Book Description
There is a glory to life that most people-including believers-never see. In this insightful new book, John Eldredge presents the heart as central to life. Not only is the heart essential; the heart God has ransomed is also good. Building on these foundational truths, Eldredge shows readers why real Christianity is a process of restoration, where the broken parts of our hearts are mended and the captive parts are set free.
Waking the Dead leads listeners to understand how to live from the heart, care for their heart like the treasures of the kingdom, and give from fullness instead of emptiness. This message also shows how living from the heart can energize people to love God and others in a way they've never experienced, revealing to them life's purpose: fighting for the hearts of others.

Waking the Dead: The Glory of a Heart Fully Alive.......2007-08-09
This is one of my favorite all-time books. It is uplifting, encouraging, and a wonderful read. I have read it 3 times already, and look forward to going over it again. Every time I read it I get something new out of it. I have given many copies to friends and family, and recommended it to many others!
Awesome Book! Very Deep!.......2007-07-31
This book was really an eye opener. John Eldridge really hits on things that we all already know as Christ followers yet he puts things in perspective by using examples such as movies to make us aware that the glory of God is man fully alive!
A very deep book, I had to read a couple of chapters over again to get what Eldridge was saying, but I didn't mind at all because the chapters are short and it allows the reader to take in what Eldridge is trying to get across. "You are not what you think you are. There is a glory to your life that your Enemy (Satan) fears, and he is hell-bent on destroying that glory before you act on it." "The story of your life is the story of the long and brutal assault on your heart by the one who knows what you could be and fears it."
Warning! This book could change your life!.......2007-07-23
John Eldredge's "Waking the Dead" is both eye opening and soul changing. I've never heard or read this bilical perceptive and my heart was certainly ready to receive this wonderful message of God's love, hope and purpose for our lives while on earth. I'm buying extra copies soon to give to all of my friends and family!
Mandatory Read.......2007-07-23
Eye opening and crucial reading from John Eldridge. I have read Captivating, Journey of Desire, and Sacred Romance. I have loved them all, but this one is the best. I am recommending it to all my friends. The workbook that goes along with it enhances the experience and helps you to truly apply what you are learning to your life. I highly recommend you buy it!
Lifechanging.......2007-05-17
Respectfully, I simply don't care about all the 'analytical' criticism of John Eldredge, nor do I pay attention to all the overly legalistic slamming of his books. Simply put, God used this book and John to change many things in my life. I recommend this book as one of John's best! And a must read for those that are ready to step out beyond religiosity and into the "Kingdom" life that God wants us to abide in!

Book Description
Nature's Lessons in Healing Trauma...
Waking the Tiger offers a new and hopeful vision of trauma. It views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an instinctual capacity. It asks and answers an intriguing question: why are animals in the wild, though threatened routinely, rarely traumatized? By understanding the dynamics that make wild animals virtually immune to traumatic symptoms, the mystery of human trauma is revealed.
Waking the Tiger normalizes the symptoms of trauma and the steps needed to heal them. People are often traumatized by seemingly ordinary experiences. The reader is taken on a guided tour of the subtle, yet powerful impulses that govern our responses to overwhelming life events. To do this, it employs a series of exercises that help us focus on bodily sensations. Through heightened awareness of these sensations trauma can be healed.

Waking the Tiger.......2007-09-12
I work as a Certified Rolfer and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Peter Levine's genius is evident in this clear and concise piece of therapeutic literature. I am pleased to refer clients, friends, and colleagues to this book so that they might benefit from reading it. I have personally found the book to be of tremendous assistance in understanding the scientific basis of trauma as well as the psychospiritual significance of traumatic events.
Waking the Tiger.......2007-08-16
This is an excellent book on recognizing and offering healing help to those who are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. More people should become familiar with the method which could be invaluable not only for people with depression, anxiety, lonliness, and so much more, but also as an incredible tool to help our returning vets, who are undoubtedly suffering from this disorder. It is a book that should be touted by all book sellers.
Excellent introduction to Somatic Experiencing.......2007-08-11
Dr. Levin covers the energy stuckness involved in trauma and how to jump-start your natural healing process. Trauma is frozen energy as a result of being "too civilized" and denying or trying to not have your emotions in the moment. The book provides some useful understandings about how to release the stuck energy by sensing and moving your body and also getting in touch with positive mental energy. It also covers the genesis of trauma in more depth than many previous books on the subject. --Dr. Fred Gallo, author of Energy Tapping for Trauma: Rapid Relief from Post-Traumatic Stress Using Energy Psychology and Energy Tapping
Waking the Tiger.......2007-06-14
great service, book arrived in excellent condition
The Rave of the Ignorant.......2007-05-12
This book fundamentally ignores major aspects and driving forces that need to be addressed in our country and world regarding abuse, violence and resulting trauma, especially in regards to specific contributing factors of complex trauma and abuse. It seems as though Levine takes on minimal aspects in the healing of trauma, but fails to realize that trauma in some areas of this world are everyday occurrences and some types of more complex trauma will not be curtailed or remedied by such simple "healing methods". Levine also seems to completely deny that in many situations, the inherent fight/flight response in nature, especially those attached to memory, could just save your own life.
Before you order this book, (or any book on trauma) you should be aware that most people who profess "professional ability to address and cure trauma" have apparently never really been a true victims of serious and/or complex trauma and apparently don't understand certain key elements of how SEVERE trauma and abuse affects individuals, as well as their community, workplace and families. The few examples Levine offers are extremely limited examples and seem to be part of a marketing objectives for his trademark invention of "somatic experiencing"...think he'll treat you for free without some sort of financial compensation?
I will give him some credit for recognizing some aspects of the body and mind's innate natural responses as an aid to cure itself through its own accord, but he fails to exemplify or recognize that healing comes in varying degrees of personal capability, but this isn't anything new...it's what the body and mind does on its own through time, and especially with personal effort and awareness and a keen willingness to escape continued abuses and trauma! Levine's approach to "ignoring memory", stating that memory is even "false", is something that needs to be seriously considered, as memory is what often saves us from being victimized in the future by similar or repeated circumstances.
This book seriously fails to recognize that certain people in life are inherently in a vulnerable position to begin with, (i.e. elderly people or foster children with no family, psychiatric and medical patients) whose doctors seem to enjoy the facilitation of keeping them drugged to bypass deeper issues that could otherwise be resolved, but keep the financial wheels of the machine turning. And then there are the individuals whose families have victimized a family member through scapegoating measures and have even turned their backs on that child, while using him/her as a scapegoat for their own agendas. Levine's book fails to address those aspects of even more serious trauma resulting from that type of victimization!
It seems that this book addresses the more mundane types of trauma as with auto accidents or situations one CAN take measures to more easily prevent. He certainly overlooks some important key factors of the importance of memory and specific strategies for avoiding future abuses. Certainly the industry doesn't want you to know that you won't be treated or "cured", unless they are financially compensated for their efforts, and most can't or won't even address the deeper interrelated problems connected with continued abuses in the legal and justice systems, financial markets and businesses, government and political abuses of everyday life!
Failing to bring to light these other aspects of abuse and potential for "preventing or healing them" is a serious flaw of this book. I think Levine needs to do much more research in this area before writing another book that can actually help those in such situations.
This book does not adequately address situations where you are forced to live in dangerous conditions or address dangerous living conditions, such as bad neighborhoods, disaster prone areas, violent and manipulative agendas with political, legal and social problems that face society everyday that continue to be the root of trauma that is being completely ignored by professionals! These are serious aspects of serious abuse issues that are unfortunately being overlooked and/or ignored by policy makers, as well as "therapists". The latest legal, political and psychological catchphrases of "spousal abuse", "child abuse", and others at least address some family issues, have some legal recourse, but what about political, legal, medical, financial, and justice system abuses? If your lawyer is screwing you, do you think your therapist will really tell you the truth of the political situation of the legal system, even if he/she is aware of it? It's doubtful!
The only way this author could ever change my opinion after my extensive experiences with severe trauma, abuse, and serious corruption that has facilitated public illusions that I have witnessed in the mental health fields, legal fields, law enforcement fields, medical fields and many other professional fields bombarded with rampant and latent corruption, is for this author to address those absolute traumas by those responsible, contributing entities that Levine horribly fails to confront in this book. I personally know what kind of guts it takes to be willing to be hated for the truth...
It makes me wonder if the "rave reviews" aren't the undertakings of fellow members of academia, or if they are from those who are not fully capable of addressing abuse, absent of self-serving outcomes.
Book Description
Matt Sanfords life and body were irrevocably changed at age 13 on a snowy Iowa road. On that day, his familys car skidded off an overpass, killing Matts father and sister and leaving him paralyzed from the chest down and confined to a wheelchair. His mother and brother escaped from the accident unharmed but were left to pick up the pieces of their decimated family. This pivotal event set Matt off on a lifelong journey, from his intensive care experiences at the Mayo Clinic to becoming a paralyzed yoga teacher and founder of a non-profit organization. Forced to explore what it truly means to live in a body, he emerges with an entirely new view of being a whole person. Waking is a chronicle of that process. By turns agonizingly personal, philosophical, and heartbreakingly honest, this groundbreaking memoir takes the reader inside the body, heart, and mind of a boy whose world has been shattered. The author allows us to follow with him as he rebuilds from the ground up, searching for healing stories to help him reconnect his mind and his body. To do so, he must reject much of what traditional medicine tells him and instead turn to yoga as a centerpiece of his daily practice. The author finds not only a better life, but meaning and purpose in the mysterious distance that we all experience between mind and body. In searingly candid, frequently poetic language, Sanford pulls back the curtain on what it means to survive devastating trauma, from returning to a broken life to the uncertainty of finding sexual intimacy with a paralyzed body. But first and foremost the author offers a powerful message about the endurance of the human spirit, and of the body that houses it.
Customer Reviews:
For anyone who lives in a body.......2007-10-08
When my husband, a stroke survivor, ordered this book I did not read it immediately. I failed to understand it's relevance to MY life. Matthew Sanford has tapped into yogic wisdom in a deeply personal way, and although his story is of loss and reawakening through spinal chord injury, his message has value to anyone who lives in a body (or would like to).
Aside from the wisdom he offers, Matthew is a clear and compelling storyteller with a powerful mastery of writing. I read this book in two sittings because I could not tear myself away from it. Highly recommended for everyone over age 14.
Wonderful.......2007-09-29
This heart wrenching account helped me reconnect with the meaning of being in a body. I want to read it again already. I am a novice yoga teacher with 200 hour certification. I learned a lot about how we ignore our bodies, acting as though we don't really need them, and simultaneously thinking that we are our bodies, contradictory ideas that are both incorrect. A body is the interface between one's consciousness and the world of form in which one operates. Loving and listening to it make you more aware of oneness with everything.
Amazing story.......2007-06-26
I rarely write reviews, but I just finished this book and I have to put my thoughts down. The book is phenomenal - not only did Matt overcome a most devestating experience, he turned it around and made his life better because of it. He not only did it once - he did it over and over again.
I am a yoga fanatic and I also work in publishing. 95% of what my reading consists of memoirs, usually of individuals who have suffered very painful and difficult periods in their life. This book seemed to have everything I was interested in. Not to mention, I took a yoga class from Matt when visiting Minnesota a few years ago (a friend of mine said I had to try his class).
I am incredibly impressed by Matt's writing ability. It looks like he wrote his story himself -the writing is wonderful - at times poetic.
When I took the yoga class that Matt taught, I have to say that at first, it was quite distracting to be taught by someone in a wheelchair - especially Iyengar yoga which is so focused on alignment. But once the class was about 1/2 over, I totally forgot he was in a chair. He is so dedicated and interested in his students and focused on helping them, that the wheelchair quickly becomes a non-issue.
Congratulations Matt on all of your accomplishments and thank you for sharing your amazing story!
Inspiring.......2007-05-13
An acquaintance of Matthew Sanford's turned me onto his book and his work. Matthew Sanford's story of trauma and subsequent healing is well-communicated and inspiring to read. It has also opened a new path for me in my yoga training and in my own life. I highly recommend it for anyone who has a personal connection to trauma, injury, physical limitations, or who wants to help those who do.

Customer Reviews:
It was ok, if you like erotic content........2007-10-09
I thought that this book was decent after you get past all the sex. Towards the end I could not put it down though. "Sleeping With Stangers" started slow and ended great which made you want to read the sequel. This book does the same and leaves you with a pretty good feel by the end.
I couldn't tell..........2007-10-01
I couldn't tell if this was fiction or straight porn. I would have considered EJD a complete marketing genius for this sequel of books being put out within months of each other, but I really was disappointed.I like sex, but really now, do we really need that much. I believe that it was at least 180 pages dedicated to freakin'...okay, im sure there was something else to write about.
Couldn't put it down!.......2007-09-28
Another book by Mr. Eric Jerome Dickey that I could not put down! A sequel must-read for any Dickey fan... His style of writing entrances the reader, putting them directly into the world of which he is writing - so much so that I find myself gasping or laughing out loud at climactic events in each of his stories. His books are not for the faint of heart, or modest-in-life, and his writing transcends skin-pigmentation barriers, keeping his faithful readers anxious for the next release!
Better than SWS.......2007-09-25
The sequel, Waking with Enemies is much better than Sleeping with Strangers. Of course it picks up where we last left our anti-hero, Gideon, in London, pursuing and being pursued. The cast of charactors are also along for the ride, Arizona, Mrs. Jones, Lola Mack, Bruno, Tebby. The story finally gets to the bottom of Gideon's issues with his Mother which gives us more insite in to why he's a killer. It's quite violent and one sentence really sent a little chill down my spine, "a quick twist and there was a soft pop." with all the bloodshed, I didn't see that one coming for some reason. There's so much sex in WWE that it actually becomes boring and I skipped threw a lot of that. But there's something about Gideon that's alluring inspite of everything, and not just his bedroom skills. He's sensual, romantic and desirable in some strange, scary way. Over all it's much better than SWS, which I really didn't like. But after reading this, I think I'll re-read SWS and see if I change my mind. Too bad Mr. Dickey didn't just combine the stories into one novel. I'd like to meet Gideon again....he's a "good-bad-boy"!
Didn't Flow Like Sleeping With Strangers.......2007-09-23
I loved "Sleeping with Strangers", and that's why it pains me to say that "Waking with Enemies" fell terribly short of my expectations. Wow! What else can I say? It seemed as though there was a mad rush to the finish line with this book. Sex, sex, sex, sex, and even more sex but very little else. The action was brought to a screeching halt, and then there was even more sex (and I am never offended and rarely bored by the subject) but come on Dickey.
Anyway, I have not been able to force myself to finish this book. So, I don't even know if it will be worth it in the end. However, I am more than half way through, and yet, when I do resume this book I will be starting at yet another `sexcapade'. I think I would have been better off being left in suspense after "Sleeping with Strangers".
Again I state that "Sleeping with Strangers" was absolutely the best. I wish Dickey would have just finished it up in a few extra chapters.
If you picked up this book before reading "Sleeping with Strangers", please note that you can't judge Dickey based on this alone. Please read the first book.
*** UPDATE ***
Well, it would have been easy to just erase some of what I wrote, but I just want to show that sometimes you just have to push through and get to the end of the book. So, I pushed through, what I thought, was an obsessive amount of sex (with a hint of, uhhhh, sex), and I found that it was well worth my efforts.
I finally finished this book, and I enjoyed the last half of it immensely. Midway through the book, Dickey finally got back to the intensity that began with "Sleeping with Strangers". Just like the first book, the characters were amazing.
"Sleeping with Strangers" and "Waking with Enemies" are both worth reading.

Really great stuff!
I highly recommand it!

Excellent Resource.......2007-02-03
This book is co-written with Craig McConnell. It is a good book that will help you take Waking the Dead to a whole new level. It follows the book chapter by chapter and is in a nice easy format to use. Each chapter begins and ends with a check on 'Where is your heart now?' Kind of checking in on where you are. When I worked through this with my buddy Pastor Bob, this was our check in where we were. While working through this, we both went through hard times; I lost a job I loved and his wife was let go and spent a long time off of work, right after they bought a new house. This book helped us process those events and many others in our presents and our pasts.
This workbook has fewer subsections than the Wild At Heart Field Manual, The areas are the:
· Heart Monitor
· A First Reaction
· The Big Ideas
It used pillows/clouds for Big Ideas to outline where the chapter will go and then has sections for each. To Clarify goes deeper than the book on specific points or outlines them in a deeper level.
As a workbook there is lots of space for answers, even going back and writing answers again and again, each time you work through it. Bob liked a new feature and I did not, for some of the tougher questions have examples from members of the Ransomed Heart team. Bob liked those because they gave you more food-for-thought when you were unsure how to answer. I found them annoying because I often took the question a different direction they did, and if I read them first, it often limited how I perceived the questions.
Overall this book is an excellent resource for working with the book Waking the Dead and for growing into a deeper understanding of your life in Christ.
good companion to the book.......2006-11-10
This journal is a great companion to the book "Waking the Dead." Upon first reading the book I wasn't completely captured by it, but the journal really explores the book in a deeper way - great for group discussion or individually.
thinking someone picked some green sour grapes back there.......2005-02-05
I read Wild at Heart when it first came out even though I'm a woman. I'm a wild-at-heart woman who knows that the Lord desires to have us "run with abandon" toward Him. This book was inspiring even with some gender distractions ... I might recommmend that the person who read this book and deemed it worthless might back up if s/he is really seeking an exciting relationship with the Lord and read Divine Romance or Journey of the Heart and be daring enough to let The Lover look into his heart!
Great guidebook.......2004-06-28
I love this book...and the guidebook. This isn't a typical study guide that asks obvious questions that can be easily discerned from just reading the text. It's not a "mindlessly answer the questions" kind of guidebook. No, this one makes one think...and causes one to digest and process the lifechanging truths in the book. I personally enjoyed reading the authors sharing their hearts because it made me feel "normal"...and it made the authors feel human. This book and guidebook are among my most favorite books and most lifechanging.
Book Description
This compelling narrative of a woman's near-fatal deliberate overdose following the death of her husband provides an emotionally honest road map for using therapy to treat depression and restore hope. Honest, jargon-free, and written from a patient's perspective, this work explores a range of issues underlying depression, including child abuse, loss, long-term caregiving, and bereavement.
Customer Reviews:
a remarkable exploration of grief and depression.......2006-07-16
Terry Wise tells the story of her husband's illness and her grief and downward spiral into depression following his death through the lens of therapy. She shares not only her innermost fears but her exploration of them in an honest and insightful manner. Working through grief is exactly that-work- and Terry shows us just how hard this work can be. Terry's courageous story includes her therapist, whose tenacity permitted Terry to face and work toward conquering her demons. Waking Up is a glorious account of the therapeutic process and the determination of the human spirit to survive.
Wow........2006-01-27
This was a *profound* book written with brutal honesty. Ms. Wise doesn't just captivate you from the first page... she holds you by the gut and pulls you into her life (and death) experience. There is nothing flowery about this book. It takes you right into the heart of her grief and pain... and more, it shows vividly how this downward spiral is such a slippery slope.
I was greatly inspired by Ms. Wise's struggle to hold on and her Therapist's indominatable quest to help her find the root of her devastation. "Cali" is a therapist who defies tradition and dares greatly. She *cares* about her patients.
But above and beyond all of this, I found myself in awe (and I don't use that word lightly) of Ms. Wise's bravery in writing this book. She opened up her very soul for her readers to see... knowing that others may judge or comment or misunderstand... she decided to do this with the hopes that it would make a difference for others.
Well, in this reader's case, she succeeded. Thank you, Ms. Wise.
Letter to Terry Wise.......2005-05-03
My dear Terry,
I had the privilege of meeting you during your CMI presentation in Phoenix AZ this past April 4, 2005. I bought a copy of your book that day, and how I wish I would have read it before I met you -- because then I could have told you in person what I thought of it. "Waking Up" is without a doubt one of the most powerful personal accounts of therapy I've ever read. I am astounded at the honesty in your writing, and at the courage it must have taken for you to decide to get it published. What is more astounding is that I don't think you realize what a gift you've given to the world. I wish every student learning to be a therapist would read your book, and every person who's ever been depressed or contemplated suicide, and everyone who's ever been thrust into the role of care giver, and every hospice worker and bereavement counselor who is companioning the bereaved -- and everyone who just wants to read a terrific book. I want you to know that I've told all my hospice colleagues about you, I've added your book to my list of recommended readings on the Articles and Books page of my Grief Healing Web site, and I will do everything in my power to help you spread your important, uplifting, life-saving message. I am honored to have met you, and I wish for you what you are giving to all the rest of us: nothing but the best.
With love and admiration,

Tears down the stigma of discussing depression and suicide.......2004-06-29
Sad, shocking, gut-wrenching and immensely readable. It's high time we consider suicide and depression as the serious public health issues they are -- and not as taboo topics or "out of bounds" matters of privacy. Ms. Wise's story shows us the importance of breaking down the cultural/societal barriers to open and frank discourse. Her message is equally valuable to professionals laypeople alike: Look for the warning signs (which she outlines) among patients, friends and/or family and be assertive in stepping in to help.
Bravo Ms. Wise.......2004-04-22
Well-told story of a woman's journey back to sanity from the terribly place of depression. We can forget that we only think one thought at a time, and we can choose which thought we wish to think. When we remember it, just small changes of thought and consequent behavior can turn our lives entirely around. Bravo Ms. Wise.

She's in love with her preacher.
But it's not as if Amanda O'Leary set out to fall for the most gorgeous (and unattainable) man this side of South Carolina Low Country. It's just that he organized building a cozy home for her and her children at a time when the future looked darker than blackstrap molasses. Not even her own father, the arrogant and wealthy Big Max, would have done as much for her. But that's a whole other kettle of fish.
Caleb can count on fingers and toes why his attraction to widowed Amanda is plain wrong. How can he objectively counsel this chin-up spitfire without letting his emotions -- and imagination -- run wild? And now that Big Max has burdened him with not one secret, but two, he knows his priorities should be mending fences between father and daughter -- but he can't help trying to build a place for himself in her heart first . . .

Waking Up In Charleston.......2007-09-09
I got hooked on Sherryl Woods with Flamingo Diner and since look for everything she writes this was the conclusion of an older trilogy her most recent was Magnolia series just all about real people real life, one a person can sink into and forget who they are or where they are, for awhile...............
Pales in comparison to its predecessors.......2006-07-12
In "Flirting With Disaster," we learned that Amanda Maxwell fell in love with mechanic Danny O'Leary and eloped with him, thereby losing the love and respect of her benevolent father, self-appointed town patriarch, Big Max. Danny tragically died and the mountain of debt he amassed to try to give Amanda a great lifestyle resulted in her and her children being penniless. The town rallied under the direction of pastor Caleb Webb to build her a new home. Caleb has always had a soft spot for Amanda, but the reasons for his past divorce keep him from becoming more than friends with her. Friends that kiss, that is.
"In Waking Up in Charleston," Big Max has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and wants to make amends to Amanda and her brood, but too much time and bad blood has passed. His only link to the family is weekly visits from Caleb and he has forbidden the minister from telling Amanda of his condition since he does not want her to come to him out of pity. He has also been harboring additional secrets about Amanda's past, and wants to come clean before his disease has robbed him of his faculties. Both need to overcome some hefty pride to meet in the middle.
In addition, Caleb is providing guidance to two teens who are determining whether they should get married due to an unplanned pregnancy; Dinah and Cord from "The Back Up Plan" are welcoming their first child, and ever competitive Maggie wants to start her own family.
I was a bit disappointed with this last installment. It pales in comparison to its predecessors - particularly Dinah and Cord's story. There is just too much going on and as a result, this reader just wanted to yell uncle! It seemed a lot longer than 400 pages, and yet I still did not get a sense that the story was complete.
Not my favorite of the series.......2006-07-12
Waking Up In Charleston by Sherryl Woods is the final installment of her Charleston-set contemporary romance series. This is the story of a preacher and single/widowed mom. I loved The Backup Plan (1) and Flirting with Disaster (2) but I found this one slow.
terrific relationship drama .......2006-05-03
Known throughout the South Carolina Low Country as being benevolent, William "Big Max" cut off his beloved only child Amanda when she eloped with loser Danny O'Leary. Several years later, Danny is dead and Amanda raises three youngsters while trying to pay off her late husband's massive debt; she and Big Max remain estranged.
Preacher Caleb Webb arranged for a house to be built for Amanda and her children with supplies contributed from a friend's construction company, labor mostly volunteered by his congregation, and property secretly given by Max (see FLIRTING WITH DISASTER). Caleb loves Amanda while her children think of him as their father. However, he knows that he deceived her by hiding his close relationship with her dad and as she learns more of what he concealed, the angrier she gets. Caleb sacrifices his dreams to marry Amanda in order to reconcile the ailing Big Max, an Alzheimer's victim, and Amanda before it is too late for her children to know their grandfather.
This terrific relationship drama stars likable protagonists who allow pride bias their decisions before learning that is no replacement for the love of family. Amanda is a courageous individual struggling with her feelings for the Preacher who has made life better for her and her children; the kids love him as if he is their father. Max wants so badly to ask his daughter to forgive him, but is unable to swallow the devastation of her possibly rejecting him as he feels he deserves so he works in secret. Caleb is pulled in two directions as he wants to shout to everyone he loves Amanda though that is obvious to all, but also wants to reconcile father and daughter. Sherryl Woods provides a deep character driven tale.

At a time when the fate of the world seems increasingly uncertain, The Translucent Revolution provides a compelling and convincing argument that radical positive change is taking place throughout our global society, resulting in increasing numbers of people from diverse and divergent backgrounds who are awakening to a state Ardagh defines as "translucent." In the process, they are becoming part of a potentially critical mass of people capable of triggering a worldaround awakening of deeper purpose, joy, compassion, self-fulfillment, and service to others.
Ardagh studied this "translucent revolution" for more than a decade, after years of spiritual seeking that culminated in his own awakening of his true inner state of being after famed spiritual teacher H.W. L. Poonja asked him, "Who is the one trying to be free? Who are you really?" What he subsequently discovered was that experiencing his inner awakening was far easier than living and maintaining it, but in the years since, he discovered ways of doing so, finding in the process that many others around the globe are now doing so as well.
As part of his research for The Translucent Revolution, Ardagh interviewed others from all walks of life he are awakening to similar experiences, including Ram Dass, Eckhart Tolle, Jean Houston, and Neale Donald Walsch. In all, he interviewed over 170 people, compiling 250 tapes and 3,000 pages of transcripts, the essence of which he distilled into this book. After opening with an examination of what "translucence" is and how it can be lived after the radical awakening that leads to it, Ardagh then explores how translucence can positively transform individuals in terms of their self-identity, personal actions, feelings, relationships, sexual partnering, parenting, and art. From there he examines the affects of translucence in collective society in terms of education, business, health care, religion, and global sense of community. Throughout the book, he provides readers with many experiential exercises they can do, both in the form of "Try It Yourself" exhortations and gentler "Nudges" that can be performed individually and with a partner. The end result is a doorway to a transformational journey that literally leaps off the written page.--Larry Trivieri
Book Description
There is a gentle but profound revolution in human consciousness happening throughout the world—it has affected millions of people from all walks of life, and the numbers continue to multiply exponentially. The breakthroughs they have experienced are startlingly similar and are marked by a new sense of well-being, increased joy in life, diminished fear, and a natural impulse to serve and contribute to the world in a real way.
For more than a decade, Arjuna Ardagh has studied this worldwide advance in human consciousness marked by what he calls "translucents"— individuals who have undergone a spiritual awakening deeply enough that it has permanently transformed their relationship to themselves and to reality, while allowing them to remain involved in ordinary life.
The Translucent Revolution draws on the author's dialogues with thousands of writers, teachers, and workshop participants around the world who display characteristics of "translucence." He blends observation, anecdote, and research, including commentaries from leading pioneers in the field of human consciousness like Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie, and Neale Donald Walsch to offer simple, concrete strategies for cultivating a translucent way of life. He offers a blueprint for positive change and an optimistic perspective on these uncertain times.

misleading.......2007-10-02
If you're already a "translucent," you definitely don't need this book. If you're not a "translucent," this book won't necessarily help you become one. Very self-conscious and self-congratulatory.

Soon to be a motion picture at your local IMAX theatre. :)
A research project turned marketing exploit. The made-up words "Iago trance" and "translucence" are so pompous I had to laugh, still how does one name such things? I'm sure the poor author was only trying his best to convey. A fine attempt, if way to long and wordy. Maybe just a magazine article instead of a thesis?
I expect more and more of this type of book to be coming out, to all our entertainment or lack of.
For translucent readers.......2007-02-27
Warning! The book will not make sense unless you have dumped the egoic self and have become translucent yourself as you will notice by reading other reviews. If you have gone through the change and are feeling confused about all the ramifications, this book will explain everything in detail. It takes a while for the mind to become integrated again and this book will dramatically speed up that process. Especially useful are the spiritual myths he debunks such as "Awake people are not identified with the personality and therefore have no interest in changing it."

I have gained some insight to myself by reading this book, it can be a little heavy going so recommend to not rush it. My transaction with Amazon.com was seamless - what a great service.

This book spoke to me.......2006-12-27
The Waking Dream
Ray Grasse
Ray Grasse's "The Waking Dream" seems to take pages right out of my life. If you are one of those who sees symbolic reference in incidence and coincidence, this book is you. Grasse calls us "symbolists". For years I have been impressed with the subtle genius of the universe. Like the time I hit my brakes on black ice, and could neither stop nor steer, while on the radio Ian Anderson piped "Skating Away"; or the time when driving to Lake Ontario, an ex-girlfriend asked her kids, "Would you like to take a trip to Florida next summer?" A street signed loomed closer, reading "Mart's Way". Of course, I knew that this woman intended to take a trip with an old boyfriend named Marty, which was, in fact, her very intention, as I learned later. Or, perhaps I will encounter a particular word several times throughout the day or week...not just any word, but some unusual word. Or the night my cousin, at 17, died as a result of trauma, and coincidentally a lightning strike caused a complete blackout in my town. These are but a very few instances that come to mind, real life examples of the kind of material found in Waking Dream.
Grasse does not even question whether universal subverse exists, he approaches Waking Dream as if underlying meaning were a given fact. If we approach life accordingly, we can begin the real work of unravelling life's "omenological" roadmap. The interconnectedness of things will not just abound, it will be impossible to avoid. Rejoice in renewed faith!
The most useful book on the hermeneutics of the living universe I have ever read. Extremely thorough, thoughtfully and methodically written. Considering all the so-called enlightenment books I have read that seemed hurriedly and amateurishly churned out, Grasse deserves outstanding recognition for what is obviously quality time well spent on Waking Dream.
Very well done.......2002-09-27
This book changed the way I see the world around me. It's one of those rare books that effectively help make sense of the "sublime" natural of reality. Books like the Celestine Prophecy try in their new-age way to address this concept of symbolic language around us, but this book is not fluff; it marries the esoteric with psychological principals, and does it in a demonstrably REAL way.
Fantastic reading. Buy it now.
What More Could One Ask of a Book?.......2001-10-20
This book represents the best, most comprehensive, exposition of the symbolist world view in a single volume. Infact, if I wanted to truly understand the deep, fundamental roots of mysticism or occultism, this is the book that I would read first. Symbolism stands in contrast to stark materialism in that it assigns inherent Meaning to the world. Symbolism holds that this physical, material world is the lowest level of reality and not it's totality, as "science" would have us believe. The lower levels merely reflect the archetypical currents, patterns, and laws of the higher: "As above, so below." To personally validate this mode of thinking in one's own life is to experience permanent mind shift. You never see creation as dead, sterile, and meaningless again. What more can one ask of a book or a teaching?
Open a whole universe of awareness.......2000-12-28
Ray Grasse clearly outlines many thought processes which open the reader's mind in several fields of metaphysical studies. The reading level is some what high, so a good base of study on archetypes, Eastern theology, and all around understanding of the Crusades of the Light Warriors are helpful. Great book. A must have for reference and study.
Contemporary, revealing and relative.......1999-03-26
Mr.Grasse brings to light the realization that everything that could ever be known or felt is a symbolic event. The issue of synchronicity and correspondences are age old understandings of how the system works. It is the way we perceive ourselves and our world. His work is extremely well researched and documented. Soon you realize that you too are a meaningful participant in an on-going synchronistic event.

Ecology and spirituality are deftly intertwined in this well-written discussion of how we can save and preserve life on earth. Vermont author Thom Hartman offers a highly persuasive argument for adopting the spiritual values of our ancient ancestors, which means living with a strong connection to the earth as well as the sun that nourishes us all. Nowadays, humans often perceive themselves as separate from nature and born to dominate it, says Hartman who lays out some frightening, albeit thorough, research on the destruction of the planet. But as the book progresses, he guides readers into a convincing and intelligent vision for reversing our destructive ways.
Mostly, we could all use an attitude adjustment. For example, he explains how native and tribal cultures often considered all forms of life to be as sacred as human life--an attitude that may be one of our best shots at planetary longevity. Hartman devotes his final section to "What the Average Person Can Do," including chapters titled, "Turn Off the TV," "The Modern-Day Tribe: Intentional Community," and "Reinventing Our Daily Lives and Rituals." --Gail Hudson
Book Description
A call to consciousness combining spirituality and ecology that offers hope for the future.
As the world's population explodes, cultures and species are wiped out, and we have now reached the halfway point of our supplies of oil, humans the world over are confronting difficult choices about how to create a future that works.
Thom Hartmann proposes that the only lasting solution to the crises we face is to re-learn the lessons our ancient ancestors knew -- those which allowed them to live sustainably for hundreds of thousands of years -- but which we've forgotten.
Hartmann shows how to find this new yet ancient way of seeing the world and the life on and in it, allowing us to touch that place where the survival of humanity may be found.

Every human must know this information!.......2006-07-25
This is the most important book I have ever read. Thom does a good job in laymen's terms in laying everything out.
I read a review bashing this book, and it made my stomach turn. You just have your ignorant head in the sand! I have a five year-old who will be about 40, 45 when -- if we don't change our ways -- the oil, water and trees will run out. We're seeing signs of this already, for example, the levels of the water aquifers around the country. Do you think us lefties are making this up?? Check into it yourself! We can't eat or drink money.
Yes, turn off your TV, conserve energy, do everything you can now to prevent these scenerios from happening, AND... read this book and give copies to as many people as possible!
Change now or face the consequences.......2006-07-21
I kept reading about this book during my peak oil, climate change readings, and I finally ordered it and read it. What a thought provoking book! I had read Daniel Quinn's Ismael and Story of B, and this continues the thoughful line of thinking that our current civilization is not working and we had better change our course before the whole thing collapses from overpopulation, CO2 warming, and the loss of cheap energy. I plan on buying more copies and giving them to my college age nieces so they can read about the world they are about to inherit. Maybe they can help shape the change that will affect the rest of their lives. Thank you Thom Hartmann!
think for youself, question authority, save the world.......2004-04-25
This book is the most thought-provoking books I have read in a long time that sheds a lot of light on the current environmental and social conditions of the world. The first 2/3 of the book is very tough to get thru as the environmental outlook is very dim, however the last 1/3 is very optimistic and really makes you feel like you can make a difference (prayer is a great example).
The book covers topics like the differences between the Older culture (tribal society with much respect and a strong relationship with nature, e.g. plants and animals) and our Younger culture (the dominator city/state mindset that has been pulling the world down for thousands of years and is ultimately destined to fail).
After reading this book, you will have great respect for tribal societies like the Native Americans and the South American tribes and shamans. For example, women are treated as equals in Native American tribes and everyone takes care of everyone else in the tribe. They are spiritually rich, which we are spiritually poor in the so-called "first-world civilized" countries.
Hartmann is a very natural and free-flowing writer and this is one of those books you will read very quickly, it's that interesting and important. He does cite most of his sources for the facts presented in the book as well, which is respectable.
Buy it, read it, let your friends borrow and spread the world before it's too late. Turn off your TV and think more.
Remember the Long Count version of the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 AD. We're running out of time. Do it for the children.
Evolution or devolution? You decide........2004-04-05
I have seldom read a book that has so much to offer in terms of its premise and yet just doesn't deliver the goods--despite the glowing recommendation by the normally sane Neale Donald Walsch. The author,Thom Hartmann artfully blends useful statistics with arguments that are taken out of context and then rejiggers them into an eco-agenda that misses the big picture and purpose of human life. On page 174 we have the following gem:
"Tribes are characterized by five primary traits.
1. political independence
2. egalitarian structure
3. get their resources from renewable local sources
4. have a unique sense of their own identity
5. respect the identity of other tribes"
The author actually seems to believe that the tribal structure is preferable to our own democratic system. He has perhaps never visited Africa where tribes for centuries have looted and pillaged each other for slaves and wives and where today tribalism is the greatest form of racism in Africa.
The author's view is even more artfully captured by a quote he lists at the top of page 118 from Gore Vidal:"Think of the earth as a living organism that is being attacked by billions of bacteria whose numbers double every forty years. Either the host dies, or the (parasite) dies or both die."This is eco-gibberish at it finest. There is no concept here of humanity and the earth in partnership but only one of host and infection. And what my friends does one do with an infection? One kills it. Is this how one should think of the human race?
This is the fundamental problem with most eco-fairy tales. They talk about sustainable resources, they talk about conservation but what they really believe is that human life is a blot upon the earth and if we only would use condoms, commit infanticide on a large scale and practice sexual tolerance (read: promote homosexuality) can we relieve ourselves from the scourge of overpopulation. The author and other like minded figures simply cannot conceive of the human richness that is produced by families that have offspring that create businesses, invent new products and create wealth and improve life for millions--all they can think about is mankind as a consumer of the earth's scant resources, rather than as a partner in producing evolutionary and cultural wealth.
In this extraordinarily unbalanced book, which is subtitled waking up to personal and global transformation not one word is mentioned about sexual self restraint or the affect/effect of virtue and vice upon human thinking. Aside from some useful statistics on the vices of the Spanish colonization of the Americas, The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight totally misses the point of human life. We can make the earth a better place by working in partnership with the existing ecosystems within which we exist but returning to tribalism, limited sustenance and primitive technology is nothing short of a call for human devolution.
The author is entirely mistaken in his assumption that previous civilizations have failed due to the rapid depletion of resources--those were contributing factors but the emerging picture that modern scholarship paints is that in almost in all instances, the ruling classes depleted their moral and intellectual capital via what could only be described as moral and spiritual vice, and devolved with frightening rapidity into violence, anarchy and ungovernability.
If the author would only use his own information to think more clearly about what he is really saying, he would come up with something extraordinarily interesting. For example, on page 217 he talks about the intensity of quantum waves that are in phase with each other as being the square of the sum of those waves. Thus if you have 1,000 people who believe in anything that has an actual quantum effect of 1000 squared, which yields the affect/effect as 1,000,000 or one million. Thus when you have 1,000 people who have erronious points of view, the error factor is multiplied enormously. Likewise the power for good is also squared. Apply this concept to virtue and vice and you see the enormous damage that is done by vice (particularly vices involving the lack of self-restraint or as the ancients described it, continence) and the enormous good that is done by virtue or excellence. So, rather than polarizing the issue by making our social ills attributable solely to the failure of corporations and national entities to embrace tribalism and "green" values, the author would be far better served by engaging and then enlarging the notion of what constitutes virtue and vice. Tribal and other green values are as much at risk as are corporate and democratic values unless the quantum and moral dynamics of virtue and vice are understand and applied from top to bottom in our society. By having such a map we might have a force multiplier for real social change that everybody would benefit from--no matter what their beliefs are.
Simply Awakening.......2004-01-17
Simply a must read for all Earthlings! The book begins with the following paragraph, ýIn the 24 hours since this time yesterday over 200,000 acres of rainforest have been destroyed in our world. Fully 13 million tons of toxic chemicals have been released into our environment. Over 45,000 people have dies of starvation, 38,000 of them children. And more than 130 plant or animal species have been drive to extinction by the action of humans. (ý) And all this just since yesterday.ý
A recommended read for environmentalist, and all those consumerist about to hit the mall this weekend. I would also make a plea that this is an absolute MUST read for each and every one of our children. This book provides well developed and presented information on the state of our environment. The breadth of information is presented in numerous ways including personal stories, analogies, newspaper articles, research papers, and is spotted with great humor, as well as alarming cold-hard facts.
This book is a significant body of work to awaken our lost-sense of Earthliness and re-awaken within us the abandoned traditions of our ancestors. This work pushes you to the brink of emotional and spiritual collapse, and then guides you back gently with inspirational thoughts and self-motivating ideas.
The book is divided in to three parts. Part 1 provides, very bluntly, undeniable and unambiguous information, facts, and support as to the nature of the irreparable damage that we humans, and specifically corporations, have inflicted upon the Earth. Part 2 provides a discussion on the anthropological aspects of various cultures and tribes, and how that particular view affected their attitude towards animals (including other ýhumansý) and the Earth itself. Part 3 is dedicated to discussing steps that each of us can take to impede the current trend of self-destruction and Earth-destruction.
I did not grant a review rating of 5 due to my perceived weakness of Part 3. I did not find Part 3 as compelling, informative, or well-defined as the previous two parts, and was left with an uncertainty of direct and immediate actions I could partake in. With that said however, I would state that Part 1, and Part 2 make this a must read for all environmentalist and anyone doubting that Global Warming is not a serious threat to national, economic, and environmental security.
