If you think you've got it tough, meet Christopher Snow, the hero of Dean Koontz's novel Fear Nothing. Not only did his parents die under mysterious circumstances, but he's also being stalked by shadowy characters who want Snow to stop trying to find out how they died--or else they'll bump off his remaining loved ones (his supersmart, beer-lapping dog Orson; his best surfing buddy Bobby; and his late-night deejay girlfriend Sasha). And as if being on the lam in his own hometown, Moonlight Bay, California, isn't bad enough, Snow has to outrun his pursuers without leaving town. He has XP--xeroderma pigmentosum--a rare genetic affliction that forces him to avoid light. Cumulative exposure to sun, fluorescent lights, and the like will give him cancer eventually, and he doesn't dare leave the place where he's skillfully "done the mambo with melanoma" for all of his 28 years. Koontz makes the night-town of Moonlight Bay come alive in this sometimes pulse-pounding, sometimes funny, but mostly rather lyrical thriller. Fans of Koontz's legendary 1986 novel Watchers will love this book's similar theme: our hero and a loveable super-dog deal with a genetic engineering laboratory run amok. Horror fans will savor the evil mutant rhesus "millennium monkeys" who hunt Snow, the few scenes of eloquent gore, and the plight of certain mutating townsfolk who are, as they put it, "becoming" something very creepy.

Koontz gives Snow and Bobby a lingo that does for surfer talk what Austin Powers did for the Swinging '60s, and his metaphors are almost as madcap as Tom Robbins's: "As the chains of the swinging light fixture torqued, the links twisted against one another with enough friction to cause an eerie ringing, as if lizard-eyed altar boys in blood-soaked cassocks and surplices were ringing the unmelodious bells of a satanic mass." Sometimes Koontz's style goes over the top and wipes out, surfer-style, but for the most part, Fear Nothing will have readers bellowing "Cowabunga!"

Book Description

Christopher Snow is the best-known resident of 12,000-strong Moonlight Bay, California. This is because 28-year-old Chris has xeroderma pigmentosum (XP)—a light-sensitivity so severe that he cannot leave his house in daylight, cannot enter a normally-lit room, cannot sit at a computer. Chris's natural element is the night, and his parents, both academics, chose to live in Moonlight Bay because in a small town Chris can make the nightscape his own—roaming freely through the town on his bike, surfing in the moonlight, exploring while most people sleep.

But Chris's brilliant mother, a scientist, was killed in a car accident 2 years ago, and as the book opens his father, Steven Snow, is dying of cancer; Chris's protected life is about to change forever. We meet Chris as he is carefully preparing himself to go out in the late-afternoon sun to visit the hospital. In his last moments of life his father tells Chris he is "sorry" and that Chris should "fear nothing"—cryptic words that Chris cannot really relate to.

Steven Snow's body is removed to the hospital basement for transport to the funeral home/crematorium, and when Chris goes downstairs for a final moment of farewell, he witnesses a frightening and clandestine encounter: the funeral director and another man Chris doesn't recognize are substituting the body of a hitchhiker for Steven Snow's body–which is being taken not to the crematorium but to some secret destination.

For Chris, this scene is the first intimation of a conspiracy that he will come to realize envelopes many of his townspeople. His parents knew of it and wanted to protect Chris from it. His best friend has had hints of something wrong because of the frightening nocturnal visitors that have come to his beachhouse. And the first person to try to explain to Chris what's going on—and warn him about the special danger he himself is in—will be hideously murdered.

In the 24 hours this book encompasses, Christopher Snow will find out that, sheltered though he's been, he has the soul of a fighter and an adventurer. By the end of the book he will have killed a man, will have discovered the role his own mother played in the birth of the conspiracy, will have come to recognize the extraordinary guardians that, unknown to him, have watched over him for years. He will realize that some people hate him, others revere him, and neither his own life nor those of anyone he knows will ever be the same.

5 out of 5 stars Fear Nothing.......2007-10-05

This being the first book I've read by Dean Koontz what a ride. I loved it I can't wait to read more.

4 out of 5 stars If you enjoyed Watchers..........2007-10-01

I LOVED Watchers. Of all his books, that one has remained one of my favorites for years. This, in my opinion, is the closest we will get to a sequel.

The laboratory that created Einstein has been moved, but they are still up to their old experiments--altering nature to 'see what we'll get'.

The next book, Seize the Night is equally as good (read impossible to put down) and left things open for another novel that I (and my husband) have anxiously been awaiting.

If you want "realistic/probable" then don't pick this book up. If you want a roller coaster ride through the same world Koontz took us to in Watchers, then this is a MUST.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected greatness.......2007-09-21

"Fear Nothing" was my second Koontz book; the first was "Velocity". I enjoyed Velocity very much and was aware of Koontz's reputation as a great writer of suspense thrillers. I felt "Velocity" was very good, but didn't feel that it was anything more than just your standard "good" book (not "great"), so I was expecting about the same level of enthusiasm for "Fear Nothing"

Boy, was I blindsided! This book grabbed a hold of me and just wouldn't let go. I was riveted from the first page to the last. This was the best book I had read in YEARS (IMHO, I found it more ejoyable than "The DaVinci Code which was my favorite book up until I read this one).

The characters were so well-developed that I felt as though I had actually known these people. I genuinely CARED what happened to them as if they were true flesh-and-blood persons. I couldn't help it. I just got caught up in the escapism of this story.

I also enjoyed the first-person point of view in which the novel was written. The descriptiveness of the narrative was pure art and I savored every letter of every word. I could visualize every single scene in my head in perfect detail, as if I were an outside observer standing close by.

The plot is outstanding. It starts of with a mystery as creepy goings-on in anytown, America start to come to the surface. As the plot unfolds, a downright scary future for the world is revealed. The "climactic battle" at the end will leave you absolutely breathless.

I would recommend this book to ANYONE. Highly enjoyable and expertly crafted. This is one that I will defintely read again in the near future (a practice I ONLY reserve for EXCEPTIONAL works).

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-09-11

My husband and I are big Dean Koontz fans, so I was astonished to hear that he had never read Fear Nothing or Seize the Night! I ordered them for him immediately. The characters are fun and interesting, and the adventures and conspiracies they encounter keep you hooked. Watchers is my all-time favorite, but the Chris Snow books come a close second. I definitely recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Another page-turner with cool characters.......2007-08-14

I love scary books with humor and Koontz always delivers. You have to adore the characters, especially Orson, the dog/brother. I can't wait to read the sequels just to see what Orson is up to. Plus, I have a feeling (hope) we'll see more of some of the colorful minor players.

Overall, I was anxious to see what would happen--some good mystery and suspense here and Koontz does a great job with setting and characterization. (I love the Chris Isaak references, too. Dancin' is playing as I write this!)

But, I only gave it four stars because the plot felt a bit stitched together and in some parts, descriptions and back story got rather long and seemed to go nowhere.

Still a great read, though.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing to fear.......2007-08-28

I really enjoyed this book. It was different from many thrillers I have already read.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing to Fear.......2007-08-17

This is my first Karen Rose book, and I will definitely go out and buy her others.

NOTHING TO FEAR isn't your typical whodunnit, because from the moment the first crime occurs you don't have to guess who did it, you know. The only question is, why?

Karen Rose sucks you into this book from the very beginning. The moment you read her opening hook, questions start forming in your mind and you can't help wonder who Sue Conaway is, and what drives her to such evil.

The reader first encounters Sue Conaway at a funeral and right from the start you get the feeling that she's not there to pay her respects. It doesn't take long to figure out that she's waiting for someone to arrive, and though you don't know who that person is, you know something horrible is about to happen to them. AND right on cue, Karen Rose proves your instincts right with Sue Conaway's bitter words. "Be afraid, I'm coming."

When Randi and Stan Vaughn return home from vacation they find a dead body in their shed and their twelve year old son, Alex and his speech therapist, Cheryl Rickman, gone. The only thing left behind is a note to say that their son has been kidnapped and will be killed if they contact the authorities.

Next we meet Ethan Buchanan when the Vaughn's beg him to find their son. Ethan tries to reason with them, to make them realize that he's not the FBI or the police, but they won't take no for an answer. The Vaughn's win him over when Stan plays on Ethan's guilt over the death of his brother, Richard, when they served together in Kandahar. Scared to death for Alex who is not only deaf and mute, but his Godson, Ethan agrees. Next thing he knows, he is on the trail of a murderer, and inadvertently ends up in the arms of the woman of his dreams.

Dana Dupinsky has dedicated her life to helping abused women, so its nothing out of the ordinary when "Jane," contacts her about staying at her shelter, known as Hanover House. Dana is waiting late one night at the train station which is bringing Jane and her son, when Dana tries to stop a mugging. The old lady is unharmed, but Dana ends up being knocked down and into the arms of Ethan Buchanan. Sparks fly between the two and a relationship begins to form.

In the end Ethan finds out that there is a whole lot he doesn't know about Dana. AND when her friends start coming up dead, Dana realizes that she must place her trust in Ethan or suffer the same fate.

AND in the end they work together to bring down a murderer.

If you're curious to know what happens in the end, you'll just have to read.

This book has so many layers that peel away answering question after question, and I had a hard time putting it down. I found myself biting my lip at some of the horrific things Sue Conaway was capable of. AND many times as I read, I remember hearing, the words, "Ahh, so that's why?" repeated over and over in my mind.

I just want to give Mrs. Rose a shout out- Congratulations on a MAGNIFICENT read!

I give this book 5 ***** stars!

4 out of 5 stars Suspenseful but Formulaic.......2007-07-24

I've read three from Karen Rose so far and they are indeed "page-turners" (I found "Have You Seen Her" to be the best). Rose writes very well and keeps the reader wondering until the very end. I only have two criticisms: (1) plots are overpopulated; there are so many players, I often find myself pausing to remember who's who and how they relate to the story, and (2) the "intimate" scenes are formulaic--strong woman hasn't been with a man for years, meets honorable and handsome guy who also hadn't planned on a new relationship, etc., If you read one Rose sex scene, you've read them all. But don't get me wrong, I think this prolific writer is great and I will be purchasing more of her books.

4 out of 5 stars Rose is one of my new favorite romantic suspense authors..........2007-06-16

Good book, though a bit on the dark and semi-gorey side. I don't think I liked it as much as the other two Karen Rose books that I've read, but I did enjoy reading it. Like "Have You Seen Her" one of the things I liked about this book was the character continuity. Dana was in "Don't Tell" as a secondary character, so it was nice to read her story. And I liked seeing what Caroline and Max (from Don't Tell) were up to. Plus Rose also brings back Evie. (I hope someday she gives Evie her book).

Anyway, the book had a good plot. I think it helps to have read "Don't Tell" first because you have a more clear picture of some of the nuances about what Dana does. But even so, the plot was stand alone. Like Rose's other books, she doesn't keep the antagonist a secret. You know from pretty much the first page who the bad guy is going to be. I'm not sure how much I like that. It takes away some of the suspense. Aside from that, I like how the plot was built-up and worked with. The story kept me into the book. And the romance was pretty good. I liked Dana and Ethan. They worked pretty well together.

One of the negatives of the book, in my opinion, was that I think Rose spent too much time on the antagonist. I just felt there were too many pages dedicated to the bad guy's POV. I didn't need that much to have the story work, and I really didn't need some of the gory details that came out in those POV sections. I sometimes ended up skimming through those parts. But it didn't kill that the book, it just made it about longer than it needed to be.

Author Karen Rose jumped on my favorite authors list with her first release back in 2003, Don't Tell. With her latest release, NOTHING TO FEAR, she's impressed me so much that I'll be buying her books as long as she keeps writing them. Romantic suspense has always been, and will undoubtedly continue to be, my favorite genre, and no one does it better than Ms. Rose. Heart-pounding action, hard-core suspense, passionate romance, and characters that pull you into the story are her trademarks, and NOTHING TO FEAR has all of that, and more.

In the first chapter of the book, you know what happens, and you know who does it. What you don't know, and don't find out for quite awhile, is why the bad guys go to the length of evil that they do to terrorize one particular family. And finding that out is worth the read.

Stan and Randi Vaughn have had their worst nightmares come to life. Their son, twelve-year-old Alex, has been kidnapped. It's bad enough that the boy is probably scared to death, but he's also deaf, so his terror is even more palpable. Having already witnessed the murder of Paul McMillan, the fiance of his speech therapist, Cheryl Rickman, Alex is thrust into running for his life with a mad-woman. Yes, in this story, the villain is a woman, and a truly insane one, at that. Now Cheryl has been murdered in cold blood and dumped by the roadside, and it's up to Alex to keep his wits and stay alive.

Alex's parents have called on Ethan Buchanan, a security expert with a private investigator's license, to find and rescue their son. Ethan stresses to the distraught parents that he's not a policeman, but Stan and Randi are adamant-the ransom note left behind after Alex's disappearance states that the authorities are not to be involved, or their son will end up like Paul McMillan. Taking the kidnappers at their word, Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn convince Ethan to search for Alex-and his investigation takes him to a train station in Chicago in the middle of the night to look at security surveillance tapes.

While there, Ethan takes notice of Dana Dupinsky, a woman who seems to have secrets of her own. Why is she hanging around a train station in the dead of night? Why does she look so nervous, and act as if he's the devil incarnate? And why do sparks fly between him and this woman he's just met?

Dana has secrets of her own, the first and foremost being that she runs Hanover House, a shelter for abused women. Dana's goal in life is to rescue as many needy women and children as possible, and to help them escape the lives of terror that they led. Now, though, there's a murderer within the walls of her sanctuary, and she doesn't even know it.

As Ethan's mission coincides with Dana's, and as bodies start piling up in Chicago, this man and woman learn that trust is earned, that love runs deep, and that rescuing a child from danger is the most important job of all.

NOTHING TO FEAR is an absolute gem. If there were ten blue ribbons to give, that would be my rating for this book. It's definitely earned a place on my keeper shelf, and I look forward to reading it again and again. This is what true romantic suspense is all about, and I thank Ms. Rose for such a wonderful read.

5 out of 5 stars Historical fiction at it's finest!.......2007-06-27

This story is a well written account of life during the Great Depression! I thoroughly enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing to Fear.......2006-10-15

I read this book three years ago, when I was [...], and I really enjoyed it. I had a very basic idea what the Great Depression was, but I didn't really know.
Now, I'm reading it again. I've read it before and can understand it more, and it really is an outstanding book. It's well written, filled with dialogue and conflict, and provided me with different people's points of view on the Great Depression. Now that I'm older, I know what it is, and how it happened, but that actually made the book lose some of it's sparkle. It's still a great book and I would recommend it to anyone 8-12 who wants an insight on the Great Depression through the eyes of a young boy. I would also recommend it to anyone who likes adventure, friendship, and a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing to Fear.......2005-12-14

Danny Garvey and his family are trying to deal with the hardships of going through the Great Depression. Danny's dad Daniel Garvey decides to leave to look for work because Danny's family doesn't have enough money to support themselves. Weeks pass and Danny, his mother, and, sister wait for a letter from Daniel. Danny's family eventually becomes very close to the Riley family because of the absence of Daniel. Christmas comes and Danny hopes that his dad will make it home for Christmas. Danny's dad doesn't show up and Danny's family is very disappointed. Months go by and there is still no word from Daniel. Then Danny learns that his mother is pregnant and as weeks go by she becomes very sick. Danny's family meets a guy named Hank and he is the one who cares for Danny's sick mother. Danny's mother eventually goes into a coma and Danny finds a letter that tells him that Daniel died. Then one week passes and Danny's mom awakes from the coma and marries Hank. They then have a grand funeral for Danny's dad as the Great Depression finally subsides.

This story's setting is in the neighborhoods of New York City. It is a poor neighborhood and the people do not have any hope of surviving the depression. This story takes place for about a year.

I would recommend this story to anyone because it teaches you a great amount on how people's lives were affected in the Great Depression. This story will make you appreciate the things you take advantage of in life. You should read this book because it is so interesting and is funny at times. This story is very heartbreaking but is one of the most heartwarming stories. I enjoyed this story so much.

5 out of 5 stars What Characters!.......2004-04-20

I have always thought that the 1930's were the most interesting times in the 20th century to study. So, much was changing in the world and so much in the United States. Danny Garvey, the main character, is a boy who trys to live through these hard times with all the courage he can muster, looking after Ma and little Maureen. His Pa, Daniel , senior is a man torn between staying with his family and looking for a job. Molly, the mother, has to hold together her family and support it at the same time. Maggie, the next door neighbor girl, is as tough as nails and sweet on Danny.Hank, the Okie, comes into Danny's life at a diffucult time to help out. Mr. Weissman is a store owner just trying to make it. Mrs. Riley, Maggies's Mom, raising 7 kids through the Depression and an abusive alcholic husband. This book really captures the Depressiona and the peole who lived through it. Jackie Koller makes this time period real for kids and adults who are lucky enough to pick up her book. IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO HAVE KNOWN THESE CHARACTERS!!!!

Book Description

In Nothing to Fear, Larry Burkett tells his personal journey of a seven-year battle with cancer. Filled with intimate stories and wisdom from the Word, this book will be a great help to the thousands of people who fight this disease, or to friends and loved ones of those in the midst of the struggle. Larry's 2003 passing was the result of heart failure rather than cancer. His legacy continues today and his words still bring hope to those in need of encouragement. 'Even if you can avoid dying from cancer, you'll certainly face something else that will eventually kill you, because all of us are going to die. As god as modern medicine is, it is not the ultimate answer. It will let you down. Trusting God is the answer. He will never let you down.' -Excerpt from Nothing to Fear

Hello. I recently sent this book to a friend who was preparing to go into surgery to remove cancer from his colon. Needless to say he was very apprehensive about the procedure and actually felt like his time on this earth had come to its natural end.

Last night, I got the great news that the surgery went well and my friend is resting comfortably. His brother told me this book helped tremendously and gave my friend the hope and inspiration he needed as he prepared for this dreadful cancer removal procedure.

There's nothing like direct, positive feedback. God bless my friend and here's too many more years of good living!

Enjoyable read and I will purchase more of her books. Right now I am hooked on PD James. It is not fair to compare.

1 out of 5 stars Skip this one - you can do better!.......2006-05-27

Wow, this book is just BAD BAD BAD.

Not only does the author obviously know NOTHING about ferrets (very poor attempt at research, she had many facts just plain wrong), but the writing in this book is also pretty darn poor. I have read many other teen books (I can only hope this was intended for young teens, not adult fiction!) and this one is definitely more poorly written than average. I could only read the first 17 pages before I just couldn't take anymore - I had to skim the rest. The characters are silly, vacant and poorly written - I found myself rolling my eyes and groaning more times than I could count! The fact that this book has an average rating of four stars is even worse - if THIS book has a four-star average, what good is the rating of books in general!?

Overall, I got the impression this book was written over a weekend - and that includes research time. Not worth the effort - if you like animals and want to read young teen animal books, skip this one and try Bunnicula or The Black Stallion instead.

2 out of 5 stars Needs ferret research, has stereotypical characters and predictable plot.......2006-04-14

First-research. If you are writing a series about animals, and you are using a species you haven't first hand knowledge of, is it OK to fudge facts assuming your readers won't know or care anyway?

Regarding any research-is it OK to fudge say, facts about the Middle Ages, or how to fire a particular gun, or make up some poison to create a murder method?

My opinion is, if you have a particular subject you are writing about, get the most accurate info about the subject you can, check and recheck your facts, because the reader is trusting the writer's knowledge and takes this info away from the book believing what was described about the subject is truth.

This is particularly important if the entire series is bulit around the premise of a pet sitter.Of course, not many writers are familiar with the ferret species, especially if not ferret owners. But if one is writing an entire plot revolving around ferrets, doesn't it behoove the writer to learn all salient facts?

I started reading this mystery of a pet sitter detective, Ms. Ballantyne and the facts regarding ferret behavior started off dead wrong, and continued along those lines throughout the book.

Granted, the detective lives in CA, ferrets are illegal, and she had to use the Internet to get info about them. Having done that, the detective still thinks it may be possible that ferrets ate a corpse. Not to the bone, mind you, but bites about the entire body. And she wasn't thoroughly convinced they didn't kill the victim to begin with.

Now, my question is, if the detective used the Internet, didn't the author writing the novel also use the Internet for info? And if so, didn't she read enough to understand that ferrets do not "make noise" when frightened-and wouldn't have been frightened by a car crashing through a wall to begin with? More likely, they would want out of the cage to explore the bucket seats. I won't even get into the likelihood of vampire ferrets.

And why does she confuse a domesticated ferret with Black Footed ones (*not* domesticated and not even related to the domesticated ferret) that are a hair's breath from extinction, and *not* roaming around North Dakota--and I'm referring to both species here.

So, research is very poor for this book, something non ferret fanciers may be able to overlook.

Stereotypical characters. The author kept making pointed remarks about a couple of characters' weight-to the point that the unpleasantness of one character's personality was almost defined by her being fat. Someone needs to inform this author that stereotyping people like that in fiction went out with Simon Legree and Little Nell on the railroad tracks.
Other characters, such as the pain in the behind cop, the oh-so-sexy private eye (or law enforcer) love interest, the male best friend pet spa owner, are standard in practically every amateur detective novel. No originallity here.

There are quicker, better ways of summorizing the first book's high points than the redundant recounting of them throughout the first couple of chapters. I felt as though I already read the book after the multiple references.

The plot isn't original or interesting-other than the idea of Bela Legosi ferrets.

I usually don't critize crime fiction I don't like. It is a matter of taste in many instances. But the severe lack of facts, plus irritating characters and plot, compelled me to take a stand for once.

5 out of 5 stars Pet Sitting and Murder.......2006-03-15

Kendra Ballantyne is continuing her pet sitting business while studying to take the ethics exam in hopes of reinstating her law degree.

A neighbor's Hummer crashes into her house. She discovers her tenants living in her former home are keeping illegal ferrets.

Soon after she discovers a corpse in her tenants' den. The ferrets are the prime suspects. The corpse turned out to be Chad Chatsworth and Charlotte LaVerne, her tenant, and her boytoy Yul become suspects. Charlotte asks Kendra to help prove they didn't do it. Kendra had recently helped prove her own innocence. With the help of her boyfriend Jeff Hubbard, a P.I. and security specialist, Kendra sets out to look into Chad's background. She finds he had many enemies. Can she discover who killed him and why he was killed in her home and the ferrets were implicated without putting herself or others in danger?

I really enjoy this series. Kendra is such a fun character. Her pet sitting adds so much to the enjoyment of this series. Plus her relationship with Jeff and police detective Ned Noralles make for a fun read.

This cozy is a fun, easy read. I always find myself coming to the end of the book before I realize it since I just want to keep reading!

I highly recommend this book and the whole series. Can't wait to read Fine-Feathered Death, the next in the series.

I study Shakespeare in my high school English class, and used to have a hard time understanding it. Then I got No Fear Shakespeare and now love the work of Shakespeare! Some of the words in the original text you would never think that they mean something different or unexpected in the modern text. It also explains some of the puns and humor. GREAT!!

5 out of 5 stars Are you ready?.......2004-09-24

Mr. Singh lived the life of an ascetic in the Himalayas in the 1940's (not exactly sure about the date) and seems to have left some years later with a sense of clarity. Later he was involved in responding to the poverty in postwar India. In the 1950's he met Mr. J Krishnamurti in the USA who told him, "There are no problems apart from the mind." The externals continued to have less and less hold of him until he met Helen Schuman, the Scribe of A Course in Miracles and his life was transformed. Helen encouraged him to teach the Course and he did for many years before retirement.

The true student of the Course will have to confront his own thought and this will take real dedication and honesty. Mr. Singh's words will not let the student hide from this challenge.
