Book Description
Three devious prisoners vow murderous revenge.
Now the second is free.
With her stalker captured, antiques dealer Amanda Crosby can finally sleep at night. Having worked hard to put the nightmare behind her, Amanda has vowed to never be a victim again. But when her business partner, Derek England, is found with a bullet through the back of his head just hours after she left an incriminating message on his voice mail, Amanda finds herself in danger of becoming a victim of another sort.
All the evidence points to Amanda as Derek’s killer, and Chief of Police Sean Mercer is building the case against her. But when another of her colleagues is found brutally murdered, it’s obvious that someone other than Amanda is behind the killings. Suddenly Amanda is a target once again, as a diabolical killer circles ever closer—and the only thing that stands between her and becoming the third and final victim is the man who had tried to put her behind bars. . . .

The Start of a Beautiful Relationship.......2007-06-23
Dead CertainThis was the first Mariah Stewart book I had purchased. The cover art drew me to the book, but the content kept me coming back for more. I found my self reading it late into the wee hours of the night, and I even snuck in a few pages to read at work. At the end I found that it was part of a series and not even the first book! I had to find the others.
Engaging enough, but not super.......2007-04-30
"Dead Certain" is the second in the "Dead" series by Mariah Stewart ("Dead Wrong" being the first). It's certainly helpful if you read the books in order to get the full background and understand the larger context, but there is a complete story in each book. I would probably more technically rate this 3 and a half stars, rather than 4, but the series is really good, so I just recommend you read them all!
The premise for the series is taken from the old "Strangers on a Train" movie, with three prisoners locked in a room together, sharing murder lists, answering the question, "What if you could do anything - anything at all - and not get caught?" So, the three each share a list of three people they'd kill if they could, and then they swap lists, each taking another's list. All of this, of course, is hypothetical... except in "Dead Wrong" (first in the series) the first of the three prisoners to be released, Curtis Channing, set out to kill the three people on one of the other's list. Now, that man, Vince Giordano, has been released from prison, his sentence overturned based on a technicality. He's determined to follow through on what Channing started, taking care of the list of the third man, Archer Lowell.
I like Mariah Stewart's books because I think she does a good job balancing the romance with the suspense thriller aspect of her stories. This is not hard core suspense thriller, but neither is the crime aspect cheap window dressing on some romance where the two leads spend more time having sex than anything else.
Amanda Crosby is a high-end antiques dealer (sister of Evan Crosby who makes appearances in both this book and "Dead Wrong" and gets his own story in "Dead End"), whose best friend and partner has just been murdered. New Chief of Police Sean Mercer wants to prove himself and has to consider Amanda his prime suspect at the outset of the investigation. I have to say, whenever I read a story in which the romance is between a cop and someone who's been a suspect at some point during the investigation, I feel the suspension of belief is more than normal. I just have a hard time believing this is credible. Especially since I felt like their relationship moved along pretty quickly, given they had just met, though the 'romance' didn't start until after the evidence cleared her. So, there is this obstacle to surmount. As well, Sean seems amazingly functional given the family history that is revealed during the course of the story - another suspension of belief for me. His character by itself seemed a little flat to me - only in his interaction with Amanda was he really appealing. Amanda is well developed, however, and very likeable. Archer Lowell had stalked and attacked her in the past - that's why he's in prison - and she survived that and has made herself into a stronger woman. She's a strong woman, but not one of those "I'll do anything stupid just to prove I'm an independent woman".
All of that said, characters together are engaging enough, and that worked well for the story. I enjoy the `supporting' characters, too, and this is a benefit to the whole series as Stewart is able to develop these characters more thoroughly. By the time they get their `own' stories, you really feel like you know them well. The bad guy in this story, Vince Giordano, was interesting - a bit of a caricature, though. There was not too much said about what makes him tick, other than his abuse and murder of his wife and two children in the past. He felt a bit `cookie-cutter' bad guy to me - evil for the sake of evil.
Overall, I'd say the characters are more engaging in "Dead Certain" than in "Dead Wrong" (fewer rough edges), but perhaps not as realistic. But, it's still a good read, and I would recommend the book to any fans of light suspense thriller, or romance fans looking for something with a little more depth to it.
Pretty good romantic suspense.......2007-01-29
Normally I don't like romantic suspense but this was pretty good. I give it 3.5 stars. Not too Mills & Boon. A nice balance of romantic backstory when Amanda meets the Chief of Police.
Amanda thinks she's safe now. Her stalker is in jail, she's become a spokesperson helping other men and women recognise potential stalkers and feels like she has got her life together. Then her business partner dies and the Chief of Police has her in his sights for his murder.
When her good friend and fellow shopkeeper dies, the Chief of Police Sean Mercer suspects that Amanda might be the target. But who could it be?
It's not really a mystery. The first chapter tells you who is committing the murders. Instead the story revolves around the developing attracting between Amanda and Sean, as well as seeding the plot for the next story in the instalment.
When all is said and done it's a well written romantic thriller but it won't have you on the edge of your seat.
#2 FINISHED...........2005-07-30
Okay, I've read #1>Dead Wrong, and finished #2>Dead Certain. Story still reads a little slower than my usual mystery/suspense novels (that's why only 3 stars), but the story *is* rather unique and it kept my attention.
A tip: When I have lots of different characters in a book, I use a large index card as a bookmark and jot down pg#, character's name, and something about them on it. >Hey, it's hard remembering who everybody is! And throughout these three books in the series, there are LOTS of folks!
I've just finished #3>Dead Even, if you're interested in my last review on this series.....?
Outstanding.......2005-01-23
SUMMARY: Her stalker/assailant now safely in jail, antiquities-expert Amanda Crosby has put her life back together and, in the process, has discovered an independence heretofore unknown: she has earned her black belt in tae kwon do, publicly speaks about the necessity of stalker awareness, and even has a column in the local newspaper. As her life is coming together, her business partner and best friend, Derek England, makes a move that could potentially destroy their antiques shop. Angry and frustrated, Amanda makes some innocuous threats...and is later horrified when they come true. Amanda find herself the primary suspect, but as the bodies continue to drop, it becomes apparent that Amanda herself is the real target.
WHY YOU'LL LIKE IT: Amanda Crosby is the most well-rounded and believable heroine of Stewart's trilogy. She's smart, independent, and decisive, but also vulnerable and thoughtful. Chief Sean Mercer is an admirable love interest, with his own tragic past. Two people alone in the world, finding each other in a time of great peril...trite, but extremely effective. Villainous Vince Giordano is also the most frightening criminal of this trilogy in that there is no real etiology ascribed to his evil; he just is evil.
WHY YOU WON'T: Honestly, I can't think of any real reason why you won't enjoy this novel, assuming you enjoy this genre. The action sequences are able, as are the romance sequences. The characters are well-written and enjoyable. The conclusion is very satisfactory.
BOTTOM LINE: The second and best installment in Stewart's trilogy. Highly recommended.

Book Description
When identical twins working for a Las Vegas casino are found murdered, FBI agent Roland Ingram's investigation reveals that both women were patients in a clinical trial involving nanotech-powered drug delivery. Because of her experience in pharmaceutical development, Dr. Dani Hunter, a brilliant but intense postdoctoral fellow with a dark past, becomes Ingram's reluctant partner.
Demonic in form, the lure of the weapons potential of this same nanotechnology is far too great for rival governments to resist. It attracts a Saudi sheik and the U.S. Defense Department, both determined to acquire the power for unnervingly similar purposes. As the global struggle for control begins, a phantom killer from San Francisco's past claims responsibility for the murders, sending the city into turmoil days before the Democratic Convention is to begin. A sensational murder and a startling realization lead to a race to prevent the technology, and whoever controls it, from creating human cybernauts programmed to kill.
Selective genetic targeting-the targeting of a race or an individual by its unique genetic pattern, and, ultimately, the extinction of a race by sterilization-is the end game for those bent on the destruction of civilization. The game begins here.

Hi-tech and mystery combined!.......2006-09-28
When identical twin, casino employees are found murdered, FBI agent Roland Ingram finds that both women were part of a medical trial for diabetics involving nanotechnology. To help him understand this new technology, Roland recruits Dr. Dani Hunter, a postdoctoral fellow in pharmaceutical development, as his temporary partner.
Hidden agendas abound as the casino tries to hide some shady dealings and a man inside the drug trials uses his position to double deal with the Department of Defense and a foreign power, each with visions of a valuable bio-weapon.
As more deaths are linked with the trial, and a serial killer from the past takes responsibility, the investigation goes in multiple directions looking for the killer.
Herst, despite being a research scientist himself, manages very nicely to mix his technical descriptions with translations in plain English as Dani explains complex information to Roland.
I had a few loose ends still bothering me at the end of the book and a few too many conspiracies were going on to keep them all straight, but I really enjoyed this look into the world of high tech biological research and intrigue.
Armchair Interviews says: Hi-tech and mystery combined.

Product Description
In this ambitious work of political narrative, Robert Draper takes us inside the Bush White House and delivers an intimate portrait of a tumultuous decade and a beleaguered administration. Virtually every page of this book crackles with scenes, anecdotes, and dialogue that will surprise even long-time observers of George W. Bush.
With unprecedented access to all the key figures of this administration from six one-on-one sessions with the president, to Laura Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleeza Rice, Karl Rove, and perhaps 200 other players, some well-known, some not Draper has achieved what no other journalist or contemporary historian has done thus far: he has told the story of the Bush White House from the inside, with a special emphasis on how the very personality of this strong-willed president has affected the outcome of events.
Bush loyalists and the growing number of Bush detractors will all find much to savor in this riveting political page-turner. We begin with a revealing lunch at the White House where a testy, hot dog-chomping president finally unburdens himself to the inquisitive reporter, a fellow Texan who well understands the manly argot that courses through this administration.
We revisit the primaries of election-year 2000, in which the character of the candidate and indeed the future of the Republican Party were forged in the scalding South Carolina battle with Senator John McCain. We proceed forward to witness intimately the confusion and the eloquence that followed the September 11 attacks, then the feckless attempts to provide electricity to a darkened Baghdad, the high- and lowlights of the 2004 re-election bid, the startling and fruitless attempt to spend capital by overhauling the Social Security system, the inept response to Katrina, the downward spiraling and increasingly divisive war in Iraq.
Though the headlines may be familiar, the details, the utterly inside account of how events transpired will come as fresh reportage to even the most devoted followers of mainstream media coverage. In this most press-wary of administrations, Robert Draper has accomplished a small miracle: He has knocked on all on the right doors, and thus become the first author to tell a personality-driven history of the Bush years. In so doing, he allows us to witness in complete granularity the personal force of a president determined to achieve big things, who remained an optimist in the face of a sometimes harsh unpopularity, who confronted the history of his time with what can surely be described as dead certainty.
Customer Reviews:
Myopic Manichaean Monomania.......2007-10-08
Although Robert Draper was invited inside the Bush White House to write this "authorized biography" of Bush 43, Draper stays surprisingly even-handed, neither lionizing the President (as many adoring biographers do to their subjects) nor demeaning him (as is currently in vogue).
Depending on one's outlook, Bush does or does not do that himself. Draper shows us a man who is surprisingly thoughtful about his place in the world, but is so absolutely assured of the rightness of his positions that he brooks no argument from his advisers, tolerates no dissent, and never reconsiders his decisions. Charming and eloquent toward his guest one moment, he "bellows" rudely at the White House kitchen staff to bring him ice cream the next. Admitting that American deaths in Iraq pain him, he nonetheless spends considerable energy in maintaining his Iraqi adventure.
He is "The Commander Guy" and "The Decider" in a very real sense, running his Administration on a strictly hierarchical basis, with himself at the unquestioned top. Even while studiously avoiding polemic, Draper can't drape Dubya enough on these pages to hide the fact that Bush sees himself as a moral crusader---with no one but himself deciding what's moral. This Manichaean worldview has led to some of the worst excesses and lapses in judgement in American Presidential history; however, the President seems barely troubled. Bush is not simpleminded, but he is simplistic, and sees all issues and all people in terms of absolutes, demonstrating a dangerous inflexibility, especially for a man in power who craves power. His "Wanted: Dead or Alive," "You are either with us or you are against us," and "I just don't believe it," combined with his narrow, puritanical view of science and society and his propensity to place loyalty above competence affect the entire planet.
Proven not unintelligent on these pages, Bush's famous mangling of the English language seems almost studied. The slanging and mangling is meant to be seen as an indication of his hail-fellow-well-met persona, exuding harmlessness and folksiness. This President wants people to see him as the "Aw Shucks, Folks" President who stands firm in the face of doubt, very much the Texas cowboy he really isn't. In fact, he craves power for power's sake.
It's clear that Draper likes the man---George W. Bush, qua George W. Bush is a likeable, witty fellow. But George W. Bush qua President comes across as a darker spirit, not only firm but inflexible, a man who has not grown much in the Presidency. Given virtually unlimited discretion in the aftermath of 9/11, Bush took it and has used it myopically to advance his own agendas. A pathological optimist, Bush seems bemused by the fact that people are concerned about the economy, that New Orleans hasn't fixed itself in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and that anyone questions his good intentions.
Draper doesn't delve---or wasn't allowed to delve---into many of the Administration's most controversial decisions. Tellingly though, Bush's decision to sit and read MY PET GOAT while he knew the country was under attack on September 11, 2001 is not whitewashed away. Draper unflinchingly presents us with a man who, at that moment, was stunned, and for the moment, immobilized by uncertainty. And while Draper doesn't necessarily see Bush's mute reaction as the fulcrum of his Presidency, in retrospect it was: The man has never given himself up to uncertainty since.
Unable to discern between "meum" and "tuum," Bush has only a limited monochromatic view of the world and a limited (and one might say, ultimately) unrealistic view of what the United States can do, and what the rational limits of power are. In the end, and in despite of Draper's scrupulous fairness, George W. Bush comes across not only as "dead certain" but as an immutably fixed point on the face of a rapidly-changing planet.
A refreshing Biography, not Bush Bashing!.......2007-10-06
This is a great read as well as an informative biography. By portraying significant moments in Bush's political career with direct quotes and vignettes, Draper paints a full portrait of a historical figure so lacking in personal insight as to maintain belief in ideals while blind to reality. This is not "Bush-bashing" as much as a forensic psychological examination of all that went wrong.
Certainly dead wrong.......2007-10-06
Some insight into how this flawed loser was encouraged to think he could be a great leader instead of the family black sheep. What a disaster for the country and the world
My Dad loves it!.......2007-10-06
My Dad loves President Bush but does'nt read books very often. When he got it he picked it up and hasn't put it down yet. He really likes it a lot and I'm glad I bought it for him. I will probably read it when he's finished with it.
The Failed Bush Presidency: A Product of a Complacent Democracy .......2007-10-06
I agree with many of the reviews that Draper creates an insightful picture of the President with out "taking ideaological sides" per se. Throughout reading Dead Certain, I could not help but think how the nation for so long has allowed the President to seriously harm our country and devastate so many lives. Democrats, too, have been enablers throughout his 8 year term. I find it ironic that Clinton was impeached for lying under oath about his trysts with Monica Lewinsky, and was subject to strict scrutiny by both the media and the Republicans. Yet Bush has not been held truly accountable and has been given essentially a free reign--even though it has been documented that strong exxagerations were used by the Bush Administration to convince the American people that Iraq was a necessary war, even making links to 9/11 when there were none. What I extrapolate from the book is that Bush's steadfastness or resolve, admired by many, comes from having a limited, almost simplistic view of the world, which has lead to devastating errors since the world is extremely complex. Many have likened Iraq to the Vietnam War. However, there is a signifigant distinction. Unlike Vietnam, there is no draft. Because only a small percentage of the American population are directly affected, the rest of the population can stay relatively disconnected. During the Vietnam era, there were massive ralles to end the war. Even though an overwhelming majority of American are now against the war, there is still a sense that America is disconnected--escaping to consumerism to help heal its insecurities and anxieties rather than delving into substantive analysis so we can right the wrongs of the past. I recently watched an HBO special, Alive Day Memories, where James Gandolfini interviewed injured soldiers who had served in Iraq, men and womern who were once vibrant and healthy, and who are now forever scarred by their experiences in Iraq. Ken Burns, who produced a comprehensive documentary on World War II, remarked in an interview how amazing it is that young soldiers are willing to go to battle and risk their lives in both necessary and unnecessary wars, demonstrating the allegience they have for their country. This country was built on a foundation of checks and balances, and on the ideals of an active and involved democracy. We need to return to such principles in order to create a more hopeful future for more of America, rather than for just a privileged few. Anyways, I highly recommend the book.

Customer Reviews:
Chicken & Rice.......2001-12-07
This was my first time ever reading a Kate Millholland book. I had a really hard time getting started in this book. I thought it would be a scary story by looking at the front cover, but as it turned out it really wasn't. They say not to judge the books by their front cover, I admit that is what I did on this book. The book took a long time for me to actually get into it and I didn't realize it was about a lawyer. That didn't help, because I am not usually not interested in lawyers. I was dreding on the fact that the book looked long and felt long after only read 4-5 chapters. Then there was a whole turing point in about half way through. I couldn't ever set the book down, because I always wanted to know what happened next. It ended to be a really interesting and likeable story.
Well-written, But Seriously Flawed.......2000-07-25
Has anyone else noticed that this book has virtually no ending? On one page our heroine is in dire peril, and the chapter concludes with a cliffhanger. On the next page, everything is fine, and the book ends about fifty words later with no explanation. I couldn't believe it. I read the last two pages a half dozen times hoping I'd missed something. I even checked the page numbers to see if some of them had been accidently omitted. What a disappointment! The plot was reasonably interesting, although Kate's vast wealth with her Judith Lieber bags and one-of-a-kind furniture was tiresome, but the ending...probably the worst I've ever read in a mystery.
Not the best entry in the Kate Milholland series.......2000-06-24
I have read all the books in the Kate Milholland series, and the problems in this book is the same as the one that plague other books in the series. Because the main character is intriguing, and Gini Hartzmark maintains Kate's mystique, I have continued to read the books in this series. However, other characters are seriously underdeveloped. For example, someone very close to Kate dies midway through the book, but a newcomer to the series will merely see it as a plot device. Another problem is that Hartzmark spends too much time detailing the financial transactions of the cases she is working on, which ultimately has nothing to do with the mystery itself, a series of unexplained deaths at Prescott Memorial Hospital, which itself is about to be sold to an HMO. Kate, a corporate lawyer, is working on an internet buyout, which Hartzmark spends a lot of time explaining. However, the only connection between it and the mystery is that Kate's client has a heart attack and ends up at Prescott Memorial. Thankfully, Kate has stopped waffling between lovers and has finally chosen one. However, his character too, is underdeveloped and Hartzmark doesn't show why the two are attracted to each other. Kate Milholland has the makings of being a top tier mystery character, up there with Kay Scarpetta and Kinsey Milhone. Hartzmark should focus more on her characters and a tighter plot and plausible endings for her mysteries rather than getting bogged down in financial and business details.
First Time with Kate.......2000-03-20
This was my first time reading a Kate Millholland novel. I am an avid mystery/courtroom drama fan and was very pleased with this book. I find the Kate Millholland character intelligent, funny and quite stubborn (a quality I admire.) All the characters are well developed, the plot is intriguing and keeps the book moving along at a nice pace. The humorous observations of Kate Millholland give the book a light-hearted feel and make it an easy read. I enjoyed it enough to order other books from this series.
Another gripping instalment in Kate's life.......2000-02-23
I enjoyed every one of Gini Hartzmark's books. I love her characters and I love the standard of her writing. Her story lines are credible and the plots are well thought out. I do envy Kate's wardrobe. I look forward to the next book in this series.
