Book Description

“Swing just might be the best historical thriller of the year. Certainly it is the most creative.”
–Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

In the swinging big band era, jazz saxophonist and arranger Ray Sherwood is haunted by personal tragedy. But when Gail Prentice, a beautiful and talented Berkeley student, seeks his help in orchestrating an original composition slated to debut at the newly created Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, Ray is diverted from his worries and drawn to the beguiling coed. Within moments of their first meeting, however, Ray witnesses a horrifying sight: a woman plunging to her death from the island’s emblematic Tower of the Sun.
Ray soon finds himself trapped in a coil of spiraling secrets in which nothing is certain, including Gail’s intentions toward him and her connection to the dead woman. And as events speed toward the shocking climax, Ray must unlock an ominous puzzle with sinister implications that stretch far beyond anything he could imagine.

4 out of 5 stars Good history, not quite so good mystery.......2007-05-06

This is a hard one to pin down. It's billed as a mystery. I know this because it says so on the cover. But the mystery is very secondary to virtually everything else that goes on. And though it is hinted at early on it is lost for much of the book and only resurfaces very near the end, with a few intimations of it along the way.

Ray Sherwood is a musician and arranger in a traveling swing band in 1940. He's running from many things, but mostly from himself, something we all learn sooner or later we cannot really do. The band he plays with comes to Oakland, across the bay from the San Francisco World's Fair on Treasure Island, just before World War II or at least the U.S. entry into that fray. Ray is offered an arranging job by a beautiful and talented young woman. And this arrangement, both the musical arranging and the relationship with the young woman turn out to be more than initially meets the eye. Another young woman dies near the beginning of the story, but we don't know how she fits in until much, much later. I think this sort of a teaser or hook, the way movies and TV use the same device. And, of course, since we're on the eve of World War II we have Japanese and Nazi spies and nobody is what they appear to be. Unfortunately we've seen much of this before in books and movies. Alfred Hitchcock, were he still alive, could no doubt make a good movie of this book.

Even though the mystery aspect of the story is secondary, I was intrigued by the characters, the Treasure Island location and bits of history, music tidbits and the era in which the story is set, etc. All of this kept my interest throughout. There were, however, too many coincidences that just stretch the limits of credibility. Because of that the climax was a little bit disappointing.

Even though I enjoyed this novel for the most part, I am giving it four stars instead of five. Why? Because of the false advertising. This is a mystery only loosely and what there is of the mystery is largely contrived and too coincidental, though the main conceit with the music is an interesting and unusual one. But it is a good portrait of the era. Had the mystery been more prominent (and a little less contrived) or the word mystery not been so prominent on the cover I would give it five stars. So let's say four and a half, even though I can't give it that extra half.

5 out of 5 stars It made me want to have longer commutes.......2007-03-08

I listened to the audio book in the car and it is fantastic. I wanted to drive all the time. I can't believe the author is the Pina Colada guy.

I'm one of those people who hate suspense and I looked everywhere for the spoiler, so here it is.

!!!!!!!SPOILER HERE!!!!!!!!

The score for "Swing Around the Sun" is actually a code to the Japanese about converting Treasure Island to a Naval base.

Adeline Head is actually the girl that fell off the tower. Martha kills her because she decifered the code.

Gail is not Ray's daughter. Martha knew about the reed because they went through his wallet when he got arrested.

Martha is not Gail's mother either. Martha is the main spy. She tells Gail to help her so she could be reunited with her real father in Germany.

Marie assumes Adeline's identity, but she later dies assuming Martha's identity. Martha swapped her dental records since she works at the doctor's office.

Martha kills Vera, stealing her passport to go to Mexico. But she gets caught.

Ray and Nancy get back together. They later have a son.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice book.......2006-08-17

I hope that if they make a movie of it they do it justice. :)

4 out of 5 stars A fun fast read........2006-07-04

I ordered this book initially because I love his music. What a wonderful surprise when I opened it and stepped into a different time and place. The detail was wonderful and the story kept me guessing until the reveal. I found out quite a bit about the industry, and the expo that I never knew. The characters are well crafted and you care enough about them to wonder about their backstory and their future. No spoilers here, you'll have to read it for yourself to find out the story.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2006-03-17

Two nights ago, I was staring at my bookshelf, looking at all of the books I've been totally interested in, bought, and then left to gather dust. Among them was Rupert Holmes' "Swing." I have no explanation for why I didn't read it right away -- I'm a real fan of Rupert's work, and I loved his first novel, "Where the Truth Lies." But for whatever reason, it sat on the shelf until Tuesday night.

Well, if I had read it right when I bought it, I wouldn't have had the pleasure of devouring it this week. So it all works out. "Swing" is an excellent novel, much different in tone from the incredibly sexy "Truth." This one is set in 1940, about a year and a half before the U.S. entered World War II.

"Swing" starts out as a witty, bittersweet story of a jazz musician who misses his daughter, and the young (female) composer who charms the socks off him. But anyone familiar with Rupert's writing will know he's a twisty guy, and soon "Swing" is throwing you more curves than Lombard Street.

The characters feel very real, especially the narrator, Ray Sherwood. Having met Rupert (just once, more's the pity), I can say that Ray has some of Rupert's own charm. The character's pain and his humor ring very true.

The CD that accompanies the book adds some color, though you could totally enjoy the book (and get the entire story) without ever listening to the CD. However, it's worth playing the CD to enjoy Rupert's original take on big band music (and to hear the very unusual piece around which the plot revolves, "Swing Around the Sun").

Overall, this novel is definitely worth reading. And *this* movie won't have to be rated NC-17! (Stupid ratings board!!!)

Book Description

Dead Ringer for a Dead Singer

Fifty-something New Jersey community college professor Bel Barret has had enough "changes of life" lately to last her a lifetime. Her daughter has cheerfully announced her pregnancy and her impending marriage in a single e-mail. Her son has come back home to find himself, but all he's found so far is the TV remote. Even a romantic stroll covering the Hoboken waterfront with live-in love Sol can do nothing to stabilize Bel's menopausal mood swings--especially when they stumble across the corpse of a stranger in the night who turns out to be... Frank Sinatra?

Actually, the bogus Blue Eyes was one Louie Palumbo, a sorry imitation of the late local icon. And since Louie had been dating and two-timing one of Bel's favorite students, the unfortunate co-ed is now the prime suspect in Palumbo's slaying. Bel's determined to go all the way to rout out the real killer. But that means plunging estrogen patch-first into the strange world of obsessive Sinatra worship--a move that could prove to be something stupid...maybe even fatal!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Get out your M & M's!.......2001-08-15

Our heroine, Bel, is addicted to M & M's. After all, it's a convenient way of eating chocolate without the mess. She needs a "fix" especially when she's involved in a stressful situation. There's plenty of those in this book and for those of us who could really empathize with the character, there are lots of M & M moments. Ms. Isenberg uses a lot of interesting devices to move the plot along. Most of the chapters start with an e-mail or letter to or from Bel. This lets you in on what's going on without hitting you over the head with it. I like it!

Teacher Bel has a lot of stuff going on in her life. I would have liked a little more about her relationship with Sol. It seems to be relegated to the back burner in this book. This is a character-driven book and the author has created some great characters--most of which would be interesting to meet. The mystery part is a little flimsy but, that can be forgiven because it's fun just reading what Bel and her cohorts are going to do next. I read this book on the plane from Vegas to Dallas and I didn't really mind that the flight was about a half-hour late because I was really into the book.

5 out of 5 stars What a Fun Treat for Mid-Life Fans of Sinatra & Sleuthing!.......2001-04-27

This book is a total kick to read! It's clever and funny, touching on everything from the dubious joys of planning a transcontinental wedding and the politics of community college life to the taste of fresh zeppoles at the Feast of St. Anne and the curiosities of celebrity impersonation--all wrapped in a satisfying murder mystery. And of course Bel Barrett once again shows us the humorous side of menopause, proving that "off the pill" doesn't mean "over the hill".

Bel and her sharp-eyed, smart-mouth pals Betty and Illuminada don't miss a trick--or a quip--on their way to finding out who did in the Sinatra wannabe. Even Bel's Mom and her octogenarian buddies get into the act, illuminating other wry and warming aspects of getting older while staying young at heart.

This is the third in this delightful series, and author Isenberg grows stronger with each one. Her literate, graceful writing style is a pleasure in itself, but mystery fans will find enough clues, suspects and plot twists to keep them turning pages til the wee hours of the morning. This is just the book to savor while listening to Frank sing "That's Life", "All of Me" or "It Was a Very Good Year". Don't miss "Mood Swings to Murder". It's smooth, sophisticated and sassy--just like Ol' Blue Eyes!

5 out of 5 stars Bel at her Best.......2001-03-18

Mystery fans will be delighted by the latest escapdes of Bel Barrett. In this case, the Belle of Hobkoen and her menopausal sidekicks solve the murder of a Frank Sinatra impersonator in Blue Eye's hometown. This is the third in the Bel Barrett mystery series, and Jane Isenberg gets better and better with each new book. All her mysteries have wonderful, masterful plots that keep the reader in suspense to the last chapter. Isenberg's characters are round, full of life and lives that the reader can grasp and enjoy. Isenberg is obviously a talented writer, and her prose bristles with humor and intelligence, and for the student of literature the subtle allusions here and there are an extra bit of fun. I wouldn't be surpised if these novels became the basis for a movie or TV series. They are great reads, and I'd love to see Bel's Hoboken on the silver screen. A big fan.

5 out of 5 stars This Mystery Is A Page Turner.......2001-02-16

The true-to-life dialogue coming from (for the mostpart) lovable characters, combined with a terrific plot, makes Jane Isenberg's latest mystery a real page turner. ... ...

5 out of 5 stars A Stroll Down Memory Lane.......2001-01-10

Isenberg does it again. Another great book. The sleuth Bel Barret reminds me of a favorite aunt--bright, funny, and a just a little nosey, but very lovable. The plot is fresh and the setting makes you feel like you can taste the New Jersey air. Definately an award winner in the making.

5 out of 5 stars Charming and Delightful!.......2002-08-07

I really am enjoying the Cribb-Thackery series, and this book has the added charm of a certain young lady by the Name of Harriet Shaw. This is a wonderful Victorian series, and this book is a pure delight. It connects The book "Three Men in a Boat" and Jack-the-Ripper since these two things were all the talk of the people in 1889. We are introduced to punting on the Thames, Oxford and Teacher's school as it was in England back then. Cribb is his usual irascible self, and Thackery is still long-suffering and ponderous. I am truly sorry that Peter Lovesey has only one more book left in this enjoyable series. Each one has been wonderful and has introduced me to another aspect of Victorian life that I have never gotten in any other Victorian series. And each one has been a cracking good mystery as well.

      Keep Out!

When Prince Krishna is called away, he leaves behind some strict instructions for the Hall children about one of the openings in the mysterious summerhouse: Keep Out! As Eddy and Eleanor swing through each of the other openings, they refuse to break the rule, even as their temptation grows. But when Oliver and little Georgie disappear through the forbidden archway, Eleanor and Eddy know that they must either break their promise or risk never seeing their friends again.

Yes! It's back in print . . . but nostalgia hounds, beware. The 2001 paperback edition does not include Erik Blegvad's illustrations (except for the frontispiece.) How unfortunate they chose to reprint it this way; the illustrations were such a huge part of what made this book special and memorable. Well, maybe the next edition will get the proper treatment this incredible book deserves.

5 out of 5 stars Reread Two Days Ago, Still Fun.......2002-03-11

I read the first three books of the Hall Family Chronicles when I was a girl. I was lucky enough to find hardcover copies of all three at the same library used book sale in 1982. I decided to reread them all again over this past weekend.

Prince Krishna has built a lovely summerhouse for Eleanor and Eddy Hall. This is no ordinary summerhouse. There's a magical adventure built into each archway. You enter the adventure by jumping off the swing. Once the magic starts, there's only so many swings until the summerhouse disappears forever. The bugs haven't been worked out of the last adventure before Prince Krishna has to fly back to his native country to avert war. Prince Krishna takes precautions by boarding up the archway, painting "KEEP OUT" on the boards, getting Eddy and Eleanor to promise they won't go through that archway, and not putting a swing in the summerhouse.

Prince Krishna's precautions are in vain. Eddy hangs a swing in the summerhouse. Of course Eddy wouldn't break his promise, but his obnoxious friend, Oliver, didn't promise anything. Oliver sees the "keep out" notice as a challenge. He swings until he breaks the boards with his feet, then sails off the swing -- and vanishes! What's poor Eddy going to do? Oliver's parents are very worried, but he can't tell them that Oliver jumped off the swing and disappeared into thin air. They'd think he was nuts. Eddy can't go through the SAME archway because of his promise, but that doesn't mean he can't go through the OTHER archways.

Meanwhile, Eleanor is very suspicious of Uncle Fred's new student, Mrs. Dorian, who has moved next door along with her little girl, Georgie, who isn't even in school yet. Eleanor is sure that Mrs. Dorian is a witch and has bewitched Uncle Freddy, because her uncle acts so silly around her. If you're older than Eleanor, you can probably figure out why.

Eleanor and Eddy don't get along as well as they did in THE DIAMOND IN THE WINDOW. Eddy has become a normal, messy boy who loves junk. He makes Eleanor so mad because she's become a prissy prig. Eleanor can hardly wait until she's old enough to wear pretty dresses and go to dances. She hates the fact that her uncle's school isn't making them rich because Uncle Freddy cares more about teaching than making money. Will the summerhouse show Eleanor the error of her ways?

My favorite archway adventure was "Make New Worlds". Sure, the man-castle and the big clipper ship were neat and the giant cash-register can teach you how much you're worth, but what's that compared to having the worlds you create come alive? (If you don't like the world of Princess Cinderellanor, wait until it's invaded by Eddy and Georgie's worlds!)

Time goes by. There's a tick-tock every time the swing is swung. All the adventures before the dangerous one have been tried, but Oliver is still missing. Eddy boarded up the archway after his friend disappeared, but Georgie is tempted. Georgie wants so much to be able to read and add two and two. Georgie is sure that she'll get what she wants if SHE breaks the boards and goes through. Will she? Of course she will. Who's going to rescue her (not to mention Oliver)? Eddy and Eleanor don't know it, but time is running out....

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Hall Family Chronicle!.......2002-02-10

The magical Prince Krishna, who is uncle to Eddy and Elanor Hall, has built a summerhouse in their backyard. Eddy and Elanor are warned they may use any opening in the summerhouse except the one entitled "Grow Up Now." They agree, and hang a swing in the middle of the summerhouse. Eddy and Elanor use it to swing into all of the other openings, having magical adventures. But what happens when someone goes through the forbidden archway? Read this book and find out! It is suspenseful, well-written, and above all, a wonderful book. I highly reccomend to other kids, and any grown-ups who are young at heart.

      I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Claudia in Venice: This is the Book!.......2000-03-02

Edited February of 2002--Finally, this book is back in print!!!! I read this book so many times as a child and as an adult. I probably borrowed it from the library more often than anyone else in my town. I am buying this book today now that it's back in print!

This is the book you're thinking of. I too read this book as a child and was fascinated by it. There were a number of areas the kids could jump out to through the windows in the Gazebo. I particularly remember one where the children end up inside another person looking out through his eyes. And the last window was "Grow Up Now." I've been looking for a copy of this book for years. Recently I wrote a letter to HarperCollins asking them to consider reprinting it. It's odd that they'd reprint Diamond in the Window but not this one.

      Book Description

Rare manuscript theft, forgery, crooked land developers, the gangs of New York and a Chinese cellist in 1939 New York City! Swing musician Katy Green agrees to help a friend, a music conservatory teacher in New York's roughest neighborhood, hunt for a stolen music manuscript. This rare and valuable autograph manuscript--perhaps a forgery-- of a Paganini guitar quartet has inexplicably vanished. What Katy first thinks will be the easy pursuit of a petty thief swiftly turns into a deadly fugue of greed, jealousy, and zealotry, and a fight for her life. Her fight to keep a Chinese cellist friend from being deported evokes 2003, but Katy's in New York in 1939, before the Empire State Building has enough tenants, before all the subways have been built, when Hell's Kitchen gangs shoot homemade linoleum knives at people.

      5 out of 5 stars encore! encore!.......2006-11-28

The more I read about Katy Green, the more I wish she was a real person! She's just the sort of person I'd like to know and share musical tales with. The time in which she lives is a bit before mine, unfortunately (I was still in my crib) but still - she's definitely a lady of her time.

Katy is bright and funny and smart and thrifty, and above all--a very talented musician, who can look beyond the notes on the page to pay attention to the world around her. And if that world includes good looking young men, well, why not? She isn't foolish about it, though, which is a good thing.

This tale is set slightly prior to the first book - Too Dead to Swing - so we learn how Katy ended up traveling in that swing band. As a classically-trained musician, she is somewhat of a rarity, being equally capable on violin or saxophone. The period details about New York City in the late 1930s seem right on, although not having been there at that time I can't say for certain. But I'll bet anyone who did live then would be hard put to disprove them, either.

Prejudice rears its ugly head in several ways in this engrossing mystery: it's just prior to WWII, when Oriental persons were looked at in different ways than they are now, and the migration of Southern Blacks to the North was in full flow. Add in a religious young woman from Appalachia, and you have a wonderfully mixed group of talented musicians who are not always capable of seeing beyond their music stands.

Katy follows various threads with the help of a newspaper reporter and finds the solution to several crimes, not just the one she was asked to investigate--the theft of an autograph manscript by the famous Niccolò Paganini. It's a marvelous performance, all around. I'm off to read her next adventure.

Hal Glatzer's Fugue In Hell's Kitchen provides a new Katy Green mystery. Katy is no ordinary P.I.: she's a swing violinist in 1939 who helps a friend search for a missing classical manuscript - only to find an investigation into petty theft becomes a fight for life. Gripping, especially with the unusual plot and background setting.

      5 out of 5 stars I love Katy!.......2004-03-31

I only wish I were Katy Green! She's the woman I always pictured myself being, but haven't yet become. I love the way she comes at the crime and the criminal---not to punish or exact revenge or retribution but to restore the balance of things. And the author seems to have gotten the period and the location just right---New York's Hell's Kitchen just before World War II. You can almost hear the El and smell the exhaust from the cars. I thought the first Katy Green was terrific ("Too Dead To Swing"). but this one is closer to home.

      5 out of 5 stars Give'em Hell's Kitchen, Katy!.......2004-03-08

It's 1939 in Hell's Kitchen, a New York City neighborhood where even plucky heroines, like Hal Glatzer's Katy Green, fear to venture. Gangs rule the streets, and World War II lurks around the corner. As the Great Depression hangs on, musicians, like Katy Green, conservatory and bandstand trained, scramble for any kind of gig they can get. A couple of bodies turn up at a failing music academy, a pal on the faculty is accused of stealing an original Paganini manuscript, and Katy rushes in to settle scores. Her investigation is well paced, and the ending surprises. Glatzer projects as detailed a rendition of the pre-war era as any cinematographer, with authentic language, cuisine, fashion, sexual mores, and race relations, against the ever-changing backdrop of New York. A Fugue in Hell's Kitchen is time travel without the sugarcoated nostalgia. Yet, traditional mystery readers will be glad to know there's little violence or sexual explicitness. A Fugue in Hell's Kitchen should appeal to anyone who likes jazz or classical music. Like Too Dead To Swing, the first in the Katy Green series, an audio version of A Fugue in Hell's Kitchen will soon be produced. The audio of Too Dead To Swing featured fine music and brilliant actors. What fun! I can't wait to hear the audio version of A Fugue in Hell's Kitchen. But definitely read it first.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful historical cozy.......2004-03-03

In 1939 swing violinist Katy Green is as usual unemployed and walking the pavement (and clubs) for a job. Though she would prefer to say no to her pal cellist Amalia "Am" Lee Chen's request for help, a gig is a gig, but Katy would have preferred a musical job. Instead Am asks Katy to find a priceless Paganini manuscript stolen from her cello case following a performance performed at the prestigious Meyers Conservatory.

Though Katy agrees, she finds the recent death of the conservatory's dean, Iris Meyers a bit more interesting. Katy notices the high note of the tension amidst the faculty reaching discord that along with the disastrous efforts of the deceased's successor, her brother Joseph, threatens the school's existence. .A forgery of the missing composition is returned to Am that leads to the police arresting her for stealing the manuscript. Now the case is personal as Katy follows the musical notes to Harlem trying to find the purloined item even as the conservatory's librarian, know it all, Nina Rovere is killed

Hal Glazer hits all the high notes with this delightful historical cozy that pays homage to various musical styles like swing. Katy is a wonderful lead performer who keeps the tale humming as she digs the scene in an attempt to prove that the arrest of Am is racial due to the imminent war and her friend being of Asiatic descent. Fans of historical who-done-its starring a wonderful amateur sleuth working the mean streets of the Manhattan club scene will sing in harmony with FUGUE IN HELL'S KITCHEN and want to resonate about Katy's previous number, TOO DEAD TO SWING.
