This book has given me the courage to heal. It along with my therapy has help me overcome my past.

5 out of 5 stars Help for the hopeless.......2007-09-16

I used this book in conjunction with a counselor, which I highly suggest. I recently bought this for my sister-in-law. I hope that she gets as much use out of it as I did. I didn't realize that the flashbacks and nightmares could stop, and that when they did, my whole life would improve. What a difference!

1 out of 5 stars If I could give 0 stars, I would.......2007-09-12

Frightening. Don't give others this kind of power over your thoughts or feelings. Don't trust any therapist that recommends this book, especially if he/she claims that even though you don't remember being abused, you must have been because you are depressed, having trouble in a relationship, etc. The authors have no qualifications whatsoever to diagnose you or to give advice on how to heal anything. Their methods discourage healing -- how can you heal a relationship if you cut the person off and refuse to speak with them merely because they have a hard time believing that abuse occurred? It's in human nature and in our system of justice to be skeptical, to demand proof before believing abuse happened that we never witnessed.

These authors and their publisher ought to be sued for the damages they have caused to countless patients, families and falsely accused on the basis of "recovered memories." Recovered memories have been proven unreliable at best, and it has been proven time and time again that memories can be fabricated by means of suggestion, hypnosis, etc. In addition, therapy that results in "recovered memories" has been shown to cause an increase in the suicide rates of those patients, increased duration of treatment, decreased success rates in treatment, increased divorce rates among patients, alienated family and friends. How is any of that healthy?

This book and related "recovered memory" therapy is all about mining for gold among patients' insurance benefits by keeping them messed up as long as possible. Don't be fooled -- there is a serious conflict of interest at play when a therapist suggests that your common problems, often effectively dealt with by discussing healthy thought and behavior modifications in short-term treatment are caused by some sinister event that you can't remember, and that will take 3 sessions a week for 7 years at $120 a visit to uncover them and "cure" you (or whatever your health insurance will pony up for).

Before you buy this book, Google "recovered memory therapy" "false memory syndrome" and read the articles written by scientists and psychiatrists that know that recovered memory therapy is "bad therapy". This book has contributed to countless destroyed lives and families, so you should be aware of the risks of reading it before you do.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Women Survivors.......2007-07-17

The Courage to Heal is not an easy read. It doesn't sugarcoat, nor does it shy away from the most difficult aspects of being an abuse survivor. However, it's been an invaluable tool in many a woman's recovery, including my own. Later editions are not gender-specific, but I found this one to be particularly helpful to me because it was geared towards women, and that helped me feel "safer" somehow. Your mileage, of course, may vary.

5 out of 5 stars a very good place to start.......2007-07-16

I read this book a very long time ago. is there more written now? yes. Are there more deep and perhaps stronger texts out there for folks really wanting to wretch thru it all. Yes.

Are you just getting started on your journey and need the basics while protecting yourself from completely falling apart? What is a flashback? what is happening to me? the first questions you ask. This book has been the "bible of CSA" for many years and probably will be the "bible" for years to come. It will always have it's place amoung those just beginning to "gently" begin to understand what has happened to them.

Really, the best place to start...then get the "spouses/significant other" version, read it also, maybe underline the parts that really speak to you and have your partner read it when you and they are ready. it can open many doors for understanding without you having to find the words. I really don't believe in re-inventing the healing wheel. It there is something out there that makes any of this easier for you...go for it.

4 out of 5 stars SUSPENSEFUL WHODUNIT..........2007-10-08

This is an entertaining thriller that kept me turning the pages. I have read a number of books by this author, and I have yet to be disappointed. Her characters are reasonably interesting, and the plot is well-thought out. Those who like easy reading suspense will definitely enjoy this author's books.

The plot centers around a school shooting that divides the small town of Bakersfield, Oregon. Three people were killed, two of them children. The townspeople are demanding justice. After all, a young boy has confessed to the shooting. It seems, however, that the evidence indicates that he may not have acted alone.

Officer Rainie Conner is the lead investigator in the shooting, but there are those in the town that feel that her past is impacting on her investigation, as controversy is brewing over her involvement. FBI profiler, Pierce Quincy, assists Officer Conner with the investigation, as he, too, is convinced that there is more to the shooting that meets the eye. They both want to see justice done and begin a deadly cat and mouse game with a shadowy character that lurks in the background and may, in fact, be the mastermind of all that has happened.

Those who enjoy the works of Mary Higgins Clark, Carlene Thompson, and Tami Hoag will be sure to enjoy this book, as will all those who enjoy suspense thrillers with a lot of twists and turns.

2 out of 5 stars Not Very Good..........2007-09-14

I didn't like this book for several reasons. The school shooting theme is very disturbing to me and I honestly don't think that the author did a good job exploring or explaining that issue. Another reason I didn't like the book was because the Rainie character was severely irritating. I'm so sick of the "macho" woman in these suspense thrillers. Rainie needs to grow up and get over herself. Lastly, the villain in this book didn't make any sense. His motives and reasoning were stupid. This book had potential, but fell flat.

4 out of 5 stars The Hits Just Keep On Comin.......2007-07-27

Lisa Gardner does it again. One of the few authors out there that can consistently turn out grab-you-by-the-throat thrillers.

In a small town of Oregan, a horrific school shooting takes place, leaving several dead, including a well loved teacher and 2 young girls. When the smoke settles, the mass murderer left holding the smoking gun is 13 year old Danny. Danny is the son of Sheriff O'Grady. Witnesses reported seeing a man dressed in black, roaming the halls of the school shortly before the shooting began. Did Danny have an accomplice? Is he just a pawn in a much larger game? Was it a random act of violence or were the victims hand picked?

Ms. Gardner answers these questions and much more in this taut thriller. What I enjoyed the most about this book was there were so many things taking place at the same time. The author keeps the storytelling tight and close to her chest, revealing bits and pieces at a pace that has the reader scrambling to turn the pages in a hope to discover what is truly going on.

The only complaint I have is the ending. The author seemed to want to wrap things up and have a great ending, but I felt it didn't make sense. The herione, in the end, is handled in a way that shouldn't have happened. If I explain it in any more detail, I will ruin the story for you, so I will just stop with that. The book is overall a great read and is well worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars Minor Quibbles; Major Accomplishment........2007-05-08

If the Amazon Star System allowed the possibility, I'd give this one four and a half stars, rather than four. But it doesn't. So, rounding off, I've given it four.

Let's get my very minor quibbles out of the way first: (1) There's no way a town small enough to need a law enforcement staff of only three people plus a volunteer is going to have a 'Dairy Queen.' They'd be 'lucky' to have a 'MacDonald's.' (2) The inhabitants of such a town would have to be insane to think they could hope to land a Wal-Mart. (3) There are no 'towering mountains' in the Oregon Coastal Range. I suppose an author from the east coast, which this one is, might be tricked into thinking that rolling foothills qualify as mountains, but they don't. (4) There is one small paragraph which violates the Point of View style set up in the rest of the book, and the exception is jarring, as it intrudes the book's 'omniscient' author into the mix-- always a big problem when editors don't catch it, which in this case they didn't.

But that is the sum extent of my quibbles. Other than that, this is a very good example of the type of book it is: the formulaic thriller slash mystery. Great Literature it isn't, but it makes no pretense to be, so there's no need to mark it down any for failing to be so. It's even character-based as opposed to plot-driven, which automatically elevates it several notches above the mid-ranks of the genre.

Lorraine Connor, a young deputy sheriff in a small coastal Oregon town who is tough but unsure of herself, and both vulnerable and quite capable of taking care of herself, is asked to be 'primary officer' at a bloody crime scene-- a school shooting in which two students and one teacher have been killed. The teacher-- the 3rd Victim of the title-- has been 'taken out' with a small caliber shot directly to the forhead, while the two students have been 'shot up' at much longer range. This discrepancy in methodology eventually causes the investigators to believe that there is more than one shooter involved. (A fact which the reader, but no one else, has been apprised of early on.)

The suspense comes in the form of delays and dead-ends in the process of finding out who the 'other' shooter is. One perpetrator, a kid, has already been caught, and has confessed, but refuses to talk about the crime, and for good reason: the other criminal is a serial killer with the ethics of a boa constrictor who knows how to scare kids into refusing to talk, sometimes permanently.

There are subplots galore: (1) Lorraine herself has something to hide concerning another shooting many years ago. Will she end up having to 'tell all' or won't she? (2) There's a nasty big-city investigator on scene, who is trying to undercut Lorraine and steal her case from her. Will he succeed? (3) An troubled FBI agent from Quantico finds Lorraine fascinating. Will they end up in bed? (4) One of the victims comes from a family with nasty secrets to hide. What lengths will other members of that family go to to 'protect' their past?

One of the most refreshing things about this book is that nothing is predictable. Not one of these subplots ends up being resolved in the way you think it's going to be. I can't begin to tell you how relieved I was by that!

I've avoided till now dealing with the true heart of the book, though, so the time has now come. On one level this books is 'mere' thriller, but on a deepler plane it's a fascinating glimpse into the world of disturbed psychology, particularly that of children. I'm not about to give anything away here, but just rest assured that this author has done tons of homework and has created characters who behave exactly the way that real people do. So much so that there is an air of realism to this fictional story that lifts it far beyond the bounds of most examples of its kind.

I highly recommend The 3rd Victim.

5 out of 5 stars An Antti Keisala Comment: Words In Flights Of Angels.......2007-04-03

I am a Bardolator and an Orthodox Shakespearean; so that you'll know where I'm coming from. I paraphrase Whitman by claiming that Hamlet contains multitudes. And of what other literary figures can we say such things and get away with it sounding normal? Perhaps God (especially the Yahweh of the Tanakh) and Jesus (either Nazarethian or Christ), perhaps Ulysses. Hamlet is so huge a figure greater works than Amazon User Comments have been written on the mere subject of him being an influence greater than our comprehension. He transcends not only the literary but our cultural "genres", because it's in part his creation.

I don't recommend only one edition of Hamlet but as with Mozart's "Requiem", you get a richer picture by collecting publications that vary sometimes significantly and provide them as if they were pieces of a puzzle. But Arden is known for its impeccable quality and high standards in editing, so this is amongst those editions that you will find useful. I've already given my thoughts on the 1603/1623 edition, a treasure in itself, and about what makes this combination work. It's easier to read without falling under the annotations as happens with this edition, although it's necessary that the extensive web of footnotes exists right there where it's supposed to be: it's useful to have them there, and to have so extensive a bulk of annotations in the end would be a drag. I will say with a blink in the eye that they will make you educated.

This edition doesn't take sides on matters, although what I found positively surprising taking into account my own beliefs is how open-mindedly the editors Ann Thompson and Neil Taylor talk about the Shakespearean Ur-Hamlet instead of the Kydian. Ironic in itself since it was the 1982 Jenkins Arden edition that was quite aggressive about the chance of Shakespeare being the writer. I don't know if it has to do with Bloomian influence, but it's nice to see a widened perspective, considering that I'm always inclined to be fascinated by the thought of the young Shakespeare, having just arrived in London, creating this play of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark with whatever company Shakespeare was then, be it Pembroke's Men or those of Lord Chamberlain's, in the late 1580s, then it being performed and being pulled out of production. I would consider the Ur-Hamlet as being more of a collaboration in which Shakespeare wouldn't have had the complete freedom to create his vision, but a joint vision of a theatre group. It could've been pulled out because it wasn't well-received, or rather as I like to think, because Shakespeare, now in growing popularity with growing prestige and influence over his peers, felt that the play wasn't really what he had intended. If we believe that Shakespeare had his hand in the revisions of the Folio that was published in 1623, we could think that he was tinkering with the play until the very end. If we believe this to be true, it shouldn't be surprising if he had started moulding it not in 1603 but in the late 1580s or truly in the early 1590s.

We could continue of this subject forever, but then there is the thing itself: the play, the words, the beautiful narrative, the experience. "Hamlet" is so full of everything - not to mention the culture it has helped to mould - it's hard to come across unchanged; nay, it's impossible to come across unchanged, but hard not to be obsessed. If Hamlet obsesses with the ghost and revenge that transcends the mere excuse to kill, we've been trapped to obsess with Hamlet: there are cosmic things brewing in his mind, and in his words there's a metaphysical awareness, mysteriously shrouded to tingle our imagination in just the right way. He's a grand character, so much that Harold Bloom famously argues that it's in fact Hamlet that has been shaping our sense of a humanity; and ironically he's more human in his conflicted nature than any of us.

I'm also obsessed with self-reference, a term that's been losing its meaning since it first was spoken out loud. But it's a sort of phase in the process of the narrative becoming self-conscious and possibly transcending the limitations set for it by the medium and extending to the mind of the reader, becoming a lucid flow of introspection. I would like to think of "Hamlet" and "Don Quijote" as the two works most responsible for our modern notion of narrative introspection which uses self-reference to create a multi-layered reality. The basic concept, of course, is to be found in "Hamlet" where the prince sets out a play to catch the king's conscience: with "Mousetrap" we have a new reality inside the one we're dwelling, in fact geniusly reflecting the reality in which we think we live in (that of Hamlet's), yet only know because of what an infernal ghost has been telling us. Basically this means that also "Mousetrap" could be a fiction, and we could be guilty parties, as well, in believing Hamlet. Since Quarto 6 it has become standard to call the ghost "the ghost of Hamlet's father", although I think that Shakespeare enjoyed this ambiguity between truth and fiction and deliberately yet subtly referred to the possibility of the ghost being the main narrator by providing Hamlet with false information. I can't think of anything more delicious than to see Shakespeare playing the role of the ghost (as the legend tells) considering the possible lines we can draw from the ghost to Shakespeare himself as the illusionist, the mage Prospero, the possessed priest taking us beyond the cosmic doors.

This is but one way of reading Hamlet. What speaks of its importance and genius is that there are millions of ways of interpreting what the play means, and each of them is allowed their oddness because the play is so profound that it's possible to find a whole cosmos inside of it. This is a play that has grown out the concepts of a mere work of art into biblical propositions just as the Holy Writ, Iliad and Odyssey and Cervantes' "Don Quijote". This is art around which we can build our whole life, at least our literary existence. Then we become a part of something that's grander than our Zeitgeist, we arrive to the root of what has been a part of every generation's canon of literary minds. It's a legacy and a bloodline to be cherished.

With best regards,
AK

4 out of 5 stars Arden Shakespeare Hamlet.......2006-12-05

I am currently working on my MFA/Directing. I directed Hamlet and am now writing my defense of it. I have two thoughts on this third edition.

After going through this edition, from a point of view of the script, I'm not sure I understand the need to update Harold Jenkins's 2d edition. The script itself was easier to navigate in the 2d edition and I thought Jenkins's notes were more helpful. I also disagree with some of what Thompson and Taylor have to say in their editorial notes below the script. That said, I am biased because I used the 2d edition as a sort of "Hamlet Bible" as I directed the piece. Jenkins's notes were extremely insightful and useful. I became very comfortable with it.

On the other hand, this third edition has some different insight into the play in performance than does the second edition, as well as information on casting and music that was not included in Jenkins. Obviously there is much written about William Shakespeare in the world, and this 3rd edition of Arden is probably the most up-to-date resource for bibliographic material (as well as some photos of past productions of the play). Jenkins edition is 24 years old, ancient in the scholastic world's "what's new" when it comes to sifting the vast quantity of material written on Shakespeare and Hamlet.

Obviously, the needs of the theatrical world for playing Hamlet are different than that of the scholastic world (of which I am currently stuck in both). I think Jenkins is more user-friendly for the theatrician while Thompson & Taylor suit the needs of the scholastic better. My final thought is that a scholar/student of Shakespeare will want to have both the second and third editions for the differences they have to offer.

5 out of 5 stars This is Hamlet we're talking about.......2001-06-19

I certainly do not rate this item five stars for its stunning value. I rate this five stars because I think that if I had to pay the amount listed for any complete edition of Hamlet, I would. It is simply that good. If you have not read it, do so.

    Book Description

4 out of 5 stars The Holocaust: Judeocentric Versus Universal Definition.......2006-08-11

According to Michael Berenbaum (pp. 20-22), there are two definitions of the Holocaust: Simon Wiesenthal's one that includes 5 million gentile victims of the Nazis along with the 6 million Jews, and Elie Wiesel's one that restricts the term Holocaust to Jews only. The latter definition is called by Berenbaum (p. 21, 33) the Judeo-centric (or Judeocentric) one, a term also used by this writer in many of his reviews. Thoughout this book, fears are repeatedly stated that any departure from the Judeocentric definition of the Holocaust will cause Jewish deaths to be forgotten. This is unbelievable! After all, the west has been awash, in the last few decades, in a vast quantity of strongly Judeocentric educational and media materials. Tokenism aside (such as this book), it is the deaths of non-Jews at the hands of the Germans that have virtually been forgotten!

Robert Jay Lifton has the following take on the implementation of German genocidal policies against Jews: "There is still considerable confusion among historians who are authorities on this issue as to whether Hitler ever issued a clear-cut written order or any order at all for the killing of Jews. There probably was an order, but it was not a clear-cut written order. The bureaucratic back-and-forth process was very much a part of the killing process."(pp. 227-228).

Oft-repeated statements (e. g., Israel Gutman, p. 98) about 90%/10% death rates of Polish Jews and Polish gentiles, respectively, are disingenuous. To begin with, they would only make sense if Polish Jews were the world's only Jews. Factoring all Jewish deaths against the global Jewish population, the figure drops to 33%. However, since there were far more Poles than Jews, percentages are not very informative in any case. As an extreme example, note that the 60 million Chinese murdered by Mao Zedong, a colossal death toll that would have been sufficient to exterminate all the world's Poles and Jews multiple times over, represents less than 6% of the Chinese population.

The Judeocentric definition of the Holocaust has long been buttressed by the rationalization of unique Jewish victimhood. This rationalization is here repeated by Carol Ritter (p. xii), Michael Berenbaum (p. 32-33), and Israel (Yisrael) Gutman (pp. 98-99). In actuality, as elaborated in the next two paragraphs of this review, the killing of all Jews is not factual, either in the short-term or the long-term.

To begin with, can it seriously be supposed that exterminatory German attitudes and tactics would have been the same had there existed a few hundred million European Jews but only a few million Slavs? Indeed, arguments about the imminence of Jewish deaths ignore the realities of German priorities, relative population sizes, and the time available to the Nazis. Any Pole, no less than any Jew, could be killed at any time for any reason or for no reason at all. And, while some Poles (e. g. captured guerillas) and some Jews (e. g. captured fugitives from the ghettos) were indeed killed at once, most Poles and Jews were "safe" until the Germans decided that it was their turn to die. The killing of Polish intellectuals actually took priority over the killing of Jews, which in turn took priority over the extermination of the remaining Poles. Ironically, had the war ended much sooner, and were the media objective and balanced, the Nazis would forever have been known as Pole-killers more than as Jew-killers! To compound the irony further, much the same would have also been the case had the Germans won the war. Owing to the fact that the war ended when it actually did, plus the fact that there were far more Poles than Jews, the turn for some Jews and most Poles never came.

The "Not all of the Victims of the Nazis were Jews, but all Jews were victims of the Nazis" argument is fallacious in other ways. To begin with, nearly 2/3rds of the world's Jews were out of Germany's reach and, short of literally conquering the world, neither Hitler nor his successors could possible have killed all the world's Jews. In contrast, nearly all ethnic Poles were at Germany's complete mercy. Moreover, far from all accessible Jews were targeted while Nazi Germany existed (1933-1945). Finland's (Germany's ally) Jews were never molested, and Bulgaria's Jews were only pursued halfheartedly. The neutrality of Switzerland and Sweden was consistently respected despite their Jewish populations (notably the famous escaped Danish Jews sheltered by the latter). Known Jewish Allied POWs were spared. Thousands of European Jews were used by Germany for forced labor and, with some exceptions, were not killed in the latest days of the war. As for permanent acceptance of known Jews by the Nazis, thousands of full-blooded German Jews were arbitrarily declared Aryans, and thereby spared (the Schutzjuden).

It is sobering to realize that Polish forced laborers were forced to wear an identification patch before the Jews were required to do so! (Edward Homze, p. 39). As for the future, Richard C. Lukas (pp. 88-95) presents strong evidence, from German sources, that the Poles and other Slavs were targeted for eventual extermination. Further evidence of this is provided by Taras Hunczak (pp. 117-118). These facts refute the denial of Poles' genocide by Berenbaum (p. 32-33), and the frankly ridiculous assertion by Israel (Yisrael) Gutman (p. 98) that the Poles had some sort of "right to remain alive."

Among other articles in this book, John S. Conway provides a good rebuttal against common attacks against the conduct of the German Catholic Church relative to the Nazis and their policies.

4 out of 5 stars Five Million Non-Jewish Holocaust Victim Have Been Forgoten.......2000-02-21

One of the greatest tragedies of the Holocaust besides the event itself, is the disremebering of five million non-Jewish Holocaust victims. Killed in the same camps, using the same vile methods of extermination and for the same profane reasons, these forgoten sufferers have been reduced to a cipher at the footnote of this event. The Nazis called for the TOTAL anhililation of Europe's Gypsies in two writen decrees, making claims of Jewish exclusivity to Holocaust suffering indefensible and dishonest. It is imperative that we speak of 11 million Holocaust victims if we are to do justice to truth. This book is a candle in the darkness. I can only hope it's flame gets brighter.

3 out of 5 stars The Cat's In the Cradle of Murder........2005-09-30

Sounds like real life to me! An anonymous letter (in my case, e-mail from an obsessive stranger) from a man with a vendetta. Matthews draws on her career as a clinical social worker to develop the character, Cassidy McCabe. I'd hope she does not represent "everywoman" as I am certainly not like her, except for the love of cats. In the past, I had a mother cat and kittens but, finding loving homes for them for a hard task. Stat has never had kittens, and they scare her.

Cassidy has a live-in lover, Zach, rich enough to own a condo and can co-exist with a houseful of cats. She's a psychotherapist, he a reporter in Chicago. The threatening letter arrives hand-delivered and leaves her perplexed -- until a new client of hers reveals a duplicate of the correspondence sent to her, which warms the two women that "torment ... lies ahead" for them. The patient is afraid to go to the police. Not I -- nor the D.A., but their investigations didn't tell me anything I hadn't already figured out.

There is a definite "viciousness" in 'Cliff's warning as he becomes obsessed with her and starts stalking -- which is a crime worse than threats. Cassidy and Zach launch their own investigation, only to find themselves pawns in a cat-and-mouse chase. This, however, is a serious matter, and she has to take matters in her own hands.

Cliff turned out to be a genuine lunatic with paranoid delusions, with full-blown obsessiveness and narcissistic personality disorder, among other health problems which will lead to early death. He has a sadistic urge to hate women and refused to take responsibility for his own reckless behavior. He also has a split personality to boot: good boy/bad guy. Shades of SYBIL. He sought publicity and was on the t.v. news after killing a man and ending up in a mental hospital.

She had two previous mysteries, SATAN'S SILENCE and SECRET'S SHADOW previous to this one, and now has out three more, all featuring Cassidy, WANTON'S WEB, DEATH'S DOMAIN and CAT'S CLAW.
It was a bit involved, and I am against someone using their clients as "material for publication."

5 out of 5 stars A skillful balance of mystery, suspense, humor and relief........2000-05-09

Cassidy McCabe is a psychotherapist who conducts her practice from an office in her home. Life should be great for Cassidy now. Her relationship with her boyfriend Zachary Moran is growing, they are now living together; her cat Starshine has three beautiful and healthy kittens, and her mother is getting married. But things don't always work out like they should. Suddenly, women Cassidy doesn't even know and has never met are confronting her. They all say the same thing; they accuse her of being in league with someone named Cliff and that Cassidy and Cliff are trying to destroy what is left of their lives. Cassidy finally manages to piece the story together. Cliff, it seems, is on some sort of `mission'. He is picking certain women who are all similar to each other, romancing them and then injecting them with his blood. Blood that is HIV positive. Now, for some unknown reason, he has involved Cassidy. Cliff claims to be a client of Cassidy's, but she has no client named Cliff nor any that are HIV positive that she knows of. Questions are racing through Cassidy's mind. Why is Cliff doing those horrible things? Why did he pick her? As Cassidy and Zach begin to put pieces together, things take an unexpected turn. Cliff starts leaving Cassidy personal notes, in her own house. Another delightful story from author Alex Matthews. Vendetta's Victim provides you with quite a few suspects to choose from, while at the same time carefully concealing the true identity of Cliff. As the Cassidy McCabe series continue the books get better and better. Ms. Matthews skillfully balances mystery and suspense with humor and relief.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Cassidy McCabe mysteries yet!.......2000-05-09

Alex Matthews has out done herself with Vendetta's Victim, the third book of this series. For those who enjoyed the first two novels, this one will blow you away! The smooth prose and smart plot are guaranteed to satisfy any mystery lover. Indeed, the eccentric, cat loving, peanut butter cup munching Cassidy has truly hit her stride, right through the startling conclusion. Cassidy's having family troubles. After thirty-two years of the single life, her mother's engaged to marry a jerk. Her boyfriend Zach won't even go to the engagement party. Her gay cousin has been murdered while having lunch with her. And her cat Starshine's three kittens have got to find homes before she looses every pair of panty hose she owns. Meanwhile, a woman named Dale angrily turns up on Cassidy's doorstep demanding to know why Cliff has referred her to Cassidy for therapy. Dale thrusts the letter from Cliff on Cassidy and storms of f into the night. Cassidy has never treated a man named Cliff. But when a second woman calls on Zach's private cell phone with a similar letter and story, Cassidy becomes suspicious of foul play. Soon Cliff is leaving Cassidy notes in her own kitchen, and her safety is once again compromised. Cliff has found a way to use AIDS as a weapon, and Cassidy finds herself tracking him before he can infect any more women. Cassidy McCabe is a refreshing breather in the world of detective novels where most heroines are larger than life, gifted with money and looks, giving them an edge most women can't identify with. Cassidy is too thin, somewhat insecure, and brash to the end. Her enduring habit of talking to Starshine the cat and eating peanut butter cups brings her into the real world, making her character markedly vivid. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two novels, but I must admit that this one is the best mystery yet! Keep them coming, Ms. Matthews!

5 out of 5 stars Alex Matthews has done it again........1999-10-02

Another suspensful thriller! In Vendetta's Victim, her lovable characters, therapist Cassidy, and reporter Zach, are back, along with their cat and a bunch of new kittens. A sicko is on the loose infecting women with HIV virus and killing gay men. This time, I smugly thought I'd figured out the killer, only to be proven wrong. Ms. Matthews always stays just one step ahead and leaves us guessing until, at the end, she wraps everything up neatly. Besides containing great suspense, the novel also has good human interest with Cassidy's relationships with her SO, Zach, and her mother, Helen.

        4 out of 5 stars A haunting look at a disturbed mind........1998-11-01

Alex Matthews is a terrific writer, her mysteries are well-plotted with believable characters and filled with suspense . Vendetta's Victim is a haunting story with a look at the dark pathways of a disturbed mind as well as complicated family relationships. Heroine Cassidy McCab struggles with work and home maintainence along with three over-active kittens and their exhausted mother. It's the kind of page turner that makes you take a bath instead of a shower because you can't read in the shower
