4 out of 5 stars A good book for what it is, with caveats.......2007-07-12

This book describes, through subjective stories and sometimes rather overly sentimental and repetitious narrative, how to relate to a dog as a thinking, feeling being with a soul of his own, rather than as a furry domestic "object" to be systematically molded by force to man's will.

There's an upside and a downside to this approach. The upside is that Suzanne is clearly a person who deeply loves and cares for her animals, and she desires to inspire others to adopt a similar approach and thus obtain a closer connection with their dog on a deeper and more meaningful level. Based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews of the book here, she is largely successful in this effort. The downside is that this approach is difficult if not impossible to quantify, and as such the book is neither a manual of training nor technique, which Suzanne openly admits. If you have an interest in a specific "behavior problem", this isn't the book you're looking for. However, if you have an interest in the underlying issues and human-canine dynamics that may very well be the source of the "behavior problem", then you'll at least be well on the road to finding your answer here. And given the fact that many "behavior problems" in dogs actually arise because of our own incompetence or misunderstanding of dog psychology, many people (and dogs) would benefit tremendously by our learning to get in touch at some level with "the canine soul".

The one small criticism that I have about the book is that I think Suzanne is rather disingenuous and over-the-top in her blasting of Vicki Hearne. Given the opposite ends "A" and "B" on the scale of approaches to dog training -- with Suzanne at "A" and Vicki at "B", Suzanne's pendulum clearly swings too far to the left at times.

I say this because, all deference to doggie souls aside, they are *still* and will always be dogs. As such, their neurological systems are designed so that they learn MOST EFFECTIVELY through methods that utilize operant conditioning. As Jean Donaldson so appropriately points out in her excellent book "The Culture Clash: A Revolutionary New Way to Understanding the Relationship Between Humans and Domestic Dogs", training methods based on operant conditioning are the widest window that is open to us in this regard and thus, the ones we should use.

This is not to say that one should not also listen to what Suzanne Clothier has to teach us. Because in the end, the absolute best that you can do for your dog is to understand him not only as a thinking, feeling being in his own right, but also how to teach him in ways that he'll best understand.

The Culture Clash: A Revolutionary New Way to Understanding the Relationship Between Humans and Domestic Dogs

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding perspective.......2007-06-08

This is not a cookbook on training a dog. It's not a list of dos and don'ts. Suzanne Clothier gives us insight and understanding and if we're paying attention, helps us to develop a way of interacting with our canine companions that is mutually beneficial. And I think that's the key - the book can give us the tools to develop our own way. Dogs are still dogs and are not humanized. It's worth reading again and again and it's definitely a superb gift.

5 out of 5 stars Bones Would Rain from the Sky: Deepening Our Relationships with Dogs.......2007-03-16

This should be mandatory reading for anyone with a dog and recommended reading for anyone who has to relate to any living creature.

5 out of 5 stars Changed My Dog's Life.......2007-02-10

I brought home a human- and dog-reactive (aggressive) adult border collie about a year and half ago. He came from an unknown background, had been in shelters on and off for 5 months, and was a mess. I had no idea what to do.

After about a month of wading through countless training books, all of whose philosophies seemed to tout some other "miracle system," I was fortunate enough to stumble onto this one. Clothier's take on my dog's reactions to a frightening world gave me the perspective I needed to help him, rather than frighten him more. Most enlightening was her section about "friendly" dogs who charge at other dogs "just to say hi." Once I could interpret the other dogs' behavior and body language through my own dog's eyes, I could finally help him. I realized that a charging dog - regardless of intention - looked like an attacking dog, at least to Buddy. Knowing this, I could step in, intercede, to protect my dog. This was crucial in giving him the faith that I could handle the tough situations we meet in our day to day walks. Trusting me, he let down his guard, and has become a dog who looks "normal" to those who meet him. We even get "Oh, he's sweet" comments from people on our walks now! He may never be as easy-going as a lab, but I'd say he's 90% of the way to "normal."

"Bones Would Rain from the Sky," along with "The Other End of the Leash" by Patricia McConnell, should be on every dog owner's bookshelf. The more challenging your dog, the more you need to read these books. And once you've read these, you'll be able to filter out the mush in the other books.

1 out of 5 stars hard to extract the meat of the topic from this book.......2007-01-03

It is no doubt that this author 'loves' animals. That is apparent. What also is apparent is that the author is not a writer. Many chapters started out with a 'subject' of discussion only to find by the end of the chapter the author touched on everything 'but' the subject leaving the reading saying "huh". She vicariously relives too much of her own experience losing her self in it to the point that she forgets what it was that she wanted the reader to gain thus losing the the essence of the point. There is a comparison to famed horse whisperer Monty Roberts, to whom I have personally worked. She is not a monty roberts. I beleive she is a caring individual with a lot of stories just not a writer. I do not recommend this book as a guide to training or understanding dogs.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating concept superbly executed.......2004-01-01

This book breaks down barriers between the races. And what an entertaining and intriguing concept- send in a question you would never ask in public and get a frank reply. I couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars john.......2004-01-01

"Wet Dogs" gets to the heart of cross-cultural dialogue in a manner unlike any effort that has been undertaken in the past two decades. An astonishing, provocative yet unbiased look at how our "small" differences must be discussed before the larger ones can be dissected. Highly recommended reading for young and old alike, as well as students and business leaders.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2007-01-29

The State of Tennessee sends a book each month to every young child in the state who is signed up for the program. This book was the selection for, I think, December 2006. Of the several dozen books on my 17-month-old's bookshelf, this is one of three he routinely picks out to be read to him before bedtime. It is beautifully illustrated, and a pleasure to read aloud, even for someone who doesn't particularly enjoy reading aloud, like myself. I've never reviewed a childrens book, but I liked this one so much, that I felt the need to chime in with a few words of praise for the author and illustrator.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, fun story.......2005-01-26

My daughter is 18 months and will sit several times a day for a half hour at a time with this book. The illustrations are colorful. The prose has great rhythm to it as well. She loves to pick out all of the animals in the story. The book counts up to 10 and back down, following a little girl and her dog through a rainy day.

5 out of 5 stars Darling, cozy, beautiful rainy day book!.......2004-08-16

I usually restrict my purchases to the most classic, well-loved children's books, but when I saw this one, I couldn't resist, and I love it already, and am sure that children will, too.

The book follows a little girl through all the cozy pleasures of a rainy day like puddles, a raincoat and hat, soaking in a nice warm tub, cocoa with marshmallows... all with bright, beautiful illustrations, and a counting lesson to boot! I've always loved and appreciated the coziness of rainy days, and with this perfect book, I'll be able to share that feeling with my children. I can't wait!

Book Description

It was one hell of an inheritance for former Chicago reporter Tom Coleman: a broken-down pickup truck, ramshackle campground, a canoe livery—and one pot-smoking, barely working employee he doesn’t need, doesn’t want, and can’t afford. But the truth is, after losing a child and a marriage, Tom doesn’t really care. And life is nice and quiet in the middle of nowhere. Until a drug lab blows up near his property—putting Tom in contact with the woman he once loved, a small-town cop with a chip on his shoulder, and a powerful local who doesn’t want him poking his nose where it doesn’t belong. Tom doesn’t want to get involved in the first place. But in the hardscrabble Nebraska Sandhills, storms gather suddenly and bad blood runs deep. Now a quiet summer on the river is turning into a dangerous season of grudges, betrayal, and violent reckoning—and it’s already too late to find shelter...

4 out of 5 stars Great rural novel.......2006-10-05

This is the first novel by Mr. Doolittle I've read -- an impressive,
first-rate read. His characterization (including a romance) and
setting (rural Nebraska) are dead on. The title concerns an
ex-reporter from Chicago returning home to run his late
grandfather's canoe/outdoor expedition camp. Our hero runs into
local nasties including a vicious deputy sheriff. The pacing is
smart and the dialogue is seamless. The narrative stays on
course and doesn't drift. IMO, one of the best books I've read
this year.

3 out of 5 stars Best Mystery Set in Western Nebraska of 2006!!!!! so far.......2006-09-27

An OK read (I'm a hard grader). I liked the setting and the interplay of the local law enforcement types stuck in the middle of nowhere. You are not going to particularly like the "hero" but he has his moments. Toward the end the DEA comes in with enough resources to catch Pablo Escobar not to mention a Nebraska meth gang. I read it on a business trip to a third world country with few entertainment options. It was fine in that context and to be fair, fine as what I call "junk" reading. However, when I finished I didn't want to run out and get the author's other efforts (if any).

3 out of 5 stars Great Writing in Search of a Compelling Story.......2006-05-15

"Rain Dogs" is a difficult novel to review. On the book's back cover, author Sean Doolittle is described as "a young writer with serious chops". And for sure, this is a well-written drama with all the right ingredients - finely drawn characters and a rich rural western-Nebraska setting pulled together with believable dialogue and confident prose. This is the story of Tom Coleman, a down-on-his-luck big city (Chicago) journalist summoned back to Nebraska's sand hills to claim his inheritance - a smalltime camp that caters to the summertime rafting and canoeing trade along the scenic Niobrara River. With a broken down pickup truck and the burned out camp-hand, Duane, the camp is the perfect escape for a man coming off a difficult divorce and the death of his young daughter. The explosion of a nearby fishing camp injures a trio of local teens and sets off rumors of meth labs and drug rings, and soon Coleman is in the center of a mild storm of local politics, cops with attitudes, and neighbors with memories.

The problem is that despite the finely written paragraphs and well-rendered cast, the story never really resonated with me. Coleman surely had enough sorrow in his life to evoke pity, but the ever-present flask, his blinding hangovers, and a generally depressing disposition made it tough to ever really be rooting for him. And while the plot held my interest, it was always just a sentence or two away from being just plain boring.

Nonetheless, Doolittle is indeed a writer with "serious chops", and while this was my first Doolittle book, "Rain Dogs" promises enough to make me want to give "Dirt" or "Burn" a try.

4 out of 5 stars Realistic Characters.......2006-04-21

Don't read this book for the mystery, it is not very good, but that doesn't matter. This book is terrific for the characters.

The characters in the book are realistic. From the depressed main character who has quit his big city reporter job to run his late grandfather's canoe and camping gropund, to the local sheriff and deputies to the punk kids messing with drugs, the personalities all run true.

The reporter returns to his father's hometown and gets mixed up in drug deals when he would rather drink himself into oblivion over the loss of his daughter. There is no heroism here nor good feeling endings, just realism.

The writing is good. Mr. Doolittle has a stark and economical style that matches the tone of the book and keeps it moving. The plot leaves something to be desired, but it is more a vehicle to showcase the personalities and tribulations of the characters than the be all of the book.

As depressing as all this sounds - drinking, depression, etc., the book is not tear-jerker. It is the account of people, men and women, working through life's vicissitudes. Some do it successfully, others do not. Highly recommended. I will go on to other books by Mr. Doolittle.

5 out of 5 stars A book a can't leave home........2006-04-21

I am a mother of three young children with little time to read. I started reading this book and I took it everywhere with so I could sneak a few minutes to read. I was addicted. The story is written casual and I could picture the people and places in my mind. I great read for people that like a good story and a good suspense. I didn't think Doolittle could beat his novel Dirt but he may have with this one.

My son and I both love Kipper. The great thing about Kipper books is that you can get Kipper stories for any age child. The Little Kippers are short books, perfect for a 1.5 - 3 year old. Of course, the art work and the stories are appealing and sweet. That's true of everything Mick Inkpen has published.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for all.......2003-07-28

My daughter who is two and a half years old keeping this book by her bed and we have to read it at least once before she goes to bed. It is a good book that allows you to have fun with your kid (making puddle sounds, rain dances as long as you can imagine you will not be bored)

3 out of 5 stars Nice short story.......2001-05-30

This is a fairly simple book that my 3 year old likes, but my 5 year old finds a little too simple. It does have cute illustrations and would be a good rainy day book.

4 out of 5 stars Kipper is a hit.......2001-03-29

My 2-1/2 year old twins really love Kipper. It began with the TV shows (which they adore and beg for EVERY NIGHT) but they love the Kipper books too. Gentle characters and appealing themes. They like this one because it's been a rainy winter in San Francisco and they can relate to the umbrella and rain. They are fascinated with themes of WET v. DRY so this book helps with those notions. I also think the girls enjoy this book because of the charming non-busy pictures, and the simple themes that they can understand. Kipper is great!

5 out of 5 stars Splosh.......2001-01-02

If your child enjoys watching Kipper on tv they will love the liitle kipper books. Especially Splosh! It is a sound effects book about the rain. And everytime in the book we get to the part where the rain drips drips drips off the hedgehogs nose and than the hedgehog says Ah-Ah-Ah-Tishoo, my two year old son laughs everytime. You will love them all.

What makes your pet howl, yow,l and meow? Why do cats see so well in the dark? The newest entry in Lark’s favorably reviewed science series for children has the answers in a fun, fully-illustrated collection of activities that teach youngsters all about their family pets. And best of all, kids carry out the experiments with the help of the animals themselves. It’s like a game of “monkey see, monkey do” when youngsters imitate the variety of ways pets move by trying to slither, hop, and scamper. They’ll study the animal’s body language and try to understand what it’s “saying,” and test the buoyancy, strength, and water resistance of different types of hair and feathers. From dogs to fish, there's a wild world to discover.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Cow book!.......2006-11-30

This is one of our favorite Cow books. Much like "Cow Finds a Friend", it deals with judging people, preconcieved ideas, etc... I really liked the message in this story. Cow thinks the Dog is just a stupid dog who barks for no reason, and then the dog ends up saving Cow, and the dog explains why he barks--it's his place on the farm, etc... I love that Todd Aaron Smith puts these great ideas and topics in such an easy way for me to get to my kids.

5 out of 5 stars Great series, great pictures..........2004-09-21

We just found this series at the library and my 2 boys (4 & 3) absolutely love it! We love the wording because it has enough explanation to engage young children but not too much that they lose interest. The pictures are also great and nicely drawn.

As a side note, I don't know where they got the book description, but dog does not alert farmer to pull cow out of the mud. Dog pulls Cow out of the mud all by himself! My boys love the picture of dog tugging hard (and looking very mean) to pull cow out of the mud.
