Book Description

Dear Reader,Welcome to the world of Jamie Swift and Max Holt! My good friend Charlotte Hughes and I have teamed up to create a series of books featuring these two characters and they've taken on a life of their own! These books are not set in the same world as my Stephanie Plum novels, but what they have in common is lovable, dysfunctional characters, villains you love to hate, and a cross-eyed way of looking at life. Jamie and Max have intense chemistry-even though they drive each other crazy. Max thinks Jamie is a magnet for trouble and Jamie thinks Max is the most annoyingly sexy, mysterious man she's ever met. She knows she should stay away from him. But boy, oh boy, do the sparks fly when they get together. Jamie is a newspaper owner from a small southern town. And in Full Speed, she's after the story of a lifetime. Max Holt is right in the middle of that story, and so Jamie tracks down the millionaire playboy, forcing him to take her on as partner. What follows is a story of a corrupt minister, a gang of mobsters on the loose, a hound dog called Fleas, a wise-cracking computer genius, and lots of love in the fast lane. Not to mention plenty of steamy action between Jamie and Max. So have fun with Full Speed. We're going to sign off now and get back to creating more romantic adventures between Jamie Swift and Max Holt. Enjoy and happy reading! Janet and Charlotte

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Evanovich.......2007-05-12

Love any and all of Janet Evanovich's books. Arrived as promised. Read all of the "Full" series.

4 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars .......2007-02-27

Left alone in the middle of nowhere, Jamie Swift could have gone home, but decided to go on a little adventure where she found a man with connections to the mob, and a man whom she couldn't trust but her body responded to. One of those men could be the end of her, but which one?

When in the mood for a comical mystery, no one is better then Janet Evanovich, but this book failed to deliver. The amount of comical scenes could be counted on one hand, and the characters were pretty boring with an exception of a few. Though the book was extremely predictable, it was okay if you don't compare it to her Plum series. Jamie and Max were okay characters, they were pretty normal compared to what Janet Evanovich is capable of. But Dave was a funny character that gave the novel it's much needed comical relief. This novel wasn't one of Janet's best, but it wasn't the worst either.

3 out of 5 stars Not your typical Evanovich.......2006-10-05

Jamie Swift refuses to let Max Holt's words of discouragement stop her from getting her newspaper story about a crooked preacher involved with the mob. She decides to go undercover on her own, but when Max finds out, she realizes he has more connections than she does. The multimillionaire has the hots for her as well as the need to protect Jamie. With a hit out on Max, it is up to Jamie to find the evidence, but nothing works out the way anyone plans.

I picked up Full Speed thinking that it was the first in the series and was a bit confused in the beginning. The book seemed to start off without much lead way from the previous book. I felt like I was missing something.

It definitely didn't compare with the Stephanie Plum books. The only funny character is Dave the hypochondriac. The whole "Muffin" talking computer with a personality thing is just a female version of "Kit" from Knight Rider.

Is it worth buying?
If you are looking for another series like the Plum ones, than you will be disappointed. There was more action and suspense in this novel, but the story line was a bit underdeveloped. I think if you are really curious about reading the Full series, than check them out from the library. $7.99 for a paperback that you may get bored with quickly just isn't worth it.

4 out of 5 stars A smidgen better than the last........2006-09-03

Jamie Swift is on yet another adventure with the wealthy and sexy Max Holt. Max helped Jamie pull her newspaper back afloat in "Full Tilt", and now she's tagged along to find a new story for the paper. They intend on going after a minister (Harlan Rawlins) with ties to the mob, and who had also ordered a hit on Max to be pursued.

Jamie has ditched Max after a dispute over her safety, and she sets off alone to a tiny town named Sweet Pea, Tennessee. Jamie soon finds herself in disguise seducing Harlan to get the information she wants for her story, but right on cue, Max appears in disguise as well. The two of them work together to uncover the mastermind behind it all, but not in time before both of their lives are in danger.

---

Janet Evanovich can't seem to write the Stephanie Plum novels fast enough for me, and I'd hate to go though withdrawal from her books. So I've managed to stick with her Full series. I don't know if I will read some of her other romances, but I intend on completing this series.

I liked "Full Speed" a little more than "Full Tilt" because it seemed more realistic, and it had a stronger sense of danger. I didn't laugh a whole lot, but once I got going, it was hard to put the book down. I'm curious to see what happens next!

In my opinion, it may not be at all comparable to the SP series, but I still find this Full series is filled with enough thrills for my liking. I understand that there will always be people who won't like this series, but I would probably recommend it to anyone who hasn't started with any JE books yet. That way they won't have to suffer any pain and disappointment if they pick up a better series (in this case, Stephanie Plum) after this one ;)

3 out of 5 stars I Want a Dog Like Fleas!.......2006-07-22

I'm a recent Janet Evanovich fan and have devoured her entire Stephanie Plum series. Craving more from her, I turned to her recent FULL series. FULL SPEED is the third installment in this series and although it's fun and easy to read, it is a bit lacking when compared to the Stephanie Plum books.

In the previous book in this series (FULL TILT) we were introduced to Maximillian Holt and Jamie Swift. Max is a multi-millionaire who is gorgeous, witty, extremely intelligent, and has trouble following him wherever he goes. Jamie Swift is a small town girl who is struggling to keep her local newspaper afloat and in operation. Max became Jamie's silent partner and when the two met it was anything but tame. FULL SPEED picks up the story line from where it left off and we see Max and Jamie going after a wealthy evangelist who has mob ties. Seems Max didn't take lightly the hit the minister put on Max.

Jamie is after a story and Max is after answers, so they decide to work together to figure out exactly what is going on with Harlan Rawlins. Seems Harlan isn't too happy that Max turned down his offer to purchase his television station and hired a hit man to eliminate Max. The chase leads Max and Jamie to Sweet Pea, Tennessee, a tiny town which is home to Harlan's ministries. They try to infiltrate the ministries with Max posing as an electrician and Jamie as a woman with a sex addiction (Harlan has been known to be a lady's man). Ok, so not the best disguise, but it worked and gave me a few laughs in the process!

As the two are trying to get answers, a mobster who has been sent to Sweet Pea as a family punishment realizes what's happening and ensnares Jamie with lies and bits of information he knows she'll want. Talk about dangling a carrot...

The plot is a bit weak as Jamie and Max easily do their thing and breach security. No one questions either of them, which seems a bit unusual considering the amount of security personnel in place. There is no mystery involved and the reader is fully aware of all elements. Even with these negative aspects, the character development makes this book fun to read.

Characters are true Evanovich - they are witty, fun, eccentric and full of life. Dave, Max's helper, who is a genius and a hypochondriac is so annoying that I wanted to tell him to get over his fetish with dust mites! It was funny as he freaks out in every situation over the "what ifs" that are lurking unseen by the naked eye. Jamie is her usual self, always thinking and wondering about the world. Max is a bit of a kid still, wanting to catch the world by its tail and hang on for a fun ride. Harlan is despicable and the reader doesn't feel sorry for him when he dies. I thought that he was just a waste of a human being. (No Harlan's death is not the mystery portion - who killed him is... well kinda, we all know who was behind that). Nick Santoni, the mobster, is the perfect image of one - he's dark, brooding, and evil. But my favorite was Fleas, a bloodhound that came with an old, rundown truck Jamie bought. Fleas is hairless in spots because of a coon accident, he hates country music and becomes vicious when it's played, and he's just a great dog. He's a highlight in this book!

Even with a weak plot, the story is made by the fun characterization. I'm beginning to see this as a pattern with Evanovich. If nothing else, read FULL SPEED for the fun interaction of the characters.

3 out of 5 stars For those that have the need........2006-12-31

If you have a need to add, subtract, etc. many numbers quickly without the aid of electronic devices: this book will help you. It also might be of interest to mathematics teachers. Otherwise, don't bother: your $4 calculator from the grocery store will do just fine.

1 out of 5 stars it sucks!!!! sorry!!! buy BILL HANDLEY'S FULL COURSE IN SPEED MATHEMATICS.......2005-07-11

I personally find the review very apalling, the good fact of this book is there are lots of drills.I recommend BILL HANDLEY'S full course in speed mathematics for a very simplified straightfowrad approach.THIS book doesn't really teach you a art of calculation, but continuos drills of different calculations.Horrible book don't buy it only if you like to practice continuous drills.garbage!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Rote, rote, rote.......2004-09-24

Being fairly proficient in "mental math", I picked up this book to see if there were any useful techniques for calculating. I was very disappointed.

The author's approach seems to rely primarily on rote memorization and optimizing pencil & paper methods. This is fine if you have pencil & paper handy, but cumbersome if you want to "run a rapid mental check..." as they suggest in their book. Rather than provide new techniques that work for mental computation, the reader is asked to perform endless drills to allow you to mentally perform pen & paper methods.

Another problem is the reliance on memorizing special cases instead of focusing on general-use techniques. If it takes a person 10 seconds to determine which of the dozens of special cases applies to a particular problem, then he does not know "how to calculate quickly"

For example, one of the author's special cases, "Multiplying a Sum by a Difference," actually has a very broad use for multiplying any two integers, but it is presented only briefly as a very narrow application that you will likely never stumble across in real life (e.g. multiplying two integers whose units add to 10 and the tens have a difference of 1)

Overall, the heavy reliance on rote vs. technique makes this an unsatisfying work.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK TO IMPROVE MENTAL CALCULATION.......2000-08-15

I gave it a five star simply because the books is simple and very effective at getting you to learn the "art" of quick calculation.

I looked at all the others in that field. Most of them teach you tricks for quick calculation. To do certain calculation you need to remember the tricks. There are dozen of them and you just get confused. This book do not used trick but teach you "number sense" ... and how to calculate from left to right with complex number. Beleive me, I was affraid of that kind of calculation and with that book I learned a lot!

I used it because I am preparing for interviews in management consulting. Case study need you to do lots of quick mental calculation. I am very good with complex calculation but mental arithmetics is something else.

BUY THIS BOOK ... very slim, but as said before, lots lots of exercise well made and improving in difficulty ... cant say more, its the book I was looking for.

Amusing, it was first published in 1945 ...

4 out of 5 stars I have kept my copy for years.......2000-04-08

and keep going back to it. It is important that a prospective buyer knows this book focuses on MENTAL arithmetic, i.e., no paper. If that is an interest of yours, then this is your book. If you are interested in "shortcuts", there are other books out there (though the last chapter of this book contains some of the more popular ones.) Don't think you can multiply two two-digit numbers in your head? you may be surprised.

1 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily disappointing.......2004-07-27

After having read all of the Stephanie Plumb novels I could get my hands on (and loving them), I decided to see how Evanavich would handle romance AND collaboration with another writer. All I can say is, I'm glad I didn't waste my money on these books but checked them out of my local library. The "Full" series was a huge disappointment. I found the characters flat and undeveloped, the dialogue dull and the plots disjointed and meandering. The "sexual tension" the writers tried to build was ho-hum to the point that I just didn't care if Jamie and Max ever made it together. I think part of the problem here was the collaboration. Clearly, the two authors' styles and vision of Max and Jaimie were not in synch with one another. I'll take Joe Morelli AND Ranger Mancuso over Max any day -- and (no doubt about it) Stephanie or Lula over Jamie. Please, please, Ms. Evanovich, stick to Jersey, stick to Stephanie and her hysterically dysfuctional family. Most importantly, stick to solo writing!

5 out of 5 stars great books to read by the pool!!!.......2004-06-24

I haven't read the "PLUM" books yet so I don't have a preconceived notion about Janet's books. I started the first one, Full Tilt, while on an airplane traveling to Europe and finished it on the ride back. I love it and it made the 7 and 1/2 hours go by more quickly. The next one, Full Tilt, I read at the pool while my children play. It makes the hours sitting in the sun go by quickly. Tomorrow I'm off to the library to get the next book and look forward in drowning myself into Jamie and Max and their adventures. These books are delightful and funny. Just enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Full of Fun.......2004-04-07

This is a great series. The comedy and mystery are a great blend. I love the quirky characters and laugh out loud every couple of minutes when reading these books. Of course the slow burning romamnce between Max and Jamie (introduced in the second book)is also great, but mostly this is light but fun entertainment! This is a different series than the Plum books so don't come with a preconceived notion, and you will just love it.

5 out of 5 stars As good as Plum.......2004-03-18

I can't believe the average rating is so low! These books are great. They are fast-reads and full of charm. They are funny, original, and they keep you guessing until the end. I am a librarian and I highly recommend them!

1 out of 5 stars If you like Stephanie Plum....Don't read these.......2003-12-24

These books are not anything like the Stephanie Plum books from Evanovich's number series (ie. "One for the Money" to "To the Nines"). All these books are romances and not very good ones.

In the first book, "Full House," you are introduced to Max as a child. The romance is not very original, the humor is not very funny and the story doesn't hold much interest. I pushed through, hoping the next book would be better. The second book picks up 20 or so years later with a knight rider car and other science-fiction like products. Instead of getting better, it got more and more ridiculous. I didn't have the heart to pick up the third book.

If you like the humor and characters in her numbers series, stay away from these books. They hold none of Evanovich's charm.

    Book Description

Joe Andoe is an internationally exhibited painter. His work, hailed by The New Yorker as "cowboy noir with a fashionista twist," is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, and countless other locations. He is a father. He is a writer. He is sober. That's now.

Once upon a time, though, way back in the '70s, Joe Andoe was a delinquent bad boy growing up wild in Tulsa, Oklahoma—drinking, drugging, and driving too fast down a dead-end road. He was one car crash, one overdose away from head-on disaster. His art saved him.

A life story told in discrete, arresting snapshots of despair, resilience, creativity, and hope, Joe Andoe's raw, vivid, and utterly original memoir is as striking as his painting. With echoes of Jim Carroll poetic insight and Charles Bukowski grit, yet still uniquely the artist's own, Andoe's literary portrait of his time to date on earth is as powerful as a heavyweight's hook and as spellbinding as a major crack-up on the opposite side of the highway. It is an important work of curiosity and grandiosity; a testament to a young man's resilience and genius and luck that enabled him to survive a life lived wildly out of control; an unparalleled adventure, a rocket ride from the sordid depths of self-destruction to the glorious pinnacles of . . . Jubilee City

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars What's to like about Joe?.......2007-10-09

Andoe is the most mysogynistic, violent, grandiose, obnoxious, self-centered creep I've probably ever read an autobiography by. I didn't know it is possible to objectify women as much as he does. I feel sorry for Andoe's kids, his ex-wife and for any other women he's plied his stoned-bad boy-artist persona on. It's a shame the rest of us have to share the planet with Neanderthals like Joe.
The front cover sports a photo of the author smoking a cigarette. Wow, is he cool and original, or what? (Wish he was *my* dad!)
How can anyone write positive things about the author or the book? Jubilee City is the pathetic rambling of a man who refuses to grow up. Don't reward bad behavior: get the book at the library if you are inclined to read it. And stay tuned for the sequel from this opportunist if he ever wakes up: Remorse City.

    5 out of 5 stars Inmate Inspiration.......2007-10-08

My son is incarcerated and I sent this book to his cell mate who is an aspiring artist. He loved it. He has talent and someday, maybe, we will all be buying JP Kennedy's!
Thank for sharing the story-you never know who'll you will be inspiring to stay straight and focused.

    4 out of 5 stars Oklahoma, Okay.......2007-10-01

Joe Andoe must be fifteen years younger than the artists and poets I'm most familiar with who hailed from Tulsa--the WHITE DOVE REVIEW crew of Joe Brainard, Dick Gallup, Ron Padgett. His book JUBILEE CITY rivals the memoirs of Brainard (I REMEMBER) and Padgett (OKLAHOMA TOUGH, MY FATHER KING OF THE TULSA BOOTLEGGERS) as far as getting the lowdown on one of America's most exciting, durable, and dreamlike city-states. When I picked up this book, out of curiosity towards all things Tulsa, I had never heard of the painter Joe Andoe, and now that I've read it I realize he's one of the most famous artists of the world and he's shown all over the known universe. Somehow he flew under my radar but perhaps I have my head in the clouds or buried in the sand like a West Coast ostrich, what do I know? In any case Joe's childhood was like a real-life version of JT Leroy books, except for one stabliizing factor, his father was a real man's man who didn't say very much but Joe always knew that, no matter how many juvenile shenanigans young Joe got his sorry butt into, there was always going to be one man who had his back, his dad.

The saddest part of the book was when Andoe Sr., a relatively young man, had a heart attack and Joe had to bundle him into the car and drive him to the hospital, simultaneously talking him alive, keeping him going. But I think Mr. Andoe didn't want to stay alive not smoking, having to watch his diet, living as "half a man," and so, it wasn't long before they were carrying him back to his Maker.

Joe's interest in art went into high gear when he found out that his chichi society drawing teacher could sell a drawing or a watercolor for 900 dollars--900, as much as the car Joe was driving cost. "He looked like veal to me, all soft and white." And Joe was skeptical of the teacher's talents, thinking to himself, if his s**t flies, then mine will too. At college he learned about men like Robert Smithson, Dennis Oppenheim, other hipsters like himself, but as he says, it wasn't until he saw one of Warhol's pink Marilyns that art got its hook into him once and for all. The teacher told him he should have more humility but Joe just looks at him sideways and says, "I don't know what that word means--is it like humid?"

He had to deal with rapacious and uncaring dealers who tried dicking him every which way from Sunday, and he wound up with a Smith College alumna girlfriend in NYC who, addicted to heroin, had him breaking into his own kids' piggy banks for nickels and dimes. His brushes with the law were frequent and outrageous, and if you read THE BASKETBALL DIARIES or seen the movie with Leo Di Caprio you will agree with me by admitting that Joe Andoe was the baddest boy in many moon,s but he never lost his soul and he never lost heart. His story further proves the continuing vitality of Tulsa and Tulsans, who include also Garth Brooks, Leon Russell, Gene Autry, and David BREAD Gates in music and, in other fields, Jennifer Jones, John Hope Franklin, Sammy Sosa, Larry Clark, Alfre Woodard, S. E. Hinton who wrote THE OUTSIDERS, and Wes Studi. What do these folks all have in common? They're tough and they're cool, ubercool.

5 out of 5 stars Soul of an artist.......2007-09-28

Reading Joe Andoe's memoir is like walking through a collection of his paintings. Sublime, sensual and haunting. His words reach right into your soul as do his paintings.Unlocking ghosts of distant memories. For anyone who has lived outside the box ,or for that matter looked inside and not quite know how to fit in there is comfort in knowing you are not alone. Loved it.

    5 out of 5 stars Mischief, Art & Redemption.......2007-08-09

So, world-renowned (and successful--which isn't so easy to pull off) artist Joe Andoe has written his memoir. Why do you care? Because Joe grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma - an unlikely breeding ground for an artist. Because Joe grew up misbehaving in all sorts of ways, had more close calls with the law and death than he can count, until he finally moved to New York City to make his name and to find his fame. Joe's voice, as a writer, is like an undertow -- before you know it, you're miles off shore, completely sucked into his world of all-encompassing love (for his children, his painting) and lust (for women, alcohol), as he paints and parents his way to recovery and redemption. The life presented here is one lived on Joe's terms, with sparkling moments of bigheartedness, crazy humor, and poignant regret. I was entranced by his bad boy youth in Oklahoma, full of muscle cars and dewy teenage girls, the insider details of the world of art galleries and agents, and most of all by how he sorted out all his inner demons and rebuilt connections with his family, friends, children.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...I have been a fan of Jack for years and this is really his best work.

I am anxiously awaiting his next work, which I heard he has been working on for the past 70 years.

    5 out of 5 stars inspirational!!!.......1999-05-18

This book should be manditory reading for all high shool students. These true stories inspire, inform and motivate as well as teach endurance and how to overcome all odds.

5 out of 5 stars All in all, a great book!.......1998-02-24

My review is short and sweet. I think this book is all that and a bag of chips. Particularly the chapter about Jonathan Slifka, which was exceptionally wonderful. Of course, I am biased, because I AM Jonathan Slifka! :) I really wish this book were easier to find! (HINT HINT)

      Book Description

      Film/Asian Studies

An original and incisive account of one of the world's most exciting cinemas.

Breathtaking swordplay and nostalgic love, Peking opera and Chow Yun-fat's cult followers-these are some of the elements of the vivid and diverse urban imagination that find form and expression in the thriving Hong Kong cinema. All receive their due in At Full Speed, a volume that captures the remarkable range and energy of a cinema that borrows, invents, and reinvents across the boundaries of time, culture, and conventions.

At Full Speed gathers film scholars and critics from around the globe to convey the transnational, multilayered character that Hong Kong films acquire and impart as they circulate worldwide. These writers scrutinize the films they find captivating: from the lesser known works of Law Man and Yuen Woo Ping to such film festival notables as Stanley Kwan and Wong Kar-wai, and from the commercial action, romance, and comedy genres of Jackie Chan, Peter Chan, Steven Chiau, Tsui Hark, John Woo, and Derek Yee to the attempted departures of Evans Chan, Ann Hui, and Clara Law.

In this cinema the contributors identify an aesthetics of action, gender-flexible melodramatic excesses, objects of nostalgia, and globally projected local history and identities, as well as an active critical film community. Their work, the most incisive account ever given of one of the world's largest film industries, brings the pleasures and idiosyncrasies of Hong Kong cinema into clear close-up focus even as it enlarges on the relationships between art and the market, cultural theory and the movies.

My dad, Erik Arneson, is one of the best writers ever. After reading this book of "Triumphs and Tragedies" you will feel as if you have known Darryl your whole life. This book gets you so interested that you wont want to tear yourself away. I read a good chunk of the book in one sitting. I hope my dad (Erik) writes another highly fascinating story.

5 out of 5 stars A great accomplishment in the realm of personal narrative........1998-12-18

Full Circle was a powerful work of signifigance. Deeply emotional, the book transcends Jansen's extraordinary battle as a parable of every athlete's struggle for personal developement. McCallum weaves an enduring tale that athlete, sports nut, or soccer mom can internalize to better understand the common struggle manifested by sports. More eloquent even than Shaq Attaq, Full circle is an accomplishment of aesthetics and moral comprehension.
