Fans of James Patterson's resourceful cop Alex Cross will be relieved to find that he's back on familiar territory with Violets Are Blue--and, more importantly, that this is one of the best Alex Cross thrillers yet.

The malign criminal genius of Roses Are Red is fixing to give Alex a hard time once again. The FBI joins Patterson's dogged cop in a particularly unsettling investigation: two San Francisco joggers have been viciously murdered and are found suspended by their feet, with all the blood drained from their corpses. And when further brutal deaths follow in California and on the East Coast, Alex is forced to contemplate the bizarre possibility of modern-day vampires, although his instincts point him to one of the many sinister religious cults that flourish on the West Coast. Aided by Jamilla Hughes, a streetwise young woman detective from San Francisco, Alex finds that he has to crack not one but two impenetrable mysteries to stop further bloodletting.

Patterson fans expect the extremely concise, page-turning chapters (116 of them here!), along with a reluctance to dawdle over details of his hero's personal life, and both characteristics are firmly back in place. If you can resist reading this one in just a few sittings, you deserve some kind of a thriller reader's medal. --Barry Forshaw, Amazon.co.uk

Alex Cross has never believed in vampires. But when two joggers are found slain in a manner that suggests a macabre ritual, he has to reconsider. Someone believes in vampires enough to have committed a series of bizarre murders that appear to be the work of one. Local police are horrified, and even the FBI is baffled.

Cross takes on the case and plunges into a netherworld of secret clubs and role-players, a world full of poseurs and playactors--and someone demented enough to have crossed the line from dark ritual to real blood. At the same time, a lethal supercriminal from Cross's past known as the Mastermind is stalking him, taunting him, and threatening everything he holds dear. Cross has never been closer to defeat, or in greater danger. In a shocking conclusion, Alex Cross must survive a deadly confrontation--only to discover at last the awful secret of the Mastermind.

2 out of 5 stars Vampires? Oh, no...........2007-07-27

While this may not be James Patterson's worst novel, it is not his best either. I just can't accept the premise that there are vampire cults or cells across the country and that these weirdos actually kill people to drink their blood. I could accept it in Bram Stoker and Anne Rice, who wrote romances, what ifs, in artistic fashion. I was able to suspend my disbelief mechanism for them, but not for this book.

Another serious problem is the re-introduction of the downright silly villain, "The Mastermind" from "Roses Are Red." It felt as if Patterson couldn't deal with the blood suckers any longer and still had pages to fill, so he tossed in a second plot that wasn't really connected.

In the rush to get books out, perhaps the writer is not thinking these plots through. Or maybe the editors just aren't paying much attention in their drive to get another best seller.

5 out of 5 stars A real page turner.......2007-07-21

Alex is at his best and worse in this fast moving tale of modern vampires who are making their way across country virtually slaughtering their "prey" and hanging them by their feet, then draining and drinking their blood. Alex finally uncovers the mystery of the Mastermind and is against all odds, falling in love again. Pick this book up to read and you won't put it down until the very last page.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful mystery.......2007-07-03

Great read. You should read the books in order of when they were written. They are always fun and fast moving reads with Alex Cross the supper cop or what ever he is or detective psychoanalyst. If you like a good mystery don't miss the Alex Cross books

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT read this book, out of order.......2007-06-04

Do NOT read this book if you haven't read his earlier books. Not only are there lots of confusing references to his earlier books, but also lots of spoilers. Much of this book did not make sense. Also the 'sidekick' Sampson is always wasted in these books. It's like he's just waiting around to help Cross or console him and doesn't have much to do. Big disappointment compared to Spenser and Hawk (I recommend Robert Parker novels BY FAR over these.)

2 out of 5 stars Average Book -- If You're a Patterson Fan, Read It, If Not Don't Start Here.......2007-04-16

I think there are two themes in the reviews to this book.

1. The book doesn't come up to those in the rest of the Alex Cross series. Its not a *bad* book, but its just a weak effort in the series.

2. The two stories in the book -- the vampires plus the mastermind, just really don't mesh. I understand what Patterson is trying to do here, in a theme within a theme, but even given that the connection between the two should be a little more evident.

I would add another piece that I thought the vampires piece wasn't a strong story in and of itself. It had the set-up to be a good story, but ultimately in my mind it just didn't all fully hang together for me logically. Without going too deeply into spoilers, I was left asking is it supernatural, or is it not?

Finally while I bashed this a little in this review, its not a bad book. Its a decent page turning thriller and if you grab the book in a used book store or otherwise need something to occupy your time on a long flight, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-07-27

This book was very informative and helpful. The author presented the subject matter from all different perspectives in a fun, sensitive, and nonjudgmental manner. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars Great bedtime book.......2007-05-14

This starts out slow but taught me things even my man didn't know He thinks I should have gotten this book sooner

1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-03-15

This is certainly not a "guide," as the title suggests. It talks a great deal about and around the issue, but offers little in terms of technique. I guess if you're not sure you even want to do it, this book might be helpful in making you more comfortable with the idea. But if you are actually looking for some specific advice that will give him "mind-blowing pleasure" as the book title infers, you won't find it here.

4 out of 5 stars Promises to be an interesting read..........2007-03-10

I'm about fifty pages in to this... I found it boring at first, but it seems to be getting more interesting. It is very informative and surprisingly long. My only disappointment is that the pictures are drawings (and not very good ones). Considering who it's written by, you would think that there would be some stock pictures that could be included... That would have been a lot better.
Incidentally, my husband is very excited by some of the new techniques that I have learned already.

3 out of 5 stars Great advice.......2007-01-18

I've given a few copies of this book to young, inexperienced girlfriends who are afraid to ask about sex, and reluctant to experiment. Each of them have thanked me in the end, and feel it is great advice. Since receiving the book must feel uncomfortable, I came up with a patented technique to break the ice. First session, I give her the big O and refuse to undress. Then I give her the book and tell her to dazzle me tomorrow. They all say it has improved their skills. Practice makes perfect girls, get a copy of this.

Book Description

All steamed up and nothing to read? Best Women’s Erotica 2007 opens a Pandora’s box of pleasures, with scorching encounters, dreamy partners, and heart-pounding thrills that won’t put a run in your fishnets (and a few that will). In Teresa Noelle Roberts’s “Voice of an Angel,” an opera costumer helplessly infatuated with a countertenor — a man who sings a female part in baroque opera —makes interesting discoveries as she measures his inseam. In Susie Hara’s “Puffy Lips,” a refined woman indulges her primitive urge to take what she wants from a modern-day caveman in a dark alley. Kathleen Bradean’s “Chill” describes the lengths to which the heroine will go to enact her unusual, icy fetish at an exclusive “spa.” “Kink was the candy coating that made sex tastier,” she explains. “Fetish was sweet dark chocolate, straight up.” Stylishly edited by sex guru Violet Blue, the Best Women’s Erotica series showcases the most daring, best-written erotica available. And, like a gorgeous lover, it complements any bedroom decor.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not very good .. or erotic.......2007-08-24

I was very disappointed with this, I thought the stories while reasonably well written weren't at all erotic. They have very little buildup or character development and focused on a wide variety of unusual or fetish topics rather than just good writing. The good stuff at Literotica.com is much better than this.

1 out of 5 stars Full of weird fetishes.......2007-08-23

I bought this book for some fun and 'stimulating' reading before bed and can't even finish the book it's so bad. I've read about 3 or 4 stories and they are all freaky weird fetishes that do nothing for me but gross me out and make me feel weird in a bad way. The stories are also very short so by the time I may have been getting interested the story was ending.

Interesting read if you are looking for weird sex fetishes but not so great for what I wanted.

5 out of 5 stars Women's Erotica.......2007-06-06

I bought this for my wife, she loves the book. Most of the stories are very steamy, this is to my benefit. Enjoy, she does and so do I...

4 out of 5 stars Stylish Erotica.......2007-04-07

I must admit I do like this kind of book. The short erotic stories from different angles (if you pardon the pun)are much easier to digest than long winded novels. Some of the stories are a relavation and all are enjoyable. I can heartily recomend it. Another book I can recommend is Suzie Van Aartman's 100 Percent Erotica, a very sexy and explicit collection of short stories.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely Not Literary.......2007-04-04

Okay if you just want sex, but for good writing look elsewhere.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Where was this book when I needed it??.......2007-07-25

Well better late than never. When I was growing up and going through my teenage years, the only advice I got on how to lick the harry hatchet wound was from comedian Sam Kinison. He said just to write the alphabet. Well I figured out the hard way that's not really true, and making the letters K, X, and F are pretty difficult and can give your tongue a cramp.

Now that I have read this book, I feel like a world class tuna taco eater. As I read this book, it felt as if I was a spy reading enemy battle plans. I learned about nerve endings in the clitoris, to electric signals from the vulva. After completing this book, all I can say is that the vagina has got to be the most confusing piece of flesh in the world, you really do need a book. The government should print pamphlets about it.

Well now that I am armed with the knowledge, I plan to apply my know-how. If there are any chicks out there who want to get in touch with me, send me a message.

Bon Apetit!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A different book, with a male perspective.......2007-03-31

Frankly, I've not read this book, but I am going to give it a try and will not knock it. However, for those who would like a male perspective on this art, see Ian Kerners, "She Comes First." Kerner is a sex therapist with an obvious passion for this subject. His book is written with wit, style, and, most importantly, SUBSTANCE! After the obligatory anatomy lesson, he spends a lot of time addressing men's attitudes toward this activity, and how to frame it in a way that is loving and generous ("Brevity is the soul of wit, but not of cunnilingus"). There is also a lot of "technical detail" with specific crib lists for various levels of expertise. I have been a cunnilinguist for over 30 years, and now I not only know why some of the techniques I've stumbled on work, but also picked up a few new tricks and certainly a better attitude. By the way, Kerner has written a companion book called "He Comes Second."

5 out of 5 stars LOOKIE! Pictures and everything! :D.......2007-01-31

"EXCELLENT!!!" - 'In Depth' coverage of material - Slight lesbian flavor. Very Tasty Read...

3 out of 5 stars Another beginners guide.......2007-01-13

I bought this book in the hopes of learning things that I didn't know. I was disappointed. I guess I have tried it all already. I would however recommend this book to someone who has little to no experience performing cunnilingus, the knowlege inside will save them weeks of trial and error and could be particularly helpful if they find themselves with a partner who doesn't know how to communicate her wants properly.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing new or informative here........2007-01-10

Nothing new, interesting, or informative found within these pages. Pretty much just common sense. I basically just wasted my money. At least it is fairly well written.

Extremely erotic. I was pleasantly surprised by how explicitly the scenes were written. Has been fodder for many a fantasy for my husband and me.

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2006-05-03

this is a very good book. my wife loved it. just like the title says taboo stuff in every story. to the people that gave it negitive reviews what did you expect from something that said taboo clearly on the front cover. pretty long book to. more stories than we expected.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2006-01-09

I bought this book because of all of the good reviews. I was NOT impressed. First of all, the writing is mediocre at best. The stories offer little in the way of meaningful character development and delve right into poorly worded sex scenes. The first three stories I read were about anal sex, watching your wife give another man oral sex and humiliating your husband by tying him up and ball-gagging him then penetrating him with a strap on. To be honest these stories turned me OFF and I'll be returning the book. Save your money this is not good.

Book Description

The sales of books about sexual fantasy aimed at heterosexual couples prove how determined readers are to hold onto that erotic spark. But most of these books underestimate the literary refinement of their readers. Good Vibrations sex educator Violet Blue corrects that trend, showcasing imaginative, sophisticated stories to arouse and renew readers’ sexual explorations. Sweet Life collects 25 erotic tales guaranteed to inspire newlyweds and long-term partners alike.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Sweet? Try Cloying..........2007-01-23

'Sweet Life: Erotic Fantasies for Couples' and I have essentially broken up by now. We've tried making it work for some months now, but the sexual chemistry just isn't there. It boils down to irreconcilable differences: I want something that is well-written and original; Sweet Life strives for as many cheap thrills as you can get with third-grade diction and vocabulary.

We gave it an earnest attempt at first: the wife and I got comfortable together and I read aloud the first five stories or so to her. Interest waned as it became apparent that certain phrases would be repeated throughout each tale. Phrases such as 'already erect', 'thrusting repeatedly', 'cries of pleasure' became commonplace, predictable. Every paragraph featured at least one superlative adjective.

Maybe if we'd built a drinking game around our reading-time ('Wet and slippery', take a drink!; 'So darn hard', take two drinks!), we could've made it work. But the inspiration wasn't there, so the inspiration wasn't there.

Besides droll repetition of stock erotica vocabulary, Sweet Life lacked the sophistication that I've come to desire in my fiction. I can't boast a collegiate background in literature, but I do appreciate it when my books can adroitly turn a phrase. I can count on Chuck Palahniuk's novels to titillate. Terry Pratchett does things with his sentences I didn't know were possible. And Stephen King, while getting on in years, still can work his prose into a frenzy, with a long-enough running start.

But Sweet Life's stories (with one exception, a doozy by Hanne Blank that has almost no sex in it) are, without fail, contrived, formulaic and cliché. Some examples:

'Although my internet-whiz husband spent his days in front of a computer screen, he kept in shape by by swimming laps at lunchtime at the health club next door to where he worked.'

'Negotiation has always been the hallmark of our relationship.'

'...it had literally been years...'

At 'literally', I nearly slammed the cover on Sweet Life, thinking, "There's just no excuse for this abuse of language in our relationship." But I kept my calm and just laughed it off, and let the distance grow naturally.

One day soon, I'll nonchalantly move the book to the cardboard box in the closet and the next thing it'll know, someone will be shelving it for purchase at the local thrift shop. And then I'll have completely moved on.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2007-01-07

I rate this book tops in its category and handy for all couples young and old for bedtime............

5 out of 5 stars hot.......2005-08-01

My wife and I were never erotica readers before, and we really like this book. The stories are a good way to heat things up.

3 out of 5 stars We are VERY open minded, BUT.............2005-06-06

This book just did not do it for us. We purchased this book (and Sweet Life: Erotic Fantasies for Couples 2) based on the reviews from other couples and women. We were sorely disappointed. But maybe our type of fantasies are different from others. Male-Male Bisexuality and enemas do not fit our view point of erotic fantasies.

However, based on the writing style, the stories are well written. We gave this 3 stars because the fantasies are just not our type, but the writing style is VERY well done.
Just not for us.

5 out of 5 stars The Marvelous Miss Blue .......2005-02-10

Violet Blue has gathered together an unparalleled collection of erotica with a unique purpose: to turn on couples. And it works! The stories in this beautiful book are sexy without being vulgar and they let couples know that it's okay to have dirty thoughts. It's okay to give in to erotic fantasies. These stories push the boundaries without ever being too far out. This collection is the type of book you could leave out in your living room without feeling embarrassed. The cover is striking and sexy, and the mood within the pieces are equally so. A very delicious selection from a mistress of the genre.

Book Description

Best-selling sex book author Violet Blue takes the helm of this renowned series with a sexy, wide-ranging collection.

Twist your bed sheets and dampen your palms. Under the stylish editorship of sex guru Violet Blue, Best Women’s Erotica 2006 delivers risky, romantic thrills. These joyful, daring, authentic stories revel in erotic adventure, from the sparks between strangers to the knowing caresses of longtime lovers. In Kellie Gillespie’s “Another Assignation with Charles Bonnet,” a blind woman experiences “love at first smell” on a London street corner — cinnamon, sweat, leather, and tobacco — and determines to find again the man who carries this scent. Sydney Beier’s “Reading to Horst” is a paean to possibility: an American woman living in Germany has a languorous encounter with a tourist who asks her to read aloud to him at a café from the copy of Anaïs Nin’s Little Birds in her hands. And Elizabeth Coldwell’s “Heat” describes the fierce affair between a barmaid and her brutish temporary boss, a man she doesn’t even like but who sets her heart pounding.

Best Women's Erotica 2006 is enjoyable - it has a nice variety of scenarios and nothing too freaky.

5 out of 5 stars A quality product.......2006-08-07

The writing is excellent. This is not a substandard book intended strictly to make a lot of money off people looking for cheap thrills while shopping at the grocery store. The variety of stories is also good.

Book Description

Most fetishists have healthy, happy sex lives with their lovers in the style of sex that their lovers prefer and must partition off their sexual fetishes from their relationships. This can be isolating, but no one needs to feel lonely in a relationship, or feel confused about getting their needs met. This guide is for understanding and making the most of your--or your lover's--fetish, and learning that normal sex is exactly the kind of sex you enjoy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars very informative .......2007-10-11

I found this book to be very informative, eye opening and practical. I keep this one on bedside table. A outstanding addition to a sex library.
Oh, and the short stories are awesome and inspiring.
Not to mention arousing. Purchase this book. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-10-04

This book will tell you just about everything on a number of fetishes and how to integrate any (that turn you on) into your relationship with your partner, respectfully and safely. Violet also explains how to understand your partner's fetish. Interspersed with chapters on fetishes are short erotic stories. Huge source list in the back. No pictures, but a quick, entertaining, informative read!

5 out of 5 stars Very sexy, very cool, and really informative! .......2006-11-16

I found this book to be a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining piece of reading. I have found that since I began working in the industry, I sometimes find myself somewhat overly informed on topics that deal with kink, fetishism, BDSM, and so on. I don't mind being knowledgeable at all. There was a time when reading a book on such a topic was very much like looking at pictures on the same topic. I was more than aroused. I was intrigued by the very idea that these activities took place. I couldn't wait to grow up and begin my exploration of the world where fantasies became realities, and all these curiously wonderful things truly existed. I now live in that world, and I am extremely grateful and happy that I do. While reading books on such topics can no longer serve the function they did when I was a much younger person, they serve a new function. Not only am I continuously entertained when I read a well written sex book, a book like that helps to keep my own ideas fresh, and helps me to guard against getting too "routine" in the constant expression of my own sexual appetite.

I believe that it is also worth mentioning the purpose a well written sex book serves in the online computer era. I love the online sex world, obviously since I'm here at this very moment. The wealth of information offered today is amazing. The convenience and accessibility we enjoy in the modern age is a gift. As much as I love what the internet has done for my sexual well being, there will never be a substitute for a good book.

I realize that writing a sex book full of information that could fill sex industry professionals with shock and awe would find a very limited audience. People starting their own journey of sexual adventure and self discovery need a good map. Sometimes the computer is too over loaded. It's not the best place to start.
That being said... I believe that "Violet Blue's Fetish Sex: An Erotic Guide for Couples" is a terrific starting place to begin such a journey. It is enlightening and humorous, while remaining very informative. It is also incredibly well written. As the title suggests, it is written for couples. As a romatic resource I can see how valuable this book would be for a variety of relationships. If a relationship needed a boost of sexual energy, this would serve as excellent material in sending the relationship in that direction. If the couple in question already enjoyed a healthy sexual relationship, this book could only make it healthier. It is a terrific teaching tool as well.

The information contained in "Fetish Sex" is well organized and it contains detailed descriptions and definitions. The writing is informative, yet casual and friendly. When I read Violet Blue's work, I feel as if I am learning a great deal, while enjoying a relaxed conversation about many of my very favorite topics. Another fantastic virtue of this book is that it arouses such intense curiosity about so many ideas. Your online adventures in fetish exploration will be well directed if you prepare yourself ahead of time by reading the work of Violet Blue. For anybody just beginning their own adventure of self discovery and sexual exploration, this is really one of the best places to start. Couples will love it. I would recommend it to anyone interested in fetish sex, couples, singles, experts, and beginners. It's a great book, on a great topic.

2 out of 5 stars "Fairy Books".......2007-01-20

I was very happy to find a book that contained all the "Fairy Books". However, the printing is so small you need a magnifying glass to read it. It is also very difficult to find the fairy tale you want because there is no index. If I had to do it over again I would buy the books individually, it is worth the investment

1 out of 5 stars reads like a phone book.......2007-01-13

The format of this book is AWFUL- as unattractive as you could possibly imagine and on fairly cheap paper as well. Had I known it would be as bad as it was I would never have bought it.

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE. Do NOT buy this book........2006-11-04

I was so excited to see that all of the "color book" fairy tale collections were gathered in one place. When I received the book I was VERY disappointed. No thought was given this volume, from the inappropriate cover image (stock photography of a rainforest frog?) to the pages within : no illustrations, no consideration given to the needs of the reader at all (just dense columns of small type intended solely to minimize the number of pages.) Poorly bound. All of which combine to remove any pleasure from reading these delightful stories.

Look for the individual colored books .... they're worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Lot of value for the money.......2006-08-10

If you want all of Andrew Lang's stories in a convenient format this is for you. Ideal for the busy parent who wants to read a story a night or for the voracious child reader, for whom the small print is not problem. It may not be fancy but it's tremendous value.

2 out of 5 stars Content outstanding; presentation poor.......2006-08-10

Having read Lang's Fairy stories when I was younger, I was truly looking forward to receiving this volume. To say the least, I was very dissappointed when I received it. How does this book fail? Let me count the ways;

1) The beautiful illustrations that I remember so well, are gone. There is not one illustration in the entire volume.

2) The Table of Contents is sorely lacking. The individual stories are not listed; only the books. Trying to find a specific story is challenging, to say the least. An index would have been helpful.

3) The print is SO tiny, that severe eye-strain is a definite probability.

4) What is with the tree frog on the cover?

My suggestion is, if you wish to read Lang's Fairy Book series, buy them individually. They are truly wonderful stories, but this volume is NOT the way to proceed. Buying them individually will assuredly cost more, but it will be well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Book.......2007-09-05

I bought this book because I was interested in learning more about the subject. The sex book genre is full of books that have an interesting subject, but appear to be written by 5th graders, and then printed without being edited. In addition, the publishing quality is frequently fairly low, which makes for a bad reading experience. This book, however, was a pleasant surprise. It's well-written, interesting, informative, and published in a professional manner. I recommend it to anyone looking to learn more about pegging.
