A fun read.......2007-08-05
A little girl named Treva tells her story wen she had trouble with trolls. She lives on the slopes of Mount Baldy and was hiking it to visit her cousin who lives on the other side. With her is her dog Tuffi. Trouble happens along the way as a troll will jump out and declare "I want dog"
She tricks them into taking pieces of her clothing but eventually she reaches the top and discovers they still want the dog. She declares she can fly with her skies but needs all her cloths back. She asks for a push but they can't since they are holding Tuffi. She offers to hold the dog and away she skis to the cries of "Dog, Dog, Dog!"
This is a fun little story and my little girl has taken to it. Probably because the artwork is very good!
There is also a small side story of a hedgehog who wanders into the home of the trolls.
This is a sweet well written and drawn story that will make for any child's bedtime reading. Be prepared to hand over the book so the pictures may be viewed.
How To Outsmart Trolls.......2004-11-25
Treva lives on the slopes of Mount Baldy. One day she goes to visit a relative on the other side. She will climb up with her dog and then ski down the other side. But on the way up she runs into the trolls. Each troll she meets is interested in her dog. Treva manages to trick each of them into taking some of her clothing instead (mittens, hat, sweater, boots). But just at the top the trolls decide they still want the dog. Treva has one more trick up her sleeve and winds up same with her dog and all of her clothing. The ultimate fate of the trolls is quite interesting.
This is a very nice story with an intelligent and quick-thinking protagonist. Troll legend has been change a little. There is no mention of the trolls wanting to eat the dog (a la Billy Goats Gruff) but instead to help warm them and act as a pack animal. Their fate is also one I am unfamiliar with. Many stories have trolls turn to stone in the sunlight but this transformation is quite interesting.
The illustrations are just what you expect from Jan Brett; beautiful and packed with detail. Earrings and hair ribbons should be paid attention to as well as the happy hedgehog who invades the trolls' home. A truly delightful story from an author who has written more stories about clothes than you can imagine (The Hat, The Mitten, Armadillo Rodeo, Etc).
WOW, don't hesitate, read this book.......2003-10-29
As parents, bibliophiles, and teachers, we are always on the lookout for good children's books and books with positive girl characters are always needed. This one is fabulous. Treva is smart, creative, courageous, loving, strong, competent and clever. This is exactly the kind of child that we would want our 2 1/2 year old son to be exposed to. It's a fun adventure story that shows how a child can be creative and use their imagination and other intellectual abilities to problem solve and come up with a plan in a tough situation (without resorting to physical force) and then use their physical and creative skills in executing their plan. The last few sentences of the book also add a more abstract, creative idea that expands the depth of the book depending on the age and abilities of the child who's hearing the story. The illustrations are well done - they're good and easy to follow and help the child to understand the story, They also provide additional details and threads for the child to explore. And, something I'm always on the lookout for, it was a great alternative troll story. On the chance that most of his fellow schoolmates would be talking about pirates, superheroes, fairy tale characters and such, I didn't want my son to have no idea what others were referring to simply because we tended to avoid such stories because they tend to be completely objectionable in terms of their values and characters. So, I'm always on the lookout for good alternatives, and this was a very positive way to introduce him to a troll. (As a side note, a good alternative for superheroes is "Max" by Bob Grahm; for pirates try "Pirate Pete", "Edward and the Pirates" and "Pirate Pink"; and there are many fractured fairy tales which are clear winners over the traditional sexist, violent, etc fairy tales, e.g. "The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig", "Wolf" by Becky Bloom, "The Big Bad Wolf is Good", "The Emperor [Penguin] has no clothes", and on video - CinderElmo - where Elmo goes to the Princesses ball). This was my first exposure to Jan Brett and I'm looking forward to more books.
A delightefull tale of an adventurous hike.......2003-10-08
Treva, a girl in Norway wants to go visit her cousin on the other side of a mountain near her home so off she goes with her dog, and her skis straped to her back. Her little hike soon meets with excitement when a troll tries to kidnap her dog! She comes up with a clever scheme to trick this troll, and several more trolls afterwards. At the end, she manages to trick all the trolls again at once, and gets back her mittens, gloves, hat, sweater, skis and of course, her dog!
The illustrations are absoutely beautiful, and really bring life to the story.
Trouble with trolls.......2002-10-31
This book Trouble With Trolls is a great book for both readers young and old. It is about a girl named Treva who decides to take a hike over a mountain to see her cousin. On the way up the mountain Treva runs into some trolls who want her dog,but she tricks them by giving them her boots and things like that. In the end she gets away with her dog and all her stuff back. I enjoyed this book alot myself and if you have kids I'm sure they would enjoy it to.

Customer Reviews:
Good light reading.......2007-08-19
Bored with her office job, Maggie decides to take a chance on working in the retail industry for a self-described witch. Things get really interesting when the witch is accused of murdering her sister. Lots of fun Magnum PI references, possessed Volkswagon bugs, and talking burial urns. Good characters with interesting quirks, light romantic moments.
Excellent for a winter's Day.......2007-08-05
Not as easy flowing as some other witch mysteries, but a terrific cosy mystery. Our heroine gets a new job with a witch and she finds very quickly that she has to chose between defends her new friend or going with her upbringing. The mystery whilst easy to gets who, it is not easy to guess why
Totally "bewitching," and a good mystery, too........2007-06-24
I enjoyed this book so much that it was hard to put down. The characters are intriguing and the murder mystery keeps you guessing. In fact, it left me wanting more to the point that I ran right out to the store to buy the next edition in the series. You might want to just order both books together to save yourself the trip!
This book might not be quite right for you if the idea of ESP and/or witchcraft offends you. Also, the description of the practice of "magick" could be considered a bit enticing to someone who is easily swayed. But if you can take it with an ounce of imagination and fun, it makes for a fun, slightly goosebumpy reading experience. Nothing too scary - just the right amount to make it interesting, but still allow you to get to sleep at night.
An enchanting mystery.......2007-06-21
This new series written by Madelyn Alt is a fresh new perky kind of series. It involves magic, murder, mystery and mayhem. The 4 m's what could be better?
Anyway, the back of the book pretty much tells the plot, Maggie recently gets a job at a charm shop working for Felicity when all of a sudden Felicity is charged with murdering her own sister. Maggie is convinced that she is innocent as does Felicity's friend, Marcus. Felicity and Marcus and a few other people gather every now and then to practice their magical capabilities. They are known as the N.I.G.H.T.S. and they deal with the supernatural when it occurs around them. Maggie is asked to join them on the account of she recently and slowly starts to develop strange powers...
Anyway it's a good read with a bit of magic and mystery to keep you hooked. I read it in a little under two days. I am anxious to see how Maggie's adventures continue in the second book.
Fun "Witchy" Series.......2007-06-13
Once I picked up "The Trouble With Magic" I could not put it down. I enjoyed the plot and the characters. I guess that I see a lot of myself in Maggie - someone who struggles, not necessarily against, but with the beliefs of her upbringing and those that she wishes to hold as an adult. I thought that for a first in a series, the character development was good, the mystery intriguing and the romance subplot good. Personally, I enjoy a good "cozy" type mystery with a little romance thrown in. I am currently reading the next in the series and look forward to finishing it and hope that the series is here for a while.

The Trouble With Tink.......2007-02-23
I read TheTrouble With Tink. The Trouble With Tink is a book I love.I love this book because it makes me curious about whether Tink will lose her talent or not.I wonder this because I read'', So it's true,Tink thought. Everone is saying I've lost my talent''.This helps convince me that it was a good book!000
Alright, but seems to teach an odd lesson..........2006-09-19
I bought this as an audiobook for my daughter, and she enjoyed it. I thought it was alright. I just found it increasingly frustrating, as Tink refused to tell anyone what her problem was (it was only an accident!) or to ask for help. What's the moral here - if you have an innocent accident, better to lie, and refuse to ask for help, and get deeper into trouble, than risk embarassment? Is she that afraid of her "friends"? Yeah, I know, reading too much into a kids' book, but it just seemed a bit odd. :)
A great book!.......2006-05-24
I have read all the Disney Fairy books to my 5.5 year old daughter, and she loves them! I also think they are fun books. It's nice that each Disney Fairy book focuses on the story of one specific Fairy, telling the story from that Fairy's viewpoint.
We also love the pictures, and my daughter, who doesn't read a lot yet, always looks ahead to see what she can find in the pictures.
Definitely a fun book for anyone who loves fairies!
Trouble With Tlnk.......2006-05-23
I picked this book beacause it had discrption like no other. It showed detall in the pictures and uesed graet words,( I could really understand it). My favorite part was when Tink went to Peaters house to find the hamer that she left ther one night and Peater scared Tink (and the friend that was with her). My least favorite part was when Tink fownd out that she was mabey going to lose her job if they don't get the hamer.
So now I am going to leave the rest for you to read and fined out.
A Great Book.......2006-05-11
Opinion: this book is great! I loved the idea of "fairy tag" that the author came up with. I think that anyone who likes Peter Pan will love this book. However, I don't think that it is better than Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg.
Summery: When Terrance invites Tinker Bell to play fairy tag, Tink is delighted! Fairy tag is much more complicated than Clumsy tag, but when Timk loses her tinkers hammer, her life is practicly ruined! Tink is the best pots-and-pans talent in all of Pixie Hollow. She can't possibly fix anything without her tinkers hammer! The worst part is that she has a spare hammer, but when she went to visit and live with Peter Pan and the lost boys, she left it there. Tink hasn't talked to Peter since he brought Wendy to Neverland. He broke Tink's heart that day. Now, she is faced with the biggest decision in her life, talk to Peter, or lose her talent!
Book Description
The magical Malcolm women and logical Ives men return-in Patricia Rice's most magical novel to date...
Felicity Malcolm Childe's gift for experiencing visions through touch has always felt more like a curse than a blessing. Only the maddeningly handsome Ewen Ives provokes tingles of pleasure rather than pain, but he is already betrothed. Her last hope is to let him escort her to Scotland and help her find the ancient book of spells that could allow her to extinguish her gift-and free her from its burden.
Customer Reviews:
Ewen & Felicity are a terrific couple.......2005-03-13
Could any two people be better matched? While the previous two books emphasized how different the hero and geroine were, this one concentrates on how perfect they are for each other. True, the H & H aren't always convinced of that, especially Ewen, but the reader is. They definitely bring out the best in each other; at one point, Ewen realizes that they are each better people with the other. That's what relationships should be. Ewen helps Felicity control and appreciate her magic, while Felicity herls him take more responsibility -- or perhaps appropriate responsibility -- for his life. Sweeter than the previous two, perhaps because Felicity is young still, but a lovely, lovely romance.
On top of all that, we learn more about the mysterious Aidan, and there are two (not one, but two!) mysteries to solve. And of course, the families show up, creating their usual, delightful havoc. So stop reading this and go read the book!
Enchanting.......2004-11-16
Patricia Rice weaves a vivid tapestry of description and prose into a delightful tale of romance and intrigue.
The Trouble with Magic was hard to put down. I kept reaching for it again and again, wanting to finish the book but not wanting the enchanting tale to end.
Good work, Ms. Rice.
Magical, Sexy and Totally Entertaining!.......2004-06-09
Sit back in an easy chair and be prepared to be entertained as Ms. Rice takes you back into the creative and enchanting world of the Malcolm / Ives family with this latest entry featuring Lady Felicity Malcolm Childe and the youngest of the Ives brothers - Ewen. Most of the Malcolm women are born with special gifts and Felicity is no exception other than the fact that she hates her gift and finds it very difficult to control. She lives a very protected life as her extraordinary tactile powers have been known to shock her into a faint when the thing or person she touches has seen or known violence/hatred/rage, etc.. When she fell in a dead faint from a vision induced from the touch of the suitor her family had hoped she would marry she decided to find the means to rid herself of her gift. To do this, she needed to locate a special journal written by a Malcolm ancestor that would give her the `recipe' to accomplish it. Felicity and her aura-sensing sister, Christina made their escape from the confining security of their father's yacht and ran off to the city of Edinburgh. Along the way they ran into their brother-in-law, the youngest and handsomest of the Ives brothers - inventor Ewen Ives - who felt compelled into escorting the two innocents on their journey.
Mistakenly, Ewen touched Felicity and she realized that his touch didn't hurt her, rather it seemed to bring her to a more calmer and secure place. Ewen, initially attracted to Felicity by her intelligence and strength, discovered that once she shed the heavy coverings she normally wore, was an ethereal beauty as well. Even though he was becoming more and more attracted to Felicity, Ewen intended to marry a widowed heiress, regretting the fact that Felicity was an innocent and that he had nothing to offer her other than huge debts that were the result of one of his inventions that caused a flood. Felicity knew that Ewen was being cheated, framed for a crime he wasn't responsible for and knew she had to use her gift, no matter the ramifications, in order to help save the man who had given her the insights to accept her gift and whom she had fallen in love with.
Once again, Ms. Rice has created another totally delightful tale developing these very unique and wonderful characters from the inside out presenting the reader with a perfectly complementary couple in a purely soul satisfying story. Ewen's strength and understanding helped Felicity to understand the truly great `gift' she possessed. Showing her to enjoy her tactile gift Ewen ended up the recipient of a man's dream come true as Felicity welcomed and embraced her sensual awareness. This is a series that has each book standing on it's own with a wonderful cast of secondary characters that the reader will embrace in their hearts. And yes, I am still waiting patiently for the secret behind the mysterious Ives cousin(?) Aidan Dougal! Magical, sexy, and totally entertaining - Yes, yes, YES! --- Do I recommend it - Most Assuredly! --- Marilyn Rondeau, (...)

Th Trouble With Magic.......2004-01-30
I read the first two in this series and the author is obviously growing. Her descriptions of, the main character, Felicity's visions are rich and vivid and totally incredible. Felicity discovers how being different can be truly delicious when you have the right person to share your "oddities" with.
Book Description
The Trouble with Tink by Kiki Thorpe, read by Cassandra Morris
Tinker Bell is the best pots-and-pans-talent fairy in all of Pixie Hollow. But then she loses her tinker’s hammer and her world is turned upside down. The good news is that Tink has a spare hammer. The bad news is that she left it at Peter Pan’s hideout and they’re no longer speaking! Will Tink be able to make up with her old friend–or will she have to give up her talent forever?
Beck and the Great Berry Battle by Laura Driscoll, read by Alison Larkin
There’s nothing Beck likes more than speaking Bird or Chipmunk or Fox or Mole with the animals. Then one day her funny little hummingbird friend, Twitter, tells her that war has broken out between the hummingbirds and the chipmunks. Soon the blackberries start flying and fairies are getting caught in the crossfire. It’s up to Beck to get to the bottom of things. Only she can bring peace back to Pixie Hollow!

A Mixed Review.......2006-10-22
These are actually books 2 and 3 of a series. The first book is called "Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg" and includes all the Disney fairies teamed up in a "Final Fantasy" video-game like quest.
"The Trouble With Tink" is a well written story and is a good sequel to "Fairy Dust". I recommend it highly.
"Beck and the Great Berry Battle", on the other hand, is disappointing because Beck is not really given a chance by the author to do anything but watch events taking place. I do not recommend it.
Probably way more enjoyable for the kids. ;).......2006-09-19
We bought this for a trip, and the first one was well read. The second one, however, was starting to get on my nerves (I think the reader pulled out every accent she could think of), but my patience may not have been at its highest, either. ;) They've created an interesting world. The stories were ok, though in the first, the moral seems to be - have a problem, better not tell anyone, and better not ask for help! Seemed a bit odd.
Customer Reviews:
A fantastical, magical, wonderful modern children's classic.......1998-10-29
Growing up, Chew was my favorite writer and this is one of her premier books. It's about Harrison Peabody, a good-natured wizard who has a few "kinks" to iron out in his magic. As with all of her works, this book allows kids to set free their imaginations and really have fun reading--I did when I first read it over 15 years (gulp!) ago!
Apparently, Chew's books are still popular with kids as I saw her listed on several school reading lists and also found some online book reviews from kids. It'd be great if they'd start printing her books again--now I'm desperate to locate copies of anything she's written!
excellent.......1998-08-25
iread this book when i was six and i kept the copy and re-read it over and over again. but now i'm 28 and need a new one

Book Description
Volume 1 of the FAIRIE RING SERIES ****
THE TROUBLE WITH AN ELF: The Dark Lords, a mysterious council of evil beings, are trying to take control of the world of Fairie and the world of humans. Both worlds need each other to survive, but they cannot understand each other. Beautiful, teenage Fairie Princess Elazandra takes on the awesome responsibility of protecting both worlds, and slips into the human realm disguised as an exchange student living in the Jenkins' home. The disguise is easily done: blue contact lenses to cover her golden eyes, and long, pale blond hair to cover her pointed, elfin ears. (Elazandra's appearance was basically human, because her birth father was human.) Soon, she is forced to share her secret with Ryan, excellent junior high school student who excels in fencing. And as the two become caught up in the battle of sword and sorcery, their hearts are forever bound in first and undying love. Supporting characters introduced in the first book are Ashlyn, Ryan's older, not too bright sister, Elazandra's roommate in the Jenkin's home; Michael, Ryan's best friend, companion nerd, and computer genius; and Fax, a small, overweight dragon who both helps and hinders the main characters. In addition to treasure, he also hordes Rolex watches. And there are the orcs, evil creations of the Dark Lords who form the basic foot soldiers of the villains' armies, who are secretly gathering in a deserted toxic waste site. Book #1 story location is the human world.
