Book Description

Annie Proulx has written some of the most original and brilliant short stories in contemporary literature, and for many readers and reviewers, "Brokeback Mountain" is her masterpiece.

Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranch hands, come together when they're working as sheepherder and camp tender one summer on a range above the tree line. At first, sharing an isolated tent, the attraction is casual, inevitable, but something deeper catches them that summer.

Both men work hard, marry, and have kids because that's what cowboys do. But over the course of many years and frequent separations this relationship becomes the most important thing in their lives, and they do anything they can to preserve it.

The New Yorker won the National Magazine Award for Fiction for its publication of "Brokeback Mountain," and the story was included in Prize Stories 1998: The O. Henry Awards. In gorgeous and haunting prose, Proulx limns the difficult, dangerous affair between two cowboys that survives everything but the world's violent intolerance.

5 out of 5 stars It's a story of love that can never be... not sex........2007-08-25

It doesn't matter if you're straight or gay... this is a story of love that can never be. If anyone has every been in a relationship that just can't happen, this story will hit a nerve.
**SPOILER ALERT**
The sex part of Brokeback Mountain is so minimal, it's not even really an issue. So get over that.
**END OF SPOILER ALERT**
The story tugs on the heartstrings on those who can understand what it's like to be in relationships that aren't working, but they're stuck... and when you meet someone or you're wanting to be with someone, yet it's just not possible. It truly shows how two people, over the course of twenty years, can honestly care and love each other. It reaffirms that love knows no distance, boundaries, number of years, or gender or sexual orientations. Love is just purely that... Love.
Brokeback Mountain is exactly what our world needed, at at time, where understanding and compassion for one another is often disregarded.

5 out of 5 stars As beautiful as it gets.......2007-07-20

Brokeback Mountain is a poem hidden away under beautiful prose. It is a short story, about 55 pages, yet it is profoundly heartwarming, with a subtle flow of true emotions and comes across as a refreshing, cool, light rain showering on your heart but comes back to haunt you and touches your soul in the deepest way.

I had seen the movie last year. It was kind of slow, but the beauty of the story was uniquely brilliant. So when I saw the book at the library I instantly grabbed it and read it within a couple of hours. It is all about 2 guys, Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, coming to know each other while herding sheep on Brokeback mountain. It is the sad story of their difficult lives, separate yet entwined, and your heart reaches out to them. It is a remarkably enchanting story of forbidden love and longing.

The prose is astoundingly elegant and beautiful. Annie Proulx, critically acclaimed author and Pulitzer prize winner, writes as if painting a beautiful picture. The story flows like a serene river - quiet, beautiful, calm and exceedingly sure of itself. See a couple of excerpts to get a taste of her eloquent prose-

"They stood that way for a long time in front of the fire, its burning tossing ruddy chunks of light, the shadow of their bodies a single column against the rock. The minutes ticked by from the round watch in Ennis's pocket, from the sticks in the fire settling into coals. Stars bit through the wavy heat layers above the fire. Ennis's breath came slow and quiet, he hummed, rocked a little in the sparklight and Jack leaned against the steady heartbeat, the vibrations of the humming like faint electricity and, standing, he fell into sleep that was not sleep but something else drowsy and tranced until Ennis, dredging up a rusty but still usable phrase from the childhood time before his mother died, said, "Time to hit the hay, cowboy. I got a go"."

"Without getting up he threw deadwood on the fire, the sparks flying up with their truths and lies, a few hot points of fire landing on their hands and faces, not for the first time, and they rolled down into the dirt. One thing never changed: the brilliant charge of their infrequent couplings was darkened by the sense of time flying, never enough time, never enough."

... and I never get enough of stories as beautifully told as this. Never enough.

5 stars, if not more.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-06-27

This item took you through the entire life of the book to the screenplay to the movie. It was great reading what the writers said about the project and how it was a labor of love for everyone involved. It was wonderful reading how devoted everyone was to the project. Much how the two main characters were devoted to each other.

5 out of 5 stars Learning to Write Short Story to Screeplay.......2007-02-16

In an effort to check out my approach to writing a book adaption to screenplay, I thought it would be a good exercise to experience how others have done it. After reading the Brokeback Mountain short story, then reading the shooting script, then watching the film, I knew I was right on target. It is invigorating to experience and understand the progression from story to screenplay to film. The book also includes backround information from the short story writer, Annie Proulx and the two screenwriters, Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, which tops off the value of this book. Reading it is a great process, and once you've read the book, you'll appreciate the film even more.

5 out of 5 stars Brokeback - story to screenplay - Absolutely Fabulous!!!.......2007-01-18

This is an excellent addition to anyone's book collection - not only do you receive Annie Proulx's wonderful story, but you can experience Larry McMurtry's and Diana Ossana's sweet, lilting and poignant screenplay. Ennis and Jack jump off the page, fictional characters who have somehow become real, as we are transported with them through the most beautiful twenty years of their star-crossed lives. No, it is not a story about gay cowboys....it is a story about two young men who find love and happiness in an unlikely relationship, and simply don't know how to handle it. The part of this story that always grabs me is that through a simple twist of fate, the entire ending could have been different.

I suggest this book couple with the movie - seeing the screenplay come to life through Heath Ledger's and Jake Gyllenhaal's performances is spell bounding.

It was a fascinating read to see the short story move from Annie's simple prose to screenplay. And the chapters at the end which discuss the story and the filming of this heart-wrenching story is worth the price. I highly recommend it. Thanks for listening.

5 out of 5 stars A Companion Piece That's Well Worth It.......2006-08-26

There has been some time and distance since my first introduction to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. It was shortly before the limited release date of the film on December 9, 2005. I don't even remember what feature film I had gone that day to see, but I remember the preview of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN vividly. As I walked out of the theater, I made it a point to ask if the film would be coming to that particular location. The manager was standing near by and told me that it would not; that when it was released in our area, it would be most likely in special art theatres. It didn't come to my area until sometime in January, 2006. Before it's arrival, I had read Annie Proulx' short story by the same name four times. It was not only in the collection of short stories CLOSE RANGE: WYOMING STORIES but had also been released in a fifty-five page hardback edition on it's own because it was now a major motion picture.

The first time I saw the film, I already understood the loneliness that existed in Ennis Del Mar's and Jack Twist's lives and what made them latch onto each other that summer on Brokeback Mountain. What I didn't know and was not prepared for was how well the screenplay would enhance the story and fill in the gaps that the story hinted at but left the reader only to imagine. Nor could I know that the actors who played Ennis, Jack, Alma, Lureen, Aguirre, Alma Jr., Fayette and L. D. Newsome, Cassie, and Jack's mother and father would flesh out their characters so well that they would become like real people to me, even more real. The film had a life changing effect on me. I had lied to myself for years believing that I didn't desire or need someone to be in love with, not in the way that Ennis and Jack loved each other. I came away knowing that passion like that is worth it even when you lose as Ennis and Jack did. I've lost count of how many times I've read the story and seen the film especially since I own the DVD and it's magic has not left me still.

I bought the book BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN: STORY TO SCREENPLAY because I wanted the story and screenplay in print together for easier comparison. The three essays by Annie Proulx, Larry McMurtry, and Diana Ossana at the end are icing on the cake. The fact that this story became a full length feature is a major miracle and the world is greatly heightened by it.

This is an awesome calendar. A friend of mine got it for me as a gift and I was pleasantly surprised because I love the movie and I didn't realize that "Brokeback Mountain" made a 2007 calendar. The calendar includes 12 beautiful pictures from the movie of Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. There are also smaller pictures on the pages as well. And this is a full, standard size calendar that also includes major holidays and the days of the week. Unlike most other celebrity calendars this one is both functional and great to look at!

5 out of 5 stars "If you can't fix it, you gotta stand it.".......2007-02-27

First published in the New Yorker magazine in 1997, this powerful short story won the National Magazine Award for Fiction and an O. Henry Award. Exploding the stereotype of the cowboy, author Annie Proulx creates a passionate love story between two young ranch hands who believe their love and relationship are unique. Both are nineteen, and neither will entertain the thought that he might be gay ("I'm not no queer...it's a one-shot thing.").

In vibrant prose filled with unusual images of nature, Proulx depicts the intensity of their love, which first begins in a high pasture on Brokeback Mountain, where they tend sheep to protect them from predators, and sleep in a tent at night. From the outset, nineteen-year-old Ennis del Mar is so elated with the company of the equally young Jack Twist that he "felt he could paw the white out of the moon." When their attraction suddenly bursts into passion, they feel themselves "flying in the euphoric, bitter air, looking down on the hawk's back." And when, at the end of the season, they bring the sheep down the mountain, "the mountain boiled with demonic energy," and Ennis "felt he was in a slow-motion, but headlong, irreversible fall."

At the end of the season, they separate, and over the next twenty years they both live as straight men, seeing each other rarely, and keeping their love a secret. Ennis has never forgotten the time when he was nine and his father took him to see the remains of a gay man who was tortured, then beaten to death with a tire iron. His father laughed about this atrocity, regarding it as appropriate punishment for the man's violation of the "western code."

Proulx concentrates on themes and on the intensity of the men's love story, subordinating everything else, including her imagery and character development, to it. The dramatic ending conjures up images from the beginning of the story on Brokeback Mountain and ties all the details together, while the thematic line "If you can't fix it, you gotta stand it," which is first spoken at the story's turning point, is repeated in the conclusion for emphasis. Inexorable forces act on Ennis and Jack throughout the story, some forces originating in nature and some coming from other men--and Ennis and Jack just "gotta stand it." Mary Whipple

4 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2006-09-25

In the very beginning of this book I couldn't get in to it. I was going to put in back on the shelf but I told my self give it a chance and I was glad I did. I really got in to the story. Imagining it all, but sadly I hadn't finished it just yet. I will finish reviewing it when I am done.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and Well-Written.......2006-09-09

I am a teenager. I realize, of course, that by conventional standards my reading of this book may be frowned upon; however, I have read it, and I enjoyed it. With that out of the way, let's begin.

First of all, this story is short; it is more of a novella than a true novel. If my sources are correct, it was originally published as part of of a collection of short stories by the author, and was only released as an individual book only after the movie. Therefore, the briefness of the tale must be forgiven, as Proulx never intended for it to really stand alone.

I enjoy Anne Proulx's style of writing. It's very character-focused, as the previous reviewer mentioned, and yet she doesn't spend paragraphs describing the characters' physical appearances, or--God forbid-- over-analyzing their current emotional state. The prose is simple yet compelling, slightly rough yet beautiful, much like the landscape where the action takes place.

And speaking of action...this book is not all about the sex. Porn lovers, seek ye a different text; you will find few, if any, graphic elements here. The language can be rough, but it's nothing most people in this day and age have not heard. And, if anything, the few shocking elements in the book only help to illustrate the conflict the main characters face. The author, rather than spending valuable pages going on and on about Jack and Ennis' angst [as author Anne Rice is apt to do, however artfully], instead allows the reader to be put in a similar feeling of shocked revelation as the main characters; the action speaks for itself.

This is not a book that depends on the gimmick of "gay love" to be a powerful work. It is, rather, an account of two individuals struggling against their natures and the standards put onto them by society...a struggle which may ultimately lead to both of their destructions.

"Better to have loved and lost than to have not loved at all"? Read Brokeback Mountain. Then decide if it's true.

4 out of 5 stars A story rather than a novel.......2006-07-17

First and foremost, this is a very quick read. As a matter of fact, Cliff Notes versions of books are usually longer than this one is. The screenplay for the movie was based on this, and to make it full length, parts have been added.

There is no part of the story that is not in the movie. If you have already seen the movie, then nothing is surprising here. The scene where Ennis attacks the rowdy people at the fireworks show and the scenes about the beginning of Jack's marriage are not here in the story. That being said, this story is not lessened by not having it.

Whereas the movie had a lot of great shots of the scenery, this book doesn't have that kind of pastoral flair. The focus is on the characters, their reactions, gestures, and speech. I thought this really well done.

This is a good story, but I would not recommend buying it as the size doesn't really warrant the money spent for a book. I would recommend purchasing the screenplay before buying this story.

1 out of 5 stars Overhyped trash posing as literature and art.......2006-06-30

So this is what the world has come to. Sin is out in the open and portrayed as love. It seems like anything that is contraversial will be embraced by liberal America, no matter if there is no substance. Everyone has to have a gimmick and Annie Proulx has found hers to become famous. It would be like writing a book about a child molester who falls in love with a child and call it beautiful art. The child molester who was "born" that way not wanting to quit the child, who was "born" to love adults. I think I will write that story and make it a love story and tell everyone to keep an open mind about love and that you shouldn't be uncomfortable with such a pure love. Or maybe a story about a man and a horse. That would be cool. And I would HAVE TO write it because here in the world today, we have lost control of our ability to CHOOSE, unless it is to choose to have an abortion. Everyone is born a certain way so as to not upset anyone. Everything is relative and everyone is judgmental and everyone is close-minded. That is how the world is beginning to operate. It's a sad, sad day.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2005-10-02

Since picking up this book last week, I have felt absolutely consumed by the story, the characters, and the tragedy with which they were faced. Both characters loved one another so deeply, yet they failed to say so many crucial things to one another. Annie Proulx is an amazingly gifted talent who knows how to, in so few words, illustrate the differences in the needs of her characters. The following excerpt depicts what I am getting at perfectly:
"What Jack remembered and craved in a way he could neither help nor understand was the time that distant summer on Brokeback when Ennis had come up behind him and pulled him close, the silent embrace satisfying some shared and sexless hunger. Later, that dozy embrace solidified in his memory as the single moment of artless, charmed happiness in their separate and difficult lives. Nothing marred it, even the knowledge that Ennis would not then embrace him face to face because he did not want to see nor feel that it was Jack he held. And maybe, he thought, they'd never got much farther than that. Let be, let be."

The most complex and painful challenge for both men was perhaps the lack of true expression. Ennis never really let Jack know how much he longed for, and really did love him. Ennis seems to have had a harder time accepting the fact that he is in love with a man. Jack on the other hand is so willing to drop all he has, to sacrifice and lose everything (even his life) to be with Ennis. They both love each other beyond all logic. Yet they never really seem to say what needs saying, and without even trying - they break each other's hearts. Ennis was never willing to risk it all for a relationship that scared him to death. Jack felt driven to feed sexual appetites abroad and take the few precious moments a year that Ennis would give him. This broke my heart! How many of us struggle with the very same communication issues, but never really fix what needs healing?
This story definately deserves more than 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Short Story with a Long-lasting Effect.......2005-09-16

I read Brokeback Mountain recently won 2 international film festivals. I checked out the web and found the preview of Ang Lee's film...the images, music, and words drove me to find the source material and so I went last night to the local bookstore and found Close Range: Wyoming Stories by Annie Proulx.

Flipping to the last story in the collection, I started reading Brokeback Mountain while leaning against the shelves in the store and once again I was wading through the complex prose, imagery and metaphor of Proulx...I tried, really I did, to get through The Shipping News but I just finally, exhausted, gave in.

Yet, I read on through the first few pages of this surprisingly short short story (they made a movie around 30 pages? was my first thought) and then skimmed a little and got the gist of the story and put it back on the shelf and went home.

Then I started thinking about what I had read and I could not get it out of my mind all night.

On the way to the airport today, I ran back to the bookstore and bought Close Range and reread Brokeback Mountain...and reread it and then went over certain passages, then reread it again. I didn't put it down through two flights (and an extended delay!).

I don't know whether to praise Proulx or curse her...she makes me work too hard as a reader! I feel some of her passages are riddles...she is teasing us to see if we can figure out what she means. The lyric beauty of the text fills my mind with images based on what I interpret but did I interpret the right thing? Did I interpret what I was intended to interpret? Did I see in her words what Proulx saw when she wrote them? Is there such a thing as "face value" when reading this story?

Maybe it is just a story about two lonely cowboys who fall in love amidst the beauty of Wyoming. I hope not.

Perhaps Proulx's greatest gift as a writer is she crafts and weaves words and images so we can each walk away with our own version of Brokeback Mountain and that is all each of us can hope to gain in reading it. As I read Proulx's words, I can smell the scent of pine in the autumn wind, see the aspen's golden hues shimmering in the lengthening shadows, feel the chill of approaching winter, and am achingly moved by the longing, passion, and pain of the two main characters.

Ennis and Jack stand for all of us...we each have our own Brokeback Mountain where dreams and hopes are built, passions are explored, secrets are hidden, and truths are humbling, overwhelming and, at times, elusive in their revelation.

Thank you Annie...you gave me much to think and reflect on.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Wait For The Movie!.......2005-09-12

I'd heard about this story for a long time, and when I finally did read it, I was amazed. Like all gifted writers, Proulx creates a distinct language for this story, full of slang, twang, and euphemisms, which in and of itself is as exciting as the tragic love story. Over twenty years are covered in this tale, and the passage of time starts to pull at you, as you realize just how infrequently the two of them get to see each other. The story is constructed to illustrate the impossibility of some same-sex relationships, and in that, I think Proulx has done a better job than many gay writers. Imagining Heath Ledger as Enis didn't hurt, either.

5 out of 5 stars "You Just Shot My Airplane Out A The Sky".......2005-09-08

In 1963 Jack Twist, with buckteeth "not pronounced enough to let him eat popcorn out of the neck of a jug, but noticeable," and Ennis del Mar, "scruffy and a little cave-chested," herd sheep for the summer on Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming country. Both men are under twenty, both high school dropouts, both "rough-mannered, rough-spoken, inured to the stoic life." These men fall hopelessly in love that summer and their lives are forever changed. Pulitzer prize winning author Annie Proulx in language as understated as Dante's ("that day they read no further") describes their first coupling: "in a little while they deepened their intimacy considerably."

Their dilemma, which provides the central conflict of this perfect story, is whether to leave wives and children and live together in fictional Wyoming-- forty years before the true life tragedy of Matthew Shepherd-- or to seek each other out in secret when they have the time over the passing years. They are well aware of the inherent danger of expressing their love before the world. Ennis: "We do that in the wrong place we'll be dead. There's no reins on this one. It scares the p--- out of me." Jack: "It don't happen in Wyomin [sic] and if it does I don't know what they do, maybe go to Denver. . . come on, Ennis, you just shot my airplane out a the sky -- give me somethin a go on."

I have read this story three times now and with each new reading pick up nuances I missed previously. Ms. Proulx has created here two characters who will tear your heart out; you remember them long after you finish reading. Ms. Proulx is quite a marvelous story-teller, writing about the redeeming power of love and the comfort of memory. Her language is as tough and beautiful as the Wyoming country. Near the end of her story, there is a poignant scene where Ennis finds his old shirt that Jack had stolen hanging inside one of Jack's own: "He pressed his face into the fabric and breathed in slowly through his mouth and nose, hoping for the faintest smoke and mountain sage and salty sweet stink of Jack but there was no real scent, only the memory of it, the imagined power of Brokeback Mountain of which nothing was left but what he held in his hands."

This story deserves more than five stars.

1 out of 5 stars It was like reading from a drunk persons perspective..........2005-06-13

I admit that cowboys are not usually characters I take interest in. However, from the synopsis, I went into this book with high expectations.

Skeletal run down-two young cowboys meet on a ranch in Utah in the 60s. Life is hard and lonely on the mountain they herd sheep on. They find solace in eachother, despite the fatal repercussions of homosexuality at the time.

My biggest issue with the story is the lack of depth. Physical surroundings, character development and interaction...all are sketchy and rushed at best.

I wouldn't recomend this book to anyone.

I enjoyed this trivia book immensely...even me who is an ardent fan of the movie and saw it 7 times in the theatre...had trouble with some of the trivia...but once you glance through it, it makes you want to watch the movie again...and believe me, it takes you back to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN...unbelievable....and enjoyable....

5 out of 5 stars I Can't Quit Jack & Ennis!.......2007-09-08

Just received my copy of this little book, a sweet homage to a film that changed my life forever! This was actually a birthday gift from a friend who knew how much I loved the film. Since I've marked some of the answers to the questions in my book, I guess I'll have to order another copy! If you are a fan of the amazing, unforgettable film, then this is the perfect book to add to your collection!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed .......2007-02-23

91 pages and more than 5 of those (double sided) are totally blank. Most of the rest of the book is multiple choice questions and there are four of those to a page. It has very large type to take up a lot of space where there could have been some information. It's easy to see that it's for pre-teens. The short story is a work of art, the screenplay is a work of art, and the movie is Ang Lee's work of art. This doesn't fall into that category at all. It's a pop quiz to see if you paid attention while watching the movie. As someone who liked the film I think this book is offending, especially since they actually charge for it. I have collected some "Brokeback Mountain" memorabilia and was hoping this would be a nice addition. I couldn't believe how bad this thing was and sent it back. Didn't waste any time doing it either.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST For Musician BBM Fans.......2006-07-15

This is such a beautiful booklet of music, I could just stare at it for hours. Other than it's elegant look, however, it also holds the music to any Brokeback lover's most cherished songs (A Love That Will Never Grow Old, The Wings--yes it includes the Wings) I even found myself excited about the songs that weren't really my favorite from the soundtrack (He Was A Friend of Mine)

I do admit I'm reveiwing this a little early, I haven't mastered all the songs yet to know if the arrangements are good or not, but I have learned to play The Wings and it's perfect. You have no idea how exciting it is to play such an epic piece of music! And it's actually fairly easy. I promise you this will be one of your most coveted Brokeback extras--maybe even before your 7 movie stubs, dvd, soundtrack, story, etc. As long as you or a friend of yours is musically inclined, you'll have so much fun listening to your secret favorite songs (It's So Easy, King of the Road) in real life even more than on the screen.

    5 out of 5 stars A Story Within A Story..........2006-07-10

So this is what the world has come to... Short stories that are so well crafted that they can take you where you have never been with just a few dozen pages. The story of the relationship that can never be has been told before. In this book that story sits inside another. It is the tragic tale of someone starting a family and then discovering that their true love is on the outside. That diffucult situation becomes impossible when that love is for someone of the same sex. Here in the United States, it is common for some to condemn what they cannot get their mind around. Those with a narrow view spout insults and swing tire irons. This is a story of impossible love and its tragic consequences. Annie Proulx wrote a marvelous story. It is a good, even great day when a writer can challenge us to reach beyond the hyperbole and see the story from a new perspective.
