Book Description
Most of the denizens of the Antarctic penguin colony sneer at Fred, the quiet but observant scout who detects worrying signs that their home, an iceberg, is melting. Fred must cleverly convince and enlist key players, such as Louis, the head penguin; Alice, the number two bird; the intractable NoNo the weather expert; and a passle of school-age penguins if he is to save the colony.
Their delightfully told journey illuminates in an unforgettable way how to manage the necessary change that surrounds us all. Simple explanatory material following the fable enhances the lasting value of these lessons.
Our Iceberg Is Melting is at once charming, accessible and profound; a treat for virtually any reader.

Great Tool to Help Explain the Change Process.......2007-09-28
Our organization is currently going through a structure change in one of our divisions. We are using this book as pre-work to attending our training on the change. We've found that having the book as a reference tool has really helped our team leaders relate better to the various stages of change that their team members (and themselves) are going through.
Not only is this book informative but it is also light-hearted, funny and thus, easy to read. Not one person in our organization has said that they did not enjoy reading the book and that they couldn't relate to a character in the book. I would highly recommend it to any organization preparing their team members or team leaders for change.
The most important management skill.......2007-09-18
Kotter & Rathgeber produced an amazing book in a very simple way to make people get deep into the story and to realize the things that happen in their lives, sometimes, without any attention. This book allows people to re-think about theirselves, where they are living and the most important, how to deal with changes. I'm pretty much sure, within all skills, the most important in the past, presently and forever will always be how to lead changes. And this is the right book for learning.
Too simple.......2007-09-17
This book was entirely too elementary. I was expecting some insight into managing change, not a grade school level story.
Great Read.......2007-09-11
Found it to be both entertaining and educational, it's a perfect balance of real world application packaged in an easy to read book. I would pickup Leading Change for more information on the items that are discussed in this book.
Our Iceberg is Melting.......2007-09-07
Excellent and fast read. Anyone in a leadership position will love this book. All of the key characters in your organization are exemplified on the "ice".

A Dark Ugly Book.......2007-09-28
"Pimp" is a dark, ugly book. It's author Robert Beck, aka Iceberg Slim spent much of his life as a pimp. It's written to leave a bad taste in your mouth. That is the intent of the author. This is a chronicle of how he wasted twenty-five years of his life.
Maya Angelou's brother told her a pimp is one of two kinds of men. Either he hates women or he fears women. The process of encouraging, enforcing a woman to sell her body is neither sexy or romantic. The life of a hooker, especially one working the streets is harsh and degrading. A `good' pimp only cares about using his women until they have no more left to give. Only someone who hates or feels the need to control women would make a `good' pimp.
Iceberg Slim hated women.
His father deserted them while he was a baby. Bobby and his mother lead a hand-to-mouth existence for his early years. Early on he is sexually abused by his babysitter. Stability came into his life when his mother marries an older man who was a successful businessman. Young Bobby loved his stepfather. They lead a comfortable upper middle-class existence until his mother runs off with another man.
The image of his stepfather crying in the street begging his mother to stay is repeated throughout the book. He took his hatred of his mother out on women - as a pimp.
Of course things go down hill for his mother. Eventually she gets her act together. But even though stability is restored in his life, Robert wants to be a pimp. Possessing a superior I.Q. (175), he was a straight-A student. In a time of blatant racial discrimination (the 1920s, 30s, 40s) he is given a college scholarship. But his path is set, the seeds of hatred planted years before take root and flourish.
For more details about his descent into depravity and his redemption - read the book.
His writing style is not polished. His language is not refined. But his imagery is stunning. He induces mood and feeling brilliantly. Mood and feeling are enhanced by his lack of polish.
The reader may have trouble with his slang. It's been out of style for 80 years. For example, "vines" means clothes. A woman "georgias" a man when she uses him for sexual gratification without paying. A "square" is a cigarette, etc.
I have noticed a disturbing trend. The black pimp is a role-model for some segments of society. Performers such as Ice-T extol the pimp lifestyle. Iceberg Slim is 'the man'. Whenever this book is discussed as a movie project, the gangsta rappers start lobbying for the part. These guys want to be like him. But not the man he became but the man he was - a depraved parasite. Some of them talk about this book as though it's the Bible.
While this is an excellent book, it is ugly. Richard Beck wanted it that way. He wanted to send a message against pimping and it's lifestyle.
Sometimes I wonder if these pimp wannbes can read.
Pimp.......2007-09-23
I just finished reading this book for the second time, cover to cover in 2 days this time, it is possibly one of the best books I have ever read and keeps you enthralled throughout the whole read.Everyone should read this book because it really gives an insight into a world that most will never see.I have read all of the man's books and this is by far his best work although Mama Black Widow and Trick Baby are up there as well they just don't equal this masterpiece. They only have a 5 star rating but if I could this book would rate 10 stars.
Vivid and raw but dated and bumpy.......2007-09-05
Wanted to like this book better than I did. I was hoping for something great but instead found the tale merely lurid.
Iceberg Slim's tale of pimping in and around Chicago in the 40s is raw and vivid. His life is twisted and he revels in showing us its brutality.
If there is moral clarity anywhere here it must be at the end. I ground to a halt after 75 pages of beatings, betrayals, kinky sex and drug use. The 40s ghetto slang is almost impenetrable at places, a fact acknowledged by the publisher's placement of an (inadequate) dictionary at the end of the book.
Far and away the best of the pimp books.......2007-08-30
Isn't it funny how pimps and pimping are totally mainstream pop culture terms and attitudes among young people these days? From multitudes of 18 year old white boy "pimps" on Myspace, to several HBO documentaries about pimps, to grown white men saying things like "keep your pimp hand strong" and dressing up as parody pimps trying to be funny (this has to be the most tired joke on the planet at this point) to Uncle Toms like Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent doing their modern day minstrel show on Mtv, to those who have "game", the con artists, deceivers, and criminals being the heroes to a good portion of the black community. Those enlightened social engineers and producers of our pop culture sure do enrich our society don't they!?!?
I also notice there are multiple books about pimps and "how to be a pimp" type books on Amazon which at casual look seem so ridiculous that they almost seem to be comedic parodies reminding me of those books written for losers that tell you how to bed beautiful women. If you want a good laugh just read some of the Amazon reviews of the pimp books.
Excluding Magic Don Juans book which is somewhat entertaining Iceberg Slims book is probably the only one worth reading and is head and shoulders above any other books by or about pimps. He doesn't try to glorify himself or being a pimp and while he does give glimpses in the life of being a pimp, drug addict, criminal and eventual prison inmate this book is just as much a self analysis for him as a look into that lifestyle. He states most of the stuff that he experienced and did matter of factly but you get a feeling that writing this book served as therapeutic introspective for Robert "Iceberg Slim" Beck. He does a good job of showing what a scumbag he was but he doesn't get preachy or come off as an attention seeker. Its like he took a step back and made an appraisal of what he once was and put it down on paper. He does a good job of painting a picture of the times in which all this occured and situations he was in. I have to be fair and give the guy credit he really was a good writer.
Good But Underwritten.......2007-02-20
This is a very entertaining, fairly informative novel that is worth the read, particularly if you have a novice interest in the subject matter. The problem I have is that some important aspects of Slim's "life story" are too sketchily described. He writes in sufficient detail about the lessons he learned on how to pimp (from Macks he befriended). He effectively pulls you into the story with his vivid anecdotes of the drug abuse, crosses and petty crime that plague urban street life. He goes into the life of a prison convict. Although it's set in the early 20th century, it doesn't read back as dated even with some of its old-fashion slang. It has a contemporary, almost timeless feel which I appreciated. It also has its fair-share of humor and I found myself laughing several times.
But as stated before, it's glaringly underwritten in many places. All of the female characters lack clear personalities traits; this is even true for women he had for many years like "The Runt", Chris, and Rachel. They should've been made more dimensional and distinct from each other if only to provide a more beneficial read. It also would've been intriguing if Slim had depicted the daily life of his stable, to show what being a part of that group was like and how they interacted and co-existed. I realize that the book is entitled "Pimp" but the lives of his ASSETS, on the streets and off, were never described. It almost leads me to believe that Beck had no clue about that part of the life, and that raises my misgivings.
It's also just a little too convenient that he never turns out a normal but troubled, fresh square with finesse and true manipulation. Every woman he cops is a brainless nymphomaniac who's already in the game to begin with (or headed there anyway) and all too happy to work for him after a weak rap or a nasty reproach. To me this is just uninspired and not wholly credible.
While his youth in the first half is painstakingly detailed at a steady pace, some parts of his life in the second half were rushed that shouldn't have been, like his endeavor to get off of heroin. That takes up only about a page. The circumstance of a love-struck girl bent on murdering him is almost mentioned in passing. I would've rather read about these things than about his Tuskegee years or his Georgia affair with the cop's mistress. I saw a lot of wasted potential with this book. As good as it was, it could've been even better- a definitive masterpiece.
All that being said, it's recommended for being intelligently written, somewhat informative, and above all entertaining. Read if you are curious about the subject matter and like hard-boiled, unapologetic fiction.

Customer Reviews:
Dirk Pitt in Iceland.......2007-07-20
I enjoy Clive Cussler novels as a light, refreshing adventure for a summer afternoon at the beach. The action can be a bit outrageous at times, but usually on the same level as a James Bond plot. After I devoured Iceburg, I happened to look at the copyright page and I was stunned to see it was from 1975. I think the storyline holds up well over the 30+ years since it was written and that the style of Dirk Pitt has not changed overly much. While other reviewers have said that this novel does not represent the other Dirk Pitt adventures, I myself don't see overly much variation. Start the book with the idea that you're reading a light adventure instead of a chilling ultra-accurate thriller and I think you'll have a lovely few hours of suspended disbelief.
Blood & Guts.......2007-07-08
Cussler's non-fiction is good, but his fictional hero, Dirk Pitt, takes and hands out too much punishment for my taste. After reading three of his books, I've had enough
Enjoyable Read !.......2007-05-31
This is my first Clive Cussler book I have ever read. Definitely odd, as I have been reading all my life. I am starting to read my father's book collection, and this is the first Cussler book I pulled.
I did not know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the plot from the beginning, even though some things are a bit far-fetched, but where would the fun be if it was not fiction.
Dirk Pitt is a great character, and I often found myself silently rooting for him. Clive painted the picture enough for me, to envision the Atlantic to Iceland to Disneyland. When I first read they were going to Disneyland, I was, "huh?"... However, I could see in my mind exactly where Clive took us in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride ! Very cool!
I do not know much about Cussler's writing, but I will be reading more!
Amazing Book of Massive Proportions.......2007-05-19
This book is a very good read. I have been a fan of Clive Cussler for some time now and none of his books have ever disappointed me. Iceberg is no exception. Dirk Pitt must find out the connection between a missing sea mineral probe and the appearance of a Russian fishing trawler incased in an iceberg. Along the way he discovers a plot that would rock the world if it succeeds. It immediately grabs your attention and never lets go. You will find it incredibly hard to put this book down. It's a thrill ride full of international conspiracy and many plot twists. The climax was amazing and happens in the least likely place imaginable. I have read many other NUMA books by Cussler and they have all filled the need for intensity and excitement that I crave. If you are already a fan of Cussler's works, this will be a great addition to the books you have already read, but if you are new to Cussler then you will be addicted instantly. This book won't help solve world hunger or stop terrorism, but the people who read it would find incredible joy in this book.
Neat Read.......2007-04-06
Essentially, the burnt remains of a luxury yacht are trapped within an iceberg in the North Atlantic ocean. Aboard this vessel was not only one of the world's wealthiest men, but very rare cargo as well. The only true clue as to the identity of the charred corpses are the ornate rings of the owner. The significance and details of the disaster are a task for the one and only Major Dirk Pitt.
There was something very different and quite positive about this book, and that was a very strong beginning. Not only did it immediately catch the reader's attention, but it shifted in a way that the reader least expected. Excellent character development took root in the first few pages and the personalities of several amusing and creative characters were established. It was a shame they did not last for much longer in the book (having served their role by finding and marking the iceberg), giving away to the actual storyline and main characters, but even so, all the characters had distinct personalities that were well developed.
Iceberg's ability to hold ones attention was magnificent. Nearly everything was described in vivid detail, and the word choice was in very good taste. I really enjoy books that can paint a picture in one's mind, and that draw the reader into the story as if they were a bystander. I just couldn't wait to find out what would happen next and what purpose the newly found clue would serve in the puzzle to unravel the Yachts secrets. I know of several ways in which the storyline could have been improved, but I couldn't resist falling for the classic idea behind our tactical hero Dirk Pitt, the villianess, and the overall mystery. The domino effect of danger and suspicion, as well as the complexity of new characters with something new to offer the story as it progressed were brilliant.
However, there existed three fault points that hindered the quality of the storyline.
This book was written in 1975. With that in mind, the three mistakes are as follows.
Iceberg was very homophobic and did not do women any justice at that as well. But this did not do much damage as a whole when one takes into account the date at which the book was published. Had this been the only flaw, Iceberg would still have received a perfect score from me.
The second error were the several events that degraded Dirk Pitt as a hero. His running about Iceland and surviving by chance in a few occasions was hardly heroic. And the end battle between himself and the enemy was not only quick, but hardly under favorable circumstances (regarding the storyline and Pitt). Compared to the detail provided in other fights scenes, what should have been the greatest of them all was disappointing. However, the final struggle is only one example of the weak points in the book to that effect. Another was the Poetry Reading. The whole event was done swiftly and due to that, quite poorly. In my opinion it was hardly the time and place (as well as the situation) to boil down the chaos and differentiate the villains from the good folk.
The third and most crucial of all Cussler's mistakes were the little odd events and situations littered about the book. Throughout the book itself not much occurs, but the Government's knowledge of what Pitt worked so hard to learn... and Pitt showing no mercy did much more harm than good. But the ending just took it all away. While it was creative to end things as follows:
Spoiler:
Dirk requires one of the main Villains to maintain good relations with NUMA {Nation Underwater and Marine Agency for which Pitt is employed}
The ending turned out awful! The villianess whose personality and actions were proper considering the role, and whose descriptions were so eloquent (one would imagine her looking very pretty) ... turns out to completely DESTROY the whole idea of the book! COMPLETELY destroys it.
It isn't a Villainess at ALL! It is a guy who gets a sex change and pretends to be the sister he never had!!! And all of this is told on the last page of a very good book.
That took it from a Five to nearly a three on my scale. It is rather tragic though, because Iceberg was a real page turner and it was a very funny book at that. I fell in love with the people and their struggle to the end - which actually turned out to eliminate their entire purpose. What a shame. The Villaness was such a classic idea. Ruined!

Book Description
Iceberg Risk exposes this crucial limitation through an engaging mixture of story charts, and math. Statistical concepts are developed intuitively first, and all algebra is cordoned off into neatly organized and digestible nuggets. The results will appeal to students of risk analysis and seasoned practitioners alike; indeed to anyone willing to question orthodox portfolio theory.

Trouble Getting Through.......2006-03-10
I'm having some trouble getting through some of the proofs. I studied Chemical Engineering and Finance. If you can accept things this book is good. If you are the kind of person that needs to prove everything it will take a long time to read.
Good read, not priced well ;-).......2004-07-10
I really enjoyed this book. I don't believe that my review can add much value on top of the other reviews, but maybe I can entice a few of you to buy it.
I have read the book twice now, which I think is required (at minimum) to really absorb everything. I see that Aaron's review got 2 out of 5, and I am a bit perplexed, because his is succinct and accurate. Oh well, you can't win 'um all. One pro is that the book is written in an entertaining way. Half the chapters are a story with a lesson, and the other half is math. Together they read like some popular books that are out now, like Havil's "Gamma", or "Euler" by Dunham: it reads like a book, but with equations everywhere. It is the half way point between a publication and a novel. If you are a masters in finance or an MBA, with no real math background, this might be distracting and halting, but to a quant it should cut like butter.
My only complaint, and this might not be a complaint but, rather, an aversion to suspense, is that there are certain thoughts that aren't completed. As interesting as the read is, I feel like it is almost a cliffhanger; baiting for books to come? I don't think this was deliberate. Some thoughts, while they began with fireworks, just petered out.
Also, it is a bit expensive but, hey, most of us aren't paying for this and, at a minimum, writing it off ;-) (Sorry to any students out there, I owe you a drink)
A Fresh & Imaginative Approach to Risk Management.......2003-05-01
"Ignorance is Blight"... Devlin Advogado's scrawled message across his desk left me with an unsettled feeling, similar to the one I had a long time ago while reading Robert Pirsig's 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'. Perhaps academic research will someday quote from Kent Osband's 'Iceberg Risk' (New York: Texere, 2002), much as Richard Roll, in his famous 1977 Critique of tests of the CAPM, quoted from Pirsig. Osband endeavors to help us avoid blight in this enlightening and entertaining story as we follow supersharp risk analyst Devlin and his pragmatic manager, Conway Wisdon, on a wild ride through the world of investment banking risk management.
But Iceberg Risk is more than a novel; indeed, it is really two books in one: each chapter covers the intuition of its subtopic first, through the clever device of Devlin and Conway's saga within Megabucks Investment Bank; and then delves more directly into the mathematics. Of the math, the reader is encouraged to explore "about as much or as little as you want", a feature I especially appreciated given my low-calorie mathematical diet. And, just as the novel part is an entertaining read, the quantitative part is a useful summary of the mechanics of portfolio management theory.
Part I of Iceberg Risk covers the statistics of probability, covariance and correlation, Pascal's triangles and Bernoulli variables, IID versus non-IID estimates of tail risk, Tchebyshev's inequality, the Kuhn-Tucker conditions for the solution to a Lagrangean optimization, mixtures of discrete and continuous probability measures, De Finetti's theorem, the problems with VaR and the ubiquitous (in finance) normality assumption, and even computer sex (read the book!). Osband gives us a quick introduction to matrix math (though it is even more sparse than the helpful section in Markowitz' 1959 book) before concluding the first half of the book with conditional multivariate normality.
Part II of Iceberg Risk offers a unique and thoughtful approach to overcoming the deficiencies of standard risk assumptions for portfolio management. In this part of the book Osband covers convex and nonconvex utility, regret aversion, choice theory, the appraisal ratio of Treynor-Black and even delves into the Bayesian approach to statistics. Partition functions are introduced as a method of combining conditional return distributions with multi-regime risk aversion. Without resorting to Monte Carlo simulation techniques, Osband proposes a numerical approach to generating risk estimates, since there is no closed-form equation available to solve the issue. He even shows how to account for options and other nonlinear payoff assets.
Osband's approach to risk management is fresh and appealing. It would be worthwhile reading for risk managers and portfolio managers. One aspect I liked very much about his writing style is that the characters represent very distinct human traits, much like those of another of my favorite authors, Ayn Rand. For example, we are introduced to the concept of regret aversion when Conway meets Regretta:
"He spun around to see a raven-haired woman dressed in black. She was beautiful, but with the saddest eyes Conway had ever seen. `Pardon me for eavesdropping,' she said, `But if Dr. Know-nothing can't help you, maybe I can.' `Go away, Misery Girl,' snapped Devlin. `We don't need you.' `Oh, I think you do,' she said... `Now here's what I think you need to do. First measure every outcome in terms of its gross percentage return... Second, square that return and take the negative inverse. Third, form the probability-weighted average of the various negative inverses. Fourth, pick the portfolio that generates the highest probability-weighted average. Am I being clear?' Devlin and Conway were blown away. `She does math,' mumbled Devlin to himself."
Osband makes the observation that "The mainstream seems less interested in managing risk than the appearance of risk." Readers of Osband's Iceberg Risk might just become a bit less mainstream for the reading.
A book for all seasons.......2002-11-04
Iceberg risk describes in clear terms the financial risk that is missed by standard techniques. It is essential reading for anyone in financial risk management, as well as anyone interested in the quantitative reason for extreme financial events. It is an entertaining novel that gives a realistic picture of how risk management works in real institutions, a rigorous and original work of mathematics and a solid textbook that builds results step-by-step from basic algebra. This triple nature makes the book suitable for everyone from mathphobes to serious quants.

Introduction to Systems Thinking

Book Description
A group of enterprising penguins with a yen for juicy clams teams up with some walrus colleagues to harvest aseemingly endless supply for all. The good news attracts penguins and walruses from icebergs far and wide who join in the work and the delectation. But on the way to establishing a clam lovers' paradise, territorial skirmishes arise, clumsy walruses flatten penguins, and confusion reigns.
Can the penguins discover the hidden connections that have turned spiraling success into frustration and social upheaval? Only when they learn to see what is invisible are they able to stop their paradise from unraveling and take steps to creat sustainable prosperity.
The Tip of the Iceberg vividly illustrates how organizations can be trapped by systems when they fail to understand them. The story and discussion guide will help managers sort through the complexity of surface-level events and discover how to take effective actions that create the results they desire.

The Tip of the Iceberg.......2006-02-23
It's an easy book to read, which can be used to get people think about their actions. I have used it to encourage my team to start thinking in other loops.
The message in the book is very clear.

Iceberg Slim tells the story of a blue eyed, light haired, white skinned Negro called "White Folks" He was the most incredible con man the ghetto ever spawned!
Customer Reviews:
Unbelieveable.......2007-01-14
I find it stunning that a black pimp (the author, Iceberg Slim)can take you inside the mind of a racially-mixed con man (protagonist, White Folks) in a time period where race where was a central issue of daily life. There is such an authentic feel to this book that it's hard to believe it's fiction. If you've never read Iceberg Slim before, prepare yourself for an up-close look at a world that most people don't even know exists. Urban culture as popularized by music and movies today has never been as glamorous as Snoop Dogg would have you to believe it is.
The fact that Iceberg Slim never enters popular lists of great American authors like Twain and Hemmingway is a shame. He's truly extraordinary. This book, as well as other Iceberg Slim novels, takes a look at the true feelings and struggles of the urban underworld. I would NOT recommend this book to readers under fourteen years of age.

excellent read.......2005-08-14
I loved reading Trick Baby. I read it within 24 hours, so whoever said it is slow I would have to disagree with. But let me warn you, it was a very, very depressing story. Do not buy this book unless you are prepared to have your heart ripped out! I won't give you a plot summary, but this is a story that deals with issues of love, lonliness and deciet. There are two types of people in the world: those who con and those who get conned. Overall, the book is bleak (antithesis of heart-warming) but very enlightening and entertaining. I would profoundly affected. Highly recommended.
VERY SLOW!.......2003-08-23
THIS BOOK WAS GOOD ONCE IT FINALLY GOT TO THE POINT! THE BOOK WAS A SLOW DRAG THAT MADE YOU WONDER IF IT WAS EVER GOING TO COME TO AN END. I FELT KIND OF SORRY FOR WHITE FOLKS. HE WENT THROUGH ALOT BUT NEVER GAVE UP. I WILL READ ANOTHER ONE OF THE AUTHOR BOOKS BUT IF THE BOOK IS A SLOW AS THIS ONE WAS, I WILL BE DONE READING BOOKS BY HIM! I WANTED TO LIKE THIS BOOK SINCE HE INSPIRED 1 OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS TO WRITE (DONALD GOINES). WHAT'S FUNNY IS THAT HE INSPIRED DONALD GOINES AND TURNS OUT DONALD GOINES IS BETTER! THIS BOOK WAS JUST TOOOOOOO SLOW!
Excellent Reading for the Less Informed.......2002-03-13
...Equipped with a slang term dictionary, this book has me spoiled.
It was good to take a break from the... "Sister-Sister-Fan-Me-At-The-Mall-Dissappearing-Blues-Aint-Like-Mine-Acts" sagas...
Truly poetry in motion as Ice Berg took me through the slums and gutter of the con game.
I truly fell in love with all "Trick Baby" characters as I learned more and more about concentrated 'White is Right' and Blue-Black phrases with no in betweens, amazingly how it applies to my world today, and frankly how somethings never changes.
This book is humorous and truly a gem. When it came to a close, I couldn't put it down, in awe that it was over, fiending for the next Robert Beck novel. So sorry I'd waited so long to get access to the spoken word of Iceberg.

Trick Baby.......2001-01-02
In this story we get to see Johnny O'Brien grow up to a teen with his black mother named Phala. His father is white and was not around to raise him. Johnny looks white but is raised in a ghetto type neighborhood. When he is a teen his mother is gang raped and put into a mental institute. This is where the story really begins, when Johnny meets a guy street named "Blue" because of his dark skin. He takes Johnny under his wing as a partner in the con game and teaches it to Johnny. Blue street names Johnny "White Folks". Blue's whole life is "Con" and he believes that with a black partner who looks white he will be able to run the con on a larger group of people. Which turns out to be true, I had a good time reading about the different ways that they conned people and all their trials along the way. The book is comical in some parts. Blue really takes on a fatherly role for "White Folks" as his relationship with his lesbian daughter is not as close as he would like. I liked being taken to a whole different world while reading this book. Late 50's early 60's. The way they talked the slang and the price's of things - I really loved this book. White Folks and Blue go through a lot of drama - that they bring on themselves. I do recommend this book. I am looking forward to reading the sequel "Long White Con"

5ht grade Teacher--My class loved it!.......2007-07-28
Excellent class novel. Full of adventure and appeals to all kids who love to imagine having a wild animal as a pet. This book is a jewel.
A great surviver story.......2002-11-14
One of the best books I have read in the past year has to be "The Ice burg Hermit, by Arthur Roth. It is a marvelous book about a man who finds a way to survive in the cold. One of the major reasons I enjoyed this book so much is that it is full of action . The ice berg hermit is trying to survive in the cold depths of the seas. Another reason I enjoy this book and found this book to be so wonderful but suspenseful. He fights polar bears and you never know when a polar bear comes to kill Allen. Of course my favorite reason for having this book is, that it is full of action. The best action part in the book is when he tries to swing to the iceberg to save his life and almost dies. As for as I am concerned Author Roth hit the nail on the head of this book
Must-Read.......2001-12-09
I had a very smart and very good teacher in grade school. We had to read a certain amount of books each year, and some we HAD to read as a class so we could discuss them. The Iceberg Hermit was one of them, and I have to say that it was one of my favorites of the must-read stories we had to pick from, right up there with Bridge to Terabithia, Tuck Everlasting, Mrs. Mike and Where the Red Fern Grows.
I had lost my copy years ago, but thought of it again recently. So I was pleasantly surprised that it was still in print. I remember how my imagination soared, trying to picture the main character stranded in the middle of nowhere. I was transported to another place and time, and 20 years after reading the book, I can still remember it vividly. If you are looking for some good reading material for your children, this will NOT disappoint.
cool book.......2001-09-25
I liked this book alot because in the most unthinkable ways Alan overcomes many ordeals and ends up surviving the arctic cold on an iceberg. In many cases Alan is almost killed and eaten by polar bears. I enjoyed the aurthers vivid discription of the land, and climate, and how the charehter feels in the story. In many ways I think this book is non-fiction because Alan keeps a pet polar bear. I recomend this book to all outher readers.
The book that will change the way you think of survial........2001-05-23
This book is the best survial book I've ever read. It's one of those books you never want to put down. From the beginning when the ship wrecks to the end there's nothing but excitment all the way though. This book will show you yhat no matter what happenes if you want to survive you will- no matter the odds. So take it from me,this an awesome book any day.

A Marvelous Wonder of Nature........2006-12-08
Icebergs are made up of freshwater, formed over centuries from snowfall which didn't melt. Over time, they are compressed into ice. The majestic glaciers did not form from the oceans surrounding them, which are salt water. Icebergs are the chunks which broke off from the high glaciers and gloat out to sea.
Pack Ice is composed totally of saltwater and composes ninety-five percent of the ice found in the oceans of th polar regions. Pack ice drifts on the surface of the sea and a single piece is known as a floe. On the beaches there are hugh mounds of saltwater ice joined to freshwater ice. It is thought that the Artic winds push the pack ine to the shore where it gets contained. Though the ocean and the seas are made up of saltwater, the icebergs and glaciers are composed of freshwater ice. An amazing phenonomon from Mother Nature.
A GOOD BOOK FOR LATER ELEMENTARY.......2000-03-30
This was a good book but I would not recommend it for kids ages 4-8. It was quite verbous. It was very informational, however, and a good source to use in the classroom.

Customer Reviews:
Iceberg delivers his most personal novel!.......2004-01-07
Although its not the most memorable of Ice's releases. I mean how could you ever top the rawness of PIMP or the drama of Mama's Black Widow, but if you really read this book you will see the sad and vulnerable side of this 'strong' man. I enjoyed the book, the most touching parts of the book were the letter to his Papa, his rap of the pimp game, and the one that stuck with me the most was the story of his goddess. I had to take a break after reading that one. I felt his pain every brutha has had their heart broken. Powerful stuff!! Also Ice explores the relationship with black males and white women and white males and black women. Ice says the things we are all afraid to say. He definitely invites you into his world and it will forever remain etched in your mind.Great novel. I'm only 16, but after 30+ years I can still relate to this late brutha he was a pure ghetto genius only person that ever came as close to him in ghetto story telling was Tupac.
the truest stuff he ever wrote.......2001-10-27
i love this novel, slim gets, real in this very personal, who said slim cries too much, the man was just remeniscing over events of his life, especially the life of a black man trapped in the darkworlds of the underworld, berg describes the hell every black man must go through,in his excistence-pure hell, he describes what a pimp must do to stay ahead of the game, i liked how he told that young dude the real deal about pimping, and that he has tremendous odds against him, yes kiddies not anyone can be a pimp, do not let bet,or mtv, fool you learn the real deal before you get shot-like iceberg warned that particular fellow, who learned that a good whore is always in demand as some italian quickly scooped his girl, then the letter slim wrote to his daddy was deep, then we learned about melvin x, the black panthers, who slim called heroes, there's holly one of berg's old associates who became famous and forgot whewre her roots were, what really got me interested was the uncle tom issue, and how whites create this type of character in america he said the word hope is used to control the blacks of america, then i liked the way berg wrote of why white women date black men, we all heard about those old black penis myth-but this is bryond that, and how black women really deal with white johns in the street, who love critizing, and trying to outlaw prostitution, drugs but are the biggest freaks in america i will not say the names of those who puff and not inhale, or claim that they are somebody, but this is reality, the truest black book ever made besides the nigger bible, definetly a must have, then i like the weay berg adressed that young writer, about what kind of writer he wants to be, and even that berg writes he still catches hell.
No Slim.......2001-10-11
I am a Iceberg fan, but I just didn't like this book. It didn't catch me. I have began reading it on several occasions, but never seem to finish. I am sure that other Beck fans will enjoy this novel.
Iceberg Slim Describes His World.......2000-08-13
In "The Naked Soul Of Iceberg Slim" Robert Beck (street-named Iceberg Slim) tells stories from his life. Mr. Beck describes his anger and resentment at white society's treatment of black people. He describes his dealings with the Black Panther Party and his admiration for the young Black Panthers.
Mr. Beck dedicated this book to a number of black luminaries including Malcolm X. Mr. Beck also mentions Malcolm X. I compared this book to "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" by Malcolm X and Alex Haley (co-author). Mr. Beck discusses white society's racism and writes about revolutionary solutions to racism. Early in his life Malcolm X also sought revolutionary solutions to racism. After his visit to Islamic North Africa, however, Malcolm X proposed a different solution: a strong, black-owned and black-operated economy coexisting peacefully with the rest of society. Mr. Beck does not discuss Malcolm X's later-proposed solution.
This is an interesting book. It is clearly-written, and Mr. Beck has led an interesting life.
"Melted Ice".......2000-05-09
This book is a warmer side to the pimp saga. The iceberg is melted away and the heart of Robert Beck is revealed. This book in some ways is stronger than his first book "Pimp" but falls short in other areas. I recommend first "Pimp" then "The Naked Soul of Iceberg Slim".
