Sookie Stackhouse is a cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana, but she keeps to herself and doesn't date much because of her "disability" to read minds. When she meets Bill, Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. He's the type of guy she's waited for all of her life, but he has a disability, too--he's a vampire with a bad reputation. 4 out of 5 stars Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris.......2007-09-25

I went into this novel with very low expectations, and as such, it exceeded them. It isn't Pulitzer Prize winning material; but, it's a fast, fun read.

Ms. Harris is a seasoned mystery writer; but when her more mainstream novels didn't sell as well as she would have liked, she decided to write a more profitable series; namely, one that could be marketed as fantasy and/or horror. She took what she knew and threw in a telepathic waitress, a humanistic vampire and a charmingly modest shape shifter. That may not sound like a recipe for success; but, Harris managed to pull it off - with only a few minor mechanical flaws.

Sookie, in blatant contrast to her genre equivalents - cynical, hardened, magic wielding detectives - is rather quiet and almost painfully naive. Though her voice is mostly entertaining, she sometimes slips into the vocabulary and cadence of a woman Charlaine Harris' age (who will be fifty-seven this year), rather than the twenty-five that she is supposed to be. She also flip-flops between confident virgin by choice and self-doubting sexual outcast. The latter narrative flaw is easier to overlook than the former; but both put a nasty kink into Harris' narrative flow.

The story itself is fairly solid - with all of the genre requirements being met:

supernatural beings - check
death w/subtle gore - check
open ending meant to facilitate a potentially never-ending series - check

Working against it is the fact that it is yet another Louisiana vampire story. I'm beginning to wonder if anyone can resurrect the pre-Anne Rice vampire myths; allowing their undead characters to live anywhere they damned well please. At least Harris isn't writing about New Orleans. I have to give her credit for that.

I will admit, I was sucked in by Charlaine Harris' story. I even missed a few favorite television shows in order to continue reading; but, I'm not sure that I loved it. If you're a fan of the recently inundated dark fantasy detective novels, I would recommend it - but I would also suggest buying it used if at all possible.

2 out of 5 stars Hoping the series gets better.......2007-09-24

I've read various contemporary vampire series and figured I'd give this a try. I suppose I could call it kind of cute at times. But that doesn't seem right for a vampire book. But that's it. I think the cover really says it all. The vampire, Bill, has no personality whatsoever. I know he's a vampire, but he could have a little more depth. He's kind of boring. And Sookie... well, I can think of several words to describe her, none of which are very flattering. But, she reminds me of a bad actress. Know how when you see a movie with a character that just clearly can't act? And you want to like her but it's just bad...? That's what Sookie reminds me of. And she spends half the novel crying. I don't know. It was different, so I will probably give the second one a shot.

4 out of 5 stars Reading in between black dagger brotherhood.......2007-09-18

I'll admit that I'm obsessed with vampire romance novels. I haven't been able to find anything to read in between Black Dagger Brotherhood novels. It was actually getting quiet irritating reading 50 pages of a book and putting it down forever. Thank goodness for Sookie Stackhouse. Being from the South has its full advantages when reading this series. The "War of Southern Aggression..." come on...thats just hilarious. This book takes a little getting used to reading, but after the first couple of chapters, you have to know what happens. It is also good to read if you are just getting into romance novels because the love scenes are not quiet as graphic as some other series. All in all, a light, humourous read. Plus, the second and third books are even better!

5 out of 5 stars Something to sink your teeth in.......2007-08-17

Although I should know better than to judge a book by its cover, for the longest time I refused to read this series because the cover just didn't seem to fit a vampire book, however I was running low on books to read, and I've seen Charlaine Harris's name on reviews of several books I adore so I figured I'd go ahead and give it a try. It was well worth the money I spent for the book, and I have a new author to read now.

The characterizations are wonderful and Harris puts a new spin on many of things. Sookie, is a wonderful light hearted main female character and pretty unique in the genera as she seems more down to earth--despite her disability [the ability to read minds]. The vampires in the book cross a wide varieties of spectrums-- from Bill a vampire trying to mainstream it, to Bubba whose drug problem when he was human affected his turning and unlife, as well as the more stereotypical vampires. The plot was also quite solid, with enough twists to keep you entertained.

I am looking forward to reading the other novels in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Dead Until Dark.......2007-08-16

" Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quite, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much. Not because she's not pretty. She is. It's just that, well, Sookie has this sort of "disability". She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill. He's tall, dark, handsome- and Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting for all her life....

But Bill has a disability of his own. He's a vampire with a bad reputation. He hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, all suspected of - big surprise - murder. And when one of Sookie's coworkers is killed, she fears she's next...."

This was the introduction of the story on the back cover. But I honestly do think that it is very easy to underestimate the story just by reading that intro. The story is much more intriguing, really catchy and very well written. I have actually started reading the series for the second time and it's as good and as "contagious" as it was the first time I read the books.
I definitely recommend these series to those who love paranormal romances/mysteries !!!

5 out of 5 stars A Master Story Teller.......2007-06-23

Until Dark I loved this book, I thought I knew who the antaganist was,but when the person was revealed at the last minute I was shocked. This goes to show Mariah Stewart is a master at her craft.
I try to find as many Mariah Stewart books as I can. I started with the Dead Certain series, now I have the Dark Truth series to the President Daughter and Brown Eyed Girl among others. I am on the look out for more. I even go back and reread her books even though I have over a hundred other books in my library to chose from.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of amateurish..........2006-02-24

After reading less than 30 pages and the back cover, I had already figured out who the killer was. Also, Mariah seems to be in dire need of an editor. The characters were okay, but I was not excited about this story. I bought this based on the current rating which has me questioning the tastes of the reviewers.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read!.......2005-09-29

This is the first novel of Ms. Stewart's I have had the pleasure of reading, and I can tell you it won't be the last! I was, literally, unable to put this novel down until the very last twist, and final secrets were revealed.
A wonderful read for a cool rainy night curled on the couch with a blanket and a cup of tea!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Enough.......2005-01-23

SUMMARY: FBI composite artist Kendra Smith channels her painful past and uses her extraordinary talent to create sketches of criminals so stunningly realistic that her sketches have led to the capture of some of the country's most violent offenders. Her former flame, Agent Adam Stark, has recruited Kendra to sift through varying accounts and come up with a composite of the Soccer Mom Strangler, a vicious serial killer who targets blond, blue-eyed "super moms." Kendra's sketches reflect the physical changes the killer undergoes to hide her identity, but as the body count rises, it becomes clear that he has now fixated on Kendra. His motive, however, is unclear: is he fascinated with her because she's only one step behind him, or is his interest more sinister, related to Kendra's painful past?

WHY YOU'LL LIKE IT: Stewart has a knack for developing strong, balanced, and interesting heroines, and Kendra Smith is no exception. She's imminently likable, and it's impossible not to root for her.

WHY YOU WON'T: Despite able actions sequences and some interesting twists, it is apparent very early on who the perpetrator is and why he's targeting Kendra.

BOTTOM LINE: Lite on the suspense, but heavy on character, this frothy brew is great for whiling away a few hours on a rainy day.

4 out of 5 stars A GOOD SUSPENSE.......2004-12-10

This was a very good suspense novel. It caught my attention from the very beginning and carried me to the end. I thought it was a fairly good read and was finished without realizing that I had even read that much of the book.
I only had a few problems with it. One, I wouldn't say this was a romantic suspense novel. It had a romantic interest to it, but not one that ever amounted to much or really finished. Maybe Mariah Stewart will continue with their relationship in other novels because the characters were interesting and there is a lot of potential with their line of work for a sequel.
Two, I was really hoping for a surprise ending. I had read another readers review and thought maybe I would be stumped and shocked, but was a little disappointed when I figured it out early in the story.
Last, the story didn't seem to have any kind of finality. Maybe there is another sequel out there. The story had a touch of an ending but still left me hanging.
Nevertheless, it was a good read and I will try more books by Mariah Stewart.

4 out of 5 stars Wait Until You Read This!.......2002-01-21

Charlotte Bates wishes for adventure in Karen Robards' MANNA FROM HEAVEN, and boy--does she get it! Jake Crutcher falls to her from the night sky, and soon drug smugglers are hunting Charlie and Jake, fighting river currents and falling in love.

In Andrea Kane's STONE COLD, Lindsey Hall is being threatened. Someone doesn't want her the keep the mansion she has just inherited. Could it be Nicholas Warner? He wants the land and he wants Lindsey...but which does he want more?

Addie Rivers, the beautiful librarian in Linda Anderson's ONCE IN A BLUE MOON, has a crush on Will Court, the handsome professor who's staying at her bed and breakfast. Addie's book club friends have been turning up dead and she may be next. Is it coincidence that the murders start up just when Will arrives in town?

In 'TIL DEATH DO US PART by Mariah Stewart, model Valerie McAllister is attacked by a stalker. She goes home to Montana and to Schuyler Hollister. Sky and Val never had the chance to get together, first Sky always saw her as his friends' little sister, and then her job took her away. Now they finally have the chance, but will the stalker come between them?

I enjoyed all four stories in the WAIT UNTIL DARK anthology. Great suspense, intrigue, adventure and romance in all. I especially enjoyed Linda Anderson's ONCE IN A BLUE MOON. I was lying in bed reading it last night, and I kept looking around my room making sure I was really alone. I felt so silly, but that just goes to show that Ms. Anderson has created an exceptionally atmospheric story.

If you are looking for a romance book that is heavy on the suspense and will keep you on the edge of your set, then you've found it in this anthology. Go out and get your copy today!

3 out of 5 stars Fairly exciting mysteries!.......2001-09-04

I picked this up in the airport for light reading and was very amused by these 4 short story/mystery/romances. Karen Robards tale about a Country Western singer and the DEA agent who saves both their lives in a rather chilling, exciting chase was very good.
Andrea Kane's story about an inheritance that really messes up a family plan was interesting.
Linda Anderson's tale about a small town librarian and the handsome professor boarding at her mother's Bed and Breakfast was scary and chilling. I was kept guessing for a period of time on who the bad guy was. Mariah Stewart's story I found was the weakest. It just did not do it for me. But I finished the whole book by the time I got to Atlanta and it was a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining anthology.......2001-08-08

Karen Robards' first short story was so enthralling I couldn't put it down until I was finished. The others were equally entertaining. I am definitely going to explore more of the novels of Karen Robards !! Highly recommended for summer reading.

5 out of 5 stars A well balenced anthology.......2001-05-01

"Manna From Heaven" by Karen Robards. Country western singer Charlie is in the remote wilderness getting rid of a wild and angry raccoon. As part of a drug deal, Jake parachutes onto her car, thinking that Charlie is the driver Laura he is to meet. Now love and danger have just begun.

"Stone Cold" by Andrea Kane. In Rhode Island, when her biological father dies, he leaves Lindsey a mansion that surprises everyone since they never met and had no relationship outside of shared genes. His family wants that house and Nicholas goes to obtain it from the usurper until he falls into his own seductive trap by loving his victim.

"Once In a Blue Moon" by Linda Anderson. Addie wonders if a serial killer is on the loose and could it be the handsome visiting research professor Will? She hopes not because he is quickly gaining her heart.

"'Til Death Do Us Part" by Mariah Stewart. In Southern California, someone stalks model Valerie to the point that she flees for her hometown in Montana. Her childhood sweetheart offers Sky comfort, protection, and most important love, as the clever culprit has followed her to Big Sky Country. All four stories are exciting non-stop romantic suspense tales that star fully developed charcaters who showcase the talents of this strong quartet of writers.

4 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Probably the best of the first three World of Darkness books, with that
uneasy Mage feeling of being slightly out of step with everything. They
are obviously feeling their way with this sort of thing, but Mage was
what appealed to me the most, which is perhaps why I like this book
more out of the first three.

4 out of 5 stars Affirmative.......2005-09-02

James Yanni, you have absolutely read my mind and I'm so giddy that someone else feels the exact same way, so I won't go into a long review. My only thing was that I think my personal "tilt" toward some of the best stories was enough to redeem the ones that were less appealing. Don't get me wrong, professionalism and spelling errors aside, I think all the stories are at least a fine read to some extent.

But some, like Introit, really grabbed me. The main character altered my perceptions of the Chorus so completely, that I wanted to make my own Chorister Mage. My atheist preconceptions of the Tradition were tossed out the window and I honestly think I'm a better Mage player because of that. ;D

I found "When The Moon" a little mysterious, because it didn't really seem to fit into the Mage universe, rather it fed me some really strange imagery that made the story sort of hard to follow. The ending, though a tad cheesy, was very enjoyable as I heard the song floating through my head and humming through my lips for hours after. Overall, it was just weird though. XD

"Candledark" was a little between River from Firefly and Penny Dreadful. Good read, but yeah, a little sketchy around the end.

Overall, I find that all the themes in the Mage game are here: Nephandi, Technocracy, Marauders, Traditions all at each others' throats. The whole sci-fi feel of alot of the stories really appealed to me, and let's face it, there isn't much Mage fiction streaming directly from White Wolf any more. I think there are 2 other books including this one-Penny Dreadful(which is SUCH an awesome read) and the TOJ series that ran a few years ago which wasn't very entertaining.

I ABSOLUTELY recommend you download (for free) and read Penny Dreadful from the old White Wolf site.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but of spotty quality........2001-05-13

This is a collection of short stories set in the "World of Darkness" that is the backdrop for the "Mage" role playing game. Many of the stories are quite interesting and well-written; a few more are either one or the other. A few were just not up to professional standards. In general, this is a fairly interesting read, but I do wish that they had better quality control: the number of typos and other proofreading errors was higher than should be found in a professionally edited book.

The first story, "The Crystal Messiah", by Philip Nutman, started well, but the ending looked as if the author had missed his deadline, and had to rush 25+ pages of story into a one-page summary.

Next, "The Great Escape", by Edo van Belkom, was interesting and well-written (being one of the few stories in the volume in which I DIDN'T find a typo, grammatical error, or malaprop) but I thought that the basic idea was a rather trivial conflict, even if it was potentially deadly.

"Introit", by Jackie Cassada, was perhaps the best of the lot except for the stories by Kevin Andrew Murphy and James A. Moore; again, there were no glaring errors, but more importantly, the characters were well-developed, the plot moved well and seemed reasonable, and the ending was satisfying.

"When The Moon", by James S. Dorr, was not bad; it had its share of typos, and I can't really say that it resonated with me, but it was a fair story, fairly told.

"That Which Is Given", by Don Bassingthwaite, again had its share of errors, but other than that was a very interesting story, very well told.

"Waiting For Yesterday", by Brett Brooks, was a well-told story, and fairly interesting, but I found the ending less than satisfying.

"Candledark", by Thomas S. Roche, was a moderately interesting story, more sloppily proofed than most, with interesting characters, and a somewhat implausible ending.

"Make 'Em Laugh", by James Lowder, had no obvious errors in the text, and was a marvellous story with interesting characters and a very satisfying ending.

"A Block Of Time", by Jane M. Lindskold, had a bit more than its share of errors, but was otherwise an interesting and enjoyable read.

"The Judas Tree", by Richard Lee Byers, was an interesting story too, but had WAY too many errors to be considered professional (I count 11 in a twenty page story). Professionals proofread their own work, Richard.

"End Run", by Nigel D. Findley, was not the most interesting of stories, but it was told in an interesting first-person style, and was error-free other than misspelling "tinnitus" as "titinus".

"Pushing The Right Buttons", by Doug Murray, was another sloppily unprofessional story (eight typos in fourteen pages); other than that, it was an only passable story anyway.

"Dreamspeaker", by Bill Crider, had only one typo that I noticed ("through" used when "throw" was meant), but while the story was interesting in general, there was to my mind a flaw in the basic storyline.

"Devil's Bargain", by Thomas Kane, was a fairly interesting story with only somewhat more than its share of typos.

"Silver Nutmeg, Golden Pear" and its sequel, "Grim Reminders", both by Kevin Andrew Murphy and James A. Moore (the first story primarily by the former, the second primarily by the latter),were unquestionably the best of the lot. The characters were delightful, the plot fascinating, and the writing good. Murphy managed to get through a 38 page story with only one noticeable glitch, and Moore 26 pages with three. But these stories were good enough that I'd have been willing to overlook far more typos. I hope to see more writing by these two.

Finally, "The Seven Sages Of The Bamboo Grove", by John H. Steele, was unquestionably the weakest story in the collection. There was only one typo, but the story itself was disjointed, a confusing attempt at being artistic, and neither the plot (such as I was able to follow it) nor the characters were even marginally interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Magick made real - a face for the Traditions.......2000-11-03

I believe this is a very good collection of short stories set within the Mage (RPG) genre. Among its many stories, it hits upon each of the nine Traditions at least once, depicting them in a more 'human' light than the books describe. While its easy for players to read the Core game book and make characters, actually reading a story describing how some of these wonderous beings 'think' sheds a new light upon the whole game.

Many parts of the stories delve into the actual gaming rules, which makes it seem all the more real. An experienced gamer can even learn a thing or two about some 'tricks' to use in their own games. Even if you're not a fan of the Game itself, the short stories are entertaining and definately worth the time to read.

5 out of 5 stars Book 3 of SanFrancisco Chronicles. A Mage Book. GREAT!.......1997-12-17

This is an anthology of stories, each threaded together taking place over Halloween weekend in San Francisco. While Sleepers believe in a world of physical laws, mages understand that reality is shapable and reshapable as needed. Coicidence does not exist! Great book because no single point pierces the veil that lets you declare absolutely that this is fiction. It just might be true! In fact, everything is true, simultaneously, until the human mind fails and conceives paradox!

4 out of 5 stars Captivating story, poorly written........2007-07-31

This story kept your interest and moved rapidly. That said, it was written in a very simple style at about a 12 year old level with numerous misspelled words and typos. It is an easy read for 6 graders, double spaced and would deserve a PG rating, except for some violence and gore.

I truly enjoyed this story, and I was doubly impressed that the author also painted the picture on the cover. I have ordered her second book "ENTER (at your own risk) and cant wait for it to arrive. A friend of mine read it and said it was even better than her first one.

Once you start reading this, it is impossible to put down. It grabs your emotions right from the first page and doesn't let them go til the very end. Absolutely fabulous book April. I hope this is one of many more to come.

5 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get Dark Until Midnight.......2005-03-01

Two Words. "Loved it". April brought my attention right away into the book and I could not put it down. I kept saying to myself- one more page. But I ended up reading until the next chapter. I read it in three days but could have read it in two.
The characters grip at your heart and you want to meet them in real life. I look forward to Aprils next book and definitely will recommend this book to others.
