The perfect family...and the perfect nightmare.
TWISTED ROOTS
From the outside, Hannah Eaton seems to live a charmed life in wealthy Palm Beach, Florida, with her mother, Willow, a renowned psychologist, and her stepfather. But deep inside, she is miserable and lonely. She's been abandoned by her father, a pretentious lawyer whose family wants nothing to do with her. Now, the arrival of a new baby brother has consumed her mother, who is obsessed with caring for the sickly infant. And so, Hannah slips further into the shadows....
With the help of her boyfriend and her uncle, Hannah sets out for New Orleans to follow her dreams of singing. But life on the road holds many dark surprises -- and shattering realities that Hannah herself may not be ready to face....

Twisted Roots.......2005-09-12
My sister warned me about this book. Told me it was stupid. But I read it anyways. And I have to say she was right. It was very boring and took me longer then expected to get through it.
Willow was an idiot for some of the things she said or did to Hannah concerning baby Claude. But Hannah was also a big crybaby. Having a younger brother and sister in the home is a big adjustment no matter what your age. It's only happend to billions of other people in this world. So what. Why does Hannah have to be any different? Deal with it. You aren't the only one.
I will continue to read these books. No matter how bad of reviews they get. This book was one of the of worst.
I Enjoyed This Book! .......2004-10-08
Hanna Eaton looks like she has it made living with her wealthy parents, (mother and stepfather), and a crowd of great friends. But what no one from the outside realizes is that Hanna feels very left out and unloved. Her mother is expecting her second child so many years later, and it seems that she has no time at all to even think about Hanna. Especially when the baby Claude is born, and is a sickly child. Her mother is totally devoted to the baby, and Hanna might as well not exist.
But there is a new boyfriend in Hanna's life, Heyden. And when he gets involved in the picture, they discover that they have quite a talent for music singing together and playing guitar. So they form a plan with the help of Hanna's disabled uncle, to get to New Orleans where the jobs are. So they rent a mobile home, and off they go to New Orleans as soon as Hanna sneaks away from home. But what they discover once on the road, is not what they had thought at all. In fact, life takes on a whole different meaning for all of them.
Good.......2004-08-22
I see that this book is getting mixed reviews, and the thing is I agree with all of them. While Hannah is kind of spoiled and selfish like those on her father's side of the family, she has a good heart that's in the right place. She's not all sweetness and perfection like Christie, Annie and Pearl. She's pampered, but not blind to the misfortunes of others. I give it four stars for being a book that can stand on it's own outside of a series and not the same old "daughter" story.
And I agree with everyone that the Hudson series is a waste of paper, by the way!
Interesting Mystery.......2004-02-26
twisted roots, the novel that has caught many readers eyes, became a best selling book for its interesting plot. Its mystery and its details make readers want more. Twisted Roots is a story about a girl named Hanna, her life was a charm living in wealthy palm beach, Florida. this changed after the arrival of her new baby brother, who comsumed Willow (Hannah's mother). Now Willow didnt have much time left for Hannah, thats when Hannah decided to take a path on her own along with her boyfriend and her uncle.
The best of the series so far!.......2003-12-07
After reading "Wicked Forest...I didn't know what to expect from this book. I was truly surprised that I liked it more than the first two. Sure, Hannah was a whiner...but at least she did something adventurous!!!!! I didn't care for the ending much...but it was a great book!

William Monk, the unquestionably handsome, somewhat vain, but genuinely tenderhearted "agent of enquiry" is back on the streets of Victorian London, investigating his 10th case, a missing woman. Miriam Gardiner was due to be betrothed to a much younger man, a well-to-do gentleman named Lucius Stourbridge. But during a family croquet party, the bride-to-be vanished, apparently fleeing in a coach driven by a family servant named Treadwell. Monk would normally be reluctant to get involved in a simple case of pre-wedding jitters, but his own recent marriage to the headstrong nurse Hester Latterly gives him a newfound empathy for the heartbroken Lucius. Of course, as always in Perry's historical mysteries, all is not quite as it seems. Treadwell is found murdered, and the missing Miriam becomes the number-one suspect. Monk is convinced that she "could and would do no intentional evil," even as Hester connects her to another illicit crime. Eventually unearthed by London's finest, Miriam is arrested and charged with murder, and it's up to barrister Oliver Rathbone to absolve her in court (with a little help from his good friends William and Hester Monk).
With a plot twist around every corner, Anne Perry knows just how to keep us in suspense, right up to the exceedingly dramatic finale. The Twisted Root is a luminous whodunit from the queen of Victorian mystery. --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
A young groom enlists private investigator William Monk to track down his fiancée, Miriam Gardiner, who disappeared suddenly from a party at a luxurious Bayswater mansion. But Monk soon finds the coach in which Miriam fled and, nearby, the murdered body of the coachman. There is no trace of Miriam. What strange compulsion could have driven the beautiful widow to abandon the prospect of a loving marriage and financial abundance? Monk and clever nurse Hester Latterly, themselves now newlyweds, desperately pursue the elusive truth--and an unknown killer whose malign brilliance they have scarcely begun to fathom. . . .
Customer Reviews:
Plausible complexity with historical subtext.......2007-01-09
This review is for the Ballantine Books hardcover first edition, October 1999, 346 pages. THE TWISTED ROOT was on the USA Today top 150 best seller list for seven weeks in September and October 2000, reaching a peak position of forty. By the end of 2006, Ms. Perry had 23 novels on the USA Today list.
This is a splendid novel set in London in midsummer 1860. It begins with the abrupt departure and disappearance of Miriam Gardiner, a commoner, from a garden party celebrating her betrothal to Lucius Stourbridge, a younger man of considerable means. Lucius hires William Monk, an agent of inquiry, to find his fiancée. With the particulars of this mystery launched, the story switches to Monk's recent bride, Hester, who is a volunteer nurse at the North London Hospital, which has a mystery of its own - medicines are disappearing. These two plots will intertwine.
Within this historical setting, the author crystallizes progress in the past hundred and fifty years. I cringed at the subservient role of women in general back then, and the pitiful concept of the nursing profession in particular. Within this context, the author portrays determined efforts of strong minded women struggling without much wiggle room. However, to do this, there is excessive narration of the character's internal thoughts, the nuances of them, sometimes convoluted. If these were related through dialogue and body language, the read would be livelier.
Masterful plotting drives this story. Around page 204, the culprit narrows to one of two characters; an experienced mystery reader would know which one. But why? Later, the author, instead of adding some implausible twist, explicitly eliminates cute surprises and gives the reader subtle clues, which keeps you turning pages, trying to figure the TWISTED relationships of secrets within secrets. This is edge of your seat plausible complexity with historical subtext.
My first and perhaps last Anne Perry read.......2006-07-24
This was the first time I've read Perry's novels, and at first, the story and characters delighted me. But soon, plot twists and characters started to fog up the story. There were too many side characters who didn't propel the story, too many POV switches ("head hopping"), and too many asides about the Crimean war. The story meandered along, moving slowly through the clues and testimonials of each character, and then screeched quickly to a halt with a barrage of new evidence and a story line that seemed contrived and strange. The main characters seem to be Hester and Monk, but then at the end, the story ends with no discussion by them, no reflection on the turn of events. I was left wondering what the point of the story was. While Perry has a fine grasp on Victorian times, I learned more about what not to do as a writer than anything else. Perhaps there are better William Monk novels out there...if this was the best, I'd steer clear of the whole series.
a surprise ending with a unbelievable twist.......2006-07-13
This is the first book of Anne Perry's that ive read and i am sure it wont be the last. This book is fantastic. This book grabs your attention and wont let u put it down untill the very last page. The ending is such a twist and shocker that u would never guess the killer. I recommend The Twisted Root to anyone who is looking to read a "not-put-downable" mystery that will grab u until the last page. A must read and great book. Anne Perry is great!
Another excellent examination of Victorian morality.......2006-01-31
The newly married Mr. Mrs. Monk become embroiled in a nicely complex mystery, steeped in Victorian morality. a missing bride-to-be, a nurse taking her belief in healing outside of the confines of her hospital's notions of what constitutes proper medical care, and the struggle of Perry's newlyweds adjusting to their new lives together combine to create an intriguing and thought provoking adventure. Perry's ability to capture the time period is exceptional; she not only creates a proper setting but her presentation of Victorian morality, particularly in the medical establishment's attitude toward the nursing profession, is exceptional. It serves as an interesting history lesson as well as and good mystery.
While the mystery itself is sufficiently complex to interest a reader, the ending is a bit rushed after the long set-up. But all in all, this was a good read and a nice addition to Perry's series.
Incredible imagination.......2003-05-10
Excellent story, at first when Monk found Miriam and she told him that she is innocent, but she can't tell anything because nobody will believe her and because is better if she die that telling the true, I thought that the book doesn`t worth it, but I kept reading because the book keeps you interested in the story, so I said: "OK, I am sure that at the end I will regret to finish the book but I will."
When you get to the end of the book, you will see that Miriam was right, she will be better dead that telling everybody the truth of what she saw in Lucius house, I don`t know if this story could happen to a woman, but I wish not.

Toys doing very wrong things.......2003-12-27
If you're a super-geekin' comic-book/collectible-toy/Cult-TV-&-Movie/Pop-Culture fanboy who's up on you're knowledge of comic books/toys/Cult TV shows & movies/ pop culture (you'll need it to understand many of the references thrown about)-- and you're into sick and juvenile humor-- and you're not easily offended-- more `n' likely you'll find what'cher lookin' for (and then some) in this collection of the best Twisted ToyFare Theatre episodes culled from the pages of ToyFare magazine. Each six-page-long comic-book-style misadventure-- fifteen in all-- is usually set in the `burbs of MegoVille, U.S.A., and stars a Spider-Man action figure who's completely dropped all that "power & responsibility" B.S. to become the jaded, indifferent, and sarcastic smart@$$ he was destined to be. The show's main co-star is the Hulk, a Lenny-like (with Spidey usually assuming the "George" role in their numerous team-ups here) `tard who spends his time either petting the local wildlife (usually a fatal thing for the pettee), or trying to find a restroom before he literally explodes in a shower of-- well, you'll just hafta see for yourself. Guest/supporting characters include the mighty (and slightly fem) Thor; Ponch and John & Sgt. Cotrere from "ChiPs" as the town lawmen, and a perpetually tanked-up Iron Man.
Then there's the amazing adventures these toys-gone-wrong go on-- like Spidey, Hulk, and Thor attending the annual comic book convention and being forced to stay the night after a fruitless effort to find the cavernous convention hall's exit. Then there's the one where Spidey makes a sudden and unexpected trip to Eternia and helps Skeletor make the connection between Prince Adam and He-Man. Other lowbrow hijinks include Dr. Doom holding a yard sale, Spidey and his buddies escaping a horde of P.O'd Smurfs, Cobra Commander and his minions invading Spidey's house (love the part where the fridge magnets get stuck to Destro's helmet-mask thingy), Dr. Doom suffering the indignity of temping for the Fantastic Four, and other ludicrous and occasionally scatological shenanigans. Speakin' of which: if you're concerned about the yuks bein' a bit TOO risque, most of the stuff that goes on in TTT almost never goes beyond the PG-13 realm of tastelessness. Well, except for the part where that dealer at the comic book convention pulls a Mr. Creosote on Spidey and Thor. Or the part where a robot gets a bit too, er, intimate with Dr. Doom. Otherwise, there's plenty of good, clean fun to be had-- like the hilarious, yet tragic consequences of Iron Man's binge-drinking. Or the ambiguously, er, "fluffy" relationship between Captain America and his teenage sidekick Bucky. Or the part where-- well, you should probably see that particular scene for yourself...
Anyhoo-- seein' as it's gettin' late, and I'm runnin' outta things to say about this baby, I think I'll wind things up with a description of its "special features", which includes an introduction penned by director Kevin Smith that I've never read, `cuz I really don't care what he has to say. Also included is a "behind-the-scenes" look at how an eppie of TTT is produced. Discussed in brief are a few scenes and concepts the TTT writers came up with, but eventually decided were a bit TOO risque to use (the wusses!). Topping it all off is a list and description of the 10 most outrageous moments in other TTT stories that weren't included in this collection... which I found to be a waste of space. The way I see it, if they're not gonna include the eppies in their entirety, don't show `em at all...

Book Description
Twisted Roots of Evil details the authors journey from her abusive upbringing in the rural south to survival at the turn of the millennium. As a child, Susan Kesegich and her sisters suffered extreme neglect, sexual, mental and physical abuse. Their father raped them and they watched him tie their mother to a tree, light a fire beneath her, and shoot at her. Marrying at the tender age of fourteen to escape the horror, Susan found herself in a marriage that rivaled her mothers for physical abuse. Six years later, she, too, was divorced, poor, uneducated, and lost. Although her life changed when she met her current husband, it was through the victimization of her father's second family that she ultimately found closure. With the help of Susan, her father was sentenced to life in prison for the abuse he committed against his second family.
This is a story that is heart wrenching but at the same time uplifting. This is a story that needed to be told. It details Susan's remarkable journey that captures the essence of survival in a dynamic, contemporary world. It tells everyone you can start out in this world with everything stacked against you but with pride, determination, and perseverance you can make a difference.
Customer Reviews:
Roots of Evil.......2005-10-10
Montell Williams interviewed the victims and I had to get the book. This book is well written and describes the horrors that these children went through and into their adult lives. The questions that were unanswered as children, the justice system, some answers, and the shock that another individual had to endure worse by the same hands of the perp. The author shows our human ability to grow past our upbringing to become "normal," successful individuals, yet also relates that remnants shall remain throughout our lives. This book leaves the reader pondering additional questions that cannot be answered.
twisted roots of evil.......2005-09-30
It was the most heart wrenching book I have read in a very long time. I work with abused children in one form or another and it just tears my heart out ...I am thrilled that the family has tried to find peace and is trying to move on.
A Must Read Book..........2005-07-28
After I picked this book up and started reading it I couldnt put it down. The author is so vivid in her writing that it keeps you pinned to your seat. While reading the book its as though you can feel the fear that these children lived with on a day to day basis. This book sums up just how cruel some child abuse cases can really be.
A truly amazing book!.......2001-03-01
If you are in an abusive relationship. . . this book will open your eyes! You can survive. The hurt can heal. . . and "you" must learn from the experience of others and break free.
Twisted Roots of Evil.......2000-08-06
This book was an eye opening experience for me. Many of us tend to run from our past and refusing to deal with it. When i read the book it made me realize that i am not the only one as a child that has suffered at the hands of a trusted adult and will continue to tell others i know about TWISTED ROOTS OF EVIL, A real page turner, when i read it i had to keep a box tissue near me. Until more people open there eyes and realize this is happening and speak up and stop the abuse then it will continue.

Be aware!.......2006-10-25
A great read with terrific pictures of many past greats, BUT, the same book has been re-issued under three diferent titles!
Fun but Flawed and Faulty.......2006-09-19
Tosches is an entertaining and skillful writer and the premise of this book is an important and timely one. Country music has been diluted, softened and stripped of what once made it great and is now in the hands of the pallid "new country" gang of cheeseballs. Tosches saw this coming way back in the mid-70s, resented it and wrote this book. Unfortunately Country is full of misconceptions, omissions and serious factual errors. Yes, country music did have a dark side but it's always had a family and religious side as well and even in its earliest stages could cross over into sentimental and mawkish pap. This didn't start in the 50's as Tosches insists but was present in the music of the Carter Family and Jimmy Rogers (Tosches barely mentions either) who between them invented the genre. Their music embraced both sides of the coin as did every great country artist who ever lived including Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. (Tosches unfairly savages Cash in this book for his lightweight songs which is odd because in an article written 15 years later, Tosches praises him to the skies although Cash had written no groundbreaking tunes in the intervening years)
Tosches makes much of how the British murder ballad tradition disappeared completely from early country music, ignoring (or perhaps being unaware of) songs like Banks of the Ohio or Knoxville Girl--both of which were major country hits in the 30s and 50s respectively and are both taken directly from the murder ballad tradition as are many, many other country songs.
His chapter on the development of the dobro and steel guitar is potentially interesting but is full of major errors. Tosches seems unaware of the major differences between dobro, slide guitar, steel guitar, pedal steel guitar and so on and at times it sounds like he thinks they're all the same instrument with only minor alterations. For example, he doesn't mention the difference in the number of strings between dobro and pedal steel nor the very different tunings used. This would be acceptable if the discussion were brief but considering the space he devotes to the topic, these omissions are glaring. It would be a bit like saying that the piano is just a big harpsichord.
At one point he strongly disagrees with musicologists who claim that many country guitarists were influenced by jazz guitarists. He claims that the guitarist from Milton Brown's band couldn't have been influenced by Django Reinhardt because--he says--Reinhardt's records didn't reach the states until the late 30's. Wrong, Nick. Try 1933. Eddie Lang, who had a huge influence on country guitarists is never mentioned nor is Charlie Christian whose work was the source of the style of every gutiarist who played with Bob Wills.
But the most unforgiveable mistake is his insistence that Maybelle Carter's guitar playing had as much influence on country music as "Rudy Vallee." Read the history of the Carter Family, "Bury Me Beneath the Willow" and the many testimonials from the greatest country guitarists ever recorded who all say that their primary influence was Mother Maybelle. This is so evident simply by listening to classic country music rhythm guitar playing that one wonders if Tosches has actually heard any.
Also, Tosches can't resist proving to us once again that he is a scholar of Greek and Roman literature and history and his references to this subject are sometimes laughably incongruous, clearly designed to convince us that his scholary credentials are unimpeachable. Usually these tedious asides have nothing to do with the subject at hand.
Still, Tosches is a good writer, full of irreverence and wit and great turns of phrase. This is a fun book to read and Tosches makes a few good points. But if you want to read truly well researched books on country music, forget this and pick up Bill Malone's Country Music USA and Rich Kienzle's excellent book Southwest Shuffle, a fantastically researched book which says more about the real roots of "New Country" in one chapter than Tosches says in this entire poorly realized mess of a book.
Makes punk and gangsta look tame.......2006-05-15
Anyone who thinks country music is boring needs to read this book. A great warts and all treatment of the dark underbelly of C & W. Fascinating trivia and insights for anyone familiar with the great country music of the 1930s to 1950s. The twisted roots of Country makes punk and gangsta look tame.
The Master of purple prose and truth stikes again!.......2005-12-23
OK, I'm a big Tosches fan BUT here Nick gets religion and digs deep into the seamy underbelly of country music. Roy Acuff singing dirty songs? The devil in Jerry Lee Lewis? The sacred and profane all wonderfully exposed and written by Nick (the devil himself) Tosches. Great stuff.
The most informative ever written on early Country Music.......2005-10-17
I have bought 6 copies of this books since 1988, for friends and for the two copies I wore out. Before reading this I was already a fan of early Country Music, but this book opened my eyes and ears to a multitude of artists that I wasn't aware of but who had helped shape the direction of Country Music. The only negative thing I can say about this book is that after reading it, I ended up spending a small fortune purchasing LPs, and later CDs, of the obscure artists he makes reference to.

Weakest in Series by Far.......2004-09-20
Not completely terrible, some laughs are in there but overall it is MUCH less funny than any of the previous books in the series (of which I own and love all). Some really lame and cliche jokes appear in this one. It lacks the cleverness of the the writing in the others and has crazy things happen for the sake of crazy things happening without being very funny about them.
Skip this one, wait to see if they get back in their groove.

If you're a super-geekin' comic-book/collectible-toy/Cult-TV-&-Movie/Pop-Culture fanboy who's up on your knowledge of comic books/toys/Cult TV shows & movies/ pop culture (you'll need it to understand many of the references thrown about)-- and you're into sick and juvenile humor-- and you're not easily offended-- more 'n' likely you'll find what'cher lookin' for (and then some) in this latest collection of Twisted ToyFare Theatre episodes culled from the pages of ToyFare magazine. Yep, there ain't nothin' like playthings saying and doing very wrong things to help me get my laugh on and momentarily forget what a sad, empty, and conjugal-companion-free existence I lead...
Within the pages of this particular volume you'll find out how Doctor Octopus becomes a member of the Mile-High Club, as well as the gerbil-juggling, er, talents of the, er, lefty-batting Northstar on 'Ultimate Idol'. BTW Northstar also gets his very own one-page ad in this tome for 'Maltoids: Bi-Curiously Strong Mints'. Then there's the part where the Fantastic Four's Invisible Woman aims to break Jenna Jameson's record-- um, whatever THAT means, heh. Then there's the 'Jews Gone Wild' video ("I'm eatin' lobster!") that pops up in one panel. But these oh-so-wrong vignettes are nothin' compared to the scene on page 11 where the Sandman is getting some, er, much-appreciated attention at the beach from Cap's Kenny-like sidekick Bucky. This moment is the book's lowest (and funniest) point, and is sure to get your parents to kick you out of the basement should they ever come 'round to reading it. To paraphrase Spidey on page 77, it's like "seeing something you can't unsee".
Also thrown in for fun are profiles of TTT's various characters, including the incessantly sloshed Iron Man and the highly jingoistic and extremely, er, closeted Captain America. Rounding things off is TTT's Hall of Shame, featuring the show's most tasteless gags and biggest production blunders. Oh yes, and Stan Lee wrote the intro to this volume, which I read about halfway through before I realized that I didn't give two doots about what he thinks of TTT. "Excelsior" THIS, Stan...

"TTT" takes a slight downturn.......2005-06-20

Only thing is, you might wanna go with the first four issues in this series instead of this one. For some reason I didn't find the hijinks within this particular offering quite as laugh-out-loud funny as in previous volumes. There are a few high points, such as the quartet of infamous 1980s `toon villains Gargamel, Megatron, Skeletor, and Cobra Commander playing a game of Risk ("I don't smurf that way"?! Too much...), starting on page 54. And Doctor Strange's ill-advised detoxing of a crowd of KISS fans was pretty amusing ("Ticket Masters of Evil", starting on p. 40). Other than these, however, I only got a good smile at best at the overall proceedings. Especially disappointing was Mego Spidey's cuttin' down of "Star Wars Episode II", ("A Clone in the Dark", page 28), which wasn't nearly as hard on my funny bone as his cut-down of "Episode I" (which appears in "Best of TTT Volume 2"). Even the ad parodies lacked the punch of their predecessors.
One feature that REALLY didn't help was the pair of "Slideshows" near the end of the book. The "Slideshow" is a relatively new feature in ToyFare where they take stills from a notable cartoon show or anime feature (in this instance, "G.I. Joe" and "Akira"), and make a funny comic-strip-style adventure out of the stills. Only problem is, I've never found any of ToyFare's "Slideshows" the least bit amusing, and the pair featured in this tome is no exception. They really oughta give it up, and bring back "Side Show", which involved non-Mego figures saying very wrong things. At least those were funny some times...
Bottom line: you do well to borrow this from a fellow geekin' fanboy buddy and give it a read before you consider plunkin' down the twelve-ninety-nine cover price plus sales tax for it. It's decent one-off reading, but not something I'd consider a "keeper" for my book shelf...
