "the Faulkner of crime fiction."
Customer Reviews:
A Story of Good versus Evil.......2007-06-23
Like many of the Dave Robicheaux books, this one is filled with violent people, many of whom the best can be said is that some day they will kill and be killed by one of their own kind. It's the in-between time that the rest of us have to be fearful. This one starts out with the murder of two woman in a similar way, both have been beaten brutally and raped prior to being murdered.
But the real story is the one that follows Dave around during the whole of the investigation into the murders, and that is how do you deal with real evil without becoming part of the pattern. Dave almost goes off the wagon by taking pills after he is brutally beaten by a man who is proud to go by the name "Legion". Legion is one of the devil's disciples/minions who is mentioned in the "Book of Revelations". So there is a lot, a lot of allegory going on in this book about people and the sources of evil and what people do to aide and abet evil.
In the end, the story plays out pretty much the way you expect it to if you've read any of the previous books by JLB, but this one ends with a quirky bit about a criminal that Dave calls the "Easter Bunny". EB is an albino who doesn't just break into peoples houses he does so for many reasons. In one segment Dave tells how EB broke into a Pet Store, and stole two large South American parrots. He then breaks into the house of a well-known ex-KKK leader (who is overseas), steals his computer records (which he sends to the FBI and IRS) and lets the birds loose in the guys house (they of course leave 'deposits' all over the place). I hope he brings this character back sometime in the near future.
All in all, though it is a little heavy handed at times, and has more violence than I think is necessary (IMHO), it's an enjoyable story.
Great story and memorable narration in audio.......2007-05-19
I won't add to the well written reviews and comments written so far. I mainly want to refute the reviewer who complained about the narration of Mark Hammer. It took a few minutes to get into but I think it's perfect for the bayou setting. The reader's voice seems etched with all the cares and woes of the characters who are woven through this fine novel. I hung on his every word and replayed many tracks to cement the impact of the incredible writing as transformed by the cadence and haunting voice of the reader.
A Good Addition.......2007-04-10
This is a good entry in the Dave Robicheaux series - especially if you do the audiobook. You would get to hear Jolie Blon's Bounce and an interview with James Lee Burke. None of which takes away from the quality of this book! It's just a great read, although you do well to read this series in order - it's like a saga, and if you have the thread of the development of the characters and their lives, the whole series takes on more depth. Each book is a good stand-alone, however.
Great gothic noir, exactly what I was looking for.......2006-11-13
I read this book because I had a very specific craving for a southern gothic murder mystery. Unbelievably, it fit all of my criteria and delivered a rich, absorbing narrative. The gothic element (the metaphysical presence of good and evil) is wonderfully understated, getting your skin to crawl a little but leaving plenty to your imagination. The description is intricate, and the characters, while perhaps a bit predictable given the noir genre, are complex enough not to be boring. I would recommend it as a book that takes the good aspects of mystery and literary fiction and meets somewhere in between.
If James Lee Burke..........2006-09-21
...were a plantation overseer, his writing skill can be likened to that gunbull using a lash to lift a whisker off of your face, but not leaving a mark. It gets your attention real fast.
...Jolie Blon is the exact right mixture of grit, elegance, humanism, and a hint of the supernatural that comes together as more than the sum of its parts.
...after reading a dozen of his novels, I am convinced that James Lee Burke is perhaps our greatest living American Novelist.
...and like Elmore Leonard, he makes it seem so easy when you know it is oh so hard.

Book Description
New mothers and health care practitioners alike will benefit from these postpartum exercise ideas. Photos depicting full-body stretching and strengthening workouts are complemented by helpful advice on tightening abdominal muscles; squeezing in workout time; spicing up routine exercises using an exercise ball; exercising with baby; and improving posture. Female "taboo" topics are boldly addressed, including urinary incontinence and cesarean and episiotomy scar tissue. Included are 18 unique workouts, 40 strengthening exercises, and 17 stretching exercises, many of which can be performed within 24 hours after giving birth. A flow chart helps users keep track of progress, and a glossary assists with medical terminology.

Much different than other exercise books, a must-have.......2002-08-18
This is a gentle, flexible exercise routine that begins with exercise routines suitable 24 hours after birth that start off with 5 minutes of floor exercises (with no balance ball or other equipment at this point) and 5 minutes of walking.
The goal for the first level of exercises is not to lose weight but to enhance the mothers' physical condition and to enhance recovery after childbirth. There are special exercises to help heal c-section incision area and simple things to do to help prevent c-section scar adhesions. Other exercises help episiotomy site healing, separation of diastasis recti (abdominal muscles) due to pregnancy and exercises for recovering from urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence (which has been linked in a study to be caused by episiotomies).
Another important focus of the book is the goal of not having back pain. The book teaches prevention of back and shoulder injury by teaching proper positions for holding baby, breastfeeding, and lifting baby up, such as when lifting out of crib. Using a stroller is discouraged if the woman has carpal tunnel syndrome due to pregnancy as pushing the stroller can further aggravate the pain and the condition. Use of a front pack baby carrier is recommended as a back-healthy way to carry baby and proper usage of it (so it is comfortable and doesn't cause back pain) is outlined by the author. I have witnessed many people wearning their baby carriers in a way that causes back pain, I encourage everyone to read the manufacturers directions and this authors' directions so using this style baby carrier doesn't cause you pain!
The program progresses in stages up to a 5-star difficulty rating, as the woman desires to get into physical shape with increased aerobic activity designed for fat burning, weight loss and increased muscle strength.
The book features cutout one-sided pages that illustrate an entire workout by name, order, and illustration so the mother can carry it with her for reference rather than propping up the book and trying to keep the book open during the workout. Later in the book are the longer, detailed instructions for each exercise.
There are loads of references to studies on everything from why a vaginal birth is easier on a woman's body to why an episiotomy can cause a woman physical problems to why breastfeeding is beneficial. I was surprised to see so many studies cited throughout the text and in side bar quotes.
Other than some stretching exercises, breathing and abdominal exercies, the baby is incorporated into the routine (but it looks to me that this is only possible when the baby can strongly hold up his/her neck), which is great because doing the exercises won't require mother and baby separation. The exercises can be done in short segments multiple times during the day when the busy mother can carve out these small time segments.
Breastfeeding is portrayed in a positive light, including a photo of the author breastfeeding and with tidbits of positive research about breastfeeding's health benefits and personal opinions of the author about enhancing bonding between mother and baby.
An attitude and emphasis on the woman being the expert of her body is throughout. It begins with self-tests for separation of abdominal exercises, Kegel muscle self tests, etc. and urges the woman to listen to her own body. Using the information in this book the woman can design her own workout schedule and assess her own body's strengths, weaknesses and areas that would benefit from exercising. This book does not promote reliance on exercise clubs, gyms, etc. so this is a low-expense workout. The balance ball that is used in later parts of the text costs about $30 and can be used in the home (which is far less money than most exercise shoes cost).
I especially appreciated that this book does not portray pregnancy or childbirth in a negative light. It is not like other books that almost treat pregnancy as a bad thing for making the woman gain weight and other body changes occur that are negative. It does *not* have the attitude that as soon as the baby is born a mission must begin to get in shape and lose fat. There is no negative language about the physical appearance of the body while pregnant or after the baby is born. The book is more focused on feeling good, developing strong core muscles, and being able to live pain-free.
This is not a killer-workout that requires huge amounts of time and energy; it is definitely do-able at all the stages of difficulty, and will definitely help any mother who uses it.
Recommended for young mothers who may feel overwhelmed.......2002-05-06

Therapeutic, as well as fun for everyone!.......2001-11-24
I highly recommend this book! As a middle-aged grandma, I was initially interested in this book for myself, as I will soon have an abdominal hysterectomy, and will be needing some gentle, yet effective post-op abdominal exercises. I am also an RN/certified fitness trainer, so I have used Caroline Creager's books in the past. I am finding this book to be an excellent source for my clients, especially new moms, and people like myself, needing strengthening after surgery. The section on diaphragmatic breathing is essential for the post-op period. Although this is a postpartum program, most exercises could apply to anyone, as they emphasize strengthening the core, which is fundamental in beginning an exercise program. The exercises and stretches using the Swiss ball would benefit anyone, young and old, as they are safe, functional, and help to improve posture and balance.
But first and foremost, this book is a must for the new mother, full of fun, energy-efficient workouts, demonstrated by Caroline and her baby. There is emphasis on posture, as well as the proper body mechanics in lifting and carrying baby to support your back and prevent injury. The exercises are beneficial to baby as well, aiding sleep, improving strength, balance and socialization. What a great way to interact and bond with your baby! This would be a unique and much appreciated gift for mom and baby.
A great program.......2001-11-21
Finally an excercise program that is written by a mom who understands, that working out is not a priority. Caroline fully understands the time limitation of moms. This has been a great program to get me going again, I feel good about myself. I kept thinking I would start working out, tomorrow, next week, next month etc., but this program makes working out attainable by working it into my day. By starting out with just 10 minutes a day I felt like I was accomplising something, now I do it twice a day and feel like I can add more time. THANK YOU - this is the best and strongest I've felt in a long time!

We seldom realize the degree to which our success depends on how we react to failure. Roger Crawford, a speaker and business consultant who says the physical "inconveniences" he's lived with since birth have taught him to be flexible, argues that thinking resiliently is even more important than thinking positively in getting what we want out of life. While positive thinkers might tell themselves, "I feel happy," even when they don't, a resilient thinker would say, "Right now I feel lousy, but I have it in my power to be happy." Because that's not an attitude that comes naturally to many people, he offers a variety of tips on reframing our internal dialogue. While some of Crawford's advice will sound familiar to readers of achievement-oriented books, those who need a push to continue in the face of adversity will find it in How High Can You Bounce?

Helpful! One of the best on "Resilience".......2007-04-21
Allow me to quote from one of my all time tennis champion favorite Chris Evert on the back cover, "In life, as in tennis, it's the bounce that counts! Roger Crawford shows how resilience is the difference between playing to win and playing not to lose." In short, in case you really want to read a book that talks on resilience, this is it. Highly recommended!
Below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference:-
As humans, we're capable of dealing with only one dominant thought at a time. Therefore, it's impossible to be both resilient and pessimistic simultaneously. You have to choose, and you become what you think about most. People ...call it the "Principle of Dominant Thought". pg 17
Argue for your limitations and they are yours. - Richard Bach pg 18
Positive thinking: I feel happy. (But I really dont)
Resilient thinking: Right now I feel lousy, but I have it in my power to be happy.
Positive thinking: I am successful. (But I'm not)
Resilient thinking: Today I had a setback, but i can turn it around. pg 19
Not: I wont fall below my sales quota this month.
But:I will meet my sales quota this month.
Not: Stop doing that!
But: Do this! pg 20
Whenever you catch youself saying "if only", make a conscious switch to "next time". pg 23
Count the blessings of the day. Practice an attitude of gratitude. pg 27
Suppose you are playing a tennis match and expect to win 55% of the points and lose 45%. That's a 10% spread. What are your chances of winning the match? .....91%. What % point spread would you need to win at least 99% of your matches? ....about 20%. pg 29
Even when you dont feel like laughing, try smiling. That smiling draws positive attention to you and tends to make you and others feel at ease. Smiling conveys self-acceptance and an accepting attitude towards others. It increases others' confidence in themselves and in you. Smiling makes you appear approachable, friendly, relaxed, open and comfortable. pg 45
If you dont periodically ask, "Where am I going?" the groove you're in can become a rut. pg 179
What a great book.......2005-11-07
I love this book, I read it over and over, I cannot get enough of it. This book has taught me how to remain positive regardless of the situation. My new motivational word is now "Resilience". Whenever I am feeling stressed or facing a challenge, I think about what Roger Crawford says in the book and the experiences and examples of so many people given, and I feel better. Great book. I would love to meet him one of these days. I would urge you to recommend this book to anybody who is facing any type of challenge in his/her life.
THANKS!!
Incredibly Inspiring!.......2002-05-16
A book to read over and over. When I am feeling like my self esteem is gone or I am going through a difficult time, I pick up this book and read a chapter or two and get re-charged again. It makes you re-examine all the dreams you ever had and didn't act upon because you thought you weren't talented enough or someone else had discouraged you. After reading this book you will believe "I can really make this happen".

A Norman Vincent Peale for the '90s.......1998-05-05
Crawford brings a refreshing new "bounce" to positive thinking, taking it a step further (higher?) by remodeling it as "resilient" thinking. Excellent. Inspiring. A keeper!
Book Description
Bounce a ball right off your hands. Bounce it off your toes. Try to bounce a beach ball on the tip of your nose! Doreen Cronin and Scott Menchin, who had toddlers all over America jiggling with Wiggle, invite them now to hop, leap, pounce, and bounce to their hearts' content (though not on couches!). Because, after all, it's better to have bounced and bumped than never to have bounced at all.

Fun book, but the quality of the paper was noticeably bad.......2007-06-06
I think the book is fun, and my kids liked it (though I woldn't put it on a favorites list). My problem with the book I ordered from Amazon is the quality of the paper. It's horrible. I read books to my kids all day, and when I opened this hardcover and turned the page my first thought was "the page almost tore!" The pages of this book are of a very cheap, thin paper. Since the book reads quickly, and you have to page through to keep the beat of the words, it's sad that the pages are so easy to tear. I don't think this book will be very lasting...and I'm always hesitant to pull it off the bookshelf and read it because it feels so unpleasant when you turn the pages. I'm sure that sounds silly, but if you get one of these cheap-paper versions, you'll see what I mean!
Bouncing Good Time For Pre-Schoolers!.......2007-05-03
My preference for read-aloud books is ALWAYS for rhyming content, since little ones like the rhythm and, er, "bounce" of such books. This one is a winner, (no surprise there) and I like the illustrations, too (favorites: the cabbages, the ballerinas, and the take on Gene Kelly's "Singin' In The Rain.")
The concept of bouncing into and onto things is such a simple pleasure for small children, and Cronin had the forethought to turn it into a reading pleasure, too.

good book.......2007-01-16
most of the questions in this book are pretty interesting but a good handful are obious ones or not that interesting .. overall good book to pass the time..
Have you ever wondered why...?.......2005-10-18
This is a great little book to leave around the "Throne Room"
to fill a few minutes. Although filled with a lot of little ponderables we have all had,it will never be the final word in this sort of thing since the world is filled with those little questions we have all wondered about. The difference here is that some of those questions get answered. Each question and answer is brief and can be covered in a couple of minutes.
A taste of the questions brought up :
"Why is the shower warmer in the middle?"
"How can a paper clip float?"
"Why do ice cubes crack in your drink?"
"What's the oldest thing alive?"
And finally that question on the cover,
"Why does a ball bounce?"
Like I said,not earth-shattering stuff,but something you've probably pondered.
