A lost heir, murder most foul, and the unexpected return of two old friends start Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes--spouses and intellectual equals--on an investigation that takes them from the trenches of World War I France to the heights of English society. In this sixth entry in Laurie King's award-winning series, fans will find the Baker Street sleuth mellowed by age and marriage yet still in possession of his deductive abilities and acerbic wit, and, in Mary Russell, a surprisingly apt companion for the legendary detective.
Justice Hall brings back two colorful characters from earlier in the series: Bedouins Ali and Mahmoud Hazr (now known as Alistair and Marsh), who last appeared in O Jerusalem. At their request, Holmes and Russell take up the trail of the doomed heir to Justice Hall, who has been executed for cowardice in the bloody trenches of France. As the detectives strive to make sense of his death and to locate another heir to the family title, an attempt is made on the life of the man who's soon to be welcomed as the new duke. Holmes and Russell soon realize something sinister is afoot, and that they must untangle a web of deceit to discover which of the many suspects is taking steps to shorten the line of inheritance. Once again, King's satisfying tale stays true to the spirit of Conan Doyle's original stories while extending them into new terrain. --Benjamin Reese

Justice Hall.......2007-03-01
There is much to like in "Justice Hall"--evocative descriptions of English landscape and English architecture, domestic and grand; an education on the country house shooting party; the curious overlay of transportation, ancient and contemporary, which marked the post WWI years; the brutal circumstances of trench warfare. But, as with all the Mary Russell novels, a willingness to suspend disbelief is essential--especially if you are a dyed-in-the-wool Sherlock Holmes fan. The plot and characters will otherwise spoil what is in many ways an enjoyable romp (except when King is on the "Shot at Dawn" soapbox, or the overabundant symbolism of the Hall and its beautifully painted dome). Ms. King does her best to instruct readers new to the series on past relationships, but this leads to rather too much backstory. Nevertheless, there is a lot of atmospheric fun to be had keeping Holmes and Russell company.
Truly the best in the series.......2006-08-25
Well-written, perfectly paced, absolutely enthralling! This book draws you in and keeps you absorbed in the mysteries of Justice Hall. What a terrific sequel to O Jerusalem. I've read every book in the Mary Russell series now, beginning at the end with Locked Rooms and then starting from the "real" beginning and moving forward, and this has truly been the gem of an entirely enjoyable series.
Justice Hall (a Mary Russell Mystery) by Laurie R. King.......2006-08-21
This book has to be one of my top favorites in the Mary Russell series. The plot was excellent and the characters well-written. The story unfolded in a lively way without any lag in the middle of the story. It was hard to put it down.
I can highly recommend this book.

Best book of the series.......2006-08-09
This is by far my favorite of the Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russell novels. Laurie R. King's description of Justice Hall as well as the colorful characters contained in it is breathtaking. (I wish I could spend a day in Greene Library!) The mystery itself is compelling and keeps you guessing. There's also a sense of adventure and suspense, like when Mary and Iris travel to Canada to seek out a certain someone. There was a poignant touch of sadness in this book for me. I realize that Marsh/Mahmoud and Alistair/Ali belong in the desert, but... WARNING! SPOILER BELOW!
the scene at the end with Marsh and Gabe is heartbreaking. As much as the reader (well, at least this reader) wants Marsh to stick around and watch his grandson develop, it just isn't in his nature. This is part of the book that stayed with me long after I read it. I couldn't help but think of what would happen next, after the final page. I'd like to think that back in Palestine, Marsh is secretly keeping tabs on young Gabe in Justice Hall using whatever secret methods he has. And Iris will likely make trips back and forth from Paris to check on Gabe, too. I don't usually spend time fantasizing about what fictional characters are doing after I've read the book, so it's a true testament to Laurie R. King's brilliance as a writer. These characters really become a part of you.
Justice Hall is an incredible story on so many levels. I very highly recommend this book to anyone. And for Holmes/Russell fans, it's a must read.
Well Done!.......2006-04-25
Justice Hall is another book in the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series and was, dare I say, one of the most enjoyable yet! Readers should note however that this book will certainly not be enjoyed as much if they have not read the fourth book in the series "O Jerusalem". That book lays the foundation for the returning characters in this story. Laurie King has really outdone herself with this story line. It is compelling as we meet Mahmoud and Ali, but this time in their proper British personnas as Marsh and Alistair. Ali engages Russell and Holmes' help to investigate the strange behavior of his beloved cousin Marsh. Eager to help they all depart for Justice Hall the imperious home of Marsh's family only to find their beloved friend definetly not himself. The mystery begins to unfold and we find the two slueths digging up history to find the truth about an execution, inheritance and general mayhem. There is a great supporting cast of well developed endearing characters and the unfoldment of the mystery is exciting and fufilling. One of the better books in the series and a quick read.

Book Description
The essays in this volume represent some of the best writing done about the history, political dynamics, and legal development of the Supreme Court. They remind us that interest in the court as not just a legal but a political and cultural entity has been prodigious. No other court has attracted anything approaching the scholarly attention on the so-called "Marble Palace" in Washington, D.C. Biographers, such as Bernard Schwartz and G. Edward White, remind us that talent on the high bench has made a difference in the growth of judicial power and in adjusting the Constitution to fit emerging social realities.
The essays in this landmark collection deal with the social controversies that have reached the Court and the ways in which the justices attempted to deal with them and the results of their doing so.
The Supreme Court in American Society serves as a powerful reminder of how important the Court has been to American life, how central a role it has played in interpreting the rule of lawagainst a constantly evolving social order, and how much it has mirrored the controversies, debates, and political struggles of American History.

Fun.......2006-06-10
If you like the animated series, you'll love this book. You'll find every character on every page, every character of the Justice League and Injustice Gang. It even has a few photo shots from the series.
Great fun, but a few more pages would have been great.......2004-09-17
Jason Hall's Visual Guidebook to the animated Justice League is colorful and fun. Tykes should like it. Like all the DK books, great care has been taken in chosing the captions and accompanying text.
It's a great way to introduce the younger readers to the world of the Justice League, though I would have waited a few years until the Justice League Unlimited run had been completed, so the book had a great amount of stories to draw fun. It also goes the extra mile with some pages on Aquaman, the Atom, and Adam Strange.
A few flaws for the completist out there. The info on Hawkgirl is somewhat inaccurate after the revelations in the second season finale, "Starcrossed," the panals are mostly taken from the comics rather than the animated series, and some "fun" pages like a detailed blueprint of what goes where in the Watchtower might have given the little ones a bit more material to chew on.
Again, some material on other characters such as Metamorpho, Darksaid, Dr. Fate, would have been great.
Still, it's fun for what it is. Hopefully DK will produce a few more of these in the years to come.

Customer Reviews:
Drawn out and boring, hard to understand.......2007-05-13
I found Supervision of Police Personnel (6TH) to be pretty much drawn out and boring. It is painfully evident that the same information could have been relayed in a lot less then 400 boring pages. It was difficult to follow and often repetitive. A lot of detail was focused on irrelevant material. This was a difficult book for me to swallow (as a 12 year LEO), but it certainly rated high as a sleep aid for me.
Supervision of Police Personnel.......2007-03-10
It is a very good informational source for anyone that wants to pursue a promotion in police work. The review questions at the end of each chapter are convenient and helpful.
Don't pay for this book..........2006-11-29
Don't spend a dime...borrow it from a fellow Officer. I am a firm believer in capitalism, but these guys are really pushing the envelope. $99.00?! Nathan can keep the book!
Is the content any good? Yes, it is solid, however basic, leadership for Police Officers. But $99.00?! Go read something by Covey...it is a hell of a lot cheaper and far less boring.
Sleeping Material.......2006-11-10
This book is so dry and painful to look at. It's great to look at right before you go to bed to ensure a great nights sleep.
Some good info... but rambling and poorly written.......2006-10-23
This text is required reading for many taking police promotional exams. While there is some good information in it, it is rambling and poorly written. There are some indications that the book is not properly reviewed and edited before each new reprint. I hope the seventh edition is better and ties together the concepts clearly. There are several chapetes that are seperated but could easily dovetail into one. I found a 107 word run-on sentence (p.139), and it was by no means an exhaustive search -- there are many such examples. You can make it enjoyable to a degree by trying to find the number of times "catharsis" and "splendid" appear, but other than that, have your asprin bottle handy. I'd recommend a study guide such as Sgt. Walker recommends, or try to outline the thing yourself. Good luck.

"Elsner provides new insight into the powerful political and social forces driving imprisonment in America. Most importantly, he charts a path for reform ¿ one that could make America not merely more humane, but safer.
Gates of Injustice is a compelling exposé of the U.S. prison system: it tells how more than 2 million Americans came to be incarcerated ¿ what it's really like on the inside ¿ and how a giant ""prison-industrial complex"" promotes imprisonment over other solutions.
Alan Elsner paints a terrifying picture of how our prisons really work. You'll hear how race-based gangs control institutions and prey on the weak¿and how a rape epidemic has swept the U.S. prison system. You'll discover the plight of 300,000 mentally ill prisoners, many abandoned to suffer with grossly inadequate medical care.
Elsner takes you inside ""supermax"" prisons that deny inmates human contact and reveals official corruption and brutality within U.S. jails. You'll also learn how prisons help to spread infectious diseases throughout society ¿ one of the ways the prison crisis touches you, even if you've never had a brush with the law.
- 2 million prisoners: how it happened and why. Why the United States locks away 6-10 times more people than other Western societies.
- The other victims. What it's like for convicts' families left on the outside.
- No place for the sick or weak. Prison medical care: varying from substandard to shocking.
- Life after prison: the realities of parole. What's supposed to happen ¿ and what really happens.
- The ""prison-industrial"" complex: The hidden politics of imprisonment.

A must read for politicians, correctional managers and responsible citizens!.......2007-01-26
GATES OF INJUSTICE
ISBN 0-13-142791-1
By: Alan Elsner
Gates of Injustice is an eye-opening, gut wrenching reality check for any citizen of this country. Federal, state and local tax dollars are being devoured by the billions annually by correctional systems throughout the country. The systems are broken, inadequate, ineffective and in many cases, inhumane.
Alan Elsner has peered over the fences, behind the walls and into the cells in an effort to draw a clear image of how these bureaucratic machines have become the soul crushing money pits feeding upon American humanity.
In one instance after another the systems created to protect communities from the criminal element are clearly failing the public they serve. Many institutions or departments have become crippled by poor policy decisions, insufficient health care, and correctional procedures that actually increase the possibility of future criminal behavior.
These poor correctional practices coupled with our country's "get tough on crime" attitude have continued to provide an endless supply of bodies to feed the machine.
It is an easy thing to point out faults and deficiencies but Alan Elsner's research does provide a select few shining stars that have actually demonstrated positive influences on criminality. The litany of sickening failures is thankfully followed by powerful suggestions for improvements that shed a ray of hope on the bleak landscape.
This book should be required reading for ALL correctional supervisors, politicians at every level and anyone else with an interest in how we as a society are electing to manage and punish crime in America.
A Chilling Expose of the American Penal System.......2006-06-15
Elsner reveals startling truths about the hell to which a citizen of US may be legally doomed. Liberal or Conservative, I recommend this book to anyone worried about his or her freedom - not freedom from Iraq, North Korea, or Islamic militants, but freedom from an out-of-control justice system right here in the homeland.
Elsner provides a wealth of statistics to show when and how we came to live in a "prison nation." Thanks in large part to an ill-conceived war-on-drugs the prison system has grown to monstrous proportions reminiscent of the Military-Industrial Complex against which President Eisenhower warned us. The book is also rich with anecdotes illustrating the system's destructive impact on our prisoners and their families.
You may think of the worst horrors of the dungeons and gulags of the world and comfort yourself with the thought that "it can't happen here."
The bad news: it is happening here.
The good news: Elsner shows us the way reform the system and fight our way back to sanity AND safety.
blatant errors - poor scholarship.......2006-05-24
I picked this book up a couple days ago with a few others, hoping to learn about America's prison system. I think our prison system is horrible and I was hoping that this book would give me some more information on the topic. Unfortunately, in the first twenty pages of the book, Elsner claims that America imprisons 704 people per every 10,000 citizens. If you do the math, that equals 7% of our population. 7% of our population is greater than the population of the State of New York. According to this author, there are more people in prison in this country than live in the State of New York.
Before you get too worried, let me reassure you that this is not the case. America imprisons 736 people per *100,000* citizens (as of 5/06), or .736% of the population. This is the highest rate in the entire world, so there's no need to move the decimal point to make it seem more dramatic. For comparison, Stalin had .771% of his citizens imprisoned in the Gulags during the height of the Purges. Again, there's really no need to exaggerate America's rate of incarceration. What disappoints me is that this error is not simply a typo on one page, but is repeated several times. Apparently the author actually believes we imprison 7% of our population, and the editors at Prentice Hall think that makes sense as well, as do all the luminaries who glowingly endorsed this book on the back cover.
Personally, I can't take anything this author says seriously if there are errors so blatant a novice in the subject can them pick out, on the first twenty pages no less. If a subject as basic as prison population is exaggerated by a power of 10, how do we know the rest of the book isn't off by a power of 10? Elsner makes prison reform advocates look like the bunch of uninformed dreamers conservatives like to imagine. Don't buy this book.
Excellent, just excellent!.......2006-01-30
Well researched, well written and a topic we need to read about. Alan Elsner has shared the real world of prison behind bars to which we subject our neighbors for crimes involving consenting adults or petty thievery. He's shown us that prisons are disease ridden places that are excellent schools for making good people with bad habits into bad people and making `bad people much worse'. He's also brought a very real danger forward in showing us that America is allowing violent felons to remain on the streets because the potheads are taking all the beds. Totally Bas-Ackwards to the goal. States highest in incarceration are also highest in poverty and we are milking the last of life's blood from these people. He's also provided an excellent argument for abandoning the private prison industrial complex and ceasing the attack on urban America and the mentally ill. As someone who works in business and in finance, it bugged my eyeballs when I realized what government is doing, allowing prisoners for profit. I've worked 32 years in a profit driven capacity and doing this with human beings, given what I know about shareholder driven environments, is unconscionable in my mind. To intentionally profit from another's pain and misfortune is heinous. America has 5% of the world's population and 25% of the worlds prisoners. We have over 1,000 prisons and 7 million people under penal control (2004). Over half of them non-violent offenders whose crime involves consenting adults (ie: life in prison for introducing a buyer to a seller of home grown pot in Indiana) or petty thievery (ie: 25 years to life for stealing vitamins in California). Communist China and Russia have less prisoners than we do and China has 5 times the population. We lead the world in per capital incarceration and the shear volume of our population that we incarcerate for long periods of time for victimless crimes.
From Babi-Yar to Angola.......2005-05-19
Jonathan Safran Foer and Alan Elsner are commonly inspired by their Ukrainian travels seeking WWII ancestry info...Foer to write pulsating drama and Elsner to expose human tragedy.
"There but for the grace of God, go I" writes Rush Limbaugh on his drug addictions. Many hundreds of thousands of Americans, however, are in prison today for the possession of one or two ounces of marijuana. A May 2005 page-1 piece in the Wall Street Journal points out that US prison populations have quadrupled to 2+ million Americans since 1980, and it's all about drugs, and much of it is about marijuana.
If the $40 B prison business bothers you...get Alan Elsner's 'Gates of Injustice'
If the 'politics of prisons' bothers you...read Elsner's book.
If recidivism bothers you...buy this book.
If you'd like to hear from the inmates themselves, from the prison guards, from the probation officers, from the police and the judiciary, themselves...read 'Gates of Injustice'.
If you'd like to reach out and advocate for a more sane system with your state-wide Judiciary Committee or Governor, and need more info...I would sincerely & heartenly recommend Alan Elsner's 'Gates of Injustice: The Crisis in America's Prisons'.

Customer Reviews:
I almost envy those of you who've not read this...for the treat you've got to come.......2007-06-02
A hostage situation, set in an old slaughterhouse that is dark and sinister and smells of death. Bad enough already! But to have the hostages deaf children and their teachers was genius as the whole communication aspect is turned on it's head.
I found the characters compelling, even the bad guys!
Having finished it, I feel I have far more understanding of the complexities of a hostage situation and far more insight into the experiences of the deaf.
A thriller that stands out!
A really good book.......2007-05-03
This Book is one of my favorite books I have ever read. I raed this book in two days and I am not a person who reads a lot but this book is so good in my opinion, I gave it to some of my friends and they all read it just as fast as I did if not faster. This book is filled with suspence, action, turns and twist and the plot is really well written. I also really enjoyed the story line it was very intriguing.
One of the best.......2007-03-11
Jeffrey Deaver never ceases to satisfy. As usual I couldn't put it down.
Excellent thriller!.......2007-02-07
This has to be one of the best thrillers i have read; I finished reading it within 24 hours and then couldn't stop thinking about the characters. Even though I didn't find the 'love story' between Arthur Potter and Melanie to be at all credible this didn't spoil the story for me. Highly recommended if you're looking for a good page-turner that makes you think.
No page turner but pretty good........2006-04-03
This was the first Jeffrey Deaver book I read so far and it is only the third book he wrote. I was sceptical if it is worth reading because the plot of a hostage taking did not seem do be really thrilling. It was a pleasant surprise that the book is well written, fast paced with good characters and is not boring at all.
It also had some good twists in between and a surprising ending.
On the other hand it did not really keep me glued to my chair reading for hours.
Also what I did not like was the "love affair" between FBI agent Arthur Potter and the deaf teacher Melanie Charrol since it was not believable, it did not make sense nor contribute anything vital to the story in my opinion.
I wonder how more recent Deaver books are which feature his "normal" main character Lincoln Rhyme. They are said to be very good so I might try one of them in the near future...
